प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां पृथुवक्षा महायशाः ।
रामः कमलपत्राक्षः पुरोधसमथाब्रवीत् ॥१॥

1. But when the night had ended and dawn arrived, Rama, broad-chested, greatly renowned, and with eyes like lotus petals, then spoke to his chief priest.
अग्निहोत्रं व्रजत्वग्रे सर्पिर्ज्वलितपावकम् ।
वाजपेयातपत्रं च शोभयानं महापथम् ॥२॥
2. agnihotraṃ vrajatvagre sarpirjvalitapāvakam ,
vājapeyātapatraṃ ca śobhayānaṃ mahāpatham.
2. agnihotram vrajatu agre sarpiḥ jvalita pāvakam
vājapeya ātapatram ca śobhayānam mahāpatham

2. Let the agnihotra (Vedic fire ritual) proceed at the forefront, with its ghee-fed, blazing fire; and let the parasol of the vājapeya (Vedic ritual) adorn the great path.
ततो वसिष्ठस्तेजस्वी सर्वं निरवशेषतः ।
चकार विधिवद्धर्म्यं महाप्रास्थानिकं विधिम् ॥३॥
3. tato vasiṣṭhastejasvī sarvaṃ niravaśeṣataḥ ,
cakāra vidhivaddharmyaṃ mahāprāsthānikaṃ vidhim.
3. tataḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ tejasvī sarvam niravaśeṣataḥ
cakāra vidhivat dharmyam mahāprāsthānikam vidhim
3. tataḥ tejasvī vasiṣṭhaḥ sarvam niravaśeṣataḥ
vidhivat dharmyam mahāprāsthānikam vidhim cakāra
3. Then, the brilliant Vasiṣṭha performed completely and flawlessly the ritual (vidhi) of the great departure, which was in accordance with (dharma) or righteous principles.
ततः क्षौमाम्बरधरो ब्रह्म चावर्तयन्परम् ।
कुशान् गृहीत्वा पाणिभ्यां प्रसज्य प्रययावथ ॥४॥
4. tataḥ kṣaumāmbaradharo brahma cāvartayanparam ,
kuśān gṛhītvā pāṇibhyāṃ prasajya prayayāvatha.
4. tataḥ kṣauma ambara dharaḥ brahma ca āvartayan
param kuśān gṛhītvā pāṇibhyām prasajya prayayau atha

4. Then, wearing silk garments, reciting the supreme (brahman), and holding kuśa grass in both hands, he dedicated himself (to the journey) and departed.
अव्याहरन् क्व चित् किं चिन्निश्चेष्टो निःसुखः पथि ।
निर्जगाम गृहात्तस्माद्दीप्यमानो यथांशुमान् ॥५॥
5. avyāharan kva cit kiṃ cinniśceṣṭo niḥsukhaḥ pathi ,
nirjagāma gṛhāttasmāddīpyamāno yathāṃśumān.
5. avyāharan kvacit kim cit niśceṣṭaḥ niḥsukhaḥ pathi
nirjagāma gṛhāt tasmāt dīpyamānaḥ yathā aṃśumān
5. kvacit kim cit avyāharan niśceṣṭaḥ niḥsukhaḥ pathi
dīpyamānaḥ yathā aṃśumān tasmāt gṛhāt nirjagāma
5. Speaking nothing whatsoever, motionless and joyless on the path, he departed from that house, shining brightly like the sun.
रामस्य पार्श्वे सव्ये तु पद्मा श्रीः सुसमाहिता ।
दक्षिणे ह्रीर्विशालाक्षी व्यवसायस्तथाग्रतः ॥६॥
6. rāmasya pārśve savye tu padmā śrīḥ susamāhitā ,
dakṣiṇe hrīrviśālākṣī vyavasāyastathāgrataḥ.
6. rāmasya pārśve savye tu padmā śrīḥ susamāhitā
dakṣiṇe hrīḥ viśālākṣī vyavasāyaḥ tathā agrataḥ
6. On Rama's left side, indeed, sat the lotus-born goddess (śrī), Lakshmi, perfectly composed. On his right was Hri, the wide-eyed goddess of modesty, and in front of him stood resolute effort.
शरा नानाविधाश्चापि धनुरायतविग्रहम् ।
अनुव्रजन्ति काकुत्स्थं सर्वे पुरुषविग्रहाः ॥७॥
7. śarā nānāvidhāścāpi dhanurāyatavigraham ,
anuvrajanti kākutsthaṃ sarve puruṣavigrahāḥ.
7. śarāḥ nānāvidhāḥ ca api dhanuḥ āyatavigraham
anuvrajanti kākutstham sarve puruṣavigrahāḥ
7. Numerous kinds of arrows, as well as the long-bodied bow, all in human form, followed Rama (kākutstha).
वेदा ब्राह्मणरूपेण सावित्री सर्वरक्षिणी ।
ओंकारो ऽथ वषट्कारः सर्वे राममनुव्रताः ॥८॥
8. vedā brāhmaṇarūpeṇa sāvitrī sarvarakṣiṇī ,
oṃkāro'tha vaṣaṭkāraḥ sarve rāmamanuvratāḥ.
8. vedāḥ brāhmaṇarūpeṇa sāvitrī sarvarakṣiṇī
oṃkāraḥ atha vaṣaṭkāraḥ sarve rāmam anuvratāḥ
8. The Vedas, in the form of Brahmins, Savitri (the all-protecting goddess), the sacred syllable (oṃkāra), and the Vedic exclamation (vaṣaṭkāra) - all these were devoted to Rama.
ऋषयश्च महात्मानः सर्व एव महीसुराः ।
अन्वगच्छन्त काकुत्स्थं स्वर्गद्वारमुपागतम् ॥९॥
9. ṛṣayaśca mahātmānaḥ sarva eva mahīsurāḥ ,
anvagacchanta kākutsthaṃ svargadvāramupāgatam.
9. ṛṣayaḥ ca mahātmānaḥ sarve eva mahīsurāḥ
anvagacchanta kākutstham svargadvāram upāgatam
9. And all the great-souled ones (mahatman), who are considered gods on earth, followed Rama (kākutstha), who had reached the gate of heaven.
तं यान्तमनुयान्ति स्म अन्तःपुरचराः स्त्रियः ।
सवृद्धबालदासीकाः सवर्षवरकिंकराः ॥१०॥
10. taṃ yāntamanuyānti sma antaḥpuracarāḥ striyaḥ ,
savṛddhabāladāsīkāḥ savarṣavarakiṃkarāḥ.
10. tam yāntam anuyānti sma antaḥpuracarāḥ striyaḥ
savṛddhabāladāsīkāḥ savarṣavarakinkarāḥ
10. The women of the inner apartments followed him as he departed, accompanied by their old and young maids, and by eunuchs and principal servants.
सान्तःपुरश्च भरतः शत्रुघ्नसहितो ययौ ।
रामव्रतमुपागम्य राघवं समनुव्रताः ॥११॥
11. sāntaḥpuraśca bharataḥ śatrughnasahito yayau ,
rāmavratamupāgamya rāghavaṃ samanuvratāḥ.
11. sa antaḥpuraḥ ca bharataḥ śatrughnasahitaḥ
yayau rāmavratam upāgamya rāghavam samanuvaratāḥ
11. And Bharata, accompanied by the women of his inner apartments and Shatrughna, departed, having undertaken the observance of Rama and following Raghava.
ततो विप्रा महात्मानः साग्निहोत्राः समाहिताः ।
सपुत्रदाराः काकुत्स्थमन्वगच्छन्महामतिम् ॥१२॥
12. tato viprā mahātmānaḥ sāgnihotrāḥ samāhitāḥ ,
saputradārāḥ kākutsthamanvagacchanmahāmatim.
12. tataḥ viprāḥ mahātmānaḥ sa agnihotrāḥ samāhitāḥ
sa putradārāḥ kākutstham anvagacchan mahāmatim
12. Then the noble-minded Brahmins, accompanied by their sacred fire rituals (agnihotra), composed, and with their sons and wives, followed Kakutstha (Rama), the one of great wisdom.
मन्त्रिणो भृत्यवर्गाश्च सपुत्राः सहबान्धवाः ।
सानुगा राघवं सर्वे अन्वगच्छन्प्रहृष्टवत् ॥१३॥
13. mantriṇo bhṛtyavargāśca saputrāḥ sahabāndhavāḥ ,
sānugā rāghavaṃ sarve anvagacchanprahṛṣṭavat.
13. mantriṇaḥ bhṛtyavargāḥ ca saputrāḥ sahabāndhavāḥ
sa anugāḥ rāghavam sarve anvagacchan prahṛṣṭavat
13. All the ministers and their retinues, along with their sons, kinsmen, and attendants, joyfully followed Raghava (Rama).
ततः सर्वाः प्रकृतयो हृष्टपुष्टजनावृताः ।
अनुजग्मुः प्रगच्छन्तं राघवं गुणरञ्जिताः ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayo hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtāḥ ,
anujagmuḥ pragacchantaṃ rāghavaṃ guṇarañjitāḥ.
14. tataḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtāḥ
anujagmuḥ pragacchantam rāghavam guṇarañjitāḥ
14. tataḥ guṇarañjitāḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ
hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtāḥ pragacchantam rāghavam anujagmuḥ
14. Then, all the subjects, who were delighted by his noble qualities and accompanied by happy and well-fed people, followed Rāma as he proceeded.
स्नातं प्रमुदितं सर्वं हृष्टपुष्पमनुत्तमम् ।
दृप्तं किलिकिलाशब्दैः सर्वं राममनुव्रतम् ॥१५॥
15. snātaṃ pramuditaṃ sarvaṃ hṛṣṭapuṣpamanuttamam ,
dṛptaṃ kilikilāśabdaiḥ sarvaṃ rāmamanuvratam.
15. snātam pramuditam sarvam hṛṣṭapuṣpam anuttamam
dṛptam kilakilāśabdaiḥ sarvam rāmam anuvratam
15. sarvam snātam pramuditam hṛṣṭapuṣpam anuttamam dṛptam
kilakilāśabdaiḥ sarvam rāmam anuvratam (abhūt)
15. The entire populace, bathed, exceedingly joyful, radiantly flourishing, excellent, and boisterous with cries of exultation, was devoted to Rāma.
न तत्र कश्चिद्दीनो ऽभूद्व्रीडितो वापि दुःखितः ।
हृष्टं प्रमुदितं सर्वं बभूव परमाद्भुतम् ॥१६॥
16. na tatra kaściddīno'bhūdvrīḍito vāpi duḥkhitaḥ ,
hṛṣṭaṃ pramuditaṃ sarvaṃ babhūva paramādbhutam.
16. na tatra kaścid dīnaḥ abhūt vrīḍitaḥ vā api duḥkhitaḥ
hṛṣṭam pramuditam sarvam babhūva paramādbhutam
16. tatra kaścid dīnaḥ vā api vrīḍitaḥ vā api duḥkhitaḥ na abhūt.
sarvam hṛṣṭam pramuditam paramādbhutam babhūva
16. There, no one was dejected, nor even ashamed or distressed. Everyone became happy, greatly delighted, and truly marvelous (to behold).
द्रष्टुकामो ऽथ निर्याणं राज्ञो जानपदो जनः ।
संप्राप्तः सो ऽपि दृष्ट्वैव सह सर्वैरनुव्रतः ॥१७॥
17. draṣṭukāmo'tha niryāṇaṃ rājño jānapado janaḥ ,
saṃprāptaḥ so'pi dṛṣṭvaiva saha sarvairanuvrataḥ.
17. draṣṭukāmaḥ atha niryāṇam rājñaḥ jānapadaḥ janaḥ
samprāptaḥ saḥ api dṛṣṭvā eva saha sarvaiḥ anuvrataḥ
17. atha rājñaḥ niryāṇam draṣṭukāmaḥ jānapadaḥ janaḥ samprāptaḥ.
saḥ api (rāmam) dṛṣṭvā eva sarvaiḥ saha anuvrataḥ (abhūt)
17. Then, the populace from the countryside, desirous of witnessing the king's departure, arrived. Merely upon seeing (Rāma), they too became devoted followers, along with all the others.
ऋक्षवानररक्षांसि जनाश्च पुरवासिनः ।
अगछन्परया भक्त्या पृष्ठतः सुसमाहिताः ॥१८॥
18. ṛkṣavānararakṣāṃsi janāśca puravāsinaḥ ,
agachanparayā bhaktyā pṛṣṭhataḥ susamāhitāḥ.
18. ṛkṣavānararakṣāṃsi janāḥ ca puravāsinaḥ
agacchan parayā bhaktyā pṛṣṭhataḥ susamāhitāḥ
18. The bears, monkeys, rākṣasas, and the citizens followed attentively behind him with great devotion (bhakti).
