ततस्त्रिशङ्कोर्वचनं श्रुत्वा क्रोधसमन्वितम् ।
ऋषिपुत्रशतं राम राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. tatastriśaṅkorvacanaṃ śrutvā krodhasamanvitam ,
ṛṣiputraśataṃ rāma rājānamidamabravīt.

1. Then, O Rāma, upon hearing Triśaṅku's words, which were filled with anger, a hundred sons of sages spoke this to the king.
प्रत्याख्यातो ऽसि दुर्बुद्धे गुरुणा सत्यवादिना ।
तं कथं समतिक्रम्य शाखान्तरमुपेयिवान् ॥२॥
2. pratyākhyāto'si durbuddhe guruṇā satyavādinā ,
taṃ kathaṃ samatikramya śākhāntaramupeyivān.

tam katham samatikramya śākhāntaram upeyivān

2. O foolish one, you have been rejected by your truthful guru. How then, having disregarded him, did you approach another branch of priests?
इक्ष्वाकूणां हि सर्वेषां पुरोधाः परमा गतिः ।
न चातिक्रमितुं शक्यं वचनं सत्यवादिनः ॥३॥
3. ikṣvākūṇāṃ hi sarveṣāṃ purodhāḥ paramā gatiḥ ,
na cātikramituṃ śakyaṃ vacanaṃ satyavādinaḥ.
3. ikṣvākūṇām hi sarveṣām purodhāḥ paramā gatiḥ
na ca atikramitum śakyam vacanam satyavādinaḥ

3. Indeed, for all members of the Ikṣvāku dynasty, the family priest is the ultimate refuge (गति). And the word of a truthful person (सत्यवादिनः) cannot be transgressed.
अशक्यमिति चोवाच वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः ।
तं वयं वै समाहर्तुं क्रतुं शक्ताः कथं तव ॥४॥
4. aśakyamiti covāca vasiṣṭho bhagavānṛṣiḥ ,
taṃ vayaṃ vai samāhartuṃ kratuṃ śaktāḥ kathaṃ tava.
4. aśakyam iti ca uvāca vasiṣṭhaḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ tam
vayam vai samāhartum kratum śaktāḥ katham tava
4. bhagavān ṛṣiḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ ca iti aśakyam uvāca .
vayam vai tam tava kratum samāhartum katham śaktāḥ
4. "It is impossible," said the venerable sage Vasiṣṭha. "How can we possibly perform that ritual (kratu) for you?"
बालिशस्त्वं नरश्रेष्ठ गम्यतां स्वपुरं पुनः ।
याजने भगवाञ् शक्तस्त्रैलोक्यस्यापि पार्थिव ॥५॥
5. bāliśastvaṃ naraśreṣṭha gamyatāṃ svapuraṃ punaḥ ,
yājane bhagavāñ śaktastrailokyasyāpi pārthiva.
5. bāliśaḥ tvam naraśreṣṭha gamyatām svapuram punaḥ
yājane bhagavān śaktaḥ trailokyasya api pārthiva

5. "You are foolish, O best of men! Return to your own city. O king (pārthiva), the venerable one (Vasiṣṭha) is capable of officiating even for the three worlds."
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा क्रोधपर्याकुलाक्षरम् ।
स राजा पुनरेवैतानिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā krodhaparyākulākṣaram ,
sa rājā punarevaitānidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
6. teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā krodhaparyākulākṣaram
sa rājā punaḥ eva etān idam vacanam abravīt

6. Having heard their words, which were agitated with anger, that king again spoke these words to them.
प्रत्याख्यातो ऽस्मि गुरुणा गुरुपुत्रैस्तथैव च ।
अन्यां गतिं गमिष्यामि स्वस्ति वो ऽस्तु तपोधनाः ॥७॥
7. pratyākhyāto'smi guruṇā guruputraistathaiva ca ,
anyāṃ gatiṃ gamiṣyāmi svasti vo'stu tapodhanāḥ.
7. pratyākhyātaḥ asmi guruṇā guruputraiḥ tathā eva ca
anyām gatim gamiṣyāmi svasti vaḥ astu tapodhanāḥ
7. guruṇā guruputraiḥ tathā eva ca asmi pratyākhyātaḥ .

vaḥ svasti astu
7. "I have been rejected by my guru and by his sons as well. I will seek another path. May welfare be to you, O ascetics (tapodhana)."
ऋषिपुत्रास्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा वाक्यं घोराभिसंहितम् ।
शेपुः परमसंक्रुद्धाश्चण्डालत्वं गमिष्यसि ।
एवमुक्त्वा महात्मानो विविशुस्ते स्वमाश्रमम् ॥८॥
8. ṛṣiputrāstu tacchrutvā vākyaṃ ghorābhisaṃhitam ,
śepuḥ paramasaṃkruddhāścaṇḍālatvaṃ gamiṣyasi ,
evamuktvā mahātmāno viviśuste svamāśramam.
8. ṛṣiputrāḥ tu tat śrutvā vākyam
ghorābhisaṃhitam śepuḥ parama-saṃkruddhāḥ
ca caṇḍālatvam gamiṣyasi evam
uktvā mahātmānaḥ viviśuḥ te svam āśramam

vākyam śrutvā parama-saṃkruddhāḥ ca

8. Indeed, the sons of the sages, having heard that speech imbued with a terrible curse, became exceedingly enraged. They cursed him, saying, 'You shall attain the state of an outcaste (caṇḍāla)!' Having spoken thus, those noble souls (mahātmānaḥ) entered their own hermitage (āśrama).
अथ रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां राजा चण्डालतां गतः ।
नीलवस्त्रधरो नीलः परुषो ध्वस्तमूर्धजः ।
चित्यमाल्यानुलेपश्च आयसाभरणो ऽभवत् ॥९॥
9. atha rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃ rājā caṇḍālatāṃ gataḥ ,
nīlavastradharo nīlaḥ paruṣo dhvastamūrdhajaḥ ,
cityamālyānulepaśca āyasābharaṇo'bhavat.
9. atha rātryām vyatītāyām rājā caṇḍālatām
gataḥ nīlavastradharaḥ nīlaḥ
paruṣaḥ dhvastamūrdhajaḥ

9. Then, after the night had passed, the king became an outcaste (caṇḍāla). He was clad in blue garments, dark-complexioned, with a harsh demeanor and disheveled hair. He wore garlands and unguents from the cremation ground, and was adorned with iron ornaments.
तं दृष्ट्वा मन्त्रिणः सर्वे त्यक्त्वा चण्डालरूपिणम् ।
प्राद्रवन् सहिता राम पौरा ये ऽस्यानुगामिनः ॥१०॥
10. taṃ dṛṣṭvā mantriṇaḥ sarve tyaktvā caṇḍālarūpiṇam ,
prādravan sahitā rāma paurā ye'syānugāminaḥ.
10. tam dṛṣṭvā mantriṇaḥ sarve tyaktvā caṇḍālarūpiṇam
prādravan sahitāḥ rāma paurāḥ ye asya anugāminaḥ
10. rāma sarve mantriṇaḥ ca ye asya anugāminaḥ paurāḥ
sahitāḥ tam caṇḍālarūpiṇam dṛṣṭvā tyaktvā prādravan
10. O Rāma, upon seeing him in the form of an outcaste (caṇḍāla), all the ministers, accompanied by the citizens who were his followers, abandoned him and fled.
एको हि राजा काकुत्स्थ जगाम परमात्मवान् ।
दह्यमानो दिवारात्रं विश्वामित्रं तपोधनम् ॥११॥
11. eko hi rājā kākutstha jagāma paramātmavān ,
dahyamāno divārātraṃ viśvāmitraṃ tapodhanam.
11. ekaḥ hi rājā kākutstha jagāma paramātmavān
dahyamānaḥ divārātram viśvāmitram tapodhanam
11. kākutstha hi ekaḥ paramātmavān rājā dahyamānaḥ
divārātram tapodhanam viśvāmitram jagāma
11. Indeed, O scion of Kakutstha (kākutstha), only one king, endowed with a noble spirit (paramātman), went, tormented day and night, to Viśvāmitra, whose treasure was asceticism (tapas).
विश्वामित्रस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा राजानं विफलीकृतम् ।
चण्डालरूपिणं राम मुनिः कारुण्यमागतः ॥१२॥
12. viśvāmitrastu taṃ dṛṣṭvā rājānaṃ viphalīkṛtam ,
caṇḍālarūpiṇaṃ rāma muniḥ kāruṇyamāgataḥ.
12. viśvāmitraḥ tu tam dṛṣṭvā rājānam viphalīkṛtam
caṇḍālarūpiṇam rāma muniḥ kāruṇyam āgataḥ
12. rāma viśvāmitraḥ muniḥ tam viphalīkṛtam
caṇḍālarūpiṇam rājānam dṛṣṭvā tu kāruṇyam āgataḥ
12. O Rāma, Viśvāmitra, the sage, having seen that king who was frustrated and had taken on the form of a caṇḍāla, was filled with compassion.
कारुण्यात् स महातेजा वाक्यं परम धार्मिकः ।
इदं जगाद भद्रं ते राजानं घोरदर्शनम् ॥१३॥
13. kāruṇyāt sa mahātejā vākyaṃ parama dhārmikaḥ ,
idaṃ jagāda bhadraṃ te rājānaṃ ghoradarśanam.
13. kāruṇyāt saḥ mahātejāḥ vākyam parama dhārmikaḥ
idam jagāda bhadram te rājānam ghoradarśanam
13. saḥ mahātejāḥ parama dhārmikaḥ kāruṇyāt idam vākyam ghoradarśanam rājānam jagāda.
te bhadram (astu).
13. Out of compassion, that greatly effulgent and supremely righteous (dharma) sage spoke these words to the king, who had a terrifying appearance: 'May well-being be yours!'
किमागमनकार्यं ते राजपुत्र महाबल ।
अयोध्याधिपते वीर शापाच्चण्डालतां गतः ॥१४॥
14. kimāgamanakāryaṃ te rājaputra mahābala ,
ayodhyādhipate vīra śāpāccaṇḍālatāṃ gataḥ.
14. kim āgamanakāryam te rājaputra mahābala
ayodhyādhipate vīra śāpāt caṇḍālatām gataḥ
14. rājaputra mahābala ayodhyādhipate vīra,
śāpāt caṇḍālatām gataḥ te kim āgamanakāryam (asti)?
14. O prince of great strength, O lord of Ayodhyā, O hero, what is your purpose in coming, having been reduced to the state of a caṇḍāla due to a curse?
अथ तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य राजा चण्डालतां गतः ।
अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यकोविदम् ॥१५॥
15. atha tadvākyamākarṇya rājā caṇḍālatāṃ gataḥ ,
abravīt prāñjalirvākyaṃ vākyajño vākyakovidam.
15. atha tat vākyam ākarṇya rājā caṇḍālatām gataḥ
abravīt prāñjaliḥ vākyam vākyajñaḥ vākyakovidam
15. atha tat vākyam ākarṇya caṇḍālatām gataḥ prāñjaliḥ vākyajñaḥ rājā vākyakovidam vākyam abravīt.
15. Then, having heard those words, the king, who had fallen into the state of a caṇḍāla and was himself eloquent, spoke with folded hands to the sage, who was skilled in discourse.
प्रत्याख्यातो ऽस्मि गुरुणा गुरुपुत्रैस्तथैव च ।
अनवाप्यैव तं कामं मया प्राप्तो विपर्ययः ॥१६॥
16. pratyākhyāto'smi guruṇā guruputraistathaiva ca ,
anavāpyaiva taṃ kāmaṃ mayā prāpto viparyayaḥ.
16. pratyākhyātaḥ asmi guruṇā guruputraiḥ tathā eva
ca anavāpya eva tam kāmam mayā prāptaḥ viparyayaḥ
16. asmi guruṇā guruputraiḥ tathā eva ca pratyākhyātaḥ
tam kāmam anavāpya eva mayā viparyayaḥ prāptaḥ
16. I have been rejected by my guru and likewise by his sons. Without even obtaining that desired object, I have met with a reversal of my situation.
सशरीरो दिवं यायामिति मे सौम्यदर्शनम् ।
मया चेष्टं क्रतुशतं तच्च नावाप्यते फलम् ॥१७॥
17. saśarīro divaṃ yāyāmiti me saumyadarśanam ,
mayā ceṣṭaṃ kratuśataṃ tacca nāvāpyate phalam.
17. saśarīraḥ divam yāyām iti me saumyadarśanam | mayā
ca iṣṭam kratuśatam tat ca na avāpyate phalam
17. iti me saumyadarśanam (yad) aham saśarīraḥ divam yāyām
mayā ca kratuśatam iṣṭam tat phalam ca na avāpyate
17. It is my earnest desire that I may ascend to heaven in this physical body. Even though a hundred Vedic rituals (yajña) have been performed by me, that desired fruit (phalam) has not been attained.
अनृतं नोक्त पूर्वं मे न च वक्ष्ये कदा चन ।
कृच्छ्रेष्वपि गतः सौम्य क्षत्रधर्मेण ते शपे ॥१८॥
18. anṛtaṃ nokta pūrvaṃ me na ca vakṣye kadā cana ,
kṛcchreṣvapi gataḥ saumya kṣatradharmeṇa te śape.
18. anṛtam na uktam pūrvam me na ca vakṣye kadā cana
kṛcchreṣu api gataḥ saumya kṣatradharmeṇa te śape
18. me anṛtam pūrvam na uktam ca na kadā cana vakṣye
saumya kṛcchreṣu api gataḥ te kṣatradharmeṇa śape
18. Untruth has never been spoken by me previously, nor will I ever speak it. Even when I am in distress, O gentle one, I swear to you by the constitution (dharma) of the warrior class.
यज्ञैर्बहुविधैरिष्टं प्रजा धर्मेण पालिताः ।
गुरवश्च महात्मानः शीलवृत्तेन तोषिताः ॥१९॥
19. yajñairbahuvidhairiṣṭaṃ prajā dharmeṇa pālitāḥ ,
guravaśca mahātmānaḥ śīlavṛttena toṣitāḥ.
19. yajñaiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ iṣṭam prajāḥ dharmeṇa
pālitāḥ guravaḥ ca mahātmānaḥ śīlavṛttena toṣitāḥ
19. bahuvidhaiḥ yajñaiḥ iṣṭam prajāḥ dharmeṇa
pālitāḥ ca mahātmānaḥ guravaḥ śīlavṛttena toṣitāḥ
19. Many kinds of sacrificial rituals (yajñas) have been performed, and subjects have been governed in accordance with the constitution (dharma). Furthermore, great-souled teachers (gurus) have been pleased through excellent conduct.
धर्मे प्रयतमानस्य यज्ञं चाहर्तुमिच्छतः ।
परितोषं न गच्छन्ति गुरवो मुनिपुंगव ॥२०॥
20. dharme prayatamānasya yajñaṃ cāhartumicchataḥ ,
paritoṣaṃ na gacchanti guravo munipuṃgava.
20. dharme prayatamānasya yajñam ca āhartum icchataḥ
| paritoṣam na gacchanti guravaḥ munipuṅgava
20. he munipuṅgava,
dharme prayatamānasya ca yajñam āhartum icchataḥ (janasya) guravaḥ paritoṣam na gacchanti
20. O chief among sages (muni), the gurus (guru) are not satisfied with someone who strives in the way of natural law (dharma) and desires to perform a Vedic ritual (yajña).
दैवमेव परं मन्ये पौरुषं तु निरर्थकम् ।
दैवेनाक्रम्यते सर्वं दैवं हि परमा गतिः ॥२१॥
21. daivameva paraṃ manye pauruṣaṃ tu nirarthakam ,
daivenākramyate sarvaṃ daivaṃ hi paramā gatiḥ.
21. daivam eva param manye pauruṣam tu nirarthakam
daivena ākramyate sarvam daivam hi paramā gatiḥ
21. daivam eva param manye pauruṣam tu nirarthakam
daivena sarvam ākramyate hi daivam paramā gatiḥ
21. I consider destiny (daiva) alone to be supreme, and human effort (pauruṣa) to be futile. Everything is overcome by destiny (daiva), for destiny (daiva) is indeed the ultimate course.
तस्य मे परमार्तस्य प्रसादमभिकाङ्क्षतः ।
कर्तुमर्हसि भद्रं ते दैवोपहतकर्मणः ॥२२॥
22. tasya me paramārtasya prasādamabhikāṅkṣataḥ ,
kartumarhasi bhadraṃ te daivopahatakarmaṇaḥ.
22. tasya me paramārtasya prasādam abhikāṅkṣataḥ
kartum arhasi bhadram te daivopahatakarmaṇaḥ
22. tasya me paramārtasya prasādam abhikāṅkṣataḥ
daivopahatakarmaṇaḥ kartum arhasi te bhadram
22. To me, who am deeply distressed, longing for grace (prasāda), and whose actions (karma) are thwarted by destiny (daiva), you ought to render aid. May good fortune (bhadra) be to you.
नान्यां गतिं गमिष्यामि नान्यः शरणमस्ति मे ।
दैवं पुरुषकारेण निवर्तयितुमर्हसि ॥२३॥
23. nānyāṃ gatiṃ gamiṣyāmi nānyaḥ śaraṇamasti me ,
daivaṃ puruṣakāreṇa nivartayitumarhasi.
23. na anyām gatim gamiṣyāmi na anyaḥ śaraṇam asti
me daivam puruṣakāreṇa nivartayitum arhasi
23. anyām gatim na gamiṣyāmi me anyaḥ śaraṇam na
asti daivam puruṣakāreṇa nivartayitum arhasi
23. I will not resort to any other path, nor is there any other refuge for me. You ought to avert destiny (daiva) through your human effort (puruṣakāra).
