तथा तु तं समादिश्य भ्रातरं रघुनन्दनः ।
बबन्धासिं महातेजा जाम्बूनदमयत्सरुम् ॥१॥
1. tathā tu taṃ samādiśya bhrātaraṃ raghunandanaḥ ,

1. The greatly glorious scion of Raghu (Rāma), having thus instructed his brother, fastened his sword, which had a hilt made of Jāmbūnada gold.
ततस्त्रिविणतं चापमादायात्मविभूषणम् ।
आबध्य च कलापौ द्वौ जगामोदग्रविक्रमः ॥२॥
2. tatastriviṇataṃ cāpamādāyātmavibhūṣaṇam ,
ābadhya ca kalāpau dvau jagāmodagravikramaḥ.

2. Then, the hero of mighty prowess, having taken his well-strung bow - his personal adornment - and having fastened the two quivers, set out.
तं वञ्चयानो राजेन्द्रमापतन्तं निरीक्ष्य वै ।
बभूवान्तर्हितस्त्रासात् पुनः संदर्शने ऽभवत् ॥३॥
3. taṃ vañcayāno rājendramāpatantaṃ nirīkṣya vai ,
babhūvāntarhitastrāsāt punaḥ saṃdarśane'bhavat.
3. tam vañcayānaḥ rājendram āpatantam nirīkṣya vai
babhūva antarhitaḥ trāsāt punaḥ saṃdarśane abhavat

3. Observing that one (the deer) deceiving the approaching king of kings, it (the deer) indeed became hidden out of fear, but then reappeared.
बद्धासिर्धनुरादाय प्रदुद्राव यतो मृगः ।
तं स पश्यति रूपेण द्योतमानमिवाग्रतः ॥४॥
4. baddhāsirdhanurādāya pradudrāva yato mṛgaḥ ,
taṃ sa paśyati rūpeṇa dyotamānamivāgrataḥ.
4. baddhāsiḥ dhanuḥ ādāya pradudrāva yataḥ mṛgaḥ
tam saḥ paśyati rūpeṇa dyotamānam iva agrataḥ
4. baddhāsiḥ,
dhanuḥ ādāya,
saḥ yataḥ mṛgaḥ (asti),
(tatra) pradudrāva.
saḥ tam rūpeṇa agrataḥ dyotamānam iva paśyati.
4. With his sword fastened and his bow taken, he pursued where the deer had gone. He sees it, appearing as if radiant before him.
अवेक्ष्यावेक्ष्य धावन्तं धनुष्पाणिर्महावने ।
अतिवृत्तमिषोः पाताल् लोभयानं कदा चन ॥५॥
5. avekṣyāvekṣya dhāvantaṃ dhanuṣpāṇirmahāvane ,
ativṛttamiṣoḥ pātāl lobhayānaṃ kadā cana.
5. avekṣyāvekṣya dhāvantam dhanuṣpāṇiḥ mahāvane
ativṛttam iṣoḥ pātāt lobhayānam kadā cana
5. dhanuṣpāṇiḥ mahāvane avekṣyāvekṣya dhāvantam

5. Holding his bow in the great forest, (Rāma saw the deer) running, repeatedly looking back, and sometimes luring (him) by staying just beyond the reach of his arrow.
शङ्कितं तु समुद्भ्रान्तमुत्पतन्तमिवाम्बरे ।
दश्यमानमदृश्यं च नवोद्देशेषु केषु चित् ॥६॥
6. śaṅkitaṃ tu samudbhrāntamutpatantamivāmbare ,
daśyamānamadṛśyaṃ ca navoddeśeṣu keṣu cit.
6. śaṅkitam tu samudbhrāntam utpatantam iva ambare
daśyamānam adṛśyam ca navoddeśeṣu keṣu cit
6. tu śaṅkitam samudbhrāntam ambare iva utpatantam
ca navoddeśeṣu keṣu cit daśyamānam adṛśyam
6. But (the deer appeared) apprehensive and utterly bewildered, as if leaping into the air, being seen and (then) unseen in certain new places.
छिन्नाभ्रैरिव संवीतं शारदं चन्द्रमण्डलम् ।
मुहूर्तादेव ददृशे मुहुर्दूरात् प्रकाशते ॥७॥
7. chinnābhrairiva saṃvītaṃ śāradaṃ candramaṇḍalam ,
muhūrtādeva dadṛśe muhurdūrāt prakāśate.
7. chinnābhraiḥ iva saṃvītam śāradam candramaṇḍalam
muhūrtāt eva dadṛśe muhuḥ dūrāt prakāśate
7. chinnābhraiḥ iva saṃvītam śāradam candramaṇḍalam

7. Like the autumnal disk of the moon veiled by scattered clouds, (it) was seen just for a moment, and then repeatedly appeared from a distance.
दर्शनादर्शनेनैव सो ऽपाकर्षत राघवम् ।
आसीत् क्रुद्धस्तु काकुत्स्थो विवशस्तेन मोहितः ॥८॥
8. darśanādarśanenaiva so'pākarṣata rāghavam ,
āsīt kruddhastu kākutstho vivaśastena mohitaḥ.
8. darśanādarśanena eva saḥ apākarṣata rāghavam
āsīt kruddhaḥ tu kākutsthaḥ vivaśaḥ tena mohitaḥ
8. saḥ darśanādarśanena eva rāghavam apākarṣata tu
kākutsthaḥ kruddhaḥ āsīt tena mohitaḥ vivaśaḥ
8. By (its) intermittent appearance and disappearance, it (the deer) drew Rāghava (Rāma) away. But Kakutstha (Rāma) became enraged, helpless, and bewildered by it.
अथावतस्थे सुश्रान्तश्छायामाश्रित्य शाद्वले ।
मृगैः परिवृतो वन्यैरदूरात् प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥९॥
9. athāvatasthe suśrāntaśchāyāmāśritya śādvale ,
mṛgaiḥ parivṛto vanyairadūrāt pratyadṛśyata.
9. atha avatasthé suśrāntaḥ chāyām āśritya śādvale
mṛgaiḥ parivṛtaḥ vanyaiḥ adūrāt pratyadṛśyata
9. suśrāntaḥ atha śādvale chāyām āśritya avatasthé
vanyaiḥ mṛgaiḥ parivṛtaḥ adūrāt pratyadṛśyata
9. Then, very tired, he rested in the shade on a grassy spot. Surrounded by wild deer, he was seen at a short distance.
दृष्ट्वा रामो महातेजास्तं हन्तुं कृतनिश्चयः ।
संधाय सुदृढे चापे विकृष्य बलवद्बली ॥१०॥
10. dṛṣṭvā rāmo mahātejāstaṃ hantuṃ kṛtaniścayaḥ ,
saṃdhāya sudṛḍhe cāpe vikṛṣya balavadbalī.
10. dṛṣṭvā rāmaḥ mahātejāḥ tam hantum kṛtaniścayaḥ
sandhāya sudṛḍhe cāpe vikṛṣya balavat balī
10. mahātejāḥ balī rāmaḥ tam dṛṣṭvā hantum
kṛtaniścayaḥ sudṛḍhe cāpe sandhāya balavat vikṛṣya
10. Having seen him, the greatly powerful Rama, determined to kill him, fixed an arrow on his very strong bow and, mighty as he was, drew it powerfully.
तमेव मृगमुद्दिश्य ज्वलन्तमिव पन्नगम् ।
मुमोच ज्वलितं दीप्तमस्त्रब्रह्मविनिर्मितम् ॥११॥
11. tameva mṛgamuddiśya jvalantamiva pannagam ,
mumoca jvalitaṃ dīptamastrabrahmavinirmitam.
11. tam eva mṛgam uddiśya jvalantam iva pannagam
mumoca jvalitam dīptam astrabrahmavinirmitam
11. tam eva mṛgam jvalantam iva pannagam uddiśya
jvalitam dīptam astrabrahmavinirmitam mumoca
11. Aiming at that very deer, which seemed like a blazing serpent, he released a fiery, radiant missile (astra) created by the power of Brahmā.
स भृशं मृगरूपस्य विनिर्भिद्य शरोत्तमः ।
मारीचस्यैव हृदयं विभेदाशनिसंनिभः ॥१२॥
12. sa bhṛśaṃ mṛgarūpasya vinirbhidya śarottamaḥ ,
mārīcasyaiva hṛdayaṃ vibhedāśanisaṃnibhaḥ.
12. saḥ bhṛśam mṛgarūpasya vinirbhidya śarottamaḥ
mārīcasya eva hṛdayam bibheda aśanisaṃnibhaḥ
12. saḥ śarottamaḥ bhṛśam aśanisaṃnibhaḥ mṛgarūpasya
mārīcasya eva hṛdayam vinirbhidya bibheda
12. That excellent arrow, greatly resembling a thunderbolt, completely pierced the heart of Marīca himself, who was in the form of a deer.
तालमात्रमथोत्पत्य न्यपतत् स शरातुरः ।
व्यनदद्भैरवं नादं धरण्यामल्पजीवितः ।
म्रियमाणस्तु मारीचो जहौ तां कृत्रिमां तनुम् ॥१३॥
13. tālamātramathotpatya nyapatat sa śarāturaḥ ,
vyanadadbhairavaṃ nādaṃ dharaṇyāmalpajīvitaḥ ,
mriyamāṇastu mārīco jahau tāṃ kṛtrimāṃ tanum.
13. tālamātram atha utpatya nyapatat saḥ
śarāturaḥ | vyanadat bhairavam nādam
dharaṇyām alpa-jīvitaḥ | mriyamāṇaḥ
tu mārīcaḥ jahau tām kṛtrimām tanum
13. atha saḥ śarāturaḥ tālamātram utpatya
nyapatat alpa-jīvitaḥ dharaṇyām
bhairavam nādam vyanadat mriyamāṇaḥ
tu mārīcaḥ tām kṛtrimām tanum jahau
13. Then, having sprung up just a palm's height, he fell down, afflicted by the arrow. With his life ebbing away, he roared a terrible sound on the ground. Maricha, as he was dying, abandoned that artificial body.
संप्राप्तकालमाज्ञाय चकार च ततः स्वरम् ।
सदृशं राघवस्यैव हा सीते लक्ष्मणेति च ॥१४॥
14. saṃprāptakālamājñāya cakāra ca tataḥ svaram ,
sadṛśaṃ rāghavasyaiva hā sīte lakṣmaṇeti ca.
14. samprāpta-kālam ājñāya cakāra ca tataḥ svaram |
sadṛśam rāghavasya eva hā sīte lakṣmaṇa iti ca
14. tataḥ saḥ samprāpta-kālam ājñāya rāghavasya eva
sadṛśam svaram cakāra ca hā sīte lakṣmaṇa iti ca
14. Realizing the opportune moment had arrived, he then emitted a cry exactly like Rama's, saying, "Oh Sita! Oh Lakshmana!"
तेन मर्मणि निर्विद्धः शरेणानुपमेन हि ।
मृगरूपं तु तत्त्यक्त्वा राक्षसं रूपमात्मनः ।
चक्रे स सुमहाकायो मारीचो जीवितं त्यजन् ॥१५॥
15. tena marmaṇi nirviddhaḥ śareṇānupamena hi ,
mṛgarūpaṃ tu tattyaktvā rākṣasaṃ rūpamātmanaḥ ,
cakre sa sumahākāyo mārīco jīvitaṃ tyajan.
15. tena marmaṇi nirviddaḥ śareṇa anupamena
hi | mṛga-rūpam tu tat tyaktvā
rākṣasam rūpam ātmanaḥ | cakre saḥ
su-mahā-kāyaḥ mārīcaḥ jīvitam tyajan
15. hi tena anupamena śareṇa marmaṇi nirviddaḥ,
saḥ su-mahā-kāyaḥ mārīcaḥ jīvitam tyajan tu tat mṛga-rūpam tyaktvā ātmanaḥ rākṣasam rūpam cakre
15. Indeed, pierced in the vital spot by that incomparable arrow, Maricha, who was exceedingly large-bodied, abandoning that deer form, assumed his own demonic form as he gave up his life.
ततो विचित्रकेयूरः सर्वाभरणभूषितः ।
हेममाली महादंष्ट्रो राक्षसो ऽभूच्छराहतः ॥१६॥
16. tato vicitrakeyūraḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ ,
hemamālī mahādaṃṣṭro rākṣaso'bhūccharāhataḥ.
16. tataḥ vicitra-keyūraḥ sarva-ābharaṇa-bhūṣitaḥ |
hema-mālī mahā-daṃṣṭraḥ rākṣasaḥ abhūt śara-āhataḥ
16. tataḥ śara-āhataḥ rākṣasaḥ vicitra-keyūraḥ
sarva-ābharaṇa-bhūṣitaḥ hema-mālī mahā-daṃṣṭraḥ abhūt
16. Then the demon, struck by the arrow, appeared with ornate armlets, adorned with all ornaments, wearing a golden garland, and possessing large fangs.
तं दृष्ट्वा पतितं भूमौ राक्षसं घोरदर्शनम् ।
जगाम मनसा सीतां लक्ष्मणस्य वचः स्मरन् ॥१७॥
17. taṃ dṛṣṭvā patitaṃ bhūmau rākṣasaṃ ghoradarśanam ,
jagāma manasā sītāṃ lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ smaran.
17. tam dṛṣṭvā patitam bhūmau rākṣasam ghoradarśanam
jagāma manasā sīṭām lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ smaran
17. tam ghoradarśanam rākṣasam bhūmau patitam dṛṣṭvā

17. Seeing that horrifying demon fallen on the ground, Rāma's mind turned to Sītā, remembering Lakṣmaṇa's words.
हा सीते लक्ष्मणेत्येवमाक्रुश्य तु महास्वरम् ।
ममार राक्षसः सो ऽयं श्रुत्वा सीता कथं भवेत् ॥१८॥
18. hā sīte lakṣmaṇetyevamākruśya tu mahāsvaram ,
mamāra rākṣasaḥ so'yaṃ śrutvā sītā kathaṃ bhavet.
18. hā sīte lakṣmaṇa iti evam ākruśya tu mahāsvaram
mamāra rākṣasaḥ saḥ ayam śrutvā sīṭā katham bhavet
18. hā sīte lakṣmaṇa iti evam mahāsvaram ākruśya tu
saḥ ayam rākṣasaḥ mamāra sīṭā śrutvā katham bhavet
18. 'Ah, Sītā! Lakṣmaṇa!' - having cried out loudly in this manner, that demon died. (Rāma thinks:) 'Having heard this cry, what will become of Sītā?'
लक्ष्मणश्च महाबाहुः कामवस्थां गमिष्यति ।
इति संचिन्त्य धर्मात्मा रामो हृष्टतनूरुहः ॥१९॥
19. lakṣmaṇaśca mahābāhuḥ kāmavasthāṃ gamiṣyati ,
iti saṃcintya dharmātmā rāmo hṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ.
19. lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mahābāhuḥ kām avasthām gamiṣyati
iti saṃcintya dharmātmā rāmaḥ hṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ
19. mahābāhuḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ ca kām avasthām gamiṣyati
iti saṃcintya dharmātmā rāmaḥ hṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ
19. 'And what state will the mighty-armed Lakṣmaṇa reach?' - having thus pondered, Rāma, whose very nature (dharma) was righteousness, stood with the hairs on his body bristling.
तत्र रामं भयं तीव्रमाविवेश विषादजम् ।
राक्षसं मृगरूपं तं हत्वा श्रुत्वा च तत् स्वरम् ॥२०॥
20. tatra rāmaṃ bhayaṃ tīvramāviveśa viṣādajam ,
rākṣasaṃ mṛgarūpaṃ taṃ hatvā śrutvā ca tat svaram.
20. tatra rāmam bhayam tīvram āviveśa viṣādajam
rākṣasam mṛgarūpam tam hatvā śrutvā ca tat svaram
20. tatra rāmam mṛgarūpam tam rākṣasam hatvā ca tat
svaram śrutvā viṣādajam tīvram bhayam āviveśa
20. After killing that demon, who was in the form of a deer, and having heard its cry, intense fear, born of sorrow, gripped Rāma there.
निहत्य पृषतं चान्यं मांसमादाय राघवः ।
त्वरमाणो जनस्थानं ससाराभिमुखस्तदा ॥२१॥
21. nihatya pṛṣataṃ cānyaṃ māṃsamādāya rāghavaḥ ,
tvaramāṇo janasthānaṃ sasārābhimukhastadā.
21. nihitya pṛṣatam ca anyam māṃsam ādāya rāghavaḥ
tvaramāṇaḥ janasthānam sasāra abhimukhaḥ tadā
21. tadā rāghavaḥ anyam pṛṣatam ca nihitya māṃsam
ādāya tvaramāṇaḥ janasthānam abhimukhaḥ sasāra
21. Then, Rama, having killed another spotted deer and taken its meat, hastened, proceeding towards Janasthana.
