रामो बहून्यहान्येव तद्गीतं परमाद्भुतम् ।
शुश्राव मुनिभिः सार्धं राजभिः सह वानरैः ॥१॥
1. rāmo bahūnyahānyeva tadgītaṃ paramādbhutam ,
śuśrāva munibhiḥ sārdhaṃ rājabhiḥ saha vānaraiḥ.

1. Rāma, indeed, for many days, heard that exceedingly wonderful song, accompanied by sages (muni), kings, and monkeys.
तस्मिन् गीते तु विज्ञाय सीतापुत्रौ कुशीलवौ ।
तस्याः परिषदो मध्ये रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. tasmin gīte tu vijñāya sītāputrau kuśīlavau ,
tasyāḥ pariṣado madhye rāmo vacanamabravīt.

2. When Rāma recognized Sītā's two sons, Kuśa and Lava, through that song, he spoke these words amidst that assembly.
मद्वचो ब्रूत गच्छध्वमिति
भगवतो ऽन्तिकम् ॥३॥
3. madvaco brūta gacchadhvamiti
bhagavato'ntikam.
3. mat vacaḥ brūta gacchadhvam
iti bhagavataḥ antikam
3. iti gacchadhvam bhagavataḥ
antikam mat vacaḥ brūta
3. “Go and convey my message to the venerable one.”
यदि शुद्धसमाचारा यदि वा वीतकल्मषा ।
करोत्विहात्मनः शुद्धिमनुमान्य महामुनिम् ॥४॥
4. yadi śuddhasamācārā yadi vā vītakalmaṣā ,
karotvihātmanaḥ śuddhimanumānya mahāmunim.
4. yadi śuddhasamācārā yadi vā vītakalmaṣā
karotu iha ātmanaḥ śuddhim anumānya mahāmunim
4. yadi śuddhasamācārā yadi vā vītakalmaṣā,

4. If she is of pure conduct, or if she is indeed free from sin, let her perform her own purification here, having obtained the permission of the great sage (muni).
छन्दं मुनेस्तु विज्ञाय सीतायाश्च मनोगतम् ।
प्रत्ययं दातुकामायास्ततः शंसत मे लघु ॥५॥
5. chandaṃ munestu vijñāya sītāyāśca manogatam ,
pratyayaṃ dātukāmāyāstataḥ śaṃsata me laghu.
5. chandaṃ muneḥ tu vijñāya sītāyāḥ ca manogatam
pratyayam dātukāmāyāḥ tataḥ śaṃsata me laghu
5. muneḥ ca sītāyāḥ manogatam chandaṃ vijñāya,
tataḥ pratyayam dātukāmāyāḥ me laghu śaṃsata
5. Having understood the sage's (muni) intention and Sītā's state of mind, then quickly inform me about her who wishes to offer proof.
श्वः प्रभाते तु शपथं मैथिली जनकात्मजा ।
करोतु परिषन्मध्ये शोधनार्थं ममेह च ॥६॥
6. śvaḥ prabhāte tu śapathaṃ maithilī janakātmajā ,
karotu pariṣanmadhye śodhanārthaṃ mameha ca.

karotu pariṣanmadhye śodhanārtham mama iha ca
6. śvaḥ prabhāte tu maithilī janakātmajā mama iha

6. Tomorrow morning, let Maithilī, Janaka's daughter, indeed take an oath in the assembly for the purpose of purifying me here.
श्रुत्वा तु राघवस्यैतद्वचः परममद्भुतम् ।
दूताः संप्रययुर्वाटं यत्रास्ते मुनिपुंगवः ॥७॥
7. śrutvā tu rāghavasyaitadvacaḥ paramamadbhutam ,
dūtāḥ saṃprayayurvāṭaṃ yatrāste munipuṃgavaḥ.
7. śrutvā tu rāghavasya etat vacaḥ paramam adbhutam
dūtāḥ samprayayuḥ vāṭam yatra āste munipuṅgavaḥ
7. tu dūtāḥ rāghavasya etat paramam adbhutam vacaḥ śrutvā,
yatra munipuṅgavaḥ āste,
(tatra) vāṭam samprayayuḥ
7. Having heard this supremely wonderful speech of Rāghava, the messengers indeed proceeded to the hermitage where the foremost of sages (muni) resided.
ते प्रणम्य महात्मानं ज्वलन्तममितप्रभम् ।
ऊचुस्ते राम वाक्यानि मृदूनि मधुराणि च ॥८॥
8. te praṇamya mahātmānaṃ jvalantamamitaprabham ,
ūcuste rāma vākyāni mṛdūni madhurāṇi ca.
8. te praṇamya mahātmānam jvalantam amitaprabham
ūcuḥ te rāma vākyāni mṛdūni madhurāṇi ca
8. te,
mahātmānam jvalantam amitaprabham praṇamya,
te rāma mṛdūni ca madhurāṇi vākyāni ūcuḥ
8. Having bowed to the great soul (mahātmā), who was shining with immeasurable splendor, they spoke soft and sweet words from Rāma.
तेषां तद्भाषितं श्रुत्वा रामस्य च मनोगतम् ।
विज्ञाय सुमहातेजा मुनिर्वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. teṣāṃ tadbhāṣitaṃ śrutvā rāmasya ca manogatam ,
vijñāya sumahātejā munirvākyamathābravīt.
9. teṣām tat bhāṣitam śrutvā rāmasya ca manogatam
vijñāya sumahātejāḥ muniḥ vākyam atha abravīt
9. Having heard their words and discerned Rāma's innermost thoughts, the exceedingly brilliant sage (muni) then spoke.
एवं भवतु भद्रं वो यथा तुष्यति राघवः ।
तथा करिष्यते सीता दैवतं हि पतिः स्त्रियाः ॥१०॥
10. evaṃ bhavatu bhadraṃ vo yathā tuṣyati rāghavaḥ ,
tathā kariṣyate sītā daivataṃ hi patiḥ striyāḥ.
10. evam bhavatu bhadram vaḥ yathā tuṣyati rāghavaḥ
| tathā kariṣyate sītā daivatam hi patiḥ striyāḥ
10. "So be it. May good fortune be with you. Sītā will act in a way that pleases Rāghava, for truly, a husband is a deity to a woman."
तथोक्ता मुनिना सर्वे रामदूता महौजसः ।
प्रत्येत्य राघवं सर्वे मुनिवाक्यं बभाषिरे ॥११॥
11. tathoktā muninā sarve rāmadūtā mahaujasaḥ ,
pratyetya rāghavaṃ sarve munivākyaṃ babhāṣire.
11. tathā uktāḥ muninā sarve rāmadūtāḥ mahāojasaḥ
| pratietya rāghavam sarve munivākyam babhāṣire
11. Having been thus addressed by the sage (muni), all those immensely powerful messengers of Rāma returned to Rāghava and reported the sage's (muni) words.
ततः प्रहृष्टः काकुत्स्थः श्रुत्वा वाक्यं महात्मनः ।
ऋषींस्तत्र समेतांश्च राज्ञश्चैवाभ्यभाषत ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ kākutsthaḥ śrutvā vākyaṃ mahātmanaḥ ,
ṛṣīṃstatra sametāṃśca rājñaścaivābhyabhāṣata.
12. tataḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ kākutsthaḥ śrutvā vākyam mahātmanaḥ
| ṛṣīn tatra sametān ca rājñaḥ ca eva abhyabhāṣata
12. Then, Rāma (Kakutstha), greatly delighted upon hearing the words of the great-souled one, addressed the sages and kings who were assembled there.
भगवन्तः सशिष्या वै सानुगश्च नराधिपाः ।
पश्यन्तु सीताशपथं यश्चैवान्यो ऽभिकाङ्क्षते ॥१३॥
13. bhagavantaḥ saśiṣyā vai sānugaśca narādhipāḥ ,
paśyantu sītāśapathaṃ yaścaivānyo'bhikāṅkṣate.
13. bhagavantaḥ saśiṣyā vai sānugaḥ ca narādhipāḥ |
paśyantu sītāśapatham yaḥ ca eva anyaḥ abhikāṅkṣate
13. Let the venerable sages, along with their disciples, and the kings, along with their followers, all witness Sītā's oath, and so too should anyone else who desires it.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राघवस्य महात्मनः ।
सर्वेषमृषिमुख्यानां साधुवादो महानभूत् ॥१४॥
14. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
sarveṣamṛṣimukhyānāṃ sādhuvādo mahānabhūt.
14. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ
| sarveṣām ṛṣimukhyānām sādhuvādaḥ mahān abhūt
14. Having heard that statement from the great-souled Rāma, a great acclamation of 'excellent!' arose from all the principal sages.
राजानश्च महात्मानः प्रशंसन्ति स्म राघवम् ।
उपपन्नं नरश्रेष्ठ त्वय्येव भुवि नान्यतः ॥१५॥
15. rājānaśca mahātmānaḥ praśaṃsanti sma rāghavam ,
upapannaṃ naraśreṣṭha tvayyeva bhuvi nānyataḥ.
15. rājānaḥ ca mahātmanaḥ praśaṃsanti sma rāghavam |
upapannam naraśreṣṭha tvayi eva bhuvi na anyataḥ
15. And the magnanimous kings praised Rāma, saying, "This is indeed befitting only of you, O best of men, on this earth, and of no one else!"
एवं विनिश्चयं कृत्वा श्वोभूत इति राघवः ।
विसर्जयामास तदा सर्वांस्ताञ् शत्रुसूदनः ॥१६॥
16. evaṃ viniścayaṃ kṛtvā śvobhūta iti rāghavaḥ ,
visarjayāmāsa tadā sarvāṃstāñ śatrusūdanaḥ.
16. evam viniścayam kṛtvā śvobhūtaḥ iti rāghavaḥ
| visarjayāmāsa tadā sarvān tān śatrusūdanaḥ
16. Having thus made the decision that it would occur on the morrow, Rāma, the destroyer of foes, then dismissed all of them.
