अवाङ्मुखमथो दीनं दृष्ट्वा सोममिवाप्लुतम् ।
राघवं लक्ष्मणो वाक्यं हृष्टो मधुरमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. avāṅmukhamatho dīnaṃ dṛṣṭvā somamivāplutam ,
rāghavaṃ lakṣmaṇo vākyaṃ hṛṣṭo madhuramabravīt.

1. Then, seeing Rāghava, downcast and dejected like the moon eclipsed, Lakshmana, full of joy, spoke sweet words.
न संतापं महाबाहो मदर्थं कर्तुमर्हसि ।
पूर्वनिर्माणबद्धा हि कालस्य गतिरीदृशी ॥२॥
2. na saṃtāpaṃ mahābāho madarthaṃ kartumarhasi ,
pūrvanirmāṇabaddhā hi kālasya gatirīdṛśī.
2. na saṃtāpam mahābāho madartham kartum arhasi
pūrvanirmāṇabaddhā hi kālasya gatiḥ īdṛśī
2. mahābāho,
madartham saṃtāpam kartum na arhasi hi.
kālasya gatiḥ pūrvanirmāṇabaddhā īdṛśī.
2. O mighty-armed one, you should not feel sorrow for my sake. Indeed, the course of time is bound by prior decree, such is its flow.
जहि मां सौम्य विस्रब्दः प्रतिज्ञां परिपालय ।
हीनप्रतिज्ञाः काकुत्स्थ प्रयान्ति नरकं नराः ॥३॥
3. jahi māṃ saumya visrabdaḥ pratijñāṃ paripālaya ,
hīnapratijñāḥ kākutstha prayānti narakaṃ narāḥ.
3. jahi mām saumya visrabdhaḥ pratijñām paripālaya
hīnapratjñāḥ kākutstha prayānti narakam narāḥ
3. saumya,
visrabdhaḥ mām jahi,
pratijñām paripālaya.
kākutstha,
hīnapratjñāḥ narāḥ narakam prayānti.
3. O gentle one, confidently kill me and uphold your vow. O Kakutstha, people who have broken their vows go to hell (naraka).
यदि प्रीतिर्महाराज यद्यनुग्राह्यता मयि ।
जहि मां निर्विशङ्कस्त्वं धर्मं वर्धय राघव ॥४॥
4. yadi prītirmahārāja yadyanugrāhyatā mayi ,
jahi māṃ nirviśaṅkastvaṃ dharmaṃ vardhaya rāghava.
4. yadi prītiḥ mahārāja yadi anugrāhyatā mayi jahi
mām nirviśaṅkaḥ tvam dharmam vardhaya rāghava
4. mahārāja,
yadi prītiḥ mayi (asti),
yadi anugrāhyatā (asti) (tarhi).
rāghava,
tvam nirviśaṅkaḥ mām jahi,
dharmam vardhaya.
4. O great king, if there is affection for me, if I am worthy of your favor, then, O Rāghava, kill me without hesitation and promote the constitutional law (dharma).
लक्ष्मणेन तथोक्तस्तु रामः प्रचलितेन्द्रियः ।
मन्त्रिणः समुपानीय तथैव च पुरोधसं ॥५॥
5. lakṣmaṇena tathoktastu rāmaḥ pracalitendriyaḥ ,
mantriṇaḥ samupānīya tathaiva ca purodhasaṃ.
5. lakṣmaṇena tathā uktaḥ tu rāmaḥ pracalitendriyaḥ
mantriṇaḥ samupānīya tathā eva ca purodhasam
5. lakṣmaṇena tathā uktaḥ tu,
pracalitendriyaḥ rāmaḥ mantriṇaḥ ca purodhasam tathaiva samupānīya (acintayat).
5. Thus spoken to by Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma, whose senses were agitated, gathered his ministers and also the royal priest.
अब्रवीच्च यथावृत्तं तेषां मध्ये नराधिपः ।
दुर्वासोऽभिगमं चैव प्रतिज्ञां तापसस्य च ॥६॥
6. abravīcca yathāvṛttaṃ teṣāṃ madhye narādhipaḥ ,
durvāso'bhigamaṃ caiva pratijñāṃ tāpasasya ca.
6. abravīt ca yathāvṛttam teṣām madhye narādhipaḥ
durvāsaḥ abhigamam ca eva pratijñām tāpasasya ca
6. narādhipaḥ teṣām madhye abravīt ca yathāvṛttam
durvāsaḥ abhigamam ca eva tāpasasya pratijñām ca
6. The king spoke among them regarding what had happened: the approach of Durvāsas, and the ascetic's vow.
तच्छ्रुत्वा मन्त्रिणः सर्वे सोपाध्यायाः समासत ।
वसिष्ठस्तु महातेजा वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥७॥
7. tacchrutvā mantriṇaḥ sarve sopādhyāyāḥ samāsata ,
vasiṣṭhastu mahātejā vākyametaduvāca ha.
7. tat śrutvā mantriṇaḥ sarve sa-upādhyāyāḥ samāsata
vasiṣṭhaḥ tu mahātejāḥ vākyam etat uvāca ha
7. tat śrutvā sarve sa-upādhyāyāḥ mantriṇaḥ samāsata.
tu mahātejāḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ etat vākyam uvāca ha
7. Having heard that, all the ministers with their preceptors sat together. Then Vasiṣṭha, the greatly radiant one, spoke this statement.
दृष्टमेतन्महाबाहो क्षयं ते लोमहर्षणम् ।
लक्ष्मणेन वियोगश्च तव राम महायशः ॥८॥
8. dṛṣṭametanmahābāho kṣayaṃ te lomaharṣaṇam ,
lakṣmaṇena viyogaśca tava rāma mahāyaśaḥ.
8. dṛṣṭam etat mahābāho kṣayam te lomaharṣaṇam
lakṣmaṇena viyogaḥ ca tava rāma mahāyaśaḥ
8. mahābāho rāma mahāyaśaḥ,
etat lomaharṣaṇam kṣayam te dṛṣṭam,
ca tava lakṣmaṇena viyogaḥ
8. "O mighty-armed one, this terrifying destruction is foreseen for you, and separation from Lakṣmaṇa, O greatly renowned Rāma."
त्यजैनं बलवान् कालो मा प्रतिज्ञां वृथा कृथाः ।
विनष्टायां प्रतिज्ञायां धर्मो हि विलयं व्रजेत् ॥९॥
9. tyajainaṃ balavān kālo mā pratijñāṃ vṛthā kṛthāḥ ,
vinaṣṭāyāṃ pratijñāyāṃ dharmo hi vilayaṃ vrajet.
9. tyaja enam balavān kālaḥ mā pratijñām vṛthā kṛthāḥ
vinaṣṭāyām pratijñāyām dharmaḥ hi vilayam vrajet
9. enam tyaja! kālaḥ balavān.
mā pratijñām vṛthā kṛthāḥ.
hi vinaṣṭāyām pratijñāyām dharmaḥ vilayam vrajet
9. "Abandon him! Time is powerful. Do not make your vow useless. For if the vow is broken, natural law (dharma) will indeed perish."
ततो धर्मे विनष्टे तु त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरम् ।
सदेवर्षिगणं सर्वं विनश्येत न संशयः ॥१०॥
10. tato dharme vinaṣṭe tu trailokye sacarācaram ,
sadevarṣigaṇaṃ sarvaṃ vinaśyeta na saṃśayaḥ.
10. tataḥ dharme vinaṣṭe tu trailokye sacarācaram
sadevarṣigaṇam sarvam vinaśyeta na saṃśayaḥ
10. dharme vinaṣṭe tu tataḥ sacarācaram sadevarṣigaṇam
sarvam trailokye vinaśyeta na saṃśayaḥ
10. Then, if the natural law (dharma) is indeed destroyed, all the three worlds - including their moving and non-moving creatures, and all the groups of gods and sages - would perish, there is no doubt.
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल त्रैलोक्यस्याभिपालनम् ।
लक्ष्मणस्य वधेनाद्य जगत् स्वस्थं कुरुष्व ह ॥११॥
11. sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla trailokyasyābhipālanam ,
lakṣmaṇasya vadhenādya jagat svasthaṃ kuruṣva ha.
11. saḥ tvam puruṣaśārdūla trailokyasya abhipālanam
lakṣmaṇasya vadhena adya jagat svastham kuruṣva ha
11. puruṣaśārdūla saḥ tvam trailokyasya abhipālanam
adya lakṣmaṇasya vadhena jagat svastham kuruṣva ha
11. O tiger among men, you, for the safeguarding of the three worlds, must now restore the world to its proper state (svasthaṃ) by slaying Lakshmana.
तेषां तत् समवेतानां वाक्यं धर्मार्थसंहितम् ।
श्रुत्वा परिषदो मध्ये रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. teṣāṃ tat samavetānāṃ vākyaṃ dharmārthasaṃhitam ,
śrutvā pariṣado madhye rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt.
12. teṣām tat samavetānām vākyam dharmārthasaṃhitam
śrutvā pariṣadaḥ madhye rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt
12. rāmaḥ pariṣadaḥ madhye samavetānām teṣām tat
dharmārthasaṃhitam vākyam śrutvā lakṣmaṇam abravīt
12. Rama, having heard that reasonable and beneficial speech from those who were assembled in the midst of the assembly, spoke to Lakshmana.
विसर्जये त्वां सौमित्रे मा भूद्धर्मविपर्ययः ।
त्यागो वधो वा विहितः साधूनामुभयं समम् ॥१३॥
13. visarjaye tvāṃ saumitre mā bhūddharmaviparyayaḥ ,
tyāgo vadho vā vihitaḥ sādhūnāmubhayaṃ samam.
13. visarjaye tvām saumitre mā bhūt dharmaviparyayaḥ
tyāgaḥ vadhaḥ vā vihitaḥ sādhūnām ubhayam samam
13. saumitre tvām visarjaye mā dharmaviparyayaḥ bhūt
sādhūnām tyāgaḥ vā vadhaḥ ubhayam samam vihitaḥ
13. O son of Sumitra, I must abandon you, lest there be a reversal of natural law (dharma). For righteous individuals, both abandonment and killing are deemed equivalent.
रामेण भाषिते वाक्ये बाष्पव्याकुलितेक्षणः ।
लक्ष्मणस्त्वरितः प्रायात् स्वगृहं न विवेश ह ॥१४॥
14. rāmeṇa bhāṣite vākye bāṣpavyākulitekṣaṇaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇastvaritaḥ prāyāt svagṛhaṃ na viveśa ha.

lakṣmaṇaḥ tvaritaḥ prāyāt svagṛham na viveśa ha

14. After Rama spoke, Lakshmana, with eyes clouded by tears, quickly departed, but he did not enter his own house.
स गत्वा सरयूतीरमुपस्पृश्य कृताञ्जलिः ।
निगृह्य सर्वस्रोतांसि निःश्वासं न मुमोच ह ॥१५॥
15. sa gatvā sarayūtīramupaspṛśya kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
nigṛhya sarvasrotāṃsi niḥśvāsaṃ na mumoca ha.
15. sa gatvā sarayūtīram upaspṛśya kṛtāñjaliḥ
nigṛhya sarvasrotāṃsi niḥśvāsam na mumoca ha
15. sa sarayūtīram gatvā upaspṛśya kṛtāñjaliḥ
sarvasrotāṃsi nigṛhya niḥśvāsam na mumoca ha
15. He (Lakshmana) went to the bank of the Sarayu, performed a ritual ablution, and with folded hands (kṛtāñjaliḥ), restraining all his vital energies (srotāṃsi), he did not exhale.
अनुच्छ्वसन्तं युक्तं तं सशक्राः साप्सरोगणाः ।
देवाः सर्षिगणाः सर्वे पुष्पैरवकिरंस्तदा ॥१६॥
16. anucchvasantaṃ yuktaṃ taṃ saśakrāḥ sāpsarogaṇāḥ ,
devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ sarve puṣpairavakiraṃstadā.
16. anucchvasantam yuktam tam saśakrāḥ sāpsarogaṇāḥ
devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ sarve puṣpaiḥ avakiran tadā
16. tadā saśakrāḥ sāpsarogaṇāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ sarve
devāḥ anucchvasantam yuktam tam puṣpaiḥ avakiran
16. Then, all the gods, along with Indra, the hosts of apsaras, and the groups of sages (ṛṣi), showered him - who was holding his breath and perfectly concentrated (yukta) - with flowers.
अदृश्यं सर्वमनुजैः सशरीरं महाबलम् ।
प्रगृह्य लक्ष्मणं शक्रो दिवं संप्रविवेश ह ॥१७॥
17. adṛśyaṃ sarvamanujaiḥ saśarīraṃ mahābalam ,
pragṛhya lakṣmaṇaṃ śakro divaṃ saṃpraviveśa ha.

pragṛhya lakṣmaṇam śakraḥ divam saṃpraviveśa ha
17. śakraḥ sarvamanujaiḥ adṛśyam saśarīram mahābalam

17. Taking the mighty Lakshmana, who was invisible to all humans and still in his body, Indra indeed entered heaven.
ततो विष्णोश्चतुर्भागमागतं सुरसत्तमाः ।
हृष्टाः प्रमुदिताः सर्वे ऽपूजयनृषिभिः सह ॥१८॥
18. tato viṣṇoścaturbhāgamāgataṃ surasattamāḥ ,
hṛṣṭāḥ pramuditāḥ sarve'pūjayanṛṣibhiḥ saha.
18. tataḥ viṣṇoḥ catur_bhāgam āgatam surasattamāḥ
hṛṣṭāḥ pramuditāḥ sarve apūjayan ṛṣibhiḥ saha
18. tataḥ viṣṇoḥ catur_bhāgam āgatam surasattamāḥ
hṛṣṭāḥ pramuditāḥ sarve ṛṣibhiḥ saha apūjayan
18. Then, all the best among the gods, delighted and greatly pleased, along with the sages, worshipped what had come as a fourth part of Viṣṇu.
