स वीक्षमाणस्तत्रस्थो मार्गमाणश्च मैथिलीम् ।
अवेक्षमाणश्च महीं सर्वां तामन्ववैक्षत ॥१॥

1. Standing there, he surveyed the entire land (or area) thoroughly while searching for Maithilī (Sītā) and observing everything.
सन्तान कलताभिश्च पादपैरुपशोभिताम् ।
दिव्यगन्धरसोपेतां सर्वतः समलंकृताम् ॥२॥
2. santāna kalatābhiśca pādapairupaśobhitām ,
divyagandharasopetāṃ sarvataḥ samalaṃkṛtām.

2. Adorned with its abundant offspring and families, as well as with trees, it was endowed with divine fragrance and taste, and was completely embellished from all sides.
तां स नन्दनसंकाशां मृगपक्षिभिरावृताम् ।
हर्म्यप्रासादसंबाधां कोकिलाकुलनिःस्वनाम् ॥३॥
3. tāṃ sa nandanasaṃkāśāṃ mṛgapakṣibhirāvṛtām ,
harmyaprāsādasaṃbādhāṃ kokilākulaniḥsvanām.

3. He saw that (place), which resembled Nandanavana (Indra's celestial garden), teeming with deer and birds, crowded with mansions and palaces, and filled with the sounds of excited cuckoos.
काञ्चनोत्पलपद्माभिर्वापीभिरुपशोभिताम् ।
बह्वासनकुथोपेतां बहुभूमिगृहायुताम् ॥४॥

4. Adorned with pools rich in golden water lilies and lotuses, it was provided with many seats and coverings, and contained numerous underground chambers.
सर्वर्तुकुसुमै रम्यैः फलवद्भिश्च पादपैः ।
पुष्पितानामशोकानां श्रिया सूर्योदयप्रभाम् ॥५॥

5. Adorned with lovely flowers of all seasons and fruit-bearing trees, it had the splendor of blooming aśoka trees, radiant like the glow of sunrise.
प्रदीप्तामिव तत्रस्थो मारुतिः समुदैक्षत ।
निष्पत्रशाखां विहगैः क्रियमाणामिवासकृत् ।
विनिष्पतद्भिः शतशश्चित्रैः पुष्पावतंसकैः ॥६॥
6. pradīptāmiva tatrastho mārutiḥ samudaikṣata ,
niṣpatraśākhāṃ vihagaiḥ kriyamāṇāmivāsakṛt ,
viniṣpatadbhiḥ śataśaścitraiḥ puṣpāvataṃsakaiḥ.

6. Standing there, Hanumān (māruti) gazed upon it as if ablaze, its branches appearing repeatedly stripped bare by birds, as it were, due to hundreds of colorful flower clusters constantly falling.
आमूलपुष्पनिचितैरशोकैः शोकनाशनैः ।
पुष्पभारातिभारैश्च स्पृशद्भिरिव मेदिनीम् ॥७॥
7. āmūlapuṣpanicitairaśokaiḥ śokanāśanaiḥ ,
puṣpabhārātibhāraiśca spṛśadbhiriva medinīm.

7. By Aśoka trees, covered with flowers from their very roots, dispelling sorrow, and with such an excessive burden of blossoms that they seemed to touch the earth.
कर्णिकारैः कुसुमितैः किंशुकैश्च सुपुष्पितैः ।
स देशः प्रभया तेषां प्रदीप्त इव सर्वतः ॥८॥
8. karṇikāraiḥ kusumitaiḥ kiṃśukaiśca supuṣpitaiḥ ,
sa deśaḥ prabhayā teṣāṃ pradīpta iva sarvataḥ.

8. With flowering Karṇikāra trees and profusely blooming Kiṃśuka trees, that place appeared as if ablaze everywhere with their radiance.
पुंनागाः सप्तपर्णाश्च चम्पकोद्दालकास्तथा ।
विवृद्धमूला बहवः शोभन्ते स्म सुपुष्पिताः ॥९॥
9. puṃnāgāḥ saptaparṇāśca campakoddālakāstathā ,
vivṛddhamūlā bahavaḥ śobhante sma supuṣpitāḥ.
9. punnāgāḥ saptaparṇāḥ ca campaka-uddālakāḥ tathā
vivṛddha-mūlāḥ bahavaḥ śobhante sma supuṣpitāḥ

9. Many Punnāga, Saptaparṇa, Campaka, and Uddālaka trees, with their well-developed roots, shone brightly, profusely blooming.
शातकुम्भनिभाः के चित् के चिदग्निशिखोपमाः ।
नीलाञ्जननिभाः के चित्तत्राशोकाः सहस्रशः ॥१०॥
10. śātakumbhanibhāḥ ke cit ke cidagniśikhopamāḥ ,
nīlāñjananibhāḥ ke cittatrāśokāḥ sahasraśaḥ.

nīlāñjananibhāḥ ke cit tatra aśokāḥ sahasraśaḥ

10. Some (aśoka trees) shone like refined gold, some resembled flames of fire, and others were like blue collyrium; there were thousands of aśoka trees.
नन्दनं विविधोद्यानं चित्रं चैत्ररथं यथा ।
अतिवृत्तमिवाचिन्त्यं दिव्यं रम्यं श्रिया वृतम् ॥११॥
11. nandanaṃ vividhodyānaṃ citraṃ caitrarathaṃ yathā ,
ativṛttamivācintyaṃ divyaṃ ramyaṃ śriyā vṛtam.

ativṛttam iva acintyam divyam ramyam śriyā vṛtam

11. This garden was like the Nandana (nandana) garden, a beautiful collection of various parks, similar to the Caitraratha (caitraratha) garden, appearing inconceivable, as if surpassing all others, divine, delightful, and endowed with great splendor.
द्वितीयमिव चाकाशं पुष्पज्योतिर्गणायुतम् ।
पुष्परत्नशतैश्चित्रं पञ्चमं सागरं यथा ॥१२॥
12. dvitīyamiva cākāśaṃ puṣpajyotirgaṇāyutam ,
puṣparatnaśataiścitraṃ pañcamaṃ sāgaraṃ yathā.

puṣparatnaśataiḥ citram pañcamam sāgaram yathā

12. And it was like a second firmament (ākāśa), filled with hosts of glowing flower-like constellations, adorned wonderfully with hundreds of flower-gems, and like a fifth ocean.
सर्वर्तुपुष्पैर्निचितं पादपैर्मधुगन्धिभिः ।
नानानिनादैरुद्यानं रम्यं मृगगणैर्द्विजैः ॥१३॥
13. sarvartupuṣpairnicitaṃ pādapairmadhugandhibhiḥ ,
nānāninādairudyānaṃ ramyaṃ mṛgagaṇairdvijaiḥ.
13. sarvartupuṣpaiḥ nicitam pādapaiḥ madhugandhibhiḥ
nānāninādaiḥ udyānam ramyam mṛgagaṇaiḥ dvijaiḥ

13. The delightful garden was densely covered with flowers of all seasons and by honey-fragrant trees. It resonated with various sounds from herds of deer and birds (dvijaiḥ).
अनेकगन्धप्रवहं पुण्यगन्धं मनोरमम् ।
शैलेन्द्रमिव गन्धाढ्यं द्वितीयं गन्धमादनम् ॥१४॥
14. anekagandhapravahaṃ puṇyagandhaṃ manoramam ,
śailendramiva gandhāḍhyaṃ dvitīyaṃ gandhamādanam.
14. aneka-gandha-pravaham puṇya-gandham manoramam
śailendram iva gandha-āḍhyam dvitīyam gandhamādanam

14. Carrying many fragrances, possessing auspicious scents, and charming; it was like a mighty mountain (śailendra) rich in perfumes, indeed a second Gandhamādana (gandhamādana).
अशोकवनिकायां तु तस्यां वानरपुंगवः ।
स ददर्शाविदूरस्थं चैत्यप्रासादमूर्जितम् ॥१५॥
15. aśokavanikāyāṃ tu tasyāṃ vānarapuṃgavaḥ ,
sa dadarśāvidūrasthaṃ caityaprāsādamūrjitam.
15. aśokavanikāyām tu tasyām vānara-puṅgavaḥ sa
dadarśa avidūra-stham caitya-prāsādam ūrjitam
15. tasyām aśokavanikāyām tu saḥ vānara-puṅgavaḥ

15. But in that Ashoka grove (aśokavanikā), the foremost of monkeys (vānarapuṅgava) saw, not far away, a magnificent temple-palace (caityaprāsāda).
मध्ये स्तम्भसहस्रेण स्थितं कैलासपाण्डुरम् ।
प्रवालकृतसोपानं तप्तकाञ्चनवेदिकम् ॥१६॥
16. madhye stambhasahasreṇa sthitaṃ kailāsapāṇḍuram ,
pravālakṛtasopānaṃ taptakāñcanavedikam.

16. It was situated in the center, supported by a thousand pillars, white like Mount Kailasa (kailāsa), with steps made of coral and a platform of molten gold.
मुष्णन्तमिव चक्षूंषि द्योतमानमिव श्रिया ।
विमलं प्रांशुभावत्वादुल्लिखन्तमिवाम्बरम् ॥१७॥
17. muṣṇantamiva cakṣūṃṣi dyotamānamiva śriyā ,
vimalaṃ prāṃśubhāvatvādullikhantamivāmbaram.

17. It seemed to steal (the gaze of) eyes and gleam with splendor (śrī); pure, and because of its great height, it seemed to scrape the sky.
ततो मलिनसंवीतां राक्षसीभिः समावृताम् ।
उपवासकृशां दीनां निःश्वसान्तीं पुनः पुनः ।
ददर्श शुक्लपक्षादौ चन्द्ररेखामिवामलाम् ॥१८॥
18. tato malinasaṃvītāṃ rākṣasībhiḥ samāvṛtām ,
upavāsakṛśāṃ dīnāṃ niḥśvasāntīṃ punaḥ punaḥ ,
dadarśa śuklapakṣādau candrarekhāmivāmalām.
18. tataḥ malinasaṃvītām rākṣasībhiḥ
samāvṛtām upavāsakṛśām dīnām
niḥśvasāntīm punaḥ punaḥ dadarśa

18. Then he saw her, dressed in soiled garments, surrounded by female demons, emaciated from fasting, miserable, and sighing again and again, like a spotless crescent moon at the beginning of the bright fortnight.
मन्दप्रख्यायमानेन रूपेण रुचिरप्रभाम् ।
पिनद्धां धूमजालेन शिखामिव विभावसोः ॥१९॥
19. mandaprakhyāyamānena rūpeṇa ruciraprabhām ,
pinaddhāṃ dhūmajālena śikhāmiva vibhāvasoḥ.

19. She had a beautiful radiance with a dimly visible form, enveloped by a mass of smoke, like a flame of fire.
पीतेनैकेन संवीतां क्लिष्टेनोत्तमवाससा ।
सपङ्कामनलंकारां विपद्मामिव पद्मिनीम् ॥२०॥
20. pītenaikena saṃvītāṃ kliṣṭenottamavāsasā ,
sapaṅkāmanalaṃkārāṃ vipadmāmiva padminīm.

20. She was covered by a single, worn-out, once-fine yellow garment, stained with mud, and without ornaments, like a lotus plant deprived of its lotus flowers.
व्रीडितां दुःखसंतप्तां परिम्लानां तपस्विनीम् ।
ग्रहेणाङ्गारकेणैव पीडितामिव रोहिणीम् ॥२१॥
21. vrīḍitāṃ duḥkhasaṃtaptāṃ parimlānāṃ tapasvinīm ,
graheṇāṅgārakeṇaiva pīḍitāmiva rohiṇīm.

graheṇa aṅgārakeṇa eva pīḍitām iva rohiṇīm

21. She was ashamed, tormented by sorrow, greatly withered, a suffering ascetic woman, like Rohiṇī tormented by the planet Mars (Aṅgāraka).
अश्रुपूर्णमुखीं दीनां कृशामननशेन च ।
शोकध्यानपरां दीनां नित्यं दुःखपरायणाम् ॥२२॥
22. aśrupūrṇamukhīṃ dīnāṃ kṛśāmananaśena ca ,
śokadhyānaparāṃ dīnāṃ nityaṃ duḥkhaparāyaṇām.

śokadhyānaparām dīnām nityam duḥkhaparāyaṇām

22. Her face was filled with tears, she was miserable and emaciated from not eating. Absorbed in sorrowful contemplation, constantly sad and dedicated to suffering.
प्रियं जनमपश्यन्तीं पश्यन्तीं राक्षसीगणम् ।
स्वगणेन मृगीं हीनां श्वगणाभिवृतामिव ॥२३॥
23. priyaṃ janamapaśyantīṃ paśyantīṃ rākṣasīgaṇam ,
svagaṇena mṛgīṃ hīnāṃ śvagaṇābhivṛtāmiva.
23. priyam janam apaśyantīm paśyantīm rākṣasīgaṇam
svagaṇena mṛgīm hīnām śvaghaṇābhivṛtām iva

23. Not seeing her loved ones, but instead seeing only the host of female demons, she was like a doe separated from its own herd and surrounded by a pack of dogs.
नीलनागाभया वेण्या जघनं गतयैकया ।
सुखार्हां दुःखसंतप्तां व्यसनानामकोदिवाम् ॥२४॥
24. nīlanāgābhayā veṇyā jaghanaṃ gatayaikayā ,
sukhārhāṃ duḥkhasaṃtaptāṃ vyasanānāmakodivām.

24. With a single braid, dark like a serpent, which reached down to her hips, she who deserved happiness was tormented by sorrow and constantly afflicted by misfortunes.
तां समीक्ष्य विशालाक्षीमधिकं मलिनां कृशाम् ।
तर्कयामास सीतेति कारणैरुपपादिभिः ॥२५॥
25. tāṃ samīkṣya viśālākṣīmadhikaṃ malināṃ kṛśām ,
tarkayāmāsa sīteti kāraṇairupapādibhiḥ.
25. tām samīkṣya viśālākṣīm adhikam malinām kṛśām
tarkayāmāsa sītā iti kāraṇaiḥ upapādibhiḥ
25. (Hanumān) tām viśālākṣīm adhikam malinām kṛśām samīkṣya,

sītā iti tarkayāmāsa
25. Observing her, the wide-eyed one, greatly soiled and emaciated, he inferred, "This is Sītā," based on convincing reasons.
ह्रियमाणा तदा तेन रक्षसा कामरूपिणा ।
यथारूपा हि दृष्टा वै तथारूपेयमङ्गना ॥२६॥
26. hriyamāṇā tadā tena rakṣasā kāmarūpiṇā ,
yathārūpā hi dṛṣṭā vai tathārūpeyamaṅganā.

26. Indeed, this lady, abducted at that time by that shape-shifting demon, was seen exactly as she appeared.
पूर्णचन्द्राननां सुभ्रूं चारुवृत्तपयोधराम् ।
कुर्वन्तीं प्रभया देवीं सर्वा वितिमिरा दिशः ॥२७॥
27. pūrṇacandrānanāṃ subhrūṃ cāruvṛttapayodharām ,
kurvantīṃ prabhayā devīṃ sarvā vitimirā diśaḥ.

27. A divine lady with a face like the full moon, beautiful eyebrows, and lovely rounded breasts, whose radiance dispelled the darkness from all directions.
तां नीलकेशीं बिम्बौष्ठीं सुमध्यां सुप्रतिष्ठिताम् ।
सीतां पद्मपलाशाक्षीं मन्मथस्य रतिं यथा ॥२८॥
28. tāṃ nīlakeśīṃ bimbauṣṭhīṃ sumadhyāṃ supratiṣṭhitām ,
sītāṃ padmapalāśākṣīṃ manmathasya ratiṃ yathā.

28. Sita, with her dark hair, lips like bimba fruit, a beautiful waist, well-proportioned form, and eyes like lotus petals, was like Rati, the consort of the god of love (manmatha).
इष्टां सर्वस्य जगतः पूर्णचन्द्रप्रभामिव ।
भूमौ सुतनुमासीनां नियतामिव तापसीम् ॥२९॥
29. iṣṭāṃ sarvasya jagataḥ pūrṇacandraprabhāmiva ,

29. Beloved by the entire world, like the radiance of the full moon, she was sitting on the ground, with her beautiful body, like a restrained female ascetic (tapas).
निःश्वासबहुलां भीरुं भुजगेन्द्रवधूमिव ।
शोकजालेन महता विततेन न राजतीम् ॥३०॥
30. niḥśvāsabahulāṃ bhīruṃ bhujagendravadhūmiva ,
śokajālena mahatā vitatena na rājatīm.

30. She was filled with many sighs, fearful, like the wife of the king of serpents. She did not shine, enveloped by a great, widespread net of grief.
संसक्तां धूमजालेन शिखामिव विभावसोः ।
तां स्मृतीमिव संदिग्धामृद्धिं निपतितामिव ॥३१॥
31. saṃsaktāṃ dhūmajālena śikhāmiva vibhāvasoḥ ,
tāṃ smṛtīmiva saṃdigdhāmṛddhiṃ nipatitāmiva.

31. Enveloped by a mass of smoke, she was like a flame of fire. She resembled a doubtful memory, or prosperity that had fallen.
विहतामिव च श्रद्धामाशां प्रतिहतामिव ।
सोपसर्गां यथा सिद्धिं बुद्धिं सकलुषामिव ॥३२॥
32. vihatāmiva ca śraddhāmāśāṃ pratihatāmiva ,
sopasargāṃ yathā siddhiṃ buddhiṃ sakaluṣāmiva.
32. vihatām iva ca śraddhām āśām pratihatām iva
sopasargām yathā siddhim buddhim sakaluṣām iva

32. And like faith (śraddhā) that is crushed, or hope that is thwarted. Just as accomplishment (siddhi) afflicted with obstacles, or intellect (buddhi) that is stained.
अभूतेनापवादेन कीर्तिं निपतितामिव ।
रामोपरोधव्यथितां रक्षोहरणकर्शिताम् ॥३३॥
33. abhūtenāpavādena kīrtiṃ nipatitāmiva ,
rāmoparodhavyathitāṃ rakṣoharaṇakarśitām.

33. Like fame that has fallen due to an unfounded calumny. She was distressed by Rāma's constraint and emaciated by the abduction by the demons (rakṣas).
अबलां मृगशावाक्षीं वीक्षमाणां ततस्ततः ।
बाष्पाम्बुप्रतिपूर्णेन कृष्णवक्त्राक्षिपक्ष्मणा ।
वदनेनाप्रसन्नेन निःश्वसन्तीं पुनः पुनः ॥३४॥
34. abalāṃ mṛgaśāvākṣīṃ vīkṣamāṇāṃ tatastataḥ ,
bāṣpāmbupratipūrṇena kṛṣṇavaktrākṣipakṣmaṇā ,
vadanenāprasannena niḥśvasantīṃ punaḥ punaḥ.
34. abalām mṛgaśāvākṣīm vīkṣamāṇām
tataḥ tataḥ bāṣpāmbūpratipūrṇena
kṛṣṇavaktrakṣipakṣmaṇā vadanena
aprasannena niḥśvasantīm punaḥ punaḥ

vīkṣamāṇām bāṣpāmbūpratipūrṇena

34. He saw a helpless woman with fawn-like eyes, gazing around, sighing repeatedly with an unhappy face, whose features - face, eyes, and eyelashes - were darkened and completely full of tears.
मलपङ्कधरां दीनां मण्डनार्हाममण्डिताम् ।
प्रभां नक्षत्रराजस्य कालमेघैरिवावृताम् ॥३५॥
35. malapaṅkadharāṃ dīnāṃ maṇḍanārhāmamaṇḍitām ,
prabhāṃ nakṣatrarājasya kālameghairivāvṛtām.

35. She was bearing dirt and grime, distressed, deserving of adornment yet unadorned, like the radiance of the moon (nakṣatrarāja) veiled by dark clouds.
तस्य संदिदिहे बुद्धिर्मुहुः सीतां निरीक्ष्य तु ।
आम्नायानामयोगेन विद्यां प्रशिथिलामिव ॥३६॥
36. tasya saṃdidihe buddhirmuhuḥ sītāṃ nirīkṣya tu ,
āmnāyānāmayogena vidyāṃ praśithilāmiva.

36. As he repeatedly observed Sītā, his mind became uncertain, like knowledge (vidyā) that has become neglected through the disuse of sacred texts (āmnāya).
दुःखेन बुबुधे सीतां हनुमाननलंकृताम् ।
संस्कारेण यथाहीनां वाचमर्थान्तरं गताम् ॥३७॥
37. duḥkhena bubudhe sītāṃ hanumānanalaṃkṛtām ,
saṃskāreṇa yathāhīnāṃ vācamarthāntaraṃ gatām.

37. Hanuman recognized the unadorned Sītā with great difficulty, just as one would recognize a statement that, lacking proper grammatical refinement (saṃskāra), has conveyed a distorted meaning.
तां समीक्ष्य विशालाक्षीं राजपुत्रीमनिन्दिताम् ।
तर्कयामास सीतेति कारणैरुपपादयन् ॥३८॥
38. tāṃ samīkṣya viśālākṣīṃ rājaputrīmaninditām ,
tarkayāmāsa sīteti kāraṇairupapādayan.

tarkayāmāsa sītā iti kāraṇaiḥ upapādayan

38. Supporting his conclusion with evidence, he inferred, upon seeing that wide-eyed, faultless princess, "This is Sītā."
वैदेह्या यानि चाङ्गेषु तदा रामो ऽन्वकीर्तयत् ।
तान्याभरणजालानि गात्रशोभीन्यलक्षयत् ॥३९॥
39. vaidehyā yāni cāṅgeṣu tadā rāmo'nvakīrtayat ,
tānyābharaṇajālāni gātraśobhīnyalakṣayat.
39. vaidehyā yāni ca aṅgeṣu tadā rāmaḥ anvakīrtayat
tāni ābharaṇajālāni gātraśobhīni alakṣayat

39. He (Hanumān) observed those very collections of ornaments adorning her body, which Rāma had previously described as belonging to (Vaidehī) Sītā.
सुकृतौ कर्णवेष्टौ च श्वदंष्ट्रौ च सुसंस्थितौ ।
मणिविद्रुमचित्राणि हस्तेष्वाभरणानि च ॥४०॥
40. sukṛtau karṇaveṣṭau ca śvadaṃṣṭrau ca susaṃsthitau ,
maṇividrumacitrāṇi hasteṣvābharaṇāni ca.
40. sukṛtau karṇaveṣṭau ca śvadaṃṣṭrau ca susaṃsthitau
maṇividrumacitrāṇi hasteṣu ābharaṇāni ca

40. He observed the two skillfully crafted earrings and the two well-fitted "dog-tusk" ornaments, as well as various ornaments on her hands, beautifully adorned with gems and coral.
श्यामानि चिरयुक्तत्वात्तथा संस्थानवन्ति च ।
तान्येवैतानि मन्ये ऽहं यानि रामो ऽव्नकीर्तयत् ॥४१॥
41. śyāmāni cirayuktatvāttathā saṃsthānavanti ca ,
tānyevaitāni manye'haṃ yāni rāmo'vnakīrtayat.

tāni eva etāni manye aham yāni rāmaḥ anvakīrtayat

41. These (ornaments) are darkened because they have been worn for a long time, yet they retain their original form. I believe these are indeed the very same ones that Rāma had described.
तत्र यान्यवहीनानि तान्यहं नोपलक्षये ।
यान्यस्या नावहीनानि तानीमानि न संशयः ॥४२॥
42. tatra yānyavahīnāni tānyahaṃ nopalakṣaye ,
yānyasyā nāvahīnāni tānīmāni na saṃśayaḥ.
42. tatra yāni avahīnāni tāni aham na upalakṣaye
yāni asyāḥ na avahīnāni tāni imāni na saṃśayaḥ
42. aham tatra yāni avahīnāni tāni na upalakṣaye

42. Among the items that had fallen [to the ground], I did not identify them [as hers]. But these [items I see here], which have not merely fallen off her [by accident], are undoubtedly hers.
पीतं कनकपट्टाभं स्रस्तं तद्वसनं शुभम् ।
उत्तरीयं नगासक्तं तदा दृष्टं प्लवंगमैः ॥४३॥
43. pītaṃ kanakapaṭṭābhaṃ srastaṃ tadvasanaṃ śubham ,
uttarīyaṃ nagāsaktaṃ tadā dṛṣṭaṃ plavaṃgamaiḥ.
43. pītam kanakapaṭṭābham srastam tat vasanam śubham
uttarīyam nagaāsaktam tadā dṛṣṭam plavaṅgamaiḥ
43. plavaṅgamaiḥ tadā tat śubham pītam kanakapaṭṭābham

43. That beautiful upper garment, yellow and shining like a golden cloth, which had slipped down and become attached to a tree, was then seen by the monkeys.
भूषणानि च मुख्यानि दृष्टानि धरणीतले ।
अनयैवापविद्धानि स्वनवन्ति महान्ति च ॥४४॥
44. bhūṣaṇāni ca mukhyāni dṛṣṭāni dharaṇītale ,
anayaivāpaviddhāni svanavanti mahānti ca.
44. bhūṣaṇāni ca mukhyāni dṛṣṭāni dharaṇītale
anayā eva apaviddhāni svanavanti mahānti ca

44. And major ornaments, large and making a sound [as they fell], were seen on the ground, having indeed been thrown down by her.
इदं चिरगृहीतत्वाद्वसनं क्लिष्टवत्तरम् ।
तथा हि नूनं तद्वर्णं तथा श्रीमद् यथेतरत् ॥४५॥
45. idaṃ ciragṛhītatvādvasanaṃ kliṣṭavattaram ,
tathā hi nūnaṃ tadvarṇaṃ tathā śrīmad yathetarat.
45. idam ciragṛhītatvāt vasanam kliṣṭavattaram tathā
hi nūnam tatvarṇam tathā śrīmat yathā itarat
45. idam vasanam ciragṛhītatvāt kliṣṭavattaram hi
tathā nūnam tatvarṇam tathā śrīmat yathā itarat
45. This garment is more worn out because it has been worn for a long time. For indeed, its color and splendor are surely similar to the other one.
इयं कनकवर्णाङ्गी रामस्य महिषी प्रिया ।
प्रनष्टापि सती यस्य मनसो न प्रणश्यति ॥४६॥
46. iyaṃ kanakavarṇāṅgī rāmasya mahiṣī priyā ,
pranaṣṭāpi satī yasya manaso na praṇaśyati.
46. iyam kanakavarṇāṅgī rāmasya mahiṣī priyā
pranaṣṭā api satī yasya manasaḥ na praṇaśyati

46. She, whose body is golden-hued, the beloved queen of Rama, although physically lost, does not disappear from his mind.
इयं सा यत् कृते रामश्चतुर्भिः परितप्यते ।
कारुण्येनानृशंस्येन शोकेन मदनेन च ॥४७॥
47. iyaṃ sā yat kṛte rāmaścaturbhiḥ paritapyate ,
kāruṇyenānṛśaṃsyena śokena madanena ca.
47. iyam sā yat kṛte rāmaḥ caturbhiḥ paritapyate
kāruṇyena ānṛśaṃsyena śokena madanena ca
47. iyam sā yat kṛte rāmaḥ caturbhiḥ kāruṇyena
ānṛśaṃsyena śokena madanena ca paritapyate
47. This is she, because of whom Rama suffers greatly, tormented by four emotions: compassion, kindness, sorrow, and desire.
स्त्री प्रनष्टेति कारुण्यादाश्रितेत्यानृशंस्यतः ।
पत्नी नष्टेति शोकेन प्रियेति मदनेन च ॥४८॥
48. strī pranaṣṭeti kāruṇyādāśritetyānṛśaṃsyataḥ ,
patnī naṣṭeti śokena priyeti madanena ca.
48. strī pranaṣṭā iti kāruṇyāt āśritā iti ānṛśaṃsyataḥ
patnī naṣṭā iti śokena priyā iti madanena ca
48. strī pranaṣṭā iti kāruṇyāt āśritā iti ānṛśaṃsyataḥ

48. He is moved by compassion thinking, "A woman is lost"; by kindness, remembering, "She took refuge with me"; by sorrow, lamenting, "My wife is lost"; and by desire, thinking of her as "My beloved."
अस्या देव्या यथा रूपमङ्गप्रत्यङ्गसौष्ठवम् ।
रामस्य च यथारूपं तस्येयमसितेक्षणा ॥४९॥
49. asyā devyā yathā rūpamaṅgapratyaṅgasauṣṭhavam ,
rāmasya ca yathārūpaṃ tasyeyamasitekṣaṇā.
49. asyāḥ devyāḥ yathā rūpam aṅgapratyaṅgasauṣṭhavam
rāmasya ca yathā rūpam tasya iyam asitekṣaṇā
49. yathā asyāḥ devyāḥ rūpam aṅgapratyaṅgasauṣṭhavam ca yathā rāmasya rūpam,
iyam asitekṣaṇā tasya
49. Just as the beauty and the perfect symmetry of every limb of this goddess are, and just as Rama's form is, so this dark-eyed one is truly his match.
अस्या देव्या मनस्तस्मिंस्तस्य चास्यां प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
तेनेयं स च धर्मात्मा मुहूर्तमपि जीवति ॥५०॥
50. asyā devyā manastasmiṃstasya cāsyāṃ pratiṣṭhitam ,
teneyaṃ sa ca dharmātmā muhūrtamapi jīvati.
50. asyāḥ devyāḥ manaḥ tasmin tasya ca asyām pratiṣṭhitam
tena iyam saḥ ca dharmātmā muhūrtam api jīvati
50. asyāḥ devyāḥ manaḥ tasmin tasya ca asyām pratiṣṭhitam
tena iyam saḥ ca dharmātmā muhūrtam api jīvati
50. The mind of this goddess (Sita) is fixed on him (Rama), and his (Rama's) mind is established in her. It is by this (mutual devotion) that she and that righteous soul (dharmaatma) are able to live even for a single moment.
दुष्करं कुरुते रामो य इमां मत्तकाशिनीम् ।
सीतां विना महाबाहुर्मुहूर्तमपि जीवति ॥५१॥
51. duṣkaraṃ kurute rāmo ya imāṃ mattakāśinīm ,
sītāṃ vinā mahābāhurmuhūrtamapi jīvati.
51. duṣkaram kurute rāmaḥ yaḥ imām mattakāśinīm
sītām vinā mahābāhuḥ muhūrtam api jīvati
51. duṣkaram kurute rāmaḥ yaḥ imām mattakāśinīm

51. Rama performs a difficult feat, for he, the mighty-armed one, lives even for a moment without this enchanting Sita.
एवं सीतां तदा दृष्ट्वा हृष्टः पवनसंभवः ।
जगाम मनसा रामं प्रशशंस च तं प्रभुम् ॥५२॥
52. evaṃ sītāṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭaḥ pavanasaṃbhavaḥ ,
jagāma manasā rāmaṃ praśaśaṃsa ca taṃ prabhum.
52. evam sītām tadā dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭaḥ pavanasambhavaḥ
jagāma manasā rāmam praśasaṃsa ca tam prabhum
52. evam tadā sītām dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭaḥ pavanasambhavaḥ
manasā rāmam jagāma ca tam prabhum praśasaṃsa
52. Having thus seen Sita, the delighted son of the wind (Hanuman) mentally turned to Rama and praised that lord.
