तच्छ्रुत्वा राजशार्दूल विश्वामित्रस्य भाषितम् ।
मुहूर्तमिव निःसंज्ञः संज्ञावानिदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. tacchrutvā rājaśārdūla viśvāmitrasya bhāṣitam ,
muhūrtamiva niḥsaṃjñaḥ saṃjñāvānidamabravīt.

1. rājaśārdūla,

(tataḥ) saṃjñāvān (bhūtvā) idam abravīt
1. O tiger among kings, having heard those words of Viśvāmitra, he remained as if unconscious for a moment; then, regaining his senses, he spoke these words.
ऊनषोडशवर्षो मे रामो राजीवलोचनः ।
न युद्धयोग्यतामस्य पश्यामि सह राक्षसैः ॥२॥
2. ūnaṣoḍaśavarṣo me rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ ,
na yuddhayogyatāmasya paśyāmi saha rākṣasaiḥ.
2. ūnaṣoḍaśavarṣaḥ me rāmaḥ rājīvalocanaḥ na
yuddhayogyatām asya paśyāmi saha rākṣasaiḥ
2. me rājīvalocanaḥ rāmaḥ ūnaṣoḍaśavarṣaḥ (asti).
asya yuddhayogyatām rākṣasaiḥ saha na paśyāmi
2. My Rāma, whose eyes are like lotuses, is less than sixteen years old. I do not see him as fit for battle with the Rākṣasas.
इयमक्षौहिणी पूर्णा यस्याहं पतिरीश्वरः ।
अनया संवृतो गत्वा योधाहं तैर्निशाचरैः ॥३॥
3. iyamakṣauhiṇī pūrṇā yasyāhaṃ patirīśvaraḥ ,
anayā saṃvṛto gatvā yodhāhaṃ tairniśācaraiḥ.
3. iyam akṣauhiṇī pūrṇā yasyāḥ aham patiḥ īśvaraḥ
anayā saṃvṛtaḥ gatvā yodhā aham taiḥ niśācaraiḥ
3. iyam pūrṇā akṣauhiṇī (asti),
yasyāḥ aham patiḥ īśvaraḥ (asmi).
aham anayā saṃvṛtaḥ gatvā taiḥ niśācaraiḥ (saha) yodhā (bhavāmi/yotsye)
3. This is a complete akṣauhiṇī army, of which I am the lord and master. Accompanied by this (army), I myself will go and fight those night-roaming Rākṣasas.
इमे शूराश्च विक्रान्ता भृत्या मे ऽस्त्रविशारदाः ।
योग्या रक्षोगणैर्योद्धुं न रामं नेतुमर्हसि ॥४॥
4. ime śūrāśca vikrāntā bhṛtyā me'straviśāradāḥ ,
yogyā rakṣogaṇairyoddhuṃ na rāmaṃ netumarhasi.
4. ime śūrāḥ ca vikrāntāḥ bhṛtyāḥ me astraviśāradāḥ
| yogyāḥ rakṣogaṇaiḥ yoddhum na rāmam netum arhasi
4. me ime śūrāḥ ca vikrāntāḥ astraviśāradāḥ bhṛtyāḥ
rakṣogaṇaiḥ yoddhum yogyāḥ rāmam netum na arhasi
4. These brave and valiant servants of mine are experts in weaponry. They are capable of fighting with the hosts of rākṣasas. You should not take Rama.
अहमेव धनुष्पाणिर्गोप्ता समरमूर्धनि ।
यावत् प्राणान्धरिष्यामि तावद् योत्स्ये निशाचरैः ॥५॥
5. ahameva dhanuṣpāṇirgoptā samaramūrdhani ,
yāvat prāṇāndhariṣyāmi tāvad yotsye niśācaraiḥ.
5. aham eva dhanuṣpāṇiḥ goptā samaramūrdhani |
yāvat prāṇān dhariṣyāmi tāvat yotsye niśācaraiḥ
5. aham eva dhanuṣpāṇiḥ samaramūrdhani goptā
yāvat prāṇān dhariṣyāmi tāvat niśācaraiḥ yotsye
5. I myself, bow in hand, will be the protector at the forefront of battle. As long as I retain my life-breath, so long will I fight the night-stalkers.
निर्विघ्ना व्रतचर्या सा भविष्यति सुरक्षिता ।
अहं तत्र गमिष्यामि न राम नेतुमर्हसि ॥६॥
6. nirvighnā vratacaryā sā bhaviṣyati surakṣitā ,
ahaṃ tatra gamiṣyāmi na rāma netumarhasi.
6. nirvighnā vratacaryā sā bhaviṣyati surakṣitā
| aham tatra gamiṣyāmi na rāmam netum arhasi
6. sā vratacaryā nirvighnā surakṣitā bhaviṣyati
aham tatra gamiṣyāmi rāmam netum na arhasi
6. That observance of your vows (vratacaryā) will be free from obstacles and well-protected. I myself will go there; you should not take Rama.
बालो ह्यकृतविद्यश्च न च वेत्ति बलाबलम् ।
न चास्त्रबलसंयुक्तो न च युद्धविशारदः ।
न चासौ रक्षसां योग्यः कूटयुद्धा हि ते ध्रुवम् ॥७॥
7. bālo hyakṛtavidyaśca na ca vetti balābalam ,
na cāstrabalasaṃyukto na ca yuddhaviśāradaḥ ,
na cāsau rakṣasāṃ yogyaḥ kūṭayuddhā hi te dhruvam.
7. bālaḥ hi akṛtavidyaḥ ca na ca vetti
balābalam | na ca astrabalasaṃyuktaḥ na
ca yuddhaviśāradaḥ | na ca asau
rakṣasām yogyaḥ kūṭayuddhāḥ hi te dhruvam
7. hi bālaḥ ca akṛtavidyaḥ ca balābalam
na vetti ca astrabalasaṃyuktaḥ na ca
yuddhaviśāradaḥ na ca asau rakṣasām
yogyaḥ na hi te dhruvam kūṭayuddhāḥ
7. For he is but a boy, unaccomplished in skill, and he does not understand (the enemy's) strengths and weaknesses. He is neither equipped with the power of weapons nor is he skilled in warfare. And he is not fit for (fighting) the rākṣasas, for they, indeed, are masters of deceptive warfare (kūṭayuddha).
विप्रयुक्तो हि रामेण मुहूर्तमपि नोत्सहे ।
जीवितुं मुनिशार्दूल न रामं नेतुमर्हसि ॥८॥
8. viprayukto hi rāmeṇa muhūrtamapi notsahe ,
jīvituṃ muniśārdūla na rāmaṃ netumarhasi.
8. viprayuktaḥ hi rāmeṇa muhūrtam api na utsahe
jīvitum muniśārdūla na rāmam netum arhasi
8. muniśārdūla rāmeṇa viprayuktaḥ hi (aham) muhūrtam
api jīvitum na utsahe rāmam netum na arhasi
8. Indeed, separated from Rāma, I cannot bear to live even for a moment, O tiger among sages. You should not take Rāma.
यदि वा राघवं ब्रह्मन्नेतुमिच्छसि सुव्रत ।
चतुरङ्गसमायुक्तं मया सह च तं नय ॥९॥
9. yadi vā rāghavaṃ brahmannetumicchasi suvrata ,
caturaṅgasamāyuktaṃ mayā saha ca taṃ naya.
9. yadi vā rāghavam brahman netum icchasi suvrata
catur-aṅga-samāyuktam mayā saha ca tam naya
9. brahman suvrata yadi vā rāghavam netum icchasi
tam mayā saha ca catur-aṅga-samāyuktam naya
9. Or if, O Brāhmaṇa (brahman) of good vows, you wish to take Rāma, then take him along with me and the entire four-limbed army.
षष्टिर्वर्षसहस्राणि जातस्य मम कौशिक ।
दुःखेनोत्पादितश्चायं न रामं नेतुमर्हसि ॥१०॥
10. ṣaṣṭirvarṣasahasrāṇi jātasya mama kauśika ,
duḥkhenotpāditaścāyaṃ na rāmaṃ netumarhasi.
10. ṣaṣṭiḥ varṣa-sahasrāṇi jātasya mama kauśika
duḥkheṇa utpāditaḥ ca ayam na rāmam netum arhasi
10. kauśika jātasya mama ṣaṣṭiḥ varṣa-sahasrāṇi ca
ayam duḥkheṇa utpāditaḥ rāmam netum na arhasi
10. O Kauśika, I am sixty thousand years old, and this (son, Rāma) was begotten with great difficulty. You should not take Rāma.
चतुर्णामात्मजानां हि प्रीतिः परमिका मम ।
ज्येष्ठं धर्मप्रधानं च न रामं नेतुमर्हसि ॥११॥
11. caturṇāmātmajānāṃ hi prītiḥ paramikā mama ,
jyeṣṭhaṃ dharmapradhānaṃ ca na rāmaṃ netumarhasi.
11. caturṇām ātmajānām hi prītiḥ paramikā mama
jyeṣṭham dharma-pradhānam ca na rāmam netum arhasi
11. hi caturṇām ātmajānām mama paramikā prītiḥ ca jyeṣṭham
dharma-pradhānam (rāmam) (ataḥ) rāmam netum na arhasi
11. Indeed, my supreme affection is for my four sons, especially for the eldest, who is foremost in righteousness (dharma). You should not take Rāma.
किं वीर्या राक्षसास्ते च कस्य पुत्राश्च के च ते ।
कथं प्रमाणाः के चैतान् रक्षन्ति मुनिपुंगव ॥१२॥
12. kiṃ vīryā rākṣasāste ca kasya putrāśca ke ca te ,
kathaṃ pramāṇāḥ ke caitān rakṣanti munipuṃgava.
12. kim vīryāḥ rākṣasāḥ te ca kasya putrāḥ ca ke ca te
katham pramāṇāḥ ke ca etān rakṣanti munipuṃgava
12. munipuṃgava te rākṣasāḥ kim vīryāḥ ca kasya putrāḥ
ca ke ca te katham pramāṇāḥ ca ke etān rakṣanti
12. O foremost among sages, what is the strength of those Rākṣasas? Whose sons are they, and who exactly are they? What is their size, and who protects them?
कथं च प्रतिकर्तव्यं तेषां रामेण रक्षसाम् ।
मामकैर्वा बलैर्ब्रह्मन्मया वा कूटयोधिनाम् ॥१३॥
13. kathaṃ ca pratikartavyaṃ teṣāṃ rāmeṇa rakṣasām ,
māmakairvā balairbrahmanmayā vā kūṭayodhinām.
13. katham ca pratikartavyam teṣām rāmeṇa rakṣasām
māmakaiḥ vā balaiḥ brahman mayā vā kūṭayodhinām
13. brahman ca teṣām kūṭayodhinām rakṣasām rāmeṇa vā
māmakaiḥ balaiḥ vā mayā katham pratikartavyam
13. And O Brāhmaṇa, how should those Rākṣasas, who are cunning warriors, be countered by Rāma, or by my forces, or by me?
सर्वं मे शंस भगवन् कथं तेषां मया रणे ।
स्थातव्यं दुष्टभावानां वीर्योत्सिक्ता हि राक्षसाः ॥१४॥
14. sarvaṃ me śaṃsa bhagavan kathaṃ teṣāṃ mayā raṇe ,
sthātavyaṃ duṣṭabhāvānāṃ vīryotsiktā hi rākṣasāḥ.
14. sarvam me śaṃsa bhagavan katham teṣām mayā raṇe
sthātavyam duṣṭabhāvānām vīryotsiktāḥ hi rākṣasāḥ
14. bhagavan me sarvam śaṃsa katham mayā raṇe teṣām
duṣṭabhāvānām sthātavyam hi rākṣasāḥ vīryotsiktāḥ
14. O revered one, tell me everything: how should I stand against those ill-natured Rākṣasas in battle? For the Rākṣasas are indeed overflowing with valor.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रो ऽभ्यभाषत ।
पौलस्त्यवंशप्रभवो रावणो नाम राक्षसः ॥१५॥
15. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā viśvāmitro'bhyabhāṣata ,
paulastyavaṃśaprabhavo rāvaṇo nāma rākṣasaḥ.
15. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā viśvāmitraḥ abhyabhāṣata
paulastyavaṃśaprabhavaḥ rāvaṇaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ
15. viśvāmitraḥ tasya tat vacanam śrutvā abhyabhāṣata
rāvaṇaḥ nāma paulastyavaṃśaprabhavaḥ rākṣasaḥ
15. Having heard his words, Viśvāmitra then spoke: "There is a Rākṣasa named Rāvaṇa, who originated from the lineage of Pulastya."
स ब्रह्मणा दत्तवरस्त्रैलोक्यं बाधते भृशम् ।
महाबलो महावीर्यो राक्षसैर्बहुभिर्वृतः ॥१६॥
16. sa brahmaṇā dattavarastrailokyaṃ bādhate bhṛśam ,
mahābalo mahāvīryo rākṣasairbahubhirvṛtaḥ.
16. sa brahmaṇā dattavaraḥ trailokyam bādhate bhṛśam
mahābalaḥ mahāvīryaḥ rākṣasaiḥ bahubhiḥ vṛtaḥ
16. sa brahmaṇā dattavaraḥ bhṛśam trailokyam bādhate
mahābalaḥ mahāvīryaḥ bahubhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ vṛtaḥ
16. He, having been granted a boon by Brahmā, greatly oppresses the three worlds. He is exceedingly powerful and valorous, surrounded by many demons.
श्रूयते हि महावीर्यो रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
साक्षाद्वैश्रवणभ्राता पुत्रो विश्रवसो मुनेः ॥१७॥
17. śrūyate hi mahāvīryo rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
sākṣādvaiśravaṇabhrātā putro viśravaso muneḥ.
17. śrūyate hi mahāvīryaḥ rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ
sākṣāt vaiśravaṇabhrātā putraḥ viśravasaḥ muneḥ
17. hi śrūyate mahāvīryaḥ rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ
sākṣāt vaiśravaṇabhrātā muneḥ viśravasaḥ putraḥ
17. Indeed, it is heard that Rāvaṇa, the very valorous lord of demons, is directly the brother of Vaiśravaṇa and the son of the sage Viśravas.
यदा स्वयं न यज्ञस्य विघ्नकर्ता महाबलः ।
तेन संचोदितौ तौ तु राक्षसौ सुमहा बलौ ।
मारीचश्च सुबाहुश्च यज्ञविघ्नं करिष्यतः ॥१८॥
18. yadā svayaṃ na yajñasya vighnakartā mahābalaḥ ,
tena saṃcoditau tau tu rākṣasau sumahā balau ,
mārīcaśca subāhuśca yajñavighnaṃ kariṣyataḥ.
18. yadā svayam na yajñasya vighnakartā
mahābalaḥ tena saṃcoditau tau
tu rākṣasau sumahābalau mārīcaḥ ca
subāhuḥ ca yajñavighnam kariṣyataḥ
18. yadā mahābalaḥ svayam yajñasya
vighnakartā na tena saṃcoditau
sumahābalau tau rākṣasau mārīcaḥ ca
subāhuḥ ca tu yajñavighnam kariṣyataḥ
18. When that immensely powerful being himself does not directly obstruct the Vedic ritual (yajña), then, incited by him, those two exceedingly mighty demons, Maricha and Subahu, will indeed create obstacles for the Vedic ritual (yajña).
इत्युक्तो मुनिना तेन राजोवाच मुनिं तदा ।
न हि शक्तो ऽस्मि संग्रामे स्थातुं तस्य दुरात्मनः ॥१९॥
19. ityukto muninā tena rājovāca muniṃ tadā ,
na hi śakto'smi saṃgrāme sthātuṃ tasya durātmanaḥ.
19. iti uktaḥ muninā tena rājā uvāca munim tadā na
hi śaktaḥ asmi saṅgrāme sthātum tasya durātmanaḥ
19. iti tena muninā uktaḥ rājā tadā munim uvāca hi
saṅgrāme tasya durātmanaḥ sthātum na śaktaḥ asmi
19. Thus addressed by that sage, the king then said to the sage: 'Indeed, I am not capable of standing in battle against that evil-minded one.'
स त्वं प्रसादं धर्मज्ञ कुरुष्व मम पुत्रके ।
देवदानवगन्धर्वा यक्षाः पतग पन्नगाः ॥२०॥
20. sa tvaṃ prasādaṃ dharmajña kuruṣva mama putrake ,
devadānavagandharvā yakṣāḥ pataga pannagāḥ.
20. sa tvam prasādam dharmajña kuruṣva mama putrake
devadānavagandharvāḥ yakṣāḥ pataga pannagāḥ
20. sa tvam dharmajña mama putrake prasādam kuruṣva
devadānavagandharvāḥ yakṣāḥ pataga pannagāḥ
20. Therefore, you, who understand the natural law (dharma), please show favor to my son. Gods (devas), demons (dānavas), celestial musicians (gandharvas), yakṣas, birds, and serpents...
न शक्ता रावणं सोढुं किं पुनर्मानवा युधि ।
स हि वीर्यवतां वीर्यमादत्ते युधि राक्षसः ॥२१॥
21. na śaktā rāvaṇaṃ soḍhuṃ kiṃ punarmānavā yudhi ,
sa hi vīryavatāṃ vīryamādatte yudhi rākṣasaḥ.
21. na śaktāḥ rāvaṇam soḍhum kim punaḥ mānavāḥ yudhi
sa hi vīryavatām vīryam ādatte yudhi rākṣasaḥ
21. rāvaṇam soḍhum na śaktāḥ,
kim punaḥ mānavāḥ yudhi? hi sa rākṣasaḥ yudhi vīryavatām vīryam ādatte.
21. They (gods, demons, etc.) are not able to withstand Rāvaṇa; how much less then can humans do so in battle? For that demon (rākṣasa) indeed seizes the strength of the powerful in combat.
तेन चाहं न शक्तो ऽस्मि संयोद्धुं तस्य वा बलैः ।
सबलो वा मुनिश्रेष्ठ सहितो वा ममात्मजैः ॥२२॥
22. tena cāhaṃ na śakto'smi saṃyoddhuṃ tasya vā balaiḥ ,
sabalo vā muniśreṣṭha sahito vā mamātmajaiḥ.
22. tena ca aham na śaktaḥ asmi saṃyoddhum tasya vā balaiḥ
sabalaḥ vā muniśreṣṭha sahitaḥ vā mama ātmajaiḥ
22. tena ca aham tasyabalaiḥ vā saṃyoddhum na śaktaḥ asmi,
sabalaḥ vā,
mama ātmajaiḥ sahitaḥ vā,
muniśreṣṭha.
22. Therefore, I am unable to fight with him, or with his forces, O best of sages. This is true whether I am with my full strength, or accompanied by my sons.
कथमप्यमरप्रख्यं संग्रामाणामकोविदम् ।
बालं मे तनयं ब्रह्मन्नैव दास्यामि पुत्रकम् ॥२३॥
23. kathamapyamaraprakhyaṃ saṃgrāmāṇāmakovidam ,
bālaṃ me tanayaṃ brahmannaiva dāsyāmi putrakam.
23. katham api amaraprakhyam saṃgrāmāṇāmakovidam
balam me tanayam brahman na eva dāsyāmi putrakam
23. brahman! katham api amaraprakhyam saṃgrāmāṇāmakovidam balam me tanayam putrakam na eva dāsyāmi.
23. I will certainly not give my young son, who is like a god and inexperienced in battles, O Brahmin (brahman). I will not give that child.
अथ कालोपमौ युद्धे सुतौ सुन्दोपसुन्दयोः ।
यज्ञविघ्नकरौ तौ ते नैव दास्यामि पुत्रकम् ॥२४॥
24. atha kālopamau yuddhe sutau sundopasundayoḥ ,
yajñavighnakarau tau te naiva dāsyāmi putrakam.
24. atha kālopamau yuddhe sutau sundopasundayoḥ
yajñavighnakarau tau te na eva dāsyāmi putrakam
24. atha sundopasundayoḥ sutau kālopamau yuddhe
yajñavighnakarau tau te putrakam na eva dāsyāmi
24. Indeed, the two sons of Sunda and Upasunda, who are comparable to Death (kala) in battle and obstructers of sacrifices (yajñas), - I will certainly not give my son (to you for this task).
मारीचश्च सुबाहुश्च वीर्यवन्तौ सुशिक्षितौ ।
तयोरन्यतरेणाहं योद्धा स्यां ससुहृद्गणः ॥२५॥
25. mārīcaśca subāhuśca vīryavantau suśikṣitau ,
tayoranyatareṇāhaṃ yoddhā syāṃ sasuhṛdgaṇaḥ.
25. mārīcaḥ ca subāhuḥ ca vīryavantau suśikṣitau
tayoḥ anyatareṇa aham yoddhā syām sasuhṛdgaṇaḥ
25. mārīcaḥ ca subāhuḥ ca vīryavantau suśikṣitau
aham sasuhṛdgaṇaḥ tayoḥ anyatareṇa yoddhā syām
25. Maricha and Subahu are both powerful and well-trained. I myself, along with my retinue of friends, would be a warrior (yoddhā) against one of them.
