सीतां तु रुदतीं दृष्ट्वा ये तत्र मुनिदारकाः ।
प्राद्रवन्यत्र भगवानास्ते वाल्मीकिरग्र्यधीः ॥१॥

1. Upon seeing Sītā crying, those ascetic boys (muni) ran to where the revered (bhagavān) Vālmīki, possessing supreme intellect, was residing.
अभिवाद्य मुनेः पादौ मुनिपुत्रा महर्षये ।
सर्वे निवेदयामासुस्तस्यास्तु रुदितस्वनम् ॥२॥
2. abhivādya muneḥ pādau muniputrā maharṣaye ,
sarve nivedayāmāsustasyāstu ruditasvanam.

2. Having greeted the feet of the (muni), all the sons of the ascetics (muniputrāḥ) then reported her crying sound to the great sage (maharṣi).
अदृष्टपूर्वा भगवन् कस्याप्येषा महात्मनः ।
पत्नी श्रीरिव संमोहाद्विरौति विकृतस्वरा ॥३॥
3. adṛṣṭapūrvā bhagavan kasyāpyeṣā mahātmanaḥ ,
patnī śrīriva saṃmohādvirauti vikṛtasvarā.
3. adṛṣṭapūrvā bhagavan kasyāpi eṣā mahātmanaḥ
patnī śrīḥ iva saṃmohāt virauti vikṛtasvarā
3. bhagavan adṛṣṭapūrvā eṣā kasyāpi mahātmanaḥ

3. O revered one (bhagavan), this woman, never seen before, and who is the wife of some great soul (mahātman), cries out with a distorted voice due to great delusion (saṃmoha), just like the goddess Śrī.
भगवन् साधु पश्येमां देवतामिव खाच्च्युताम् ।
न ह्येनां मानुषीं विद्मः सत्क्रियास्याः प्रयुज्यताम् ॥४॥
4. bhagavan sādhu paśyemāṃ devatāmiva khāccyutām ,
na hyenāṃ mānuṣīṃ vidmaḥ satkriyāsyāḥ prayujyatām.

hi enām mānuṣīm vidmaḥ satkriyā asyāḥ prayujyatām

4. O revered one (bhagavan), please look at her properly, as if she were a goddess fallen from the sky. Indeed, we do not consider her a human woman; let proper reverence (satkriyā) be offered to her.
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा बुद्ध्या निश्चित्य धर्मवित् ।
तपसा लब्धचक्षुष्मान्प्राद्रवद् यत्र मैथिली ॥५॥
5. teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā buddhyā niścitya dharmavit ,
tapasā labdhacakṣuṣmānprādravad yatra maithilī.
5. teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā buddhyā niścitya dharmavit
tapasā labdhacakṣuṣmān prādravat yatra maithilī
5. The knower of (dharma), having heard their words and decided with his intelligence, and having obtained spiritual sight through his asceticism (tapas), hurried to where Maithili (Sita) was.
तं तु देशमभिप्रेत्य किं चित् पद्भ्यां महामुनिः ।
अर्घ्यमादाय रुचिरं जाह्वनीतीरमाश्रितः ।
ददर्श राघवस्येष्टां पत्नीं सीतामनाथवत् ॥६॥
6. taṃ tu deśamabhipretya kiṃ cit padbhyāṃ mahāmuniḥ ,
arghyamādāya ruciraṃ jāhvanītīramāśritaḥ ,
dadarśa rāghavasyeṣṭāṃ patnīṃ sītāmanāthavat.
6. tam tu deśam abhipretya kim cit
padbhyām mahāmuniḥ arghyam ādāya ruciram
jāhvanītīram āśritaḥ dadarśa
rāghavasya iṣṭām patnīm sītām anāthavat
6. The great sage, setting out for that place, walking a short distance on foot, took a beautiful offering (arghya). Resting on the bank of the Jahnavi (Ganga), he then saw Sita, Rama's beloved wife, looking like one without a protector.
तां सीतां शोकभारार्तां वाल्मीकिर्मुनिपुंगवः ।
उवाच मधुरां वाणीं ह्लादयन्निव तेजसा ॥७॥
7. tāṃ sītāṃ śokabhārārtāṃ vālmīkirmunipuṃgavaḥ ,
uvāca madhurāṃ vāṇīṃ hlādayanniva tejasā.
7. tām sītām śokabhārārtām vālmīkiḥ munipuṅgavaḥ
uvāca madhurām vāṇīm hlādayan iva tejasā
7. Valmiki, the foremost among sages, spoke sweet words to Sita, who was afflicted by the burden of sorrow, as if gladdening her with his spiritual radiance.
स्नुषा दशरथस्य त्वं रामस्य महिषी सती ।
जनकस्य सुता राज्ञः स्वागतं ते पतिव्रते ॥८॥
8. snuṣā daśarathasya tvaṃ rāmasya mahiṣī satī ,
janakasya sutā rājñaḥ svāgataṃ te pativrate.
8. snuṣā daśarathasya tvam rāmasya mahiṣī satī
janakasya sutā rājñaḥ svāgatam te pativrate
8. You are Dasaratha's daughter-in-law, Rama's chief queen, a virtuous woman (satī), and the daughter of King Janaka. Welcome to you, O devoted wife (pativratā)!
आयान्त्येवासि विज्ञाता मया धर्मसमाधिना ।
कारणं चैव सर्वं मे हृदयेनोपलक्षितम् ॥९॥
9. āyāntyevāsi vijñātā mayā dharmasamādhinā ,
kāraṇaṃ caiva sarvaṃ me hṛdayenopalakṣitam.
9. āyāntī eva asi vijñātā mayā dharmasamādhinā
kāraṇam ca eva sarvam me hṛdayena upalakṣitam
9. āyāntī eva asi mayā dharmasamādhinā vijñātā.
ca eva sarvam kāraṇam me hṛdayena upalakṣitam.
9. You, who are approaching, are indeed known to me through my meditation rooted in natural law (dharma). And indeed, every reason for your arrival has been perceived by my heart.
अपापां वेद्मि सीते त्वां तपोलब्धेन चक्षुषा ।
विशुद्धभावा वैदेहि साम्प्रतं मयि वर्तसे ॥१०॥
10. apāpāṃ vedmi sīte tvāṃ tapolabdhena cakṣuṣā ,
viśuddhabhāvā vaidehi sāmprataṃ mayi vartase.
10. apāpām vedmi sīte tvām tapolabdhena cakṣuṣā
viśuddhabhāvā vaidehi sāmpratam mayi vartase
10. sīte,
tapasā labdhena cakṣuṣā tām apāpām (tvām) vedmi.
vaidehi,
sāmpratam tvam mayi viśuddhabhāvā vartase.
10. O Sītā, I know you to be sinless through the vision obtained by my ascetic practices (tapas). O Vaidehī, you are now of a pure disposition towards me.
आश्रमस्याविदूरे मे तापस्यस्तपसि स्थिताः ।
तास्त्वां वत्से यथा वत्सं पालयिष्यन्ति नित्यशः ॥११॥
11. āśramasyāvidūre me tāpasyastapasi sthitāḥ ,
tāstvāṃ vatse yathā vatsaṃ pālayiṣyanti nityaśaḥ.
11. āśramasya avidūre me tāpasyah tapasi sthitāḥ tāḥ
tvām vatse yathā vatsam pālayiṣyanti nityaśaḥ
11. me āśramasya avidūre tapasyaḥ tapasi sthitāḥ.
vatse,
tāḥ nityaśaḥ tvām vatsam yathā pālayiṣyanti.
11. Not far from my hermitage, ascetic women reside, engaged in spiritual austerity (tapas). My dear child, they will always protect you as a mother protects her calf.
इदमर्घ्यं प्रतीच्छ त्वं विस्रब्धा विगतज्वरा ।
यथा स्वगृहमभ्येत्य विषादं चैव मा कृथाः ॥१२॥
12. idamarghyaṃ pratīccha tvaṃ visrabdhā vigatajvarā ,
yathā svagṛhamabhyetya viṣādaṃ caiva mā kṛthāḥ.
12. idam arghyam pratīccha tvam visrabdhā vigatajvarā
yathā svagṛham abhyetya viṣādam ca eva mā kṛthāḥ
12. tvam visrabdhā vigatajvarā idam arghyam pratīccha.
yathā svagṛham abhyetya ca eva viṣādam mā kṛthāḥ.
12. Accept this offering (arghya) with trust and free from anxiety. And having come to your own home, do not feel sorrow.
श्रुत्वा तु भाषितं सीता मुनेः परममद्भुतम् ।
शिरसा वन्द्य चरणौ तथेत्याह कृताञ्जलिः ॥१३॥
13. śrutvā tu bhāṣitaṃ sītā muneḥ paramamadbhutam ,
śirasā vandya caraṇau tathetyāha kṛtāñjaliḥ.
13. śrutvā tu bhāṣitam sītā muneḥ paramam adbhutam
śirasā vandya caraṇau tathā iti āha kṛtāñjaliḥ
13. sītā muneḥ paramam adbhutam bhāṣitam śrutvā
śirasā caraṇau vandya kṛtāñjaliḥ tathā iti āha
13. Having heard the sage's (muni) exceedingly wondrous words, Sita, bowing her head at his feet, responded "So be it," with her hands folded in reverence.
तं प्रयान्तं मुनिं सीता प्राञ्जलिः पृष्ठतो ऽन्वगात् ।
अन्वयाद् यत्र तापस्यो धर्मनित्याः समाहिताः ॥१४॥
14. taṃ prayāntaṃ muniṃ sītā prāñjaliḥ pṛṣṭhato'nvagāt ,
anvayād yatra tāpasyo dharmanityāḥ samāhitāḥ.
14. tam prayāntam munim sītā prāñjaliḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ anvagāt
anvayāt yatra tāpasyaḥ dharmanityāḥ samāhitāḥ
14. sītā prāñjaliḥ tam prayāntam munim pṛṣṭhataḥ anvagāt
yatra dharmanityāḥ samāhitāḥ tāpasyaḥ anvayāt
14. Sita, with hands folded, followed the sage (muni) from behind as he departed. She followed to where the female ascetics, steadfast in their spiritual constitution (dharma), were absorbed in contemplation.
तं दृष्ट्वा मुनिमायान्तं वैदेह्यानुगतं तदा ।
उपाजग्मुर्मुदा युक्ता वचनं चेदमब्रुवन् ॥१५॥
15. taṃ dṛṣṭvā munimāyāntaṃ vaidehyānugataṃ tadā ,
upājagmurmudā yuktā vacanaṃ cedamabruvan.
15. tam dṛṣṭvā munim āyāntam vaidehyā anugatam tadā
upājagmuḥ mudā yuktāḥ vacanam ca idam abruvan
15. tadā tam vaidehyā anugatam āyāntam munim dṛṣṭvā
mudā yuktāḥ upājagmuḥ ca idam vacanam abruvan
15. Then, seeing that the sage (muni) was approaching, accompanied by Vaidehi (Sita), they, filled with joy, drew near and spoke these words.
स्वागतं ते मुनिश्रेष्ठ चिरस्यागमनं प्रभो ।
अभिवादयामः सर्वास्त्वामुच्यतां किं च कुर्महे ॥१६॥
16. svāgataṃ te muniśreṣṭha cirasyāgamanaṃ prabho ,
abhivādayāmaḥ sarvāstvāmucyatāṃ kiṃ ca kurmahe.
16. svāgatam te muniśreṣṭha cirasya āgamanam prabho
abhivādayāmaḥ sarvāḥ tvām ucyatām kim ca kurmahe
16. muniśreṣṭha prabho te svāgatam cirasya āgamanam
sarvāḥ tvām abhivādayāmaḥ ca kim ucyatām kurmahe
16. "Welcome to you, O best of sages (muni)! Your arrival, O lord, is after a long time. All of us salute you. Please tell us what we can do for you."
तासां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वाल्मीकिरिदमब्रवीत् ।
सीतेयं समनुप्राप्ता पत्नी रामस्य धीमतः ॥१७॥
17. tāsāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā vālmīkiridamabravīt ,
sīteyaṃ samanuprāptā patnī rāmasya dhīmataḥ.
17. tāsām tat vacanam śrutvā vālmīkiḥ idam abravīt
| sītā iyam samanuprāptā patnī rāmasya dhīmataḥ
17. vālmīkiḥ tāsām tat vacanam śrutvā idam abravīt
iyam sītā dhīmataḥ rāmasya patnī samanuprāptā
17. Having heard their words, Vālmīki spoke this: "This is Sītā, the wife of the wise Rāma, who has arrived here."
स्नुषा दशरथस्यैषा जनकस्य सुता सती ।
अपापा पतिना त्यक्ता परिपाल्या मया सदा ॥१८॥
18. snuṣā daśarathasyaiṣā janakasya sutā satī ,
apāpā patinā tyaktā paripālyā mayā sadā.
18. snuṣā daśarathasya eṣā janakasya sutā satī
| apāpā patinā tyaktā paripālyā mayā sadā
18. eṣā snuṣā daśarathasya janakasya satī sutā
apāpā patinā tyaktā mayā sadā paripālyā
18. She is the daughter-in-law of Daśaratha and the virtuous daughter of Janaka. Though innocent and abandoned by her husband, she must always be protected by me.
इमां भवत्यः पश्यन्तु स्नेहेन परमेण ह ।
गौरवान्मम वाक्यस्य पूज्या वो ऽस्तु विशेषतः ॥१९॥
19. imāṃ bhavatyaḥ paśyantu snehena parameṇa ha ,
gauravānmama vākyasya pūjyā vo'stu viśeṣataḥ.
19. imām bhavatyaḥ paśyantu snehena parameṇa ha |
gauravāt mama vākyasya pūjyā vaḥ astu viśeṣataḥ
19. bhavatyaḥ imām parameṇa snehena ha paśyantu
mama vākyasya gauravāt vaḥ viśeṣataḥ pūjyā astu
19. You ladies should look upon her with the greatest affection. Indeed, due to the reverence for my words, let her be especially worthy of your honor.
मुहुर्मुहुश्च वैदेहीं परिसान्त्व्य महायशाः ।
स्वमाश्रमं शिष्यवृतः पुनरायान्महातपाः ॥२०॥
20. muhurmuhuśca vaidehīṃ parisāntvya mahāyaśāḥ ,
svamāśramaṃ śiṣyavṛtaḥ punarāyānmahātapāḥ.
20. muhurmuhuḥ ca vaidehīm parisāntvya mahāyaśāḥ
| svam āśramam śiṣyavṛtaḥ punaḥ āyāt mahātapāḥ
20. māhayasāḥ mahātapāḥ muhurmuhuḥ ca vaidehīm
parisāntvya śiṣyavṛtaḥ svam āśramam punaḥ āyāt
20. The greatly renowned sage (Vālmīki), possessing great austerity (tapas), having repeatedly comforted Vaidehī, returned to his own hermitage, surrounded by his disciples.
