तथोक्तवति रामे तु भरते च महात्मनि ।
लक्ष्मणो ऽपि शुभं वाक्यमुवाच रघुनन्दनम् ॥१॥
1. tathoktavati rāme tu bharate ca mahātmani ,

1. When Rama and the noble (mahātman) Bharata had thus spoken, Lakshmana also addressed auspicious words to Rama, the delight of the Raghu dynasty (raghunandana).
अश्वमेधो महायज्ञः पावनः सर्वपाप्मनाम् ।
पावनस्तव दुर्धर्षो रोचतां क्रतुपुंगवः ॥२॥
2. aśvamedho mahāyajñaḥ pāvanaḥ sarvapāpmanām ,
pāvanastava durdharṣo rocatāṃ kratupuṃgavaḥ.

2. The Ashwamedha is a great (yajña), a purifier of all sins. May this formidable, supreme ritual (kratupuṃgava) be pleasing to you.
श्रूयते हि पुरावृत्तं वासवे सुमहात्मनि ।
ब्रह्महत्यावृतः शक्रो हयमेधेन पावितः ॥३॥
3. śrūyate hi purāvṛttaṃ vāsave sumahātmani ,
brahmahatyāvṛtaḥ śakro hayamedhena pāvitaḥ.

3. Indeed, an ancient tale is narrated concerning the very noble (mahātman) Vasava (Indra): Shakra, afflicted by the sin of brahmin-killing (brahmahatyā), was purified by a horse ritual.
पुरा किल महाबाहो देवासुरसमागमे ।
वृत्रो नाम महानासीद्दैतेयो लोकसंमतः ॥४॥
4. purā kila mahābāho devāsurasamāgame ,
vṛtro nāma mahānāsīddaiteyo lokasaṃmataḥ.

4. O mighty-armed one, formerly, in a conflict between devas and asuras, there was a great daitya named Vṛtra, who was esteemed by the people.
विस्तीर्णा योजनशतमुच्छ्रितस्त्रिगुणं ततः ।
अनुरागेण लोकांस्त्रीन् स्नेहात् पश्यति सर्वतः ॥५॥
5. vistīrṇā yojanaśatamucchritastriguṇaṃ tataḥ ,
anurāgeṇa lokāṃstrīn snehāt paśyati sarvataḥ.
5. vistīrṇā yojanaśatam ucchritaḥ triguṇam tataḥ
| anurāgeṇa lokān trīn snehāt paśyati sarvataḥ
5. yojanaśatam vistīrṇā tataḥ triguṇam ucchritaḥ
anurāgeṇa snehāt sarvataḥ trīn lokān paśyati
5. He was a hundred yojanas in breadth and three times that in height. He would look upon the three worlds with affection and love from every direction.
धर्मज्ञश्च कृतज्ञश्च बुद्ध्या च परिनिष्ठितः ।
शशास पृथिवीं सर्वां धर्मेण सुसमाहितः ॥६॥
6. dharmajñaśca kṛtajñaśca buddhyā ca pariniṣṭhitaḥ ,
śaśāsa pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ dharmeṇa susamāhitaḥ.
6. dharmajñaḥ ca kṛtajñaḥ ca buddhyā ca pariniṣṭhitaḥ
| śaśāsa pṛthivīm sarvām dharmeṇa susamāhitaḥ
6. dharmajñaḥ ca kṛtajñaḥ ca buddhyā ca pariniṣṭhitaḥ
dharmeṇa susamāhitaḥ sarvām pṛthivīm śaśāsa
6. He was knowledgeable of (natural) law (dharma), grateful, and perfectly established in intellect. He ruled the entire earth with (natural) law (dharma) and great composure.
तस्मिन्प्रशासति तदा सर्वकामदुघा मही ।
रसवन्ति प्रसूतानि मूलानि च फलानि च ॥७॥
7. tasminpraśāsati tadā sarvakāmadughā mahī ,
rasavanti prasūtāni mūlāni ca phalāni ca.
7. tasmin praśāsati tadā sarvakāmadughā mahī
| rasavanti prasūtāni mūlāni ca phalāni ca
7. tasmin tadā praśāsati mahī sarvakāmadughā
rasavanti mūlāni ca phalāni ca prasūtāni
7. When he was ruling then, the earth (mahī) yielded all desired things. Roots and fruits, full of juice, were abundantly produced.
अकृष्टपच्या पृथिवी सुसंपन्ना महात्मनः ।
स राज्यं तादृशं भुङ्क्ते स्फीतमद्भुतदर्शनम् ॥८॥
8. akṛṣṭapacyā pṛthivī susaṃpannā mahātmanaḥ ,
sa rājyaṃ tādṛśaṃ bhuṅkte sphītamadbhutadarśanam.
8. akṛṣṭapacyā pṛthivī susaṃpannā mahātmanaḥ saḥ
rājyam tādṛśam bhuṅkte sphītam adbhutadarśanam
8. saḥ mahātmanaḥ akṛṣṭapacyā susaṃpannā pṛthivī
tādṛśam sphītam adbhutadarśanam rājyam bhuṅkte
8. For the great-souled one, the earth yielded produce without cultivation and was exceedingly prosperous. He enjoyed such an extensive kingdom, magnificent to behold.
तस्य बुद्धिः समुत्पन्ना तपः कुर्यामनुत्तमम् ।
तपो हि परमं श्रेयस्तपो हि परमं सुखम् ॥९॥
9. tasya buddhiḥ samutpannā tapaḥ kuryāmanuttamam ,
tapo hi paramaṃ śreyastapo hi paramaṃ sukham.
9. tasya buddhiḥ samutpannā tapaḥ kuryām anuttamam
tapaḥ hi paramam śreyaḥ tapaḥ hi paramam sukham
9. tasya buddhiḥ samutpannā anuttamam tapaḥ kuryām
hi tapaḥ paramam śreyaḥ hi tapaḥ paramam sukham
9. An idea arose in him: 'I should undertake supreme austerity (tapas).' For austerity (tapas) is indeed the ultimate welfare, and austerity (tapas) is indeed the supreme happiness.
स निक्षिप्य सुतं ज्येष्ठं पौरेषु परमेश्वरम् ।
तप उग्रमुपातिष्ठत्तापयन् सर्वदेवताः ॥१०॥
10. sa nikṣipya sutaṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ paureṣu parameśvaram ,
tapa ugramupātiṣṭhattāpayan sarvadevatāḥ.
10. saḥ nikṣipya sutam jyeṣṭham paureṣu parameśvaram
tapaḥ ugram upātiṣṭhat tāpayan sarvadevatāḥ
10. saḥ jyeṣṭham sutam parameśvaram paureṣu nikṣipya
ugram tapaḥ upātiṣṭhat sarvadevatāḥ tāpayan
10. He, having entrusted his eldest son as the supreme lord to the citizens, then undertook severe austerity (tapas), causing all the deities to suffer.
तपस्तप्यति वृत्रे तु वासवः परमार्तवत् ।
विष्णुं समुपसंक्रम्य वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥११॥
11. tapastapyati vṛtre tu vāsavaḥ paramārtavat ,
viṣṇuṃ samupasaṃkramya vākyametaduvāca ha.
11. tapaḥ tapyati vṛtre tu vāsavaḥ paramārtavat
viṣṇum samupasaṃkramya vākyam etat uvāca ha
11. vṛtre tapaḥ tapyati tu vāsavaḥ paramārtavat
viṣṇum samupasaṃkramya etat vākyam ha uvāca
11. When Vṛtra was engaged in severe austerity (tapas), Indra, like one in extreme distress, approached Viṣṇu (Viṣṇu) and spoke these words.
तपस्यता महाबाहो लोका वृत्रेण निर्जिताः ।
बलवान् स हि धर्मात्मा नैनं शक्ष्यामि बाधितुम् ॥१२॥
12. tapasyatā mahābāho lokā vṛtreṇa nirjitāḥ ,
balavān sa hi dharmātmā nainaṃ śakṣyāmi bādhitum.
12. tapasyaṭā mahābāho lokā vṛtreṇa nirjitāḥ |
balavān sa hi dharmātmā na enam śakṣyāmi bādhitum
12. mahābāho,
tapasyaṭā vṛtreṇa lokā nirjitāḥ saḥ hi dharmātmā balavān asti,
enam bādhitum na śakṣyāmi
12. O mighty-armed one, the worlds have been conquered by Vṛtra, who is engaged in (severe) austerity (tapas). Indeed, he is powerful and possesses a righteous nature (dharma); I will not be able to obstruct him.
यद्यसौ तप आतिष्ठेद्भूय एव सुरेश्वर ।
यावल् लोका धरिष्यन्ति तावदस्य वशानुगाः ॥१३॥
13. yadyasau tapa ātiṣṭhedbhūya eva sureśvara ,
yāval lokā dhariṣyanti tāvadasya vaśānugāḥ.
13. yadi asau tapas ātiṣṭhet bhūyaḥ eva sureśvara
| yāvat lokā dhariṣyanti tāvat asya vaśānugāḥ
13. sureśvara,
yadi asau bhūyaḥ eva tapas ātiṣṭhet,
yāvat lokā dhariṣyanti,
tāvat asya vaśānugāḥ (bhaviṣyanti)
13. O lord of the gods, if he were again to undertake (severe) austerity (tapas), then as long as the worlds endure, they would remain subservient to him.
त्वं चैनं परमोदारमुपेक्षसि महाबल ।
क्षणं हि न भवेद्वृत्रः क्रुद्धे त्वयि सुरेश्वर ॥१४॥
14. tvaṃ cainaṃ paramodāramupekṣasi mahābala ,
kṣaṇaṃ hi na bhavedvṛtraḥ kruddhe tvayi sureśvara.
14. tvam ca enam parama-udāram upekṣasi mahābala |
kṣaṇam hi na bhavet vṛtraḥ kruddhe tvayi sureśvara
14. mahābala,
sureśvara,
tvam ca enam parama-udāram upekṣasi tvayi kruddhe (sati),
vṛtraḥ hi kṣaṇam na bhavet
14. And you, O mighty one, O lord of the gods, disregard this extremely noble one! Indeed, if you were angered, Vṛtra would not exist for even a moment.
यदा हि प्रीतिसंयोगं त्वया विष्णो समागतः ।
तदा प्रभृति लोकानां नाथत्वमुपलब्धवान् ॥१५॥
15. yadā hi prītisaṃyogaṃ tvayā viṣṇo samāgataḥ ,
tadā prabhṛti lokānāṃ nāthatvamupalabdhavān.
15. yadā hi prīti-saṃyogam tvayā viṣṇo samāgataḥ
| tadā prabhṛti lokānām nāthatvam upalabdhavān
15. viṣṇo,
yadā hi tvayā prīti-saṃyogam samāgataḥ,
tadā prabhṛti lokānām nāthatvam upalabdhavān
15. O Viṣṇu, since he attained a union of affection with you, from that time onwards, he has achieved lordship over the worlds.
स त्वं प्रसादं लोकानां कुरुष्व सुमहायशः ।
त्वत्कृतेन हि सर्वं स्यात् प्रशान्तमजरं जगत् ॥१६॥
16. sa tvaṃ prasādaṃ lokānāṃ kuruṣva sumahāyaśaḥ ,
tvatkṛtena hi sarvaṃ syāt praśāntamajaraṃ jagat.
16. sa tvam prasādam lokānām kuruṣva sumahāyaśaḥ
tvatkṛtena hi sarvam syāt praśāntam ajaram jagat
16. sumahāyaśaḥ tvam sa lokānām prasādam kuruṣva hi
tvatkṛtena sarvam jagat praśāntam ajaram syāt
16. O greatly famous one, please show favor to the worlds. For by your action, the entire world would become peaceful and free from decay.
इमे हि सर्वे विष्णो त्वां निरीक्षन्ते दिवौकसः ।
वृत्रघतेन महता एषां साह्यं कुरुष्व ह ॥१७॥
17. ime hi sarve viṣṇo tvāṃ nirīkṣante divaukasaḥ ,
vṛtraghatena mahatā eṣāṃ sāhyaṃ kuruṣva ha.
17. ime hi sarve viṣṇo tvām nirīkṣante divaukasaḥ
vṛtraghatena mahatā eṣām sāhyam kuruṣva ha
17. hi viṣṇo ime sarve divaukasaḥ tvām nirīkṣante
mahatā vṛtraghatena eṣām sāhyam ha kuruṣva
17. Indeed, all these celestial beings, O Viṣṇu, are looking to you. By the great slaying of Vṛtra, please grant them assistance.
त्वया हि नित्यशः साह्यं कृतमेषां महात्मनाम् ।
असह्यमिदमन्येषामगतीनां गतिर्भवान् ॥१८॥
18. tvayā hi nityaśaḥ sāhyaṃ kṛtameṣāṃ mahātmanām ,
asahyamidamanyeṣāmagatīnāṃ gatirbhavān.
18. tvayā hi nityaśaḥ sāhyam kṛtam eṣām mahātmanām
asahyam idam anyeṣām agatīnām gatiḥ bhavān
18. hi tvayā nityaśaḥ eṣām mahātmanām sāhyam kṛtam
idam anyeṣām asahyam bhavān agatīnām gatiḥ
18. Indeed, you have always rendered assistance to these great souls. This (situation) is unbearable for others; you are the refuge for those who are without recourse.
