पुरा राम महाबाहो महाबलपराक्रम ।
रूपमासीन्ममाचिन्त्यं त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम् ।
यथा सोमस्य शक्रस्य सूर्यस्य च यथा वपुः ॥१॥
1. purā rāma mahābāho mahābalaparākrama ,
rūpamāsīnmamācintyaṃ triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam ,

1. O Rāma, mighty-armed and mighty in strength and valor, my form was formerly inconceivable and renowned throughout the three worlds, just like the radiant forms of Soma (the Moon), Śakra (Indra), and Sūrya (the Sun).
सो ऽहं रूपमिदं कृत्वा लोकवित्रासनं महत् ।
ऋषीन् वनगतान् राम त्रासयामि ततस्ततः ॥२॥
2. so'haṃ rūpamidaṃ kṛtvā lokavitrāsanaṃ mahat ,
ṛṣīn vanagatān rāma trāsayāmi tatastataḥ.
2. saḥ aham rūpam idam kṛtvā lokavitrāsanam mahat
ṛṣīn vanagatān rāma trāsayāmi tataḥ tataḥ
2. rāma saḥ aham idam mahat lokavitrāsanam rūpam
kṛtvā vanagatān ṛṣīn tataḥ tataḥ trāsayāmi
2. Having assumed this great form, which terrorizes the worlds, I (the speaker), O Rāma, used to frighten the sages dwelling in the forest, moving from place to place.
ततः स्थूलशिरा नाम महर्षिः कोपितो मया ।
संचिन्वन् विविधं वन्यं रूपेणानेन धर्षितः ॥३॥
3. tataḥ sthūlaśirā nāma maharṣiḥ kopito mayā ,
saṃcinvan vividhaṃ vanyaṃ rūpeṇānena dharṣitaḥ.
3. tataḥ sthūlaśirā nāma maharṣiḥ kopitaḥ mayā
saṃcinvan vividham vanyam rūpeṇa anena dharṣitaḥ

3. Then, the great sage named Sthūlaśiras was angered by me because, while he was gathering various kinds of forest produce, he was assailed by this (my present) form.
तेनाहमुक्तः प्रेक्ष्यैवं घोरशापाभिधायिना ।
एतदेव नृशंसं ते रूपमस्तु विगर्हितम् ॥४॥
4. tenāhamuktaḥ prekṣyaivaṃ ghoraśāpābhidhāyinā ,
etadeva nṛśaṃsaṃ te rūpamastu vigarhitam.
4. tena aham uktaḥ prekṣya evam ghoraśāpābhidhāyinā
| etat eva nṛśaṃsam te rūpam astu vigarhitam
4. ghoraśāpābhidhāyinā tena evam prekṣya aham
uktaḥ te etat nṛśaṃsam vigarhitam rūpam eva astu
4. Having seen me in this state, he who pronounced a terrible curse, said to me: "May this very cruel and despised form be yours!"
स मया याचितः क्रुद्धः शापस्यान्तो भवेदिति ।
अभिशापकृतस्येति तेनेदं भाषितं वचः ॥५॥
5. sa mayā yācitaḥ kruddhaḥ śāpasyānto bhavediti ,
abhiśāpakṛtasyeti tenedaṃ bhāṣitaṃ vacaḥ.
5. sa mayā yācitaḥ kruddhaḥ śāpasya antaḥ bhavet iti
| abhiśāpakṛtasya iti tena idam bhāṣitam vacaḥ
5. kruddhaḥ sa mayā "śāpasya antaḥ bhavet" iti yācitaḥ
abhiśāpakṛtasya iti tena idam vacaḥ bhāṣitam
5. He, being angry, was implored by me, saying, "May there be an end to the curse!" And thus, regarding that inflicted curse, this speech was uttered by him.
यदा छित्त्वा भुजौ रामस्त्वां दहेद्विजने वने ।
तदा त्वं प्राप्स्यसे रूपं स्वमेव विपुलं शुभम् ॥६॥
6. yadā chittvā bhujau rāmastvāṃ dahedvijane vane ,
tadā tvaṃ prāpsyase rūpaṃ svameva vipulaṃ śubham.
6. yadā chittvā bhujau rāmaḥ tvām dahet vijane vane |
tadā tvam prāpsyase rūpam svam eva vipulam śubham
6. yadā rāmaḥ bhujau chittvā tvām vijane vane dahet,
tadā tvam svam eva vipulam śubham rūpam prāpsyase
6. When Rama, having severed your two arms, burns you in a solitary forest, then you will regain your own vast and auspicious form.
श्रिया विराजितं पुत्रं दनोस्त्वं विद्धि लक्ष्मण ।
इन्द्रकोपादिदं रूपं प्राप्तमेवं रणाजिरे ॥७॥
7. śriyā virājitaṃ putraṃ danostvaṃ viddhi lakṣmaṇa ,
indrakopādidaṃ rūpaṃ prāptamevaṃ raṇājire.
7. śriyā virājitam putram danoḥ tvam viddhi lakṣmaṇa
| indrakopāt idam rūpam prāptam evam raṇājire
7. lakṣmaṇa,
tvam śriyā विराजितम् दनोः पुत्रम् विद्धि इन्द्रकोपात् इदम् रूपम् एवम् रणाजिरे प्राप्तम्
7. Know, Lakshmana, that you are the son of Danu, adorned with splendor. This form was obtained in the battlefield in this manner due to Indra's wrath.
अहं हि तपसोग्रेण पितामहमतोषयम् ।
दीर्घमायुः स मे प्रादात्ततो मां विभ्रमो ऽस्पृशत् ॥८॥
8. ahaṃ hi tapasogreṇa pitāmahamatoṣayam ,
dīrghamāyuḥ sa me prādāttato māṃ vibhramo'spṛśat.
8. aham hi tapasā ugreṇa pitāmaham atoṣayam dīrgham
āyuḥ saḥ me prādāt tataḥ mām vibhramaḥ aspṛśat
8. aham hi ugreṇa tapasā pitāmaham atoṣayam saḥ me
dīrgham āyuḥ prādāt tataḥ vibhramaḥ mām aspṛśat
8. Indeed, I pleased the grandfather (Brahma) with severe austerity (tapas). He granted me a long life. Subsequently, a great delusion seized me.
दीर्घमायुर्मया प्राप्तं किं मे शक्रः करिष्यति ।
इत्येवं बुद्धिमास्थाय रणे शक्रमधर्षयम् ॥९॥
9. dīrghamāyurmayā prāptaṃ kiṃ me śakraḥ kariṣyati ,
ityevaṃ buddhimāsthāya raṇe śakramadharṣayam.
9. dīrgham āyuḥ mayā prāptam kim me śakraḥ kariṣyati
iti evam buddhim āsthāya raṇe śakram adharṣayam
9. mayā dīrgham āyuḥ prāptam śakraḥ me kim kariṣyati
iti evam buddhim āsthāya raṇe śakram adharṣayam
9. Having obtained a long life, I thought, 'What can Indra do to me?' Adopting this frame of mind, I challenged Indra in battle.
तस्य बाहुप्रमुक्तेन वज्रेण शतपर्वणा ।
सक्थिनी च शिरश्चैव शरीरे संप्रवेशितम् ॥१०॥
10. tasya bāhupramuktena vajreṇa śataparvaṇā ,
sakthinī ca śiraścaiva śarīre saṃpraveśitam.
10. tasya bāhupramuktena vajreṇa śataparvaṇā
sakthinī ca śiraḥ ca eva śarīre sampraveśitam
10. tasya bāhupramuktena śataparvaṇā vajreṇa
sakthinī ca śiraḥ ca eva śarīre sampraveśitam
10. By his (Indra's) arm-released thunderbolt (vajra), which had a hundred sharp edges, both my thighs and my head were driven deep into my body.
स मया याच्यमानः सन्नानयद् यमसादनम् ।
पितामहवचः सत्यं तदस्त्विति ममाब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. sa mayā yācyamānaḥ sannānayad yamasādanam ,
pitāmahavacaḥ satyaṃ tadastviti mamābravīt.
11. saḥ mayā yācyamānaḥ san na ānayat yamasādanam
pitāmahavacaḥ satyam tat astu iti mama abravīt
11. saḥ mayā yācyamānaḥ san na yamasādanam ānayat (saḥ)
mama abravīt tat pitāmahavacaḥ satyam astu iti
11. Even when I implored him, he did not send me to the abode of Yama. Instead, he said to me, 'Let the word of the grandfather (Brahma) be true.'
अनाहारः कथं शक्तो भग्नसक्थिशिरोमुखः ।
वज्रेणाभिहतः कालं सुदीर्घमपि जीवितुम् ॥१२॥
12. anāhāraḥ kathaṃ śakto bhagnasakthiśiromukhaḥ ,
vajreṇābhihataḥ kālaṃ sudīrghamapi jīvitum.
12. anāhāraḥ katham śaktaḥ bhagnasakthiśiromukhaḥ
vajreṇa abhihataḥ kālam sudīrgham api jīvitum
12. anāhāraḥ bhagnasakthiśiromukhaḥ vajreṇa abhihataḥ
katham sudīrgham api kālam jīvitum śaktaḥ
12. How could someone, deprived of food, with broken thighs, head, and face, and struck by the thunderbolt, possibly survive for even a very long period?
एवमुक्तस्तु मे शक्रो बाहू योजनमायतौ ।
प्रादादास्यं च मे कुक्षौ तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रमकल्पयत् ॥१३॥
13. evamuktastu me śakro bāhū yojanamāyatau ,
prādādāsyaṃ ca me kukṣau tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭramakalpayat.
13. evam uktaḥ tu me śakraḥ bāhū yojanam āyatau prādāt
āsyam ca me kukṣau tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭram akalpayat
13. evam uktaḥ tu me śakraḥ yojanam āyatau bāhū prādāt
ca me kukṣau tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭram āsyam akalpayat
13. When I spoke thus to him, Indra then gave me two arms that were a *yojana* long, and he also fashioned a mouth with sharp fangs within my belly.
सो ऽहं भुजाभ्यां दीर्घाभ्यां समाकृष्य वनेचरान् ।
सिंहद्विपमृगव्याघ्रान्भक्षयामि समन्ततः ॥१४॥
14. so'haṃ bhujābhyāṃ dīrghābhyāṃ samākṛṣya vanecarān ,
siṃhadvipamṛgavyāghrānbhakṣayāmi samantataḥ.
14. saḥ aham bhujābhyām dīrghābhyām samākṛṣya vanecarān
siṃhadvipamṛgavyāghrān bhakṣayāmi samantataḥ
14. saḥ aham dīrghābhyām bhujābhyām vanecarān
siṃhadvipamṛgavyāghrān samākṛṣya samantataḥ bhakṣayāmi
14. So, with these two long arms, I drag forest-dwellers - lions, elephants, deer, and tigers - towards me and devour them from all sides.
स तु मामब्रवीदिन्द्रो यदा रामः सलक्ष्मणः ।
छेत्स्यते समरे बाहू तदा स्वर्गं गमिष्यसि ॥१५॥
15. sa tu māmabravīdindro yadā rāmaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ ,
chetsyate samare bāhū tadā svargaṃ gamiṣyasi.
15. saḥ tu mām abravīt indraḥ yadā rāmaḥ sa-lakṣmaṇaḥ
chetsyate samare bāhū tadā svargam gamiṣyasi
15. saḥ indraḥ tu mām abravīt yadā sa-lakṣmaṇaḥ rāmaḥ
samare bāhū chetsyate tadā svargam gamiṣyasi
15. But that Indra told me, "When Rāma, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, cuts off your arms in battle, then you will ascend to heaven."
स त्वं रामो ऽसि भद्रं ते नाहमन्येन राघव ।
शक्यो हन्तुं यथातत्त्वमेवमुक्तं महर्षिणा ॥१६॥
16. sa tvaṃ rāmo'si bhadraṃ te nāhamanyena rāghava ,
śakyo hantuṃ yathātattvamevamuktaṃ maharṣiṇā.
16. sa tvam rāmaḥ asi bhadram te na aham anyena rāghava
śakyaḥ hantum yathātattvam evam uktam maharṣiṇā
16. rāghava saḥ tvam rāmaḥ asi te bhadram aham anyena
hantum na śakyaḥ maharṣiṇā yathātattvam evam uktam
16. You are that Rama; may good fortune be upon you. O Raghava, I cannot be slain by anyone else. This truth was indeed declared by the great sage.
अहं हि मतिसाचिव्यं करिष्यामि नरर्षभ ।
मित्रं चैवोपदेक्ष्यामि युवाभ्यां संस्कृतो ऽग्निना ॥१७॥
17. ahaṃ hi matisācivyaṃ kariṣyāmi nararṣabha ,
mitraṃ caivopadekṣyāmi yuvābhyāṃ saṃskṛto'gninā.
17. aham hi matisācivyam kariṣyāmi nararṣabha mitram
ca eva upadekṣyāmi yuvābhyām saṃskṛtaḥ agninā
17. nararṣabha aham hi matisācivyam kariṣyāmi ca eva
yuvābhyām mitram upadekṣyāmi agninā saṃskṛtaḥ
17. Indeed, O best of men, I will provide counsel and advise both of you as a friend, having been purified by fire.
एवमुक्तस्तु धर्मात्मा दनुना तेन राघवः ।
इदं जगाद वचनं लक्ष्मणस्योपशृण्वतः ॥१८॥
18. evamuktastu dharmātmā danunā tena rāghavaḥ ,
idaṃ jagāda vacanaṃ lakṣmaṇasyopaśṛṇvataḥ.
18. evam uktaḥ tu dharmātmā danunā tena rāghavaḥ
idam jagāda vacanam lakṣmaṇasya upaśṛṇvataḥ
18. tena danunā evam uktaḥ tu dharmātmā rāghavaḥ
lakṣmaṇasya upaśṛṇvataḥ idam vacanam jagāda
18. Thus addressed by that Danu, the righteous-souled (dharmātman) Raghava spoke these words while Lakshmana was listening.
रावणेन हृता सीता मम भार्या यशस्विनी ।
निष्क्रान्तस्य जनस्थानात् सह भ्रात्रा यथासुखम् ॥१९॥
19. rāvaṇena hṛtā sītā mama bhāryā yaśasvinī ,
niṣkrāntasya janasthānāt saha bhrātrā yathāsukham.
19. rāvaṇena hṛtā sītā mama bhāryā yaśasvinī
niṣkrāntasya janasthānāt saha bhrātrā yathāsukham
19. mama yaśasvinī bhāryā sītā rāvaṇena hṛtā bhrātrā
saha yathāsukham janasthānāt niṣkrāntasya
19. Sita, my glorious wife, was abducted by Ravana when I had departed from Janasthana, comfortably accompanied by my brother.
नाममात्रं तु जानामि न रूपं तस्य रक्षसः ।
निवासं वा प्रभावं वा वयं तस्य न विद्महे ॥२०॥
20. nāmamātraṃ tu jānāmi na rūpaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ ,
nivāsaṃ vā prabhāvaṃ vā vayaṃ tasya na vidmahe.
20. nāmamātram tu jānāmi na rūpam tasya rakṣasaḥ
nivāsam vā prabhāvam vā vayam tasya na vidmahe
20. vayam tu tasya rakṣasaḥ nāmamātram jānāmi rūpam na,
nivāsam vā prabhāvam vā na vidmahe
20. We only know the name of that demon, but not his form, nor do we know his dwelling or his power.
शोकार्तानामनाथानामेवं विपरिधावताम् ।
कारुण्यं सदृशं कर्तुमुपकारे च वर्तताम् ॥२१॥
21. śokārtānāmanāthānāmevaṃ viparidhāvatām ,
kāruṇyaṃ sadṛśaṃ kartumupakāre ca vartatām.
21. śokārtānām anāthānām evam viparidhāvatām
kāruṇyam sadṛśam kartum upakāre ca vartatām
21. śokārtānām anāthānām evam viparidhāvatām
kāruṇyam kartum ca upakāre vartatām sadṛśam
21. It is appropriate to show compassion to those afflicted by sorrow, who are helpless, and who wander about in such a manner; and one should engage in helping them.
काष्ठान्यानीय शुष्काणि काले भग्नानि कुञ्जरैः ।
भक्ष्यामस्त्वां वयं वीर श्वभ्रे महति कल्पिते ॥२२॥
22. kāṣṭhānyānīya śuṣkāṇi kāle bhagnāni kuñjaraiḥ ,
bhakṣyāmastvāṃ vayaṃ vīra śvabhre mahati kalpite.
22. kāṣṭhāni ānīya śuṣkāṇi kāle bhagnāni kuñjaraiḥ
bhakṣyāmaḥ tvām vayam vīra śvabhre mahati kalpite
22. vīra vayam kāle kuñjaraiḥ bhagnāni śuṣkāṇi kāṣṭhāni
ānīya mahati kalpite śvabhre tvām bhakṣyāmaḥ
22. O hero, after bringing dry firewood, which was broken by elephants in due time, we shall eat you in a great, prepared pit.
स त्वं सीतां समाचक्ष्व येन वा यत्र वा हृता ।
कुरु कल्याणमत्यर्थं यदि जानासि तत्त्वतः ॥२३॥
23. sa tvaṃ sītāṃ samācakṣva yena vā yatra vā hṛtā ,
kuru kalyāṇamatyarthaṃ yadi jānāsi tattvataḥ.
23. saḥ tvam sītām samācakṣva yena vā yatra vā hṛtā
kuru kalyāṇam atyartham yadi jānāsi tattvataḥ
23. saḥ tvam sītām yena vā yatra vā hṛtā (iti) samācakṣva.
yadi tattvataḥ jānāsi,
atyartham kalyāṇam kuru.
23. You, therefore, tell us about Sītā - by whom or where she was abducted. Perform this great welfare if you truly know the truth (tattva).
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण वाक्यं दनुरनुत्तमम् ।
प्रोवाच कुशलो वक्तुं वक्तारमपि राघवम् ॥२४॥
24. evamuktastu rāmeṇa vākyaṃ danuranuttamam ,
provāca kuśalo vaktuṃ vaktāramapi rāghavam.
24. evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa vākyam danuḥ anuttamam
provāca kuśalaḥ vaktum vaktāram api rāghavam
24. rāmeṇa evam uktaḥ tu kuśalaḥ danuḥ vaktāram
api rāghavam anuttamam vākyam vaktum provāca
24. Thus addressed by Rama, Danu, being skilled in speech, spoke excellent words to Rāghava, who was himself a speaker.
दिव्यमस्ति न मे ज्ञानं नाभिजानामि मैथिलीम् ।
यस्तां ज्ञास्यति तं वक्ष्ये दग्धः स्वं रूपमास्थितः ॥२५॥
25. divyamasti na me jñānaṃ nābhijānāmi maithilīm ,
yastāṃ jñāsyati taṃ vakṣye dagdhaḥ svaṃ rūpamāsthitaḥ.
25. divyam asti na me jñānam na abhijānāmi maithilīm yaḥ
tām jñāsyati tam vakṣye dagdhaḥ svam rūpam āsthitaḥ
25. me divyam jñānam na asti maithilīm na abhijānāmi yaḥ
tām jñāsyati tam vakṣye dagdhaḥ svam rūpam āsthitaḥ
25. I do not possess divine knowledge, nor do I know Maithilī. I will tell you who knows her, once I am burned and have regained my own (true) form.
अदग्धस्य हि विज्ञातुं शक्तिरस्ति न मे प्रभो ।
राक्षसं तं महावीर्यं सीता येन हृता तव ॥२६॥
26. adagdhasya hi vijñātuṃ śaktirasti na me prabho ,
rākṣasaṃ taṃ mahāvīryaṃ sītā yena hṛtā tava.
26. adagdhasya hi vijñātum śaktiḥ asti na me prabho
rākṣasam tam mahāvīryam sītā yena hṛtā tava
26. prabho adagdhasya me hi śaktiḥ na asti vijñātum
yena tava sītā hṛtā tam mahāvīryam rākṣasam
26. Indeed, O Lord (prabho), while I am unburnt, I do not have the power (śakti) to know that exceedingly powerful demon (rākṣasa) by whom your Sītā was abducted.
विज्ञानं हि महद्भ्रष्टं शापदोषेण राघव ।
स्वकृतेन मया प्राप्तं रूपं लोकविगर्हितम् ॥२७॥
27. vijñānaṃ hi mahadbhraṣṭaṃ śāpadoṣeṇa rāghava ,
svakṛtena mayā prāptaṃ rūpaṃ lokavigarhitam.
27. vijñānam hi mahat bhraṣṭam śāpadoṣeṇa rāghava
svakṛtena mayā prāptam rūpam lokavigarhitam
27. rāghava hi mahat vijñānam śāpadoṣeṇa bhraṣṭam
svakṛtena mayā lokavigarhitam rūpam prāptam
27. Indeed, my great knowledge was lost due to the fault of a curse, O Rāghava. It was through my own actions (karma) that I obtained this form, despised by the world.
किं तु यावन्न यात्यस्तं सविता श्रान्तवाहनः ।
तावन्मामवटे क्षिप्त्वा दह राम यथाविधि ॥२८॥
28. kiṃ tu yāvanna yātyastaṃ savitā śrāntavāhanaḥ ,
tāvanmāmavaṭe kṣiptvā daha rāma yathāvidhi.
28. kim tu yāvat na yāti astam savitā śrāntavāhanaḥ
tāvat mām avaṭe kṣiptvā daha rāma yathāvidhi
28. rāma kim tu śrāntavāhanaḥ savitā yāvat astam na
yāti tāvat mām avaṭe kṣiptvā yathāvidhi daha
28. But, O Rama, before the sun, whose steeds are weary, sets, cast me into a pit and cremate me according to the prescribed ritual.
दग्धस्त्वयाहमवटे न्यायेन रघुनन्दन ।
वक्ष्यामि तमहं वीर यस्तं ज्ञास्यति राक्षसं ॥२९॥
29. dagdhastvayāhamavaṭe nyāyena raghunandana ,
vakṣyāmi tamahaṃ vīra yastaṃ jñāsyati rākṣasaṃ.
29. dagdhaḥ tvayā aham avaṭe nyāyena raghunandana
vakṣyāmi tam aham vīra yaḥ tam jñāsyati rākṣasam
29. raghunandana avaṭe nyāyena tvayā aham dagdhaḥ
vīra aham tam vakṣyāmi yaḥ tam rākṣasam jñāsyati
29. O scion of Raghu, after I am justly cremated by you in a pit, I will, O hero, tell you about that person who will know about that demon.
तेन सख्यं च कर्तव्यं न्याय्यवृत्तेन राघव ।
कल्पयिष्यति ते प्रीतः साहाय्यं लघुविक्रमः ॥३०॥
30. tena sakhyaṃ ca kartavyaṃ nyāyyavṛttena rāghava ,
kalpayiṣyati te prītaḥ sāhāyyaṃ laghuvikramaḥ.
30. tena sakhyam ca kartavyam nyāyyavṛttena rāghava
kalpayiṣyati te prītaḥ sāhāyyam laghuvikramaḥ
30. rāghava nyāyyavṛttena tena ca sakhyam kartavyam
prītaḥ laghuvikramaḥ te sāhāyyam kalpayiṣyati
30. And, O scion of Raghu, friendship should be formed with him, who is righteous in his conduct. Pleased, he, the one of swift valor, will provide assistance to you.
न हि तस्यास्त्यविज्ञातं त्रिषु लोकेषु राघव ।
सर्वान्परिसृतो लोकान्पुरा वै कारणान्तरे ॥३१॥
31. na hi tasyāstyavijñātaṃ triṣu lokeṣu rāghava ,
sarvānparisṛto lokānpurā vai kāraṇāntare.
31. na hi tasya asti avijñātam triṣu lokeṣu rāghava
sarvān parisṛtaḥ lokān purā vai kāraṇāntare
31. rāghava hi tasya triṣu lokeṣu avijñātam na asti
vai purā kāraṇāntare sarvān lokān saḥ parisṛtaḥ
31. Indeed, O scion of Raghu, nothing in the three worlds remains unknown to him, for he has certainly traveled through all the worlds in the past for various reasons.
