1. rāmasya tu vacaḥ śrutvā muniveṣadharaṃ ca tam ,

And having heard Rama's words and seen him wearing the garb of an ascetic, the king, along with his wives, lost consciousness.
नैनं दुःखेन संतप्तः प्रत्यवैक्षत राघवम् ।
न चैनमभिसंप्रेक्ष्य प्रत्यभाषत दुर्मनाः ॥२॥

2. nainaṃ duḥkhena saṃtaptaḥ pratyavaikṣata rāghavam ,

Afflicted by sorrow, he could not look upon Rama; nor, being distraught, could he speak to him in reply after having observed him intently.
स मुहूर्तमिवासंज्ञो दुःखितश्च महीपतिः ।
विललाप महाबाहू राममेवानुचिन्तयन् ॥३॥

3. sa muhūrtamivāsaṃjño duḥkhitaśca mahīpatiḥ ,

For a moment, the king, the great-armed one, was as if unconscious and distressed; he lamented, constantly thinking only of Rama.

प्राणिनो हिंसिता वापि तस्मादिदमुपस्थितम् ॥४॥

I believe that surely in the past I must have caused many creatures to be separated from their young, or perhaps I even harmed living beings; therefore, this has come to pass.
न त्वेवानागते काले देहाच्च्यवति जीवितम् ।
कैकेय्या क्लिश्यमानस्य मृत्युर्मम न विद्यते ॥५॥

Indeed, life (jīvitam) does not depart from the body before its appointed time (kāla) has arrived. Yet, for me, who am being tormented by Kaikeyī, death itself is nowhere to be found.
यो ऽहं पावकसंकाशं पश्यामि पुरतः स्थितम् ।
विहाय वसने सूक्ष्मे तापसाच्छादमात्मजम् ॥६॥

I, who behold my son (ātmaja) standing before me, radiant as fire, having discarded his fine clothes and now wearing the simple covering of an ascetic...
एकस्याः खलु कैकेय्याः कृते ऽयं क्लिश्यते जनः ।
स्वार्थे प्रयतमानायाः संश्रित्य निकृतिं त्विमाम् ॥७॥

Indeed, for the sake of one Kaikeyī, this populace (jana) is tormented, for she, striving for her own self-interest (svārtha), has resorted to this very deceit (nikṛti).
एवमुक्त्वा तु वचनं बाष्पेण पिहितेक्ष्णह ।
रामेति सकृदेवोक्त्वा व्याहर्तुं न शशाक ह ॥८॥

Having thus spoken these words, with his eyes covered by tears, he was unable to utter anything more, only managing to say 'Rāma' just once.
संज्ञां तु प्रतिलभ्यैव मुहूर्तात् स महीपतिः ।
नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां सुमन्त्रमिदमब्रवीत् ॥९॥

Having just regained consciousness, that king, in a moment, spoke this to Sumantra with his eyes full of tears.
औपवाह्यं रथं युक्त्वा त्वमायाहि हयोत्तमैः ।
प्रापयैनं महाभागमितो जनपदात् परम् ॥१०॥

10. aupavāhyaṃ rathaṃ yuktvā tvamāyāhi hayottamaiḥ ,

Yoke the riding-chariot with excellent horses and come! Then, send this greatly fortunate one (Rama) from here, beyond this kingdom.
एवं मन्ये गुणवतां गुणानां फलमुच्यते ।
पित्रा मात्रा च यत् साधुर्वीरो निर्वास्यते वनम् ॥११॥

11. evaṃ manye guṇavatāṃ guṇānāṃ phalamucyate ,

I believe that this is the result (phalam) of the good qualities of those possessing virtues: that a noble hero is banished to the forest by his father and mother.
राज्ञो वचनमाज्ञाय सुमन्त्रः शीघ्रविक्रमः ।

Understanding the king's command, Sumantra, who was swift in action, yoked the chariot, which was adorned with horses, and came there.
तं रथं राजपुत्राय सूतः कनकभूषितम् ।
आचचक्षे ऽञ्जलिं कृत्वा युक्तं परमवाजिभिः ॥१३॥

13. taṃ rathaṃ rājaputrāya sūtaḥ kanakabhūṣitam ,

The charioteer, having made a gesture of reverence (añjali), showed the prince that chariot, which was adorned with gold and yoked with excellent horses.
राजा सत्वरमाहूय व्यापृतं वित्तसंचये ।
उवाच देशकालज्ञो निश्चितं सर्वतः शुचि ॥१४॥

14. rājā satvaramāhūya vyāpṛtaṃ vittasaṃcaye ,

The king, having quickly summoned his treasurer who was engaged in accumulating wealth (vittasañcaya), spoke. This treasurer was discerning of the right place and time, resolute, and in all respects honest.
वासांसि च महार्हाणि भूषणानि वराणि च ।
वर्षाण्येतानि संख्याय वैदेह्याः क्षिप्रमानय ॥१५॥

15. vāsāṃsi ca mahārhāṇi bhūṣaṇāni varāṇi ca ,

15.
Quickly bring valuable garments and excellent ornaments for Vaidehī (Sītā), having calculated for these (many) years.
नरेन्द्रेणैवमुक्तस्तु गत्वा कोशगृहं ततः ।
प्रायच्छत् सर्वमाहृत्य सीतायै क्षिप्रमेव तत् ॥१६॥

16.
Having been thus addressed by the king, he then went to the treasury, and quickly bringing all of it, he gave it to Sītā.
सा सुजाता सुजातानि वैदेही प्रस्थिता वनम् ।
भूषयामास गात्राणि तैर्विचित्रैर्विभूषणैः ॥१७॥

17.
That noble lady, Vaidehī, who was setting out for the forest, adorned her well-formed limbs with those various wondrous ornaments.
व्यराजयत वैदेही वेश्म तत् सुविभूषिता ।
उद्यतो ऽंशुमतः काले खं प्रभेव विवस्वतः ॥१८॥

The well-adorned Vaidehī illumined that palace, just as the light of the sun (Vivasvat) illuminates the sky at the time of its rising.
तां भुजाभ्यां परिष्वज्य श्वश्रूर्वचनमब्रवीत् ।
अनाचरन्तीं कृपणं मूध्न्युपाघ्राय मैथिलीम् ॥१९॥

Her mother-in-law, having embraced Maithilī with both arms and having smelled her head (kissed her forehead) – as she was not acting piteously – spoke these words.
असत्यः सर्वलोके ऽस्मिन् सततं सत्कृताः प्रियैः ।
भर्तारं नानुमन्यन्ते विनिपातगतं स्त्रियः ॥२०॥

20. asatyaḥ sarvaloke'smin satataṃ satkṛtāḥ priyaiḥ ,

20.
In this entire world, women who are always respected by their beloved ones, yet do not approve of their husband when he has fallen into misfortune, are untrue (to their natural law (dharma)).
स त्वया नावमन्तव्यः पुत्रः प्रव्राजितो मम ।
तव दैवतमस्त्वेष निर्धनः सधनो ऽपि वा ॥२१॥

21. sa tvayā nāvamantavyaḥ putraḥ pravrājito mama ,
tava daivatamastveṣa nirdhanaḥ sadhano'pi vā.

My son, though exiled, should not be disrespected by you. Let this son be your deity, whether he is without wealth or with wealth.
विज्ञाय वचनं सीता तस्या धर्मार्थसंहितम् ।
कृताञ्जलिरुवाचेदं श्वश्रूमभिमुखे स्थिता ॥२२॥

Having understood her mother-in-law's speech, which was imbued with righteousness (dharma) and purpose, Sita, standing before her with folded hands, spoke these words.
करिष्ये सर्वमेवाहमार्या यदनुशास्ति माम् ।
अभिज्ञास्मि यथा भर्तुर्वर्तितव्यं श्रुतं च मे ॥२३॥

23. kariṣye sarvamevāhamāryā yadanuśāsti mām ,
abhijñāsmi yathā bharturvartitavyaṃ śrutaṃ ca me.

O venerable lady, I will indeed do everything you instruct me. I am well aware of how one should behave towards one's husband, and I have learned it.
न मामसज्जनेनार्या समानयितुमर्हति ।

O venerable lady, you should not equate me with an ignoble person. I am unable to deviate from my intrinsic nature (dharma), just as radiance cannot separate from the moon.
नातन्त्री वाद्यते वीणा नाचक्रो वर्तते रथः ।
नापतिः सुखमेधते या स्यादपि शतात्मजा ॥२५॥

A lute cannot be played without strings. A chariot does not move without wheels. Similarly, a woman, even one with a hundred children, does not prosper happily without a husband.

Indeed, a father gives a limited amount, a mother gives a limited amount, and a son gives a limited amount. But who would not honor a husband, the giver of boundless (support/wealth)?
साहमेवंगता श्रेष्ठा श्रुतधर्मपरावरा ।
आर्ये किमवमन्येयं स्त्रीणां भर्ता हि दैवतम् ॥२७॥

(Sītā speaking) "Though I am thus situated, O noble lady, and am considered excellent, having heard about the higher and lower aspects of natural law (dharma), why should I disrespect (my husband)? For indeed, a husband is a deity for women."

Having heard Sītā's heartfelt words, Kausalyā, whose inner being (sattva) was pure, suddenly shed tears born of both sorrow and joy.
तां प्राञ्जलिरभिक्रम्य मातृमध्ये ऽतिसत्कृताम् ।
रामः परमधर्मज्ञो मातरं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२९॥

Rama, who knew the highest natural law (dharma), approached his highly honored mother, who was amidst the other mothers, with folded hands and spoke these words to her.
अम्ब मा दुःखिता भूस्त्वं पश्य त्वं पितरं मम ।
क्षयो हि वनवासस्य क्षिप्रमेव भविष्यति ॥३०॥
क्षयो हि वनवासस्य क्षिप्रमेव भविष्यति ॥३०॥
30. amba mā duḥkhitā bhūstvaṃ paśya tvaṃ pitaraṃ mama ,
kṣayo hi vanavāsasya kṣiprameva bhaviṣyati.

O mother, do not be distressed. Look at my father. For, the period of forest exile will indeed end quickly.
सुप्तायास्ते गमिष्यन्ति नववर्षाणि पञ्च च ।
सा समग्रमिह प्राप्तं मां द्रक्ष्यसि सुहृद्वृतम् ॥३१॥

31. suptāyāste gamiṣyanti navavarṣāṇi pañca ca ,

While you are sleeping, fourteen years will pass for you. Then, you will see me returned here completely, surrounded by friends.
एतावदभिनीतार्थमुक्त्वा स जननीं वचः ।
त्रयः शतशतार्धा हि ददर्शावेक्ष्य मातरः ॥३२॥

Having spoken these words of such profound meaning to his mother, he then looked and saw three hundred and fifty mothers.
ताश्चापि स तथैवार्ता मातॄर्दशरथात्मजः ।
धर्मयुक्तमिदं वाक्यं निजगाद कृताञ्जलिः ॥३३॥

saḥ daśarathātmajaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ tathā eva ārtāḥ

33.
And to those mothers, who were distressed in the same way, the son of Daśaratha, with joined hands, spoke these words consistent with natural law (dharma).
संवासात् परुषं किं चिदज्ञानाद्वापि यत् कृतम् ।
तन्मे समनुजानीत सर्वाश्चामन्त्रयामि वः ॥३४॥

34. saṃvāsāt paruṣaṃ kiṃ cidajñānādvāpi yat kṛtam ,

Whatever harshness may have been done by me due to living together or out of ignorance, please forgive me for that. And I bid farewell to all of you.

Then, as Rāghava was speaking these words, a great clamor, like the cries of female curlews, arose from the wives of the lord of men.
मुरजपणवमेघघोषवद्दशरथवेश्म बभूव यत् पुरा ।
विलपित परिदेवनाकुलं व्यसनगतं तदभूत् सुदुःखितम् ॥३६॥

That palace of Daśaratha, which formerly resonated like the roar of drums, kettledrums, and thunderclouds, subsequently became overwhelmed with weeping and lamentation, utterly sorrowful, having fallen into misfortune.
