ततो निपतितां तारां च्युतां तारामिवाम्बरात् ।
शनैराश्वासयामास हनूमान् हरियूथपः ॥१॥
1. tato nipatitāṃ tārāṃ cyutāṃ tārāmivāmbarāt ,
śanairāśvāsayāmāsa hanūmān hariyūthapaḥ.

1. Thereupon, Hanuman, the chief of the monkey army, slowly consoled Tara, who had fallen like a star dropped from the sky.
गुणदोषकृतं जन्तुः स्वकर्मफलहेतुकम् ।
अव्यग्रस्तदवाप्नोति सर्वं प्रेत्य शुभाशुभम् ॥२॥
2. guṇadoṣakṛtaṃ jantuḥ svakarmaphalahetukam ,
avyagrastadavāpnoti sarvaṃ pretya śubhāśubham.
2. guṇadoṣakṛtam jantuḥ svakarmaphalahetukam
avyagraḥ tat avāpnoti sarvam pretya śubhāśubham
2. jantuḥ pretya guṇadoṣakṛtam svakarmaphalahetukam
śubhāśubham sarvam avyagraḥ tat avāpnoti
2. A living being, after death, calmly obtains all consequences, both good and bad, which are caused by their virtues and faults, and are the result of their own actions (karma).
शोच्या शोचसि कं शोच्यं दीनं दीनानुकम्पसे ।
कश्च कस्यानुशोच्यो ऽस्ति देहे ऽस्मिन्बुद्बुदोपमे ॥३॥
3. śocyā śocasi kaṃ śocyaṃ dīnaṃ dīnānukampase ,
kaśca kasyānuśocyo'sti dehe'sminbudbudopame.
3. śocyā śocasi kam śocyam dīnam dīnam anukampase
kaḥ ca kasya anuśocyaḥ asti dehe asmin budbudopame
3. [he] śocyā [tvam] kam śocyam śocasi? dīnam [tvam] dīnam anukampase.
asmin budbudopame dehe kaḥ ca kasya anuśocyaḥ asti?
3. O pitiable one, for whom do you grieve? Who is truly lamentable? You show compassion for the miserable. Who, indeed, should be grieved for by whom, in this body that is transient like a bubble?
अङ्गदस्तु कुमारो ऽयं द्रष्टव्यो जीवपुत्रया ।
आयत्या च विधेयानि समर्थान्यस्य चिन्तय ॥४॥
4. aṅgadastu kumāro'yaṃ draṣṭavyo jīvaputrayā ,
āyatyā ca vidheyāni samarthānyasya cintaya.
4. aṅgadaḥ tu kumāraḥ ayam draṣṭavyaḥ jīvaputrayā
| āyatyā ca vidheyāni samarthāni asya cintaya
4. ayam kumāraḥ aṅgadaḥ tu jīvaputrayā draṣṭavyaḥ
ca āyatyā asya samarthāni vidheyāni cintaya
4. This prince Angada should be regarded by a mother as her own living son. And consider what appropriate measures should be taken for him in the future.
जानास्यनियतामेवं भूतानामागतिं गतिम् ।
तस्माच्छुभं हि कर्तव्यं पण्डिते नैहलौकिकम् ॥५॥
5. jānāsyaniyatāmevaṃ bhūtānāmāgatiṃ gatim ,
tasmācchubhaṃ hi kartavyaṃ paṇḍite naihalaukikam.
5. jānāsi aniyatām evam bhūtānām āgatim gatim |
tasmāt śubham hi kartavyam paṇḍitena iha laukikam
5. tvam evam bhūtānām aniyatām āgatim gatim jānāsi
tasmāt hi paṇḍitena iha laukikam śubham kartavyam
5. You know the uncertain nature of the arrival and departure of all beings. Therefore, a wise person should indeed perform virtuous actions (karma) in this world.
यस्मिन् हरिसहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च ।
वर्तयन्ति कृतांशानि सो ऽयं दिष्टान्तमागतः ॥६॥
6. yasmin harisahasrāṇi prayutānyarbudāni ca ,
vartayanti kṛtāṃśāni so'yaṃ diṣṭāntamāgataḥ.
6. yasmin harisahastrāṇi prayutāni arbudāni ca |
vartayanti kṛtāṃśāni saḥ ayam diṣṭāntam āgataḥ
6. yasmin harisahastrāṇi prayutāni arbudāni ca kṛtāṃśāni vartayanti,
saḥ ayam diṣṭāntam āgataḥ
6. He, under whom thousands, millions, and tens of millions of monkeys served, having fulfilled their respective duties, has now reached the end of his destiny (death).
यदयं न्यायदृष्टार्थः सामदानक्षमापरः ।
गतो धर्मजितां भूमिं नैनं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥७॥
7. yadayaṃ nyāyadṛṣṭārthaḥ sāmadānakṣamāparaḥ ,
gato dharmajitāṃ bhūmiṃ nainaṃ śocitumarhasi.
7. yat ayam nyāyadṛṣṭārthaḥ sāmadānakṣamāparaḥ |
gataḥ dharmajitām bhūmim na enam śocitum arhasi
7. yat ayam nyāyadṛṣṭārthaḥ sāmadānakṣamāparaḥ gataḥ dharmajitām bhūmim,
na enam śocitum arhasi
7. Because he, whose aims were aligned with justice and who was devoted to conciliation, charity, and forgiveness, has gone to the realm of those who have triumphed through natural law (dharma), you ought not to grieve for him.
सर्वे च हरिशार्दूल पुत्रश्चायं तवाङ्गदः ।
हर्यृष्कपतिराज्यं च त्वत्सनाथमनिन्दिते ॥८॥
8. sarve ca hariśārdūla putraścāyaṃ tavāṅgadaḥ ,
haryṛṣkapatirājyaṃ ca tvatsanāthamanindite.
8. sarve ca hariśārdūla putraḥ ca ayam tava aṅgadaḥ
hariṛkṣapatirājyam ca tvatsanātham anindite
8. O anindite,
sarve ca hariśārdūla putraḥ ayam ca tava aṅgadaḥ ca hariṛkṣapatirājyam tvatsanātham.
8. O blameless one, all these [people], and this son of yours, Angada - a tiger among monkeys - and the kingdom of the monkeys and bears, are now under your protection.
ताविमौ शोकसंतप्तौ शनैः प्रेरय भामिनि ।
त्वया परिगृहीतो ऽयमङ्गदः शास्तु मेदिनीम् ॥९॥
9. tāvimau śokasaṃtaptau śanaiḥ preraya bhāmini ,
tvayā parigṛhīto'yamaṅgadaḥ śāstu medinīm.
9. tau imau śokasaṃtaptau śanaiḥ preraya bhāmini
tvayā parigṛhītaḥ ayam aṅgadaḥ śāstu medinīm
9. O bhāmini,
śanaiḥ preraya tau imau śokasaṃtaptau.
tvayā parigṛhītaḥ ayam aṅgadaḥ medinīm śāstu.
9. O passionate one, gently inspire these two who are tormented by grief. Let this Angada, accepted by you, rule the land.
संततिश्च यथादृष्टा कृत्यं यच्चापि साम्प्रतम् ।
राज्ञस्तत् क्रियतां सर्वमेष कालस्य निश्चयः ॥१०॥
10. saṃtatiśca yathādṛṣṭā kṛtyaṃ yaccāpi sāmpratam ,
rājñastat kriyatāṃ sarvameṣa kālasya niścayaḥ.
10. saṃtatiḥ ca yathādṛṣṭā kṛtyam yat ca api sāmpratam
rājñaḥ tat kriyatām sarvam eṣaḥ kālasya niścayaḥ
10. ca yathādṛṣṭā saṃtatiḥ,
ca api sāmpratam yat kṛtyam,
rājñaḥ tat sarvam kriyatām.
eṣaḥ kālasya niścayaḥ.
10. Let the continuation of the lineage be established as custom dictates, and let all the current duties for the king (Vālin) be performed. This is the inevitable decree of time.
संस्कार्यो हरिराजस्तु अङ्गदश्चाभिषिच्यताम् ।
सिंहासनगतं पुत्रं पश्यन्ती शान्तिमेष्यसि ॥११॥
11. saṃskāryo harirājastu aṅgadaścābhiṣicyatām ,
siṃhāsanagataṃ putraṃ paśyantī śāntimeṣyasi.
11. saṃskāryaḥ harirājaḥ tu aṅgadaḥ ca abhiṣicyatām
siṃhāsagatam putram paśyantī śāntim eṣyasi
11. tu harirājaḥ saṃskāryaḥ,
ca aṅgadaḥ abhiṣicyatām.
putram siṃhāsagatam paśyantī śāntim eṣyasi.
11. The king of the monkeys (Vālin) must be purified by appropriate rites (saṃskāra), and Angada must be consecrated. Seeing your son seated on the throne, you will attain peace.
सा तस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा भर्तृव्यसनपीडिता ।
अब्रवीदुत्तरं तारा हनूमन्तमवस्थितम् ॥१२॥
12. sā tasya vacanaṃ śrutvā bhartṛvyasanapīḍitā ,
abravīduttaraṃ tārā hanūmantamavasthitam.
12. sā tasya vacanam śrutvā bhartṛvyasanapīḍitā
abravīt uttaram tārā hanūmantam avasthitam
12. bhartṛvyasanapīḍitā sā tārā tasya vacanam
śrutvā avasthitam hanūmantam uttaram abravīt
12. She, Tara, distressed by the calamity of her husband, hearing his words, spoke in reply to Hanumān, who was standing there.
अङ्गद प्रतिरूपाणां पुत्राणामेकतः शतम् ।
हतस्याप्यस्य वीरस्य गात्रसंश्लेषणं वरम् ॥१३॥
13. aṅgada pratirūpāṇāṃ putrāṇāmekataḥ śatam ,
hatasyāpyasya vīrasya gātrasaṃśleṣaṇaṃ varam.
13. aṅgada pratirūpāṇām putrāṇām ekataḥ śatam
hatasya api asya vīrasya gātrasaṃśleṣaṇam varam
13. aṅgada pratirūpāṇām putrāṇām ekataḥ śatam [na asti].
hatasya api asya vīrasya gātrasaṃśleṣaṇam varam [asti].
13. Even a hundred sons who are exactly like Aṅgada are not as valuable; the embrace of this slain hero's body is superior.
न चाहं हरिराजस्य प्रभवाम्यङ्गदस्य वा ।
पितृव्यस्तस्य सुग्रीवः सर्वकार्येष्वनन्तरः ॥१४॥
14. na cāhaṃ harirājasya prabhavāmyaṅgadasya vā ,
pitṛvyastasya sugrīvaḥ sarvakāryeṣvanantaraḥ.
14. na ca aham harirājasya prabhavāmi aṅgadasya vā
pitṛvyaḥ tasya sugrīvaḥ sarvakāryeṣu anantaraḥ
14. ca aham harirājasya aṅgadasya vā na prabhavāmi.
tasya pitṛvyaḥ sugrīvaḥ sarvakāryeṣu anantaraḥ.
14. And I am not the mistress of the king of monkeys, nor of Aṅgada. His paternal uncle, Sugrīva, is next in authority for all affairs.
न ह्येषा बुद्धिरास्थेया हनूमन्नङ्गदं प्रति ।
पिता हि बन्धुः पुत्रस्य न माता हरिसत्तम ॥१५॥
15. na hyeṣā buddhirāstheyā hanūmannaṅgadaṃ prati ,
pitā hi bandhuḥ putrasya na mātā harisattama.
15. na hi eṣā buddhiḥ āstheya hanūman aṅgadam prati
pitā hi bandhuḥ putrasya na mātā harisattama
15. hanūman harisattama,
eṣā buddhiḥ aṅgadam prati hi na āstheya.
hi pitā putrasya bandhuḥ,
na mātā.
15. Indeed, Hanumān, this idea should not be adopted regarding Aṅgada. For, O best of monkeys, a father is indeed the kinsman of a son, not the mother.
न हि मम हरिराजसंश्रयात् क्षमतरमस्ति परत्र चेह वा ।
अभिमुखहतवीरसेवितं शयनमिदं मम सेवितुं क्षमम् ॥१६॥
16. na hi mama harirājasaṃśrayāt kṣamataramasti paratra ceha vā ,
abhimukhahatavīrasevitaṃ śayanamidaṃ mama sevituṃ kṣamam.
16. na hi mama harirājasamaṃśrayāt
kṣamataram asti paratra ca iha
vā | abhimukhahatavīrasevitam
śayanam idam mama sevitum kṣamam
16. mama paratra ca iha vā
harirājasamaṃśrayāt kṣamataram na hi
asti abhimukhahatavīrasevitam
idam śayanam mama sevitum kṣamam
16. Indeed, for me, there is nothing more suitable or beneficial than (what has arisen from) the alliance of the king of monkeys (Sugriva), neither in the next world nor in this one. This bed, revered by brave warriors who fell facing the enemy, is now fit for me to occupy.
