Yet, for that great-souled one (ātman), who was so mighty, knew righteousness (dharma), and was performing austerities (tapas) for a son, there was no son to continue his lineage.
चिन्तयानस्य तस्यैवं बुद्धिरासीन्महात्मनः ।
सुतार्थं वाजिमेधेन किमर्थं न यजाम्यहम् ॥२॥

As that great-souled one (ātman) was thus contemplating, an idea came to him: "Why do I not perform the horse Vedic ritual (yajña) for the sake of a son?"
स निश्चितां मतिं कृत्वा यष्टव्यमिति बुद्धिमान् ।
मन्त्रिभिः सह धर्मात्मा सर्वैरेव कृतात्मभिः ॥३॥

3. sa niścitāṃ matiṃ kṛtvā yaṣṭavyamiti buddhimān ,

That intelligent and righteous-souled one (dharma-ātman), having made the firm resolve, "A Vedic ritual (yajña) must be performed," then (consulted) with all his ministers, whose minds were disciplined.

4. tato'bravīdidaṃ rājā sumantraṃ mantrisattamam ,

Then the King spoke this to Sumantra, the best of ministers: "Quickly bring to me all those preceptors, along with their priests."
एतच्छ्रुत्वा रहः सूतो राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ।
ऋत्विग्भिरुपदिष्टो ऽयं पुरावृत्तो मया श्रुतः ॥५॥

Having heard this, the charioteer (Sūta) privately said this to the king: "This ancient tale, which was taught by the priests, was heard by me."
सनत्कुमारो भगवान्पूर्वं कथितवान् कथाम् ।
ऋषीणां संनिधौ राजंस्तव पुत्रागमं प्रति ॥६॥

O King, the revered Sanatkumāra formerly told a story in the presence of the sages concerning the arrival of your son.
काश्यपस्य तु पुत्रो ऽस्ति विभाण्डक इति श्रुतः ।
ऋश्यशृङ्ग इति ख्यातस्तस्य पुत्रो भविष्यति ॥७॥

Indeed, Kaśyapa has a son known as Vibhāṇḍaka. His son will be famous as Ṛṣyaśṛṅga.
स वने नित्यसंवृद्धो मुनिर्वनचरः सदा ।
नान्यं जानाति विप्रेन्द्रो नित्यं पित्रनुवर्तनात् ॥८॥

8. sa vane nityasaṃvṛddho munirvanacaraḥ sadā ,
nānyaṃ jānāti viprendro nityaṃ pitranuvartanāt.

saḥ vane nityasaṃvṛddhaḥ muniḥ vanacaraḥ sadā | na

saḥ nityasaṃvṛddhaḥ muniḥ sadā vane vanacaraḥ (asti)

He, always grown up in the forest, is ever a forest-dwelling sage. This chief of Brahmins (viprendra) knows no one else, constantly due to his obedience (anuvartana) to his father.
द्वैविध्यं ब्रह्मचर्यस्य भविष्यति महात्मनः ।
लोकेषु प्रथितं राजन् विप्रैश्च कथितं सदा ॥९॥

9. dvaividhyaṃ brahmacaryasya bhaviṣyati mahātmanaḥ ,

O King, the celibacy (brahmacarya) practiced by a great soul (mahātman) will be of two kinds. This has been renowned among people and always articulated by Brahmins.
तस्यैवं वर्तमानस्य कालः समभिवर्तत ।
अग्निं शुश्रूषमाणस्य पितरं च यशस्विनम् ॥१०॥

10. tasyaivaṃ vartamānasya kālaḥ samabhivartata ,
agniṃ śuśrūṣamāṇasya pitaraṃ ca yaśasvinam.

While he was living in this way, devoutly serving the sacred fire and his illustrious father, the appointed time arrived for him.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु लोमपादः प्रतापवान् ।
अङ्गेषु प्रथितो राजा भविष्यति महाबलः ॥११॥

11. etasminneva kāle tu lomapādaḥ pratāpavān ,
aṅgeṣu prathito rājā bhaviṣyati mahābalaḥ.

Indeed, at this very time, a greatly powerful and glorious king named Lomapada will rule, renowned throughout the Anga kingdom.
तस्य व्यतिक्रमाद् राज्ञो भविष्यति सुदारुणा ।
अनावृष्टिः सुघोरा वै सर्वभूतभयावहा ॥१२॥

12. tasya vyatikramād rājño bhaviṣyati sudāruṇā ,
anāvṛṣṭiḥ sughorā vai sarvabhūtabhayāvahā.

Due to that king's transgression, there will certainly be an extremely harsh and dreadful drought, which will cause fear to all beings.
अनावृष्ट्यां तु वृत्तायां राजा दुःखसमन्वितः ।
ब्राह्मणाञ् श्रुतवृद्धांश्च समानीय प्रवक्ष्यति ॥१३॥

13. anāvṛṣṭyāṃ tu vṛttāyāṃ rājā duḥkhasamanvitaḥ ,

When a drought has occurred, the king, filled with sorrow, will assemble the Brahmins who are learned and elderly, and will address them.
भवन्तः श्रुतधर्माणो लोकचारित्रवेदिनः ।
समादिशन्तु नियमं प्रायश्चित्तं यथा भवेत् ॥१४॥

14. bhavantaḥ śrutadharmāṇo lokacāritravedinaḥ ,

You, being learned in the sacred law (dharma) and knowledgeable of worldly customs, should prescribe a rule and an expiation (prāyaścitta) so that [the situation] may be resolved.
वक्ष्यन्ति ते महीपालं ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः ।
विभाण्डकसुतं राजन् सर्वोपायैरिहानय ॥१५॥

15. vakṣyanti te mahīpālaṃ brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ ,
vibhāṇḍakasutaṃ rājan sarvopāyairihānaya.

te veda-pārāgāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ mahīpālam vakṣyanti rājan,
vibhāṇḍaka-sutam sarva-upāyaiḥ iha ānaya
vibhāṇḍaka-sutam sarva-upāyaiḥ iha ānaya
15.
Those Brahmins, who are masters of the Vedas, will say to the king: "O King, bring the son of Vibhāṇḍaka here by all possible means."
आनाय्य च महीपाल ऋश्यशृङ्गं सुसत्कृतम् ।
प्रयच्छ कन्यां शान्तां वै विधिना सुसमाहितः ॥१६॥

16. ānāyya ca mahīpāla ṛśyaśṛṅgaṃ susatkṛtam ,
prayaccha kanyāṃ śāntāṃ vai vidhinā susamāhitaḥ.

16.
And, O king, having properly honored and brought Ṛṣyaśṛṅga, you should give him the daughter Śāntā according to the prescribed ritual, being deeply focused.
तेषां तु वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा चिन्तां प्रपत्स्यते ।
केनोपायेन वै शक्यमिहानेतुं स वीर्यवान् ॥१७॥

17. teṣāṃ tu vacanaṃ śrutvā rājā cintāṃ prapatsyate ,
kenopāyena vai śakyamihānetuṃ sa vīryavān.

But having heard their words, the king will become anxious, wondering: 'By what means can that powerful one be brought here?'
ततो राजा विनिश्चित्य सह मन्त्रिभिरात्मवान् ।
पुरोहितममात्यांश्च प्रेषयिष्यति सत्कृतान् ॥१८॥

18. tato rājā viniścitya saha mantribhirātmavān ,
purohitamamātyāṃśca preṣayiṣyati satkṛtān.

Then, the wise (ātman) king, having made a decision with his ministers, will send forth the highly respected royal priest and his other counselors.
ते तु राज्ञो वचः श्रुत्वा व्यथिता वनताननाः ।
न गच्छेम ऋषेर्भीता अनुनेष्यन्ति तं नृपम् ॥१९॥

19. te tu rājño vacaḥ śrutvā vyathitā vanatānanāḥ ,
na gacchema ṛṣerbhītā anuneṣyanti taṃ nṛpam.

19.
But they, having heard the king's command, became distressed and downcast. Afraid of the sage, they will entreat the king, saying, 'We should not go.'
वक्ष्यन्ति चिन्तयित्वा ते तस्योपायांश्च तान् क्षमान् ।
आनेष्यामो वयं विप्रं न च दोषो भविष्यति ॥२०॥

20. vakṣyanti cintayitvā te tasyopāyāṃśca tān kṣamān ,

Having considered the matter, they will then propose suitable methods to the king and say: 'We ourselves will bring the sage, and there will be no harm done.'
एवमङ्गाधिपेनैव गणिकाभिरृषेः सुतः ।
आनीतो ऽवर्षयद्देवः शान्ता चास्मै प्रदीयते ॥२१॥

21. evamaṅgādhipenaiva gaṇikābhirṛṣeḥ sutaḥ ,

Thus, the son of the sage was brought by the king of Anga himself, accompanied by courtesans. The god (Indra) caused rain to fall, and Shanta was given to him.
ऋश्यशृङ्गस्तु जामाता पुत्रांस्तव विधास्यति ।

Ṛṣyaśṛṅga, your son-in-law, will indeed beget sons for you. This much has been declared by me, as it was narrated by Sanatkumāra.
अथ हृष्टो दशरथः सुमन्त्रं प्रत्यभाषत ।
यथर्ष्यशृङ्गस्त्वानीतो विस्तरेण त्वयोच्यताम् ॥२३॥
