मम त्वश्वा निवृत्तस्य न प्रावर्तन्त वर्त्मनि ।
उष्णमश्रु विमुञ्चन्तो रामे संप्रस्थिते वनम् ॥१॥

1. But my horses, as I turned back, would not proceed on the path; they were shedding hot tears, while Rama had departed for the forest.
उभाभ्यां राजपुत्राभ्यामथ कृत्वाहमज्ञलिम् ।
प्रस्थितो रथमास्थाय तद्दुःखमपि धारयन् ॥२॥
2. ubhābhyāṃ rājaputrābhyāmatha kṛtvāhamajñalim ,
prasthito rathamāsthāya tadduḥkhamapi dhārayan.

2. Then, having offered obeisance with folded hands to both princes, I set out, mounting the chariot, while still bearing that sorrow.
गुहेव सार्धं तत्रैव स्थितो ऽस्मि दिवसान्बहून् ।
आशया यदि मां रामः पुनः शब्दापयेदिति ॥३॥
3. guheva sārdhaṃ tatraiva sthito'smi divasānbahūn ,
āśayā yadi māṃ rāmaḥ punaḥ śabdāpayediti.
3. guhena eva sārdham tatra eva sthitaḥ asmi divasān
bahūn āśayā yadi mām rāmaḥ punaḥ śabdāpayet iti

3. I stayed there for many days with Guha, hoping that Rama would call me again.
विषये ते महाराज रामव्यसनकर्शिताः ।
अपि वृक्षाः परिम्लानः सपुष्पाङ्कुरकोरकाः ॥४॥
4. viṣaye te mahārāja rāmavyasanakarśitāḥ ,
api vṛkṣāḥ parimlānaḥ sapuṣpāṅkurakorakāḥ.

4. O great king, in your domain, even the trees - along with their flowers, sprouts, and buds - appear withered, emaciated by the grief for Rama.
न च सर्पन्ति सत्त्वानि व्याला न प्रसरन्ति च ।
रामशोकाभिभूतं तन्निष्कूजमभवद्वनम् ॥५॥
5. na ca sarpanti sattvāni vyālā na prasaranti ca ,
rāmaśokābhibhūtaṃ tanniṣkūjamabhavadvanam.

5. Creatures do not move, nor do wild animals roam. That forest became silent, utterly overwhelmed by the grief for Rama.
लीनपुष्करपत्राश्च नरेन्द्र कलुषोदकाः ।
संतप्तपद्माः पद्मिन्यो लीनमीनविहंगमाः ॥६॥
6. līnapuṣkarapatrāśca narendra kaluṣodakāḥ ,
saṃtaptapadmāḥ padminyo līnamīnavihaṃgamāḥ.

6. O king, the lotus ponds have their lotus leaves sunken, their waters muddied, their lotuses distressed, and their fish and birds have disappeared.
जलजानि च पुष्पाणि माल्यानि स्थलजानि च ।
नाद्य भान्त्यल्पगन्धीनि फलानि च यथा पुरम् ॥७॥
7. jalajāni ca puṣpāṇi mālyāni sthalajāni ca ,
nādya bhāntyalpagandhīni phalāni ca yathā puram.

adya bhānti alpagandhīni phalāni ca yathā puram

7. The aquatic flowers and terrestrial garlands, as well as the fruits, no longer appear as they did before, as they have little fragrance today.
प्रविशन्तमयोध्यां मां न कश्चिदभिनन्दति ।
नरा राममपश्यन्तो निःश्वसन्ति मुहुर्मुहुः ॥८॥
8. praviśantamayodhyāṃ māṃ na kaścidabhinandati ,
narā rāmamapaśyanto niḥśvasanti muhurmuhuḥ.

narāḥ rāmam apaśyantaḥ niḥśvasanti muhurmuhuḥ

8. As I enter Ayodhya, no one greets me. The people, not seeing Rama, sigh repeatedly.
हर्म्यैर्विमानैः प्रासादैरवेक्ष्य रथमागतम् ।
हाहाकारकृता नार्यो रामादर्शनकर्शिताः ॥९॥
9. harmyairvimānaiḥ prāsādairavekṣya rathamāgatam ,
hāhākārakṛtā nāryo rāmādarśanakarśitāḥ.
9. harmyaiḥ vimānaiḥ prāsādaiḥ avekṣya ratham
āgatam hāhākārakṛtāḥ nāryaḥ rāmādarśanakārśitāḥ
9. harmyaiḥ vimānaiḥ prāsādaiḥ ratham āgatam avekṣya,

9. The women, emaciated by not seeing Rama (Rāmādarśana), cried out with wails (hāhākāra) from their mansions, palaces, and upper stories, having seen the chariot arrive.
आयतैर्विमलैर्नेत्रैरश्रुवेगपरिप्लुतैः ।
अन्योन्यमभिवीक्षन्ते व्यक्तमार्ततराः स्त्रियः ॥१०॥
10. āyatairvimalairnetrairaśruvegapariplutaiḥ ,
anyonyamabhivīkṣante vyaktamārtatarāḥ striyaḥ.
10. āyataiḥ vimalaiḥ netraiḥ aśruvegaparịplutaiḥ
anyonyam abhivīkṣante vyaktam ārtatarāḥ striyaḥ

10. The women, clearly very distressed, gaze at each other with wide, pure eyes that are flooded by a rush of tears.
नामित्राणां न मित्राणामुदासीनजनस्य च ।
अहमार्ततया कं चिद्विशेषं नोपलक्षये ॥११॥
11. nāmitrāṇāṃ na mitrāṇāmudāsīnajanasya ca ,
ahamārtatayā kaṃ cidviśeṣaṃ nopalakṣaye.
11. na amitrāṇām na mitrāṇām udāsīnajanasya ca
aham ārtatayā kam cit viśeṣam na upalakṣaye
11. aham ārtatayā amitrāṇām na mitrāṇām na
उदासीनजनस्य ca kam cit viśeṣam na upalakṣaye
11. Due to my suffering, I perceive no distinction whatsoever among enemies, friends, or even neutral persons.
अप्रहृष्टमनुष्या च दीननागतुरंगमा ।
आर्तस्वरपरिम्लाना विनिःश्वसितनिःस्वना ॥१२॥
12. aprahṛṣṭamanuṣyā ca dīnanāgaturaṃgamā ,
ārtasvaraparimlānā viniḥśvasitaniḥsvanā.
12. aprahṛṣṭamanuṣyā ca dīnanāgaturaṃgamā
ārtasvaraparịmlānā viniḥśvasitaniḥsvanā

12. And [the city] has unhappy people, with dejected elephants and horses; it is withered by sounds of anguish and filled with the noise of sighs.
निरानन्दा महाराज रामप्रव्राजनातुला ।
कौसल्या पुत्र हीनेव अयोध्या प्रतिभाति मा ॥१३॥
13. nirānandā mahārāja rāmapravrājanātulā ,
kausalyā putra hīneva ayodhyā pratibhāti mā.

13. O great king, Ayodhya, joyless and distressed by Rama's exile, appears to me like Kausalya herself, deprived of her son.
सूतस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा वाचा परमदीनया ।
बाष्पोपहतया राजा तं सूतमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१४॥
14. sūtasya vacanaṃ śrutvā vācā paramadīnayā ,
bāṣpopahatayā rājā taṃ sūtamidamabravīt.
14. sūtasya vacanam śrutvā vācā paramadīnayā
bāṣpopahatayā rājā tam sūtam idam abravīt
14. rājā sūtasya vacanam bāṣpopahatayā paramadīnayā

14. Hearing the charioteer's words, the king, his voice extremely sorrowful and choked with tears, spoke the following to that charioteer.
कैकेय्या विनियुक्तेन पापाभिजनभावया ।
मया न मन्त्रकुशलैर्वृद्धैः सह समर्थितम् ॥१५॥
15. kaikeyyā viniyuktena pāpābhijanabhāvayā ,
mayā na mantrakuśalairvṛddhaiḥ saha samarthitam.
15. kaikeyyā viniyuktena pāpābhijanabhāvayā mayā
na mantrakuśalaiḥ vṛddhaiḥ saha samarthitam
15. mayā kaikeyyā pāpābhijanabhāvayā viniyuktena

15. Instigated by Kaikeyī - she of sinful origin - I did not deliberate this matter with wise elders skilled in counsel.
न सुहृद्भिर्न चामात्यैर्मन्त्रयित्वा न नैगमैः ।
मयायमर्थः संमोहात् स्त्रीहेतोः सहसा कृतः ॥१६॥
16. na suhṛdbhirna cāmātyairmantrayitvā na naigamaiḥ ,
mayāyamarthaḥ saṃmohāt strīhetoḥ sahasā kṛtaḥ.
16. na suhṛdbhiḥ na ca amātyaiḥ mantrayitvā na naigamaiḥ
mayā ayam arthaḥ saṃmohāt strīhetoḥ sahasā kṛtaḥ
16. mayā suhṛdbhiḥ na amātyaiḥ ca na naigamaiḥ na
mantrayitvā ayam arthaḥ saṃmohāt strīhetoḥ sahasā kṛtaḥ
16. Without consulting with friends, or ministers, or even citizens, I impulsively carried out this matter out of sheer delusion, all for the sake of a woman.
भवितव्यतया नूनमिदं वा व्यसनं महत् ।
कुलस्यास्य विनाशाय प्राप्तं सूत यदृच्छया ॥१७॥
17. bhavitavyatayā nūnamidaṃ vā vyasanaṃ mahat ,
kulasyāsya vināśāya prāptaṃ sūta yadṛcchayā.
17. bhavitavyatayā nūnam idam vā vyasanam mahat
kulasya asya vināśāya prāptam sūta yadṛcchayā
17. sūta nūnam idam mahat vyasanam asya kulasya
vināśāya bhavitavyatayā vā yadṛcchayā prāptam
17. O charioteer, this great calamity has certainly come about for the destruction of this family, whether by destiny or by mere chance.
सूत यद्यस्ति ते किं चिन्मयापि सुकृतं कृतम् ।
त्वं प्रापयाशु मां रामं प्राणाः संत्वरयन्ति माम् ॥१८॥
18. sūta yadyasti te kiṃ cinmayāpi sukṛtaṃ kṛtam ,
tvaṃ prāpayāśu māṃ rāmaṃ prāṇāḥ saṃtvarayanti mām.
18. sūta yadi asti te kimcit mayā api sukṛtam kṛtam
tvam prāpaya āśu mām rāmam prāṇāḥ saṃtvarayanti mām
18. sūta yadi mayā api kimcit sukṛtam kṛtam asti te,
tvam āśu mām rāmam prāpaya.
prāṇāḥ mām saṃtvarayanti.
18. O Charioteer, if I have ever performed any good deed (sukṛta) for you, then quickly take me to Rama. My life breaths are hastening me (towards death).
यद् यद् यापि ममैवाज्ञा निवर्तयतु राघवम् ।
न शक्ष्यामि विना राम मुहूर्तमपि जीवितुम् ॥१९॥
19. yad yad yāpi mamaivājñā nivartayatu rāghavam ,
na śakṣyāmi vinā rāma muhūrtamapi jīvitum.
19. yat yat yā api mama eva ājñā nivartayatu rāghavam
na śakṣyāmi vinā rāma muhūrtam api jīvitum
19. yat yat yā api mama eva ājñā nivartayatu rāghavam.
rāma vinā muhūrtam api जीवितुम् na śakṣyāmi.
19. Whatever command (ājñā) it may be, even if it was my own, let it bring back Rama, the descendant of Raghu. I shall not be able to live even for a moment without Rama.
अथ वापि महाबाहुर्गतो दूरं भविष्यति ।
मामेव रथमारोप्य शीघ्रं रामाय दर्शय ॥२०॥
20. atha vāpi mahābāhurgato dūraṃ bhaviṣyati ,
māmeva rathamāropya śīghraṃ rāmāya darśaya.
20. atha vā api mahābāhuḥ gataḥ dūram bhaviṣyati
mām eva ratham āropya śīghram rāmāya darśaya
20. atha vā api mahābāhuḥ dūram gataḥ bhaviṣyati.
mām eva ratham āropya śīghram rāmāya darśaya.
20. Or perhaps the great-armed one (mahābāhu) will have gone far away. (If so), quickly place me on the chariot and show me to Rama.
वृत्तदंष्ट्रो महेष्वासः क्वासौ लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः ।
यदि जीवामि साध्वेनं पश्येयं सह सीतया ॥२१॥
21. vṛttadaṃṣṭro maheṣvāsaḥ kvāsau lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ ,
yadi jīvāmi sādhvenaṃ paśyeyaṃ saha sītayā.
21. vṛttadaṃṣṭraḥ maheṣvāsaḥ kva asau lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ
yadi jīvāmi sādhu enam paśyeyam saha sītayā
21. vṛttadaṃṣṭraḥ maheṣvāsaḥ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ asau kva? yadi jīvāmi,
sādhu enam sītayā saha paśyeyam.
21. Where is that great-armed one (mahābāhu), the great archer, the elder brother of Lakshmana, he of the firm jaws? If I live, I wish to see him with Sita.
लोहिताक्षं महाबाहुमामुक्तमणिकुण्डलम् ।
रामं यदि न पश्यामि गमिष्यामि यमक्षयम् ॥२२॥
22. lohitākṣaṃ mahābāhumāmuktamaṇikuṇḍalam ,
rāmaṃ yadi na paśyāmi gamiṣyāmi yamakṣayam.
22. lohitākṣam mahābāhum āmuktamaṇikuṇḍalam
rāmam yadi na paśyāmi gamiṣyāmi yamakṣayam
22. yadi rāmam lohitākṣam mahābāhum āmuktamaṇikuṇḍalam
na paśyāmi yamakṣayam gamiṣyāmi
22. If I do not see Rama, who has red eyes, mighty arms, and wears jeweled earrings, I will go to the abode of Yama (the god of death).
अतो नु किं दुःखतरं यो ऽहमिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम् ।
इमामवस्थामापन्नो नेह पश्यामि राघवम् ॥२३॥
23. ato nu kiṃ duḥkhataraṃ yo'hamikṣvākunandanam ,
imāmavasthāmāpanno neha paśyāmi rāghavam.
23. ataḥ nu kim duḥkhataram yaḥ aham ikṣvākunandanam
imām avasthām āpannaḥ na iha paśyāmi rāghavam
23. yaḥ aham imām avasthām āpannaḥ ataḥ kim nu
duḥkhataram iha ikṣvākunandanam rāghavam na paśyāmi
23. What could be more sorrowful than this, that I, having fallen into such a state, do not see Raghava, the delight of the Ikshvaku (ikṣvāku) dynasty, here?
हा राम रामानुज हा हा वैदेहि तपस्विनी ।
न मां जानीत दुःखेन म्रियमाणमनाथवत् ।
दुस्तरो जीवता देवि मयायं शोकसागरः ॥२४॥
24. hā rāma rāmānuja hā hā vaidehi tapasvinī ,
na māṃ jānīta duḥkhena mriyamāṇamanāthavat ,
dustaro jīvatā devi mayāyaṃ śokasāgaraḥ.
24. hā rāma rāmānuja hā hā vaidehi
tapasvinī na mām jānīta duḥkhena
mriyamāṇam anāthavat dustaraḥ
jīvatā devi mayā ayam śokasāgaraḥ
24. hā rāma rāmānuja hā hā tapasvinī
vaidehi duḥkhena anāthavat
mriyamāṇam mām na jānīta devi mayā
jīvatā ayam śokasāgaraḥ dustaraḥ
24. Alas, Rama! Alas, Lakshmana! Alas, alas, O ascetic Vaidehi! You do not know me, dying from grief like an orphan. O goddess, this ocean of sorrow (śokasāgara) is impossible for me to cross while I live.
अशोभनं यो ऽहमिहाद्य राघवं दिदृक्षमाणो न लभे सलक्ष्मणम् ।
इतीव राजा विलपन्महायशाः पपात तूर्णं शयने स मूर्छितः ॥२५॥
25. aśobhanaṃ yo'hamihādya rāghavaṃ didṛkṣamāṇo na labhe salakṣmaṇam ,
itīva rājā vilapanmahāyaśāḥ papāta tūrṇaṃ śayane sa mūrchitaḥ.
25. aśobhanam yaḥ aham iha adya rāghavam
didṛkṣamāṇaḥ na labhe salakṣmaṇam
iti iva rājā vilapan mahāyaśāḥ
papāta tūrṇam śayane saḥ mūrcchitaḥ
25. aśobhanam yaḥ aham iha adya salakṣmaṇam
rāghavam didṛkṣamāṇaḥ na labhe
iti iva saḥ mahāyaśāḥ rājā vilapan
tūrṇam mūrcchitaḥ śayane papāta
25. How unfortunate that I, wishing to see Raghava with Lakshmana here today, do not find him. Thus, lamenting, the greatly renowned king quickly fell unconscious onto his bed.
इति विलपति पार्थिवे प्रनष्टे करुणतरं द्विगुणं च रामहेतोः ।
वचनमनुनिशम्य तस्य देवी भयमगमत् पुनरेव राममाता ॥२६॥
26. iti vilapati pārthive pranaṣṭe karuṇataraṃ dviguṇaṃ ca rāmahetoḥ ,
vacanamanuniśamya tasya devī bhayamagamat punareva rāmamātā.

karuṇataram dviguṇam ca rāmahetoḥ
vacanam anuniśamya tasya devī

26. Thus, as the king lay distraught and lamented with even greater pity and twofold intensity on account of Rama, Queen Kausalya, Rama's mother, hearing his words, again became afraid.
