तत् सर्वमखिलेनाशु प्रस्थाप्य भरताग्रजः ।
हयं लक्ष्मणसंपन्नं कृष्णसारं मुमोच ह ॥१॥
1. tat sarvamakhilenāśu prasthāpya bharatāgrajaḥ ,

1. Bharata's elder brother (Rama), having swiftly made all arrangements completely, then released the black antelope horse, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, for the Vedic ritual (yajña).
ऋत्विग्भिर्लक्ष्मणं सार्धमश्वे च विनियुज्य सः ।
ततो ऽभ्यगच्छत् काकुत्स्थः सह सैन्येन नैमिषम् ॥२॥
2. ṛtvigbhirlakṣmaṇaṃ sārdhamaśve ca viniyujya saḥ ,
tato'bhyagacchat kākutsthaḥ saha sainyena naimiṣam.

tataḥ abhyagacchat kākutsthaḥ saha sainyena naimiṣam

2. Having appointed Lakṣmaṇa, together with the priests, to attend to the horse, he, Kākutstha (Rama), then proceeded with his army to Naimiṣa.
यज्ञवाटं महाबाहुर्दृष्ट्वा परममद्भुतम् ।
प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे श्रीमानिति च सो ऽब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. yajñavāṭaṃ mahābāhurdṛṣṭvā paramamadbhutam ,
praharṣamatulaṃ lebhe śrīmāniti ca so'bravīt.
3. yajña-vāṭam mahābāhuḥ dṛṣṭvā paramam adbhutam
praharṣam atulam lebhe śrīmān iti ca saḥ abravīt
3. mahābāhuḥ śrīmān saḥ paramam adbhutam yajña-vāṭam

3. The mighty-armed, glorious (Rama), having seen the supremely wonderful enclosure for the Vedic ritual (yajña), attained immeasurable joy and exclaimed thus...
नैमिषे वसतस्तस्य सर्व एव नराधिपाः ।
आजग्मुः सर्वराष्ट्रेभ्यस्तान् रामः प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥४॥
4. naimiṣe vasatastasya sarva eva narādhipāḥ ,
ājagmuḥ sarvarāṣṭrebhyastān rāmaḥ pratyapūjayat.

ājagmuḥ sarvarāṣṭrebhyaḥ tān rāmaḥ pratyapūjayat
4. While he was dwelling in Naimiṣa, all the kings from every kingdom came to him, and Rāma honored them in return.
उपकार्यान्महार्हांश्च पार्थिवानां महात्मनाम् ।
सानुगानां नरश्रेष्ठो व्यादिदेश महाद्युतिः ॥५॥
5. upakāryānmahārhāṃśca pārthivānāṃ mahātmanām ,
sānugānāṃ naraśreṣṭho vyādideśa mahādyutiḥ.
5. upakāryān mahārhān ca pārthivānām mahātmanām
sānugānām naraśreṣṭhaḥ vyādideśa mahādyutiḥ
5. The most excellent among men (naraśreṣṭhaḥ), the greatly resplendent one, assigned suitable and highly honorable accommodations for those great-souled (mahātman) kings, along with their attendants.
अन्नपानानि वस्त्राणि सानुगानां महात्मनाम् ।
भरतः संददावाशु शत्रुघ्नसहितस्तदा ॥६॥
6. annapānāni vastrāṇi sānugānāṃ mahātmanām ,
bharataḥ saṃdadāvāśu śatrughnasahitastadā.

bharataḥ saṃdadāu āśu śatrughnasahitaḥ tadā
6. Then, Bharata, accompanied by Śatrughna, quickly provided food, drinks, and garments for those great-souled (mahātman) kings and their attendants.
वानराश्च महात्मानः सुग्रीवसहितास्तदा ।
विप्राणां प्रणताः सर्वे चक्रिरे परिवेषणम् ॥७॥
7. vānarāśca mahātmānaḥ sugrīvasahitāstadā ,
viprāṇāṃ praṇatāḥ sarve cakrire pariveṣaṇam.
7. vānarāḥ ca mahātmānaḥ sugrīvasahitāḥ tadā
viprāṇām praṇatāḥ sarve cakrire pariveṣaṇam
7. Then, all those great-souled (mahātman) vānaras, accompanied by Sugrīva, respectfully performed the serving of the Brahmins.
विभीषणश्च रक्षोभिः स्रग्विभिर्बहुभिर्वृतः ।
ऋषीणामुग्रतपसां किंकरः पर्युपस्थितः ॥८॥
8. vibhīṣaṇaśca rakṣobhiḥ sragvibhirbahubhirvṛtaḥ ,
ṛṣīṇāmugratapasāṃ kiṃkaraḥ paryupasthitaḥ.
8. vibhīṣaṇaḥ ca rakṣobhiḥ sragvibhiḥ bahubhiḥ
vṛtaḥ ṛṣīṇām ugratapasām kiṃkaraḥ paryupasthitaḥ

8. Vibhīṣaṇa, accompanied by many garland-wearing rākṣasas, was present as a servant to the sages who performed severe asceticism (tapas).
एवं सुविहितो यज्ञो हयमेधो ऽभ्यवर्तत ।
लक्ष्मणेनाभिगुप्ता च हयचर्या प्रवर्तिता ॥९॥
9. evaṃ suvihito yajño hayamedho'bhyavartata ,
lakṣmaṇenābhiguptā ca hayacaryā pravartitā.
9. evam suvihitaḥ yajñaḥ hayamedhaḥ abhyavartata
lakṣmaṇena abhi guptā ca hayacaryā pravartitā
9. evam suvihitaḥ hayamedhaḥ yajñaḥ abhyavartata
ca lakṣmaṇena abhi guptā hayacaryā pravartitā
9. Thus, the well-arranged horse Vedic ritual (yajña) commenced. And the horse's ceremonial journey (hayacaryā) was set in motion, guarded by Lakṣmaṇa.
नान्यः शब्दो ऽभवत्तत्र हयमेधे महात्मनः ।
छन्दतो देहि विस्रब्धो यावत्तुष्यन्ति याचकाः ।
तावद्वानररक्षोभिर्दत्तमेवाभ्यदृश्यत ॥१०॥
10. nānyaḥ śabdo'bhavattatra hayamedhe mahātmanaḥ ,
chandato dehi visrabdho yāvattuṣyanti yācakāḥ ,
tāvadvānararakṣobhirdattamevābhyadṛśyata.
10. na anyaḥ śabdaḥ abhavat tatra hayamedhe
mahātmanaḥ chandataḥ dehi visrabdhaḥ
yāvat tuṣyanti yācakāḥ tāvat
vānara rakṣobhiḥ dattam eva abhyadṛśyata
10. mahātmanaḥ hayamedhe tatra anyaḥ śabdaḥ na abhavat yāvat yācakāḥ tuṣyanti,
tāvat chandataḥ visrabdhaḥ dehi (iti) vānara rakṣobhiḥ dattam eva abhyadṛśyata
10. At the great-souled one's (Rāma's) horse Vedic ritual (yajña), no other sound was heard except the instruction, 'Give willingly and confidently until the supplicants are satisfied.' Consequently, only donations were observed being made by the vānaras and rākṣasas.
न कश्चिन्मलिनस्तत्र दीनो वाप्यथ वा कृशः ।
तस्मिन्यज्ञवरे राज्ञो हृष्टपुष्टजनावृते ॥११॥
11. na kaścinmalinastatra dīno vāpyatha vā kṛśaḥ ,
tasminyajñavare rājño hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛte.
11. na kaścit malinaḥ tatra dīnaḥ vā api atha vā
kṛśaḥ tasmin yajñavare rājñaḥ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛte
11. rājñaḥ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛte tasmin yajñavare tatra kaścit malinaḥ na,
dīnaḥ vā api atha vā kṛśaḥ (na)
11. In that supreme Vedic ritual (yajña) of the king, which was teeming with joyful and well-nourished people, there was no one who was dirty, destitute, or emaciated.
ये च तत्र महात्मानो मुनयश्चिरजीविनः ।
नास्मरंस्तादृशं यज्ञं दानौघसमलंकृतम् ॥१२॥
12. ye ca tatra mahātmāno munayaścirajīvinaḥ ,
nāsmaraṃstādṛśaṃ yajñaṃ dānaughasamalaṃkṛtam.
12. ye ca tatra mahātmānaḥ munayaḥ cirajīvinaḥ na
asmaran tādṛśam yajñam dānaughasamalaṅkṛtam
12. tatra ye cirajīvinaḥ mahātmānaḥ munayaḥ ca
tādṛśam dānaughasamalaṅkṛtam yajñam na asmaran
12. And even the long-lived, great-souled (mahātman) sages (muni) who were present there could not recall a (Vedic ritual) (yajña) so splendidly adorned with streams of donations.
रजतानां सुवर्णानां रत्नानामथ वाससाम् ।
अनिशं दीयमानानां नान्तः समुपदृश्यते ॥१३॥
13. rajatānāṃ suvarṇānāṃ ratnānāmatha vāsasām ,
aniśaṃ dīyamānānāṃ nāntaḥ samupadṛśyate.
13. rajatānām suvarṇānām ratnānām atha vāsasām
aniśam dīyamānānām na antaḥ samupadṛśyate
13. aniśam dīyamānānām rajatānām suvarṇānām
ratnānām atha vāsasām antaḥ na samupadṛśyate
13. No end could be seen to the silver, gold, jewels, and garments that were continuously being given away.
न शक्रस्य न सोमस्य यमस्य वरुणस्य वा ।
ईदृशो दृष्टपूर्वो न एवमूचुस्तपोधनाः ॥१४॥
14. na śakrasya na somasya yamasya varuṇasya vā ,
īdṛśo dṛṣṭapūrvo na evamūcustapodhanāḥ.
14. na śakrasya na somasya yamasya varuṇasya vā
īdṛśaḥ dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ na evam ūcuḥ tapodhanaḥ
14. tapodhanaḥ evam ūcuḥ śakrasya na somasya
yamasya varuṇasya vā īdṛśaḥ na dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ
14. The ascetics (tapas-dhana) declared, "Such an event was never seen before, not even in the realms associated with Indra (Śakra), Soma, Yama, or Varuna."
सर्वत्र वानरास्तस्थुः सर्वत्रैव च राक्षसाः ।
वासो धनानि कामिभ्यः पूर्णहस्ता ददुर्भृशम् ॥१५॥
15. sarvatra vānarāstasthuḥ sarvatraiva ca rākṣasāḥ ,
vāso dhanāni kāmibhyaḥ pūrṇahastā dadurbhṛśam.
15. sarvatra vānarāḥ tasthuḥ sarvatra eva ca rākṣasāḥ
vāsas dhanāni kāmibhyaḥ pūrṇahastāḥ daduḥ bhṛśam
15. sarvatra vānarāḥ tasthuḥ ca sarvatra eva rākṣasāḥ
pūrṇahastāḥ kāmibhyaḥ vāsas dhanāni bhṛśam daduḥ
15. Monkeys (vānara) were present everywhere, and indeed, rākṣasas were also everywhere. With full hands, they profusely gave garments and wealth to those who desired them.
ईदृशो राजसिंहस्य यज्ञः सर्वगुणान्वितः ।
संवत्सरमथो साग्रं वर्तते न च हीयते ॥१६॥
16. īdṛśo rājasiṃhasya yajñaḥ sarvaguṇānvitaḥ ,
saṃvatsaramatho sāgraṃ vartate na ca hīyate.
16. īdṛśaḥ rājasiṃhasya yajñaḥ sarvaguṇānvitaḥ
saṃvatsaram atha u sāgram vartate na ca hīyate
16. rājasiṃhasya sarvaguṇānvitaḥ īdṛśaḥ yajñaḥ
saṃvatsaram sāgram atho vartate ca na hīyate
16. Such was the (Vedic ritual) [yajña] of the mighty king, endowed with all virtues. It has been continuing for more than a year and shows no sign of diminishing.
