ततस्तां रजनीमुष्य भरतः सपरिच्छदः ।
कृतातिथ्यो भरद्वाजं कामादभिजगाम ह ॥१॥
1. tatastāṃ rajanīmuṣya bharataḥ saparicchadaḥ ,

1. Having spent that night there, Bharata, with his retinue, and having received hospitality, then approached Bharadvaja as he wished.
तमृषिः पुरुषव्याघ्रं प्रेक्ष्य प्राञ्जलिमागतम् ।
हुताग्निहोत्रो भरतं भरद्वाजो ऽभ्यभाषत ॥२॥
2. tamṛṣiḥ puruṣavyāghraṃ prekṣya prāñjalimāgatam ,
hutāgnihotro bharataṃ bharadvājo'bhyabhāṣata.

2. The sage Bharadvaja, who had just performed his Agnihotra (yajña) sacrifice, upon seeing Bharata, that tiger among men (puruṣa), who had arrived with folded hands, then addressed him.
कच्चिदत्र सुखा रात्रिस्तवास्मद्विषये गता ।
समग्रस्ते जनः कच्चिदातिथ्ये शंस मे ऽनघ ॥३॥
3. kaccidatra sukhā rātristavāsmadviṣaye gatā ,
samagraste janaḥ kaccidātithye śaṃsa me'nagha.
3. kaccit atra sukhā rātriḥ tava asmad-viṣaye gatā
samagraḥ te janaḥ kaccit ātithye śaṃsa me anagha
3. anagha kaccit tava rātriḥ atra asmad-viṣaye sukhā gatā
? kaccit te samagraḥ janaḥ ātithye (sukhaḥ) ? me śaṃsa
3. O sinless one (anagha), tell me: did your night pass pleasantly here in our region? Is your entire retinue (jana) content with the hospitality?
तमुवाचाञ्जलिं कृत्वा भरतो ऽभिप्रणम्य च ।
आश्रमादभिनिष्क्रन्तमृषिमुत्तम तेजसं ॥४॥
4. tamuvācāñjaliṃ kṛtvā bharato'bhipraṇamya ca ,
āśramādabhiniṣkrantamṛṣimuttama tejasaṃ.
4. tam uvāca añjalim kṛtvā bharataḥ abhipraṇamya
ca āśramāt abhiniṣkrāntam ṛṣim uttama-tejasam
4. bharataḥ añjalim kṛtvā ca abhipraṇamya āśramāt

4. Bharata, having made a gesture of reverence (añjali) and bowed down, spoke to that sage of excellent splendor, who had just come out of his hermitage.
सुखोषितो ऽस्मि भगवन् समग्रबलवाहनः ।
तर्पितः सर्वकामैश्च सामात्यो बलवत्त्वया ॥५॥
5. sukhoṣito'smi bhagavan samagrabalavāhanaḥ ,
tarpitaḥ sarvakāmaiśca sāmātyo balavattvayā.
5. sukhoṣitaḥ asmi bhagavan samagra-bala-vāhanaḥ
tarpitaḥ sarva-kāmaiḥ ca sa-āmātyaḥ balavat tvayā
5. bhagavan,
samagra-bala-vāhanaḥ sa-āmātyaḥ aham sukhoṣitaḥ asmi,
ca tvayā balavat sarva-kāmaiḥ tarpitaḥ (asmi)
5. O revered one, I, along with all my army and vehicles, have stayed here comfortably. And I, with my ministers, have been greatly satisfied with all my desires by you.
अपेतक्लमसंतापाः सुभक्ष्याः सुप्रतिश्रयाः ।
अपि प्रेष्यानुपादाय सर्वे स्म सुसुखोषिताः ॥६॥
6. apetaklamasaṃtāpāḥ subhakṣyāḥ supratiśrayāḥ ,
api preṣyānupādāya sarve sma susukhoṣitāḥ.
6. apeta-klama-saṁtāpāḥ subhakṣyāḥ supratiśrayāḥ
api preṣyān upādāya sarve sma susukhoṣitāḥ
6. sarve api preṣyān upādāya apeta-klama-saṁtāpāḥ
subhakṣyāḥ supratiśrayāḥ susukhoṣitāḥ sma
6. All of us, including our servants, were free from fatigue and distress, had good food, and excellent shelter, having stayed very comfortably.
आमन्त्रये ऽहं भगवन् कामं त्वामृषिसत्तम ।
समीपं प्रस्थितं भ्रातुर्मैरेणेक्षस्व चक्षुषा ॥७॥
7. āmantraye'haṃ bhagavan kāmaṃ tvāmṛṣisattama ,
samīpaṃ prasthitaṃ bhrāturmaireṇekṣasva cakṣuṣā.
7. āmantraye aham bhagavan kāmam tvām ṛṣi-sattama
samīpam prasthitam bhrātuḥ maireṇa īkṣasva cakṣuṣā
7. bhagavan ṛṣi-sattama,
aham tvām kāmam āmantraye.
bhrātuḥ samīpam prasthitam (mām) maireṇa cakṣuṣā īkṣasva
7. O revered one, O best among sages, I now bid you farewell. As I depart to be near my brother, please look upon me with an affectionate (maireṇa) eye.
आश्रमं तस्य धर्मज्ञ धार्मिकस्य महात्मनः ।
आचक्ष्व कतमो मार्गः कियानिति च शंस मे ॥८॥
8. āśramaṃ tasya dharmajña dhārmikasya mahātmanaḥ ,
ācakṣva katamo mārgaḥ kiyāniti ca śaṃsa me.
8. āśramam tasya dharmajña dhārmikasya mahātmanaḥ
ācakṣva katamaḥ mārgaḥ kiyān iti ca śaṃsa me
8. dharmajña tasya dhārmikasya mahātmanaḥ āśramam

8. O knower of natural law (dharma), please tell me about the hermitage of that righteous, great-souled one. Describe to me which path leads there and how far away it is.
इति पृष्टस्तु भरतं भ्रातृदर्शनलालसं ।
प्रत्युवाच महातेजा भरद्वाजो महातपाः ॥९॥
9. iti pṛṣṭastu bharataṃ bhrātṛdarśanalālasaṃ ,
pratyuvāca mahātejā bharadvājo mahātapāḥ.

9. Thus questioned, the greatly effulgent and highly ascetic sage Bharadvaja replied to Bharata, who was longing to see his brother.
भरतार्धतृतीयेषु योजनेष्वजने वने ।
चित्रकूटो गिरिस्तत्र रम्यनिर्दरकाननः ॥१०॥
10. bharatārdhatṛtīyeṣu yojaneṣvajane vane ,
citrakūṭo giristatra ramyanirdarakānanaḥ.
10. bharata ardhatṛtīyeṣu yojaneṣu ajane vane
citrakūṭaḥ giriḥ tatra ramyanirgarakānanaḥ
10. bharata tatra ardhatṛtīyeṣu yojaneṣu ajane

10. O Bharata, there, in a secluded forest, at a distance of two and a half yojanas, is the Chitrakuta mountain, featuring beautiful caves and groves.
उत्तरं पार्श्वमासाद्य तस्य मन्दाकिनी नदी ।
पुष्पितद्रुमसंछन्ना रम्यपुष्पितकानना ॥११॥
11. uttaraṃ pārśvamāsādya tasya mandākinī nadī ,
puṣpitadrumasaṃchannā ramyapuṣpitakānanā.

puṣpitadrumasaṃchannā ramyapuṣpitakānanā

11. Approaching its northern side, the Mandakini river flows, densely covered by flowering trees and featuring delightful flowering groves.
अनन्तरं तत् सरितश्चित्रकूटश्च पर्वतः ।
ततो पर्णकुटी तात तत्र तौ वसतो ध्रुवम् ॥१२॥
12. anantaraṃ tat saritaścitrakūṭaśca parvataḥ ,
tato parṇakuṭī tāta tatra tau vasato dhruvam.
12. anantaram tat saritaḥ citrakūṭaḥ ca parvataḥ
tataḥ parṇakuṭī tāta tatra tau vasataḥ dhruvam
12. tāta anantaram tat saritaḥ ca citrakūṭaḥ parvataḥ
ca tataḥ parṇakuṭī tatra tau dhruvam vasataḥ
12. Thereafter, beyond that river and the Chitrakuta mountain, dear one, a leaf-hut can be found. There, those two (Rama and Lakshmana/Sita) certainly reside.
दक्षिणेनैव मार्गेण सव्यदक्षिणमेव च ।
गजवाजिरथाकीर्णां वाहिनीं वाहिनीपते ।
वाहयस्व महाभाग ततो द्रक्ष्यसि राघवम् ॥१३॥
13. dakṣiṇenaiva mārgeṇa savyadakṣiṇameva ca ,
gajavājirathākīrṇāṃ vāhinīṃ vāhinīpate ,
vāhayasva mahābhāga tato drakṣyasi rāghavam.
13. dakṣiṇena eva mārgeṇa savyadakṣiṇam
eva ca gajavājirathākīrṇām
vāhinīm vāhinīpate vāhayasva
mahābhāga tataḥ drakṣyasi rāghavam

13. O commander of the army (vāhinīpati), O greatly fortunate one (mahābhāga), lead your army, which is filled with elephants, horses, and chariots, along the southern path, moving both left and right (i.e., thoroughly). Afterwards, you will see Rama (rāghava).
प्रयाणमिति च श्रुत्वा राजराजस्य योषितः ।
हित्वा यानानि यानार्हा ब्राह्मणं पर्यवारयन् ॥१४॥
14. prayāṇamiti ca śrutvā rājarājasya yoṣitaḥ ,
hitvā yānāni yānārhā brāhmaṇaṃ paryavārayan.
14. prayāṇam iti ca śrutvā rājarājasya yoṣitaḥ
hitvā yānāni yānārhāḥ brāhmaṇam paryavārayan
14. prayāṇam iti śrutvā ca rājarājasya yānārhāḥ

14. And having heard of this departure, the wives of the great king (rājarāja), though accustomed to vehicles, abandoned their conveyances and surrounded the Brahmin.
वेपमाना कृशा दीना सह देव्या सुमन्त्रिया ।
कौसल्या तत्र जग्राह कराभ्यां चरणौ मुनेः ॥१५॥
15. vepamānā kṛśā dīnā saha devyā sumantriyā ,
kausalyā tatra jagrāha karābhyāṃ caraṇau muneḥ.
15. vepamānā kṛśā dīnā saha devyā sumantriyā
kausalyā tatra jagrāha karābhyām caraṇau muneḥ

15. There, trembling, emaciated, and distressed, Kausalya, accompanied by Queen Sumitra, clasped the sage's feet with both of her hands.
असमृद्धेन कामेन सर्वलोकस्य गर्हिता ।
कैकेयी तस्य जग्राह चरणौ सव्यपत्रपा ॥१६॥
16. asamṛddhena kāmena sarvalokasya garhitā ,
kaikeyī tasya jagrāha caraṇau savyapatrapā.

16. Kaikeyī, censured by all people for her improper desire, full of shame, took hold of his feet.
तं प्रदक्षिणमागम्य भगवन्तं महामुनिम् ।
अदूराद्भरतस्यैव तस्थौ दीनमनास्तदा ॥१७॥
17. taṃ pradakṣiṇamāgamya bhagavantaṃ mahāmunim ,
adūrādbharatasyaiva tasthau dīnamanāstadā.
17. tam pradakṣiṇam āgamya bhagavantam mahāmunim
adūrāt bharatasya eva tasthau dīnamanāḥ tadā
17. tadā tam bhagavantam mahāmunim pradakṣiṇam
āgamya bharatasya eva adūrāt dīnamanāḥ tasthau
17. Then, having circled that venerable great sage (mahāmuni) in a clockwise direction (pradakṣiṇa), she stood with a dejected mind not far from Bharata himself.
ततः पप्रच्छ भरतं भरद्वाजो दृढव्रतः ।
विशेषं ज्ञातुमिच्छामि मातॄणां तव राघव ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ papraccha bharataṃ bharadvājo dṛḍhavrataḥ ,
viśeṣaṃ jñātumicchāmi mātṝṇāṃ tava rāghava.
18. tataḥ papraccha bharatam bharadvājaḥ dṛḍhavrataḥ
viśeṣam jñātum icchāmi mātṝṇām tava rāghava
18. tataḥ dṛḍhavrataḥ bharadvājaḥ bharatam papraccha

18. Then, Bharadvāja, steadfast in his observances, asked Bharata: "O descendant of Raghu (Rāghava), I wish to know the specific details of your mothers."
एवमुक्तस्तु भरतो भरद्वाजेन धार्मिकः ।
उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा वाक्यं वचनकोविदः ॥१९॥
19. evamuktastu bharato bharadvājena dhārmikaḥ ,
uvāca prāñjalirbhūtvā vākyaṃ vacanakovidaḥ.
19. evam uktaḥ tu bharataḥ bharadvājena dhārmikaḥ
uvāca prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā vākyam vacanakovidaḥ
19. evam bharadvājena uktaḥ tu dhārmikaḥ vacanakovidaḥ

19. But Bharata, the righteous one, thus addressed by Bharadvāja, being eloquent, spoke words with folded hands.
यामिमां भगवन्दीनां शोकानशनकर्शिताम् ।
पितुर्हि महिषीं देवीं देवतामिव पश्यसि ॥२०॥
20. yāmimāṃ bhagavandīnāṃ śokānaśanakarśitām ,
piturhi mahiṣīṃ devīṃ devatāmiva paśyasi.
20. yām imām bhagavan dīnām śoka anaśana karśitām
pituḥ hi mahiṣīm devīm devatām iva paśyasi
20. bhagavan yām imām pituḥ mahiṣīm dīnām śoka
anaśana karśitām devīm devatām iva hi paśyasi
20. O Lord, you behold this miserable chief queen of my father, who is emaciated by grief and fasting, and is indeed like a deity.
एषा तं पुरुषव्याघ्रं सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम् ।
कौसल्या सुषुवे रामं धातारमदितिर्यथा ॥२१॥
21. eṣā taṃ puruṣavyāghraṃ siṃhavikrāntagāminam ,
kausalyā suṣuve rāmaṃ dhātāramaditiryathā.
21. eṣā tam puruṣavyāghram siṃhavikrāntagāminam
kausalyā suṣuve rāmam dhātāram aditiḥ yathā
21. eṣā kausalyā tam puruṣavyāghram siṃhavikrāntagāminam

21. Kausalya gave birth to Rama, that best among men (puruṣavyāghram) who moves with the powerful stride of a lion, just as Aditi gave birth to Dhata.
अस्या वामभुजं श्लिष्टा यैषा तिष्ठति दुर्मनाः ।
कर्णिकारस्य शाखेव शीर्णपुष्पा वनान्तरे ॥२२॥
22. asyā vāmabhujaṃ śliṣṭā yaiṣā tiṣṭhati durmanāḥ ,
karṇikārasya śākheva śīrṇapuṣpā vanāntare.
22. asyāḥ vāmabhujam śliṣṭā yā eṣā tiṣṭhati durmanāḥ
karṇikārasya śākhā iva śīrṇapuṣpā vanāntare
22. yā eṣā asyāḥ vāmabhujam śliṣṭā durmanāḥ tiṣṭhati,
(sā) karṇikārasya śīrṇapuṣpā śākhā iva vanāntare (asti)
22. This woman, who stands here dejected and clinging to her left arm, is like a branch of the karṇikāra tree in the forest with its flowers fallen.
एतस्यास्तौ सुतौ देव्याः कुमारौ देववर्णिनौ ।
उभौ लक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्नौ वीरौ सत्यपराक्रमौ ॥२३॥
23. etasyāstau sutau devyāḥ kumārau devavarṇinau ,
ubhau lakṣmaṇaśatrughnau vīrau satyaparākramau.
23. etasyāḥ tau sutau devyāḥ kumārau devarṇinau
ubhau lakṣmaṇaśatrughnau vīrau satyaparākramau
23. etasyāḥ devyāḥ tau sutau kumārau ubhau lakṣmaṇaśatrughnau
devarṇinau vīrau satyaparākramau (sthaḥ)
23. These are the two sons of this queen, princes Lakshmana and Shatrughna, both possessing divine complexions and true valor; they are mighty heroes.
यस्याः कृते नरव्याघ्रौ जीवनाशमितो गतौ ।
राजा पुत्रविहीनश्च स्वर्गं दशरथो गतः ॥२४॥
24. yasyāḥ kṛte naravyāghrau jīvanāśamito gatau ,
rājā putravihīnaśca svargaṃ daśaratho gataḥ.
24. yasyāḥ kṛte naravyāghrau jīvanāśam itaḥ gatau
rājā putravihīnaḥ ca svargaṃ daśarathaḥ gataḥ
24. yasyāḥ kṛte naravyāghrau jīvanāśam itaḥ gatau
ca rājā daśarathaḥ putravihīnaḥ svargaṃ gataḥ
24. For whose sake, two tiger-like noble men met the destruction of their lives; and King Daśaratha, bereft of his son, departed to heaven.
ऐश्वर्यकामां कैकेयीमनार्यामार्यरूपिणीम् ।
ममैतां मातरं विद्धि नृशंसां पापनिश्चयाम् ।
यतोमूलं हि पश्यामि व्यसनं महदात्मनः ॥२५॥
25. aiśvaryakāmāṃ kaikeyīmanāryāmāryarūpiṇīm ,
mamaitāṃ mātaraṃ viddhi nṛśaṃsāṃ pāpaniścayām ,
yatomūlaṃ hi paśyāmi vyasanaṃ mahadātmanaḥ.
25. aiśvaryakāmām kaikeyīm anāryām
āryarūpiṇīm mama etām mātaram viddhi
nṛśaṃsām pāpaniścayām yataḥ mūlam
hi paśyāmi vyasanam mahat ātmanaḥ
25. aiśvaryakāmām anāryām āryarūpiṇīm
nṛśaṃsām pāpaniścayām etām mama
mātaram kaikeyīm viddhi hi yataḥ
mahat vyasanam ātmanaḥ mūlam paśyāmi
25. Know this mother of mine, Kaikeyī, to be desirous of sovereignty, ignoble, though appearing noble, cruel, and of wicked resolve. For I indeed perceive her as the root of this great calamity for my self (ātman).
इत्युक्त्वा नरशार्दूलो बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ।
स निशश्वास ताम्राक्षो क्रुद्धो नाग इवासकृत् ॥२६॥
26. ityuktvā naraśārdūlo bāṣpagadgadayā girā ,
sa niśaśvāsa tāmrākṣo kruddho nāga ivāsakṛt.
26. iti uktvā naraśārdūlaḥ bāṣpagadgadayā girā saḥ
niśaśvāsa tāmrākṣaḥ kruddhaḥ nāgaḥ iva asakṛt
26. iti uktvā saḥ naraśārdūlaḥ bāṣpagadgadayā girā
tāmrākṣaḥ kruddhaḥ nāgaḥ iva asakṛt niśaśvāsa
26. Having spoken thus, that tiger among men (naraśārdūla), his voice choked with tears, and his eyes reddened, he repeatedly sighed like an enraged serpent.
भरद्वाजो महर्षिस्तं ब्रुवन्तं भरतं तदा ।
प्रत्युवाच महाबुद्धिरिदं वचनमर्थवत् ॥२७॥
27. bharadvājo maharṣistaṃ bruvantaṃ bharataṃ tadā ,
pratyuvāca mahābuddhiridaṃ vacanamarthavat.
27. bharadvājaḥ maharṣiḥ tam bruvantam bharatam tadā
pratyuvāca mahābuddhiḥ idam vacanam arthavat
27. tadā mahābuddhiḥ maharṣiḥ bharadvājaḥ bruvantam
tam bharatam idam arthavat vacanam pratyuvāca
27. Then, the greatly intelligent great sage (maharṣi) Bharadvāja replied to Bharata, who was speaking, with these meaningful words.
न दोषेणावगन्तव्या कैकेयी भरत त्वया ।
रामप्रव्राजनं ह्येतत् सुखोदर्कं भविष्यति ॥२८॥
28. na doṣeṇāvagantavyā kaikeyī bharata tvayā ,
rāmapravrājanaṃ hyetat sukhodarkaṃ bhaviṣyati.
28. na doṣeṇa avagantavyā kaikeyī bharata tvayā
rāmapravrājanam hi etat sukhodarkam bhaviṣyati
28. bharata tvayā kaikeyī doṣeṇa na avagantavyā hi
etat rāmapravrājanam sukhodarkam bhaviṣyati
28. O Bharata, Kaikeyī should not be considered blameworthy by you. Indeed, this exile of Rāma will have a happy outcome.
अभिवाद्य तु संसिद्धः कृत्वा चैनं प्रदक्षिणम् ।
आमन्त्र्य भरतः सैन्यं युज्यतामित्यचोदयत् ॥२९॥
29. abhivādya tu saṃsiddhaḥ kṛtvā cainaṃ pradakṣiṇam ,
āmantrya bharataḥ sainyaṃ yujyatāmityacodayat.
29. abhivādya tu saṃsiddhaḥ kṛtvā ca enam pradakṣiṇam
āmantrya bharataḥ sainyam yujyatām iti acodayat
29. tu abhivādya ca enam pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā saṃsiddhaḥ
bharataḥ sainyam āmantrya "yujyatām" iti acodayat
29. Having saluted and circumambulated him, Bharata, being fully prepared, then addressed the army, commanding, 'Let the preparations begin!'
ततो वाजिरथान्युक्त्वा दिव्यान् हेमपरिष्क्रितान् ।
अध्यारोहत् प्रयाणार्थी बहून्बहुविधो जनः ॥३०॥
30. tato vājirathānyuktvā divyān hemapariṣkritān ,
adhyārohat prayāṇārthī bahūnbahuvidho janaḥ.
30. tataḥ vājirathān yuktvā divyān hemapariṣkṛtān
adhyārohat prayāṇārthī bahūn bahuvidhaḥ janaḥ
30. tataḥ prayāṇārthī bahuvidhaḥ janaḥ divyān
hemapariṣkṛtān bahūn vājirathān yuktvā adhyārohat
30. Then, having yoked the splendid, gold-adorned chariots, many different kinds of people, desirous of departure, mounted them.
गजकन्यागजाश्चैव हेमकक्ष्याः पताकिनः ।
जीमूता इव घर्मान्ते सघोषाः संप्रतस्थिरे ॥३१॥
31. gajakanyāgajāścaiva hemakakṣyāḥ patākinaḥ ,
jīmūtā iva gharmānte saghoṣāḥ saṃpratasthire.
31. gajakanyāgajāḥ ca eva hemakakṣyāḥ patākinaḥ
jīmūtāḥ iva gharmānte saghoṣāḥ saṃpratastire
31. ca eva hemakakṣyāḥ patākinaḥ gajakanyāgajāḥ

31. And indeed, the female elephants and male elephants, adorned with golden girths and banners, set out, thundering like clouds at the end of the hot season.
विविधान्यपि यानानि महानि च लघूनि च ।
प्रययुः सुमहार्हाणि पादैरेव पदातयः ॥३२॥
32. vividhānyapi yānāni mahāni ca laghūni ca ,
prayayuḥ sumahārhāṇi pādaireva padātayaḥ.
32. vividhāni api yānāni mahāni ca laghūni ca
prayayuḥ sumahārhāṇi pādaiḥ eva padātayaḥ
32. padātayaḥ vividhāni api mahāni ca laghūni ca
sumahārhāṇi yānāni (santapi) pādaiḥ eva prayayuḥ
32. Even though there were various kinds of vehicles, both large and small, and highly splendid ones, the foot soldiers proceeded solely on foot.
अथ यानप्रवेकैस्तु कौसल्याप्रमुखाः स्त्रियः ।
रामदर्शनकाङ्क्षिण्यः प्रययुर्मुदितास्तदा ॥३३॥
33. atha yānapravekaistu kausalyāpramukhāḥ striyaḥ ,
rāmadarśanakāṅkṣiṇyaḥ prayayurmuditāstadā.
33. atha yānapravekaiḥ tu kausalyāpramukhāḥ striyaḥ
rāmadarśanakāṅkṣiṇyaḥ prayayuḥ muditāḥ tadā
33. atha tadā kausalyāpramukhāḥ rāmadarśanakāṅkṣiṇyaḥ
muditāḥ striyaḥ yānapravekaiḥ tu prayayuḥ
33. Then, the women led by Kausalya, joyful and desiring to see Rama, proceeded in excellent vehicles at that time.
स चार्कतरुणाभासां नियुक्तां शिबिकां शुभाम् ।
आस्थाय प्रययौ श्रीमान्भरतः सपरिच्छदः ॥३४॥
34. sa cārkataruṇābhāsāṃ niyuktāṃ śibikāṃ śubhām ,
āsthāya prayayau śrīmānbharataḥ saparicchadaḥ.
34. saḥ ca arkataraṇābhāsām nīyuktām śibikām śubhām
āsthāya prayayau śrīmān bharataḥ saparicchadaḥ
34. ca śrīmān saparicchadaḥ bharataḥ arkataraṇābhāsām
nīyuktām śubhām śibikām āsthāya saḥ prayayau
34. And the glorious Bharata, accompanied by his retinue, mounted an appointed, splendid palanquin that had the radiance of the rising sun, and proceeded.
सा प्रयाता महासेना गजवाजिरथाकुला ।
दक्षिणां दिशमावृत्य महामेघ इवोत्थितः ।
वनानि तु व्यतिक्रम्य जुष्टानि मृगपक्षिभिः ॥३५॥
35. sā prayātā mahāsenā gajavājirathākulā ,
dakṣiṇāṃ diśamāvṛtya mahāmegha ivotthitaḥ ,
vanāni tu vyatikramya juṣṭāni mṛgapakṣibhiḥ.
35. sā prayātā mahāsenā gajavājirathākulā
dakṣiṇām diśam āvṛtya
mahāmeghaḥ iva utthitaḥ vanāni tu
vyatikramya juṣṭāni mṛgapakṣibhiḥ
35. sā gajavājirathākulā mahāsenā (api) utthitaḥ mahāmeghaḥ iva dakṣiṇām diśam āvṛtya prayātā (babhūva).
vanāni tu mṛgapakṣibhiḥ juṣṭāni vyatikramya (gataḥ).
35. That great army, crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, proceeded, covering the southern direction like a rising great cloud. And having traversed the forests frequented by deer and birds...
सा संप्रहृष्टद्विपवाजियोधा वित्रासयन्ती मृगपक्षिसंघान् ।
महद्वनं तत् प्रविगाहमाना रराज सेना भरतस्य तत्र ॥३६॥
36. sā saṃprahṛṣṭadvipavājiyodhā vitrāsayantī mṛgapakṣisaṃghān ,
mahadvanaṃ tat pravigāhamānā rarāja senā bharatasya tatra.
36. sa saṃprahṛṣṭadvipavājiyodhā vitrāsayantī mṛgapakṣisaṃghān
mahat vanam tat pravigāhamānā rarāja senā bharatasya tatra
36. tatra bharatasya sā senā saṃprahṛṣṭadvipavājiyodhā
mṛgapakṣisaṃghān vitrāsayantī tat mahat vanam pravigāhamānā rarāja
36. That army of Bharata, filled with highly excited elephants, horses, and warriors, shone splendidly there as it penetrated that great forest, startling the herds of deer and flocks of birds.
