स मुहूर्तमिव ध्यत्वा मनसा चाधिगम्य ताम् ।
अवप्लुतो महातेजाः प्राकारं तस्य वेश्मनः ॥१॥

1. Having contemplated for a moment and mentally ascertained her (Sītā's location), the greatly energetic (Hanuman) then jumped onto the wall of that palace.
स तु संहृष्टसर्वाङ्गः प्राकारस्थो महाकपिः ।
पुष्पिताग्रान् वसन्तादौ ददर्श विविधान्द्रुमान् ॥२॥
2. sa tu saṃhṛṣṭasarvāṅgaḥ prākārastho mahākapiḥ ,
puṣpitāgrān vasantādau dadarśa vividhāndrumān.

2. Standing on the wall, that great monkey (Hanuman), whose every limb was thrilled, then saw various trees with blossoming tops, typical of the beginning of spring.
सालानशोकान्भव्यांश्च चम्पकांश्च सुपुष्पितान् ।
उद्दालकान्नागवृक्षांश्चूतान् कपिमुखानपि ॥३॥
3. sālānaśokānbhavyāṃśca campakāṃśca supuṣpitān ,
uddālakānnāgavṛkṣāṃścūtān kapimukhānapi.

3. (He saw) Sal trees, Ashoka trees, and beautiful, well-blossomed Champaka trees, Uddalaka trees, Naga trees, mango trees, and even monkey-faced trees.
अथाम्रवणसंछन्नां लताशतसमावृताम् ।
ज्यामुक्त इव नाराचः पुप्लुवे वृक्षवाटिकाम् ॥४॥
4. athāmravaṇasaṃchannāṃ latāśatasamāvṛtām ,
jyāmukta iva nārācaḥ pupluve vṛkṣavāṭikām.

4. Then, like an arrow released from a bowstring, he leaped towards the grove of trees, which was hidden by mango orchards and enveloped by hundreds of climbing plants.
स प्रविष्य विचित्रां तां विहगैरभिनादिताम् ।
राजतैः काञ्चनैश्चैव पादपैः सर्वतोवृताम् ॥५॥
5. sa praviṣya vicitrāṃ tāṃ vihagairabhināditām ,
rājataiḥ kāñcanaiścaiva pādapaiḥ sarvatovṛtām.

5. Having entered that wondrous place, which resonated with the calls of birds and was entirely surrounded by trees of silver and gold.
विहगैर्मृगसंघैश्च विचित्रां चित्रकाननाम् ।
उदितादित्यसंकाशां ददर्श हनुमान् कपिः ॥६॥
6. vihagairmṛgasaṃghaiśca vicitrāṃ citrakānanām ,
uditādityasaṃkāśāṃ dadarśa hanumān kapiḥ.

6. Hanuman, the monkey, saw that wondrous place, variegated with birds and herds of deer, having picturesque forests, and resembling the rising sun.
वृतां नानाविधैर्वृक्षैः पुष्पोपगफलोपगैः ।
कोकिलैर्भृङ्गराजैश्च मत्तैर्नित्यनिषेविताम् ॥७॥
7. vṛtāṃ nānāvidhairvṛkṣaiḥ puṣpopagaphalopagaiḥ ,
kokilairbhṛṅgarājaiśca mattairnityaniṣevitām.

7. (He saw it) surrounded by various kinds of trees bearing both flowers and fruits, and constantly frequented by joyful cuckoos and buzzing king-bees.
प्रहृष्टमनुजे कले मृगपक्षिसमाकुले ।
मत्तबर्हिणसंघुष्टां नानाद्विजगणायुताम् ॥८॥
8. prahṛṣṭamanuje kale mṛgapakṣisamākule ,
mattabarhiṇasaṃghuṣṭāṃ nānādvijagaṇāyutām.

8. In a place delightful to humans, with sweet sounds, and bustling with deer and birds, (he saw it) resonant with the cries of ecstatic peacocks and filled with groups of diverse birds.
मार्गमाणो वरारोहां राजपुत्रीमनिन्दिताम् ।
सुखप्रसुप्तान् विहगान्बोधयामास वानरः ॥९॥
9. mārgamāṇo varārohāṃ rājaputrīmaninditām ,
sukhaprasuptān vihagānbodhayāmāsa vānaraḥ.

9. The monkey (Hanuman), searching for the faultless princess with beautiful hips, awakened the comfortably sleeping birds.
उत्पतद्भिर्द्विजगणैः पक्षैः सालाः समाहताः ।
अनेकवर्णा विविधा मुमुचुः पुष्पवृष्टयः ॥१०॥
10. utpatadbhirdvijagaṇaiḥ pakṣaiḥ sālāḥ samāhatāḥ ,
anekavarṇā vividhā mumucuḥ puṣpavṛṣṭayaḥ.

10. Struck by the wings of flocks of birds flying upwards, the śāla trees released diverse showers of flowers of many colors.
पुष्पावकीर्णः शुशुभे हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः ।
अशोकवनिकामध्ये यथा पुष्पमयो गिरिः ॥११॥
11. puṣpāvakīrṇaḥ śuśubhe hanumānmārutātmajaḥ ,
aśokavanikāmadhye yathā puṣpamayo giriḥ.

11. Hanuman, the son of Maruta (Vāyu), covered with flowers, shone splendidly in the middle of the Aśoka grove, like a mountain made of flowers.
दिशः सर्वाभिदावन्तं वृक्षषण्डगतं कपिम् ।
दृष्ट्वा सर्वाणि भूतानि वसन्त इति मेनिरे ॥१२॥
12. diśaḥ sarvābhidāvantaṃ vṛkṣaṣaṇḍagataṃ kapim ,
dṛṣṭvā sarvāṇi bhūtāni vasanta iti menire.
12. diśaḥ sarvābhidāvantam vṛkṣakhaṇḍagatam kapim
dṛṣṭvā sarvāṇi bhūtāni vasantaḥ iti menire

12. Having seen the monkey (Hanuman) running in all directions, moving among the tree groves, all creatures thought, "This is spring!"
वृक्षेभ्यः पतितैः पुष्पैरवकीर्णा पृथग्विधैः ।
रराज वसुधा तत्र प्रमदेव विभूषिता ॥१३॥
13. vṛkṣebhyaḥ patitaiḥ puṣpairavakīrṇā pṛthagvidhaiḥ ,
rarāja vasudhā tatra pramadeva vibhūṣitā.

13. The ground, covered with various kinds of flowers fallen from the trees, shone splendidly there, like a beautiful woman adorned with ornaments.
तरस्विना ते तरवस्तरसाभिप्रकम्पिताः ।
कुसुमानि विचित्राणि ससृजुः कपिना तदा ॥१४॥
14. tarasvinā te taravastarasābhiprakampitāḥ ,
kusumāni vicitrāṇi sasṛjuḥ kapinā tadā.

kusumāni vicitrāṇi sasṛjuḥ kapinā tadā

14. Then, those trees, greatly shaken by the mighty (tarasvin) monkey (kapi) with his force, shed various wonderful flowers.
निर्धूतपत्रशिखराः शीर्णपुष्पफलद्रुमाः ।
निक्षिप्तवस्त्राभरणा धूर्ता इव पराजिताः ॥१५॥
15. nirdhūtapatraśikharāḥ śīrṇapuṣpaphaladrumāḥ ,
nikṣiptavastrābharaṇā dhūrtā iva parājitāḥ.

15. The trees, their leaf-covered tops stripped bare and their flowers and fruits fallen, appeared like defeated gamblers who have cast aside their clothes and ornaments.
हनूमता वेगवता कम्पितास्ते नगोत्तमाः ।
पुष्पपर्णफलान्याशु मुमुचुः पुष्पशालिनः ॥१६॥
16. hanūmatā vegavatā kampitāste nagottamāḥ ,
puṣpaparṇaphalānyāśu mumucuḥ puṣpaśālinaḥ.

puṣpaparṇaphalāni āśu mumucuḥ puṣpaśālinaḥ

16. Those excellent, flower-bearing trees (nagottama), shaken by the swift (vegavat) Hanūmān, quickly shed their flowers, leaves, and fruits.
विहंगसंघैर्हीनास्ते स्कन्धमात्राश्रया द्रुमाः ।
बभूवुरगमाः सर्वे मारुतेनेव निर्धुताः ॥१७॥
17. vihaṃgasaṃghairhīnāste skandhamātrāśrayā drumāḥ ,
babhūvuragamāḥ sarve māruteneva nirdhutāḥ.
17. vihaṅgasaṅghaiḥ hīnāḥ te skandhamātrāśrayāḥ drumāḥ
babhūvuḥ agamāḥ sarve mārutena iva nirdhutāḥ
17. Those trees, deprived of their flocks of birds and left with only their main branches as support, all became desolate and unfrequented, as if completely shaken clean by the wind.
विधूतकेशी युवतिर्यथा मृदितवर्णिका ।
निष्पीतशुभदन्तौष्ठी नखैर्दन्तैश्च विक्षता ॥१८॥
18. vidhūtakeśī yuvatiryathā mṛditavarṇikā ,
niṣpītaśubhadantauṣṭhī nakhairdantaiśca vikṣatā.
18. vidhūtakeśī yuvatiḥ yathā mṛditavarṇikā
niṣpītaśubhadantauṣṭhī nakhaíḥ dantaíḥ ca vikṣatā
18. Just as a young woman with dishevelled hair and smeared cosmetics, whose beautiful teeth and lips are marked (as if from passionate kissing) and who is lacerated by nails and teeth.
तथा लाङ्गूलहस्तैश्च चरणाभ्यां च मर्दिता ।
बभूवाशोकवनिका प्रभग्नवरपादपा ॥१९॥
19. tathā lāṅgūlahastaiśca caraṇābhyāṃ ca marditā ,
babhūvāśokavanikā prabhagnavarapādapā.
19. tathā lāṅgūlahastaiḥ ca caraṇābhyām ca marditā
babhūva aśokavanikā prabhagnavarapadapā
19. Similarly, the (aśoka) grove, with its finest trees completely shattered, became ravaged by (Hanuman's) tail, hands, and feet.
महालतानां दामानि व्यधमत्तरसा कपिः ।
यथा प्रावृषि विन्ध्यस्य मेघजालानि मारुतः ॥२०॥
20. mahālatānāṃ dāmāni vyadhamattarasā kapiḥ ,
yathā prāvṛṣi vindhyasya meghajālāni mārutaḥ.
20. mahālatānām dāmāni vyadhamat tarasā kapiḥ
yathā prāvṛṣi vindhyasya meghajālāni mārutaḥ
20. The monkey (Hanuman) forcibly scattered the masses of great creepers, just as the wind scatters the cloud formations of the Vindhya (mountain) during the rainy season.
स तत्र मणिभूमीश्च राजतीश्च मनोरमाः ।
तथा काञ्चनभूमीश्च विचरन्ददृशे कपिः ॥२१॥
21. sa tatra maṇibhūmīśca rājatīśca manoramāḥ ,
tathā kāñcanabhūmīśca vicarandadṛśe kapiḥ.

tathā kāñcanabhūmīḥ ca vicaran dadṛśe kapiḥ

21. Wandering there, the monkey saw enchanting floors made of jewels, and silver, and similarly, golden floors.
वापीश्च विविधाकाराः पूर्णाः परमवारिणा ।
महार्हैर्मणिसोपानैरुपपन्नास्ततस्ततः ॥२२॥
22. vāpīśca vividhākārāḥ pūrṇāḥ paramavāriṇā ,
mahārhairmaṇisopānairupapannāstatastataḥ.

mahārhaiḥ maṇisopānaiḥ upapannāḥ tataḥ tataḥ

22. He also saw pools of various shapes, filled with excellent water, and equipped everywhere with precious jeweled steps.
मुक्ताप्रवालसिकता स्फटिकान्तरकुट्टिमाः ।
काञ्चनैस्तरुभिश्चित्रैस्तीरजैरुपशोभिताः ॥२३॥
23. muktāpravālasikatā sphaṭikāntarakuṭṭimāḥ ,
kāñcanaistarubhiścitraistīrajairupaśobhitāḥ.

kāñcanaiḥ tarubhiḥ citraiḥ tīrajaiḥ upaśobhitāḥ

23. Their sand was made of pearls and corals, their inner pavements of crystal, and they were adorned by splendid golden trees growing on their banks.
फुल्लपद्मोत्पलवनाश्चक्रवाकोपकूजिताः ।
नत्यूहरुतसंघुष्टा हंससारसनादिताः ॥२४॥
24. phullapadmotpalavanāścakravākopakūjitāḥ ,
natyūharutasaṃghuṣṭā haṃsasārasanāditāḥ.

24. They had groves of blooming lotuses and water lilies, were cooed at by cakravāka birds, reverberated with the calls of nātūyha birds, and resounded with the cries of geese and cranes.
दीर्घाभिर्द्रुमयुक्ताभिः सरिद्भिश्च समन्ततः ।
अमृतोपमतोयाभिः शिवाभिरुपसंस्कृताः ॥२५॥
25. dīrghābhirdrumayuktābhiḥ saridbhiśca samantataḥ ,
amṛtopamatoyābhiḥ śivābhirupasaṃskṛtāḥ.

amṛtopamatoyābhiḥ śivābhiḥ upasaṃskṛtāḥ

25. The land was adorned and purified from all sides by long, tree-lined, auspicious rivers whose waters resembled nectar.
लताशतैरवतताः सन्तानकसमावृताः ।
नानागुल्मावृतवनाः करवीरकृतान्तराः ॥२६॥
26. latāśatairavatatāḥ santānakasamāvṛtāḥ ,
nānāgulmāvṛtavanāḥ karavīrakṛtāntarāḥ.

26. It was covered with hundreds of creepers and surrounded by "santānaka" (a celestial tree/creeper); its forests were enveloped by various bushes, and its inner spaces filled with "karavīra" (oleander) plants.
ततो ऽम्बुधरसंकाशं प्रवृद्धशिखरं गिरिम् ।
विचित्रकूटं कूटैश्च सर्वतः परिवारितम् ॥२७॥
27. tato'mbudharasaṃkāśaṃ pravṛddhaśikharaṃ girim ,
vicitrakūṭaṃ kūṭaiśca sarvataḥ parivāritam.
27. tataḥ ambudharasaṃkāśam pravṛddhaśikharam girim
vicitrakūṭam kūṭaiḥ ca sarvataḥ parivāritam
27. tataḥ ambudharasaṃkāśam pravṛddhaśikharam
vicitrakūṭam sarvataḥ kūṭaiḥ ca parivāritam girim
27. Then (he saw) a mountain resembling a cloud, with towering and wonderfully varied peaks, and surrounded on all sides by other peaks.
शिलागृहैरवततं नानावृक्षैः समावृतम् ।
ददर्श कपिशार्दूलो रम्यं जगति पर्वतम् ॥२८॥
28. śilāgṛhairavatataṃ nānāvṛkṣaiḥ samāvṛtam ,
dadarśa kapiśārdūlo ramyaṃ jagati parvatam.
28. śilāgṛhaiḥ avatatam nānāvṛkṣaiḥ samāvṛtam
dadarśa kapiśārdūlaḥ ramyam jagati parvatam

28. The tiger among monkeys (kapiśārdūla) then saw that beautiful mountain, unique in the world, which was covered with rock-caves and completely enveloped by various trees.
ददर्श च नगात्तस्मान्नदीं निपतितां कपिः ।
अङ्कादिव समुत्पत्य प्रियस्य पतितां प्रियाम् ॥२९॥
29. dadarśa ca nagāttasmānnadīṃ nipatitāṃ kapiḥ ,
aṅkādiva samutpatya priyasya patitāṃ priyām.
29. dadarśa ca nagāt tasmāt nadīm nipatitām kapiḥ
| aṅkāt iva samutpatya priyasya patitām priyām

29. And the monkey (Hanuman) saw a river falling from that mountain, just like a beloved woman who has fallen from her lover's lap after suddenly rising.
जले निपतिताग्रैश्च पादपैरुपशोभिताम् ।
वार्यमाणामिव क्रुद्धां प्रमदां प्रियबन्धुभिः ॥३०॥
30. jale nipatitāgraiśca pādapairupaśobhitām ,
vāryamāṇāmiva kruddhāṃ pramadāṃ priyabandhubhiḥ.
30. jale nipatitāgraiḥ ca pādapaiḥ upaśobhitām |
vāryamāṇām iva kruddhām pramadām priyabandhubhiḥ
30. jale nipatitāgraiḥ pādapaiḥ ca upaśobhitām

30. It (the river) was adorned by trees whose tops had fallen into the water, appearing like an angry young woman being restrained by her dear relatives.
पुनरावृत्ततोयां च ददर्श स महाकपिः ।
प्रसन्नामिव कान्तस्य कान्तां पुनरुपस्थिताम् ॥३१॥
31. punarāvṛttatoyāṃ ca dadarśa sa mahākapiḥ ,
prasannāmiva kāntasya kāntāṃ punarupasthitām.

prasannām iva kāntasya kāntām punar upasthitām
31. sa mahākapiḥ ca punar āvṛttatoyām dadarśa
kāntasya prasannām punar upasthitām kāntām iva
31. And that great monkey (Hanuman) saw the river, whose waters had become calm again, like a beloved woman, now appeased, having returned to her lover.
तस्यादूरात् स पद्मिन्यो नानाद्विजगणायुताः ।
ददर्श कपिशार्दूलो हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः ॥३२॥
32. tasyādūrāt sa padminyo nānādvijagaṇāyutāḥ ,
dadarśa kapiśārdūlo hanumānmārutātmajaḥ.
32. tasyāḥ adūrāt sa padminyaḥ nānādvijagaṇāyutāḥ
| dadarśa kapiśārdūlaḥ hanumān mārutātmajaḥ
32. sa hanumān kapiśārdūlaḥ mārutātmajaḥ tasyāḥ
adūrāt nānādvijagaṇāyutāḥ padminyaḥ dadarśa
32. Not far from that (river), Hanuman, the foremost among monkeys, the son of Vayu, saw lotus ponds frequented by various flocks of birds.
कृत्रिमां दीर्घिकां चापि पूर्णां शीतेन वारिणा ।
मणिप्रवरसोपानां मुक्तासिकतशोभिताम् ॥३३॥
33. kṛtrimāṃ dīrghikāṃ cāpi pūrṇāṃ śītena vāriṇā ,
maṇipravarasopānāṃ muktāsikataśobhitām.

vāriṇā maṇipravarasopānām muktāsikataśobhitām

33. He saw an artificial pond, full of cold water, with steps made of excellent jewels and adorned with pearl-like sand.
विविधैर्मृगसंघैश्च विचित्रां चित्रकाननाम् ।
प्रासादैः सुमहद्भिश्च निर्मितैर्विश्वकर्मणा ।
काननैः कृत्रिमैश्चापि सर्वतः समलंकृताम् ॥३४॥
34. vividhairmṛgasaṃghaiśca vicitrāṃ citrakānanām ,
prāsādaiḥ sumahadbhiśca nirmitairviśvakarmaṇā ,
kānanaiḥ kṛtrimaiścāpi sarvataḥ samalaṃkṛtām.
34. vividhaiḥ mṛgasaṃghaiḥ ca vicitrām
citrakānanām prāsādaiḥ sumahadbhiḥ
ca nirmitaiḥ viśvakarmaṇā kānanaiḥ
kṛtrimaiḥ ca api sarvataḥ samalaṅkṛtām
34. vicitrām citrakānanām vividhaiḥ
mṛgasaṃghaiḥ ca sumahadbhiḥ prāsādaiḥ
ca viśvakarmaṇā nirmitaiḥ kṛtrimaiḥ
kānanaiḥ ca api sarvataḥ samalaṅkṛtām
34. It was variegated and had charming groves, filled with diverse herds of deer. It was also adorned on all sides with extremely grand palaces built by (the divine architect) Viśvakarmā, and with artificial groves.
ये के चित् पादपास्तत्र पुष्पोपगफलोपगाः ।
सच्छत्राः सवितर्दीकाः सर्वे सौवर्णवेदिकाः ॥३५॥
35. ye ke cit pādapāstatra puṣpopagaphalopagāḥ ,
sacchatrāḥ savitardīkāḥ sarve sauvarṇavedikāḥ.

35. All the trees there, whichever they might be, were bearing flowers and fruits, and were endowed with parasols, canopies, and golden platforms.
लताप्रतानैर्बहुभिः पर्णैश्च बहुभिर्वृताम् ।
काञ्चनीं शिंशुपामेकां ददर्श स महाकपिः ॥३६॥
36. latāpratānairbahubhiḥ parṇaiśca bahubhirvṛtām ,
kāñcanīṃ śiṃśupāmekāṃ dadarśa sa mahākapiḥ.

kāñcanīm śiṃśupām ekām dadarśa sa mahākapiḥ
36. saḥ mahākapiḥ latāpratānaiḥ bahubhiḥ ca bahubhiḥ
parṇaiḥ vṛtām ekām kāñcanīm śiṃśupām dadarśa
36. That great monkey (mahākapi), Hanumān, saw a single golden śiṃśupā tree, covered by numerous vine-tendrils and abundant leaves.
सो ऽपश्यद्भूमिभागांश्च गर्तप्रस्रवणानि च ।
सुवर्णवृक्षानपरान्ददर्श शिखिसंनिभान् ॥३७॥
37. so'paśyadbhūmibhāgāṃśca gartaprasravaṇāni ca ,
suvarṇavṛkṣānaparāndadarśa śikhisaṃnibhān.
37. सः अपश्यत् भूमिभागान् च गर्तप्रस्रवणानि च
सुवर्णवृक्षान् अपरान् ददर्श शिखिसंनिभान्
37. सः भूमिभागान् च गर्तप्रस्रवणानि च अपरान्
शिखिसंनिभान् सुवर्णवृक्षान् च अपश्यत् ददर्श
37. He observed various regions of land, including hollows and springs, and he also saw other golden trees that shone like flames.
तेषां द्रुमाणां प्रभया मेरोरिव महाकपिः ।
अमन्यत तदा वीरः काञ्चनो ऽस्मीति वानरः ॥३८॥
38. teṣāṃ drumāṇāṃ prabhayā meroriva mahākapiḥ ,
amanyata tadā vīraḥ kāñcano'smīti vānaraḥ.
38. तेषाम् द्रुमाणाम् प्रभया मेरोः इव महाकपिः
अमन्यत तदा वीरः काञ्चनः अस्मि इति वानरः
38. तदा तेषाम् द्रुमाणाम् प्रभया वीरः महाकपिः
वानरः मेरोः इव काञ्चनः अस्मि इति अमन्यत
38. Then, by the brilliance of those trees, the valiant great monkey (Hanuman) felt as if he himself had become golden, like Mount Meru.
तां काञ्चनैस्तरुगणैर्मारुतेन च वीजिताम् ।
किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषां दृष्ट्वा विस्मयमागमत् ॥३९॥
39. tāṃ kāñcanaistarugaṇairmārutena ca vījitām ,
kiṅkiṇīśatanirghoṣāṃ dṛṣṭvā vismayamāgamat.
39. ताम् काञ्चनैः तरुगणैः मारुतेन च वीजिताम्
किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषाम् दृष्ट्वा विस्मयम् आगमत्
39. दृष्ट्वा ताम् काञ्चनैः तरुगणैः मारुतेन च
वीजिताम् किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषाम् सः विस्मयम् आगमत्
39. Upon seeing that place, fanned by the wind (māruta) amidst its multitude of golden trees and resonant with the tinkling sound of hundreds of tiny bells, he was struck with wonder.
सुपुष्पिताग्रां रुचिरां तरुणाङ्कुरपल्लवाम् ।
तामारुह्य महावेगः शिंशपां पर्णसंवृताम् ॥४०॥
40. supuṣpitāgrāṃ rucirāṃ taruṇāṅkurapallavām ,
tāmāruhya mahāvegaḥ śiṃśapāṃ parṇasaṃvṛtām.
40. सुपुष्पिताग्राम् रुचिराम् तरुणाङ्कुरपल्लवाम्
ताम् आरुह्य महावेगः शिंशपाम् पर्णसंवृताम्
40. महावेगः सुपुष्पिताग्राम् रुचिराम् तरुणाङ्कुरपल्लवाम्
पर्णसंवृताम् ताम् शिंशपाम् आरुह्य
40. The immensely swift (Hanuman) ascended that charming śimśapā tree, which was lush with beautifully flowered tips, fresh sprouts, young leaves, and dense foliage.
इतो द्रक्ष्यामि वैदेहीं राम दर्शनलालसाम् ।
इतश्चेतश्च दुःखार्तां संपतन्तीं यदृच्छया ॥४१॥
41. ito drakṣyāmi vaidehīṃ rāma darśanalālasām ,
itaścetaśca duḥkhārtāṃ saṃpatantīṃ yadṛcchayā.
41. itaḥ drakṣyāmi vaidehīm rāma darśanalālasām
itaś cetaś ca duḥkhārtām saṃpatantīm yadṛcchayā
41. From here, I will see Vaidehi, longing for a sight of Rāma. Distressed by sorrow, she wanders aimlessly here and there.
अशोकवनिका चेयं दृढं रम्या दुरात्मनः ।
चम्पकैश्चन्दनैश्चापि बकुलैश्च विभूषिता ॥४२॥
42. aśokavanikā ceyaṃ dṛḍhaṃ ramyā durātmanaḥ ,
campakaiścandanaiścāpi bakulaiśca vibhūṣitā.
42. aśokavanikā ca iyam dṛḍham ramyā durātmanaḥ
campakaiḥ ca candanaiḥ ca api bakulaiḥ ca vibhūṣitā
42. And this Ashoka grove, exceedingly beautiful, belongs to the evil-minded Rāvaṇa. It is adorned with Campaka, Sandalwood, and Bakula trees.
इयं च नलिनी रम्या द्विजसंघनिषेविता ।
इमां सा राममहिषी नूनमेष्यति जानकी ॥४३॥
43. iyaṃ ca nalinī ramyā dvijasaṃghaniṣevitā ,
imāṃ sā rāmamahiṣī nūnameṣyati jānakī.
43. iyam ca nalinī ramyā dvijasaṃghaniṣevitā
imām sā rāmamahiṣī nūnam eṣyati jānakī
43. This beautiful lotus pond, frequented by flocks of birds, Janaki (Sītā), Rāma's chief queen, will surely come to it.
सा राम राममहिषी राघवस्य प्रिया सदा ।
वनसंचारकुशला नूनमेष्यति जानकी ॥४४॥
44. sā rāma rāmamahiṣī rāghavasya priyā sadā ,
vanasaṃcārakuśalā nūnameṣyati jānakī.
44. sā rāma rāmamahiṣī rāghavasya priyā sadā
vanasaṃcārakuśalā nūnam eṣyati jānakī
44. She, Rāma's chief queen, ever dear to Rāghava (Rāma), skilled in wandering in the forest, Janaki (Sītā), will surely come.
अथ वा मृगशावाक्षी वनस्यास्य विचक्षणा ।
वनमेष्यति सा चेह रामचिन्तानुकर्शिता ॥४५॥
45. atha vā mṛgaśāvākṣī vanasyāsya vicakṣaṇā ,
vanameṣyati sā ceha rāmacintānukarśitā.
45. atha vā mṛgaśāvākṣī vanasya asya vicakṣaṇā
vanam eṣyati sā ca iha rāmacintānukarśitā
45. atha vā sā mṛgaśāvākṣī asya vanasya vicakṣaṇā
rāmacintānukarśitā ca iha vanam eṣyati
45. Or perhaps, the deer-eyed one (Sita), experienced with this forest, will come here to the forest, emaciated by her constant thoughts of Rāma.
रामशोकाभिसंतप्ता सा देवी वामलोचना ।
वनवासरता नित्यमेष्यते वनचारिणी ॥४६॥
46. rāmaśokābhisaṃtaptā sā devī vāmalocanā ,
vanavāsaratā nityameṣyate vanacāriṇī.
46. rāmaśokābhisantaptā sā devī vāmalocanā
vanavāsarata nityam eṣyate vanacāriṇī
46. sā devī vāmalocanā rāmaśokābhisantaptā
vanavāsarata vanacāriṇī nityam eṣyate
46. Tormented by grief for Rāma, that goddess-like lady with beautiful eyes, devoted to forest dwelling, will always come as a forest wanderer.
वनेचराणां सततं नूनं स्पृहयते पुरा ।
रामस्य दयिता भार्या जनकस्य सुता सती ॥४७॥
47. vanecarāṇāṃ satataṃ nūnaṃ spṛhayate purā ,
rāmasya dayitā bhāryā janakasya sutā satī.
47. vanacarāṇām satatam nūnam spṛhayate purā
rāmasya dayitā bhāryā janakasya sutā satī
47. nūnam purā rāmasya dayitā bhāryā janakasya
sutā satī satatam vanacarāṇām spṛhayate
47. Surely, in the past, Rāma's beloved wife, the virtuous daughter of Janaka, constantly longed for the forest dwellers.
संध्याकालमनाः श्यामा ध्रुवमेष्यति जानकी ।
नदीं चेमां शिवजलां संध्यार्थे वरवर्णिनी ॥४८॥
48. saṃdhyākālamanāḥ śyāmā dhruvameṣyati jānakī ,
nadīṃ cemāṃ śivajalāṃ saṃdhyārthe varavarṇinī.
48. sandhyākālamanāḥ śyāmā dhruvam eṣyati jānakī
nadīm ca imām śivajalām sandhyārthe varavarṇinī
48. jānakī śyāmā varavarṇinī sandhyākālamanāḥ dhruvam
sandhyārthe imām śivajalām nadīm ca eṣyati
48. Janakī (Sita), the dark-complexioned and beautiful woman, whose mind is set on the evening ritual, will surely come to this river with auspicious waters for her evening prayers.
तस्याश्चाप्यनुरूपेयमशोकवनिका शुभा ।
शुभा या पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य पत्नी रामस्य संमिता ॥४९॥
49. tasyāścāpyanurūpeyamaśokavanikā śubhā ,
śubhā yā pārthivendrasya patnī rāmasya saṃmitā.
49. tasyāḥ ca api anurūpā iyam aśokavanikā śubhā
śubhā yā pārthivendrasya patnī rāmasya saṃmitā
49. Iyam śubhā aśokavanikā tasyāḥ ca api anurūpā.
Yā śubhā pārthivendrasya rāmasya patnī saṃmitā.
49. This beautiful Ashoka grove is indeed suitable for her, who is the auspicious wife of the king (Rama) and comparable to him.
यदि जिवति सा देवी ताराधिपनिभानना ।
आगमिष्यति सावश्यमिमां शिवजलां नदीम् ॥५०॥
50. yadi jivati sā devī tārādhipanibhānanā ,
āgamiṣyati sāvaśyamimāṃ śivajalāṃ nadīm.
50. yadi jīvati sā devī tārādhipanibhānanā
āgamiṣyati sā avaśyam imām śivajalām nadīm
50. Yadi sā devī tārādhipanibhānanā jīvati,
(tarhi) sā avaśyam imām śivajalām nadīm āgamiṣyati.
50. If that goddess, whose face resembles the moon, is still alive, she will certainly come to this river with auspicious waters.
एवं तु मत्वा हनुमान्महात्मा प्रतीक्षमाणो मनुजेन्द्रपत्नीम् ।
अवेक्षमाणश्च ददर्श सर्वं सुपुष्पिते पर्णघने निलीनः ॥५१॥
51. evaṃ tu matvā hanumānmahātmā pratīkṣamāṇo manujendrapatnīm ,
avekṣamāṇaśca dadarśa sarvaṃ supuṣpite parṇaghane nilīnaḥ.
51. evam tu matvā hanumān mahātmā pratīkṣamāṇaḥ manujendropatnīm
avekṣamāṇaḥ ca dadarśa sarvam supuṣpite parṇaghane nilīnaḥ
51. Evam tu matvā,
mahātmā hanumān manujendropatnīm pratīkṣamāṇaḥ,
supuṣpite parṇaghane nilīnaḥ ca sarvam dadarśa avekṣamāṇaḥ.
51. Having thought thus, the great-souled (mahātmā) Hanuman, while waiting for the wife of the king of men, hidden in the densely flowered foliage, observed everything.
