1. sa dadarśāsane rāmo niṣaṇṇaṃ pitaraṃ śubhe ,

Rāma saw his father, who was seated on an auspicious seat and accompanied by Kaikeyī, looking miserable with a withered face.
स पितुश्चरणौ पूर्वमभिवाद्य विनीतवत् ।
ततो ववन्दे चरणौ कैकेय्याः सुसमाहितः ॥२॥

2. sa pituścaraṇau pūrvamabhivādya vinītavat ,

First, he humbly saluted his father's feet, and then, being very composed, he saluted Kaikeyī's feet.
रामेत्युक्त्वा च वचनं वाष्पपर्याकुलेक्षणः ।
शशाक नृपतिर्दीनो नेक्षितुं नाभिभाषितुम् ॥३॥

3. rāmetyuktvā ca vacanaṃ vāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ ,
śaśāka nṛpatirdīno nekṣituṃ nābhibhāṣitum.

And having uttered the word 'Rama', the distressed king, with eyes agitated by tears, was unable either to look (at him) or to speak (to him).
तदपूर्वं नरपतेर्दृष्ट्वा रूपं भयावहम् ।
रामो ऽपि भयमापन्नः पदा स्पृष्ट्वेव पन्नगम् ॥४॥

4. tadapūrvaṃ narapaterdṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ bhayāvaham ,

tat apūrvam narapateḥ dṛṣṭvā rūpam bhayāvaham |

Having seen that unprecedented and terrifying appearance of the king, Rama also became afraid, as if one had accidentally stepped on a serpent.
इन्द्रियैरप्रहृष्टैस्तं शोकसंतापकर्शितम् ।
निःश्वसन्तं महाराजं व्यथिताकुलचेतसं ॥५॥

5. indriyairaprahṛṣṭaistaṃ śokasaṃtāpakarśitam ,
niḥśvasantaṃ mahārājaṃ vyathitākulacetasaṃ.

indriyaiḥ aprahṛṣṭaiḥ tam śokasaṃtāpakarśitam

With senses ungladdened, emaciated by grief and agony, sighing heavily, and with an agitated and troubled mind – (thus was) that great king.
ऊर्मि मालिनमक्षोभ्यं क्षुभ्यन्तमिव सागरम् ।
उपप्लुतमिवादित्यमुक्तानृतमृषिं यथा ॥६॥

6. ūrmi mālinamakṣobhyaṃ kṣubhyantamiva sāgaram ,
upaplutamivādityamuktānṛtamṛṣiṃ yathā.

ūrmi mālinam akṣobhyam kṣubhyantam iva sāgaram

He was like an ocean, though usually unagitated (akṣobhya), now appearing disturbed, with its garland of waves; like the sun (āditya) during an eclipse; or like a sage (ṛṣi) to whom a falsehood (anṛta) has been spoken.
अचिन्त्यकल्पं हि पितुस्तं शोकमुपधारयन् ।
बभूव संरब्धतरः समुद्र इव पर्वणि ॥७॥

7. acintyakalpaṃ hi pitustaṃ śokamupadhārayan ,
babhūva saṃrabdhataraḥ samudra iva parvaṇi.

Indeed, perceiving that almost unimaginable grief of his father, he became even more agitated, like the ocean at the time of the full or new moon.
चिन्तयामास च तदा रामः पितृहिते रतः ।
किंस्विदद्यैव नृपतिर्न मां प्रत्यभिनन्दति ॥८॥

8. cintayāmāsa ca tadā rāmaḥ pitṛhite rataḥ ,
kiṃsvidadyaiva nṛpatirna māṃ pratyabhinandati.

ca tadā pitṛhite rataḥ rāmaḥ cintayāmāsa.

And then Rama, devoted to his father's welfare, wondered, 'Why indeed today does the king not greet me with his usual warmth/approval?'
अन्यदा मां पिता दृष्ट्वा कुपितो ऽपि प्रसीदति ।
तस्य मामद्य संप्रेक्ष्य किमायासः प्रवर्तते ॥९॥

9. anyadā māṃ pitā dṛṣṭvā kupito'pi prasīdati ,
tasya māmadya saṃprekṣya kimāyāsaḥ pravartate.

On other occasions, even when angry, my father becomes pleased upon seeing me. So today, after seeing me, what kind of distress arises in him?
स दीन इव शोकार्तो विषण्णवदनद्युतिः ।
कैकेयीमभिवाद्यैव रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१०॥

10. sa dīna iva śokārto viṣaṇṇavadanadyutiḥ ,

Appearing miserable and afflicted by sorrow, with a dejected facial glow, Rāma spoke these words immediately after saluting Kaikeyī.
कच्चिन्मया नापराद्धमज्ञानाद् येन मे पिता ।
कुपितस्तन्ममाचक्ष्व त्वं चैवैनं प्रसादय ॥११॥

11. kaccinmayā nāparāddhamajñānād yena me pitā ,
kupitastanmamācakṣva tvaṃ caivainaṃ prasādaya.

kaccit mayā ajñānāt na aparāddham yena me pitā kupitaḥ

11.
I hope I have not committed any offense due to ignorance, because of which my father is angry. Please tell me what it is, and you yourself appease him.
विवर्णवदनो दीनो न हि मामभिभाषते ।
शारीरो मानसो वापि कच्चिदेनं न बाधते ।
संतापो वाभितापो वा दुर्लभं हि सदा सुखम् ॥१२॥
शारीरो मानसो वापि कच्चिदेनं न बाधते ।
संतापो वाभितापो वा दुर्लभं हि सदा सुखम् ॥१२॥
12. vivarṇavadano dīno na hi māmabhibhāṣate ,
śārīro mānaso vāpi kaccidenaṃ na bādhate ,
saṃtāpo vābhitāpo vā durlabhaṃ hi sadā sukham.
śārīro mānaso vāpi kaccidenaṃ na bādhate ,
saṃtāpo vābhitāpo vā durlabhaṃ hi sadā sukham.

vivarṇa-vadanaḥ dīnaḥ na hi mām
abhibhāṣate śārīraḥ mānasaḥ vā api
kaccit enam na bādhate saṃtāpaḥ vā
abhitāpaḥ vā durlabham hi sadā sukham
abhibhāṣate śārīraḥ mānasaḥ vā api
kaccit enam na bādhate saṃtāpaḥ vā
abhitāpaḥ vā durlabham hi sadā sukham
12.
saḥ vivarṇa-vadanaḥ dīnaḥ hi mām na abhibhāṣate.
kaccit śārīraḥ vā mānasaḥ api (rogaḥ) enam na bādhate? vā saṃtāpaḥ vā abhitāpaḥ (enam na bādhate)? hi sukham sadā durlabham.
kaccit śārīraḥ vā mānasaḥ api (rogaḥ) enam na bādhate? vā saṃtāpaḥ vā abhitāpaḥ (enam na bādhate)? hi sukham sadā durlabham.
12.
With a pale and dejected face, he indeed does not speak to me. I hope no physical or mental affliction troubles him, nor any internal distress or external torment? For happiness is indeed always rare to find.
कच्चिन्न किं चिद्भरते कुमारे प्रियदर्शने ।
शत्रुघ्ने वा महासत्त्वे मातॄणां वा ममाशुभम् ॥१३॥

13. kaccinna kiṃ cidbharate kumāre priyadarśane ,
śatrughne vā mahāsattve mātṝṇāṃ vā mamāśubham.

kaccit na kim cit bharate kumāre priyadarśane
śatrughne vā mahā-sattve mātṝṇām vā mama aśubham

kaccit kim cit aśubham na bharate kumāre priyadarśane
vā mahā-sattve śatrughne? vā mātṝṇām vā mama (aśubham)?
vā mahā-sattve śatrughne? vā mātṝṇām vā mama (aśubham)?
13.
I hope there is no misfortune concerning Prince Bharata, the handsome one, or the great-souled Shatrughna? Or any ill-omen for my mothers or for me?
अतोषयन्महाराजमकुर्वन् वा पितुर्वचः ।
मुहूर्तमपि नेच्छेयं जीवितुं कुपिते नृपे ॥१४॥

14. atoṣayanmahārājamakurvan vā piturvacaḥ ,
muhūrtamapi neccheyaṃ jīvituṃ kupite nṛpe.

I would not wish to live even for a moment if I were to displease the great king or fail to obey my father's word, especially with the king being angry.
यतोमूलं नरः पश्येत् प्रादुर्भावमिहात्मनः ।
कथं तस्मिन्न वर्तेत प्रत्यक्षे सति दैवते ॥१५॥

15. yatomūlaṃ naraḥ paśyet prādurbhāvamihātmanaḥ ,
kathaṃ tasminna varteta pratyakṣe sati daivate.

How can a person fail to act (respectfully) towards that manifest deity, from whom they perceive the origin of their own self (ātman) in this world?
कच्चित्ते परुषं किं चिदभिमानात् पिता मम ।
उक्तो भवत्या कोपेन यत्रास्य लुलितं मनः ॥१६॥
उक्तो भवत्या कोपेन यत्रास्य लुलितं मनः ॥१६॥
16. kaccitte paruṣaṃ kiṃ cidabhimānāt pitā mama ,
ukto bhavatyā kopena yatrāsya lulitaṃ manaḥ.

16.
I hope that my father was not spoken to harshly by you, due to pride or anger, which has caused his mind to be disturbed.
एतदाचक्ष्व मे देवि तत्त्वेन परिपृच्छतः ।
किंनिमित्तमपूर्वो ऽयं विकारो मनुजाधिपे ॥१७॥

17. etadācakṣva me devi tattvena paripṛcchataḥ ,

17.
O Lady, tell me this truly, as I inquire thoroughly: what is the cause of this unprecedented disturbance (vikāra) in the king?
अहं हि वचनाद् राज्ञः पतेयमपि पावके ।
भक्षयेयं विषं तीक्ष्णं मज्जेयमपि चार्णवे ।
नियुक्तो गुरुणा पित्रा नृपेण च हितेन च ॥१८॥
भक्षयेयं विषं तीक्ष्णं मज्जेयमपि चार्णवे ।
नियुक्तो गुरुणा पित्रा नृपेण च हितेन च ॥१८॥
18. ahaṃ hi vacanād rājñaḥ pateyamapi pāvake ,
bhakṣayeyaṃ viṣaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ majjeyamapi cārṇave ,
niyukto guruṇā pitrā nṛpeṇa ca hitena ca.
bhakṣayeyaṃ viṣaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ majjeyamapi cārṇave ,
niyukto guruṇā pitrā nṛpeṇa ca hitena ca.
18.
ahaṃ hi vacanāt rājñaḥ pateyam api
pāvake | bhakṣayeyaṃ viṣam tīkṣṇam
majjeyam api ca arṇave | niyuktaḥ
guruṇā pitrā nṛpeṇa ca hitena ca
pāvake | bhakṣayeyaṃ viṣam tīkṣṇam
majjeyam api ca arṇave | niyuktaḥ

18.
ahaṃ hi rājñaḥ vacanāt pāvake api
pateyam tīkṣṇam viṣam bhakṣayeyam
arṇave ca api majjeyam guruṇā
pitrā ca hitena nṛpeṇa ca niyuktaḥ
pateyam tīkṣṇam viṣam bhakṣayeyam
arṇave ca api majjeyam guruṇā
pitrā ca hitena nṛpeṇa ca niyuktaḥ
18.
Indeed, by the command of the king, I would even fall into fire, consume potent poison, and plunge into the ocean; for I am enjoined by my preceptor (guru), my father, and the benevolent king.
तद्ब्रूहि वचनं देवि राज्ञो यदभिकाङ्क्षितम् ।
करिष्ये प्रतिजाने च रामो द्विर्नाभिभाषते ॥१९॥

19. tadbrūhi vacanaṃ devi rājño yadabhikāṅkṣitam ,
kariṣye pratijāne ca rāmo dvirnābhibhāṣate.

19.
Therefore, O goddess (devi), tell me that command of the king which is desired. I will fulfill it, and I make this solemn promise; Rama does not speak twice (meaning his word is absolute).
तमार्जवसमायुक्तमनार्या सत्यवादिनम् ।
उवाच रामं कैकेयी वचनं भृशदारुणम् ॥२०॥

20. tamārjavasamāyuktamanāryā satyavādinam ,
uvāca rāmaṃ kaikeyī vacanaṃ bhṛśadāruṇam.

20.
The ignoble (anāryā) Kaikeyī spoke extremely harsh words to Rama, who was endowed with sincerity and spoke only the truth.
पुरा देवासुरे युद्धे पित्रा ते मम राघव ।
रक्षितेन वरौ दत्तौ सशल्येन महारणे ॥२१॥

O Raghava, long ago, in the great war between the gods and asuras (devasura), your father, having been wounded (saśalyena) and protected by me, granted me two boons.

O Rāghava, at that time, I requested from the king Bharata's anointment and your immediate departure to the Daṇḍaka forest.

आत्मानं च नररेष्ठ मम वाक्यमिदं शृणु ॥२३॥

O best among men, if you wish to make your father true to his vow, and yourself (ātman) also, then listen to these words of mine.
स निदेशे पितुस्तिष्ठ यथा तेन प्रतिश्रुतम् ।
त्वयारण्यं प्रवेष्टव्यं नव वर्षाणि पञ्च च ॥२४॥

You must abide by your father's command, just as it was promised by him. You are to enter the forest for nine and five years.

Abandoning this coronation and wearing matted hair and bark garments, you must reside for seven and seven years in the Daṇḍaka forest.

Let Bharata rule this earth from the city of Kosala, an earth replete with various jewels, horses, chariots, and elephants.

The foe-slayer (amitraghna) Rama, having heard that disagreeable word which was akin to death, was not distressed and spoke this to Kaikeyi.

So be it. I will go to the forest to reside, as you wish, wearing matted hair and bark clothes, upholding the king's vow.

However, I wish to know this: why does the unconquerable lord of the earth (mahīpati), the vanquisher of foes (arindama), not greet me as he did before?
मन्युर्न च त्वया कार्यो देवि ब्रूहि तवाग्रतः ।
यास्यामि भव सुप्रीता वनं चीरजटाधरः ॥३०॥

O Goddess, you should not be angry. Speak your command before me. I will go to the forest, wearing bark and matted locks, and in doing so, you will be greatly pleased.
हितेन गुरुणा पित्रा कृतज्ञेन नृपेण च ।
नियुज्यमानो विश्रब्धं किं न कुर्यादहं प्रियम् ॥३१॥

When commanded by a benevolent teacher (guru), a father, or a grateful king, what dear duty would I not confidently perform?

32. alīkaṃ mānasaṃ tvekaṃ hṛdayaṃ dahatīva me ,

Indeed, one mental falsehood alone burns my heart, namely, that the king himself did not tell me about Bharata's coronation.

हृष्टो भ्रात्रे स्वयं दद्यां भरतायाप्रचोदितः ॥३३॥

aham hi sītām rājyam ca prāṇān iṣṭān dhanāni ca

Indeed, I would gladly give Sītā, the kingdom, my cherished life, and my riches to my brother Bharata of my own accord, without being prompted.
किं पुनर्मनुजेन्द्रेण स्वयं पित्रा प्रचोदितः ।
तव च प्रियकामार्थं प्रतिज्ञामनुपालयन् ॥३४॥

What more (can be said)? He (Rama), impelled by his own father, the king, is fulfilling the promise for the sake of your desire.
तदाश्वासय हीमं त्वं किं न्विदं यन्महीपतिः ।
वसुधासक्तनयनो मन्दमश्रूणि मुञ्चति ॥३५॥

Therefore, you must indeed console him. What is this, that the king, with his eyes fixed on the ground, slowly sheds tears?
गच्छन्तु चैवानयितुं दूताः शीघ्रजवैर्हयैः ।

And indeed, let messengers go immediately on swift horses to bring Bharata from his maternal uncle's family, by the king's command, today itself.

I, this very one, swiftly go from here to the Dandakaranya forest, without questioning my father's command, to reside for fourteen years.

Delighted, Kaikeyī, having heard those words of Rama and truly believing in his departure, hastened Rama (Rāghava).

Let it be so. Men, as messengers, will go with swift horses to bring Bharata back from his maternal uncle's family.

O Rama, I do not consider a delay suitable for an eager person like you. Therefore, you should go to the forest quickly from here.
व्रीडान्वितः स्वयं यच्च नृपस्त्वां नाभिभाषते ।
नैतत् किं चिन्नरश्रेष्ठ मन्युरेषो ऽपनीयताम् ॥४१॥

41. vrīḍānvitaḥ svayaṃ yacca nṛpastvāṃ nābhibhāṣate ,

And regarding the king himself, who, filled with shame, does not speak to you - this is not significant, O best of men. Let this anger (manyu) be cast aside.
यावत्त्वं न वनं यातः पुरादस्मादभित्वरन् ।

O Rāma, as long as you do not depart quickly for the forest from this city, your father will neither bathe nor eat.

"Alas, what a misery!" thus sighing, the king, overwhelmed by sorrow, fainted and fell onto that gold-adorned couch.

Rāma, too, having raised the king, and urged by Kaikeyī, hastened to go to the forest, like a horse struck by a whip.

Having heard that unpleasant and cruel speech of the ignoble woman, Rāma, his distress gone, spoke these words to Kaikeyī.

O goddess, I am not concerned with worldly gains, nor do I wish to reside in the world [in that manner]. Know me to be like the sages, solely devoted to natural law (dharma).

Whatever might be pleasing to your honor, that I am able to do – even abandoning my very life – that will certainly be accomplished by me in every way.

Indeed, there is no greater observance of natural law (dharma) than this, just as [there is no greater dharma than] service to one's father or the fulfillment of his command.

Even unbidden by your revered husband, I shall dwell in this desolate forest for fourteen years, here, at your word.

O Kaikeyī, surely you do not perceive any virtue in me, considering that you, being more dominant than I, addressed the king in such a way.

As soon as I take leave of my mother and persuade Sītā, I shall depart this very day for the great Daṇḍaka forest.

Bharata should rule the kingdom and serve his father as is proper. In the same way, you too must fulfill your duty; for that, indeed, is the eternal (sanātana) natural law (dharma).

Having heard Rāma's words, the father, intensely afflicted by sorrow (duḥkha), was so overwhelmed that he could not restrain his tears and wailed with a great sound.

Then, the greatly splendid Rama, having bowed at the feet of his unconscious father and of the ignoble Kaikeyi, exited.

That Rama, having performed circumambulation (pradakṣiṇam) of his father and Kaikeyi, exited from those inner chambers and saw his friends and kinsfolk.

लक्ष्मणः परमक्रुद्धः सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः ॥५६॥

His eyes full of tears, Lakshmana, who was extremely enraged and who increased Sumitra's joy, indeed followed him from behind.

Having circumambulated the vessels (bhāṇḍa) meant for the coronation, Rama slowly proceeded, his gaze fixed there, not shifting it.
न चास्य महतीं लक्ष्मीं राज्यनाशो ऽपकर्षति ।
लोककान्तस्य कान्तत्वं शीतरश्मेरिव क्षपा ॥५८॥

The loss of his kingdom does not diminish his great fortune (lakṣmī), just as night does not diminish the loveliness of the moon, which is beloved by all people.

No mental agitation (cittavikriyā) is observed in him, who desires to go to the forest and is abandoning his kingdom, just as it is not seen in one who has transcended all worldly attachments.

Bearing his sorrow mentally and restraining his senses, the self-possessed (ātmavān) man entered his mother's dwelling, having to deliver unpleasant news.

Upon entering the dwelling, which was filled with exceeding joy, and observing the calamity that had arrived, Rama showed no agitation (vikriyā), fearing misfortune (vipatti) for his loved ones.
