अष्टौ बभूवुर्वीरस्य तस्यामात्या यशस्विनः ।
शुचयश्चानुरक्ताश्च राजकृत्येषु नित्यशः ॥१॥

1. Eight illustrious ministers served that heroic king. They were pure, loyal, and constantly devoted to performing royal duties.
धृष्टिर्जयन्तो विजयः सिद्धार्थो अर्थसाधकः ।
अशोको मन्त्रपालश्च सुमन्त्रश्चाष्टमो ऽभवत् ॥२॥
2. dhṛṣṭirjayanto vijayaḥ siddhārtho arthasādhakaḥ ,
aśoko mantrapālaśca sumantraścāṣṭamo'bhavat.

2. Dhṛṣṭi, Jayanta, Vijaya, Siddhārtha, Arthasādhaka, Aśoka, and Mantrapāla, with Sumantra as the eighth, were present.
ऋत्विजौ द्वावभिमतौ तस्यास्तामृषिसत्तमौ ।
वसिष्ठो वामदेवश्च मन्त्रिणश्च तथापरे ॥३॥
3. ṛtvijau dvāvabhimatau tasyāstāmṛṣisattamau ,
vasiṣṭho vāmadevaśca mantriṇaśca tathāpare.

3. His two esteemed chief priests, the best among sages, were Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva. Likewise, there were other ministers.
श्रीमन्तश्च महात्मानः शास्त्रज्ञा दृढविक्रमाः ।
कीर्तिमन्तः प्रणिहिता यथावचनकारिणः ॥४॥
4. śrīmantaśca mahātmānaḥ śāstrajñā dṛḍhavikramāḥ ,
kīrtimantaḥ praṇihitā yathāvacanakāriṇaḥ.

4. They were glorious, noble-minded, knowledgeable in scriptures, of firm valor, renowned, attentive, and acted according to instructions.
तेजःक्षमायशःप्राप्ताः स्मितपूर्वाभिभाषिणः ।
क्रोधात् कामार्थहेतोर्वा न ब्रूयुरनृतं वचः ॥५॥
5. tejaḥkṣamāyaśaḥprāptāḥ smitapūrvābhibhāṣiṇaḥ ,
krodhāt kāmārthahetorvā na brūyuranṛtaṃ vacaḥ.

krodhāt kāmārthahetoḥ vā na brūyuḥ anṛtam vacaḥ

5. They had attained brilliance, patience, and fame, and spoke with a preceding smile. They would not utter an untruth, whether from anger or for the sake of desire or material gain.
तेषामविदितं किं चित् स्वेषु नास्ति परेषु वा ।
क्रियमाणं कृतं वापि चारेणापि चिकीर्षितम् ॥६॥
6. teṣāmaviditaṃ kiṃ cit sveṣu nāsti pareṣu vā ,
kriyamāṇaṃ kṛtaṃ vāpi cāreṇāpi cikīrṣitam.
6. teṣām aviditam kim cit sveṣu na asti pareṣu vā
kriyamāṇam kṛtam vā api cāreṇa api cikīrṣitam
6. teṣām sveṣu pareṣu vā kim cit kriyamāṇam kṛtam
vā api cāreṇa api cikīrṣitam aviditam na asti
6. Nothing, whether being done, already accomplished, or merely intended, remains unknown to them - neither concerning their own people nor their adversaries, even through the use of spies.
कुशला व्यवहारेषु सौहृदेषु परीक्षिताः ।
प्राप्तकालं यथा दण्डं धारयेयुः सुतेष्वपि ॥७॥
7. kuśalā vyavahāreṣu sauhṛdeṣu parīkṣitāḥ ,
prāptakālaṃ yathā daṇḍaṃ dhārayeyuḥ suteṣvapi.
7. kuśalāḥ vyavahāreṣu sauhṛdeṣu parīkṣitāḥ
prāptakālam yathā daṇḍam dhārayeyuḥ suteṣu api
7. vyavahāreṣu kuśalāḥ sauhṛdeṣu parīkṣitāḥ te

7. They should be skilled in governance and proven trustworthy in their alliances. They ought to apply punishment at the appropriate time, even to their own sons.
कोशसंग्रहणे युक्ता बलस्य च परिग्रहे ।
अहितं चापि पुरुषं न विहिंस्युरदूषकम् ॥८॥
8. kośasaṃgrahaṇe yuktā balasya ca parigrahe ,
ahitaṃ cāpi puruṣaṃ na vihiṃsyuradūṣakam.
8. kośasaṃgrahaṇe yuktāḥ balasya ca parigrahe
ahitam ca api puruṣam na vihiṃsyuḥ adūṣakam
8. kośasaṃgrahaṇe balasya ca parigrahe yuktāḥ te
adūṣakam ahitam puruṣam api ca na vihiṃsyuḥ
8. They should be engaged in accumulating wealth and maintaining the army. Moreover, they should not harm even a person (puruṣa) who is an adversary if that person is faultless.
वीराश्च नियतोत्साहा राजशास्त्रमनुष्ठिताः ।
शुचीनां रक्षितारश्च नित्यं विषयवासिनाम् ॥९॥
9. vīrāśca niyatotsāhā rājaśāstramanuṣṭhitāḥ ,
śucīnāṃ rakṣitāraśca nityaṃ viṣayavāsinām.
9. vīrāḥ ca niyatotsāhāḥ rājaśāstram anuṣṭhitāḥ
śucīnām rakṣitāraḥ ca nityam viṣayavāsinām
9. te vīrāḥ ca niyatotsāhāḥ rājaśāstram anuṣṭhitāḥ
ca nityam śucīnām viṣayavāsinām rakṣitāraḥ
9. They are brave and possessed of resolute energy, diligently practicing the principles of statecraft. They are also constant protectors of the honest inhabitants of the realm.
ब्रह्मक्षत्रमहिंसन्तस्ते कोशं समपूरयन् ।
सुतीक्ष्णदण्डाः संप्रेक्ष्य पुरुषस्य बलाबलम् ॥१०॥
10. brahmakṣatramahiṃsantaste kośaṃ samapūrayan ,
sutīkṣṇadaṇḍāḥ saṃprekṣya puruṣasya balābalam.
10. brahmakṣatram ahiṃsantaḥ te kośam samapūrayan
sutīkṣṇadaṇḍāḥ samprekṣya puruṣasya balābalam
10. te brahmakṣatram ahiṃsantaḥ kośam samapūrayan
puruṣasya balābalam samprekṣya sutīkṣṇadaṇḍāḥ
10. They did not harm the brahmin and kṣatriya classes, and thus they filled the treasury. Their scepters (punishments) were very strict, as they carefully assessed the strength and weakness of each person.
शुचीनामेकबुद्धीनां सर्वेषां संप्रजानताम् ।
नासीत् पुरे वा राष्ट्रे वा मृषावादी नरः क्व चित् ॥११॥
11. śucīnāmekabuddhīnāṃ sarveṣāṃ saṃprajānatām ,
nāsīt pure vā rāṣṭre vā mṛṣāvādī naraḥ kva cit.
11. śucīnām ekabuddhīnām sarveṣām samprajānatām na
āsīt pure vā rāṣṭre vā mṛṣāvādī naraḥ kvacit
11. mṛṣāvādī naraḥ pure vā rāṣṭre vā śucīnām
ekabuddhīnām sarveṣām samprajānatām kvacit na āsīt
11. Among all the pure, single-minded, and well-informed people, there was no man anywhere, neither in the city nor in the state, who spoke falsely.
कश्चिन्न दुष्टस्तत्रासीत् परदाररतिर्नरः ।
प्रशान्तं सर्वमेवासीद् राष्ट्रं पुरवरं च तत् ॥१२॥
12. kaścinna duṣṭastatrāsīt paradāraratirnaraḥ ,
praśāntaṃ sarvamevāsīd rāṣṭraṃ puravaraṃ ca tat.
12. kaścit na duṣṭaḥ tatra āsīt paradāraratiḥ naraḥ
praśāntam sarvam eva āsīt rāṣṭram puravaram ca tat
12. tatra kaścit naraḥ duṣṭaḥ paradāraratiḥ na āsīt
tat rāṣṭram ca puravaram sarvam eva praśāntam āsīt
12. No man there was wicked, nor was there any man who delighted in other men's wives. That kingdom and excellent city were indeed entirely peaceful.
सुवाससः सुवेशाश्च ते च सर्वे सुशीलिनः ।
हितार्थं च नरेन्द्रस्य जाग्रतो नयचक्षुषा ॥१३॥
13. suvāsasaḥ suveśāśca te ca sarve suśīlinaḥ ,
hitārthaṃ ca narendrasya jāgrato nayacakṣuṣā.
13. suvāsasaḥ suveśāḥ ca te ca sarve suśīlinaḥ
hitārtham ca narendrasya jāgrataḥ nayacakṣuṣā
13. te ca sarve suvāsasaḥ ca suveśāḥ ca suśīlinaḥ
jāgrataḥ ca narendrasya hitārtham nayacakṣuṣā
13. All of them were well-dressed, handsome, and virtuous. And they were vigilant for the king's welfare, through the eye of (their) policy.
गुरौ गुणगृहीताश्च प्रख्याताश्च पराक्रमैः ।
विदेशेष्वपि विज्ञाताः सर्वतो बुद्धिनिश्चयात् ॥१४॥
14. gurau guṇagṛhītāśca prakhyātāśca parākramaiḥ ,
videśeṣvapi vijñātāḥ sarvato buddhiniścayāt.
14. gurau guṇagṛhītāḥ ca prakhyātāḥ ca parākramaiḥ
videśeṣu api vijñātāḥ sarvataḥ buddhiniscayāt

14. They were esteemed by their teachers (guru) for their virtues, famous for their valor, and known even in foreign lands everywhere due to their firm intellectual (buddhi) resolve.
ईदृशैस्तैरमात्यैस्तु राजा दशरथो ऽनघः ।
उपपन्नो गुणोपेतैरन्वशासद्वसुंधराम् ॥१५॥
15. īdṛśaistairamātyaistu rājā daśaratho'naghaḥ ,
upapanno guṇopetairanvaśāsadvasuṃdharām.
15. īdṛśaiḥ taiḥ amātyaiḥ tu rājā daśarathaḥ anaghaḥ
upapannaḥ guṇopetaiḥ anvaśāsat vasundharām
15. tu anaghaḥ rājā daśarathaḥ īdṛśaiḥ taiḥ guṇopetaiḥ
amātyaiḥ upapannaḥ vasundharām anvaśāsat
15. Indeed, the faultless King Daśaratha, attended by such ministers who were endowed with virtues, ruled the earth.
अवेक्षमाणश्चारेण प्रजा धर्मेण रञ्जयन् ।
नाध्यगच्छद्विशिष्टं वा तुल्यं वा शत्रुमात्मनः ॥१६॥
16. avekṣamāṇaścāreṇa prajā dharmeṇa rañjayan ,
nādhyagacchadviśiṣṭaṃ vā tulyaṃ vā śatrumātmanaḥ.
16. avekṣamāṇaḥ cāreṇa prajāḥ dharmeṇa rañjayan na
adhyagacchat viśiṣṭam vā tulyam vā śatrum ātmanaḥ
16. cāreṇa avekṣamāṇaḥ dharmeṇa prajāḥ rañjayan ātmanaḥ
viśiṣṭam vā tulyam vā śatrum na adhyagacchat
16. Observing through his spies, and delighting his subjects (prajā) with (natural) law (dharma), he did not find any enemy, whether superior or equal to himself.
तैर्मन्त्रिभिर्मन्त्रहितैर्निविष्टैर्वृतो ऽनुरक्तैः कुशलैः समर्थैः ।
स पार्थिवो दीप्तिमवाप युक्तस्तेजोमयैर्गोभिरिवोदितो ऽर्कः ॥१७॥
17. tairmantribhirmantrahitairniviṣṭairvṛto'nuraktaiḥ kuśalaiḥ samarthaiḥ ,
sa pārthivo dīptimavāpa yuktastejomayairgobhirivodito'rkaḥ.
17. taiḥ mantribhiḥ mantrahitaiḥ niviṣṭaiḥ
vṛtaḥ anuraktaiḥ kuśalaiḥ samarthaiḥ
saḥ pārthivaḥ dīptim avāpa yuktaḥ
tejomayaiḥ gobhiḥ iva uditaḥ arkaḥ
17. taiḥ mantribhiḥ mantrahitaiḥ niviṣṭaiḥ
anuraktaiḥ kuśalaiḥ samarthaiḥ
vṛtaḥ yuktaḥ saḥ pārthivaḥ dīptim avāpa
tejomayaiḥ gobhiḥ uditaḥ arkaḥ iva
17. Surrounded by those ministers - who were devoted to counsel, steadfast, loyal, skillful, and capable - that king, thus endowed, attained brilliance, just as the rising sun (arka) is endowed with its radiant (tejomaya) rays.
