स दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणं दीनं शून्ये दशरथात्मजः ।
पर्यपृच्छत धर्मात्मा वैदेहीमागतं विना ॥१॥

1. Seeing Lakshmana distressed and in that desolate place, Rama, whose soul was devoted to natural law (dharma), questioned him, as Vaidehi (Sita) had not arrived with him.
प्रस्थितं दण्डकारण्यं या मामनुजगाम ह ।
क्व सा लक्ष्मण वैदेही यां हित्वा त्वमिहागतः ॥२॥
2. prasthitaṃ daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ yā māmanujagāma ha ,
kva sā lakṣmaṇa vaidehī yāṃ hitvā tvamihāgataḥ.
2. prasthitam daṇḍakāraṇyam yā mām anujagāma ha kva
sā lakṣmaṇa vaidehī yām hitvā tvam iha āgataḥ

2. O Lakshmana, where is that Vaidehi (Sita) who indeed followed me when I departed for the Dandaka forest? Having left whom, have you come here?
राज्यभ्रष्टस्य दीनस्य दण्डकान्परिधावतः ।
क्व सा दुःखसहाया मे वैदेही तनुमध्यमा ॥३॥
3. rājyabhraṣṭasya dīnasya daṇḍakānparidhāvataḥ ,
kva sā duḥkhasahāyā me vaidehī tanumadhyamā.

3. Where is that slender-waisted Vaidehi (Sita), my companion in sorrow, who supported me, a distressed one fallen from my kingdom, as I roamed the Dandaka forest?
यां विना नोत्सहे वीर मुहूर्तमपि जीवितुम् ।
क्व सा प्राणसहाया मे सीता सुरसुतोपमा ॥४॥
4. yāṃ vinā notsahe vīra muhūrtamapi jīvitum ,
kva sā prāṇasahāyā me sītā surasutopamā.

4. O hero, without whom I cannot even bear to live for a single moment. Where is that Sita, my life-companion, who resembles a daughter of the gods?
पतित्वममराणां वा पृथिव्याश्चापि लक्ष्मण ।
विना तां तपनीयाभां नेच्छेयं जनकात्मजाम् ॥५॥
5. patitvamamarāṇāṃ vā pṛthivyāścāpi lakṣmaṇa ,
vinā tāṃ tapanīyābhāṃ neccheyaṃ janakātmajām.
5. patitvam amarāṇām vā pṛthivyāḥ ca api lakṣmaṇa
| vinā tām tapanīyābhām na iccheyam janakātmajām
5. lakṣmaṇa amarāṇām vā pṛthivyāḥ ca api patitvam
tām tapanīyābhām janakātmajām vinā na iccheyam
5. O Lakshmana, I would not desire even the lordship over the gods or over the earth without that daughter of Janaka, whose radiance is like molten gold.
कच्चिज्जीवति वैदेही प्राणैः प्रियतरा मम ।
कच्चित् प्रव्राजनं सौम्य न मे मिथ्या भविष्यति ॥६॥
6. kaccijjīvati vaidehī prāṇaiḥ priyatarā mama ,
kaccit pravrājanaṃ saumya na me mithyā bhaviṣyati.
6. kaccit jīvati vaidehī prāṇaiḥ priyatarā mama |
kaccit pravrājanam saumya na me mithyā bhaviṣyati
6. kaccit vaidehī mama prāṇaiḥ priyatarā jīvati

6. I hope Vaidehi, who is dearer to me than my very life, is still alive. And I hope, O gentle one, that my exile (pravrājanam) will not prove to be in vain.
सीतानिमित्तं सौमित्रे मृते मयि गते त्वयि ।
कच्चित् सकामा सुखिता कैकेयी सा भविष्यति ॥७॥
7. sītānimittaṃ saumitre mṛte mayi gate tvayi ,
kaccit sakāmā sukhitā kaikeyī sā bhaviṣyati.
7. sītānimittam saumitre mṛte mayi gate tvayi |
kaccit sakāmā sukhitā kaikeyī sā bhaviṣyati
7. saumitre mayi sītānimittam mṛte tvayi gate ca
kaccit sā kaikeyī sakāmā sukhitā bhaviṣyati
7. O son of Sumitrā, I hope that Kaikeyī will be happy and have her desires fulfilled, should I die for Sītā's sake and you return.
सपुत्रराज्यां सिद्धार्थां मृतपुत्रा तपस्विनी ।
उपस्थास्यति कौसल्या कच्चिन् सौम्य न कैकयीम् ॥८॥
8. saputrarājyāṃ siddhārthāṃ mṛtaputrā tapasvinī ,
upasthāsyati kausalyā kaccin saumya na kaikayīm.
8. saputrarājyām siddhārthām mṛtaputrā tapasvinī |
upasthāsyati kausalyā kaccit saumya na kaikeyīm
8. saumya kaccit mṛtaputrā tapasvinī kausalyā
saputrarājyām siddhārthām kaikeyīm na upasthāsyati
8. O gentle one, I hope that Kaushalyā, who will be a grief-stricken ascetic, having lost her son, will not have to attend upon Kaikeyī, who will have attained her son and the kingdom, and whose objectives (artha) will have been accomplished.
यदि जीवति वैदेही गमिष्याम्याश्रमं पुनः ।
सुवृत्ता यदि वृत्ता सा प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यामि लक्ष्मण ॥९॥
9. yadi jīvati vaidehī gamiṣyāmyāśramaṃ punaḥ ,
suvṛttā yadi vṛttā sā prāṇāṃstyakṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa.
9. yadi jīvati vaidehī gamiṣyāmi āśramam punaḥ
suvṛttā yadi vṛttā sā prāṇān tyakṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa
9. lakṣmaṇa yadi vaidehī jīvati punaḥ āśramam
gamiṣyāmi yadi sā suvṛttā vṛttā prāṇān tyakṣyāmi
9. If Vaidehi lives, I will return to the hermitage. However, Lakshmana, if that chaste lady has perished, I will give up my life.
यदि मामाश्रमगतं वैदेही नाभिभाषते ।
पुनः प्रहसिता सीता विनशिष्यामि लक्ष्मण ॥१०॥
10. yadi māmāśramagataṃ vaidehī nābhibhāṣate ,
punaḥ prahasitā sītā vinaśiṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa.
10. yadi mām āśramagatam vaidehī na abhibhāṣate
punaḥ prahasitā sītā vinaśiṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa
10. lakṣmaṇa yadi āśramagatam mām vaidehī na
abhibhāṣate punaḥ prahasitā sītā vinaśiṣyāmi
10. Lakshmana, if Vaidehi does not speak to me when I return to the hermitage, and Sita is not smiling again, I will perish.
ब्रूहि लक्ष्मण वैदेही यदि जीवति वा न वा ।
त्वयि प्रमत्ते रक्षोभिर्भक्षिता वा तपस्विनी ॥११॥
11. brūhi lakṣmaṇa vaidehī yadi jīvati vā na vā ,
tvayi pramatte rakṣobhirbhakṣitā vā tapasvinī.
11. brūhi lakṣmaṇa vaidehī yadi jīvati vā na vā
tvayi pramatte rakṣobhiḥ bhakṣitā vā tapasvinī
11. lakṣmaṇa brūhi vaidehī yadi jīvati vā na vā vā

11. Lakshmana, tell me if Vaidehi is alive or not. Or was that pitiable lady devoured by demons while you were careless?
सुकुमारी च बाला च नित्यं चादुःखदर्शिनी ।
मद्वियोगेन वैदेही व्यक्तं शोचति दुर्मनाः ॥१२॥
12. sukumārī ca bālā ca nityaṃ cāduḥkhadarśinī ,
madviyogena vaidehī vyaktaṃ śocati durmanāḥ.
12. sukumārī ca bālā ca nityam ca aduḥkhadarśinī
madviyogena vaidehī vyaktam śocati durmanāḥ
12. sukumārī ca bālā ca nityam aduḥkhadarśinī

12. Vaidehi, who is so delicate and young, and has always known no sorrow, is certainly grieving and distressed in mind because of her separation from me.
सर्वथा रक्षसा तेन जिह्मेन सुदुरात्मना ।
वदता लक्ष्मणेत्युच्चैस्तवापि जनितं भयम् ॥१३॥
13. sarvathā rakṣasā tena jihmena sudurātmanā ,
vadatā lakṣmaṇetyuccaistavāpi janitaṃ bhayam.
13. sarvathā rakṣasā tena jihmena sudurātmanā vadatā
lakṣmaṇa iti uccaiḥ tava api janitam bhayam
13. tena jihmena sudurātmanā rakṣasā uccaiḥ lakṣmaṇa
iti vadatā tava api sarvathā bhayam janitam
13. Indeed, that crooked and exceedingly evil-minded demon, by loudly calling out 'Lakṣmaṇa!', caused fear in you too.
श्रुतश्च शङ्के वैदेह्या स स्वरः सदृशो मम ।
त्रस्तया प्रेषितस्त्वं च द्रष्टुं मां शीघ्रमागतः ॥१४॥
14. śrutaśca śaṅke vaidehyā sa svaraḥ sadṛśo mama ,
trastayā preṣitastvaṃ ca draṣṭuṃ māṃ śīghramāgataḥ.
14. śrutaḥ ca śaṅke vaidehyā saḥ svaraḥ sadṛśaḥ mama |
trastayā preṣitaḥ tvam ca draṣṭum mām śīghram āgataḥ
14. ca śaṅke vaidehyā saḥ mama sadṛśaḥ svaraḥ śrutaḥ ca
trastayā tvam mām draṣṭum śīghram preṣitaḥ āgataḥ
14. I suspect that Vaidehī (Sītā) heard that voice which was similar to mine. Frightened, she quickly sent you to come and see me.
सर्वथा तु कृतं कष्टं सीतामुत्सृजता वने ।
प्रतिकर्तुं नृशंसानां रक्षसां दत्तमन्तरम् ॥१५॥
15. sarvathā tu kṛtaṃ kaṣṭaṃ sītāmutsṛjatā vane ,
pratikartuṃ nṛśaṃsānāṃ rakṣasāṃ dattamantaram.
15. sarvathā tu kṛtam kaṣṭam sītām utsṛjatā vane |
pratikartum nṛśaṃsānām rakṣasām dattam antaram
15. tu sarvathā vane sītām utsṛjatā kaṣṭam kṛtam
nṛśaṃsānām rakṣasām pratikartum antaram dattam
15. Indeed, by abandoning Sītā in the forest, great harm has been done. An opportunity has been given to the cruel demons (rakṣasa) to retaliate.
दुःखिताः खरघातेन राक्षसाः पिशिताशनाः ।
तैः सीता निहता घोरैर्भविष्यति न संशयः ॥१६॥
16. duḥkhitāḥ kharaghātena rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ ,
taiḥ sītā nihatā ghorairbhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ.
16. duḥkhitāḥ kharaghātena rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ |
taiḥ sītā nihatā ghoraiḥ bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
16. kharaghātena duḥkhitāḥ piśitāśanāḥ rākṣasāḥ
taiḥ ghoraiḥ sītā nihatā bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
16. The flesh-eating demons (rakṣasa), distressed by the slaying of Khara, will certainly have killed Sītā – there is no doubt about this.
अहो ऽस्मि व्यसने मग्नः सर्वथा रिपुनाशन ।
किं त्विदानीं करिष्यामि शङ्के प्राप्तव्यमीदृशम् ॥१७॥
17. aho'smi vyasane magnaḥ sarvathā ripunāśana ,
kiṃ tvidānīṃ kariṣyāmi śaṅke prāptavyamīdṛśam.
17. aho asmi vyasane magnaḥ sarvathā ripunāśana
kim tu idānīm kariṣyāmi śaṅke prāptavyam īdṛśam
17. aho ripunāśana asmi vyasane sarvathā magnaḥ
idānīm kim tu kariṣyāmi īdṛśam prāptavyam śaṅke
17. Alas, O destroyer of foes, I am completely immersed in distress (vyasana). What shall I do now? I fear that such a calamity is destined for me.
इति सीतां वरारोहां चिन्तयन्नेव राघवः ।
आजगाम जनस्थानं त्वरया सहलक्ष्मणः ॥१८॥
18. iti sītāṃ varārohāṃ cintayanneva rāghavaḥ ,
ājagāma janasthānaṃ tvarayā sahalakṣmaṇaḥ.

ājagāma janasthānam tvarayā sahalakṣmaṇaḥ

18. Thus, while constantly thinking of Sita, the one with beautiful hips, Rama (rāghava) quickly arrived at Janasthana, accompanied by Lakshmana.
विगर्हमाणो ऽनुजमार्तरूपं क्षुधा श्रमाच्चैव पिपासया च ।
विनिःश्वसञ् शुष्कमुखो विषण्णः प्रतिश्रयं प्राप्य समीक्ष्य शून्यम् ॥१९॥
19. vigarhamāṇo'nujamārtarūpaṃ kṣudhā śramāccaiva pipāsayā ca ,
viniḥśvasañ śuṣkamukho viṣaṇṇaḥ pratiśrayaṃ prāpya samīkṣya śūnyam.
19. vigarhamāṇaḥ anujam ārtarūpam
kṣudhā śramāt ca eva pipāsayā ca
viniḥśvasan śuṣkamukhaḥ viṣaṇṇaḥ
pratiśrayam prāpya samīkṣya śūnyam

19. Reproaching his younger brother (anuja) for his distressed appearance – caused by hunger, exhaustion, and thirst – Rama, sighing deeply, with a dry face, and utterly dejected, reached the hermitage and found it empty.
स्वमाश्रमं संप्रविगाह्य वीरो विहारदेशाननुसृत्य कांश्चित् ।
एतत्तदित्येव निवासभूमौ प्रहृष्टरोमा व्यथितो बभूव ॥२०॥
20. svamāśramaṃ saṃpravigāhya vīro vihāradeśānanusṛtya kāṃścit ,
etattadityeva nivāsabhūmau prahṛṣṭaromā vyathito babhūva.

vihāradesān anusṛtya kāṃścit
etat tat iti eva nivāsabhūmau
prahṛṣṭaromā vyathitaḥ babhūva

20. The hero (vīra), having thoroughly entered his own hermitage (āśrama) and searched through some recreational spots, exclaimed 'This is that!', and thereupon, in the dwelling place, his hair stood on end, and he became utterly distressed.
