प्राप्य राजा पुरः प्राप्तं सिन्धुमुद्धुरकन्धरम् ।
मध्याह्नतपनान्तेन कोपेन विततोऽभवत् ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: When the king met Sindhu, who had arrived before him with an arrogant posture, he became overwhelmed with a rage as intense as the midday sun.
धनुरास्फालयामास चिरारावितदिङ्मुखम् ।
कल्पान्तपवनास्फोट इव मेरुगिरेस्तटम् ॥ २ ॥
dhanurāsphālayāmāsa cirārāvitadiṅmukham ,
kalpāntapavanāsphoṭa iva merugirestaṭam 2
2. dhanuḥ āsphālayāmāsa cirārāvitadiṅmukham
kalpāntapavanāsphoṭaḥ iva merugireḥ taṭam
2. cirārāvitadiṅmukham dhanuḥ āsphālayāmāsa,
kalpāntapavanāsphoṭaḥ merugireḥ taṭam iva.
2. He twanged his bow, filling all directions with its prolonged resounding noise, just as the wind of cosmic dissolution might strike and make the slopes of Mount Meru reverberate.
विससर्जोर्जितो राजा प्रलयार्कः करानिव ।
तूणीररजनीबद्धाः शिलीमुखपरम्पराः ॥ ३ ॥
visasarjorjito rājā pralayārkaḥ karāniva ,
tūṇīrarajanībaddhāḥ śilīmukhaparamparāḥ 3
3. visasarja ūrjitaḥ rājā pralayārkaḥ karān
iva tūṇīrarajanībaddhāḥ śilīmukhaparamparāḥ
3. ūrjitaḥ rājā,
pralayārkaḥ karān iva,
tūṇīrarajanībaddhāḥ śilīmukhaparamparāḥ visasarja.
3. The mighty king unleashed continuous streams of arrows, as if they had been held captive in the night of his quiver, much like the sun of cosmic dissolution emits its destructive rays.
एक एव विनिर्याति गुणात्तस्य शिलीमुखः ।
सहस्रं भवति व्योम्नि गच्छन्पतति लक्षशः ॥ ४ ॥
eka eva viniryāti guṇāttasya śilīmukhaḥ ,
sahasraṃ bhavati vyomni gacchanpatati lakṣaśaḥ 4
4. ekaḥ eva viniryāti guṇāt tasya śilīmukhaḥ
sahasram bhavati vyomni gacchan patati lakṣaśaḥ
4. tasya guṇāt ekaḥ eva śilīmukhaḥ viniryāti,
sahasram vyomni gacchan bhavati,
lakṣaśaḥ patati
4. Just one arrow issues forth from his bowstring, and as it travels through the sky, it becomes a thousand, then falls in hundreds of thousands.
मुसला नाम ते बाणा मुसलाकृतयोऽम्बरम् ।
छादयामासुरुन्नादाः कल्पान्ताशनयो यथा ॥ ६ ॥
musalā nāma te bāṇā musalākṛtayo'mbaram ,
chādayāmāsurunnādāḥ kalpāntāśanayo yathā 6
6. musalā nāma te bāṇāḥ musalākṛtayaḥ ambaram
chādayāmāsuḥ unnādāḥ kalpāntāśanayaḥ yathā

6. Those arrows, named "musala" (mace-like), with their mace-like forms and roaring sounds, covered the sky just like thunderbolts at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa).
रेजुः कनकनाराचराजयो व्योम्नि सस्वनाः ।
रसन्त्यः कल्पवातार्ताः पतन्त्य इव तारकाः ॥ ७ ॥
rejuḥ kanakanārācarājayo vyomni sasvanāḥ ,
rasantyaḥ kalpavātārtāḥ patantya iva tārakāḥ 7
7. rejuḥ kanakanārācarājayaḥ vyomni sasvanāḥ
rasantyaḥ kalpavātārtāḥ patantyaḥ iva tārakāḥ
7. kalpavātārtāḥ rasantyaḥ sasvanāḥ kanakanārācarājayaḥ

7. Rows of golden arrows, roaring and sounding, shone in the sky, like falling stars tormented by the winds of the cosmic cycle (kalpa).
विदूरथाच्छरासारा अजस्रमभिनिर्ययुः ।
अब्धेरिव पयःपूराः सूर्यादिव मरीचयः ॥ ८ ॥
vidūrathāccharāsārā ajasramabhiniryayuḥ ,
abdheriva payaḥpūrāḥ sūryādiva marīcayaḥ 8
8. vidūrathāt śarāsārāḥ ajasram abhiniryayuḥ
abdheḥ iva payaḥpūrāḥ sūryāt iva marīcayaḥ
8. vidūrathāt śarāsārāḥ ajasram abhiniryayuḥ,
abdheḥ payaḥpūrāḥ iva,
sūryāt marīcayaḥ iva
8. Torrents of arrows issued forth incessantly from Vidūratha, just like streams of water from the ocean or rays from the sun.
प्रचण्डपवनोद्धूतात्पुष्पाणीव महातरोः ।
अयःपिण्डादिवोत्तप्तात्ताडितात्कणपङ्कयः ॥ ९ ॥
pracaṇḍapavanoddhūtātpuṣpāṇīva mahātaroḥ ,
ayaḥpiṇḍādivottaptāttāḍitātkaṇapaṅkayaḥ 9
9. pracaṇḍapavanoddhūtāt puṣpāṇi iva mahātaroḥ
ayaḥpiṇḍāt iva uttaptāt tāḍitāt kaṇapaṅkayaḥ
9. pracaṇḍapavanoddhūtāt mahātaroḥ puṣpāṇi iva,
uttaptāt tāḍitāt ayaḥpiṇḍāt iva kaṇapaṅkayaḥ (vikīryante).
9. Just as flowers are scattered from a great tree violently shaken by a fierce wind, and just as rows of sparks fly from a heated, struck lump of iron.
धारा वर्षमुच इव सीकरा इव निर्झरात् ।
तत्पुराग्निमहादाहात्स्फुलिङ्गा इव भासुराः ॥ १० ॥
dhārā varṣamuca iva sīkarā iva nirjharāt ,
tatpurāgnimahādāhātsphuliṅgā iva bhāsurāḥ 10
10. dhārāḥ varṣamucaḥ iva sīkarāḥ iva nirjharāt
tatpurāgnimahādāhāt sphuliṅgāḥ iva bhāsurāḥ
10. (tāḥ) varṣamucaḥ dhārāḥ iva,
nirjharāt sīkarāḥ iva,
tatpurāgnimahādāhāt bhāsurāḥ sphuliṅgāḥ iva (abhavan).
10. Like streams pouring from a rain-cloud, and like spray from a waterfall; so too, like brilliant sparks from the city's great destructive fire.
तयोश्चटचटास्फोटं शृण्वत्कोदण्डयोर्द्वयोः ।
बलद्वयमभूत्प्रेक्षामूकं शान्त इवाम्बुधिः ॥ ११ ॥
tayoścaṭacaṭāsphoṭaṃ śṛṇvatkodaṇḍayordvayoḥ ,
baladvayamabhūtprekṣāmūkaṃ śānta ivāmbudhiḥ 11
11. tayoḥ caṭacaṭāsphoṭam śṛṇvat kodaṇḍayoḥ dvayoḥ
baladvayam abhūt prekṣāmūkam śāntaḥ iva ambudhiḥ
11. dvayoḥ tayoḥ kodaṇḍayoḥ caṭacaṭāsphoṭam śṛṇvat baladvayam śāntaḥ ambudhiḥ iva prekṣāmūkam abhūt.
11. Hearing the sharp, cracking sound of those two bows, the two armies became speechless with awe, like a calm ocean.
वहन्ति स्म शरापूरा गङ्गापूरा इवाम्बरे ।
सिन्धोरभिमुखं युद्धे घर्घरारावरंहसः ॥ १२ ॥
vahanti sma śarāpūrā gaṅgāpūrā ivāmbare ,
sindhorabhimukhaṃ yuddhe ghargharārāvaraṃhasaḥ 12
12. vahanti sma śarāpūrāḥ gaṅgāpūrāḥ iva ambare
sindhoḥ abhimukham yuddhe ghargharārāvaraṃhasaḥ
12. yuddhe śarāpūrāḥ ambare gaṅgāpūrāḥ iva,
ghargharārāvaraṃhasaḥ,
sindhoḥ abhimukham vahanti sma.
12. In battle, streams of arrows flowed forth in the sky like the rushing floods of the Ganges, with a roaring sound and great speed, heading towards the ocean.
कचत्कनकनाराचशरवर्षा अनारतम् ।
वहच्छवशवाशब्द निर्ययुर्धनुरम्बुदात् ॥ १३ ॥
kacatkanakanārācaśaravarṣā anāratam ,
vahacchavaśavāśabda niryayurdhanurambudāt 13
13. kacatkanakanārācaśaravarṣāḥ anāratam
vahacchavaśavāśabda niryayuḥ dhanurambudāt

13. Incessant showers of glistening golden iron arrows, producing a sound like the carrying away of many corpses, issued forth from the cloud-like bow.
बाणमन्दाकिनीपूरं व्रजन्तं सिन्धुपूरणे ।
वातायनात्तमालोक्य लीला तत्पुरवासिनी ॥ १४ ॥
bāṇamandākinīpūraṃ vrajantaṃ sindhupūraṇe ,
vātāyanāttamālokya līlā tatpuravāsinī 14
14. bāṇamandākinīpūram vrajantam sindhupūraṇe
vātāyanāt tam ālokya līlā tatpuravāsinī

14. Līlā, who resided in that city, observing from the window that flood of arrows (likened to the Gaṅgā), which was advancing as if to fill the ocean...
तेन बाणसमूहेन जयमाशङ्क्य भर्तरि ।
उवाच वाक्यमानन्दविकसन्मुखपङ्कजा ॥ १५ ॥
tena bāṇasamūhena jayamāśaṅkya bhartari ,
uvāca vākyamānandavikasanmukhapaṅkajā 15
15. tena bāṇasamūhena jayam āśaṅkya bhartari
uvāca vākyam ānandavikasatmukhapaṅkajā
15. ānandavikasatmukhapaṅkajā (sā Līlā) tena
bāṇasamūhena bhartari jayam āśaṅkya vākyam uvāca
15. Having expected victory for her husband (bhartṛ) because of that multitude of arrows, Līlā, whose lotus-face was blooming with joy, spoke these words.
जय देवि जयत्येष नाथोऽस्माकं विलोकय ।
किंचानेन शरौघेण मेरुरप्येति चूर्णताम् ॥ १६ ॥
jaya devi jayatyeṣa nātho'smākaṃ vilokaya ,
kiṃcānena śaraugheṇa merurapyeti cūrṇatām 16
16. jaya devi jayati eṣaḥ nāthaḥ asmākam vilokaya
kim ca anena śaraugheṇa meruḥ api eti cūrṇatām
16. devi,
jaya! vilokaya! eṣaḥ asmākam nāthaḥ jayati.
kim ca anena śaraugheṇa meruḥ api cūrṇatām eti.
16. "Victory, O Goddess! Behold, our lord triumphs! And moreover, by this flood of arrows, even Mount Meru would be reduced to dust."
तस्यामेव वदन्त्या तु घनस्नेहरवाकुलम् ।
प्रेक्षणव्यग्रयोर्देव्योर्हसन्त्योर्मानुषीं हृदा ॥ १७ ॥
tasyāmeva vadantyā tu ghanasneharavākulam ,
prekṣaṇavyagrayordevyorhasantyormānuṣīṃ hṛdā 17
17. tasyām eva vadantyā tu ghana-sneha-rava ākulam
prekṣaṇavyagrayoḥ devyoḥ hasantyoḥ mānuṣīm hṛdā
17. vadyantyāḥ tasyām eva tu ghana-sneha-rava ākulam
devyoḥ prekṣaṇavyagrayoḥ hasantyoḥ hṛdā mānuṣīm
17. Indeed, while she (one of the gopīs) was speaking, agitated by an outpouring of deep affection, the two goddesses, intently watching and laughing, did so with a human heart.
तच्छरार्णवमामत्तमपिबत्सिन्धुवाडवः ।
शरोष्मणा ह्यगस्त्येन जह्नुर्मन्दाकिनीमिव ॥ १८ ॥
taccharārṇavamāmattamapibatsindhuvāḍavaḥ ,
śaroṣmaṇā hyagastyena jahnurmandākinīmiva 18
18. tat śara-arṇavam ā-mattam apibat sindhu-bāḍavaḥ
śara-uṣmaṇā hi agastyena jahnuḥ mandākinīm iva
18. sindhu-bāḍavaḥ tat ā-mattam śara-arṇavam śara-uṣmaṇā
apibat hi agastyena mandākinīm iva jahnuḥ
18. Indeed, the submarine fire (sindhubāḍava), with its arrow-like heat, drank that agitated ocean of arrows, just as Agastya (drank the ocean) and Jahnu (drank) the Mandākinī river.
बाणवर्षेण कणशस्तं सायकमहाघनम् ।
छित्त्वा तनुरजः कृत्वा चिक्षेप गगनार्णवे ॥ १९ ॥
bāṇavarṣeṇa kaṇaśastaṃ sāyakamahāghanam ,
chittvā tanurajaḥ kṛtvā cikṣepa gaganārṇave 19
19. bāṇa-varṣeṇa kaṇaśas tam sāyakamahāghanam
chittvā tanu-rajaḥ kṛtvā cikṣepa gagana-arṇave
19. bāṇa-varṣeṇa tam sāyakamahāghanam kaṇaśas
chittvā tanu-rajaḥ kṛtvā gagana-arṇave cikṣepa
19. With a shower of arrows, having cut that great cloud of arrows into particles, and having reduced it to fine dust, he threw it into the ocean of the sky.
यथा दीपस्य शान्तस्य न परिज्ञायते गतिः ।
तस्य सायकसङ्घस्य न विज्ञाता तथा गतिः ॥ २० ॥
yathā dīpasya śāntasya na parijñāyate gatiḥ ,
tasya sāyakasaṅghasya na vijñātā tathā gatiḥ 20
20. yathā dīpasya śāntasya na parijñāyate gatiḥ
tasya sāyaka-saṅghasya na vijñātā tathā gatiḥ
20. yathā śāntasya dīpasya gatiḥ na parijñāyate,
tathā tasya sāyaka-saṅghasya gatiḥ na vijñātā
20. Just as the course of an extinguished lamp is not known, so too, the trajectory of that multitude of arrows was not perceived.
तं छित्त्वा सायकासारं शरीराम्बुधरं घनम् ।
व्योम्नि प्रसारयामास रसाच्छवशतान्वितम् ॥ २१ ॥
taṃ chittvā sāyakāsāraṃ śarīrāmbudharaṃ ghanam ,
vyomni prasārayāmāsa rasācchavaśatānvitam 21
21. tam chittvā sāyakāsāram śarīrāmbudharam ghanam
vyomni prasārayāmāsa rasāt śavaśatānvitam
21. rasāt tam sāyakāsāram ghanam śarīrāmbudharam
chittvā śavaśatānvitam vyomni prasārayāmāsa
21. With great fury, he shattered that dense, body-like cloud, which was a shower of arrows, and scattered it in the sky, along with hundreds of corpses.
विदूरथस्तमप्याशु व्यधमत्सायकोत्तमैः ।
सामान्यजलदं मत्तं कल्पान्तपवनो यथा ॥ २२ ॥
vidūrathastamapyāśu vyadhamatsāyakottamaiḥ ,
sāmānyajaladaṃ mattaṃ kalpāntapavano yathā 22
22. vidūrathaḥ tam api āśu vyadhamat sāyakottamaiḥ
sāmānyajaladam mattam kalpāntapavanaḥ yathā
22. vidūrathaḥ āśu sāyakottamaiḥ tam api vyadhamat yathā
kalpāntapavanaḥ mattam sāmānyajaladam (vyadhamat)
22. Vidūratha, with his excellent arrows, quickly scattered even him, just as the wind at the end of a cosmic cycle blows away a furious, ordinary cloud.
कृतप्रतिकृतैरेवं बाणवर्षैर्महीपती ।
व्यर्थीकृतैरनयतां प्रहारमविचारणैः ॥ २३ ॥
kṛtapratikṛtairevaṃ bāṇavarṣairmahīpatī ,
vyarthīkṛtairanayatāṃ prahāramavicāraṇaiḥ 23
23. kṛtapratikṛtaiḥ evam bāṇavarṣaiḥ mahīpatī
vyarthīkṛtaiḥ anayatām prahāram avicāraṇaiḥ
23. evam mahīpatī kṛtapratikṛtaiḥ vyarthīkṛtaiḥ
avicāraṇaiḥ bāṇavarṣaiḥ prahāram anayatām
23. Thus, the two kings waged their attacks with showers of arrows that were met with counter-attacks, rendered futile, and were indiscriminate.
अथादधे मोहनास्त्रं सिन्धुर्गन्धर्वसौहृदात् ।
प्राप्तं तेन ययुर्लोका विना मोहं विदूरथात् ॥ २४ ॥
athādadhe mohanāstraṃ sindhurgandharvasauhṛdāt ,
prāptaṃ tena yayurlokā vinā mohaṃ vidūrathāt 24
24. atha ādadhe mohanāstram sindhuḥ gandharvasauhṛdāt
prāptam tena yayuḥ lokāḥ vinā moham vidūrathāt
24. atha sindhuḥ gandharvasauhṛdāt prāptam mohanāstram
ādadhe tena lokāḥ moham yayuḥ vinā vidūrathāt
24. Then Sindhu, having obtained a bewilderment-inducing weapon (mohanāstra) through the friendship of the Gandharvas, applied it. By its effect, people fell into a state of delusion, yet Vidūratha alone remained without bewilderment.
व्यस्तशस्त्राम्बरा मूका विषण्णवदनेक्षणाः ।
मृता इवाभवन्योधाश्चित्रन्यस्ता इवाथवा ॥ २५ ॥
vyastaśastrāmbarā mūkā viṣaṇṇavadanekṣaṇāḥ ,
mṛtā ivābhavanyodhāścitranyastā ivāthavā 25
25. vyastaśastrāmbarāḥ mūkāḥ viṣaṇṇavadanekṣaṇāḥ
mṛtāḥ iva abhavan yodhāḥ citranyastāḥ iva athavā
25. yodhāḥ vyastaśastrāmbarāḥ mūkāḥ viṣaṇṇavadanekṣaṇāḥ
mṛtāḥ iva athavā citranyastāḥ iva abhavan
25. The warriors became like dead men, or as if depicted in a picture, with their weapons and garments scattered, silent, and with distressed faces and eyes.
यावद्विदूरथादन्यं मोहो नयति मन्दताम् ।
तावद्विदूरथो राजा प्रबोधास्त्रमथाददे ॥ २६ ॥
yāvadvidūrathādanyaṃ moho nayati mandatām ,
tāvadvidūratho rājā prabodhāstramathādade 26
26. yāvat vidūrathāt anyam mohaḥ nayati mandatām
tāvat vidūrathaḥ rājā prabodhāstram atha ādade
26. yāvat mohaḥ vidūrathāt anyam mandatām nayati
tāvat rājā vidūrathaḥ atha prabodhāstram ādade
26. As long as delusion (moha) was leading others into dullness, away from Vidūratha, King Vidūratha then took up the weapon of awakening.
ततः प्रबोधमापन्नाः प्रजाः प्रातरिवाब्जिनी ।
विदूरथे भवत्सिन्धुः कुद्धोऽर्क इव राक्षसे ॥ २७ ॥
tataḥ prabodhamāpannāḥ prajāḥ prātarivābjinī ,
vidūrathe bhavatsindhuḥ kuddho'rka iva rākṣase 27
27. tataḥ prabodham āpannāḥ prajāḥ prātaḥ iva abjinī
vidūrathe abhavat sindhuḥ kruddhaḥ arkaḥ iva rākṣase
27. tataḥ prajāḥ prabodham āpannāḥ prātaḥ abjinī iva (abhavan).
vidūrathe (saḥ) sindhuḥ abhavat,
(saḥ) rākṣase kruddhaḥ arkaḥ iva (abhavat).
27. Then, the subjects, having attained awakening, bloomed like lotus flowers at dawn. In Vidūratha, a great surge (of power) arose, and he became enraged like the sun confronting a rākṣasa.
नागास्त्रमाददे भीमं पाशबन्धनखेददम् ।
तेनाभवन्नभो व्याप्तं भोगिभिः पर्वतोपमैः ॥ २८ ॥
nāgāstramādade bhīmaṃ pāśabandhanakhedadam ,
tenābhavannabho vyāptaṃ bhogibhiḥ parvatopamaiḥ 28
28. nāgāstram ādade bhīmam pāśabandhanakhedadam tena
abhavat nabhaḥ vyāptam bhogibhiḥ parvatopamaiḥ
28. (saḥ) bhīmam pāśabandhanakhedadam nāgāstram ādade.
tena nabhaḥ parvatopamaiḥ bhogibhiḥ vyāptam abhavat.
28. He took up the terrible serpent-weapon (nāgāstra), which caused suffering by binding with its nooses. By means of that weapon, the sky became filled with mountain-like serpents.
सर्पैर्विलसिता भूमिर्मृणालैः सरसी यथा ।
संपन्ना गिरयः सर्वे कृष्णपन्नगकम्बलाः ॥ २९ ॥
sarpairvilasitā bhūmirmṛṇālaiḥ sarasī yathā ,
saṃpannā girayaḥ sarve kṛṣṇapannagakambalāḥ 29
29. sarpaiḥ vilasitā bhūmiḥ mṛṇālaiḥ sarasī yathā
sampannāḥ girayaḥ sarve kṛṣṇapannagakambalāḥ
29. yathā sarasī mṛṇālaiḥ vilasitā bhūmiḥ sarpaiḥ
sampannāḥ girayaḥ sarve kṛṣṇapannagakambalāḥ
29. Just as a pond is embellished by lotus stems, the earth was covered by snakes. All the mountains were blanketed with black snakes.
पदार्थाः सर्व एवेमे विषोष्मखिन्नतां ययुः ।
सपर्वतवनाभोगा ययौ विवशतां मही ॥ ३० ॥
padārthāḥ sarva eveme viṣoṣmakhinnatāṃ yayuḥ ,
saparvatavanābhogā yayau vivaśatāṃ mahī 30
30. padārthāḥ sarve eva ime viṣoṣmakhinnatām
yayuḥ saparvatavanābhogā mahī vivaśatām yayau
30. ime sarve padārthāḥ viṣoṣmakhinnatām yayuḥ
saparvatavanābhogā mahī vivaśatām yayau
30. All existing things became afflicted by the heat of the poison. The earth, along with its mountains and extensive forests, succumbed to a state of helplessness.
पूताङ्गारसमाकीर्णं विषवैषम्यशंसिनः ।
ववू रूक्षोष्णनीहारवाता ज्वलनरेणवः ॥ ३१ ॥
pūtāṅgārasamākīrṇaṃ viṣavaiṣamyaśaṃsinaḥ ,
vavū rūkṣoṣṇanīhāravātā jvalanareṇavaḥ 31
31. pūtāṅgārasamākīrṇam viṣavaiṣamyaśaṃsinaḥ

31. Winds carrying rough, hot mist and glowing dust blew, proclaiming the virulence of the poison, and scattering what looked like purified embers.
विदूरथोऽथ सौपर्णमाददेऽस्त्रं महास्त्रवित् ।
उदगुर्गरुडास्त्रेण सौपर्णाः पर्वता इव ॥ ३२ ॥
vidūratho'tha sauparṇamādade'straṃ mahāstravit ,
udagurgaruḍāstreṇa sauparṇāḥ parvatā iva 32
32. vidūrathaḥ atha sauparṇam ādade astram mahāstravit
udaguḥ garuḍāstreṇa sauparṇāḥ parvatāḥ iva

32. Then, Vidūratha, who was skilled in great weapons, took up the Suparṇa missile. At the impact of the Garuḍa weapon, numerous Garuḍa-birds arose, appearing like mountains.
काञ्चनीकृतसर्वाशाः सर्वाशापरिपूरकाः ।
पक्षपर्वतसंरम्भजनितप्रलयानिलाः ॥ ३३ ॥
kāñcanīkṛtasarvāśāḥ sarvāśāparipūrakāḥ ,

33. They make all quarters golden, fulfill all desires, and generate destructive winds from the vigorous flapping of their mountain-like wings.
घोणानिलजवाकृष्टश्वसद्भुजगमण्डलाः ।
महाघुरघुरारावपूरिताम्भोधिखण्डकाः ॥ ३४ ॥

34. They have multitudes of serpents breathing heavily, drawn by the forceful wind from their nostrils, and they fill parts of the ocean with their great ghuraghura roaring sound.
स सुपर्णघनोऽपात्तं सर्पौघं भूप्रपूरकम् ।
कष्टं शलशलायन्तमगस्त्य इव वारिधिम् ॥ ३५ ॥
sa suparṇaghano'pāttaṃ sarpaughaṃ bhūprapūrakam ,
kaṣṭaṃ śalaśalāyantamagastya iva vāridhim 35
35. saḥ suparṇaghanaḥ apāttam sarpaugham bhūprapūrakam

35. That great Garuḍa, a veritable cloud of great-winged birds, seized the multitude of wretched serpents, which was filling the earth and wriggling painfully, just as Agastya (drank) the ocean.
सर्पकम्बलनिर्मुक्तं भूमण्डलमराजत ।
चिरात्तमवनीरन्ध्रमिव निर्वारिराशि च ॥ ३६ ॥

36. The surface of the earth shone, freed from the blanket of serpents, just as a long-darkened earth-crevice (shines forth), and like the earth (that was made) free from the masses of water (the ocean).
ततस्तद्गरुडानीकं क्वाप्यगच्छददृश्यताम् ।
दीपौघ इव वातेन शरदेवाब्दमण्डलम् ॥ ३७ ॥
tatastadgaruḍānīkaṃ kvāpyagacchadadṛśyatām ,
dīpaugha iva vātena śaradevābdamaṇḍalam 37
37. tataḥ tat garuḍa-anīkam kva api agacchat adṛśyatām
| dīpa-oghaḥ iva vātena śarat iva abda-maṇḍalam ||
37. tataḥ tat garuḍa-anīkam vātena dīpa-oghaḥ iva,
śarat abda-maṇḍalam iva,
kva api adṛśyatām agacchat.
37. Then, that army of Garuḍas vanished, becoming invisible, just like a multitude of lamps extinguished by the wind, or like a cloud formation disappearing at the arrival of autumn.
वज्रभीत्येव पक्षौघपर्वतप्रकरः पुरः ।
स्वप्नदृष्टं जगदिव संकल्पपुरपूरवत् ॥ ३८ ॥
vajrabhītyeva pakṣaughaparvataprakaraḥ puraḥ ,
svapnadṛṣṭaṃ jagadiva saṃkalpapurapūravat 38
38. vajra-bhītyā iva pakṣa-ogha-parvata-prakaraḥ puraḥ

pakṣa-ogha-parvata-prakaraḥ puraḥ [adṛśyatām agacchat].
svapna-dṛṣṭam jagat iva,
saṅkalpa-pura-pūra-vat [adṛśyatām agacchat].
38. It vanished as if a multitude of mountains with wings, out of fear of the thunderbolt (vajra), had disappeared earlier; it was like a world seen in a dream or like cities fully formed by mere imagination.
ततस्तमोऽस्त्रमसृजत्सिन्धुरन्धान्धकारदम् ।
तेनान्धकारो ववृधे कृष्णो भूजठरोपमः ॥ ३९ ॥
tatastamo'stramasṛjatsindhurandhāndhakāradam ,
tenāndhakāro vavṛdhe kṛṣṇo bhūjaṭharopamaḥ 39
39. tataḥ tamaḥ-astram asṛjat sindhuḥ andha-andhakāra-dam
| tena andhakāraḥ vavṛdhe kṛṣṇaḥ bhū-jaṭhara-upamaḥ ||
39. tataḥ sindhuḥ andha-andhakāra-dam tamaḥ-astram asṛjat.
tena,
bhū-jaṭhara-upamaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ andhakāraḥ vavṛdhe.
39. Then King Sindhu released the weapon of darkness (tamas-astra), which bestowed blind darkness. By its effect, a dark gloom expanded, resembling the belly of the earth.
रोदोरन्ध्रे प्रविसृत एकार्णव इवाभवत् ।
मत्स्या इवाभवन्सेनास्ताराश्च मणयोऽभवन् ॥ ४० ॥
rodorandhre pravisṛta ekārṇava ivābhavat ,
matsyā ivābhavansenāstārāśca maṇayo'bhavan 40
40. rodas-randhre pravisṛtaḥ eka-arṇavaḥ iva abhavat |
matsyāḥ iva abhavan senāḥ tārāḥ ca maṇayaḥ abhavan ||
40. rodas-randhre [saḥ andhakāraḥ] pravisṛtaḥ eka-arṇavaḥ iva abhavat.
senāḥ matsyāḥ iva abhavan,
ca tārāḥ maṇayaḥ abhavan.
40. It (the darkness) spread throughout the interspace of the worlds, becoming like the primordial ocean (ekārṇava). The armies became like fish, and the stars became like gems.
अन्धकारप्रवृत्तेन मषीपङ्कार्णवोपमम् ।
कज्जलाचलसंभारोद्भूतकल्पानिलैरिव ॥ ४१ ॥

41. With darkness having begun, it resembled an ocean of muddy ink, as if (it were caused) by the winds of cosmic dissolution (kalpānila) arising from massive heaps of collyrium-mountains.
अन्धकूपे निपतिता इवासन्सकलाः प्रजाः ।
कल्पान्त इव संशेमुर्व्यवहारा दिशं प्रतिं ॥ ४२ ॥
andhakūpe nipatitā ivāsansakalāḥ prajāḥ ,
kalpānta iva saṃśemurvyavahārā diśaṃ pratiṃ 42
42. andhakūpe nipatitāḥ iva āsan sakalāḥ prajāḥ

42. All people (prajā) found themselves as if fallen into a dark well. All activities (vyavahāra) ceased, as if at the dissolution of a cosmic age (kalpānta), and the sense of direction was lost.
विदूरथोऽथ मार्तण्डं दीपं ब्रह्माण्डमण्डपे ।
अस्त्रं मन्त्रविदां श्रेष्ठः सृष्ट्वा मन्त्रो व्यचेष्टयत् ॥ ४३ ॥
vidūratho'tha mārtaṇḍaṃ dīpaṃ brahmāṇḍamaṇḍape ,
astraṃ mantravidāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ sṛṣṭvā mantro vyaceṣṭayat 43
43. vidūrathaḥ atha mārtaṇḍam dīpam brahmāṇḍamaṇḍape
astram mantravidām śreṣṭhaḥ sṛṣṭvā mantraḥ vyaceṣṭayat
43. atha mantravidām śreṣṭhaḥ vidūrathaḥ astram mantraḥ
sṛṣṭvā brahmāṇḍamaṇḍape mārtaṇḍam dīpam vyaceṣṭayat
43. Then, Vidūratha, the foremost among those who know mantras (mantra), having created a mantra (mantra) (to be used as) a weapon (astra), set the sun (mārtaṇḍa) in motion as a lamp in the pavilion of the universe (brahmāṇḍamaṇḍapa).
अथोदिततमोम्भोधिमर्कागस्त्यो गभस्तिभिः ।
अपिबत्कृष्णमम्भोदं शरत्काल इवामलः ॥ ४४ ॥
athoditatamombhodhimarkāgastyo gabhastibhiḥ ,
apibatkṛṣṇamambhodaṃ śaratkāla ivāmalaḥ 44
44. atha uditatamombhodhim arkaagastyaḥ gabhastibhiḥ

44. atha amalaḥ arkaagastyaḥ gabhastibhiḥ uditatamombhodhim apibat,
śaratkāle kṛṣṇam ambhodam iva.
44. Then, the pure Sun (arka), (acting) like (the sage) Agastya (Agastya), with its rays (gabhasti), absorbed the ocean of risen darkness, just as (the sun in) the autumn season (śaratkāla) clears away a dark cloud.
अन्धकाराम्बरोन्मुक्ता विरेजुरमला दिशः ।
भूपतेः पुरतः कान्ता इव रम्यपयोधराः ॥ ४५ ॥
andhakārāmbaronmuktā virejuramalā diśaḥ ,
bhūpateḥ purataḥ kāntā iva ramyapayodharāḥ 45

45. The pure directions shone brightly, freed from the cloak of darkness, like charming women with beautiful breasts appearing before the king.
ययुः प्रकटतामन्तरखिला वनराजयः ।
लोभकज्जलजालेन मुक्ता इव सतां धियः ॥ ४६ ॥
yayuḥ prakaṭatāmantarakhilā vanarājayaḥ ,
lobhakajjalajālena muktā iva satāṃ dhiyaḥ 46
46. yayuḥ prakaṭatām antarakhilāḥ vanarājayaḥ

46. All the forest ranges that were entirely within became manifest, just like the minds of virtuous people, freed from the dark veil of greed's kohl.
अथ कोपाकुलः सिन्धू राक्षसास्त्रं महाभयम् ।
क्षणादुदीरयामास मन्त्रोदीर्णशरात्मकम् ॥ ४७ ॥
atha kopākulaḥ sindhū rākṣasāstraṃ mahābhayam ,
kṣaṇādudīrayāmāsa mantrodīrṇaśarātmakam 47
47. atha kopākulaḥ sindhū rākṣasāstram mahābhayam
kṣaṇāt udīrayāmāsa mantrodīrṇaśarātmakam
47. atha kopākulaḥ sindhū kṣaṇāt mahābhayam

47. Then, agitated by anger, King Sindhu instantly discharged the demonic weapon, which was immensely terrifying and inherently consisted of arrows imbued with sacred incantations (mantras).
उदगुर्भीषणा दिग्भ्यः परुषा वनराक्षसाः ।
पातालगजफूत्कारक्षुब्धा इव महार्णवाः ॥ ४८ ॥
udagurbhīṣaṇā digbhyaḥ paruṣā vanarākṣasāḥ ,
pātālagajaphūtkārakṣubdhā iva mahārṇavāḥ 48
48. udaguḥ bhīṣaṇāḥ digbhyaḥ paruṣāḥ vanarākṣasāḥ

48. Fearsome and cruel forest demons rose up from all directions, like mighty oceans agitated by the snorts of the elephants of the netherworld (Pātāla).
कपिलोर्ध्वजटाधूम्राः स्फुटच्चटचटारवाः ।
अग्नयो लेलिहानोग्रजिह्वा आर्द्रेन्धना इव ॥ ४९ ॥
kapilordhvajaṭādhūmrāḥ sphuṭaccaṭacaṭāravāḥ ,

49. They were like fires fueled by wet wood: tawny and smoky, with upward-rising, matted-lock-like flames, emitting loud crackling and snapping sounds, and possessing fiercely licking tongues.
सावर्तवृत्तयो व्योम्नि भीमचीत्कारटांकृताः ।
अग्निदाहा महाधूमविलोला इव सोल्मुकाः ॥ ५० ॥
sāvartavṛttayo vyomni bhīmacītkāraṭāṃkṛtāḥ ,
agnidāhā mahādhūmavilolā iva solmukāḥ 50
50. sāvartavṛttayaḥ vyomni bhīmacītkāraṭāṃkṛtāḥ

50. In the sky, they (the fiery entities) had swirling motions and made dreadful shrieking and clanging sounds. They were like conflagrations, wildly agitated by immense smoke and accompanied by burning brands.
दंष्ट्राबिसाङ्कुराक्रान्तमुखपङ्काक्षदेहकाः ।
उदिता लोमजम्बाला दुष्पल्वलतटा इव ॥ ५१ ॥
daṃṣṭrābisāṅkurākrāntamukhapaṅkākṣadehakāḥ ,
uditā lomajambālā duṣpalvalataṭā iva 51

51. They emerged, resembling the banks of foul puddles, their bodies having muddy faces and eyes, overgrown with sprout-like lotus stalks resembling tusks, and their hair matted with mire.
निगिरन्तः प्रधावन्तो गर्जन्तः सर्जिता इव ।
जटाजालतडित्पुञ्जा जलदाः सजला इव ॥ ५२ ॥
nigirantaḥ pradhāvanto garjantaḥ sarjitā iva ,
jaṭājālataḍitpuñjā jaladāḥ sajalā iva 52

52. Devouring, rushing forth, and roaring, as if specially invoked, they were like water-laden clouds, with their matted locks appearing as masses of lightning.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तस्मिँल्लीलानाथो विदूरथः ।
नारायणास्त्रं प्रददे दुष्टभूतनिवारणम् ॥ ५३ ॥
etasminnantare tasmiṃllīlānātho vidūrathaḥ ,
nārāyaṇāstraṃ pradade duṣṭabhūtanivāraṇam 53
53. etasmin antare tasmin līlānāthaḥ vidūrathaḥ
nārāyaṇāstram pradade duṣṭabhūtanivāraṇam

53. At that very moment, Vidūratha, the lord of sport (līlānātha), unleashed the Nārāyaṇāstra, which repels malevolent beings.
उदीर्यमाण एवास्मिन्मन्त्रराजेऽस्त्रराजयः ।
राक्षसानां प्रशेमुस्ता अन्धकार इवोदये ॥ ५४ ॥
udīryamāṇa evāsminmantrarāje'strarājayaḥ ,
rākṣasānāṃ praśemustā andhakāra ivodaye 54
54. udīryamāṇaḥ eva asmin mantrarāje astrarājayaḥ
rākṣasānām praśemuḥ tāḥ andhakāraḥ iva udaye

54. As soon as this king of mantras was being uttered, those great warriors (astrarājayaḥ) of the Rākṣasas perished, just like darkness at the advent of dawn.
प्रमुष्टराक्षसानीकमभवद्भुवनत्रयम् ।
शरदीव गताम्भोदं व्योम निर्मलमाबभौ ॥ ५५ ॥
pramuṣṭarākṣasānīkamabhavadbhuvanatrayam ,
śaradīva gatāmbhodaṃ vyoma nirmalamābabhau 55
55. pramuṣṭarākṣasānīkam abhavat bhuvanatrayam
śaradi iva gatāmbhodam vyoma nirmalam ābabhau

vyoma śaradi gata-ambhodaṁ nirmalam iva ābabhau
55. The three worlds became devoid of the Rākṣasa army. The sky shone pure and clear, just like the firmament in autumn when the clouds have departed.
अथ सिन्धुर्मुमोचास्त्रमाग्नेयं ज्वलिताम्बरम् ।
जज्वलुः ककुभस्तेन कल्पाग्निज्वलिता इव ॥ ५६ ॥
atha sindhurmumocāstramāgneyaṃ jvalitāmbaram ,
jajvaluḥ kakubhastena kalpāgnijvalitā iva 56
56. atha sindhuḥ mumoca astram āgneyam jvalitāmbaram
jajvaluḥ kakubhaḥ tena kalpāgnijvalitāḥ iva
56. atha sindhuḥ jvalitāmbaram āgneyam astram mumoca
tena kakubhaḥ kalpāgnijvalitāḥ iva jajvaluḥ
56. Then Sindhu unleashed the Āgneya missile, which set the sky ablaze. By its power, the directions blazed forth as if ignited by the fire of cosmic dissolution.
धूमाम्बुदभराच्छन्ना बभूवुः सकला दिशः ।
गगने प्रोतपातालतिमिराकुलिता इव ॥ ५७ ॥
dhūmāmbudabharācchannā babhūvuḥ sakalā diśaḥ ,

57. All directions became covered with dense smoke-clouds, as if they were agitated in the sky by the darkness of the netherworld projected (into it).
बभूवुर्ज्वलिताकारा गिरयः काञ्चना इव ।
प्रफुल्लवननीरन्ध्रचम्पकौघवना इव ॥ ५८ ॥

58. The mountains took on a fiery appearance, as if they were golden, or like forests thick with masses of blossoming champaka trees.
ययुर्व्योमाद्रिदिक्कुञ्जा ज्वालाजालजटालताम् ।
कुङ्कुमेनोत्सवे मृत्योः समालब्धा इव स्रजः ॥ ५९ ॥

59. The sky, mountains, directions, and groves all became thickly entwined with masses of flames, as if they were garlands anointed with saffron for a festival of death.
ज्वलिता जनता चैकशङ्किनी सा नभःस्पृशा ।
सहस्राकृतिनौवेगचलितेनेव सागरात् ॥ ६० ॥
jvalitā janatā caikaśaṅkinī sā nabhaḥspṛśā ,
sahasrākṛtinauvegacaliteneva sāgarāt 60

60. The burning populace, gripped by a single fear, was swayed by that sky-high (entity/force), just as if by a current stirred from the ocean by the swift movement of a boat of a thousand forms.

61. Vidūratha, having worshipped (the deity/missile), released the Varuṇa missile (astra), just as one, having conquered an enemy, continues to strike again.
आययुः सलिलापूरास्तमःपूरा इवाभितः ।
अधस्तादूर्ध्वतो दिग्भ्यो द्रवरूपा इवाद्रयः ॥ ६२ ॥

62. Torrents of water arrived from all sides, resembling masses of darkness. They came from below, from above, and from all directions, like mountains in liquid form.
भागा इव शरव्योम्नि धृतयाना इवाम्बुदाः ।
महार्णवा इवोच्चस्थाः कुलशैलशिला इव ॥ ६३ ॥

63. They appeared like scattered segments in the arrow-filled sky, like clouds steadily moving on their course. They were like great oceans poised high above, or like boulders from the primordial mountains.
तमालौघा इवोड्डीनाः संधिता इव रात्रयः ।
कज्जलौघा इवोद्भूता लोकालोकतटादिव ॥ ६४ ॥

64. They appeared like soaring masses of tamāla trees, or like nights that had been combined. They seemed like surges of lampblack that had arisen, as if from the shores of the mythical Lokāloka mountain.
रसातलगुहाभोगा इव व्योमदिदृक्षवः ।
महाघुरघुरारावरंहोबृंहितमूर्तयः ॥ ६५ ॥
rasātalaguhābhogā iva vyomadidṛkṣavaḥ ,
mahāghuraghurārāvaraṃhobṛṃhitamūrtayaḥ 65

65. Their forms, augmented by the mighty, gurgling roar and rush, were like the vast caverns of the netherworld (rasātala) yearning to behold the sky.
तामग्निसंततिं मत्तामाचचामाम्बुसंततिः ।
भुवनव्यापिनी संध्यामाशु कृष्णेव यामिनी ॥ ६६ ॥
tāmagnisaṃtatiṃ mattāmācacāmāmbusaṃtatiḥ ,
bhuvanavyāpinī saṃdhyāmāśu kṛṣṇeva yāminī 66
66. tām agni-saṃtatim mattām ācucāma ambu-saṃtatiḥ
bhuvana-vyāpinīm sandhyām āśu kṛṣṇā iva yāminī
66. ambu-saṃtatiḥ tām mattām agni-saṃtatim ācucāma
kṛṣṇā yāminī iva āśu bhuvana-vyāpinīm sandhyām
66. The mass of water devoured that furious mass of fire, just as a dark night (yāminī) swiftly engulfs the world-pervading twilight (sandhyā).
तामग्निसंततिं पीत्वा पूरयामास भूतलम् ।
जलश्रीर्जटितं देहं निद्रेव व्यक्तिमेयुषी ॥ ६७ ॥
tāmagnisaṃtatiṃ pītvā pūrayāmāsa bhūtalam ,
jalaśrīrjaṭitaṃ dehaṃ nidreva vyaktimeyuṣī 67
67. tām agni-saṃtatim pītvā pūrayāmāsa bhūtalam
jala-śrīḥ jaṭitam deham nidrā iva vyaktim eyuṣī

67. Having swallowed that mass of fire, the splendor of water then filled the entire earth, just as sleep, having taken on a distinct form, permeates an embodied being.
एवंविधानस्त्रमोहान्विदधुर्धावनेतरे ।
मिथोमायामयानग्रे पश्यन्त्यनुभवन्ति च ॥ ६८ ॥
evaṃvidhānastramohānvidadhurdhāvanetare ,
mithomāyāmayānagre paśyantyanubhavanti ca 68
68. evaṃ-vidhān astra-mohān vidadhuḥ dhāvane itare
mithaḥ-māyā-mayān agre paśyanti anubhavanti ca

68. The others, while rushing about, conjured up weapon-illusions (māyā) of such a kind, and they both see and experience these mutually illusory things before them.
हेतिभारवराः सिन्धोश्चक्ररक्षास्ततोऽम्भसा ।
तृणानीव गताः प्रोह्य रथश्चास्याभवत्प्लुतः ॥ ६९ ॥
hetibhāravarāḥ sindhoścakrarakṣāstato'mbhasā ,
tṛṇānīva gatāḥ prohya rathaścāsyābhavatplutaḥ 69
69. heti-bhāra-varāḥ sindhoḥ cakra-rakṣāḥ tataḥ ambhasā
tṛṇāni iva gatāḥ prohya rathaḥ ca asya abhavat plutaḥ
69. tataḥ sindhoḥ heti-bhāra-varāḥ cakra-rakṣāḥ ca ambhasā

69. Then, Sindhu's finest warriors and his chariot's wheel-guards were carried away by the water like blades of grass. And his chariot also became submerged.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे सिन्धुरस्त्रं सस्मार शोषणम् ।
आपत्त्राणकरं दैवं ददौ च शररूपिणम् ॥ ७० ॥
etasminnantare sindhurastraṃ sasmāra śoṣaṇam ,
āpattrāṇakaraṃ daivaṃ dadau ca śararūpiṇam 70
70. etasmin antare sindhuḥ astram sasmāra śoṣaṇam
āpat-trāṇa-karam daivam dadau ca śara-rūpiṇam

70. In this crisis, Sindhu remembered a drying weapon (astra) that saves from distress. And the divine (power) gave him one in the form of an arrow.
शशामाम्बुमयी माया तेन यामेव भास्वता ।
ये मृतास्ते मृता एव बभूवुः शोषिता भुवः ॥ ७१ ॥
śaśāmāmbumayī māyā tena yāmeva bhāsvatā ,
ye mṛtāste mṛtā eva babhūvuḥ śoṣitā bhuvaḥ 71
71. śaśāma ambumayī māyā tena yā eva bhāsvatā ye
mṛtāḥ te mṛtāḥ eva babhūvuḥ śoṣitāḥ bhuvaḥ

71. The watery illusion (māyā), which indeed by that shining (arrow), subsided. Those who had died remained dead, and the lands became dried up.
अथ मूर्खरुषा तुल्यस्तापः संतापयन्प्रजाः ।
जजृम्भे झर्झराकीर्णवनविस्तारकर्कशः ॥ ७२ ॥
atha mūrkharuṣā tulyastāpaḥ saṃtāpayanprajāḥ ,
jajṛmbhe jharjharākīrṇavanavistārakarkaśaḥ 72

72. Then, a tormenting heat (tāpaḥ), comparable to the anger of a fool, afflicting all creatures, spread forth, harsh like the vast expanse of a forest filled with crackling sounds.
कचत्कनकनिःस्यन्दसुन्दराङ्गच्छविर्दिशाम् ।
आसीद्राजवरस्त्रीणामिवालेपोऽङ्गसंगतः ॥ ७३ ॥
kacatkanakaniḥsyandasundarāṅgacchavirdiśām ,
āsīdrājavarastrīṇāmivālepo'ṅgasaṃgataḥ 73

73. His body's splendor, beautiful like molten, glittering gold, became like an unguent clinging to the limbs of the finest royal women, spreading throughout all directions.
तेन धर्ममयीं मूर्च्छामाजग्मुस्तद्विरोधिनः ।
ग्रीष्मदावानलोत्तप्ता मृदवः पल्लवा इव ॥ ७४ ॥
tena dharmamayīṃ mūrcchāmājagmustadvirodhinaḥ ,
grīṣmadāvānalottaptā mṛdavaḥ pallavā iva 74
74. tena dharmamayīm mūrcchām ājagmuḥ tadvidrodhinaḥ

74. Due to that (splendor), his adversaries experienced a debilitating loss of their intrinsic nature (dharma), just like tender sprouts withered by a scorching summer forest fire.
विदूरथो रणोद्रेके तावत्क्रेंकारमाततम् ।
कोदण्डं कुण्डलीकृत्य पर्जन्यास्त्रमथाददे ॥ ७५ ॥

75. Meanwhile, in the height of battle, Vidūratha, having bent his taut bow into a circle with a twanging sound, then took up the Parjanya (rain) weapon.
उदगुः पङ्क्तयोऽब्दानां यामिन्य इव संचिताः ।
तमालविपिनोड्डीनसंरम्भादम्बुमन्थराः ॥ ७६ ॥

76. Rows of dark clouds, gathered and heavy with water, arose like massed nights, moving slowly due to the very force of their ascent from the Tamāla groves.
वामना वारिपूरेण गर्जनोद्दामसंचराः ।
महिम्नामन्थराशेषककुम्मण्डलकुण्डलाः ॥ ७७ ॥
vāmanā vāripūreṇa garjanoddāmasaṃcarāḥ ,

77. The clouds, dense with their masses of water, moved with vigorous, thundering roars. By their immense majesty, they made the entire circle of directions appear sluggish and heavy, as if it were their grand, encircling ornament.

78. The winds blew, accompanied by continuous heavy showers and piercing through the imposing mass of clouds. They were generous with the scattered burden of spray and mist.

विद्युतो दिवि दैव्यस्त्रीकटाक्षवलना इव ॥ ७९ ॥

79. The lightnings flashed brilliantly in the sky, resembling the sudden darting of very golden serpents, or like the fleeting side-glances of divine women.

दिशश्चलितमातङ्गसिंहर्क्षरवघर्घराः ॥ ८० ॥

80. The directions resounded loudly, their caves swollen with echoing thunderous roars. They rumbled with the agitated sounds of elephants, lions, and bears.
महामुसलधाराभिः पेतुरासारवृष्टयः ।
कष्टटंकारकठिनाः कृतान्तस्येव दृष्टयः ॥ ८१ ॥

81. Great pestle-like torrents of rain fell, as harsh and formidable as the piercing glances of Death (kṛtānta).

पातालादभ्रवृन्दानां युद्धायेवात्तविभ्रमः ॥ ८२ ॥

82. First, a hot, fire-like vapor (bāṣpa) arose from the netherworld (pātāla) of the earth, as if it had assumed an impressive appearance for the battle of the cloud masses.
ततो निमेषमात्रेण प्रशेमुर्मृगतृष्णिकाः ।
परबोधरसापूरैर्यथा संसारवासनाः ॥ ८३ ॥
tato nimeṣamātreṇa praśemurmṛgatṛṣṇikāḥ ,

83. Then, in just a blink of an eye, the mirages (mṛgatṛṣṇikāḥ) vanished, just as the latent impressions (saṃsāravāsanāḥ) of worldly existence (saṃsāra) are extinguished by the abundant essence of supreme knowledge.
आसीत्पङ्काङ्कमखिलं भूमण्डलमसंचरम् ।
पूरितः पूर्णधाराभिः सिन्धुः सिन्धुरिवाम्बुना ॥ ८४ ॥
āsītpaṅkāṅkamakhilaṃ bhūmaṇḍalamasaṃcaram ,
pūritaḥ pūrṇadhārābhiḥ sindhuḥ sindhurivāmbunā 84
84. āsīt paṅkāṅkam akhilam bhūmaṇḍalam asañcaram

84. The entire earth's surface (bhūmaṇḍala) became covered in mud and impassable. The ocean (sindhu) was filled with abundant torrents, just as an elephant (sindhu) is filled by water.
वायव्यमस्त्रमसृजत्पूरिताकाशकोटरम् ।
कल्पान्तनृत्तसंमत्तरटद्भैरवभीषणम् ॥ ८५ ॥

85. He unleashed the aerial weapon (vāyavya astra), which filled the vast hollow of the sky. It was as terrifying as the frenzied, roaring dance of Bhairava at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpānta).

86. The strong winds (samīrāḥ) blew through the quarters (kakummukheṣu), carrying shattered rock fragments and seemingly afflicted by thunderbolt strikes. They heralded the time of destruction (pralayasamaya) for the warriors, producing a sharp, twanging sound as if from bows.
