इति निश्चयवन्तस्ते महान्तो विगतैनसः ।
सत्याः सत्ये पदे शान्ते समे सुखमवस्थिताः ॥ १ ॥

iti niścayavantaste mahānto vigatainasaḥ ,

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: "Thus, those great beings, possessing firm resolve, free from all faults, and truly aligned with reality, remain happily established in that tranquil, balanced, ultimate truth (satya)."
इति पूर्णधियो धीराः समनीरागचेतसः ।
न निन्दन्ति न नन्दन्ति जीवितं मरणं तथा ॥ २ ॥
iti pūrṇadhiyo dhīrāḥ samanīrāgacetasaḥ ,
na nindanti na nandanti jīvitaṃ maraṇaṃ tathā 2
2. iti pūrṇadhiyaḥ dhīrāḥ samaniirāgacetasaḥ na
nindanti na nandanti jīvitam maraṇam tathā
2. iti pūrṇadhiyaḥ dhīrāḥ samaniirāgacetasaḥ
jīvitam maraṇam tathā na nindanti na nandanti
2. Thus, those wise and steady individuals who possess complete understanding, and whose minds are equanimous and free from attachment, neither lament nor delight in life or death.
इत्यलक्ष्यचमत्कारा नारायणभुजा इव ।
ऋजवः स्खलिताकारा अपरा इव मेरवः ॥ ३ ॥
ityalakṣyacamatkārā nārāyaṇabhujā iva ,
ṛjavaḥ skhalitākārā aparā iva meravaḥ 3
3. iti alakṣyacamatskārāḥ nārāyaṇabhujā iva
ṛjavaḥ skhalitākārāḥ aparāḥ iva meravaḥ
3. iti nārāyaṇabhujā iva alakṣyacamatskārāḥ
ṛjavaḥ aparāḥ meravaḥ iva skhalitākārāḥ
3. Thus, these individuals, whose marvels are imperceptible, are like the arm of Nārāyaṇa. They are intrinsically upright, yet their outward forms may appear to stumble or be imperfect, resembling other Meru mountains.
रेमिरे वनखण्डेषु द्वीपेषु नगरेषु च ।
देवोपवनमालासु स्वर्गेषु च सुरा इव ॥ ४ ॥
remire vanakhaṇḍeṣu dvīpeṣu nagareṣu ca ,
devopavanamālāsu svargeṣu ca surā iva 4
4. remire vanakhaṇḍeṣu dvīpeṣu nagareṣu ca

4. They roamed and delighted in forest groves, islands, and cities; and in rows of celestial gardens and heavenly realms, just like the gods.
भ्रेमुः कुसुमपूर्णासु दोलान्दोलचलासु च ।
विचित्रवनलेखासु मेरुश्रृङ्गशिखासु च ॥ ५ ॥
bhremuḥ kusumapūrṇāsu dolāndolacalāsu ca ,
vicitravanalekhāsu meruśrṛṅgaśikhāsu ca 5
5. bhremuḥ kusumapūrṇāsu dolāndolacalāsu ca

5. They wandered amidst places abundant with flowers, on swinging and swaying hammocks, through diverse forest landscapes, and upon the summits of Meru peaks.
चक्रुर्विजितशत्रूणि चामरच्छत्रवन्ति च ।
विचित्रार्थानि राज्यानि चित्राचारमयानि च ॥ ६ ॥
cakrurvijitaśatrūṇi cāmaracchatravanti ca ,
vicitrārthāni rājyāni citrācāramayāni ca 6
6. cakruḥ vijitaśatrūṇi cāmaracchattravanti ca
vicitrārthāni rājyāni citrācāramayāni ca
6. rājyāni vijitaśatrūṇi cāmaracchattravanti
ca vicitrārthāni citrācāramayāni ca cakruḥ
6. They established kingdoms that had conquered their enemies, possessed royal insignia like fly-whisks and umbrellas, had diverse objectives, and were characterized by varied customs.
अनुजग्मुरिमान्सर्वान्नानाचारविचेष्टितान् ।
श्रुतिस्मृत्युदितारम्भामितिकर्तव्यतामिति ॥ ७ ॥
anujagmurimānsarvānnānācāraviceṣṭitān ,
śrutismṛtyuditārambhāmitikartavyatāmiti 7
7. anujagmuḥ imān sarvān nānācāra-viceṣṭitān
śrutismṛtyuditārambhām itikartavyatām iti
7. imān sarvān nānācāra-viceṣṭitān
śrutismṛtyuditārambhām itikartavyatām iti anujagmuḥ
7. They followed all these diverse practices and actions, and they adhered to the prescribed method of execution (itikartavyatā) whose undertakings were laid down by the (Vedic revelation) śruti and (traditional law) smṛti.
ईदृशीरमणीयेषु ललनाहास्यहारिषु ।
विहाराहाररम्येषु भोगाभोगेषु भूषिताः ॥ ८ ॥
īdṛśīramaṇīyeṣu lalanāhāsyahāriṣu ,
vihārāhāraramyeṣu bhogābhogeṣu bhūṣitāḥ 8
8. īdṛśī-ramaṇīyeṣu lalanāhāsyahāriṣu
vihārāhāraramyeṣu bhogābhogeṣu bhūṣitāḥ
8. bhūṣitāḥ īdṛśī-ramaṇīyeṣu lalanāhāsyahāriṣu
vihārāhāraramyeṣu bhogābhogeṣu
8. Adorned, they were in such delightful situations, which were captivating with the laughter of women, and charming with various recreations and feasts, amidst abundant pleasures.
विविशुश्चारुचूतासु मन्दारवलितासु च ।
अप्सरोगीतपूर्णासु नन्दनोद्यानभूमिषु ॥ ९ ॥
viviśuścārucūtāsu mandāravalitāsu ca ,
apsarogītapūrṇāsu nandanodyānabhūmiṣu 9
9. viviśuḥ cārucūtāsu mandāravallitāsu ca
apsarogītapūrṇāsu nandanodyānabhūmiṣu
9. cārucūtāsu mandāravallitāsu ca
apsarogītapūrṇāsu nandanodyānabhūmiṣu viviśuḥ
9. They entered the regions of the Nandanā pleasure garden, which were charming with mango groves, entwined with Mandāra creepers, and filled with the songs of Apsaras.
सचराचरभूतेषु विश्रान्ताखिलजन्तुषु ।
यज्ञक्रियाकलापेषु गार्हस्थ्येषु यथाक्रमम् ॥ १० ॥
sacarācarabhūteṣu viśrāntākhilajantuṣu ,
yajñakriyākalāpeṣu gārhasthyeṣu yathākramam 10
10. sacarācarabhūteṣu viśrāntākhilajantuṣu
yajñakriyākalāpeṣu gārhasthyeṣu yathākramam
10. sacarācarabhūteṣu viśrāntākhilajantuṣu
yajñakriyākalāpeṣu gārhasthyeṣu yathākramam
10. They remained, in their proper sequence, among all animate and inanimate beings, in whom all creatures find repose, amidst the various sacrificial rites (yajña), and engaged in householder duties.
तेरुर्हतगजेन्द्रासु भ्रान्तभूरिशिवासु च ।
भेरीभांकारभीमासु संग्रामार्णववीथिषु ॥ ११ ॥
terurhatagajendrāsu bhrāntabhūriśivāsu ca ,
bherībhāṃkārabhīmāsu saṃgrāmārṇavavīthiṣu 11
11. teruḥ hatagajendrāsu bhrāntabhūriśivāsu ca
bherībhāṃkārabhīmāsu saṃgrāmārṇavavīthiṣu
11. te ruḥ saṃgrāmārṇavavīthiṣu bherībhāṃkārabhīmāsu
hatagajendrāsu bhrāntabhūriśivāsu ca
11. They traversed the paths of the ocean of battle, which were made dreadful by the booming sound of war drums, where mighty elephants lay slain, and where numerous jackals roamed.
तस्थुः परुषचित्तासु हृतवित्तोद्धतासु च ।
संरम्भक्षोभरौद्रीषु सर्वासु द्वन्द्वरीतिषु ॥ १२ ॥
tasthuḥ paruṣacittāsu hṛtavittoddhatāsu ca ,
saṃrambhakṣobharaudrīṣu sarvāsu dvandvarītiṣu 12
12. tathuḥ paruṣacittāsu hṛtavittoddhatāsu ca
saṃrambhakṣobharaudrīṣu sarvāsu dvandvarītiṣu
12. tathuḥ sarvāsu dvandvarītiṣu paruṣacittāsu
hṛtavittoddhatāsu ca saṃrambhakṣobharaudrīṣu
12. They remained steadfast in all forms of dualistic conflict, which were marked by harshness of mind, by the arrogance of those whose wealth had been plundered, and by fierce agitation and rage.
मनस्तेषां तु नीरागमनुपाधि गतभ्रमम् ।
असक्तं मुक्तमाशान्तं परं सत्वपदं गतम् ॥ १३ ॥
manasteṣāṃ tu nīrāgamanupādhi gatabhramam ,
asaktaṃ muktamāśāntaṃ paraṃ satvapadaṃ gatam 13
13. manaḥ teṣām tu nīrāgam anupādhi gatabhramam
asaktam muktam āśāntam param sattvapadam gatam
13. teṣām manaḥ tu nīrāgam anupādhi gatabhramam
asaktam muktam āśāntam param sattvapadam gatam
13. But their mind was indeed free from desire, unconditioned, devoid of delusion, unattached, liberated, utterly peaceful, and had attained the supreme state of being (sattva).
न ममज्जुः क्वचिदपि संकटेषु महत्स्वपि ।
महदप्युपयातेषु कुलशलाः सरस्स्विव ॥ १४ ॥
na mamajjuḥ kvacidapi saṃkaṭeṣu mahatsvapi ,
mahadapyupayāteṣu kulaśalāḥ sarassviva 14
14. na mamajjuḥ kvacit api saṅkaṭeṣu mahatsu api
mahat api upayāteṣu kulaśailāḥ sarassu iva
14. kvacit api mahatsu api saṅkaṭeṣu na mamajjuḥ
sarassu mahat api upayāteṣu kulaśailāḥ iva
14. They never sank, even in the greatest of difficulties, just as principal mountains (kulaśailāḥ) do not sink even when immense waters approach the lakes.
नोल्ललास विलासिन्या श्रिया परमकान्तया ।
परिपूर्णेन्दुलक्ष्म्येव जलराशी रघूद्वह ॥ १५ ॥
nollalāsa vilāsinyā śriyā paramakāntayā ,
paripūrṇendulakṣmyeva jalarāśī raghūdvaha 15
15. na ullalāsa vilāsinyā śriyā paramakāntayā
paripūrṇendulakṣmyā iva jalarāśiḥ raghūdvaha
15. raghūdvaha vilāsinyā paramakāntayā śriyā na
ullalāsa jalarāśiḥ paripūrṇendulakṣmyā iva
15. O descendent of Raghu (Raghūdvaha), he did not exult in delightful and supremely charming splendor (śrī), just as the ocean (jalarāśi) is not elated by the beauty of the full moon.
न मम्लौ दुःखशोकेन ग्रीष्मेणेव वनस्थलम् ।
जहर्ष च न भोगौघैरवश्यायैरिवौषधीः ॥ १६ ॥
na mamlau duḥkhaśokena grīṣmeṇeva vanasthalam ,
jaharṣa ca na bhogaughairavaśyāyairivauṣadhīḥ 16
16. na mamlau duḥkhaśokena grīṣmeṇa iva vanasthalam
jaharṣa ca na bhogaughaiḥ avaśyāyaiḥ iva oṣadhīḥ
16. duḥkhaśokena na mamlau grīṣmeṇa iva vanasthalam
ca bhogaughaiḥ na jaharṣa oṣadhīḥ avaśyāyaiḥ iva
16. He did not wither from sorrow and grief (duḥkhaśoka) like a forest (vanasthalam) does in summer, nor did he rejoice in abundant pleasures like plants (oṣadhīḥ) do not exult in dewdrops.
ते हि केवलमव्यग्राः कुर्वन्तः काममञ्जरीः ।
इष्टानिष्टफलं राम नाभिलेषुर्न तत्यजुः ॥ १७ ॥
te hi kevalamavyagrāḥ kurvantaḥ kāmamañjarīḥ ,
iṣṭāniṣṭaphalaṃ rāma nābhileṣurna tatyajuḥ 17
17. te hi kevalam avyagrāḥ kurvantaḥ kāmañjarīḥ
iṣṭāniṣṭaphalam rāma na abhileṣuḥ na tatyajuḥ
17. rāma hi te kevalam avyagrāḥ kurvantaḥ kāmañjarīḥ
iṣṭāniṣṭaphalam na abhileṣuḥ na tatyajuḥ
17. Indeed, O Rāma, they, being utterly calm (avyagrāḥ), performed actions that fulfilled their desires (kāmamañjarīḥ), yet they neither desired nor abandoned the desired or undesired results (iṣṭāniṣṭaphalam).
नोदगुः कार्यसंपत्तावाक्रान्ता नास्तमाययुः ।
जहृषुर्न सुखप्राप्तौ मम्लुर्नैव च संकटे ॥ १८ ॥
nodaguḥ kāryasaṃpattāvākrāntā nāstamāyayuḥ ,
jahṛṣurna sukhaprāptau mamlurnaiva ca saṃkaṭe 18
18. na udaguḥ kāryasampattau ākrāntāḥ na astam āyayuḥ
jahṛṣuḥ na sukhaprāptau mamluḥ na eva ca saṅkaṭe
18. kāryasampattau na udaguḥ ākrāntāḥ na astam āyayuḥ
sukhaprāptau na jahṛṣuḥ ca saṅkaṭe na eva mamluḥ
18. They did not become elated upon the success of their endeavors, nor did they become despondent when overwhelmed. They did not rejoice upon attaining happiness, nor did they feel sorrow in times of adversity.
मुमुहुर्न विमोहेषु न ममज्जुर्विपत्क्रमैः ।
न जहर्षुः शुभैः शोकै रुरुदुर्न भवानिव ॥ १९ ॥
mumuhurna vimoheṣu na mamajjurvipatkramaiḥ ,
na jaharṣuḥ śubhaiḥ śokai rurudurna bhavāniva 19
19. mumuhuḥ na vimoheṣu na mamajjuḥ vipatkramaiḥ na
jahṛṣuḥ śubhaiḥ śokaiḥ ruruduḥ na bhavān iva
19. vimoheṣu na mumuhuḥ vipatkramaiḥ na mamajjuḥ
śubhaiḥ na jahṛṣuḥ śokaiḥ na ruruduḥ bhavān iva
19. They were not deluded by strong illusions, nor did they sink under the successive onslaughts of misfortune. They did not rejoice over auspicious events, nor did they weep over sorrows like ordinary people.
प्राकृताचारसंप्राप्ते कुर्वन्तः कर्म केवलम् ।
स्थिता विगतसंरम्भमपरा इव मेरवः ॥ २० ॥
prākṛtācārasaṃprāpte kurvantaḥ karma kevalam ,
sthitā vigatasaṃrambhamaparā iva meravaḥ 20
20. prākṛtācārasamprāpte kurvantaḥ karma kevalam
sthitāḥ vigatasaṃrambham aparāḥ iva meravaḥ
20. prākṛtācārasamprāpte kevalam karma kurvantaḥ
vigatasaṃrambham sthitāḥ aparāḥ meravaḥ iva
20. Merely performing their duties when customary actions were called for, they remained like other mountains, completely devoid of agitation or excitement.
तां त्वं दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य राघवाऽघविनाशिनीम् ।
अनहंकृत्यहंकारो विहरस्व यथाक्रमम् ॥ २१ ॥
tāṃ tvaṃ dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya rāghavā'ghavināśinīm ,
anahaṃkṛtyahaṃkāro viharasva yathākramam 21
21. tām tvam dṛṣṭim avaṣṭabhya rāghava aghavināśinīm
anahaṅkṛtya ahaṅkāraḥ viharasva yathākramam
21. rāghava tvam aghavināśinīm tām dṛṣṭim avaṣṭabhya
anahaṅkṛtya ahaṅkāraḥ yathākramam viharasva
21. O Rāghava, adopting that perspective which destroys evil, and being free from ego (ahaṅkāra), conduct yourself in due course.
यथाभूतामिमामेव पश्यत्सर्गपरम्पराम् ।
मेरुस्थितोऽब्धिगम्भीरः सममास्स्व गतभ्रमः ॥ २२ ॥
yathābhūtāmimāmeva paśyatsargaparamparām ,
merusthito'bdhigambhīraḥ samamāssva gatabhramaḥ 22
22. yathābhūtām imām eva paśyat sargaparampārām
merusthitaḥ abdhigambhīraḥ samam āssva gatabhramaḥ
22. gatabhramaḥ merusthitaḥ abdhigambhīraḥ yathābhūtām
imām eva sargaparampārām paśyat samam āssva
22. Remain steady like Mount Meru, profound like the ocean, and free from delusion, abiding in equanimity, seeing this entire flow of creation exactly as it truly is.
चिन्मात्रं सर्वमेवेदमित्थमाभासतां गतम् ।
नेह सत्यमसत्यं वा क्वचिदस्ति न किंचन ॥ २३ ॥
cinmātraṃ sarvamevedamitthamābhāsatāṃ gatam ,
neha satyamasatyaṃ vā kvacidasti na kiṃcana 23
23. citmātram sarvam eva idam ittham ābhāsatām gatam
na iha satyam asatyam vā kvacit asti na kiñcana
23. idam sarvam eva citmātram ittham ābhāsatām gatam
iha kvacit satyam asatyam vā kiñcana na asti
23. All this is merely pure consciousness (cit), having manifested in this way. Here, neither the real nor the unreal, nor anything whatsoever, truly exists anywhere.
महत्तामलमालम्ब्य त्यक्त्वेदमवहेलया ।
असक्तबुद्धिः सर्वत्र भव भव्य भवक्षयी ॥ २४ ॥
mahattāmalamālambya tyaktvedamavahelayā ,
asaktabuddhiḥ sarvatra bhava bhavya bhavakṣayī 24
24. mahattām amalām ālambya tyaktvā idam avahelayā
asaktabuddhiḥ sarvatra bhava bhavya bhavakṣayī
24. bhavya,
amalām mahattām ālambya,
idam avahelayā tyaktvā,
sarvatra asaktabuddhiḥ bhava,
bhavakṣayī bhava
24. O noble one, by taking refuge in the pure greatness [of the Self] and abandoning this [world] with indifference, become one whose intellect is unattached everywhere, and thus become one who eradicates cyclic existence (saṃsāra).
किं रोदिषि घनोद्वेगं मूढवच्चानुशोचसि ।
भ्रमस्युद्भान्तचित्तश्च सौम्यावर्ते तृणं यथा ॥ २५ ॥
kiṃ rodiṣi ghanodvegaṃ mūḍhavaccānuśocasi ,
bhramasyudbhāntacittaśca saumyāvarte tṛṇaṃ yathā 25
25. kim rodiṣi ghanodvegam mūḍhavat ca anuśocasi bhramasi
udbhrāntacittaḥ ca saumya āvarte tṛṇam yathā
25. saumya,
kim ghanodvegam rodiṣi ca mūḍhavat anuśocasi? ca udbhrāntacittaḥ āvarte tṛṇam yathā bhramasi?
25. O gentle one, why do you cry with great agitation and lament like a fool? And why do you wander with a bewildered mind, like a blade of grass in a whirlpool?
श्रीराम उवाच ।
अहो न भगवन्नूनं सम्यग्जातमलक्षयः ।
त्वत्प्रसादात्प्रबुद्धोऽस्मि सूर्यसङ्गादिवाम्बुजम् ॥ २६ ॥
śrīrāma uvāca ,
aho na bhagavannūnaṃ samyagjātamalakṣayaḥ ,
tvatprasādātprabuddho'smi sūryasaṅgādivāmbujam 26
26. śrīrāma uvāca aho na bhagavan nūnam samyak jātam alakṣayaḥ
tvatprasādāt prabuddhaḥ asmi sūryasaṅgāt iva ambujam
26. śrīrāma uvāca aho bhagavan nūnam tvatprasādāt alakṣayaḥ
samyak jātam ambujam iva sūryasaṅgāt prabuddhaḥ asmi
26. Śrī Rāma said: O Lord, indeed, through your grace, the imperceptible has properly manifested, and I am awakened, just as a lotus blooms from its contact with the sun.
भ्रान्तिरस्तं गता नूनं मिहिका शरदीव मे ।
संशान्ताखिलसंदेहः करिष्ये वचनं तव ॥ २७ ॥
bhrāntirastaṃ gatā nūnaṃ mihikā śaradīva me ,
saṃśāntākhilasaṃdehaḥ kariṣye vacanaṃ tava 27
27. bhrāntiḥ astam gatā nūnam mihikā śaradi iva
me saṃśāntākhilasaṃdehaḥ kariṣye vacanam tava
27. me bhrāntiḥ nūnam mihikā śaradi iva astam gatā
saṃśāntākhilasaṃdehaḥ tava vacanam kariṣye
27. My delusion has certainly vanished, just like mist in autumn. With all my doubts completely settled, I shall certainly carry out your instruction.
व्यपगतमदमोहो मानमात्सर्यमुक्त श्चिरतरमुदितात्मा शान्तशोकश्चिरेण ।
पुनरसुखमगच्छन्स्वच्छयैकान्तबुद्ध्या यदिह वदसि साधो तत्करिष्येऽविशङ्कं ॥ २८ ॥
vyapagatamadamoho mānamātsaryamukta ścirataramuditātmā śāntaśokaścireṇa ,
punarasukhamagacchansvacchayaikāntabuddhyā yadiha vadasi sādho tatkariṣye'viśaṅkaṃ 28
28. vyapagatamadamohaḥ mānamātsaryamuktaḥ
cirataramuditātmā śāntaśokaḥ cireṇa punar
asukham agacchan svacchayā ekāntabuddhyā
yat iha vadasi sādho tat kariṣye aviśaṅkam
28. sādho vyapagatamadamohaḥ mānamātsaryamuktaḥ
cirataramuditātmā śāntaśokaḥ cireṇa
punar asukham agacchan svacchayā ekāntabuddhyā
yat iha vadasi tat aviśaṅkam kariṣye
28. O virtuous one (sādhu), with my pride and delusion (moha) completely vanished, freed from arrogance and envy, my true self (ātman) having awakened for a long time, and my sorrow permanently settled, never again experiencing unhappiness, and with a pure, singular focus of intellect (buddhi) - whatever you say here, that I shall undoubtedly perform.
