Sri Vasistha said: Then, when the demons had been slain by Hari, Prahlada, whose self (ātman) was overcome by sorrow, remained silent and reflected in a cavern of the netherworld.
कोन्वस्माकमुपायः स्याद्य एवेहासुराङ्कुरः ।
तीक्ष्णाग्रो जायते तं तं भुङ्क्ते शाखामृगो हरिः ॥ २ ॥

kaḥ nu asmākam upāyaḥ syāt yat eva iha asura-aṅkuraḥ

tīkṣṇa-agraḥ jāyate tam tam bhuṅkte śākhā-mṛgaḥ hariḥ

asmākam kaḥ nu upāyaḥ syāt iha yat eva tīkṣṇa-agraḥ
asura-aṅkuraḥ jāyate tam tam śākhā-mṛgaḥ hariḥ bhuṅkte
asura-aṅkuraḥ jāyate tam tam śākhā-mṛgaḥ hariḥ bhuṅkte

What indeed would be a solution for us? Any demon-sprout that emerges here, becoming sharp and fierce, Hari, like a monkey, devours each and every one of them.
न कदाचन पाताले दैत्या दोर्दण्डशालिनः ।
स्थिरा बभूवुरुद्भिन्नाः पद्मा इव हिमाचले ॥ ३ ॥

Never, in the netherworld (pātāla), did the Daityas (demons), powerful in their arms, remain stable once they appeared, just as lotuses, once they have sprouted, do not remain (stable) in the Himalaya.
उत्पत्त्योत्पत्त्य नश्यन्ति भासुराकारघर्घराः ।
क्षीणप्रस्फुरितारम्भास्तरङ्गा इव वारिधेः ॥ ४ ॥

Like the waves of the ocean, which, though having brilliant forms and roaring sounds, arise repeatedly only to perish, having their initial surge quickly diminish.
सबाह्याभ्यन्तरं कष्टं समग्रालोकहारिणः ।
रिपवः प्रौढिमायाता अपूर्वतिमिरभ्रमाः ॥ ५ ॥

The enemies, who steal all light (wisdom), have become fully mature and powerful; they are unprecedented illusions (māyā) of darkness, causing both external and internal suffering.
तमःप्रपूर्णहृदयाः संकुचत्पत्रसंपदः ।
सुहृदः खेदमायान्ति निशीथकमलाकराः ॥ ६ ॥

Friends, whose hearts are completely filled with darkness and whose array of expressions (like petals) is contracted, experience sorrow, just as lotus ponds at midnight are filled with gloom and have their petals closed.
तातस्य मलिनैर्नूनं पादपीठोपमर्दकैः ।
सुरैर्विषय आक्रान्तो मृगैरिव महावनम् ॥ ७ ॥

Surely, the father's realm has been overrun by the impure 'gods' who desecrate his footstool, just as a great forest is overrun by wild animals.
निरुद्यमा गतश्रीका दीनाः प्रकटिताशयाः ।
बान्धवा न विराजन्ते पद्माः प्लुष्टदला इव ॥ ८ ॥

Relatives who are without effort, deprived of their glory, miserable, and whose inner intentions have been revealed do not appear splendid, just like lotuses with burnt petals.
स्फुरन्त्यसुरवीराणां गृहेष्वविरतानिलैः ।
धूसरा भस्मनीहारा धूपधूमभरा इव ॥ ९ ॥

In the homes of the demon heroes, gray, ash-like mists, resembling thick clouds of incense smoke, flicker due to the ceaseless winds.
हृतद्वारकपाटासु दैत्यान्तःपुरभित्तिषु ।
प्रभा मरकतस्येव जाता नवयवाङ्कुराः ॥ १० ॥

On the walls of the inner palaces of the demonesses, whose doors and shutters had been torn away, new barley shoots appeared, resembling the emerald's glow.

Even the demons (dānava), who were like rutting elephants to the lotus-pond that is the navel of the three worlds, have now fallen into wretchedness (dainyam) just like the gods. Oh, what is impossible for fate (vidhi)?
मनाक्चलति पर्णेऽपि दृष्टारिभयभीतयः ।
वध्वस्त्रस्यन्ति विध्वस्ता मृग्यो ग्रामगता इव ॥ १२ ॥

12.
Even when a leaf slightly stirs, wives, terrified by the fear of their seen enemies, become distressed and devastated, much like deer that have entered a village.
आसुरीकर्णपूरार्थ फुल्ला रत्नगुलुच्छकाः ।
नरसिंहकरालूनाः स्थाणुतामागता द्रुमाः ॥ १३ ॥

The trees, whose blossoming jewel-clusters were intended as ear ornaments for the asura women, were severed by the hands of Narasiṃha and have now been reduced to stumps.

पुनरारोपितास्तत्र नन्दने कल्पपादपाः ॥ १४ ॥

The wish-fulfilling trees (kalpa-pādapa), whose leaves were like celestial creepers and which were studded with clusters of jewels, have been replanted there in the Nandana garden.

प्रवृत्तास्ता भविष्यन्ति शैलसानुष्विवापगाः ॥ १६ ॥

I believe that the great rivers of ichor (dāna) will flow from the temples of the divine elephants, just as rivers (apagāḥ) flow on mountain slopes (śailasānuṣu).

The marks of dried ichor (dāna) on the cheeks of our elephants appear like dust on thoroughly parched desert regions.

ते मेरुशिखरैस्तुल्या दैत्या दुर्लभतां गताः ॥ १८ ॥

Those Daityas, who once enjoyed winds fragrant with the nectar of blooming white Mandāra flowers and were comparable to the peaks of Mount Meru, have now attained a state of rarity (durlabhatā) or become difficult to find.

The beautiful celestial women and Gandharvas, who were once suitable for the harems of the Danavas, have now taken their abode (sthiti) on Mount Meru, like blossoms (mañjaryaḥ) on a tree.

Alas, dear one! The allurements of human women, dull like dry lotuses, are shamed by the graceful dances of celestial maidens.

Alas! My father was formerly fanned by whisks. Now, lamentably, in heaven, the thousand-eyed (Indra) is being fanned by those very (same) implements.
इयमस्माकमप्यापदागता दैन्यदायिनी ।
तस्यैकस्य प्रसादेन दुष्पौरुषगतेर्हरेः ॥ २२ ॥

iyamasmākamapyāpadāgatā dainyadāyinī ,
tasyaikasya prasādena duṣpauruṣagaterhareḥ 22

This calamity, which brings wretchedness, has also befallen us, solely through the will of that Hari whose prowess (or destiny) has turned unfavorable.

The gods, who found repose in the dense shade of his multitude of arms, never experience suffering, just like the peaks of the Himalaya (himādri) never feel the heat.

Just like dogs and monkeys (śākhā-mṛgāḥ) would besiege, they obstruct us, who, by relying on the ultimate peak of Śauri's (Kṛṣṇa's) valor, are endowed with glory.

Consequently, on the lotus-faces of the asura (demon) wives, tears (bāṣpa) are perpetually present, serving as an adornment to their very adornment, just as dew (hima) rests upon lotus plants (abjinī).

This ancient pavilion of the world (jagat), with its walls decayed, shattered, and collapsing, is sustained solely by his arms, which are like pillars of blue jewels (nīlamaṇi).

He is the upholder of the divine army, which is drowning in the ocean of calamity (vipad-arṇava), just as the tortoise (kacchapa) was the upholder of Mount Mandara (mandara), which had sunk into the depths of the milk ocean (kṣīroda).

O best of Asuras, all these, my father and others, were felled by him alone, just as the great mountains (kulācalāḥ) are cast down by the agitated wind at the end of a cosmic age (kalpa).

He alone is unique; his arms are like a fire capable of the work of destruction. He is the preceptor of the host of gods, glorious, formidable, and is Madhusūdana.

By the power of that one [Madhusūdana], who is like an axe to the mace-like arms of the demons, valorous Indra (Śakra) harasses the Dānavas (dānavān) just as a monkey harasses children.

That unconquerable, lotus-eyed one (Puṇḍarīkākṣa), even while being without weapons, is not torn apart by cuts from weapons and missiles, as he is of the essence of a thunderbolt (vajra).

Many formidable battle maneuvers, resembling mutually hurled mountains, were mastered by him, and similarly by our grandfather (Bhishma).

In all those exceedingly dreadful and vast battle formations, whoever was not afraid then, he will certainly experience fear now – what more is there to say?

I clearly believe that this is the one and only expedient for an assault on Hari (Vishnu); without this, no counter-measure exists.

With one's entire self (ātman), with all one's intellect, and with the full force of all one's endeavors, He alone is the refuge, the divine Lord (deva), the recourse available here; there is no other way.

There is no one greater than him (Hari) within the three worlds. Hari has become the cause of creation, maintenance, and dissolution.

From this very moment, I have forever taken refuge in the unborn Narayana. Indeed, I am entirely pervaded by Narayana everywhere.

The mantra (mantra) "Namaḥ Nārāyaṇāya" (Salutations to Narayana) is capable of accomplishing all objectives. It never departs from the treasury of my heart, just as the wind never leaves the sky.

Hari is all directions; Hari is the sky (space); Hari is the earth; Hari is the entire universe. I am Hari, whose true nature (ātman) is immeasurable. Indeed, I have become entirely pervaded by Vishnu.

One who is not Viṣṇu, by worshipping Viṣṇu, does not become a partaker of the fruit of worship. Having become Viṣṇu, one should worship Viṣṇu. I am this Viṣṇu, thus established.

The Hari who is named Prahlāda is not a different Hari, separate from Me. With this certainty, I am the all-pervading one, present both internally and everywhere.

Having completely filled this infinite space, the golden-bodied son of Vinatā (Garuḍa) has attained the state of being a seat for my limbs.

My divine form (or 'limbs,' referring back to the previous verse) manifests as great emerald trees. Upon the single branch-like extension of these arms, all the birds which are weapons find their repose, and they are adorned with abundant clusters of radiant nails.

These are my four arms, whose shoulder regions are adorned with garlands of soft mandāra flowers, and whose armlets are chafed by the Mandara mountain.

This is Lakṣmī, who stands by my side, bearing a beautiful whisk (cāmara) charming like the moving crescent moon, and who emerged from the depths of the ocean of milk.

This is Kīrti (fame), who stands by my side, who effortlessly captivates the worlds, who is the blossom of the tree of the three worlds, and who shines with an unwavering, pure radiance.

This is my Māyā (cosmic illusion), who stands by my side, constantly creating new networks of worlds, and who delights in her own magic (indra-jāla).

This very Jaya, who effortlessly conquered the three worlds as if they were a mere tree branch, shines by my side like a creeper of the wish-fulfilling tree.

These two eyes of mine, in the middle of my face, are the perpetually cold and hot deities, the Moon and the Sun, who manifest the cycle of existence (saṃsāra).

Previously, the face of the demon (asura) was lauded by the captive divine women. But today, it is the faces of the captive asura women that are gazed upon by the gods.
