तत्र ते पेततुर्देव्यौ ग्रामेऽन्तःशीतलात्मनि ।
भोगमोक्षश्रियौ शान्ते पुंसीव विदितात्मनि ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: There, those two goddesses - the embodiments of worldly enjoyment and liberation (mokṣa) - descended into a village whose inner essence (ātman) was serene, just as [these two aspects reside] within a peaceful person who has realized the Self (ātman).
कालेनैतावता लीला तेनाभ्यासेन साभवत् ।
शुद्धज्ञानैकदेहत्वात्त्रिकालामलदर्शिनी ॥ २ ॥
kālenaitāvatā līlā tenābhyāsena sābhavat ,
śuddhajñānaikadehatvāttrikālāmaladarśinī 2
2. kālena etāvatā līlā tena abhyāsena sā abhavat
śuddhajñānaikadehatvāt trikālāmaladarśinī
2. kālena etāvatā tena abhyāsena līlā sā
śuddhajñānaikadehatvāt trikālāmaladarśinī abhavat
2. Through the passage of such a long time and by virtue of that continuous practice, Līlā became a flawless perceiver of the three divisions of time, her very being (ātman) having merged with pure knowledge.
अथ सस्मार सर्वास्ताः प्राक्तनीः संसृतेर्गतीः ।
सा स्वयं स्वरसेनैव प्राग्जन्ममरणादिकाः ॥ ३ ॥
atha sasmāra sarvāstāḥ prāktanīḥ saṃsṛtergatīḥ ,
sā svayaṃ svarasenaiva prāgjanmamaraṇādikāḥ 3
3. atha sasmāra sarvāḥ tāḥ prāktanīḥ saṃsṛteḥ gatīḥ
sā svayam svarasena eva prāgjanmamaraṇādikāḥ
3. atha sā svayam svarasena eva sarvāḥ tāḥ prāktanīḥ
saṃsṛteḥ gatīḥ prāgjanmamaraṇādikāḥ sasmāra
3. Then, she herself, by her own intrinsic nature (ātman), remembered all those previous states of her transmigration (saṃsāra), beginning with past births and deaths.
लीलोवाच ।
देवि देशमिमं दृष्ट्वा त्वत्प्रसादात्स्मराम्यहम् ।
इह तत्प्राक्तनं सर्वं चेष्टितं चेष्टितान्तरम् ॥ ४ ॥
līlovāca ,
devi deśamimaṃ dṛṣṭvā tvatprasādātsmarāmyaham ,
iha tatprāktanaṃ sarvaṃ ceṣṭitaṃ ceṣṭitāntaram 4
4. līlā uvāca devi deśam imam dṛṣṭvā tvatprasādāt smarāmi
aham iha tat prāktanam sarvam ceṣṭitam ceṣṭitāntaram
4. līlā uvāca devi,
imam deśam dṛṣṭvā,
tvatprasādāt aham iha tat sarvam prāktanam ceṣṭitam ceṣṭitāntaram smarāmi
4. Līlā said: 'O Goddess, by your grace, having seen this very place, I now recall all those past activities, including every other deed, that occurred here.'
इहाभूवमहं जीर्णा शिरालाङ्गी कृशा सिता ।
ब्राह्मणी शुष्कदर्भाग्रभेदरूक्षकरोदरा ॥ ५ ॥
ihābhūvamahaṃ jīrṇā śirālāṅgī kṛśā sitā ,
brāhmaṇī śuṣkadarbhāgrabhedarūkṣakarodarā 5
5. iha abhūvam aham jīrṇā śirālāṅgī kṛśā sitā
brāhmaṇī śuṣkadarbhāgrabhedarūkṣakarodarā
5. aham iha jīrṇā śirālāṅgī kṛśā sitā brāhmaṇī
śuṣkadarbhāgrabhedarūkṣakarodarā abhūvam
5. Here, I was an old, thin, pale Brahmin woman, with a body marked by prominent veins. My hands and stomach were rough from handling and breaking the tips of dry darbha grass.
भर्तुः कुलकरी भार्या दोहमन्थानशालिनी ।
माता सकलपुत्राणामतिथीनां प्रियंकरी ॥ ६ ॥
bhartuḥ kulakarī bhāryā dohamanthānaśālinī ,
mātā sakalaputrāṇāmatithīnāṃ priyaṃkarī 6
6. bhartuḥ kulakarī bhāryā dohamanthānaśālinī
mātā sakalaputrāṇām atithīnām priyaṅkarī
6. bhartuḥ kulakarī bhāryā dohamanthānaśālinī

6. I was a wife devoted to her husband's family, skilled in milking and churning. I was a mother to all my sons and one who pleased guests.
देवद्विजसतां भक्ता सिक्ताङ्गी घृतगोरसैः ।
भर्जनी चरुकुम्भादिभाण्डोपस्करशोधिनी ॥ ७ ॥
devadvijasatāṃ bhaktā siktāṅgī ghṛtagorasaiḥ ,
bharjanī carukumbhādibhāṇḍopaskaraśodhinī 7
7. devadvijasatām bhaktā siktāṅgī ghṛtagorasaiḥ
bharjanī carukumbhādibhāṇḍopaskaraśodhinī
7. devadvijasatām bhaktā ghṛtagorasaiḥ siktāṅgī
bharjanī carukumbhādibhāṇḍopaskaraśodhinī
7. I was devoted (bhaktā) to the gods, Brahmins, and virtuous people, my body often sprinkled with ghee and milk products. I was the one who roasted food and cleaned pots for sacrificial offerings and other utensils.
नित्यमन्नलवाक्तैककाचकम्बुप्रकोष्ठका ।
जामातृदुहितृभ्रातृपितृमातृप्रपूजनी ॥ ८ ॥
nityamannalavāktaikakācakambuprakoṣṭhakā ,
jāmātṛduhitṛbhrātṛpitṛmātṛprapūjanī 8

8. Daily, her forearms bore a single bangle of glass and conch shell, often stained with food particles. She was one who diligently honored sons-in-law, daughters, brothers, fathers, and mothers.
आदेहं सद्मभृत्यैव प्रक्षीणदिनयामिनी ।
वाचं चिरं चिरमिति वादिन्यनिशमाकुला ॥ ९ ॥
ādehaṃ sadmabhṛtyaiva prakṣīṇadinayāminī ,
vācaṃ ciraṃ ciramiti vādinyaniśamākulā 9
9. ādeham sadmabhṛtyā eva prakṣīṇadinayāminī
vācam ciram ciram iti vādinī aniśam ākulā
9. ādeham sadmabhṛtyā eva prakṣīṇadinayāminī
aniśam ākulā ciram ciram iti vācam vādinī
9. Throughout her life, as if merely a servant of the household, her days and nights were spent in exhaustion. Constantly distressed, she would utter, 'Long live, long live!' (referring to her husband).
काहं क इव संसार इति स्वप्नेऽप्यसंकथा ।
जाया श्रोत्रियमूढस्य तादृशस्यैव दुर्धियः ॥ १० ॥
kāhaṃ ka iva saṃsāra iti svapne'pyasaṃkathā ,
jāyā śrotriyamūḍhasya tādṛśasyaiva durdhiyaḥ 10
10. kā aham kaḥ iva saṃsāraḥ iti svapne api asaṃkathā
jāyā śrotriyāmūḍhasya tādṛśasya eva durdhiyaḥ
10. kā aham kaḥ iva saṃsāraḥ iti svapne api asaṃkathā
jāyā tādṛśasya eva durdhiyaḥ śrotriyāmūḍhasya
10. 'Who am I? What is this cycle of rebirth (saṃsāra)?' - such questions never even entered her mind, even in a dream. She was the wife of such a dull-witted and foolish Vedic scholar (śrotriya).
एकनिष्ठा समिच्छाकगोमयेन्धनसंचये ।
म्लानकम्बलसंवीतशिरालकृशगात्रिका ॥ ११ ॥

mlānakambalasaṃvītaśirālakṛśagātrikā 11

11. She was singularly devoted to collecting firewood, vegetables, and cow dung for fuel. Her frail, emaciated body, with visible veins, was wrapped in a faded blanket.
तर्णकीकर्णजाहस्थकृमिनिष्कासतत्परा ।
गृहशाकायनासेकसत्वराहूतकर्परा ॥ १२ ॥
tarṇakīkarṇajāhasthakṛminiṣkāsatatparā ,
gṛhaśākāyanāsekasatvarāhūtakarparā 12
12. tarṇakīkarṇajāhasthakṛminiṣkāsatatparā

12. She was dedicated to extracting worms from the ear-wound of a young calf. And for watering the household vegetable garden, she would quickly summon a water-pot.
नीलनीरतरङ्गान्ततृणतर्पिततर्णिका ।
प्रतिक्षणं गृहद्वारकृतलेपनवर्णका ॥ १३ ॥
nīlanīrataraṅgāntatṛṇatarpitatarṇikā ,
pratikṣaṇaṃ gṛhadvārakṛtalepanavarṇakā 13
13. nīlanīrataraṅgāntatṛṇatarpitatarṇikā |
pratikṣaṇam gṛhadvārakṛtalepanavarṇakā ||
13. nīlanīrataraṅgāntatṛṇatarpitatarṇikā
pratikṣaṇam gṛhadvārakṛtalepanavarṇakā
13. Whose young calves were nourished by the grass found amidst the waves of blue water, and who, moment after moment, had her house-door painted and adorned with auspicious designs.
नीत्यर्थं गृहभृत्यानामादीनकृतवाच्यता ।
मर्यादानियमादब्धेर्वेलेवानिशमच्युता ॥ १४ ॥
nītyarthaṃ gṛhabhṛtyānāmādīnakṛtavācyatā ,
maryādāniyamādabdhervelevāniśamacyutā 14
14. nītyartham gṛhabhṛtyānām ādīnakṛtavācyatā |
maryādāniyamāt abdheḥ velā iva aniśam acyutā ||
14. (sā) nītyartham gṛhabhṛtyānām ādīnakṛtavācyatā
abdheḥ maryādāniyamāt velā iva aniśam acyutā
14. For the sake of proper conduct, she made the speech of her household servants humble and respectful, remaining constantly unwavering, just like the shore of the ocean due to its adherence to boundaries.
जीर्णपर्णसवर्णैककर्णदोलाधिरूढया ।
काष्ठताड्यजराभीतजीववृत्त्येव चिह्निता ॥ १५ ॥
jīrṇaparṇasavarṇaikakarṇadolādhirūḍhayā ,
kāṣṭhatāḍyajarābhītajīvavṛttyeva cihnitā 15
15. jīrṇaparṇasavarṇaikakarṇadolādhirūḍhayā |
kāṣṭhatāḍyajarābhītajīvavṛttyā iva cihnitā ||
15. (sā) jīrṇaparṇasavarṇaikakarṇadolādhirūḍhayā
kāṣṭhatāḍyajarābhītajīvavṛttyā iva cihnitā
15. She was characterized by (the presence of) a woman mounted on a swing made from a single, old, faded, ear-shaped leaf, and as if marked by the daily life of creatures frightened by wooden clappers and old age.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा संचरन्ती सा शिखरिग्रामकोटरे ।
संचरन्त्याः सरस्वत्या दर्शयामास सस्मयम् ॥ १६ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
ityuktvā saṃcarantī sā śikharigrāmakoṭare ,
saṃcarantyāḥ sarasvatyā darśayāmāsa sasmayam 16
16. śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti uktvā saṃcarantī sā śikharigrāma-koṭare
| saṃcarantyāḥ sarasvatyāḥ darśayāmāsa sasmayam ||
16. śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca iti uktvā sā śikharigrāma-koṭare
saṃcarantī saṃcarantyāḥ sarasvatyāḥ sasmayam darśayāmāsa
16. Śrī Vasiṣṭha spoke: Having said this, she, while moving through the hollow of a mountain village, showed (the scene/herself) with a smile to the wandering Sarasvatī.
इयं मे पाटलाखण्डमण्डिता पुष्पवाटिका ।
इयं मे पुष्पितोद्यानमण्डपाशोकवाटिका ॥ १७ ॥
iyaṃ me pāṭalākhaṇḍamaṇḍitā puṣpavāṭikā ,
iyaṃ me puṣpitodyānamaṇḍapāśokavāṭikā 17
17. iyam me pāṭalākhaṇḍamaṇḍitā puṣpavāṭikā
iyam me puṣpitodyānamaṇḍapāśokavāṭikā
17. iyam me puṣpavāṭikā pāṭalākhaṇḍamaṇḍitā
iyam me puṣpitodyānamaṇḍapāśokavāṭikā
17. This is my flower garden, adorned with a section of roses. This is my Ashoka grove, which is like a pavilion within a blossoming garden.
इयं पुष्कीरणीतीरद्रुमाऽऽग्रन्थिततर्णका ।
इयं सा कर्णिकानाम्नी तर्णिका मुक्तपर्णिका ॥ १८ ॥
iyaṃ puṣkīraṇītīradrumā''granthitatarṇakā ,
iyaṃ sā karṇikānāmnī tarṇikā muktaparṇikā 18
18. iyam puṣkariṇītīradrumāgranthitatarṇakā
iyam sā karṇikānāmnī tarṇikā muktaparnikā
18. iyam puṣkariṇītīradrumāgranthitatarṇakā
iyam sā muktaparnikā karṇikānāmnī tarṇikā
18. This is the one whose calves are tied to the trees on the bank of the lotus pond. This is that calf named Karṇikā, whose ears are unadorned.
इयं सा मेऽलसाकीर्णा वराकी जलहारिका ।
अद्याष्टमं दिनं बाष्पक्लिन्नाक्षी परिरोदिति ॥ १९ ॥
iyaṃ sā me'lasākīrṇā varākī jalahārikā ,
adyāṣṭamaṃ dinaṃ bāṣpaklinnākṣī pariroditi 19
19. iyam sā me alasākīrṇā varākī jalahārikā adya
aṣṭamam dinam bāṣpaklinnākṣī pariroditi
19. iyam sā me alasākīrṇā varākī jalahārikā adya
aṣṭamam dinam bāṣpaklinnākṣī pariroditi
19. This is my wretched, weary water-carrier. For eight days now, she has been weeping incessantly, her eyes wet with tears.
इह देवि मया भुक्तमिहोषितमिह स्थितम् ।
इह सुप्तमिहापीतमिह दत्तमिहाहृतम् ॥ २० ॥
iha devi mayā bhuktamihoṣitamiha sthitam ,
iha suptamihāpītamiha dattamihāhṛtam 20
20. iha devi mayā bhuktam iha uṣitam iha sthitam
iha suptam iha āpītam iha dattam iha āhṛtam
20. devi mayā iha bhuktam iha uṣitam iha sthitam
iha suptam iha āpītam iha dattam iha āhṛtam
20. O goddess, it is here that I have eaten, here I have resided, here I have stayed. It is here that I have slept, here I have drunk, here I have given, and here I have taken.
एष मे ज्येष्ठशर्माख्यः पुत्रो रोदिति मन्दिरे ।
एषा मे जङ्गले धेनुर्दोग्ध्री चरति शाद्वलम् ॥ २१ ॥
eṣa me jyeṣṭhaśarmākhyaḥ putro roditi mandire ,
eṣā me jaṅgale dhenurdogdhrī carati śādvalam 21
21. eṣa me jyeṣṭhaśarmākhyaḥ putraḥ roditi mandire
eṣā me jaṅgale dhenuḥ dogdhrī carati śādvalam
21. eṣa me jyeṣṭhaśarmākhyaḥ putraḥ mandire roditi
eṣā me dogdhrī dhenuḥ jaṅgale śādvalam carati
21. This son of mine, named Jyeṣṭhaśarmā, is crying in the house. This milch cow of mine is grazing on the green pasture in the forest.
गृहे वसन्तदाहाय रूक्षक्षारविधूसरम् ।
स्वदेहमिव पञ्चाक्षं पश्येमं प्रघणं मम ॥ २२ ॥
gṛhe vasantadāhāya rūkṣakṣāravidhūsaram ,
svadehamiva pañcākṣaṃ paśyemaṃ praghaṇaṃ mama 22
22. gṛhe vasantadāhāya rūkṣakṣāravidhūsaram svadeham
iva pañcākṣam paśya imam praghaṇam mama
22. mama gṛhe vasantadāhāya rūkṣakṣāravidhūsaram
svadeham iva pañcākṣam imam praghaṇam paśya
22. Look at this porch (praghaṇa) of mine in the house, which is rough, alkaline, and ash-gray from the scorching heat of spring. It is five-sectioned (pañcākṣa), like my own body.
तुम्बीलताभिरुग्राभिः पुष्टाभिरिव वेष्टितम् ।
महानसस्थानमिदं मम देहमिवापरम् ॥ २३ ॥
tumbīlatābhirugrābhiḥ puṣṭābhiriva veṣṭitam ,
mahānasasthānamidaṃ mama dehamivāparam 23
23. tumbīlatābhiḥ ugrābhiḥ puṣṭābhiḥ iva veṣṭitam
mahānasasthānam idam mama deham iva aparam
23. ugrābhiḥ puṣṭābhiḥ tumbīlatābhiḥ iva veṣṭitam
idam mama mahānasasthānam aparam deham iva
23. This kitchen (mahānasasthāna) of mine, surrounded as if by formidable and thriving gourd-creepers, is like another body (deha) for me.
एते रोदनताम्राक्षा बन्धवो भुवि बन्धनम् ।
अङ्गदार्पितरुद्राक्षा आहरन्त्यनलेन्धनम् ॥ २४ ॥
ete rodanatāmrākṣā bandhavo bhuvi bandhanam ,
aṅgadārpitarudrākṣā āharantyanalendhanam 24
24. ete rodanatāmrākṣāḥ bandhavaḥ bhuvi bandhanam
aṅgadārpitrudrākṣāḥ āharanti analendhanam
24. ete rodanatāmrākṣāḥ bandhavaḥ bhuvi bandhanam
(santi) aṅgadārpitrudrākṣāḥ analendhanam āharanti
24. These relatives (bandhava), whose eyes are red from weeping, are a worldly bond (bandhana). Wearing rudrākṣa beads on their armlets, they are bringing fuel (indhana) for the fire (anala).
अनारतं शिलाकच्छे गुच्छाच्छोटनकारिभिः ।
तरङ्गैः स्थगिताकारं स्पृष्टतीरलतादलैः ॥ २५ ॥
anārataṃ śilākacche gucchācchoṭanakāribhiḥ ,
taraṅgaiḥ sthagitākāraṃ spṛṣṭatīralatādalaiḥ 25
25. anāratam śilākacche gucchācchoṭanakāribhiḥ
taraṅgaiḥ sthagitākāram spṛṣṭatīralatādalaiḥ
25. taraṅgaiḥ anāratam śilākacche gucchācchoṭanakāribhiḥ
sthagitākāram spṛṣṭatīralatādalaiḥ
25. By the waves, which incessantly on the rocky bank, pluck clusters, thus obscuring their forms, and touch the leaves of shore creepers.
सीकराकीर्णपर्यन्तशाद्वलस्थलसल्लतैः ।
शिलाफलहकास्फालफेनिलोत्पलसीकरैः ॥ २६ ॥
sīkarākīrṇaparyantaśādvalasthalasallataiḥ ,
śilāphalahakāsphālaphenilotpalasīkaraiḥ 26
26. sīkarākīrṇaparyantaśādvalasthalasallataiḥ
śilāphalakāskhālaphenilotpalasīkaraiḥ
26. taraṅgaiḥ sīkarākīrṇaparyantaśādvalasthalasallataiḥ

26. By the waves, having beautiful creepers on their spray-covered grassy banks at the edge, and producing foamy, lotus-like spray from dashing against rock slabs.
तुषारीकृतमध्याह्नदिवाकरकरोत्करैः ।
फुल्लपुष्पोत्करासारप्रणादोत्कतटद्रुमैः ॥ २७ ॥
tuṣārīkṛtamadhyāhnadivākarakarotkaraiḥ ,
phullapuṣpotkarāsārapraṇādotkataṭadrumaiḥ 27
27. tuṣārīkṛtamadhyāhnadivākarakarotkaraiḥ
phullapuṣpotkarāsārapranādotkataṭadrumaiḥ
27. taraṅgaiḥ tuṣārīkṛtamadhyāhnadivākarakarotkaraiḥ

27. By the waves, that make the multitude of midday sun's rays appear misty, and cause the shore trees to be intensely agitated by the sound of showers of blooming flowers.
विद्रुमैरिव संक्रान्तफुल्लकिंशुककान्तिभिः ।
व्याप्तया पुष्पराशीनां समुल्लासनकारिभिः ॥ २८ ॥
vidrumairiva saṃkrāntaphullakiṃśukakāntibhiḥ ,
vyāptayā puṣparāśīnāṃ samullāsanakāribhiḥ 28
28. vidrumaiḥ iva saṅkrāntaphullakiṃśukakāntibhiḥ
vyāptayā puṣparāśīnām samullāsanakaribhiḥ
28. taraṅgaiḥ vidrumaiḥ iva saṅkrāntaphullakiṃśukakāntibhiḥ
vyāptayā puṣparāśīnām samullāsanakaribhiḥ
28. By the waves, as if by corals, imbued with the splendor of blooming kiṃśuka flowers, and by its pervasive reach, causing the blossoming of heaps of flowers.
उह्यमानफलापूरसुव्यग्रग्रामबालया ।
महाकलकलावर्तमत्तया ग्रामकुल्यया ॥ २९ ॥
uhyamānaphalāpūrasuvyagragrāmabālayā ,
mahākalakalāvartamattayā grāmakulyayā 29

29. By a village stream where village girls are intensely occupied with the abundant fruits carried by its waters, and which is boisterous with great noise and whirlpools.
वेष्टितस्तरलास्फालजलधौततलोपलः ।
घनपत्रतरुच्छन्नच्छायासततशीतलः ॥ ३० ॥
veṣṭitastaralāsphālajaladhautatalopalaḥ ,
ghanapatratarucchannacchāyāsatataśītalaḥ 30

30. It is surrounded, with its low-lying stones washed by agitated, splashing waters, and is constantly cool with shade provided by trees with dense foliage.
अयमालक्ष्यते फुल्ललतावलनसुन्दरः ।
दलद्गुलुच्छकाच्छन्नगवाक्षो गृहमण्डपः ॥ ३१ ॥

31. This house pavilion is seen, beautiful with entwining blooming vines, and whose windows are covered by clusters of bursting flowers.
अत्र मे संस्थितो भर्ता जीवाकाशतयाऽकृतिः ।
चतुःसमुद्रपर्यन्तमेखलाया भुवः पतिः ॥ ३२ ॥
atra me saṃsthito bhartā jīvākāśatayā'kṛtiḥ ,

32. Here resides my husband, who is formless by the very nature of living space, and who is the lord of the earth, which is girdled by the four oceans.
आ स्मृतं पूर्वमेतेन किलासीदभिवाञ्छितम् ।
शीघ्रं स्यामेव राजेति तीव्रसंवेगधर्मिणा ॥ ३३ ॥
ā smṛtaṃ pūrvametena kilāsīdabhivāñchitam ,
śīghraṃ syāmeva rājeti tīvrasaṃvegadharmiṇā 33
33. ā smṛtam pūrvam etena kila āsīt abhivāñchitam
śīghram syām eva rājā iti tīvrasaṃvegadharmiṇā
33. etena tīvrasaṃvegadharmiṇā pūrvam kila ā
abhivāñchitam āsīt śīghram rājā eva syām iti smṛtam
33. Indeed, it was remembered by him that he had previously desired, 'I should quickly become a king.' This was the intrinsic nature (dharma) of that person who possessed intense zeal (tīvrasaṃvega).
दिनैरष्टभिरेवासौ तेन राज्यं समृद्धिमत् ।
चिरकालप्रत्ययदं प्राप्तवान्परमेश्वरि ॥ ३४ ॥
dinairaṣṭabhirevāsau tena rājyaṃ samṛddhimat ,

34. O Supreme Goddess (Parameśvari), within just eight days, he (asau) attained through that (resolve) a prosperous (samṛddhimat) kingdom, one that instilled long-lasting confidence.
अत्रासौ भर्तृजीवो मे स्थितो व्योम्नि गृहे नृपः ।
अदृश्यः खे यथा वायुरामोदो वानिले यथा ॥ ३५ ॥
atrāsau bhartṛjīvo me sthito vyomni gṛhe nṛpaḥ ,
adṛśyaḥ khe yathā vāyurāmodo vānile yathā 35
35. atra asau bhartṛjīvaḥ me sthitaḥ vyomni gṛhe nṛpaḥ
adṛśyaḥ khe yathā vāyuḥ āmodaḥ vā anile yathā
35. atra asau nṛpaḥ me bhartṛjīvaḥ vyomni gṛhe sthitaḥ.
saḥ khe adṛśyaḥ,
yathā vāyuḥ,
vā yathā āmodaḥ anile
35. Here, this king Bhartṛjīva, my husband, is located in the sky, in a (celestial) dwelling. He is invisible (adṛśya) in the space (kha), just as the wind (vāyu) is, or as a fragrance (āmoda) is in the air (anila).
इहैवाङ्गुष्ठमात्रान्ते तद्व्योम्न्येव पदं स्थितम् ।
मद्भर्तृराज्यं समवगतं योजनकोटिभाक् ॥ ३६ ॥
ihaivāṅguṣṭhamātrānte tadvyomnyeva padaṃ sthitam ,
madbhartṛrājyaṃ samavagataṃ yojanakoṭibhāk 36
36. iha eva aṅguṣṭhamātrānte tat vyomni eva padam

36. Indeed, right here, within a space no larger than a thumb (aṅguṣṭhamātrānte), that state (padam) or abode is situated within that very sky (vyomni). My husband's kingdom (bhartṛrājyam) is understood (samavagatam) to encompass millions of yojanas (yojanakoṭibhāk).
आवां खमेव स्वस्थं च भर्तृराज्यं ममेश्वरि ।
पूर्णं सहस्रैः शैलानां महामायेयमातता ॥ ३७ ॥
āvāṃ khameva svasthaṃ ca bhartṛrājyaṃ mameśvari ,
pūrṇaṃ sahasraiḥ śailānāṃ mahāmāyeyamātatā 37
37. āvām kham eva svasthaṁ ca bhartṛrājyaṁ mama īśvari
pūrṇaṁ sahasraiḥ śailānāṁ mahāmāyā iyam ātatā
37. īśvari,
āvām kham eva ca svasthaṁ svaḥ.
mama bhartṛrājyaṁ sahasraiḥ śailānāṁ pūrṇaṁ ca asti.

37. O my Mistress, we two are verily space itself and self-abiding. My husband's kingdom is full of thousands of mountains. This great illusion (māyā) is vast and pervasive.
तद्देवि भर्तृनगरं पूनर्गन्तुं ममेप्सितम् ।
तदेहि तत्र गच्छावः किं दूरं व्यवसायिनाम् ॥ ३८ ॥
taddevi bhartṛnagaraṃ pūnargantuṃ mamepsitam ,
tadehi tatra gacchāvaḥ kiṃ dūraṃ vyavasāyinām 38
38. tat devi bhartṛnagaram punar gantum mama īpsitam
tat ehi tatra gacchāvaḥ kim dūram vyavasāyinām

38. Therefore, O Goddess, I desire to return to my husband's city. So, come, let us go there! For what is distance to those who are resolute?
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा प्रणता देवीं सा प्रविश्याशु मण्डपम् ।
विहंगीव तया साकं पुप्लुवे सिनिभं नमः ॥ ३९ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
ityuktvā praṇatā devīṃ sā praviśyāśu maṇḍapam ,
vihaṃgīva tayā sākaṃ pupluve sinibhaṃ namaḥ 39
39. śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca iti uktvā praṇatā devīm sā praviśya āśu

39. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having spoken thus, she (Līlā) bowed to the Goddess, and quickly entering the pavilion, she flew up with her (Sarasvatī) like a bird into the dark-hued sky.
भिन्नाञ्जनचयप्रख्यं सौम्यैकार्णवसुन्दरम् ।
नारायणाङ्गसदृशं भृङ्गपृष्ठामलच्छवि ॥ ४० ॥
bhinnāñjanacayaprakhyaṃ saumyaikārṇavasundaram ,
nārāyaṇāṅgasadṛśaṃ bhṛṅgapṛṣṭhāmalacchavi 40

40. (namas) bhinnāñjanacayaprakhyam ca asti,

nārāyaṇāṅgasadṛśam ca asti,
bhṛṅgapṛṣṭhāmalacchavi ca asti.
40. (They flew into a sky) resembling a heap of broken collyrium, beautiful like a calm, single ocean, similar to Nārāyaṇa's body, and having a spotless luster like the back of a beetle.
मेघमार्गमतिक्रम्य वातस्कन्धावनिं तथा ।
सौरमार्गमथाक्रम्य चन्द्रमार्गमतीत्य च ॥ ४१ ॥
meghamārgamatikramya vātaskandhāvaniṃ tathā ,
sauramārgamathākramya candramārgamatītya ca 41

41. Having crossed beyond the path of the clouds and similarly the realm of the wind currents, then having traversed the solar path and passed beyond the lunar path,
धुवमार्गोत्तरं गत्वा साध्यानां मार्गमेत्य च ।
सिद्धानां समतीत्योर्वीमुल्लङ्घ्य स्वर्गमण्डलम् ॥ ४२ ॥
dhuvamārgottaraṃ gatvā sādhyānāṃ mārgametya ca ,
siddhānāṃ samatītyorvīmullaṅghya svargamaṇḍalam 42
42. dhuvamārgottaram gatvā sādhyānām mārgam etya ca |
siddhānām samatītya urvīm ullaṅghya svargamaṇḍalam ||
42. dhuvamārgottaram gatvā ca sādhyānām mārgam etya ca
siddhānām urvīm samatītya svargamaṇḍalam ullaṅghya
42. Having gone beyond the path of Dhruva and reached the realm of the Sādhyas, and having completely surpassed the realm of the Siddhas, she transcended the entire celestial sphere (svargamaṇḍalam).
ब्रह्मलोकोत्तरं गत्वा तुषितानां च मण्डलम् ।
गोलोकं शिवलोकं च पितृलोकमतीत्य च ॥ ४३ ॥
brahmalokottaraṃ gatvā tuṣitānāṃ ca maṇḍalam ,
golokaṃ śivalokaṃ ca pitṛlokamatītya ca 43
43. brahmalokottaram gatvā tuṣitānām ca maṇḍalam

43. Having gone beyond Brahmaloka and (reached) the realm of the Tuṣitas, and having passed beyond Goloka, Śivaloka, and Pitṛloka (the realm of ancestors),
विदेहानां सदेहानां लोकानुत्तीर्य दूरगम् ।
दूराद्दूरमथो गत्वा किंचिद्बुद्धा बभूव सा ॥ ४४ ॥
videhānāṃ sadehānāṃ lokānuttīrya dūragam ,
dūrāddūramatho gatvā kiṃcidbuddhā babhūva sā 44
44. videhānām sadehānām lokān uttīrya dūragam | dūrāt
dūram atha u gatvā kiñcit buddhā babhūva sā ||

44. Having transcended the worlds of both the bodiless and the embodied, and then having gone from afar to an even greater distance, she became somewhat enlightened (buddhā).
पश्चादालोकयामास समतीतं नभस्थलम् ।
यावन्न किंचिच्चन्द्रार्कताराद्यालक्ष्यते ह्यधः ॥ ४५ ॥
paścādālokayāmāsa samatītaṃ nabhasthalam ,
yāvanna kiṃciccandrārkatārādyālakṣyate hyadhaḥ 45
45. paścāt ālokayāmāsa samatītam nabhasthalam yāvat
na kiñcit candrārkatārādyā ālakṣyate hi adhaḥ
45. paścāt sā samatītam nabhasthalam ālokayāmāsa yāvat
hi adhaḥ kiñcit candrārkatārādyā na ālakṣyate
45. Afterwards, she gazed at the firmament she had traversed. Indeed, nothing resembling the moon, sun, or stars was perceived there below.
तमस्तिमितगम्भीरमाशाकुहरपूरकम् ।
एकार्णवोदरप्रख्यं शिलोदरघनं स्थितम् ॥ ४६ ॥
tamastimitagambhīramāśākuharapūrakam ,
ekārṇavodaraprakhyaṃ śilodaraghanaṃ sthitam 46
46. tamaḥ timita-gambhīram āśā-kuhara-pūrakam
eka-arṇava-udara-prakhyam śilā-udara-ghanam sthitam
46. tamaḥ timita-gambhīram āśā-kuhara-pūrakam
eka-arṇava-udara-prakhyam śilā-udara-ghanam sthitam
46. The darkness (tamas) was vast and profound, filling the hollows of all directions. It resembled the interior of the primeval ocean (eka-arṇava) and was dense like the inside of a rock, thus it remained.
लीलोवाच ।
तद्देवि भास्करादीनां क्वाधस्तेजो गतं वद ।
शिलाजठरनिष्पन्दं मुष्टिग्राह्यं तमः कुतः ॥ ४७ ॥
līlovāca ,
taddevi bhāskarādīnāṃ kvādhastejo gataṃ vada ,
śilājaṭharaniṣpandaṃ muṣṭigrāhyaṃ tamaḥ kutaḥ 47
47. līlā uvāca tat devi bhāskara-ādīnām kva adhaḥ tejaḥ gatam
vada śilā-jaṭhara-niṣpandam muṣṭi-grāhyam tamaḥ kutaḥ
47. līlā uvāca devi tat vada kva bhāskarādīnām tejaḥ adhaḥ
gatam kutaḥ śilā-jaṭhara-niṣpandam muṣṭi-grāhyam tamaḥ
47. Līlā said: 'O goddess, tell me then, where has the light (tejaḥ) of the sun (bhāskara) and other celestial bodies gone in that nether region? And from where does this darkness (tamas) arise, which is as motionless as the heart of a rock and graspable by the fist?'
श्रीदेव्युवाच ।
एतावतीमिमां व्योम्नः पदवीमागतासि भोः ।
अर्कादीन्यपि तेजांसि यतो दृश्यन्त एव नो ॥ ४८ ॥
śrīdevyuvāca ,
etāvatīmimāṃ vyomnaḥ padavīmāgatāsi bhoḥ ,
arkādīnyapi tejāṃsi yato dṛśyanta eva no 48
48. śrī-devī uvāca etāvatīm imām vyomnaḥ padavīm āgatā
asi bhoḥ arka-ādīni api tejāṃsi yataḥ dṛśyante eva no
48. śrī-devī uvāca bhoḥ tvam etāvatīm imām vyomnaḥ padavīm
āgatā asi yataḥ arka-ādīni tejāṃsi api eva no dṛśyante
48. The venerable goddess said: 'Oh! You have reached this extensive realm of the sky (vyoman), from where (yataḥ) even the lights (tejaḥ) of the sun (arka) and other celestial bodies are indeed no longer visible.'
यथा महान्धकूपाधः खद्योतो नावलोक्यते ।
पृष्ठगेन तथेहातो नाधः सूर्योऽवलोक्यते ॥ ४९ ॥
yathā mahāndhakūpādhaḥ khadyoto nāvalokyate ,
pṛṣṭhagena tathehāto nādhaḥ sūryo'valokyate 49
49. yathā mahāndhakūpādhaḥ khadyotaḥ na avalokyate
pṛṣṭhagena tathā iha ataḥ na adhaḥ sūryaḥ avalokyate
49. yathā mahāndhakūpādhaḥ khadyotaḥ na avalokyate
tathā iha ataḥ pṛṣṭhagena sūryaḥ adhaḥ na avalokyate
49. Just as a firefly is not perceived at the bottom of a great dark well, similarly, for one who has gone beyond this point, the sun is no longer perceived below.
लीलोवाच ।
अहो नु पदवीं दूरमावामेतामुपागते ।
सूर्योऽप्यधोणुकणवन्न मनागपि लक्ष्यते ॥ ५० ॥
līlovāca ,
aho nu padavīṃ dūramāvāmetāmupāgate ,
sūryo'pyadhoṇukaṇavanna manāgapi lakṣyate 50
50. Līlā uvāca | aho nu padavīm dūram āvām etām upāgate
| sūryaḥ api adhoṇukaṇavat na manāk api lakṣyate ||
50. Līlā uvāca aho nu āvām etām dūram padavīm upāgate
sūryaḥ api adhoṇukaṇavat manāk api na lakṣyate
50. Līlā said: 'Oh, indeed, we two have come a long way on this path. The sun is not perceived even slightly, appearing like a mere speck beneath us.'
इत उत्तरमन्या स्यात्पदवी का नु कीदृशी ।
कथं च मातरेतव्या कथ्यतामिति देवि मे ॥ ५१ ॥
ita uttaramanyā syātpadavī kā nu kīdṛśī ,
kathaṃ ca mātaretavyā kathyatāmiti devi me 51
51. itaḥ uttaram anyā syāt padavī kā nu kīdṛśī |
katham ca mātar etavyā kathyatām iti devi me ||

itaḥ uttaram anyā padavī kā,
nu kīdṛśī syāt? ca katham etavyā iti me kathyatām
51. From here, what other path could there be, and of what nature? And how, O mother, should it be traversed? Please tell me this, O Goddess.
श्रीदेव्युवाच ।
इत उत्तरमग्रे ते ब्रह्माण्डपुटकर्परम् ।
यस्य चन्द्रादयो नाम धूलिलेशाः समुत्थिताः ॥ ५२ ॥
śrīdevyuvāca ,
ita uttaramagre te brahmāṇḍapuṭakarparam ,
yasya candrādayo nāma dhūlileśāḥ samutthitāḥ 52
52. Śrīdevī uvāca | itaḥ uttaram agre te brahmāṇḍapuṭakarparam
| yasya candrādayaḥ nāma dhūlileśāḥ samutthitāḥ ||
52. Śrīdevī uvāca itaḥ uttaram agre te brahmāṇḍapuṭakarparam
(asti) yasya candrādayaḥ nāma dhūlileśāḥ samutthitāḥ (santi)
52. The Resplendent Goddess said: 'Beyond this point, ahead of you, lies the outer shell of the cosmic egg (brahmāṇḍa). Of this shell, the moon and other celestial bodies are merely tiny dust particles that have arisen.'
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इति प्रकथयन्त्यौ ते प्राप्ते ब्रह्माण्डकर्परम् ।
भ्रमर्याविव शैलस्य कुड्यं निबिडमण्डपम् ॥ ५३ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
iti prakathayantyau te prāpte brahmāṇḍakarparam ,
bhramaryāviva śailasya kuḍyaṃ nibiḍamaṇḍapam 53
53. śrī vasiṣṭha uvāca iti prakathayantyau te prāpte
brahmāṇḍa-karparam bhramaryau iva śailasya kuḍyam nibiḍa-maṇḍapam
53. śrī vasiṣṭha uvāca te iti prakathayantyau śailasya
nibiḍa-maṇḍapam kuḍyam bhramaryau iva brahmāṇḍa-karparam prāpte
53. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: As they were thus speaking, those two reached the shell of the universe (brahmāṇḍa), just as two female bees might reach a thick, dense arbor (maṇḍapa) on the wall of a mountain.
अक्लेशेनैव ते तस्मान्निर्गते गगनादिव ।
निश्चयस्थं हि यद्वस्तु तद्वज्रगुरु नेतरत् ॥ ५४ ॥
akleśenaiva te tasmānnirgate gaganādiva ,
niścayasthaṃ hi yadvastu tadvajraguru netarat 54
54. akleśena eva te tasmāt nirgate gaganāt iva
niścayastham hi yat vastu tat vajraguru na itarat

54. Those two emerged from it effortlessly, as if from open space. Indeed, whatever thing is founded on firm conviction (niścaya) is unshakeable (vajraguru); nothing else is.
निरावरणविज्ञाना सा ददर्श ततस्ततम् ।
जलाद्यावरणं पारे ब्रह्माण्डस्यातिभासुरम् ॥ ५५ ॥
nirāvaraṇavijñānā sā dadarśa tatastatam ,
jalādyāvaraṇaṃ pāre brahmāṇḍasyātibhāsuram 55
55. nirāvaraṇa-vijñānā sā dadarśa tataḥ tatam
jalādi-āvaraṇam pāre brahmāṇḍasya atibhāsuram
55. tataḥ nirāvaraṇa-vijñānā sā brahmāṇḍasya pāre
tatam atibhāsuram jalādi-āvaraṇam dadarśa
55. Then, she, possessing unobstructed insight (nirāvaraṇa-vijñāna), saw, beyond the universe (brahmāṇḍa), an extensive and extremely brilliant covering of water and other elements (jalādi-āvaraṇa).
ब्रह्माण्डाद्दशगुणतस्तोयं तत्र व्यवस्थितम् ।
आस्थितं वेष्टयित्वा तु त्वगिवाक्षोटपृष्ठगा ॥ ५६ ॥
brahmāṇḍāddaśaguṇatastoyaṃ tatra vyavasthitam ,
āsthitaṃ veṣṭayitvā tu tvagivākṣoṭapṛṣṭhagā 56
56. brahmāṇḍāt daśaguṇataḥ toyam tatra vyavasthitam
āsthitam veṣṭayitvā tu tvak iva akṣoṭa-pṛṣṭhagā
56. tatra brahmāṇḍāt daśaguṇataḥ toyam vyavasthitam (asti) tu
tvak iva akṣoṭa-pṛṣṭhagā (toyam) veṣṭayitvā āsthitam (asti)
56. Water, tenfold the size of the universe (brahmāṇḍa), was situated there. Moreover, it was located, enveloping (the universe) just like the skin covering the surface of a walnut.
तस्माद्दशगुणो वह्निस्तस्माद्दशगुणोऽनिलः ।
ततो दशगुणं व्योम ततः परममम्बरम् ॥ ५७ ॥
tasmāddaśaguṇo vahnistasmāddaśaguṇo'nilaḥ ,
tato daśaguṇaṃ vyoma tataḥ paramamambaram 57
57. tasmāt daśaguṇaḥ vahniḥ tasmāt daśaguṇaḥ anilaḥ
tataḥ daśaguṇam vyoma tataḥ paramam ambaram

57. Than [the preceding element], fire is ten times greater. Than that [fire], wind is ten times greater. Than that [wind], space (vyoma) is ten times greater. Beyond that [space] is the supreme space (ambaram).
तस्मिन्परमके व्योम्नि मध्याद्यन्तविकल्पनाः ।
न काश्चन समुद्यन्ति वन्ध्यापुत्रकथा इव ॥ ५८ ॥
tasminparamake vyomni madhyādyantavikalpanāḥ ,
na kāścana samudyanti vandhyāputrakathā iva 58
58. tasmin paramake vyomni madhyādyantavikalpanāḥ

58. In that supreme space (vyoma), no conceptions of beginning, middle, or end whatsoever arise, just like tales of a barren woman's son.
केवलं विततं शान्तं तदनादि गतभ्रमम् ।
आद्यन्तमध्यरहितं महत्यात्मनि तिष्ठति ॥ ५९ ॥
kevalaṃ vitataṃ śāntaṃ tadanādi gatabhramam ,
ādyantamadhyarahitaṃ mahatyātmani tiṣṭhati 59
59. kevalam vitatam śāntam tat anādi gatabhramam
ādyantamadhyarahitam mahati ātmani tiṣṭhati
59. tat kevalam vitatam śāntam anādi gatabhramam
ādyantamadhyarahitam mahati ātmani tiṣṭhati
59. That [supreme reality] is pure, pervasive, peaceful, without beginning, free from delusion, and devoid of beginning, middle, or end. It abides in the great Self (ātman).
आकल्पमुत्तमबलेन शिला पतेच्चेत्तस्मिन्बलात्पतगराडपि चोत्पतेच्चेत् ।
तद्योजनं न लभते विमलेऽम्बरेऽन्तर्माकल्पमेकजवगोऽप्यथ मारुतोऽपि ॥ ६० ॥
ākalpamuttamabalena śilā pateccettasminbalātpatagarāḍapi cotpateccet ,
tadyojanaṃ na labhate vimale'mbare'ntarmākalpamekajavago'pyatha māruto'pi 60
60. ākalpam uttamabalena śilā patet cet tasmin
balāt patagarāṭ api ca utpatet cet tat
yojanam na labhate vimale ambare antaram
mākalpam ekajavagaḥ api atha mārutaḥ api
60. cet ākalpam uttamabalena śilā patet .
cet tasmmin balāt patagarāṭ api ca utpatet .
atha mārutaḥ api ekajavagaḥ api [san] mākalpam [utpatet] .
[tathāpi] vimale ambare antaram tat yojanam na labhate
60. Even if a stone were to fall with utmost force for an entire cosmic eon (kalpa) into that [supreme space], and even if the king of birds (patagarāṭ) or the wind were to fly upwards with force for an entire cosmic eon, they would not reach its limit (antaram) in that pure space (ambaram), not even covering a single yojana (yojana), even if moving with a continuous speed (ekajavaga).
