चिरमाराधितानेन विदूरथनृपारिणा ।
अहं पुत्रि जयार्थेन न विदूरथभूभृता ॥ ३ ॥

3. Śrī Sarasvatī said: "O daughter, I have been worshipped for a long time by this enemy of King Vidūratha, for the sake of victory, but not by King Vidūratha himself."
तेनासावेव जयति जीयते च विदूरथः ।
ज्ञप्तिरन्तर्गता संविदेतां मां यो यदा यथा ॥ ४ ॥
tenāsāveva jayati jīyate ca vidūrathaḥ ,
jñaptirantargatā saṃvidetāṃ māṃ yo yadā yathā 4
4. tena asau eva jayati jīyate ca vidūrathaḥ
jñaptiḥ antargatā saṃvid etām mām yaḥ yadā yathā
4. tena asau eva jayati ca vidūrathaḥ jīyate etām
mām jñaptiḥ antargatā saṃvid yaḥ yadā yathā
4. Therefore, that very person (the enemy) is victorious, and Vidūratha is defeated. This is my inherent understanding (jñapti), my inner consciousness (saṃvid): whoever directs me, whenever, and however...
प्रेरयत्याशु तत्तस्य तदा संपादयाम्यहम् ।
यो यथा प्रेरयति मां तस्य तिष्ठामि तत्फला ॥ ५ ॥
prerayatyāśu tattasya tadā saṃpādayāmyaham ,
yo yathā prerayati māṃ tasya tiṣṭhāmi tatphalā 5
5. prerayati āśu tat tasya tadā sampādayāmi aham
yaḥ yathā prerayati mām tasya tiṣṭhāmi tatphalā
5. āśu tat tasya tadā aham sampādayāmi yaḥ
mām yathā prerayati tasya tatphalā tiṣṭhāmi
5. Whoever directs (prerayati) me, in whatever manner and at whatever time, I quickly (āśu) accomplish that (result) for him (tasya). Whoever directs (prerayati) me (mām) in whatever way (yathā), for him (tasya) I remain (tiṣṭhāmi) yielding precisely that fruit (tatphalā).
न स्वभावोऽन्यतां धत्ते वह्नेरौष्ण्यमिवैष मे ।
अनेन मुक्त एव स्यामहमित्यस्मि भाविता ॥ ६ ॥
na svabhāvo'nyatāṃ dhatte vahnerauṣṇyamivaiṣa me ,
anena mukta eva syāmahamityasmi bhāvitā 6
6. na svabhāvaḥ anyatām dhatte vahneḥ auṣṇyam iva
eṣa me anena muktaḥ eva syām aham iti asmi bhāvitā
6. eṣa me svabhāvaḥ vahneḥ auṣṇyam iva anyatām na
dhatte aham anena eva muktaḥ syām iti asmi bhāvitā
6. My intrinsic nature (svabhāva) does not assume otherness, just as the heat (auṣṇyam) of fire (vahneḥ) does not. I (aham) am convinced (bhāvitā asmi) by the thought: 'I (aham) shall indeed (eva) be liberated (mokṣa) by this one (anena).'
प्रतिभारूपिणी तेन बाले मुक्तो भविष्यति ।
एतदीयः स्वयं शत्रुः सिन्धुर्नाम महीपतिः ॥ ७ ॥
pratibhārūpiṇī tena bāle mukto bhaviṣyati ,
etadīyaḥ svayaṃ śatruḥ sindhurnāma mahīpatiḥ 7
7. pratibhārūpiṇī tena bāle muktaḥ bhaviṣyati
etadīyaḥ svayam śatruḥ sindhuḥ nāma mahīpatiḥ
7. bāle tena pratibhārūpiṇī muktaḥ bhaviṣyati
etadīyaḥ svayam śatruḥ nāma sindhuḥ mahīpatiḥ
7. O child (Rati), by him (Krishna), he (Kāma, reborn as Pradyumna) will be liberated as a counterpart (or image). His personal enemy, King Sindhu, is the ruler of the earth.
जयाम्यहं स्यां संग्राम इत्यनेनास्मि पूजिता ।
तस्माद्विदूरथो देहं तत्प्राप्य सह भार्यया ॥ ८ ॥
jayāmyahaṃ syāṃ saṃgrāma ityanenāsmi pūjitā ,
tasmādvidūratho dehaṃ tatprāpya saha bhāryayā 8
8. jayāmi aham syām saṅgrāme iti anena asmi pūjitā
tasmāt vidūrathaḥ deham tat prāpya saha bhāryayā
8. aham jayāmi syām saṅgrāme iti anena asmi pūjitā
tasmāt vidūrathaḥ tat deham bhāryayā saha prāpya
8. I am victorious, I am present in battle; by this (nature), I am worshipped. Therefore, Vidūratha, having obtained that body with his wife...
त्वयानया च कालेन बाले मुक्तो भविष्यति ।
एतदीयः स्वयं शत्रुः सिन्धुर्नाम महीपतिः ॥ ९ ॥
tvayānayā ca kālena bāle mukto bhaviṣyati ,
etadīyaḥ svayaṃ śatruḥ sindhurnāma mahīpatiḥ 9

9. O child, by you, by this (feminine entity), and by time, he will be liberated. His own enemy, King Sindhu, is the ruler of the earth.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
हत्वैनं वसुधापीठे जयी राज्यं करिष्यति ।
एवं देव्यां वदन्त्या तु बलयोर्युध्यमानयोः ॥ १० ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
hatvainaṃ vasudhāpīṭhe jayī rājyaṃ kariṣyati ,
evaṃ devyāṃ vadantyā tu balayoryudhyamānayoḥ 10

kariṣyati evam devyām vadantyā tu balayoḥ yudhyamānayoḥ

10. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: 'Having killed him on the surface of the earth, the victor will rule the kingdom. This happened as the goddess was speaking, and while the two armies were engaged in battle.'
रविर्द्रष्टुमिवाश्चर्यमाजगामोदयाचलम् ।
चेलुस्तिमिरसंघाता बलानीवारिरूपिणः ॥ ११ ॥

celustimirasaṃghātā balānīvārirūpiṇaḥ 11
11. raviḥ draṣṭum iva āścaryam ājagāma udayācalam
celuḥ timirasaṃghātāḥ balāni iva arirūpiṇaḥ
11. raviḥ udayācalam āścaryam draṣṭum iva ājagāma
timirasaṃghātāḥ arirūpiṇaḥ balāni iva celuḥ
11. The sun arrived at the eastern mountain as if to witness a marvel. The dense masses of darkness dispersed, like armies of enemies.
असृजन्जीवसङ्घान्ये संध्यायां तारका इव ।
शनैः प्रकटतां जग्मुर्नीलाकाशाद्रिभूमयः ॥ १२ ॥
asṛjanjīvasaṅghānye saṃdhyāyāṃ tārakā iva ,
śanaiḥ prakaṭatāṃ jagmurnīlākāśādribhūmayaḥ 12
12. asṛjan jīvasaṅghān ye saṃdhyāyām tārakāḥ iva
śanaiḥ prakaṭatām jagmuḥ nīlākāśādribhūmayaḥ
12. nīlākāśādribhūmayaḥ ye saṃdhyāyām tārakāḥ iva
jīvasaṅghān asṛjan śanaiḥ prakaṭatām jagmuḥ
12. The blue sky, mountains, and lands, which slowly came into full view, also emitted multitudes of living beings at dawn, like scattered stars.
भुवनं कज्जलाम्भोधेरिवोत्क्षिप्तमराजत ।
पेतुः कनकनिःस्यन्दसुन्दरा रविरश्मयः ॥ १३ ॥
bhuvanaṃ kajjalāmbhodherivotkṣiptamarājata ,
petuḥ kanakaniḥsyandasundarā raviraśmayaḥ 13
13. bhuvanam kajjalāmbhodheḥ iva utkṣiptam arājata
petuḥ kanakaniḥsyandasuṃdarāḥ raviraśmayaḥ

13. The world shone as if it had been lifted out of an ocean of kohl-like darkness. The sun's rays, beautiful like streams of flowing gold, descended.
शैलेषु वरवीरेषु रणे रक्तच्छटा इव ।
अदृश्यत ततो व्योम तथा रणमहीतलम् ॥ १४ ॥
śaileṣu varavīreṣu raṇe raktacchaṭā iva ,
adṛśyata tato vyoma tathā raṇamahītalam 14

14. Then the sky appeared, and likewise the battlefield, both seemingly streaked with red, like mountains streaked with blood, resembling valiant heroes on the battleground.
बाहुभिर्भ्रान्तभुजगं प्रभाभिः कीर्णकाञ्चनम् ।
कुण्डलैः कीर्णरत्नौघं शिरोभिर्दृष्टपङ्कजम् ॥ १५ ॥
bāhubhirbhrāntabhujagaṃ prabhābhiḥ kīrṇakāñcanam ,
kuṇḍalaiḥ kīrṇaratnaughaṃ śirobhirdṛṣṭapaṅkajam 15
15. bāhubhiḥ bhrānta-bhujagam prabhābhiḥ kīrṇa-kāñcanam
kuṇḍalaiḥ kīrṇa-ratnaugham śirobhiḥ dṛṣṭa-paṅkajam
15. bāhubhiḥ bhrānta-bhujagam prabhābhiḥ kīrṇa-kāñcanam

15. The battlefield was characterized by arms that writhed like snakes, by radiance like scattered gold, by earrings like scattered heaps of jewels, and by heads that appeared like lotuses.
आयुधैः खड्गनीरन्ध्रं शरैः शलभनिर्भरम् ।
रक्ताभास्थिरसंध्याढ्यं ससिद्धपुरुषं शवैः ॥ १६ ॥
āyudhaiḥ khaḍganīrandhraṃ śaraiḥ śalabhanirbharam ,
raktābhāsthirasaṃdhyāḍhyaṃ sasiddhapuruṣaṃ śavaiḥ 16
16. āyudhaiḥ khaḍga-nīrandhram śaraiḥ śalabha-nirbharam
raktābhā-sthira-sandhyā-āḍhyam śavaiḥ sa-siddha-puruṣam
16. āyudhaiḥ khaḍga-nīrandhram śaraiḥ śalabha-nirbharam
raktābhā-sthira-sandhyā-āḍhyam śavaiḥ sa-siddha-puruṣam
16. It was dense with swords acting as weapons, teeming with arrows like swarms of locusts, rich with a constant reddish twilight, and filled with the corpses of accomplished men (puruṣa).
हारैः ससर्पनिर्मोकं कटैरिद्धं सुसंकुलम् ।
लसल्लतं पताकाभिरुरुभिः कृततोरणम् ॥ १७ ॥
hāraiḥ sasarpanirmokaṃ kaṭairiddhaṃ susaṃkulam ,
lasallataṃ patākābhirurubhiḥ kṛtatoraṇam 17
17. hāraiḥ sa-sarpa-nirmokam kaṭaiḥ iddham su-saṅkulam
patākābhiḥ lasat-latam urubhiḥ kṛta-toraṇam

17. It was adorned with necklaces resembling snake sloughs; the scene was greatly tumultuous due to prominent hips; it had banners that gleamed like creepers, and thighs that formed gateways.
हस्तैः पादैः पल्लवितं शरैः शरवणोपमम् ।
शस्त्रांशुशाद्वलश्यामं शस्त्रपूरैः सकैतकम् ॥ १८ ॥
hastaiḥ pādaiḥ pallavitaṃ śaraiḥ śaravaṇopamam ,
śastrāṃśuśādvalaśyāmaṃ śastrapūraiḥ sakaitakam 18
18. hastaiḥ pādaiḥ pallavitam śaraiḥ śaravaṇa-upamam
śastra-aṃśu-śādvala-śyāmam śastra-pūraiḥ sa-ketakam
18. hastaiḥ pādaiḥ pallavitam śaraiḥ śaravaṇa-upamam
śastra-aṃśu-śādvala-śyāmam śastra-pūraiḥ sa-ketakam
18. It blossomed with hands and feet, resembled a thicket of arrows (śara) due to the many shafts, appeared dark like a green meadow made of weapon-rays, and was adorned with countless weapons resembling Ketaka flowers.
कीर्णमायुधमालाभिरुन्मत्तमिव भैरवम् ।
फुल्लाशोकवनाकारं शस्त्रसंघट्टवह्निभिः ॥ १९ ॥
kīrṇamāyudhamālābhirunmattamiva bhairavam ,
phullāśokavanākāraṃ śastrasaṃghaṭṭavahnibhiḥ 19
19. kīrṇam āyudhamālābhiḥ unmattam iva bhairavam
phullāśokavanākāram śastrasaṅghaṭṭavahnibhiḥ

19. It was covered with arrays of weapons, appearing frenzied like Bhairava, and resembled a blossoming Ashoka forest due to the fires ignited by the clash of weapons.
उदघुंघुमहाशब्दैर्विद्रवत्सिद्धनायकैः ।
सौवर्णनगराकारं बालार्ककचितायुधैः ॥ २० ॥
udaghuṃghumahāśabdairvidravatsiddhanāyakaiḥ ,
sauvarṇanagarākāraṃ bālārkakacitāyudhaiḥ 20
20. udaghuṃghumahāśabdaiḥ vidravatsiddhanāyakaiḥ
sauvarṇanagarākāram bālārkakacitāyudhaiḥ

20. It echoed with tremendous 'ghuṃghuṃ' sounds, causing the chiefs of the Siddhas to flee, and it appeared like a golden city, with weapons shining like the rising sun.
प्रासासिशक्तिचक्रर्ष्टिमुद्गरारणिताम्बरम् ।
वहद्रक्तनदीरंहः प्रोह्यमानशवोत्करम् ॥ २१ ॥

21. Its sky was made to resound by spears, swords, lances (śakti), discs, javelins (ṛṣṭi), and hammers (mudgara); it featured swift-flowing rivers of blood that swept away piles of corpses.
भुशुण्डीशक्तिकुन्तासिशूलपाषाणसंकुलम् ।
शूलशस्त्राहतिच्छन्नकबन्धपतनान्वितम् ॥ २२ ॥

22. It was crowded with "bhuśuṇḍi" weapons, lances (śakti), spears (kunta), swords, pikes (śūla), and stones; and it featured the falling of headless trunks, overwhelmed by the impact of pikes and other weapons.
कालताण्डववेतालकुलारब्धहलारवम् ।
शून्ये रणाङ्गणे दीप्तौ पद्मसिन्ध्वो रथौ चलौ ॥ २३ ॥
kālatāṇḍavavetālakulārabdhahalāravam ,
śūnye raṇāṅgaṇe dīptau padmasindhvo rathau calau 23

23. On the empty battlefield, the two moving, resplendent chariots of Padma and Sindhu sounded with a terrible roar, as if it were initiated by a host of vetālas (goblins) performing the dance of death (kāla tāṇḍava).
अदृश्येतां नभश्चिह्नौ चन्द्रसूर्यौ दिवीव तौ ।
चक्रशूलभुशुण्ड्यृष्टिप्रासायुधसमाकुला ॥ २४ ॥
adṛśyetāṃ nabhaścihnau candrasūryau divīva tau ,
cakraśūlabhuśuṇḍyṛṣṭiprāsāyudhasamākulā 24
24. adṛśyetām nabhaḥ cihnau candrasūryau divi iva
tau cakraśūlabhuśuṇḍyṛṣṭiprāsāyudhasamākulā

24. They (the chariots/warriors) appeared like the celestial bodies, the Moon and Sun, in the sky, completely filled with (weapons like) discs, lances, short guns (bhuśuṇḍi), spears, and javelins.
सहस्रेण सहस्रेण वीराणां परिवारितौ ।
विचरन्तौ यथाकामं मण्डलैर्विततारवैः ॥ २५ ॥
sahasreṇa sahasreṇa vīrāṇāṃ parivāritau ,
vicarantau yathākāmaṃ maṇḍalairvitatāravaiḥ 25
25. sahasreṇa sahasreṇa vīrāṇām parivāritau
vicarantau yathākāmam maṇḍaiḥ vitatāravaiḥ

25. Surrounded by thousands upon thousands of heroes, they (the chariots/warriors) moved about at will, with their troop formations (maṇḍala) echoing with widespread roars.
सचीत्कारमहाचक्रपिष्टानेकमृतामृतौ ।
तरन्तौ रक्तसरितौ मत्तवारणलीलया ॥ २६ ॥
sacītkāramahācakrapiṣṭānekamṛtāmṛtau ,
tarantau raktasaritau mattavāraṇalīlayā 26

26. They (the chariots/warriors), having crushed countless dead and undead beings beneath their great, screeching wheels, crossed the rivers of blood with the majestic gait of intoxicated elephants.
केशशैवलसंपन्ने चक्रचक्रजलेन्दुके ।
वहच्चक्राहतिक्षोभपातिताकुलवारणौ ॥ २७ ॥
keśaśaivalasaṃpanne cakracakrajalenduke ,
vahaccakrāhatikṣobhapātitākulavāraṇau 27

27. In a battlefield made rich with hair (of fallen warriors) resembling algae, and where wheels (of chariots) are like whirlpools and moon-like reflections in the water, the two (heroes) caused agitated elephants to fall due to the disturbance from the impact of their moving wheels.
मणिमुक्ताझणत्काररणत्कूबरकारवौ ।
वाताहतपताकाग्रपटत्पटपटारवौ ॥ २८ ॥
maṇimuktājhaṇatkāraraṇatkūbarakāravau ,
vātāhatapatākāgrapaṭatpaṭapaṭāravau 28

28. The two (heroes), whose chariot poles rattled with the clanging of jewels and pearls, and whose banner tips, struck by the wind, created a flapping, rustling sound.
अनुयातौ महावीरैर्भूरिमिर्भीरुसैनिकैः ।
धारा वमद्भिः कुन्तानां शराणां धनुषामपि ॥ २९ ॥
anuyātau mahāvīrairbhūrimirbhīrusainikaiḥ ,
dhārā vamadbhiḥ kuntānāṃ śarāṇāṃ dhanuṣāmapi 29

29. The two (heroes) were followed by many great warriors and fearful soldiers, who were continuously discharging streams of spears, arrows, and even bows.
शक्तीनां प्रासशङ्कूनां चक्राणां कचतां रणे ।
तत्र तौ क्षणमावृत्ये मण्डले भूमिकुण्डले ॥ ३० ॥
śaktīnāṃ prāsaśaṅkūnāṃ cakrāṇāṃ kacatāṃ raṇe ,
tatra tau kṣaṇamāvṛtye maṇḍale bhūmikuṇḍale 30
30. śaktīnām prāsaśaṅkūnām cakrāṇām kacatām raṇe

30. Amidst spears, lances, and discuses glittering in battle, the two (heroes) there for a moment moved in circles, forming a pattern like an earring on the ground.
उभौ व्यतिबभूवाते संमुखावायुधावुभौ ।
नाराचधारानिकरविक्षेपकरकध्वनौ ॥ ३१ ॥

nārācadhārānikaravikṣepakarakadhvanau 31

33. Their arrows became like stone clubs, stretching across the sky. Some had sword-like tips, while others had mace-like tips.

34. Some arrows had sharp disc-like tips, others had axe-like tips. Some were shaped like spears, while others had tips like spikes and stones. Some even had trident-like forms, as massive as large boulders.

35. Then, the arrows fell like masses of rocks dislodged by the wind of cosmic dissolution. At that moment, their encounter became as tumultuous as the ocean surging during the cosmic dissolution.
