अथ राज्ञां युयुत्सूनां भटानां मन्त्रिणामपि ।
नभसः प्रेक्षकाणां च तत्रेमाः प्रोदगुर्गिरः ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
atha rājñāṃ yuyutsūnāṃ bhaṭānāṃ mantriṇāmapi ,
nabhasaḥ prekṣakāṇāṃ ca tatremāḥ prodagurgiraḥ 1

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, from among the kings, the eager warriors, the soldiers, the ministers, and even the spectators observing from the sky, these voices arose there.
चलत्पद्मं सर इव वहद्विहगमेव च ।
नभः शूरशिरःकीर्णं भाति तारकिताकृति ॥ २ ॥
calatpadmaṃ sara iva vahadvihagameva ca ,
nabhaḥ śūraśiraḥkīrṇaṃ bhāti tārakitākṛti 2
2. calatpadmam saraḥ iva vahad vihagam eva ca
nabhaḥ śūraśiraḥkīrṇam bhāti tārakitākṛti
2. śūraśiraḥkīrṇam nabhaḥ calatpadmam saraḥ
iva ca vahadvihagam eva tārakitākṛti bhāti
2. The sky, strewn with the heads of heroes, shines with the appearance of being star-studded, just like a lake with its swaying lotuses and moving birds.
पश्य रक्तपृषत्पूरसिन्दूरारुणमारुतैः ।
सांध्या इव विभान्त्येते मध्याह्नेऽम्बुदभानवः ॥ ३ ॥
paśya raktapṛṣatpūrasindūrāruṇamārutaiḥ ,
sāṃdhyā iva vibhāntyete madhyāhne'mbudabhānavaḥ 3
3. paśya rakta-pṛṣat-pūra-sindūra-aruṇa-mārutaiḥ
sāndhyāḥ iva vibhānti ete madhyāhne ambudabhānavāḥ
3. paśya ete rakta-pṛṣat-pūra-sindūra-aruṇa-mārutaiḥ
madhyāhne sāndhyāḥ iva ambudabhānavāḥ vibhānti
3. Behold! These sun-like clouds, made crimson by winds laden with abundant drops of blood and vermilion, shine brightly at midday, appearing as if they were clouds of twilight.
किमिदं भगवन्व्योम पलालभरितं स्थितम् ।
नेदं पलालं वीराणामेते शरभराम्बुदाः ॥ ४ ॥
kimidaṃ bhagavanvyoma palālabharitaṃ sthitam ,
nedaṃ palālaṃ vīrāṇāmete śarabharāmbudāḥ 4
4. kim idam bhagavan vyoma palālabharitam sthitam
na idam palālam vīrāṇām ete śarabharāmudāḥ
4. bhagavan idam vyoma palālabharitam sthitam kim? na idam palālam,
ete vīrāṇām śarabharāmudāḥ.
4. What is this, O Lord, the sky appearing filled with straw? This is not straw; these are clouds of arrows belonging to the heroes.
यावन्तो भुवि सिच्यन्ते रुधिरे रणरेणवः ।
तावन्त्यब्दसहस्राणि भटानामास्पदं दिवि ॥ ५ ॥
yāvanto bhuvi sicyante rudhire raṇareṇavaḥ ,
tāvantyabdasahasrāṇi bhaṭānāmāspadaṃ divi 5
5. yāvantaḥ bhuvi sicyante rudhire raṇareṇavaḥ
tāvanti abdasahasrāṇi bhaṭānām āspadam divi
5. yāvantaḥ raṇareṇavaḥ bhuvi rudhire sicyante,
tāvanti abdasahasrāṇi bhaṭānām āspadam divi
5. For as many particles of battle-dust as are moistened with blood upon the earth, for so many thousands of years do the warriors find their abode in heaven.
मा भैष्ट नैते निस्त्रिंशा नीलोत्पलदलत्विषः ।
अमी वीरावलोकिन्या लक्ष्म्या नयनविभ्रमाः ॥ ६ ॥
mā bhaiṣṭa naite nistriṃśā nīlotpaladalatviṣaḥ ,
amī vīrāvalokinyā lakṣmyā nayanavibhramāḥ 6
6. mā bhaiṣṭa na ete nistriṃśāḥ nīlotpaladalatviṣaḥ
amī vīrāvalokinyā lakṣmyā nayanavibhramāḥ
6. mā bhaiṣṭa! ete nistriṃśāḥ nīlotpaladalatviṣaḥ na (santi).
amī vīrāvalokinyā lakṣmyā nayanavibhramāḥ (santi).
6. Do not fear! These are not swords, even though they possess the luster of blue lotus petals. These are the darting glances of the goddess Lakṣmī, who gazes upon heroes.
वीरालिङ्गनलोलानां नितम्बे सुरयोषिताम् ।
मेखलाः शिथिलीकर्तुं प्रवृत्तः कुसुमायुधः ॥ ७ ॥
vīrāliṅganalolānāṃ nitambe surayoṣitām ,
mekhalāḥ śithilīkartuṃ pravṛttaḥ kusumāyudhaḥ 7
7. vīrāliṅganalolānām nitambe surayoṣitām
mekhalāḥ śithilīkartum pravṛttaḥ kusumāyudhaḥ
7. kusumāyudhaḥ pravṛttaḥ śithilīkartum mekhalāḥ
surayoṣitām nitambe vīrāliṅganalolānām
7. The god of love (kusumāyudha) has set out to loosen the waistbands on the hips of celestial women, who are yearning for the embrace of heroes.
लसद्भुजलतालोला रक्तपल्लवपाणयः ।
मञ्जरीमत्तनयना मध्वामोदसुगन्धयः ॥ ८ ॥
lasadbhujalatālolā raktapallavapāṇayaḥ ,
mañjarīmattanayanā madhvāmodasugandhayaḥ 8
8. lasadbhuja-latā-lolāḥ rakta-pallava-pāṇayaḥ
mañjarī-matta-nayanāḥ madhu-āmoda-sugandhayaḥ
8. lasadbhuja-latā-lolāḥ rakta-pallava-pāṇayaḥ
mañjarī-matta-nayanāḥ madhu-āmoda-sugandhayaḥ
8. Swaying with their gleaming, creeper-like arms, possessing hands like red, tender shoots, their eyes intoxicated by the blossoming clusters, and exuding fragrance with the scent of honey.
गायन्त्यो मधुरालापैर्नन्दनोद्यानदेवताः ।
तवागमनमाशङ्क्य प्रवृत्ताः परिनर्तितुम् ॥ ९ ॥
gāyantyo madhurālāpairnandanodyānadevatāḥ ,
tavāgamanamāśaṅkya pravṛttāḥ parinartitum 9
9. gāyantyaḥ madhurālāpaiḥ nandanodyāna-devatāḥ
tava-āgamanam āśaṅkya pravṛttāḥ parinartitum
9. nandanodyāna-devatāḥ gāyantyaḥ madhurālāpaiḥ
tava-āgamanam āśaṅkya pravṛttāḥ parinartitum
9. The goddesses of the Nandana garden, singing with sweet melodies, have started to dance, anticipating your arrival.
प्रत्यनीकं भिनत्त्यन्तः कुठारैः कठिनैरियम् ।
सेना ग्राम्येव वनिता दयितं दृष्टिचेष्टितैः ॥ १० ॥
pratyanīkaṃ bhinattyantaḥ kuṭhāraiḥ kaṭhinairiyam ,
senā grāmyeva vanitā dayitaṃ dṛṣṭiceṣṭitaiḥ 10
10. pratyanīkam bhinatti antaḥ kuṭhāraiḥ kaṭhinaiḥ iyam
senā grāmyā iva vanitā dayitam dṛṣṭi-ceṣṭitaiḥ
10. iyam senā bhinatti pratyanīkam antaḥ kaṭhinaiḥ
kuṭhāraiḥ grāmyā iva vanitā dayitam dṛṣṭi-ceṣṭitaiḥ
10. This army penetrates the enemy force within, using hard axes, just as a village woman pierces her beloved with her glances and gestures.
हा पितुर्मम भल्लेन शिरो ज्वलितकुण्डलम् ।
सूर्यस्य निकटं नीतं कालेनेवाष्टमो ग्रहः ॥ ११ ॥
hā piturmama bhallena śiro jvalitakuṇḍalam ,
sūryasya nikaṭaṃ nītaṃ kālenevāṣṭamo grahaḥ 11
11. hā pituḥ mama bhallena śiraḥ jvalitakuṇḍalam
sūryasya nikaṭam nītam kālena iva aṣṭamaḥ grahaḥ
11. hā mama pituḥ jvalitakuṇḍalam śiraḥ bhallena sūryasya nikaṭam nītam,
kālena aṣṭamaḥ grahaḥ iva
11. Alas, by an arrow, my father's head, adorned with shining earrings, was carried close to the sun, just as an eighth planet might be brought near by the relentless passage of time.
आपादशृङ्खलाप्रोतभ्रमत्स्थूलोपलद्वयम् ।
भ्रामयंश्चित्रदण्डाख्यं चक्रमूर्ध्वभुजो जवात् ॥ १२ ॥
āpādaśṛṅkhalāprotabhramatsthūlopaladvayam ,
bhrāmayaṃścitradaṇḍākhyaṃ cakramūrdhvabhujo javāt 12
12. āpādaśṛṅkhalāprotabhramatsthūlopaladvayam
bhrāmayan citradaṇḍākhyam cakram ūrdhvabhujaḥ javāt
12. ūrdhvabhujaḥ javāt āpādaśṛṅkhalāprotabhramatsthūlopaladvayam
citradaṇḍākhyam cakram bhrāmayan
12. With an upraised arm, he swiftly whirled the discus, known as Citradaṇḍa, which was equipped with a pair of massive stones, strung on chains reaching down to its base, and constantly revolving.
योधो यम इवाभाति याम्यादायाति दिक्तटात् ।
सर्वतः संहरन्सेनामेहि यामो यथागतम् ॥ १३ ॥
yodho yama ivābhāti yāmyādāyāti diktaṭāt ,
sarvataḥ saṃharansenāmehi yāmo yathāgatam 13
13. yodhaḥ yamaḥ iva ābhāti yāmyāt āyāti diktaṭāt
sarvataḥ saṃharan senām ehi yāmaḥ yathāgatam
13. yāmyāt diktaṭāt āyāti yodhaḥ yamaḥ iva ābhāti.
sarvataḥ senām saṃharan,
(saḥ vadati) "ehi,
yathāgatam yāmaḥ"
13. The warrior appears like Yama, the god of death, as he comes from the southern direction. Systematically destroying the army from all sides, (he urges,) 'Come, let us proceed as we arrived!'
सद्यश्छिन्नशिरश्वभ्रमज्जत्कङ्ककुलाकुलाः ।
कबन्धाः परिनृत्यन्ति तालोत्ताला रणाङ्गणे ॥ १४ ॥
sadyaśchinnaśiraśvabhramajjatkaṅkakulākulāḥ ,
kabandhāḥ parinṛtyanti tālottālā raṇāṅgaṇe 14
14. sadyaḥ chinna śiraḥ ca bhramajjatkaṅkakulākulāḥ
kabandhāḥ parinṛtyanti tālottālāḥ raṇāṅgaṇe
14. raṇāṅgaṇe sadyaḥ chinna śiraḥ ca bhramajjatkaṅkakulākulāḥ
tālottālāḥ kabandhāḥ parinṛtyanti
14. In the battlefield, headless bodies, whose heads have just been severed and which are greatly agitated by flocks of circling vultures, are dancing wildly with thunderous, rhythmic movements.
गीर्वाणगणगोष्ठीषु प्रवृत्ताः संकथा मिथः ।
कदा लोकान्तरं धीराः कथं यास्यन्ति के कुतः ॥ १५ ॥
gīrvāṇagaṇagoṣṭhīṣu pravṛttāḥ saṃkathā mithaḥ ,
kadā lokāntaraṃ dhīrāḥ kathaṃ yāsyanti ke kutaḥ 15
15. gīrvāṇagaṇagoṣṭhīṣu pravṛttāḥ saṃkathāḥ mithaḥ
kadā lokāntaram dhīrāḥ katham yāsyanti ke kutaḥ
15. gīrvāṇagaṇagoṣṭhīṣu mithaḥ saṃkathāḥ pravṛttāḥ
dhīrāḥ ke kadā katham kutaḥ lokāntaram yāsyanti
15. Conversations have begun mutually among the assemblies of the hosts of gods. When will these resolute ones depart to another world, how, who, and from where?
निगिरत्यागताः सेनाः स्रवन्तीरिव सागरः ।
समत्स्यमकरव्यूहा अहो नु विषमो भटः ॥ १६ ॥
nigiratyāgatāḥ senāḥ sravantīriva sāgaraḥ ,
samatsyamakaravyūhā aho nu viṣamo bhaṭaḥ 16
16. nigirati āgatāḥ senāḥ sravantīḥ iva sāgaraḥ
samatsyamakaravyūhāḥ aho nu viṣamaḥ bhaṭaḥ
16. sāgaraḥ sravantīḥ iva,
(saḥ bhaṭaḥ) samatsyamakaravyūhāḥ āgatāḥ senāḥ nigirati aho nu bhaṭaḥ viṣamaḥ
16. Just as the ocean swallows arriving rivers, so too does he devour the incoming armies, which possess formations like those of fish and crocodiles. Oh, what a formidable warrior (bhaṭa)!
कटेषु करिणां कीर्णा धारानाराचराजयः ।
पतिता इव संपूर्णाः शृङ्गसंघेषु वृष्टयः ॥ १७ ॥
kaṭeṣu kariṇāṃ kīrṇā dhārānārācarājayaḥ ,
patitā iva saṃpūrṇāḥ śṛṅgasaṃgheṣu vṛṣṭayaḥ 17
17. kaṭeṣu kariṇām kīrṇāḥ dhārānārācarājayaḥ
patitāḥ iva saṃpūrṇāḥ śṛṅgasaṃgheṣu vṛṣṭayaḥ
17. kariṇām kaṭeṣu dhārānārācarājayaḥ kīrṇāḥ (āsan),
saṃpūrṇāḥ vṛṣṭayaḥ śṛṅgasaṃgheṣu patitāḥ iva
17. Lines of streaming arrows were scattered upon the temples of the elephants, just like abundant showers of rain falling upon mountain peaks.
हा कुन्तेन शिरो नीतं ममेत्येव विवक्षतः ।
शिरसाऽजीवमित्येवं खे खगेनेव वाशितम् ॥ १८ ॥
hā kuntena śiro nītaṃ mametyeva vivakṣataḥ ,
śirasā'jīvamityevaṃ khe khageneva vāśitam 18
18. hā kuntena śiraḥ nītam mama iti eva vivakṣataḥ
śirasā ajīvam iti eva khe khagena iva vāśitam
18. (kaścid) "hā kuntena mama śiraḥ nītam!" iti eva vivakṣataḥ (sataḥ api),
"śirasā ajīvam!" iti eva khe khagena iva vāśitam
18. 'Alas, my head has been taken by the spear (kunta)!' - just as one desired to exclaim this, so too, 'I survived by my head!' - thus it was cried out in the sky, as if by a bird.
यन्त्रपाषाणवर्षेण यैषास्मान्परिषिञ्चति ।
सेनानुशृङ्खलाजालवलना क्रियतां बलात् ॥ १९ ॥
yantrapāṣāṇavarṣeṇa yaiṣāsmānpariṣiñcati ,
senānuśṛṅkhalājālavalanā kriyatāṃ balāt 19
19. yantrapāṣāṇavarṣeṇa yā eṣā asmān pariṣiñcati
senānuśṛṅkhalājālavalanā kriyatām balāt
19. yā eṣā asmān yantrapāṣāṇavarṣeṇa pariṣiñcati,
(tasyāḥ) senānuśṛṅkhalājālavalanā balāt kriyatām
19. As this [enemy] showers us with a hail of stones from war machines, let the entanglement of their army in chains and nets be accomplished by force.
वलीपलितनिर्मुक्तं पूर्वभार्याप्सराः सती ।
अङ्गीकरोति भर्तारं परिज्ञाय रणे हतम् ॥ २० ॥
valīpalitanirmuktaṃ pūrvabhāryāpsarāḥ satī ,
aṅgīkaroti bhartāraṃ parijñāya raṇe hatam 20
20. valīpalitanirmuktam pūrvabhāryāpsarāḥ satī
aṅgīkaroti bhartāram parijñāya raṇe hatam
20. pūrvabhāryā apsarāḥ satī raṇe hatam
valīpalitanirmuktam bhartāram parijñāya aṅgīkaroti
20. Having recognized her husband, slain in battle, [now] freed from wrinkles and gray hair, the former wife, a virtuous Apsara, accepts him.
आदिवं रचिताकाराः कुन्तकाननकान्तयः ।
वीराणां स्वर्गमारोढुमिव सोपानपङ्क्तयः ॥ २१ ॥
ādivaṃ racitākārāḥ kuntakānanakāntayaḥ ,
vīrāṇāṃ svargamāroḍhumiva sopānapaṅktayaḥ 21
21. ādivam racitākārāḥ kuntakānanakāntayaḥ
vīrāṇām svargam āroḍhum iva sopānapaṅktayaḥ
21. ādivam racitākārāḥ kuntakānanakāntayaḥ
sopānapaṅktayaḥ iva vīrāṇām svargam āroḍhum (santi)
21. Like rows of stairs for heroes to ascend to heaven, these [spears] have forms stretching up to heaven, with the radiant beauty of a forest of spears.
कान्तकाञ्चनकान्ताङ्गे भटस्योरसि कामिनी ।
दृष्टा देवपुरन्ध्रीयं भर्तुरन्वेषणान्विता ॥ २२ ॥
kāntakāñcanakāntāṅge bhaṭasyorasi kāminī ,
dṛṣṭā devapurandhrīyaṃ bharturanveṣaṇānvitā 22
22. kāntakāñcanakāntāṅge bhaṭasya urasi kāminī
dṛṣṭā devapurandhrī iyam bhartuḥ anveṣaṇānvitā
22. iyam kāminī devapurandhrī bhartuḥ anveṣaṇānvitā,
kāntakāñcanakāntāṅge bhaṭasya urasi dṛṣṭā
22. This beloved heavenly nymph (devapurandhrī), engaged in the search for her husband, was seen upon the warrior's chest, which was radiant and beautiful like shining gold.
हा हतं सैन्यमस्माकं भटैऽरुद्धतमुष्टिभिः ।
महाप्रलयकल्लोलैः सुरशैलस्थलं यथा ॥ २३ ॥
hā hataṃ sainyamasmākaṃ bhaṭai'ruddhatamuṣṭibhiḥ ,
mahāpralayakallolaiḥ suraśailasthalaṃ yathā 23
23. hā hatam sainyam asmākam bhaṭaiḥ aruddhatamuṣṭibhiḥ
mahāpralayakallolaiḥ suraśailasthalam yathā
23. hā asmākam sainyam aruddhatamuṣṭibhiḥ bhaṭaiḥ hatam,
mahāpralayakallolaiḥ suraśailasthalam yathā
23. Alas, our army has been destroyed by warriors with relentless fists, just as the plateau of the divine mountain (Meru) is overwhelmed by the colossal waves of the great cosmic dissolution (mahāpralaya).
युध्यध्वमग्रतो मूढा नयतार्धमृतान्नरान् ।
निजान्पादप्रहारेण मैतान्दारयताधमाः ॥ २४ ॥
yudhyadhvamagrato mūḍhā nayatārdhamṛtānnarān ,
nijānpādaprahāreṇa maitāndārayatādhamāḥ 24
24. yudhyadhvam agrataḥ mūḍhāḥ nayata ardhamṛtān
narān nijān pādaprahāreṇa mā etān dārayata adhamāḥ
24. mūḍhāḥ agrataḥ yudhyadhvam,
ardhamṛtān nijān narān nayata; adhamāḥ etān pādaprahāreṇa mā dārayata
24. O fools, fight on, advance! Lead your own half-dead men. O wretched ones, do not tear them apart with your kicks!
धम्मिल्लवलनाव्यग्रे घनोत्कण्ठेऽप्सरोगणे ।
भटो दिव्यशरीरेण पार्श्वप्राप्तो निरीक्ष्यताम् ॥ २५ ॥
dhammillavalanāvyagre ghanotkaṇṭhe'psarogaṇe ,
bhaṭo divyaśarīreṇa pārśvaprāpto nirīkṣyatām 25
25. dhammillavalanāvyagre ghanotkaṇṭhe apsarogaṇe
bhaṭaḥ divyaśarīreṇa pārśvaprāptaḥ nirīkṣyatām
25. dhammillavalanāvyagre ghanotkaṇṭhe apsarogaṇe,
divyaśarīreṇa pārśvaprāptaḥ bhaṭaḥ nirīkṣyatām
25. Let the warrior, now possessing a divine body and having arrived near them, be observed by the intensely eager host of Apsaras, who are absorbed in arranging their braided hair.
फुल्लहेमारविन्दासु च्छायाशीतजलानिलैः ।
स्वर्गनद्यास्तटीष्वेनं दूरायातं विनोदय ॥ २६ ॥
phullahemāravindāsu cchāyāśītajalānilaiḥ ,
svarganadyāstaṭīṣvenaṃ dūrāyātaṃ vinodaya 26
26. phullahemāravindāsu cchāyāśītajalānilaiḥ
svarganadyāḥ taṭīṣu enam dūrāyātam vinodaya
26. svarganadyāḥ phullahemāravindāsu cchāyāśītajalānilaiḥ taṭīṣu,
dūrāyātam enam vinodaya
26. On the banks of the celestial river (Ganga), blooming with golden lotuses and cooled by shade, water, and breezes, entertain this one who has arrived from afar!
विविधायुधसंघट्टखण्डितोग्रास्थिकोटयः ।
खे कवन्त्यः कणत्कारैः प्रसृतास्तारका इव ॥ २७ ॥
vividhāyudhasaṃghaṭṭakhaṇḍitogrāsthikoṭayaḥ ,
khe kavantyaḥ kaṇatkāraiḥ prasṛtāstārakā iva 27
27. vividhāyudhasaṅghaṭṭakhaṇḍitogrāsthikoṭayaḥ
khe kavantyaḥ kaṇatkāraiḥ prasṛtāḥ tārakāḥ iva
27. vividhāyudhasaṅghaṭṭakhaṇḍitogrāsthikoṭayaḥ
kavantyaḥ kaṇatkāraiḥ khe prasṛtāḥ tārakāḥ iva
27. The severed heads (kavantyaḥ), whose vast number of fierce bones were shattered by the clash of various weapons, flew in the sky, making 'kaṇat' sounds, like scattered stars.
व्योम्नि जीवनदीवाहे वहत्सायकवारिणि ।
चक्रावर्तिनि गच्छन्ति गिरयोऽप्यणुपङ्कताम् ॥ २८ ॥
vyomni jīvanadīvāhe vahatsāyakavāriṇi ,
cakrāvartini gacchanti girayo'pyaṇupaṅkatām 28
28. vyomni jīvanadīvāhe vahat-sāyakavāriṇi
cakrāvartini gacchanti girayaḥ api aṇupaṅkatām
28. vyomni jīvanadīvāhe vahat-sāyakavāriṇi cakrāvartini,
girayaḥ api aṇupaṅkatām gacchanti
28. In the sky (vyoman), which has become a river of life-streams, with the flowing arrows as its water, and whirling with chakra-like formations, even mountains become reduced to a state of minute dust.
भ्रमद्भिर्ग्रहमार्गेषु शिरोभिर्वीरभूभृताम् ।
आयुधांशुलतानाललग्नासिदलकण्टकैः ॥ २९ ॥
bhramadbhirgrahamārgeṣu śirobhirvīrabhūbhṛtām ,
āyudhāṃśulatānālalagnāsidalakaṇṭakaiḥ 29
29. bhramadbhiḥ grahamārgeṣu śirobhiḥ vīrabhūbhṛtām

29. grahamārgeṣu bhramadbhiḥ,
āyudhāṃśulatānālalagnāsidalakaṇṭakaiḥ vīrabhūbhṛtām śirobhiḥ
29. By the heads (śiras) of brave kings (vīrabhūbhṛtām) that wandered in the planetary paths, entwined with lotus stems of weapon-rays, and with the thorns of sword-petals stuck to them.
केतुपट्टंमृणालाङ्गदलैर्लब्धशिलीमुखैः ।
वहद्वातचलत्पद्मं नभः पद्मसरः कृतम् ॥ ३० ॥

30. The sky (nabhas) was made into a lotus pond (padmasaras) by the petal-like parts (dala) that were like lotus-stalks (mṛṇālāṅga) made of banner-cloth (ketupaṭṭa), which had acquired bees (śilīmukha), and by the lotuses (padma) that moved due to the blowing wind.
मृतमातङ्गसंघाते गिराविव पिपीलिकाः ।
भीरवः परिलीयन्ते स्त्रियः पुंवक्षसीव च ॥ ३१ ॥

31. Just as timid ants gather on a heap of dead elephants (or as if on a mountain), so too do women cling to a man's chest.
अपूर्वोत्तमसौन्दर्यकान्तसंगमशंसिनः ।
वान्ति विद्याधरस्त्रीणामलकोल्लासिनोऽनिलाः ॥ ३२ ॥

32. Winds blow, agitating the curls of Vidyādhara women and announcing the union of unparalleled, supreme beauty and a lover.
छत्रेषूड्डीयमानेषु स्थितेषु व्योम्नि चन्द्रता ।
इन्दुनेव यशोमूर्त्या कृता शुभ्रातपत्रता ॥ ३३ ॥
chatreṣūḍḍīyamāneṣu sthiteṣu vyomni candratā ,

33. When the parasols rise and remain suspended in the sky, the embodiment of glory (yaśomūrti) creates for them a moon-like radiance (candratā), as if from the moon itself, along with the status of a pure white umbrella.
भटो मरणमूर्च्छान्ते निमेषेणामरं वपुः ।
स्वकर्मशिल्पिरचितं प्राप्तः स्वप्नपुरं यथा ॥ ३४ ॥
bhaṭo maraṇamūrcchānte nimeṣeṇāmaraṃ vapuḥ ,
svakarmaśilpiracitaṃ prāptaḥ svapnapuraṃ yathā 34

34. A warrior, at the conclusion of a death-faint, instantly obtained an immortal body, which was skillfully crafted by the architect of his own actions (karma), just as one might suddenly enter a dream city.
शूलशक्त्यृष्टिचक्राणां वृष्टयो मुक्ततुष्टयः ।
व्योमाब्धौ मत्स्यमकरसंकुलावयवाः स्थिताः ॥ ३५ ॥

35. Showers of spears, lances, javelins, and discus, discharged with satisfaction, remained in the sky-ocean, their components crowded with (resembling) fish and crocodiles.
शरोत्कृत्तसितच्छत्रकलहंसैर्नभःस्थलम् ।
भाति संचितपूर्णेन्दुबिम्बलक्षैरिवावृतम् ॥ ३६ ॥

36. The sky, [filled] with white umbrella-swans cut down by arrows, appears as if covered by thousands of accumulated full moon discs.
क्रियते गगनोड्डीनैश्चामरैश्चारुघर्घरैः ।
वातावधूतसंरोधतरङ्गनिकरद्युतिः ॥ ३७ ॥
kriyate gaganoḍḍīnaiścāmaraiścārughargharaiḥ ,
vātāvadhūtasaṃrodhataraṅganikaradyutiḥ 37

37. By charmingly jingling fly-whisks, flying up in the sky, the luster of a multitude of waves - agitated by the wind and forming a dense mass - is created.
दृश्यन्ते हेतिदलिताश्छत्रचामरकेतवः ।
आकाशक्षेत्रविक्षिप्ता यशःशालिलता इव ॥ ३८ ॥
dṛśyante hetidalitāśchatracāmaraketavaḥ ,
ākāśakṣetravikṣiptā yaśaḥśālilatā iva 38

ākāśa-kṣetra-vikṣiptā yaśas-śālinī-latā iva

38. Umbrellas, fly-whisks, and banners, shattered by weapons, are seen as if they were a fame-bearing creeper scattered throughout the field of the sky.
वहद्भिर्व्योम्नि सक्षेम पश्य नीता क्षयं शरै ।
शक्तिवृष्टिरुपायान्ती सस्यश्रीः शलभैरिव ॥ ३९ ॥
vahadbhirvyomni sakṣema paśya nītā kṣayaṃ śarai ,
śaktivṛṣṭirupāyāntī sasyaśrīḥ śalabhairiva 39
39. vahadbhiḥ vyomni sakṣema paśya nītā kṣayam śaraiḥ
śaktivṛṣṭiḥ upāyāntī sasyaśrīḥ śalabhaiḥ iva

39. Behold, the approaching rain of powerful weapons (śakti), flying in the sky, is surely brought to destruction by arrows, just as the bounty of crops is by locusts.
एषा प्रसृतदोर्दण्डभटखड्गच्छटात्कृतिः ।
कठिनात्कंकटाज्जाता मृत्योरेवोग्रहुंकृतिः ॥ ४० ॥
eṣā prasṛtadordaṇḍabhaṭakhaḍgacchaṭātkṛtiḥ ,
kaṭhinātkaṃkaṭājjātā mṛtyorevograhuṃkṛtiḥ 40
40. eṣā prasṛtadoradaṇḍabhaṭakhaḍgacchaṭā ākṛtiḥ
kaṭhināt kaṅkaṭāt jātā mṛtyoḥ eva ugra huṅkṛtiḥ

40. This sight, the flashing multitude of swords of warriors with extended mighty arms, arising from hard armor, is indeed the fierce roar of death (mṛtyu).
हेतिकल्पानिलक्षुण्णा दन्तनिर्झरवारयः ।
जनताक्षयकालेऽस्मिन्भग्ना नागा नगा इव ॥ ४१ ॥
hetikalpānilakṣuṇṇā dantanirjharavārayaḥ ,
janatākṣayakāle'sminbhagnā nāgā nagā iva 41

41. During this period of widespread destruction, elephants, whose fluid secretions (musth) resembled waterfalls from their tusks, were shattered like mountains (naga) by winds as fierce as weapons.
सचक्रनाथसूताश्वं व्यूढं रक्तमहाहृदे ।
हाहाभिभूतगतिकं चेष्टते रथपत्त्नम् ॥ ४२ ॥
sacakranāthasūtāśvaṃ vyūḍhaṃ raktamahāhṛde ,
hāhābhibhūtagatikaṃ ceṣṭate rathapattnam 42

42. The chariot, complete with its warrior, charioteer, and horses, plunged into the great lake of blood, struggles to move, its motion impeded by cries of distress.
करकंकटकुट्यङ्कखड्गसंघट्टटांकृतैः ।
कालरात्र्या प्रनृत्यन्त्या रणवीणेव वाद्यते ॥ ४३ ॥
karakaṃkaṭakuṭyaṅkakhaḍgasaṃghaṭṭaṭāṃkṛtaiḥ ,

43. With the clanging sounds of swords striking against the armor and armlets on the forearms, it seems as if a war-lute is being played by Kālarātrī, who is dancing vigorously.
नरेभखरवाजिभ्यो ये च्युता रक्तनिर्झराः ।
पश्य तद्बिन्दुसिक्तेन वायुनारुणिता दिशः ॥ ४४ ॥

paśya tadbindusiktena vāyunāruṇitā diśaḥ 44

44. Behold, the directions are reddened by the wind, which is sprinkled with drops from the streams of blood that have fallen from men, elephants, donkeys, and horses.
शस्त्रांशुजलदे व्योम्नि कालीचिकुरमेचके ।
शरकोरकभारस्रङ्मेघे विद्युदिवोदिता ॥ ४५ ॥

45. In the sky, resembling a cloud formed by the rays of weapons, dark like the mass of Kāli's hair, and a cloud laden with garlands of arrow-buds, lightning (vidyut) has arisen, as if manifested.
अनन्तरक्तसंसक्तसन्नावनितलायुधैः ।
भुवनं भात्यभिज्वालमग्निलोक इवाकुलम् ॥ ४६ ॥
anantaraktasaṃsaktasannāvanitalāyudhaiḥ ,
bhuvanaṃ bhātyabhijvālamagniloka ivākulam 46
46. anantarakta saṃsakta sannāvanitalāyudhaiḥ
bhuvanam bhāti abhijvālam agnilokaḥ iva ākulam

46. With weapons fallen onto the ground and clinging to endless blood, the world appears ablaze and agitated, as if it were a disordered world of fire (agniloka).
भुशुण्डीशक्तिशूलासिमुसलप्रासवृष्टयः ।
अन्योन्यच्छेदभेदाभ्यां करप्रकरतोऽपतन् ॥ ४७ ॥

47. Showers of various weapons like bhushundis, spears (śakti), pikes (śūla), swords, clubs, and javelins rained down from a multitude of hands, resulting in mutual cutting and piercing.
अक्षोभैकप्रहरणाद्यातुधान्योऽन्यचेष्टितम् ।
संरम्भावेक्षणप्रज्ञं रणं स्वप्नमिव स्थितम् ॥ ४८ ॥

saṃrambhāvekṣaṇaprajñaṃ raṇaṃ svapnamiva sthitam 48

48. The female demons (yātudhānya), empowered by their unshakeable principal weapon, perceived the battle - with its actions of others and its discernment of furious glances - as if it were a dream.
अनन्यशब्दाविरतहताहतिरणज्झणैः ।
गायतीव क्षतक्षोभमुदितो रणभैरवः ॥ ४९ ॥

49. The terrifying aspect of battle (raṇabhairava), which arose from the commotion of wounds, seemed to be singing with the incomparable, incessant clanging and jingling sounds of repeated strikes.
अन्योन्यरणहेत्युग्रचूर्णपूर्णो रणार्णवः ।
वालुकामय एवाभूच्छिन्नच्छत्रतरङ्गकः ॥ ५० ॥
anyonyaraṇahetyugracūrṇapūrṇo raṇārṇavaḥ ,
vālukāmaya evābhūcchinnacchatrataraṅgakaḥ 50

50. The ocean of battle (raṇārṇava) became filled with the terrible dust churned up by the mutually wielded weapons. It was as if made of sand, with broken parasols serving as its waves.
सरभसरसवद्विसारितूर्यप्रतिरवपूरितलोकपाललोकः ।
रणगिरिरयमुग्रपक्षदक्षप्रतिसृतिवृत्त इवाम्बरे युगान्ते ॥ ५१ ॥

51. This battle-mountain, which filled the realms of the world-guardians (lokapālas) with the eager and resonant echoes of its widely blaring trumpets, moved in the sky like a creature skilled in powerful wings making a hostile maneuver at the end of an eon (yuga).
हा हा धिक्प्रविकटकङ्कटाननोद्यत्प्रोड्डीनप्रकटतडिच्छटाप्रतप्ताः ।
क्रेङ्कारस्फुरितगुणेरिता रणन्तो नाराचाः शिखरिशिलागणं वहन्ति ॥ ५२ ॥

52. Alas, alas, shame! The iron arrows (nārācas), appearing scorched like manifest lightning flashes soaring and rising from terrible, wide, armor-like mouths, and propelled by bowstrings vibrating with a 'kreṅkāra' sound, roar as they carry away masses of mountain rocks.
छिन्नेच्छाच्छमिति न यावदङ्गभङ्गं कुर्वन्तो ज्वलदनलोज्ज्वलाः पृषत्काः ।
तावद्द्राग्द्रुतमित एहि मित्र यामो यामोऽयं प्रवहति वासरश्चतुर्थः ॥ ५३ ॥
chinnecchācchamiti na yāvadaṅgabhaṅgaṃ kurvanto jvaladanalojjvalāḥ pṛṣatkāḥ ,
tāvaddrāgdrutamita ehi mitra yāmo yāmo'yaṃ pravahati vāsaraścaturthaḥ 53
53. chinnaicchāaccham iti na yāvat aṅgabhaṅgam
kurvantaḥ jvalat anala ujjvalāḥ pṛṣatkāḥ
tāvat drāk drutam itaḥ ehi mitra yāmaḥ
yāmaḥ ayam pravahati vāsaraḥ ca caturthaḥ
53. mitra,
drāk drutam itaḥ ehi! na yāvat pṛṣatkāḥ jvalat anala ujjvalāḥ chinnaicchāaccham aṅgabhaṅgam kurvantaḥ tāvat (ehi).

53. Before the arrows (pṛṣatkas), which blazed like burning fire and were destroying bodies and utterly crushing desires, could fully accomplish their task, (the call went out): 'Friend, come quickly from here, let us depart! This watch (yāma) is upon us, and the fourth day is passing.'
