युगक्षोभेषु घोरेषु वाक्यासु विषमासु च ।
सुस्थिरः कल्पवृक्षोऽयं न कदाचन कम्पते ॥ १ ॥

1. Bhushunda said: "Even in the dreadful commotions of the ages and in adverse situations, this wish-fulfilling tree (kalpavṛkṣa) remains firmly stable; it never trembles."
अगम्योऽयं समग्राणां लोकान्तरविहारिणाम् ।
भूतानां तेन तिष्ठाम इह साधो सुखेन वै ॥ २ ॥
agamyo'yaṃ samagrāṇāṃ lokāntaravihāriṇām ,
bhūtānāṃ tena tiṣṭhāma iha sādho sukhena vai 2
2. agamyaḥ ayam samagrāṇām lokāntaravihāriṇām
bhūtānām tena tiṣṭhāma iha sādho sukhena vai
2. sādho! ayam samagrāṇām lokāntaravihāriṇām bhūtānām agamyaḥ.
tena vai iha sukhena tiṣṭhāma.
2. O good one! This (tree) is inaccessible to all beings who wander through other worlds. Therefore, we indeed remain here happily.
हिरण्याक्षो धरापीठं द्वीपसप्तकवेष्टितम् ।
यदा जहार तरसा नाकम्पत तदा तरुः ॥ ३ ॥
hiraṇyākṣo dharāpīṭhaṃ dvīpasaptakaveṣṭitam ,
yadā jahāra tarasā nākampata tadā taruḥ 3
3. hiraṇyākṣaḥ dharāpīṭham dvīpasaptakaveṣṭitam
yadā jahāra tarasā na akampata tadā taruḥ
3. yadā hiraṇyākṣaḥ dvīpasaptakaveṣṭitam dharāpīṭham tarasā jahāra,
tadā taruḥ na akampata.
3. When Hiraṇyākṣa forcefully seized the earth's surface, which is surrounded by the seven continents, even then the tree did not tremble.
यदा लोलायितवपुर्बभूवामरपर्वतः ।
सर्वतो दत्तसाम्याद्रिस्तदा नाकम्पत द्रुमः ॥ ४ ॥
yadā lolāyitavapurbabhūvāmaraparvataḥ ,
sarvato dattasāmyādristadā nākampata drumaḥ 4
4. yadā lolāyitavapuḥ babhūva amaraparvataḥ
sarvataḥ dattasāmyādriḥ tadā na akampata drumaḥ
4. yadā lolāyitavapuḥ sarvataḥ dattasāmyādriḥ amaraparvataḥ babhūva,
tadā drumaḥ na akampata.
4. When the immortal mountain (Meru), with its body swaying, was given equilibrium on all sides (during the cosmic churning), even then the tree did not tremble.
भुजावष्टम्भविनमन्मेरुर्नारायणो यदा ।
मन्दरं प्रोद्दधाराद्रिं तदा नाकम्पत द्रुमः ॥ ५ ॥
bhujāvaṣṭambhavinamanmerurnārāyaṇo yadā ,
mandaraṃ proddadhārādriṃ tadā nākampata drumaḥ 5
5. bhujāvaṣṭambhavinamanmeruḥ nārāyaṇaḥ yadā mandaram
proddadhāra adrim tadā na akampata drumaḥ
5. yadā bhujāvaṣṭambhavinamanmeruḥ nārāyaṇaḥ mandaram
adrim proddadhāra tadā drumaḥ na akampata
5. When Nārāyaṇa, causing Mount Meru to bow down by the support of his arms, lifted Mount Mandara, even then the tree did not tremble.
यदा सुरासुरक्षोभपतच्चन्द्रार्कमण्डलम् ।
आसीज्जगदतिक्षुब्धं तदा नाकम्पत द्रुमः ॥ ६ ॥
yadā surāsurakṣobhapataccandrārkamaṇḍalam ,
āsījjagadatikṣubdhaṃ tadā nākampata drumaḥ 6
6. yadā surāsurakṣobhapataccandrārkamaṇḍalam āsīt
jagat atikṣubdham tadā na akampata drumaḥ
6. yadā surāsurakṣobhapataccandrārkamaṇḍalam
jagat atikṣubdham āsīt tadā drumaḥ na akampata
6. When the spheres of the moon and sun were falling due to the churning agitation by gods and demons, and the entire world was greatly disturbed, even then the tree did not tremble.
उन्मूलिताद्रीन्द्रशिला यदोत्पातानिला ववुः ।
आधूतमेरुतरवस्तदा नाकम्पत द्रुमः ॥ ७ ॥
unmūlitādrīndraśilā yadotpātānilā vavuḥ ,
ādhūtamerutaravastadā nākampata drumaḥ 7
7. yadā utpātānilāḥ vavuḥ unmūlitādrīndraśilāḥ
ādhūtamerutaravaḥ tadā na akampata drumaḥ
7. yadā utpātānilāḥ unmūlitādrīndraśilāḥ
ādhūtamerutaravaḥ vavuḥ tadā drumaḥ na akampata
7. When catastrophic winds blew, uprooting the rocks of mighty mountains and shaking the trees of Mount Meru, even then the tree did not tremble.
यदा क्षीरोदलोलाद्रिकन्दरानिलकम्पिताः ।
कल्पाभ्रपङ्क्तयश्चेरुस्तदा नाकम्पत द्रुमः ॥ ८ ॥
yadā kṣīrodalolādrikandarānilakampitāḥ ,
kalpābhrapaṅktayaścerustadā nākampata drumaḥ 8
8. yadā kṣīrodalolādrikandarānilakampitāḥ
kalpābhrapaṅktayaḥ ceruḥ tadā na akampata drumaḥ
8. yadā kṣīrodalolādrikandarānilakampitāḥ
kalpābhrapaṅktayaḥ ceruḥ tadā drumaḥ na akampata
8. When rows of cosmic clouds, shaken by the winds from the caves of the trembling mountains in the ocean of milk, moved about, even then the tree did not tremble.
यदा समन्ततो मेरुः कालनेमिभुजान्तरे ।
किंचिदुन्मूलितोऽतिष्ठत्तदा नाकम्पत द्रुमः ॥ ९ ॥
yadā samantato meruḥ kālanemibhujāntare ,
kiṃcidunmūlito'tiṣṭhattadā nākampata drumaḥ 9
9. yadā samantataḥ meruḥ kālanemibhujāntare kiṃcit
unmūlitaḥ atiṣṭhat tadā na akampata drumaḥ
9. yadā kālanemibhujāntare meruḥ samantataḥ kiṃcit
unmūlitaḥ atiṣṭhat tadā drumaḥ na akampata
9. When Mount Meru stood slightly uprooted within the arms of Kālanemi, even then, this tree did not tremble.
पक्षीशपक्षपवना अमृताक्रान्तिसंगरे ।
यदा ववुः पतत्सिद्धास्तदायं नापतद्द्रुमः ॥ १० ॥
pakṣīśapakṣapavanā amṛtākrāntisaṃgare ,
yadā vavuḥ patatsiddhāstadāyaṃ nāpataddrumaḥ 10
10. pakṣīśapakṣapavanāḥ amṛtākrāntisaṃgare yadā
vavuḥ patatsiddhāḥ tadā ayam na apatat drumaḥ
10. yadā amṛtākrāntisaṃgare pakṣīśapakṣapavanāḥ
patatsiddhāḥ vavuḥ tadā ayam drumaḥ na apatat
10. When the powerful winds from the wings of Garuḍa (pakṣīśa) blew during the battle for the seizure of the ambrosia (amṛta), causing even the Siddhas to fall, even then, this tree did not fall.
यदा शेषाकृतिं रुद्रो नसमाप्तैकचेष्टिताम् ।
ययौ गरुत्मान्ब्रह्माण्डं तदा नाकम्पत द्रुमः ॥ ११ ॥
yadā śeṣākṛtiṃ rudro nasamāptaikaceṣṭitām ,
yayau garutmānbrahmāṇḍaṃ tadā nākampata drumaḥ 11
11. yadā śeṣākṛtim rudraḥ nasamāptaikaceṣṭitām yayau
garutmān brahmāṇḍam tadā na akampata drumaḥ
11. yadā rudraḥ garutmān nasamāptaikaceṣṭitām
śeṣākṛtim brahmāṇḍam yayau tadā drumaḥ na akampata
11. When the winged Rudra, assuming the form of Shesha (śeṣākṛti) - a form whose single endeavor was not yet complete - went to the cosmic egg (brahmāṇḍa), even then, this tree did not tremble.
यदा कल्पानलशिखाः शैलाब्धिसकलोल्बणः ।
शेषः फणाभिस्तत्याज तदा नाकम्पत द्रुमः ॥ १२ ॥
yadā kalpānalaśikhāḥ śailābdhisakalolbaṇaḥ ,
śeṣaḥ phaṇābhistatyāja tadā nākampata drumaḥ 12
12. yadā kalpānalaśikhāḥ śailābdhisakalolbaṇaḥ
śeṣaḥ phaṇābhiḥ tatyāja tadā na akampata drumaḥ
12. yadā śeṣaḥ śailābdhisakalolbaṇaḥ phaṇābhiḥ
kalpānalaśikhāḥ tatyāja tadā drumaḥ na akampata
12. When Shesha (śeṣa), whose fierce nature was capable of entirely engulfing mountains and oceans, emitted the flames of the cosmic dissolution fire (kalpānalaśikhā) from his hoods, even then, this tree did not tremble.
एवंरूपे द्रुमवरे तिष्ठतामापदः कुतः ।
अस्माकं मुनिशार्दूल दौःस्थित्येन किलापदः ॥ १३ ॥
evaṃrūpe drumavare tiṣṭhatāmāpadaḥ kutaḥ ,
asmākaṃ muniśārdūla dauḥsthityena kilāpadaḥ 13
13. evarūpe drumavare tiṣṭhatām āpadaḥ kutaḥ
asmākam muniśārdūla dauḥsthityena kila āpadaḥ
13. muniśārdūla evarūpe drumavare tiṣṭhatām āpadaḥ
kutaḥ asmākam dauḥsthityena kila āpadaḥ
13. How can calamities (āpadaḥ) befall those who reside in such an excellent tree? O tiger among sages, it is indeed due to our own unfortunate situation that calamities (āpadaḥ) befall us.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
कल्पान्तेषु महाबुद्धे वहत्सूत्पातवायुषु ।
प्रपतत्स्विन्दुभार्केषु कथं तिष्ठसि विज्वरः ॥ १४ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
kalpānteṣu mahābuddhe vahatsūtpātavāyuṣu ,
prapatatsvindubhārkeṣu kathaṃ tiṣṭhasi vijvaraḥ 14
14. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca kalpānteṣu mahābudhe vahatsu utpāta
vāyuṣu prapatatsu indubhārkeṣu katham tiṣṭhasi vijvaraḥ
14. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca mahābudhe kalpānteṣu utpāta vāyuṣu
vahatsu indubhārkeṣu prapatatsu katham vijvaraḥ tiṣṭhasi
14. Shri Vasishtha said: O greatly wise one, how do you remain free from agitation (vijvaraḥ) when, at the ends of cosmic cycles (kalpa), destructive winds blow and the moon and suns are falling?
भुशुण्ड उवाच ।
यदा पपात कल्पान्ते व्यवहारो जगत्स्थितौ ।
कृतघ्न इव सन्मित्रं तदा नीडं त्यजाम्यहम् ॥ १५ ॥
bhuśuṇḍa uvāca ,
yadā papāta kalpānte vyavahāro jagatsthitau ,
kṛtaghna iva sanmitraṃ tadā nīḍaṃ tyajāmyaham 15
15. bhuśuṇḍaḥ uvāca yadā papāta kalpānte vyavahāraḥ jagatsthitau
kṛtaghnaḥ iva sanmitram tadā nīḍam tyajāmi aham
15. bhuśuṇḍaḥ uvāca yadā kalpānte jagatsthitau vyavahāraḥ
papāta kṛtaghnaḥ sanmitram iva tadā aham nīḍam tyajāmi
15. Bhushunda said: When, at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa), the activity (vyavahāra) associated with the world's existence ceased - just as an ungrateful person abandons a good friend - then I abandon my nest (nīḍa).
आकाश एव तिष्ठामि विगताखिलकल्पनः ।
स्तब्धप्रकृतिसर्वाङ्गो मनो निर्वासनं यथा ॥ १६ ॥
ākāśa eva tiṣṭhāmi vigatākhilakalpanaḥ ,
stabdhaprakṛtisarvāṅgo mano nirvāsanaṃ yathā 16
16. ākāśe eva tiṣṭhāmi vigatākhilakalpanaḥ
stabdhaprakṛtisarvāṅgaḥ manaḥ nirvāsanām yathā
16. vigatākhilakalpanaḥ stabdhaprakṛtisarvāṅgaḥ
manaḥ nirvāsanām yathā ākāśe eva tiṣṭhāmi
16. I remain in space (ākāśa) itself, with all imaginings vanished, with all my limbs and my intrinsic nature (prakṛti) rendered motionless, just like a mind (manas) devoid of latent impressions (vāsanā).
प्रतपन्ति यदादित्याः शकलीकृतभूधराः ।
वारुणीं धारणां बद्ध्वा तदा तिष्ठामि धीरधीः ॥ १७ ॥
pratapanti yadādityāḥ śakalīkṛtabhūdharāḥ ,
vāruṇīṃ dhāraṇāṃ baddhvā tadā tiṣṭhāmi dhīradhīḥ 17
17. pratapanti yadā ādityāḥ śakalīkṛtabhūdharāḥ
vāruṇīm dhāraṇām baddhvā tadā tiṣṭhāmi dhīradhīḥ
17. yadā ādityāḥ śakalīkṛtabhūdharāḥ pratapanti tadā
vāruṇīm dhāraṇām baddhvā dhīradhīḥ tiṣṭhāmi
17. When the suns scorch intensely, turning mountains into fragments, then I remain with a steadfast mind, having established myself in the aqueous meditation (vāruṇī dhāraṇā).
यदा शकलिताद्रीन्द्रा वान्ति प्रलयवायवः ।
पार्वतीं धारणां बद्ध्वा खे तिष्ठाम्यचलं तदा ॥ १८ ॥
yadā śakalitādrīndrā vānti pralayavāyavaḥ ,
pārvatīṃ dhāraṇāṃ baddhvā khe tiṣṭhāmyacalaṃ tadā 18
18. yadā śakalitādrīndrāḥ vānti pralayavāyavaḥ
pārvatīm dhāraṇām baddhvā khe tiṣṭhāmi acalam tadā
18. yadā pralayavāyavaḥ śakalitādrīndrāḥ vānti tadā
pārvatīm dhāraṇām baddhvā khe acalam tiṣṭhāmi
18. When the winds of cosmic dissolution (pralaya) blow, breaking the great mountains into fragments, then I remain unmoving in space, having established myself in the earthen meditation (pārvatī dhāraṇā).
जगद्गलितमेर्वादि यात्येकार्णवतां यदा ।
वायवीं धारणां बद्ध्वा संप्लवेऽचलधीस्तदा ॥ १९ ॥
jagadgalitamervādi yātyekārṇavatāṃ yadā ,
vāyavīṃ dhāraṇāṃ baddhvā saṃplave'caladhīstadā 19
19. jagat galitameruvādi yāti ekārṇavatām yadā
vāyavīm dhāraṇām baddhvā samplave acaladhīḥ tadā
19. yadā jagat galitameruvādi ekārṇavatām yāti tadā
vāyavīm dhāraṇām baddhvā acaladhīḥ samplave
19. When the world, with Mount Meru and others dissolved, reaches the state of a single universal ocean, then I, with an unwavering intellect, float (samplave), having established myself in the aerial meditation (vāyavī dhāraṇā).
ब्रह्माण्डपारमासाद्य तत्त्वान्ते विमले पदे ।
सुषुप्तावस्थया तावत्तिष्ठाम्यचलरूपया ॥ २० ॥
brahmāṇḍapāramāsādya tattvānte vimale pade ,
suṣuptāvasthayā tāvattiṣṭhāmyacalarūpayā 20
20. brahmāṇḍapāram āsādya tattvānte vimale pade
suṣuptāvasthayā tāvat tiṣṭhāmi acalarūpayā
20. brahmāṇḍapāram āsādya tattvānte vimale pade
tāvat suṣuptāvasthayā acalarūpayā tiṣṭhāmi
20. Having reached the farthest limit of the cosmic egg (brahmāṇḍa), at the pure state (pada) beyond all elements (tattva), I then remain in an unmoving form (acalarūpayā) through the state of deep sleep (suṣuptāvasthā).
यावत्पुनः कमलजः सृष्टिकर्मणि तिष्ठति ।
तत्र प्रविश्य ब्रह्माण्डं तिष्ठामि विहगालये ॥ २१ ॥
yāvatpunaḥ kamalajaḥ sṛṣṭikarmaṇi tiṣṭhati ,
tatra praviśya brahmāṇḍaṃ tiṣṭhāmi vihagālaye 21
21. yāvat punaḥ kamalajaḥ sṛṣṭikarmaṇi tiṣṭhati
tatra praviśya brahmāṇḍam tiṣṭhāmi vihagālaye
21. yāvat kamalajaḥ punaḥ sṛṣṭikarmaṇi tiṣṭhati,
tatra brahmāṇḍam praviśya,
vihagālaye tiṣṭhāmi
21. As long as Brahmā, born from the lotus, remains engaged in the act of creation, I too remain within this universe (brahmāṇḍa), residing in my bird's nest.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
यथा तिष्ठसि पक्षीन्द्र धारणाभिरखण्डितः ।
कल्पान्तेषु तथा कस्मान्नान्ये तिष्ठन्ति योगिनः ॥ २२ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
yathā tiṣṭhasi pakṣīndra dhāraṇābhirakhaṇḍitaḥ ,
kalpānteṣu tathā kasmānnānye tiṣṭhanti yoginaḥ 22
22. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca yathā tiṣṭhasi pakṣīndra dhāraṇābhiḥ
akhaṇḍitaḥ kalpānteṣu tathā kasmāt na anye tiṣṭhanti yoginaḥ
22. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca he pakṣīndra,
yathā tvaṃ dhāraṇābhiḥ akhaṇḍitaḥ tiṣṭhasi,
tathā kalpānteṣu anye yoginaḥ kasmāt na tiṣṭhanti?
22. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: "O king of birds, just as you remain undisturbed through your steadfast concentrations (dhāraṇā), why do other renunciants (yogin) not similarly endure through the end of cosmic cycles (kalpa)?"
भुशुण्ड उवाच ।
ब्रह्मन्नियतिरेषा हि दुर्लङ्घ्या पारमेश्वरी ।
मयेदृशेन वै भाव्यं भाव्यमन्यैस्तु तादृशैः ॥ २३ ॥
bhuśuṇḍa uvāca ,
brahmanniyatireṣā hi durlaṅghyā pārameśvarī ,
mayedṛśena vai bhāvyaṃ bhāvyamanyaistu tādṛśaiḥ 23
23. bhusuṇḍaḥ uvāca brahman niyatiḥ eṣā hi durlaghyā pārameśvarī
mayā īdṛśena vai bhāvyam bhāvyam anyaiḥ tu tādṛśaiḥ
23. bhusuṇḍaḥ uvāca he brahman,
eṣā hi pārameśvarī niyatiḥ durlaṅghyā.
mayā vai īdṛśena bhāvyam; anyaiḥ tu tādṛśaiḥ bhāvyam
23. Bhusuṇḍa said: "O Brahmin (brahman), this destiny (niyati) is indeed insurmountable, for it originates from the Supreme Lord. I am destined to be of this specific nature, while others are destined to be of theirs."
न शक्यते तोलयितुमवश्यं भवितव्यता ।
यद्यथा तत्तथैतद्धि स्वभावस्यैव निश्चयः ॥ २४ ॥
na śakyate tolayitumavaśyaṃ bhavitavyatā ,
yadyathā tattathaitaddhi svabhāvasyaiva niścayaḥ 24
24. na śakyate tolayitum avaśyam bhavitavyatā yat
yathā tat tathā etat hi svabhāvasya eva niścayaḥ
24. na śakyate avaśyam bhavitavyatā tolayitum.
yat yathā tat tathā eva etat hi svabhāvasya niścayaḥ
24. It is impossible to gauge or alter what is inevitably destined (bhavitavyatā). For whatever exists in a particular manner, that very existence is, without doubt, the fixed determination of its intrinsic nature (svabhāva).
मत्संकल्पवशेनैव कल्पे कल्पे पुनः पुनः ।
अस्मिन्नेव गिरेः शृङ्गे तरुरित्थं भवत्ययम् ॥ २५ ॥
matsaṃkalpavaśenaiva kalpe kalpe punaḥ punaḥ ,
asminneva gireḥ śṛṅge taruritthaṃ bhavatyayam 25
25. matsaṅkalpavaśena eva kalpe kalpe punaḥ punaḥ
asmin eva gireḥ śṛṅge taruḥ ittham bhavati ayam
25. matsaṅkalpavaśena eva kalpe kalpe punaḥ punaḥ
asmin eva gireḥ śṛṅge ayam taruḥ ittham bhavati
25. Solely by the power of my resolve, in every cosmic age, repeatedly, this tree thus comes into being on this very peak of the mountain.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
अत्यन्तमोक्षदीर्घायुर्भवान्निर्देशनायकः ।
ज्ञानविज्ञानवान्धीरो योगयोग्यमनोगतिः ॥ २६ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
atyantamokṣadīrghāyurbhavānnirdeśanāyakaḥ ,
jñānavijñānavāndhīro yogayogyamanogatiḥ 26
26. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca atyantamokṣadīrghāyuḥ bhavān
nirdeśanāyakaḥ jñānavijñānavān dhīraḥ yogayogyamanogatiḥ
26. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca bhavān atyantamokṣadīrghāyuḥ
nirdeśanāyakaḥ jñānavijñānavān dhīraḥ yogayogyamanogatiḥ
26. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: You are one with an exceedingly long life due to final liberation (mokṣa), a guide in instruction, possessing knowledge and wisdom, steadfast, and one whose mind's movement is fit for (union with the Divine) (yoga).
दृष्टानेकविधानल्पसर्गसङ्गगमागमः ।
किं किं स्मरसि कल्याण चित्रमस्मिञ्जगत्क्रमे ॥ २७ ॥
dṛṣṭānekavidhānalpasargasaṅgagamāgamaḥ ,
kiṃ kiṃ smarasi kalyāṇa citramasmiñjagatkrame 27
27. dṛṣṭānekavidhānālpasargasaṅgagamāgamaḥ kim
kim smarasi kalyāṇa citram asmin jagatkrame
27. kalyāṇa dṛṣṭānekavidhānālpasargasaṅgagamāgamaḥ
asmin jagatkrame kim kim citram smarasi
27. O blessed one, you who have seen the coming and going of innumerable kinds of creations and attachments, what wonders do you remember in this cosmic order?
भुशुण्ड उवाच ।
महत्तर शिलावृक्षामजाततृणवीरुधम् ।
अशैलवनवृक्षौघां स्मरामीमां धरामधः ॥ २८ ॥
bhuśuṇḍa uvāca ,

28. Bhuśuṇḍa said: I remember this earth below, when it was without great rocks and trees, where no grass or creepers had grown, and without mountains, forests, or multitudes of trees.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि दशवर्षशतानि च ।
भस्मसारभरापूर्णां संस्मरामि धरामधः ॥ २९ ॥

29. I remember the earth below, for ten thousand and one thousand years, filled with a heavy mass of ashes.

anutpannadivādhīśāmaśaktaśaśimaṇḍalām ,

30. I remember the earth below, where the lord of the day (sun) had not appeared, where the moon's disk was powerless, and where the light of day was undifferentiated.
मेरुरत्नतलोद्योतैरर्धप्रकटकोटरम् ।
लोकालोकमिवाक्याढ्याद्रिभुवनं संस्मराम्यहम् ॥ ३१ ॥

31. I remember the world of famed mountains, resembling the Lokāloka mountain, its hollows half-revealed by the glow from the jewel-studded base of Mount Meru.
प्रवृद्धासुरसंग्रामे क्षीयमाणन्तरामिह ।
पलायमानामभितः संस्मरामि धरामिमाम् ॥ ३२ ॥
pravṛddhāsurasaṃgrāme kṣīyamāṇantarāmiha ,
palāyamānāmabhitaḥ saṃsmarāmi dharāmimām 32

32. I remember this earth, here, which was being destroyed from within during the greatly intensifying war of the asuras, and fleeing on all sides.
चतुर्युगानि चाक्रान्तामसुरैर्मत्तकाशिभिः ।
दैत्यान्तःपुरतां प्राप्तां संस्मरामि धरामिमाम् ॥ ३३ ॥
caturyugāni cākrāntāmasurairmattakāśibhiḥ ,
daityāntaḥpuratāṃ prāptāṃ saṃsmarāmi dharāmimām 33

33. I remember this earth, which was overrun for four yugas by demons appearing intoxicated, and had become like the inner chambers of the demons.

अजदेवत्रयीशेषां संस्मरामि जगत्कुटीम् ॥ ३४ ॥

अदृष्टेतरनिर्माणां संस्मरामि धरामिमाम् ॥ ३५ ॥
caturyugārdhamaparaṃ nīrandhrāṃ vanapādapaiḥ ,
adṛṣṭetaranirmāṇāṃ saṃsmarāmi dharāmimām 35

35. I remember this earth, which, for another half-cycle of four yugas, was densely covered with forest trees and showed no other creations.
एवं चतुर्युगं साग्रं नीरन्ध्रैरचलैर्वृताम् ।
अप्रवृत्तजनाचारां संस्मरामि धरामिमाम् ॥ ३६ ॥
evaṃ caturyugaṃ sāgraṃ nīrandhrairacalairvṛtām ,
apravṛttajanācārāṃ saṃsmarāmi dharāmimām 36

36. Thus, I recall this earth, which for a full four-yuga period was densely covered by immovable mountains, and where the customs of humankind had not yet begun.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि मृतदैत्यास्थिपर्वतैः ।
आकीर्णां परितः पूर्णां संस्मरामि धरामिमाम् ॥ ३७ ॥

भयादन्तर्हिताशेषवैमानिकनभश्चराम् ।
द्यां च निर्वृक्षनिःशेषां संस्मरामि तमोमयीम् ॥ ३८ ॥

dyāṃ ca nirvṛkṣaniḥśeṣāṃ saṃsmarāmi tamomayīm 38

38. And I remember the sky (dyām), which, from fear, had lost all its aerial chariots and sky-dwellers, and which was completely devoid of trees and utterly filled with darkness.
अनगस्त्यामगस्त्याशामेकपर्वततां गताम् ।
मत्ते विन्ध्यमहाशैले संस्मरामि जगत्कुटीम् ॥ ३९ ॥
anagastyāmagastyāśāmekaparvatatāṃ gatām ,
matte vindhyamahāśaile saṃsmarāmi jagatkuṭīm 39

39. I remember the entire world (jagātkuṭī), which had become like a single mountain, and whose southern region (Agastya's quarter) was without Agastya, at a time when the great Vindhya mountain was arrogant.
एतांश्चान्यांश्च वृत्तान्तान्संस्मरामि बहूनपि ।
किं तेन बहुनोक्तेन सारं संक्षेपतः शृणु ॥ ४० ॥
etāṃścānyāṃśca vṛttāntānsaṃsmarāmi bahūnapi ,
kiṃ tena bahunoktena sāraṃ saṃkṣepataḥ śṛṇu 40
40. etān ca anyān ca vṛttāntān saṃsmarāmi bahūn api
kim tena bahunā uktena sāram saṃkṣepataḥ śṛṇu
40. etān ca anyān ca bahūn api vṛttāntān saṃsmarāmi

असंख्यातान्मनून्ब्रह्मन्स्मरामि शतशो गतान् ।
सर्वान्संरम्भबहुलांश्चतुर्युगशतानि च ॥ ४१ ॥

sarvānsaṃrambhabahulāṃścaturyugaśatāni ca 41
41. asaṅkhyātān manūn brahman smarāmi śataśaḥ gatān

41. brahman asaṅkhyātān śataśaḥ gatān manūn sarvān

41. O (brahman) Brahman, I remember countless Manus who have passed, hundreds of them. All of them were full of great activity, and I recall hundreds of four-yuga cycles as well.
एकमेव स्वयं शुद्धं पुरुषासुरवर्जितम् ।
आलोकनिचयं चैकं कंचित्सर्गं स्मराम्यहम् ॥ ४२ ॥

ālokanicayaṃ caikaṃ kaṃcitsargaṃ smarāmyaham 42
42. ekam eva svayam śuddham puruṣa asura varjitam

42. I remember a certain creation (sarga) that was unique, inherently pure, devoid of (puruṣas) persons and demons (asuras), and also a singular collection of light.
सुरापं ब्राह्मणं मत्तं निषिद्धसुरशूद्रकम् ।
बहुनाथसतीकं च कंचित्सर्गं स्मराम्यहम् ॥ ४३ ॥
surāpaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ mattaṃ niṣiddhasuraśūdrakam ,
bahunāthasatīkaṃ ca kaṃcitsargaṃ smarāmyaham 43
43. surāpam brāhmaṇam mattam niṣiddhasuraśūdrakam

43. I remember a certain creation (sarga) where Brahmins were addicted to liquor and intoxicated, where (gods) suras and Śūdras were prohibited, and where there were many faithful wives (satis) with multiple husbands.
वृक्षनीरन्ध्रभूपीठमकल्पितमहार्णवम् ।
स्वयसंजातपुरुषं कंचित्सर्गं स्मराम्यहम् ॥ ४४ ॥
vṛkṣanīrandhrabhūpīṭhamakalpitamahārṇavam ,
svayasaṃjātapuruṣaṃ kaṃcitsargaṃ smarāmyaham 44

44. I remember a certain creation (sarga) where the earth's surface was densely covered with trees, where there was no (conceivable) great ocean, and where (puruṣas) beings generated spontaneously.
अपर्वतमभूमिं च व्योमस्थामरमानवम् ।
अचन्द्रार्कप्रकाशाख्यं कंचित्सर्गं स्मराम्यहम् ॥ ४५ ॥
aparvatamabhūmiṃ ca vyomasthāmaramānavam ,
acandrārkaprakāśākhyaṃ kaṃcitsargaṃ smarāmyaham 45
45. a-parvatam a-bhūmim ca vyoma-stham a-mara-mānavam

45. I remember a certain creation (sarga) that was without mountains and without land, situated in space, devoid of gods and humans, and named as being without the light of the moon and sun.

स्वममन्धककुप्चक्रं कंचित्सर्गं स्मराम्यहम् ॥ ४६ ॥

46. I remember a certain creation (sarga) that had no lord (Indra), no king, no division into middle, lower, or higher classes, and was itself a blind multitude of pitfalls.
सर्गप्रारम्भकलना विभागो भुवनत्रये ।
कुलपर्वतसंस्थानं जम्बूद्वीपं पृथक्स्थितम् ॥ ४७ ॥
sargaprārambhakalanā vibhāgo bhuvanatraye ,
kulaparvatasaṃsthānaṃ jambūdvīpaṃ pṛthaksthitam 47

47. I recall the reckoning of the creation's beginning; the division into the three worlds (bhuvana-traya); the arrangement of the cosmic mountain ranges (kulaparvata); and Jambudvipa (Jambū-dvīpa), situated separately.
वर्णधर्मधियां सृष्टिविभागो मण्डलावनेः ।
ऋक्षचक्रकसंस्थानं ध्रुवनिर्माणमेव च ॥ ४८ ॥

48. I recall the division of creation (sṛṣṭi) concerning the understandings of social classes (varṇa) and their specific duties (dharma), the division of the earth's regions, and indeed, the arrangement of the constellations and the creation of the fixed pole star.
जन्मेन्दुभास्करादीनामिन्द्रोपेन्द्रव्यवस्थितिम् ।
हिरण्याक्षापहरणं वराहोद्धरणं क्षितेः ॥ ४९ ॥

49. The birth of the moon, the sun, and other celestial bodies; the establishment of Indra and Upendra; the abduction (killing) of Hiraṇyākṣa; the lifting up of the earth by (the incarnation of) Varāha.
कल्पनं पार्थिवानां च वेदानयनमेव च ।
मन्दरोन्मूलनं चाब्धेरमृतार्थं च मन्थनम् ॥ ५० ॥
kalpanaṃ pārthivānāṃ ca vedānayanameva ca ,
mandaronmūlanaṃ cābdheramṛtārthaṃ ca manthanam 50
50. kalpanam pārthivānām ca vedānayanam eva ca

50. The creation (or disposition) of kings and the recovery of the Vedas; the uprooting of Mount Mandara and the churning of the ocean for the sake of ambrosia.
अजातपक्षो गरुडः सागराणां च संभवः ।
इत्यादिका याः स्मृतयः स्वल्पातीतजगत्क्रमाः ।
बालैरपि हि तास्तात स्मर्यन्ते तासु को ग्रहः ॥ ५१ ॥
ajātapakṣo garuḍaḥ sāgarāṇāṃ ca saṃbhavaḥ ,
ityādikā yāḥ smṛtayaḥ svalpātītajagatkramāḥ ,
bālairapi hi tāstāta smaryante tāsu ko grahaḥ 51
51. ajātapakṣaḥ garuḍaḥ sāgarāṇām ca
saṃbhavaḥ iti ādikā yāḥ smṛtayaḥ
svalpātītajagatkramāḥ bālaiḥ api hi

51. And the birth of Garuḍa without developed wings, and the origin of the oceans - these and similar traditional accounts (smṛtayaḥ), whose sequence of events transpired in a short time past, are indeed remembered even by children, dear father/child. What is the significance of dwelling on them?
