1. Śrīdevī said: He resembled Vasiṣṭha in wealth, attire, age, actions, knowledge, power, and outward conduct, but his behavior was not truly like that of Vasiṣṭha.
वसिष्ठ इति नाम्नासौ तस्याभूदिन्दुसुन्दरी ।
नाम्ना त्वरुन्धती भार्या भूमिव्योमन्यरुन्धती ॥ २ ॥
vasiṣṭha iti nāmnāsau tasyābhūdindusundarī ,
nāmnā tvarundhatī bhāryā bhūmivyomanyarundhatī 2
2. vasiṣṭhaḥ iti nāmnā asau tasya abhūt indusundarī |
nāmnā tu arundhatī bhāryā bhūmivyomani arundhatī ||
2. asau vasiṣṭhaḥ iti nāmnā tasya indusundarī nāmnā
tu arundhatī bhūmivyomani arundhatī bhāryā abhūt
2. This person was named Vasiṣṭha. He had a wife, beautiful as the moon, who was named Arundhatī and truly lived up to her name by being 'unobstructed' (arundhatī) on earth and in the sky.
वित्तवेषवयःकर्मविद्याविभवचेष्टितैः ।
समैव साप्यरुन्धत्या नतु चेतनसत्तया ॥ ३ ॥
vittaveṣavayaḥkarmavidyāvibhavaceṣṭitaiḥ ,
samaiva sāpyarundhatyā natu cetanasattayā 3
3. vittaveṣavayaskarmavidyāvibhavaceṣṭitaiḥ | samā

3. In terms of wealth, attire, age, actions, knowledge, power, and outward conduct, she too was similar to Arundhatī, but not in her essential consciousness (cetanasattā).
अकृत्रिमप्रेमरसा विलासालसगामिनी ।
सास्य संसारसर्वस्वमासीत्कुमुदहासिनी ॥ ४ ॥
akṛtrimapremarasā vilāsālasagāminī ,
sāsya saṃsārasarvasvamāsītkumudahāsinī 4
4. akṛtrimapremarasā vilāsālasagāminī | sā
asya saṃsārasarvasvam āsīt kumudahāsinī ||

4. She, whose essence was natural love, whose gait was gracefully languid, and who smiled like a water lily, was the very all (sarvasva) of his worldly existence (saṃsāra).
स विप्रस्तस्य शैलस्य सानौ सरलशाद्वले ।
कदाचिदुपविष्टः सन्ददर्शाधो महीपतिम् ॥ ५ ॥
sa viprastasya śailasya sānau saralaśādvale ,
kadācidupaviṣṭaḥ sandadarśādho mahīpatim 5
5. saḥ vipraḥ tasya śailasya sānau sarala-śādvale
kadācit upaviṣṭaḥ san dadarśa adhaḥ mahīpatim
5. saḥ vipraḥ kadācit tasya śailasya sarala-śādvale
sānau upaviṣṭaḥ san adhaḥ mahīpatim dadarśa
5. Once, that Brahmin, while seated on a grassy spot on the peak of that mountain, saw the king below.
समग्रपरिवारेण यान्तमाखेटकेच्छया ।
महता सैन्यघोषेण मेरोरिव बिभित्सया ॥ ६ ॥
samagraparivāreṇa yāntamākheṭakecchayā ,
mahatā sainyaghoṣeṇa meroriva bibhitsayā 6
6. samagra-parivāreṇa yāntam ākheṭaka-icchayā
mahatā sainya-ghoṣeṇa meroḥ iva bibhitsayā
6. samagra-parivāreṇa ākheṭaka-icchayā mahatā
sainya-ghoṣeṇa meroḥ iva bibhitsayā yāntam
6. (He saw him) proceeding with his entire retinue, driven by a desire for hunting, and accompanied by a mighty roar from his army, as if he intended to cleave Mount Meru itself.
चामरैः कीर्णचन्द्रांशुपताकाभिर्लतावनम् ।
कुर्वाणं खं सितच्छत्रमण्डलै रूप्यकुट्टिमम् ॥ ७ ॥
cāmaraiḥ kīrṇacandrāṃśupatākābhirlatāvanam ,
kurvāṇaṃ khaṃ sitacchatramaṇḍalai rūpyakuṭṭimam 7
7. cāmaraiḥ kīrṇa-candra-aṃśu-patākābhiḥ latā-vanam
kham sita-cchatra-maṇḍalaiḥ rūpya-kuṭṭimam kurvāṇam
7. cāmaraiḥ kīrṇa-candra-aṃśu-patākābhiḥ sita-cchatra-maṇḍalaiḥ
kham latā-vanam rūpya-kuṭṭimam kurvāṇam
7. (He saw the king) causing the sky to appear like a creeper-forest with fly-whisks and banners resembling scattered moonbeams, and creating the illusion of a silver pavement in the sky with circles of white umbrellas.
अश्वपादूस्वनत्क्ष्माजरेणुपूरावृताम्बरम् ।
हास्तिकोत्तम्भितकरवाताट्टालकगोपितम् ॥ ८ ॥
aśvapādūsvanatkṣmājareṇupūrāvṛtāmbaram ,
hāstikottambhitakaravātāṭṭālakagopitam 8
8. aśva-pādū-svanat-kṣmā-ja-reṇu-pūra-āvṛta-ambaram
hāstika-uttambhita-kara-vāta-aṭṭālaka-gopitam
8. aśva-pādū-svanat-kṣmā-ja-reṇu-pūra-āvṛta-ambaram
hāstika-uttambhita-kara-vāta-aṭṭālaka-gopitam
8. (He saw the king) who, with the sky enveloped by a deluge of dust rising from the earth and stirred by the clamor of horse hooves, was further obscured by the wind-like battlements formed by the upraised trunks of elephants.
महाकलकलावर्तद्रवद्दिग्भूतमण्डलम् ।
कचत्काञ्चनमाणिक्यहारकेयूरमण्डलम् ॥ ९ ॥

kacatkāñcanamāṇikyahārakeyūramaṇḍalam 9

9. Whose vast host moves swiftly with a great, tumultuous uproar, encompassing the directions, and whose retinue shines with glittering gold, rubies, necklaces, and armlets.
तमालोक्य महीपालमिदं चिन्तितवानसौ ।
अहो नु रम्या नृपता सर्वसौभाग्यभासिता ॥ १० ॥
tamālokya mahīpālamidaṃ cintitavānasau ,
aho nu ramyā nṛpatā sarvasaubhāgyabhāsitā 10
10. tam ālokya mahīpālam idam cintitavān asau
aho nu ramyā nṛpatā sarvasaubhāgyabhāsitā
10. asau tam mahīpālam ālokya idam cintitavān
aho nu nṛpatā ramyā sarvasaubhāgyabhāsitā
10. Having seen that king, he thought this: 'Oh, how charming indeed is kingship, shining with all prosperity!'
पदातिरथहस्त्यश्वपताकाच्छत्रचामरैः ।
कदा स्यां दशदिक्कुञ्जपूरकोऽहं महीपतिः ॥ ११ ॥
padātirathahastyaśvapatākācchatracāmaraiḥ ,
kadā syāṃ daśadikkuñjapūrako'haṃ mahīpatiḥ 11
11. padātirathahastyśvapatākācchatracāmaraiḥ
kadā syām daśadikkūñjapūrakaḥ aham mahīpatiḥ
11. kadā aham padātirathahastyśvapatākācchatracāmaraiḥ
daśadikkūñjapūrakaḥ mahīpatiḥ syām
11. When shall I be a king whose (army/retinue), with foot-soldiers, chariots, elephants, horses, banners, umbrellas, and whisks, fills every corner of the ten directions?
कदा मे वायवः कुन्दमकरन्दसुगन्धयः ।
पास्यन्त्यन्तःपुरस्त्रीणां सुरतश्रमसीकरान् ॥ १२ ॥
kadā me vāyavaḥ kundamakarandasugandhayaḥ ,
pāsyantyantaḥpurastrīṇāṃ surataśramasīkarān 12
12. kadā me vāyavaḥ kundamakarandasugandhayaḥ
pāsyanti antaḥpurastrīṇām surataśramasīkarān
12. kadā me kundamakarandasugandhayaḥ vāyavaḥ
antaḥpurastrīṇām surataśramasīkarān pāsyanti
12. When will my winds, fragrant with the nectar of jasmine flowers, inhale the drops of sweat from the exertion of lovemaking of the women of the inner apartments (harem)?
कर्पूरेण पुरन्ध्रीणां पूर्णेन यशसा दिशाम् ।
इन्दूदयावदातानि कदा कुर्यां मुखान्यहम् ॥ १३ ॥
karpūreṇa purandhrīṇāṃ pūrṇena yaśasā diśām ,
indūdayāvadātāni kadā kuryāṃ mukhānyaham 13
13. karpūreṇa purandhrīṇām pūrṇena yaśasā diśām
indūdayāvadātāni kadā kuryām mukhāni aham
13. aham purandhrīṇām indūdayāvadātāni mukhāni
karpūreṇa pūrṇena diśām yaśasā kadā kuryām
13. When shall I make the faces of women, which are as bright as the rising moon, radiant with ample camphor and glorious with fame that pervades all directions?
इत्थं ततःप्रभृत्येष विप्रः संकल्पवानभूत् ।
स्वधर्मनिरतो नित्यं यावज्जीवमतन्द्रितः ॥ १४ ॥
itthaṃ tataḥprabhṛtyeṣa vipraḥ saṃkalpavānabhūt ,
svadharmanirato nityaṃ yāvajjīvamatandritaḥ 14
14. ittham tataḥprabhṛti eṣa vipraḥ saṃkalpavān abhūt
svadharmanirataḥ nityaṃ yāvajjīvam atandritaḥ
14. ittham tataḥprabhṛti eṣa vipraḥ nityaṃ yāvajjīvam
atandritaḥ svadharmanirataḥ saṃkalpavān abhūt
14. Thus, from that time onwards, this Brahmin became resolute, always devoted to his own natural law (dharma) and vigilant throughout his life.
हिमाशनिरिवाम्भोजं जर्जरीकर्तुमादृता ।
जले जर्जरितेवाथ जरा द्विजमुपाययौ ॥ १५ ॥
himāśanirivāmbhojaṃ jarjarīkartumādṛtā ,
jale jarjaritevātha jarā dvijamupāyayau 15
15. himāśaniḥ iva ambhojam jarjarīkartum ādṛtā
jale jarjaritā iva atha jarā dvijam upāyayau
15. atha jarā dvijam himāśaniḥ iva ambhojam
jarjarīkartum ādṛtā jale jarjaritā iva upāyayau
15. Then, old age (jarā) approached the brahmin, eager to shatter him like a hailstone shatters a lotus, and appearing as withered as if she herself had been shattered in water.
आसन्नमरणस्याथ भार्या म्लानिमुपाययौ ।
तस्य शाम्यति पुष्पर्तौ लतेव ग्रीष्मभीतितः ॥ १६ ॥
āsannamaraṇasyātha bhāryā mlānimupāyayau ,
tasya śāmyati puṣpartau lateva grīṣmabhītitaḥ 16
16. āsannamaraṇasya atha bhāryā mlānim upāyayau
tasya śāmyati puṣpartau latā iva grīṣmabhītitaḥ
16. atha āsannamaraṇasya bhāryā mlānim upāyayau
tasya puṣpartau śāmyati latā iva grīṣmabhītitaḥ
16. Then, the wife of the man whose death was imminent also withered away. She was like a creeper that wilts from fear of summer when its flowering season subsides, just as his (the brahmin's) own 'flowering season' (vitality) was fading.
मामथाराधितवती सा ततस्त्वमिवाङ्गना ।
अमरत्वं सुदुष्प्रापं बुद्ध्वेमं सावृणोद्वरम् ॥ १७ ॥
māmathārādhitavatī sā tatastvamivāṅganā ,
amaratvaṃ suduṣprāpaṃ buddhvemaṃ sāvṛṇodvaram 17
17. mām atha ārādhitavatī sā tataḥ tvam iva aṅganā
amaratvam suduṣprāpam buddhvā imam sā avṛṇot varam
17. sā aṅganā tvam iva atha mām ārādhitavatī,
tataḥ suduṣprāpam amaratvam buddhvā,
sā imam varam avṛṇot
17. Then, that woman, having worshipped me just as you have, realizing that immortality was extremely difficult to achieve, chose this boon.
देवि स्वमण्डपादेव जीवो भर्तुर्मृतस्य मे ।
मायासीदित्यतस्तस्याः स एवाङ्गीकृतो मया ॥ १८ ॥
devi svamaṇḍapādeva jīvo bharturmṛtasya me ,
māyāsīdityatastasyāḥ sa evāṅgīkṛto mayā 18
18. devi sva maṇḍapāt eva jīvaḥ bhartuḥ mṛtasya me māyā
āsīt iti atastaḥ tasyāḥ saḥ eva aṅgīkṛtaḥ mayā
18. Devi,
me mṛtasya bhartuḥ jīvaḥ svamaṇḍapāt eva māyā āsīt.
Iti atastaḥ mayā tasyāḥ saḥ eva aṅgīkṛtaḥ.
18. O Goddess, the life (jīva) of her deceased husband appeared from her own wedding pavilion merely as an illusion (māyā) for me. Therefore, that very (boon) was accepted by me.
अथ कालवशाद्विप्रः स पञ्चत्वमुपाययौ ।
तस्मिन्नेव गृहाकाशे जीवाकाशतया स्थितः ॥ १९ ॥
atha kālavaśādvipraḥ sa pañcatvamupāyayau ,
tasminneva gṛhākāśe jīvākāśatayā sthitaḥ 19
19. atha kālavaśāt vipraḥ saḥ pañcatvam upāyayau
tasmin eva gṛhākāśe jīvākāśatayā sthitaḥ
19. Atha,
kālavaśāt,
saḥ vipraḥ pañcatvam upāyayau.
Tasmin eva gṛhākāśe jīvākāśatayā sthitaḥ.
19. Then, by the force of time, that Brahmin (vipraḥ) passed away. He remained within the very space of that house, existing as the space of individual consciousness (jīvākāśa).
संपन्नः प्राक्तनानल्पसंकल्पवशतः स्वयम् ।
आकाशवपुरेवैष पतिः परमशक्तिमान् ॥ २० ॥
saṃpannaḥ prāktanānalpasaṃkalpavaśataḥ svayam ,
ākāśavapurevaiṣa patiḥ paramaśaktimān 20
20. sampannaḥ prāktananālpa saṃkalpavaśataḥ svayam
ākāśavapuḥ eva eṣaḥ patiḥ paramaśaktimān
20. Prāktananālpa saṃkalpavaśataḥ,
svayam,
eṣaḥ paramaśaktimān patiḥ ākāśavapuḥ eva sampannaḥ.
20. This husband, endowed with supreme power, became, by himself, a being whose form was space, due to the power of his numerous past resolves.
प्रभावजितभूपीठः प्रतापाक्रान्तविष्टपः ।
कृपापालितपातालस्त्रिलोकविजयी नृपः ॥ २१ ॥
prabhāvajitabhūpīṭhaḥ pratāpākrāntaviṣṭapaḥ ,
kṛpāpālitapātālastrilokavijayī nṛpaḥ 21
21. prabhāvajitabhūpīṭhaḥ pratāpākrāntaviṣṭapaḥ

21. nṛpaḥ prabhāvajitabhūpīṭhaḥ pratāpākrāntaviṣṭapaḥ
kṛpāpālitapātālastrilokavijayī
21. A king whose splendor conquered the earth, whose valor encompassed the world, whose compassion protected the netherworld, and who was victorious over the three worlds.
कल्पाग्निररिवृक्षाणां स्त्रीणां मकरकेतनः ।
मेरुर्विषयवायूनां साध्वब्जानां दिवाकरः ॥ २२ ॥
kalpāgnirarivṛkṣāṇāṃ strīṇāṃ makaraketanaḥ ,
merurviṣayavāyūnāṃ sādhvabjānāṃ divākaraḥ 22
22. kalpāgniḥ arivṛkṣāṇām strīṇām makaraketanaḥ
meruḥ viṣayavāyūnām sādhvabjānām divākaraḥ
22. arivṛkṣāṇām kalpāgniḥ strīṇām makaraketanaḥ
viṣayavāyūnām meruḥ sādhvabjānām divākaraḥ
22. He is like the conflagration at the end of a world-period (kalpāgni) for the trees of enemies, the god of love (makaraketana) for women, Mount Meru for the winds of sensual objects (viṣaya), and the sun (divākara) for the lotuses of good people.
आदर्शः सर्वशास्त्राणामर्थिनां कल्पपादपः ।
पादपीठं द्विजाग्र्याणां राकाधर्मामृतत्विषः ॥ २३ ॥
ādarśaḥ sarvaśāstrāṇāmarthināṃ kalpapādapaḥ ,
pādapīṭhaṃ dvijāgryāṇāṃ rākādharmāmṛtatviṣaḥ 23
23. ādarśaḥ sarvaśāstrāṇām arthinām kalpapadapaḥ
pādapīṭham dvijāgryāṇām rākādharmāmṛtatviṣaḥ
23. sarvaśāstrāṇām ādarśaḥ arthinām kalpapadapaḥ
dvijāgryāṇām pādapīṭham rākādharmāmṛtatviṣaḥ
23. He is a mirror for all scriptures, a wish-fulfilling tree (kalpapadapa) for petitioners, a footstool for the foremost among the twice-born (dvija), and whose splendor is like the nectar from the full moon and from natural law (dharma).
स्वगृहाभ्यन्तराकाशे चित्ताकाशमयात्मनि ।
तस्मिन्द्विजे शवीभूते भूताकाशशरीरिणि ॥ २४ ॥
svagṛhābhyantarākāśe cittākāśamayātmani ,
tasmindvije śavībhūte bhūtākāśaśarīriṇi 24
24. svagṛhābhyantarākāśe cittākāśamayātmani
tasmin dvije śavībhūte bhūtākāśaśarīriṇi
24. tasmin dvije svagṛhābhyantarākāśe
cittākāśamayātmani śavībhūte bhūtākāśaśarīriṇi
24. In that twice-born (dvija) who, having become like a corpse, dwells within the inner space of his own abode, and whose self (ātman) is one with the expanse of consciousness (cittākāśa), and whose body is the elemental space (bhūtākāśa).
सा तस्य ब्राह्मणी भार्या शोकेनात्यन्तकर्शिता ।
शुष्केव माषशिम्बीका हृदयेन द्विधाभवत् ॥ २५ ॥
sā tasya brāhmaṇī bhāryā śokenātyantakarśitā ,
śuṣkeva māṣaśimbīkā hṛdayena dvidhābhavat 25
25. sā tasya brāhmaṇī bhāryā śokena atyantakarśitā
śuṣkā iva māṣaśimbīkā hṛdayena dvidhā abhavat
25. tasya brāhmaṇī bhāryā sā śokena atyantakarśitā
māṣaśimbīkā śuṣkā iva hṛdayena dvidhā abhavat
25. His Brahmin wife, extremely emaciated by sorrow, felt her heart split in two, like a dried lentil pod.
भर्त्रा सह शवीभूता देहमुत्सृज्य दूरतः ।
आतिवाहिकदेहेन भर्तारं समुपाययौ ॥ २६ ॥
bhartrā saha śavībhūtā dehamutsṛjya dūrataḥ ,
ātivāhikadehena bhartāraṃ samupāyayau 26
26. bhartrā saha śavībhūtā deham utsṛjya dūrataḥ
ātivāhikadehena bhartāram samupāyayau
26. bhartrā saha śavībhūtā deham dūrataḥ utsṛjya
ātivāhikadehena bhartāram samupāyayau
26. Having turned into a corpse alongside her husband and completely abandoned her physical body, she approached her husband with a subtle body.
नदीनिखातमिव तं भर्तारमनुसृत्य सा ।
आजगाम विशोकत्वं सा वासन्तीव मञ्जरी ॥ २७ ॥
nadīnikhātamiva taṃ bhartāramanusṛtya sā ,
ājagāma viśokatvaṃ sā vāsantīva mañjarī 27
27. nadīnikhātam iva tam bhartāram anusṛtya sā
ājagāma viśokatvam sā vāsantī iva mañjarī
27. sā tam bhartāram nadīnikhātam iva anusṛtya
vāsantī mañjarī iva viśokatvam ājagāma
27. Following her husband, just as a river follows a dug channel, she attained a state of freedom from sorrow, like a spring blossom.
तत्रास्य विप्रस्य गृहाणि सन्ति भूस्थावरादीनि धनानि सन्ति ।
अद्याष्टमं वासरमाप्तमृत्योर्जीवो गिरिग्रामककन्दरस्थः ॥ २८ ॥
tatrāsya viprasya gṛhāṇi santi bhūsthāvarādīni dhanāni santi ,
adyāṣṭamaṃ vāsaramāptamṛtyorjīvo girigrāmakakandarasthaḥ 28
28. tatra asya viprasya gṛhāṇi santi
bhūsthāvarādīni dhanāni santi
adya aṣṭamam vāsaram āptamṛtyoḥ
jīvaḥ girigrāmakakandarasthaḥ
28. tatra asya viprasya gṛhāṇi santi
bhūsthāvarādīni dhanāni santi
adya āptamṛtyoḥ aṣṭamam vāsaram
jīvaḥ girigrāmakakandarasthaḥ
28. There are houses, immovable properties, and other wealth belonging to this Brahmin. Today is the eighth day since he died, and his life-force (jīva) resides in a cave within a mountain village.
