हेमोर्मिकादिवन्मिथ्या कथितायाः क्षयोन्मुखम् ।
त्वं महत्त्वमविद्यायाः शृणु राघव कीदृशम् ॥ १ ॥

hemormikādivanmithyā kathitāyāḥ kṣayonmukham ,
tvaṃ mahattvamavidyāyāḥ śṛṇu rāghava kīdṛśam 1
1. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca hemormikādivat mithyā kathitāyāḥ
kṣayonmukham tvam mahattvam avidyāyāḥ śṛṇu rāghava kīdṛśam
1. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca.
rāghava,
tvam mithyā kathitāyāḥ,
hemormikādivat kṣayonmukham avidyāyāḥ mahattvam kīdṛśam [asti iti] śṛṇu.
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: "O Rāghava, listen to what kind of greatness (or extent) ignorance (avidyā) has, even though it is declared to be false, like a golden ornament, and is headed towards destruction."
लवणोऽसौ महीपालस्तथा दृष्ट्वा तदा भ्रमम् ।
द्वितीये दिवसे गन्तुं प्रवृत्तस्तां महाटवीम् ॥ २ ॥
lavaṇo'sau mahīpālastathā dṛṣṭvā tadā bhramam ,
dvitīye divase gantuṃ pravṛttastāṃ mahāṭavīm 2
2. lavaṇaḥ asau mahīpālaḥ tathā dṛṣṭvā tadā bhramam
dvitīye divase gantum pravṛttaḥ tām mahāṭavīm
2. asau mahīpālaḥ lavaṇaḥ tathā bhramam dṛṣṭvā tadā
dvitīye divase tām mahāṭavīm gantum pravṛttaḥ
2. Having thus witnessed the illusion, King Lavaṇa then, on the second day, set out to go to that great forest.
यत्र दृष्टं मया दुःखमरण्यानीं स्मरामि ताम् ।
चित्तादर्शगतां विन्ध्यात्कदाचिल्लभ्यते हि सा ॥ ३ ॥
yatra dṛṣṭaṃ mayā duḥkhamaraṇyānīṃ smarāmi tām ,
cittādarśagatāṃ vindhyātkadācillabhyate hi sā 3
3. yatra dṛṣṭam mayā duḥkham araṇyānīm smarāmi tām
cittādarśagatām vindhyāt kadācit labhyate hi sā
3. yatra mayā duḥkham dṛṣṭam tām araṇyānīm
cittādarśagatām smarāmi hi sā vindhyāt kadācit labhyate
3. I recall that forest (araṇyānī) where I experienced suffering, that which has become reflected in the mirror of my mind. Perhaps that very forest, from the Vindhya (mountains), can indeed be found again.
इति निश्चित्य सचिवैः प्रययौ दक्षिणापथम् ।
पुनर्दिग्विजयायेव प्राप्य विन्ध्यमहीधरम् ॥ ४ ॥
iti niścitya sacivaiḥ prayayau dakṣiṇāpatham ,
punardigvijayāyeva prāpya vindhyamahīdharam 4
4. iti niścitya sacivaiḥ prayayau dakṣiṇāpatham
punaḥ digvijayāya iva prāpya vindhyamahīdharam

4. Thus, having decided with his ministers, he set off for the Southern region (dakṣiṇāpatha), reaching the Vindhya mountain (vindhyamahīdhara), as if for another conquest of the quarters.
पूर्वदक्षिणपाश्चात्यमहार्णवतटस्थलीम् ।
बभ्राम कौतुकात्सर्वां व्योमवीथीमिवोष्णगुः ॥ ५ ॥
pūrvadakṣiṇapāścātyamahārṇavataṭasthalīm ,
babhrāma kautukātsarvāṃ vyomavīthīmivoṣṇaguḥ 5
5. pūrvadakṣiṇapāścātyamahārṇavaṭaṭasthalīm
babhrāma kautukāt sarvām vyomavīthīm iva uṣṇaguḥ
5. uṣṇaguḥ iva vyomavīthīm kautukāt sarvām
pūrvadakṣiṇapāścātyamahārṇavaṭaṭasthalīm babhrāma
5. He wandered all over the eastern, southern, and western coastal regions of the great ocean, out of curiosity, just as the sun (uṣṇagu) traverses the sky's pathway.
अथैकस्मिन्प्रदेशे तां चिन्तामिव पुरोगताम् ।
ददर्शोग्रामरण्यानीं परलोकमहीमिव ॥ ६ ॥
athaikasminpradeśe tāṃ cintāmiva purogatām ,
dadarśogrāmaraṇyānīṃ paralokamahīmiva 6
6. atha ekasmin pradeśe tām cintām iva puragatām
dadarśa ugra-araṇyānīm paraloka-mahīm iva
6. atha ekasmin pradeśe (saḥ) tām ugra-araṇyānīm
cintām iva puragatām paraloka-mahīm iva dadarśa
6. Then, in one particular region, he saw that formidable wilderness, which appeared as if it were anxiety manifest before him, or like the very land of the afterlife.
स तत्र विहरंस्तांस्तान्वृत्तान्तान्सकलानथ ।
दृष्टवान्पृष्टवांश्चैव ज्ञातवांश्च विसिस्मिये ॥ ७ ॥
sa tatra viharaṃstāṃstānvṛttāntānsakalānatha ,
dṛṣṭavānpṛṣṭavāṃścaiva jñātavāṃśca visismiye 7
7. sa tatra viharan tān tān vṛttāntān sakalān atha
dṛṣṭavān pṛṣṭavān ca eva jñātavān ca visismiye
7. atha sa tatra viharan tān tān sakalān vṛttāntān dṛṣṭavān ca eva pṛṣṭavān ca jñātavān (ca),
visismiye
7. Then, wandering there, he saw, inquired about, and understood all those diverse events, and he was greatly astonished.
तान्परिज्ञातवांश्चासीद्व्याधान्पुल्कसजान्पुनः ।
विस्मयाकुलया बुद्ध्या भूयो बभ्राम संभ्रमी ॥ ८ ॥
tānparijñātavāṃścāsīdvyādhānpulkasajānpunaḥ ,
vismayākulayā buddhyā bhūyo babhrāma saṃbhramī 8
8. tān parijñātavān ca āsīt vyādhān pulkasajān punaḥ
vismaya-ākulayā buddhyā bhūyaḥ babhrāma sambhramī
8. (saḥ) tān pulkasajān vyādhān ca parijñātavān āsīt punaḥ
vismaya-ākulayā buddhyā sambhramī (saḥ) bhūyaḥ babhrāma
8. He had recognized those hunters as being of Pulkasa origin. Then, with a mind bewildered by wonder, he, now agitated, wandered further.
अथ प्राप्य महाटव्यां पर्यन्ते धूमधूसरे ।
तमेव ग्रामकं यस्मिन्सोऽभवत्पुष्टपुल्कसः ॥ ९ ॥
atha prāpya mahāṭavyāṃ paryante dhūmadhūsare ,
tameva grāmakaṃ yasminso'bhavatpuṣṭapulkasaḥ 9
9. atha prāpya mahā-aṭavyām paryante dhūma-dhūsare
tam eva grāmakaṃ yasmin saḥ abhavat puṣṭa-pulkasaḥ
9. atha mahā-aṭavyām dhūma-dhūsare paryante tam eva grāmakaṃ prāpya,
yasmin saḥ puṣṭa-pulkasaḥ abhavat
9. Then, reaching the very village at the smoke-grey edge of the great forest - the village where he himself had once been a thriving Pulkasa.
तत्रापश्यज्जनांस्तांस्तांस्ताः स्त्रियस्ताः कुटीरकाः ।
नानाकाराञ्जनाधारांस्तांस्तांश्च वसुधातटान् ॥ १० ॥
tatrāpaśyajjanāṃstāṃstāṃstāḥ striyastāḥ kuṭīrakāḥ ,
nānākārāñjanādhārāṃstāṃstāṃśca vasudhātaṭān 10
10. tatra apaśyat janān tān tān tāḥ striyaḥ tāḥ kuṭīrakāḥ
nānākārān janādhārān tān tān ca vasudhātaṭān
10. tatra saḥ tān tān janān tāḥ striyaḥ tāḥ kuṭīrakāḥ
nānākārān janādhārān tān tān ca vasudhātaṭān apaśyat
10. There he saw those various people, those women, those huts, and those diverse land edges [or riverbanks] that served as dwelling places for people.
तांश्चाकाण्डपरिभ्रष्टांतान्वृक्षांस्तांस्त्वनुव्रजान् ।
तांस्तथैव समुद्देशास्ताऋयाधानेकलान्सुतान् ॥ ११ ॥
tāṃścākāṇḍaparibhraṣṭāṃtānvṛkṣāṃstāṃstvanuvrajān ,
tāṃstathaiva samuddeśāstāṛyādhānekalānsutān 11
11. tān ca akāṇḍaparibhraṣṭān tān vṛkṣān tān tu anuvrajān
tān tathaiva samuddeśāḥ tāṛyādhānakalān sutān
11. tatra saḥ tān ca akāṇḍaparibhraṣṭān tān vṛkṣān tān tu
anuvrajān tān tathaiva samuddeśāḥ tāṛyādhānakalān sutān apaśyat
11. He also saw those trees that had fallen untimely from their branches, and those followers. Likewise, he saw those specified places [or indications], and those sons endowed with particular qualities [or dispositions].
अन्यासु वृद्धासु सबाष्पनेत्रास्वार्तार्तियुक्तासु च वर्णयन्ती ।
अकालकान्तारविशीर्णबन्धुर्दुःखान्यसंख्यानि सखीषु वृद्धा ॥ १२ ॥
anyāsu vṛddhāsu sabāṣpanetrāsvārtārtiyuktāsu ca varṇayantī ,
akālakāntāraviśīrṇabandhurduḥkhānyasaṃkhyāni sakhīṣu vṛddhā 12
12. anyāsu vṛddhāsu sabāṣpanetrāsu
ārtārtīyuktāsu ca varṇayantī
akālakāntāraviśīrṇabandhuḥ
duḥkhāni asaṅkhyāni sakhīṣu vṛddhā
12. vṛddhā akālakāntāraviśīrṇabandhuḥ
anyāsu vṛddhāsu sabāṣpanetrāsu
ca ārtārtīyuktāsu sakhīṣu
asaṅkhyāni duḥkhāni varṇayantī
12. An old woman, whose kinsmen had been scattered in the untimely wilderness, was describing her innumerable sorrows to her friends – other old women who also had tearful eyes and were filled with great distress.
वृद्धा प्रवृद्धोज्ज्वलनेत्रबाष्पा कष्टं बताशुष्ककुचा कृशाङ्गी ।
अवग्रहोग्राशनिदग्धदेशे तत्रार्तनादा परिरोदितीदम् ॥ १३ ॥
vṛddhā pravṛddhojjvalanetrabāṣpā kaṣṭaṃ batāśuṣkakucā kṛśāṅgī ,
avagrahogrāśanidagdhadeśe tatrārtanādā pariroditīdam 13
13. vṛddhā pravṛddhojjvalanetrabāṣpā
kaṣṭam bata aśuṣkakucā kṛśāṅgī
avagrahogrāśanidagdha-deśe
tatra ārtanādā pariroditī idam
13. vṛddhā pravṛddhojjvalanetrabāṣpā
aśuṣkakucā kṛśāṅgī ārtanādā
kaṣṭam bata tatra
avagrahogrāśanidagdha-deśe idam pariroditī
13. The old woman, with her eyes swollen with bright tears, her breasts undried, and her body emaciated, cried out in distress. There, in that region scorched by a severe drought and a fierce thunderbolt, she lamented these words.
हा पुत्रि पुत्रावृतसर्वगात्रे दिनत्रयाभोजनजर्जराङ्गि ।
कृत्वासिना वर्मणि जीर्णदेहाः कथं क्व मुक्ता भवतासवस्ते ॥ १४ ॥
hā putri putrāvṛtasarvagātre dinatrayābhojanajarjarāṅgi ,
kṛtvāsinā varmaṇi jīrṇadehāḥ kathaṃ kva muktā bhavatāsavaste 14
14. hā putrī putrā-āvṛta-sarva-gātre
dina-traya-ābhojana-jarjara-aṅgi
kṛtvā asinā varmaṇi jīrṇa-dehāḥ
katham kva muktāḥ bhavatā asavaḥ te
14. putrī hā putrā-āvṛta-sarva-gātre
dina-traya-ābhojana-jarjara-aṅgi
varmaṇi asinā kṛtvā jīrṇa-dehāḥ te
asavaḥ kathaṃ kva bhavatā muktāḥ
14. Alas, daughter, whose entire body is covered by children, whose limbs are withered by three days of not eating! How and where were the lives of those (warriors), who became worn-out bodies from wielding swords on the battlefield, freed by You (O Destiny)?
तालीदलालम्बनमम्बुदाद्रौ दन्तान्तरस्थारुणसत्फलस्य ।
स्मरामि गुञ्जाफलदाम भर्तुः पुरस्थमुद्रामरहासिनस्ते ॥ १५ ॥
tālīdalālambanamambudādrau dantāntarasthāruṇasatphalasya ,
smarāmi guñjāphaladāma bhartuḥ purasthamudrāmarahāsinaste 15
15. smarāmi te bhartuḥ guñjā-phala-dāma
tālī-dala-ālambanam ambu-da-ādrau
danta-antara-stha-aruṇa-sat-phalasya
purastha-mudrā-amara-hāsinas
15. aham smarāmi te bhartuḥ tālī-dala-ālambanam
ambu-da-ādrau guñjā-phala-dāma
danta-antara-stha-aruṇa-sat-phalasya
purastha-mudrā-amara-hāsinas ca
15. I remember your husband's guñjā fruit garland that was supported by palm leaves on the cloud-covered mountain. I remember him, with excellent red fruits (guñjā berries) between his teeth, and his prominent, eternally smiling expression.
कदम्बजम्बीरलवङ्गगुञ्जाकुञ्जान्तरतस्तु चरत्तरक्षोः ।
पश्यामि पुत्रस्य कदा नु भूयो भयंकराण्युड्यतिवल्गितानि ॥ १६ ॥
kadambajambīralavaṅgaguñjākuñjāntaratastu carattarakṣoḥ ,
paśyāmi putrasya kadā nu bhūyo bhayaṃkarāṇyuḍyativalgitāni 16
16. kadamba-jambīra-lavaṅga-guñjā-kuñja-antarataḥ
tu carat-tarakṣoḥ
paśyāmi putrasya kadā nu bhūyaḥ
bhayaṃkarāṇi uḍyati-valgitāni
16. aham paśyāmi kadā nu bhūyaḥ
kadamba-jambīra-lavaṅga-guñjā-kuñja-antarataḥ
tu carat-tarakṣoḥ putrasya
bhayaṃkarāṇi uḍyati-valgitāni
16. And from within the groves of kadamba, citron, clove, and guñjā plants, when indeed shall I again see my son's frightening leaps and bounds, like those of a wandering hyena?
न तानि कामस्य विलासिनीह मुखेऽपि शोभालसितानि सन्ति ।
तमालनीले चिबुकैकदेशे सुतस्य चान्यास्यगतामिषस्य ॥ १७ ॥
na tāni kāmasya vilāsinīha mukhe'pi śobhālasitāni santi ,
tamālanīle cibukaikadeśe sutasya cānyāsyagatāmiṣasya 17
17. na tāni kāmasya vilāsinī iva
mukhe api śobhā-lasitāni santi
tamāla-nīle cibuka-eka-deśe
sutasya ca anya-āsya-gata-āmiṣasya
17. na tāni śobhā-lasitāni santi
mukhe api kāmasya vilāsinī iva
sutasya ca tamāla-nīle
cibuka-eka-deśe anya-āsya-gata-āmiṣasya
17. Even on that part of my son's chin, which is dark like a tamāla tree and whose flesh, alas, has gone into another's mouth, no lustrous beauty like that of a charming woman (vilāsinī) of love is present.
सुतापनीता सह तेन भर्त्रा यमेन यस्या यमुना समाना ।
तमालवल्लीसहपुष्पगुच्छा समीरणेनेव वने वरेण ॥ १८ ॥
sutāpanītā saha tena bhartrā yamena yasyā yamunā samānā ,
tamālavallīsahapuṣpagucchā samīraṇeneva vane vareṇa 18
18. sutā apanītā saha tena bhartrā yamena yasyā yamunā samānā
| tamālavallīsahapuṣpagucchā samīraṇena iva vane vareṇa ||
18. hā putri (implied) yasyā sutā tena bhartrā yamena saha apanītā (as),
yamunā samānā,
(sā) tamālavallīsahapuṣpagucchā iva vareṇa samīraṇena vane (apanītā).
18. O daughter, carried away by that husband Yama, whose dark beauty was like the Yamuna, (you were swept away) just as a cluster of flowers from a tamāla creeper is carried by the finest breeze in the forest.
हा पुत्रि गुञ्जाफलदामहारे समुन्नताभोगपयोधराङ्गि ।
वातोल्लसत्कज्जललोलवर्णे पर्णाम्बरे बादरजम्बुदन्ते ॥ १९ ॥
hā putri guñjāphaladāmahāre samunnatābhogapayodharāṅgi ,
vātollasatkajjalalolavarṇe parṇāmbare bādarajambudante 19
19. hā putri guñjāphaladāmahāre samunnatābhogapayodharāṅgi
vātollasatkajjalalolavarṇe parṇāmbare bādarajambudante ||
19. hā putri guñjāphaladāmahāre samunnatābhogapayodharāṅgi
vātollasatkajjalalolavarṇe parṇāmbare bādarajambudante
19. Ah, O daughter, you who wore a necklace of guñjā berries, whose body had high, full breasts, whose eyes (or countenance) were restless like kohl stirred by the wind, who wore leaf-garments, and whose teeth were like badara and jambu berries!
हा राजपुत्रेन्दुसमानकान्त संत्यज्य शुद्धान्तविलासिनीस्ताः ।
रतिं प्रयातोऽसि ममात्मजायां न सापि ते सुस्थिरतामुपेता ॥ २० ॥
hā rājaputrendusamānakānta saṃtyajya śuddhāntavilāsinīstāḥ ,
ratiṃ prayāto'si mamātmajāyāṃ na sāpi te susthiratāmupetā 20
20. hā rājaputrendusamānakānta saṃtyajya
śuddhāntavilāsinīḥ tāḥ |
ratim prayātaḥ asi mama ātmajāyām
na sā api te susthiratām upetā ||
20. hā rājaputrendusamānakānta tāḥ
śuddhāntavilāsinīḥ saṃtyajya mama
ātmajāyām ratim prayātaḥ asi
sā api te susthiratām na upetā
20. Alas, O prince, whose splendor was like the moon, having abandoned those pleasure-women of the harem, you sought delight in my daughter. But even she did not attain permanence for you.
संसारनद्याः सुतरङ्गभङ्गैः क्रियाविलासैर्विहितोपहासैः ।
किं नाम तुच्छं न कृतं नृपेशो यद्योजितः पुष्कसकन्यकायाम् ॥ २१ ॥
saṃsāranadyāḥ sutaraṅgabhaṅgaiḥ kriyāvilāsairvihitopahāsaiḥ ,
kiṃ nāma tucchaṃ na kṛtaṃ nṛpeśo yadyojitaḥ puṣkasakanyakāyām 21
21. saṃsāranadyāḥ sutaraṅgabhaṅgaiḥ
kriyāvilāsaiḥ vihitopahāsaiḥ |
kim nāma tuccham na kṛtam nṛpeśaḥ
yat yojitaḥ puṣkasakanyakāyām ||
21. saṃsāranadyāḥ sutaraṅgabhaṅgaiḥ
kriyāvilāsaiḥ vihitopahāsaiḥ
kim nāma tuccham na kṛtam yat
nṛpeśaḥ puṣkasakanyakāyām yojitaḥ
21. Through the turbulent, breaking waves, the playful acts, and the scorn-inviting deeds of the river of transmigratory existence (saṃsāra), what trivial thing has not been accomplished, that the great king was joined with a girl of the Puṣkasa (low-caste) community?
सा त्रस्तसारङ्गसमाननेत्रा स दृप्तशार्दूलसमानवीर्यः ।
उभौ गतावेकपदेन नाशमाशा सहार्थेन यथा महेहा ॥ २२ ॥
sā trastasāraṅgasamānanetrā sa dṛptaśārdūlasamānavīryaḥ ,
ubhau gatāvekapadena nāśamāśā sahārthena yathā mahehā 22
22. sā trasta-sāraṅga-samāna-netrā
sa dṛpta-śārdūla-samāna-vīryaḥ
ubhau gatau eka-padena nāśam
āśā saha arthena yathā mahā-īhā
22. sā trasta-sāraṅga-samāna-netrā sa dṛpta-śārdūla-samāna-vīryaḥ
ubhau eka-padena nāśam gatau yathā mahā-īhā arthena saha
22. She, whose eyes resembled those of a frightened deer, and he, whose valor was like that of a proud tiger, both met their destruction (nāśa) in a single instant, just as a great ambition (mahehā) perishes along with its objective (artha).
मृतेश्वराश्वस्तनिजात्मजास्मि दुर्देशयातास्मि च दुर्गताऽस्मि ।
दुर्जातिजातास्मि महापदेऽस्मि साक्षाद्भयं भोऽस्मि महापदस्मि ॥ २३ ॥
mṛteśvarāśvastanijātmajāsmi durdeśayātāsmi ca durgatā'smi ,
durjātijātāsmi mahāpade'smi sākṣādbhayaṃ bho'smi mahāpadasmi 23
23. mṛta-īśvara-āśvasta-nija-ātmajā asmi
dur-deśa-yātā asmi ca dur-gatā asmi
dur-jāti-jātā asmi mahā-pade asmi
sākṣāt bhayam bho asmi mahā-padā asmi
23. mṛta-īśvara-āśvasta-nija-ātmajā asmi
ca dur-deśa-yātā asmi dur-gatā asmi
dur-jāti-jātā asmi mahā-pade asmi
bho sākṣāt bhayam asmi mahā-padā asmi
23. I am one whose husband is dead and whose own children are distressed. I have arrived in a wretched land, and I am unfortunate. I am born of a low family, and I am in a terrible calamity. Oh, I am fear personified! I am truly great adversity itself!
नीचावमानप्रभवस्य मन्योः क्षुधाप्रपन्नस्य कलत्रकस्य ।
शोकस्य वृत्तावनिवार्यवृत्तेर्नार्यस्म्यनेकायतनं विनाथा ॥ २४ ॥
nīcāvamānaprabhavasya manyoḥ kṣudhāprapannasya kalatrakasya ,
śokasya vṛttāvanivāryavṛtternāryasmyanekāyatanaṃ vināthā 24
24. nīca-avamāna-prabhavasya manyoḥ
kṣudhā-prapannasya kalatrakasya
śokasya vṛttau anivārya-vṛtteḥ
nārī asmi aneka-āyatanam vi-nāthā
24. nārī vi-nāthā asmi aneka-āyatanam
nīca-avamāna-prabhavasya manyoḥ
kṣudhā-prapannasya kalatrakasya
anivārya-vṛtteḥ śokasya vṛttau
24. I am a woman without a protector (vināthā), a repository for many woes: for the wrath (manyu) born of humiliation by the lowly, for a helpless family (kalatraka) overcome by hunger, and for the irresistible flow (vṛtti) of sorrow (śoka).
दैवोपतप्तस्य विबान्धवस्य मूढस्य रूढस्य महाधिभूमौ ।
यत्प्राणनं यन्मरणं महापद्यस्यात्मनिर्जीवितमुत्तमं तत् ॥ २५ ॥
daivopataptasya vibāndhavasya mūḍhasya rūḍhasya mahādhibhūmau ,
yatprāṇanaṃ yanmaraṇaṃ mahāpadyasyātmanirjīvitamuttamaṃ tat 25
25. daiva-upataptasya vi-bāndhavasya
mūḍhasya rūḍhasya mahā-adhi-bhūmau
yat prāṇanam yat maraṇam mahā-apadi
asya ātma-nirjīvitam uttamam tat
25. daiva-upataptasya vi-bāndhavasya mūḍhasya mahā-adhi-bhūmau rūḍhasya asya mahā-apadi yat prāṇanam yat maraṇam,
tat ātma-nirjīvitam uttamam
25. For one afflicted by fate, without kin, bewildered, and deeply entrenched in the realm of great mental anguish, in a dire calamity (mahā-apad), whatever life (prāṇana) or death (maraṇa) comes, that self-preservation (ātma-nirjīvita) is paramount.
जनैर्विहीनस्य कुदेशवृत्तेर्दुःखान्यनन्तानि समुल्लसन्ति ।
सहस्रशाखारससंकुलानि तृणानि वर्षास्विव पर्वतस्य ॥ २६ ॥
janairvihīnasya kudeśavṛtterduḥkhānyanantāni samullasanti ,
sahasraśākhārasasaṃkulāni tṛṇāni varṣāsviva parvatasya 26
26. janaiḥ vihīnasya kudeśavṛtteḥ
duḥkhāni anantāni samullasanti |
sahasraśākhārasasaṅkulāni tṛṇāni
varṣāsu iva parvatasya || 26 ||
26. janaiḥ vihīnasya kudeśavṛtteḥ anantāni duḥkhāni samullasanti,
parvatasya varṣāsu sahasraśākhārasasaṅkulāni tṛṇāni iva.
26. Endless sufferings arise for one who is devoid of people and whose livelihood is in an inhospitable land, just as grasses, tangled with a thousand-branched sap, flourish on a mountain during the rainy season.
एवं लपन्तीं स्वकलत्रवृद्धां दासीभिराश्वास्य नृपः स्त्रियं ताम् ।
पप्रच्छ किंवृत्तमिहैव का च का ते सुता कश्च सुतस्तवेति ॥ २७ ॥
evaṃ lapantīṃ svakalatravṛddhāṃ dāsībhirāśvāsya nṛpaḥ striyaṃ tām ,
papraccha kiṃvṛttamihaiva kā ca kā te sutā kaśca sutastaveti 27
27. evam lapantīm svakalatravṛddhām dāsībhiḥ
āśvāsya nṛpaḥ striyam tām |
papraccha kimvṛttam iha eva kā ca kā te
sutā kaḥ ca sutaḥ tava iti || 27 ||
27. dāsībhiḥ āśvāsya,
evam lapantīm svakalatravṛddhām tām striyam nṛpaḥ papraccha – "iha eva kimvṛttam? kā ca? te kā sutā? ca tava kaḥ sutaḥ?" iti.
27. After the maidservants had consoled that old woman, his wife, who was lamenting in this manner, the king asked her: "What has happened here? And who are you? Who is your daughter? And who is your son?"
उवाच सा बाष्पविलोचनाथ ग्रामस्त्वयं पुष्पसघोषनामा ।
इहाभवत्पुष्कसकः पतिर्मे बभूव तस्येन्दुसमा सुतैका ॥ २८ ॥
uvāca sā bāṣpavilocanātha grāmastvayaṃ puṣpasaghoṣanāmā ,
ihābhavatpuṣkasakaḥ patirme babhūva tasyendusamā sutaikā 28
28. uvāca sā bāṣpavilocanā atha grāmaḥ
tu ayam puṣpasaghoṣanāmā | iha
abhavat puṣkasakaḥ patiḥ me babhūva
tasya indusamā sutā ekā || 28 ||
28. atha bāṣpavilocanā sā uvāca – "ayam grāmaḥ tu puṣpasaghoṣanāmā.
iha me patiḥ puṣkasakaḥ abhavat.
tasya ekā indusamā sutā babhūva.
"
28. Then she, with tearful eyes, said: "This village is named Puṣpasaghoṣa. My husband, Puṣkasaka, lived here. He had one daughter, who was as beautiful as the moon."
सा दैवयोगात्पतिमिन्द्रतुल्यमिहागतं दैववशेन भूपम् ।
अयं विशीर्णं मधुकुम्भमाप वने वराकी करभी यथैका ॥ २९ ॥
sā daivayogātpatimindratulyamihāgataṃ daivavaśena bhūpam ,
ayaṃ viśīrṇaṃ madhukumbhamāpa vane varākī karabhī yathaikā 29
29. sā daivayogāt patim indratulyam
iha āgatam daivavaśena bhūpam | ayam
viśīrṇam madhukumbham āpa vane
varākī karabhī yathā ekā || 29 ||
29. sā daivayogāt daivavaśena iha āgatam indratulyam bhūpam patim āpa.
ayam viśīrṇam madhukumbham vane varākī karabhī ekā yathā āpa.
29. By a conjunction of destiny (daivayoga), she (my daughter) found a husband, a king comparable to Indra, who had arrived here by the power of fate. This king (you) obtained a broken honey-pot in the forest, just as a wretched female camel would.
सा तेन सार्धं सुचिरं सुखानि भुक्त्वा प्रसूता तनयाः सुतांश्च ।
वृद्धिं गता काननकोटरेऽस्मिंस्तुम्बीलता पादपसंश्रितेव ॥ ३० ॥
sā tena sārdhaṃ suciraṃ sukhāni bhuktvā prasūtā tanayāḥ sutāṃśca ,
vṛddhiṃ gatā kānanakoṭare'smiṃstumbīlatā pādapasaṃśriteva 30
30. sā tena sārdham suciram sukhāni
bhuktvā prasūtā tanayāḥ sutān
ca vṛddhim gatā kānana koṭare
asmin tumbīlatā pādapa saṃśritā iva
30. sā tena sārdham suciram sukhāni
bhuktvā tanayāḥ ca sutān prasūtā
asmin kānana koṭare pādapa
saṃśritā iva tumbīlatā vṛddhim gatā
30. She, having enjoyed pleasures with him for a long time, gave birth to sons and daughters. She grew up in this forest hollow, just like a gourd creeper that is supported by a tree.
