1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: On that summit of Mount Meru, whose cloud-like tresses were filled with blossoms, I beheld a part of the (cosmic age) kalpa, standing like a wheel of branches.
पुष्परेण्वभ्रवलितं रत्नस्तबकदन्तुरम् ।
उत्सेधनिर्जिताकाशं शृङ्गे शृङ्गमिवार्पितम् ॥ २ ॥

2. It was covered with clouds of flower pollen, rough with clusters of jewels, its height surpassing the sky, as if one peak were placed upon another.
ताराद्विगुणपुष्पौघं मेघद्विगुणपल्लवम् ।
रश्मिद्विगुणरेण्वभ्रं तडिद्द्विगुणमञ्जरीम् ॥ ३ ॥

3. It had masses of flowers twice as numerous as the stars, foliage twice as abundant as clouds, clouds of pollen twice the density of sunbeams, and flower clusters twice the radiance of lightning.
स्कन्धेषु किन्नरीगीतद्विगुणभ्रमरस्वनम् ।
दोलालोलाप्सरोलोकद्विगुणीकृतपल्लवम् ॥ ४ ॥

4. On its slopes, it resounded with the humming of bees, which was twice the volume of the Kinnarīs' songs, and its foliage was made twice as abundant by the throngs of Apsarases swaying playfully on swings.
सिद्धगन्धर्वसंघातद्विगुणोत्थविहंगमम् ।
रत्नकान्त्यच्छनीहारद्विगुणत्वग्वृतांशुकम् ॥ ५ ॥

5. It had flocks of birds rising, whose numbers were twice that of the assembled Siddhas and Gandharvas, and its covering (or clothing) was twice as lustrous as pure snow due to the brilliance of its jewels.
चन्द्रबिम्बसमाश्लेषद्विगुणाङ्गबृहत्फलम् ।
मूलसंलीनकल्पाभ्रद्विगुणीकृतपर्वकम् ॥ ६ ॥

6. Describing something whose enormous fruits appear doubled due to their embrace with the moon's orb, and whose segments are made to look double by the clouds of a cosmic eon (kalpa) that are absorbed into its roots.
सुरसंवलितस्कन्धं पत्रविश्रान्तकिन्नरम् ।
निकुञ्जकुञ्जजीमूतं कच्छसुप्तसुरादिकम् ॥ ७ ॥

7. Whose main trunks or branches are thronged with gods, where Kinnaras rest upon its leaves, whose groves and thickets are filled with clouds, and where gods and other celestial beings sleep in its secluded, root-bound areas.
स्वाकारविपुलं भृङ्गानुत्सार्य वलयस्वनैः ।
अप्सरोभ्रमरीभिश्च गृहीतकुसुमान्तरम् ॥ ८ ॥
svākāravipulaṃ bhṛṅgānutsārya valayasvanaiḥ ,
apsarobhramarībhiśca gṛhītakusumāntaram 8
8. svākāravipulam bhṛṅgān utsārya valayasvanaiḥ

8. Vast in its own form, from which Apsarases, acting like bees, drive away the actual bees with the jingling sounds of their bracelets, and then gather flowers from its interior.
सुरकिंनरगन्धर्वविद्याधरवरान्वितम् ।
जगज्जालमिवानन्तदशाशाकाशपूरकम् ॥ ९ ॥

9. Accompanied by excellent gods, Kinnaras, Gandharvas, and Vidyādharas; it is like the very network of the universe, filling the endless expanse of the sky in all ten directions.
नीरन्ध्रकलिकाजालं नीरन्ध्रमृदुपल्लवम् ।
नीरन्ध्रविकसत्पुष्पं नीरन्ध्रवनमालितम् ॥ १० ॥

10. Dense with a multitude of buds, thick with soft sprouts, abundant with blooming flowers, and richly adorned with forest garlands.
नीरन्ध्रमञ्जरीपुञ्जं नीरन्ध्रमणिगुच्छकम् ।
नीरन्ध्रांशुकरत्नाढ्यं लताविलसनाकुलम् ॥ ११ ॥

11. Dense with masses of flower clusters, thick with bunches of jewels, abundant with brilliant jewel-like rays, and teeming with the graceful sway of vines.
तस्य कक्षेषु कुञ्जेषु लतापत्रेषु पर्वसु ।
पुष्पेष्वालयसंलीनान्विहगान्दृष्टवानहम् ॥ १३ ॥
tasya kakṣeṣu kuñjeṣu latāpatreṣu parvasu ,
puṣpeṣvālayasaṃlīnānvihagāndṛṣṭavānaham 13
13. tasya kakṣeṣu kuñjeṣu latāpatreṣu parvasu
puṣpeṣu ālayasaṃlīnān vihagān dṛṣṭavān aham
13. aham tasya kakṣeṣu kuñjeṣu latāpatreṣu

13. I saw birds hidden in their nests within its thickets, in its bowers, among the leaves of its vines, on the knots of its plants, and upon its flowers.
निशानाथकलाखण्डमृणालशकलैधितान् ।
अर्जुनाम्भोजिनीकन्दकवलान्ब्रह्मसारसान् ॥ १४ ॥
niśānāthakalākhaṇḍamṛṇālaśakalaidhitān ,
arjunāmbhojinīkandakavalānbrahmasārasān 14
14. niśānāthakalākhaṇḍamṛṇālaśakalaiḥ edhitān

14. I saw divine cranes (brahmasārasān) who were nourished by morsels of lotus stalks resembling fragments of the moon's digits, and who partook of mouthfuls of white lotus roots.
विरंचेरथ हंसानां पोतकान्सामगायिनः ।
ॐकारवेदसुहृदो ब्रह्मविद्यानुशासनान् ॥ १५ ॥
viraṃceratha haṃsānāṃ potakānsāmagāyinaḥ ,
oṃkāravedasuhṛdo brahmavidyānuśāsanān 15
15. virañceḥ atha haṃsānām potakān sāmagāyinaḥ
oṃkāravedasuhṛdaḥ brahmavidyānuśāsanān
15. atha virañceḥ haṃsānām potakān sāmagāyinaḥ
oṃkāravedasuhṛdaḥ brahmavidyānuśāsanān
15. And then, the young swans of Brahmā, who chanted the Sāman hymns, were devoted to the Vedas and the sacred syllable Oṃ, and were disciplined in the knowledge of Brahman (brahmavidyā).
उद्गीर्णमन्त्रनिचयान्स्वाहाकारनिभस्वनान् ।
अस्थिनैकतडित्पुञ्जनीलमेघसमोपमान् ॥ १६ ॥
udgīrṇamantranicayānsvāhākāranibhasvanān ,
asthinaikataḍitpuñjanīlameghasamopamān 16

16. From whom collections of mantras were uttered, whose cries resembled the sacred "Svāhā" sound, and who resembled numerous heaps of bone-white lightning against dark blue clouds.
देवैर्निरीक्षितान्नित्यं यज्ञवेदिलतादलान् ।
शुकान्कार्शानवाञ्छयामाञ्छिशूञ्छिखिशिखाशिखान् ॥ १७ ॥
devairnirīkṣitānnityaṃ yajñavedilatādalān ,
śukānkārśānavāñchayāmāñchiśūñchikhiśikhāśikhān 17
17. devaiḥ nirīkṣitān nityam yajñavedilatādalān śukān
kārśān avāñchayā amān śiśūn śikhiśikhāśikhān
17. śukān kārśān yajñavedilatādalān amān śiśūn śikhiśikhāśikhān (ca),
devaiḥ nityam avāñchayā nirīkṣitān
17. Parrots, slender and green like the leaves of creepers on the altars of "yajña" (sacrifices), always gazed upon with longing by the gods, these countless young ones possessed crests like the plumes of peacocks.
गौरीरक्षितबर्हौघान्कौमारान्वरबर्हिणः ।
स्कन्दोपन्यस्तनिःशेषशैवविज्ञानकोविदान् ॥ १८ ॥
gaurīrakṣitabarhaughānkaumārānvarabarhiṇaḥ ,
skandopanyastaniḥśeṣaśaivavijñānakovidān 18
18. gaurīrakṣitabarhaughān kaumārān varabarhiṇaḥ

18. These were excellent peacocks, whose abundant plumes were protected by Gaurī, who belonged to Kumāra (Skanda), and who were proficient in the complete Śaiva knowledge imparted by Skanda himself.
व्योम्नैव जातनष्टानां महतां व्योमपक्षिणाम् ।
बन्धूनाबद्धनिलयाञ्छरदभ्रसमाकृतीन् ॥ १९ ॥
vyomnaiva jātanaṣṭānāṃ mahatāṃ vyomapakṣiṇām ,
bandhūnābaddhanilayāñcharadabhrasamākṛtīn 19
19. vyomnā eva jātanāṣṭānām mahatām vyomapakṣiṇām
bandhūn ābaddhanilayān śaradabhrasamākṛtīn

19. Great sky-birds, those whose existence arises and perishes in the very sky, appearing as kinsmen with fixed dwellings, and having forms like autumn clouds,
विरंचिहंसजानन्यानन्यानग्निशुकोद्भवान् ।
कौमारबर्हिजानन्यानन्यानम्बरपक्षिजान् ॥ २० ॥
viraṃcihaṃsajānanyānanyānagniśukodbhavān ,
kaumārabarhijānanyānanyānambarapakṣijān 20
20. virañcihaṃsajān anyān anyān agniśukodbhavān
kaumārabarhijān anyān anyān ambarapakṣijān

20. also others born from Brahmā's swans, others arisen from fire-parrots, others born from Kumāra's peacocks, and still others originating from sky-birds,
द्वितुण्डांश्च भरद्वाजान्हेमचूडान्विहंगमान् ।
कलविङ्कबलान्गृध्रान्कोकिलान्क्रौञ्चकुक्कुटान् ॥ २१ ॥
dvituṇḍāṃśca bharadvājānhemacūḍānvihaṃgamān ,
kalaviṅkabalāngṛdhrānkokilānkrauñcakukkuṭān 21
21. dvituṇḍān ca bharadvājān hemacūḍān vihaṃgamān

21. and two-beaked birds, Bharadvāja birds (larks), golden-crested birds, various other winged creatures; also kalaviṅkas (sparrows), balas (crows), vultures, cuckoos, cranes, and domestic fowls,
भासचाषबलाकादीन्बहूनन्यांश्च राघव ।
भूतौघं जगतीवाहं दृष्टवांस्तत्र पक्षिणः ॥ २२ ॥
bhāsacāṣabalākādīnbahūnanyāṃśca rāghava ,
bhūtaughaṃ jagatīvāhaṃ dṛṣṭavāṃstatra pakṣiṇaḥ 22
22. bhāsacāṣabalākādīn bahūn anyān ca rāghava
bhūtaugham jagati iva aham dṛṣṭavān tatra pakṣiṇaḥ
22. rāghava aham tatra jagati iva bhūtaugham pakṣiṇaḥ
bahūn anyān ca bhāsacāṣabalākādīn dṛṣṭavān
22. O Rāghava, I saw there a multitude of beings, birds, as if on earth, including eagles, blue jays, cranes, and many other such creatures.
दक्षिणस्कन्धशाखायां स्थितायां वै दवीयसि ।
अथाहं दृष्टवान्पुष्टपत्रायामम्बरस्थितः ॥ २३ ॥
dakṣiṇaskandhaśākhāyāṃ sthitāyāṃ vai davīyasi ,
athāhaṃ dṛṣṭavānpuṣṭapatrāyāmambarasthitaḥ 23
23. dakṣiṇaskandhaśākhāyām sthitāyām vai davīyasi
atha aham dṛṣṭavān puṣṭapatrāyām ambarastithaḥ
23. atha aham ambarastithaḥ vai davīyasi sthitāyām
dakṣiṇaskandhaśākhāyām puṣṭapatrāyām dṛṣṭavān
23. Then, from my position in the sky, I saw a branch, situated far away on the southern side, which was adorned with lush leaves.
काले काकोलवलयं मञ्जरीजालमालितम् ।
लोकालोकाचलेऽरण्ये कल्पाभ्रौघमिव स्थितम् ॥ २४ ॥
kāle kākolavalayaṃ mañjarījālamālitam ,
lokālokācale'raṇye kalpābhraughamiva sthitam 24
24. kāle kākolavalayam mañjarījālamālitam
lokālokācale araṇye kalpābhrāugham iva sthitam

24. At that time, on the Lokāloka mountain, in a forest, there was a dark mass of crows, adorned with clusters of blossoms, appearing like a host of doomsday clouds.
तत्र पश्याम्यहं यावदेकान्ते स्कन्धकोटरे ।
विचित्रकुसुमास्तीर्णे विविधामोदशालिनि ॥ २५ ॥
tatra paśyāmyahaṃ yāvadekānte skandhakoṭare ,
vicitrakusumāstīrṇe vividhāmodaśālini 25
25. tatra paśyāmi aham yāvat ekānte skandhakoṭare
vicitrakusumāstīrṇe vividhāmodaśālini
25. tatra aham yāvat vicitrakusumāstīrṇe
vividhāmodaśālini ekānte skandhakoṭare paśyāmi
25. There, as I looked, I saw within a secluded hollow of the branch, which was adorned with diverse flowers and filled with various pleasing fragrances.
पुण्यकृद्योषितां स्वर्गे प्रियस्तबकवासिताः ।
अपरिक्षुभिताकाराः सभायां वायसाः स्थिताः ॥ २६ ॥
puṇyakṛdyoṣitāṃ svarge priyastabakavāsitāḥ ,
aparikṣubhitākārāḥ sabhāyāṃ vāyasāḥ sthitāḥ 26
26. puṇyakṛt yoṣitām svarge priyastabakavāsitāḥ
aparikṣubhitākārāḥ sabhāyām vāyasāḥ sthitāḥ
26. sabhāyām puṇyakṛdyoṣitām svarge priyastabakavāsitāḥ
aparikṣubhitākārāḥ vāyasāḥ sthitāḥ
26. There, in that assembly, crows were situated, appearing undisturbed and scented with lovely flower clusters, as if they were in the heaven of virtuous women.
विभेद्यमेघा वातेन समेनेवापसारिताः ।
तेषां मध्ये स्थितः श्रीमान्भुशुण्डः प्रोन्नताकृतिः ॥ २७ ॥
vibhedyameghā vātena samenevāpasāritāḥ ,
teṣāṃ madhye sthitaḥ śrīmānbhuśuṇḍaḥ pronnatākṛtiḥ 27
27. vibhadyameghāḥ vātena samena iva apasāritāḥ teṣām
madhye sthitaḥ śrīmān bhusuṇḍaḥ pronnatākṛtiḥ
27. vātena samena iva apasāritāḥ vibhadyameghāḥ (iva) teṣām
madhye śrīmān pronnatākṛtiḥ bhusuṇḍaḥ sthitaḥ (āsīt)
27. Among them stood the glorious (śrīmān) Bhusuṇḍa, with an exalted form, like clouds that have been torn apart and dispersed by an equal wind.
मध्ये च काचखण्डानामिन्द्रनील इवोन्नतः ।
परिपूर्णमना मानी समः सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरः ॥ २८ ॥
madhye ca kācakhaṇḍānāmindranīla ivonnataḥ ,
paripūrṇamanā mānī samaḥ sarvāṅgasundaraḥ 28
28. madhye ca kācakhaṇḍānām indranīlaḥ iva unnataḥ
paripūrṇamanāḥ mānī samaḥ sarvāṅgasundaraḥ
28. ca kācakhaṇḍānām madhye indranīlaḥ iva unnataḥ,
paripūrṇamanāḥ,
mānī,
samaḥ,
sarvāṅgasundaraḥ (saḥ āsīt)
28. And he was exalted like a sapphire among fragments of glass, with a perfectly fulfilled mind, dignified, tranquil, and beautiful in every limb.
प्राणस्पन्दावधानेन नित्यमन्तर्मुखः सुखी ।
चिरंजीवीति विख्यातश्चिरजीवितया तया ॥ २९ ॥
prāṇaspandāvadhānena nityamantarmukhaḥ sukhī ,
ciraṃjīvīti vikhyātaścirajīvitayā tayā 29
29. prāṇaspanda-avadhānena nityam antarmukhaḥ
sukhī cirañjīvī iti vikhyātaḥ cirajīvitayā tayā
29. (saḥ) nityam prāṇaspanda-avadhānena antarmukhaḥ sukhī (āsīt) (saḥ) tayā cirajīvitayā cirañjīvī iti vikhyātaḥ (āsīt) ।
29. Always introspective and happy due to his concentration (dhyāna) on the vibration of life-force (prāṇa), he was renowned as 'Chirañjīvī' (long-lived) because of that very longevity.
जगद्विदितदीर्घायुर्भुशुण्ड इति विश्रुतः ।
युगागमापायदशादशनप्रौढमानसः ॥ ३० ॥
jagadviditadīrghāyurbhuśuṇḍa iti viśrutaḥ ,
yugāgamāpāyadaśādaśanaprauḍhamānasaḥ 30
30. jagadviditadīrghāyuḥ bhusuṇḍaḥ iti viśrutaḥ
yugāgamāpāyadaśādarśanaprauḍhamānasaḥ
30. (saḥ) jagadviditadīrghāyuḥ (āsīt) (saḥ) bhusuṇḍaḥ iti viśrutaḥ (āsīt) (saḥ) yugāgamāpāyadaśādarśanaprauḍhamānasaḥ (āsīt) ।
30. He was renowned as Bhusuṇḍa, whose long life is known throughout the world, and whose mind had matured by witnessing the conditions of the arrival and departure of ages (yugas).
प्रतिकल्पं च गणयन्खिन्नश्चक्रपरम्पराम् ।
जन्मनां लोकपालानां शर्वशक्रमरुत्वताम् ॥ ३१ ॥
pratikalpaṃ ca gaṇayankhinnaścakraparamparām ,
janmanāṃ lokapālānāṃ śarvaśakramarutvatām 31
31. pratikalpaṃ ca gaṇayan khinnaḥ cakraparamparām
janmanām lokapālānām śarvaśakramarutvatām
31. ca gaṇayan khinnaḥ pratikalpaṃ cakraparamparām
janmanām lokapālānām śarvaśakramarutvatām
31. And, weary, counting the continuous cycles of births of the world-guardians, like Śarva, Śakra, and the Maruts, through every cosmic epoch (kalpa).
संस्मर्ता समतीतानां सुरासुरमहीभृताम् ।
प्रसन्नगम्भीरमनाः पेशलः स्निग्धमुग्धवाक् ॥ ३२ ॥

32. He is a keen rememberer of the gods, asuras, and kings who have long passed away. His mind is serene and profound; he is graceful, and his speech is gentle and charming.
अव्यक्तवक्ता विज्ञाता निर्ममो निरहंकृतिः ।
सुहृद्बन्धुस्तथा मित्रं मृत्युपुत्रो गुरुप्रभुः ।
सर्वदा सर्वथा सत्यं सर्वं सर्वस्य संस्तवे ॥ ३३ ॥
avyaktavaktā vijñātā nirmamo nirahaṃkṛtiḥ ,
suhṛdbandhustathā mitraṃ mṛtyuputro guruprabhuḥ ,
sarvadā sarvathā satyaṃ sarvaṃ sarvasya saṃstave 33

33. He is a subtle speaker, discerning, free from possessiveness (nirmama), and without ego (ahaṅkāra). He is a true friend, a kinsman, and also a companion; he is the son of death, and a master-teacher. Always, in every way, he represents truth and all reality for everyone, deserving of universal praise.
सौम्यः प्रसन्नमधुरो रसवान्महात्मा हृद्यः सरोवर इवान्तरखण्डशैत्यः ।
हृत्पुण्डरीककुहरं व्यवहारवेत्ता गाम्भीर्यमच्छमजहात्प्रकटाशयश्रीः ॥ ३४ ॥
saumyaḥ prasannamadhuro rasavānmahātmā hṛdyaḥ sarovara ivāntarakhaṇḍaśaityaḥ ,
hṛtpuṇḍarīkakuharaṃ vyavahāravettā gāmbhīryamacchamajahātprakaṭāśayaśrīḥ 34
34. saumyaḥ prasannamadhuraḥ rasavān mahātmā
hṛdyaḥ sarovaraḥ iva antarakhaṇḍaśaityaḥ
hṛtpuṇḍarīkakuharam vyavahāravettā
gāmbhīryam accham ajahāt prakaṭāśayaśrīḥ
34. saumyaḥ prasannamadhuraḥ rasavān mahātmā
hṛdyaḥ antarakhaṇḍaśaityaḥ sarovaraḥ
iva vyavahāravettā hṛtpuṇḍarīkakuharam
accham gāmbhīryam ajahāt prakaṭāśayaśrīḥ
34. He is gentle, charmingly sweet, full of essence, a great soul (mahātmā), and delightful to the heart, like a lake with an inherently cool interior. Though he is an expert in practical affairs, he never abandoned the clear profundity within the cave of his heart-lotus, and his splendor (śrī) arises from his manifest intentions.
