अत्रैवोदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
राक्षस्योक्तं महाप्रश्नजालमावलिताखिलम् ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: In this regard, they recount this ancient narrative (itihāsa), spoken by a demoness (rākṣasī), which was a great web of questions encompassing everything.
अस्ति कज्जलपङ्काद्रेरिवोग्रा शालभञ्जिका ।
हिमाद्रेरुत्तरे पार्श्वे कर्कटी नाम राक्षसी ॥ २ ॥
asti kajjalapaṅkādrerivogrā śālabhañjikā ,
himādreruttare pārśve karkaṭī nāma rākṣasī 2
2. asti kajjalapaṅkādreḥ iva ugrā śālabhañjikā
himādreḥ uttare pārśve karkaṭī nāma rākṣasī
2. himādreḥ uttare pārśve kajjalapaṅkādreḥ iva
ugrā śālabhañjikā nāma karkaṭī rākṣasī asti
2. On the northern side of the Himalayas (himādri), there is a fierce ogress (rākṣasī) named Karkaṭī, who is like a terrifying statue (śālabhañjikā) from a mountain of collyrium-mud.
विषूचिकाभिधाना च नाम्नाप्यन्यायवाधिका ।
विन्ध्याटवीव देहेन शुष्का कार्श्यमुपागता ॥ ३ ॥
viṣūcikābhidhānā ca nāmnāpyanyāyavādhikā ,
vindhyāṭavīva dehena śuṣkā kārśyamupāgatā 3
3. viṣūcikābhidhānā ca nāmnā api anyāyavādhikā
vindhyāṭavī iva dehena śuṣkā kārśyam upāgatā
3. ca nāmnā api viṣūcikābhidhānā anyāyavādhikā (sā)
dehena vindhyāṭavī iva śuṣkā kārśyam upāgatā
3. She is also known by the name Viṣūcikā (cholera), and is an afflicter of injustice. Her body, like a Vindhya forest, is dry and has attained emaciation.
महाबलाग्निनयना रोदोरन्ध्रार्धपूरणी ।
नीलाम्बरधरा कृष्णा देहबद्धेव यामिनी ॥ ४ ॥
mahābalāgninayanā rodorandhrārdhapūraṇī ,
nīlāmbaradharā kṛṣṇā dehabaddheva yāminī 4

4. She possesses eyes like a powerful fire, and fills half the cosmic space (between heaven and earth). Clad in blue garments and dark-hued, she is like the night personified.
नीहारवसनच्छन्ना मेदुराभ्रशिरःपटा ।
लम्बाभ्रबिम्बोल्लसिता नित्योत्थतिमिरोर्ध्वजा ॥ ५ ॥
nīhāravasanacchannā medurābhraśiraḥpaṭā ,
lambābhrabimbollasitā nityotthatimirordhvajā 5

5. She is covered by garments of mist, her head-covering is of dense clouds, she shines with dangling discs of clouds, and her banner is of perpetually rising darkness.
स्थिरविद्युल्लतानेत्रा तमालतरुजानुका ।
वैदूर्यशूर्पाग्रनखी भस्मनीहारहासिनी ॥ ६ ॥
sthiravidyullatānetrā tamālatarujānukā ,
vaidūryaśūrpāgranakhī bhasmanīhārahāsinī 6

6. Her eyes are like streaks of steady lightning, her knees are like tamāla trees. Her fingernails are like the tips of lapis lazuli winnowing baskets, and her smile is like mist upon ashes.
निर्मांसनरदेहौघपुष्पस्रग्दामभूषिता ।
सर्वाङ्गोदात्तसंप्रोतशवमालाविराजिता ॥ ७ ॥
nirmāṃsanaradehaughapuṣpasragdāmabhūṣitā ,
sarvāṅgodāttasaṃprotaśavamālāvirājitā 7
7. nirmāṃsanaradehaughapuṣpasragdāmabhūṣitā
sarvāṅgodāttasaṃprotaśavamālāvirājitā

7. Adorned with garlands of flowers made from masses of fleshless human bodies, she shines splendidly, embellished with garlands of corpses strung together through all their limbs.
वेतालावेशविचलत्कालकङ्कालकुण्डला ।
अर्कादानोत्कदीर्घाग्रभीमोग्रभुजमण्डला ॥ ८ ॥

arkādānotkadīrghāgrabhīmograbhujamaṇḍalā 8

8. Her earrings are black skeletons that tremble from the possession of vetālas. She has a circle of long, terrible, and fierce arms, whose fingertips are eager to seize the sun.
तस्या विपुलकायत्वाद्दुर्लभत्वान्निजान्धसः ।
अतृप्तोऽर्णवलेखाया इवाभूज्जाठरोऽनलः ॥ ९ ॥
tasyā vipulakāyatvāddurlabhatvānnijāndhasaḥ ,
atṛpto'rṇavalekhāyā ivābhūjjāṭharo'nalaḥ 9
9. tasyāḥ vipulakāyatvāt durlabhatvāt nijāndhasaḥ
atṛptaḥ arṇavalekhāyāḥ iva abhūt jāṭharaḥ analaḥ
9. tasyāḥ vipulakāyatvāt nijāndhasaḥ durlabhatvāt
atṛptaḥ jāṭharaḥ analaḥ arṇavalekhāyāḥ iva abhūt
9. Due to her enormous body and the difficulty in obtaining her own food, her gastric fire (jāṭharānala) became insatiable, just like the submarine fire (jāṭharānala) within the ocean's expanse.
न कदाचन सा तृप्तिमुपयाता महोदरी ।
वडवानलजिह्वेव चिन्तयामास चैकदा ॥ १० ॥
na kadācana sā tṛptimupayātā mahodarī ,
vaḍavānalajihveva cintayāmāsa caikadā 10
10. na kadācana sā tṛptim upayātā mahodarī |
vaḍavānalajihvā iva cintayāmāsa ca ekadā ||
10. sā mahodarī kadācana tṛptim na upayātā
ekadā ca vaḍavānalajihvā iva cintayāmāsa
10. She, the large-bellied one, was never satisfied. And once, like the tongue of the submarine fire (vaḍavānala), she pondered.
जम्बूद्वीपगतान्सर्वान्निगिरामि जनान्यदि ।
अनारतमनुश्वासं जलराशिमिवार्णवः ॥ ११ ॥
jambūdvīpagatānsarvānnigirāmi janānyadi ,
anāratamanuśvāsaṃ jalarāśimivārṇavaḥ 11
11. jambūdvīpagatān sarvān nigirāmi janān yadi |
anāratam anuśvāsam jalarāśim iva arṇavaḥ ||
11. yadi jambūdvīpagatān sarvān janān nigirāmi
arṇavaḥ iva jalarāśim anāratam anuśvāsam
11. If I were to continuously devour all the people residing on Jambūdvīpa, just as the ocean incessantly inhales (anuśvāsam) a mass of water...
मेघेन मृगतृष्णेव तन्मे क्षुदुपशाम्यति ।
अविरुद्धैव सा युक्तिर्ययापदि हि जीव्यते ॥ १२ ॥
meghena mṛgatṛṣṇeva tanme kṣudupaśāmyati ,
aviruddhaiva sā yuktiryayāpadi hi jīvyate 12
12. meghena mṛgatṛṣṇā iva tat me kṣut upaśāmyati |
aviruddhā eva sā yuktiḥ yayā āpadi hi jīvyate ||
12. meghena mṛgatṛṣṇā iva tat me kṣut upaśāmyati yayā āpadi hi jīvyate,
sā yuktiḥ eva aviruddhā
12. Then my hunger will be appeased, just as a mirage is dispelled by a cloud. That approach (yukti) is certainly not contradictory, for by it one indeed survives in distress.
मन्त्रौषधतपोदानदेवपूजादिरक्षितम् ।
सममेव जनं सर्वं निर्बाधं कः प्रबाधते ॥ १३ ॥
mantrauṣadhatapodānadevapūjādirakṣitam ,
samameva janaṃ sarvaṃ nirbādhaṃ kaḥ prabādhate 13
13. mantrauṣadhatapodānadevapūjādirakṣitam | samam
eva janam sarvam nirbādham kaḥ prabādhate ||
13. kaḥ eva nirbādham mantrauṣadhatapodānadevapūjādirakṣitam
samam sarvam janam prabādhate?
13. Who can, without impediment, obstruct all these people equally, who are protected by incantations (mantra), medicines, asceticism (tapas), charity (dāna), worship of deities, and other such means?
तपः करोमि परममखिन्नेनैव चेतसा ।
तपसैव महोग्रेण यद्दुरापं तदाप्यते ॥ १४ ॥
tapaḥ karomi paramamakhinnenaiva cetasā ,
tapasaiva mahogreṇa yaddurāpaṃ tadāpyate 14
14. tapaḥ karomi paramam akhinnena eva cetasā
tapasā eva mahogreṇa yat durāpam tat āpyate
14. akhinnena eva cetasā paramam tapaḥ karomi
eva mahogreṇa tapasā yat durāpam tat āpyate
14. I perform supreme asceticism (tapas) with an unflagging mind. By means of such extremely severe asceticism (tapas) alone, whatever is difficult to achieve can be obtained.
इति संचिन्त्य सा सर्वजन्तुजातजिघांसया ।
तपोर्थमथ सस्मार पर्वतं भूतदुर्गमम् ॥ १५ ॥
iti saṃcintya sā sarvajantujātajighāṃsayā ,
taporthamatha sasmāra parvataṃ bhūtadurgamam 15
15. iti saṃcintya sā sarvajantujātajighāṃsayā tapaḥ
artham atha sasmāra parvatam bhūtadurgamam
15. iti saṃcintya sā sarvajantujātajighāṃsayā atha
tapaḥ artham bhūtadurgamam parvatam sasmāra
15. Having thus resolved, she, motivated by the desire to kill all living beings, then thought of a mountain that was inaccessible to creatures, for the purpose of asceticism (tapas).
आरुरोह च तच्छृङ्गं स्थिरविद्युद्विलोचना ।
हस्तपादादिमद्देहा श्यामलेवाभ्रमण्डली ॥ १६ ॥
āruroha ca tacchṛṅgaṃ sthiravidyudvilocanā ,
hastapādādimaddehā śyāmalevābhramaṇḍalī 16
16. āruroha ca tat śṛṅgam sthiravidyutvilocanā
hastapādādimaddehā śyāmalā iva abhramaṇḍalī
16. ca sthiravidyutvilocanā hastapādādimaddehā
śyāmalā abhramaṇḍalī iva tat śṛṅgam āruroha
16. And she ascended that peak, her eyes like steady lightning, her body equipped with hands, feet, and other limbs, resembling a dark mass of clouds.
तत्र गत्वाथ सा स्नात्वा तपः कर्तुं कृतस्थितिः ।
अतिष्ठदेकपादेन चन्द्रार्कास्पन्दलोचना ॥ १७ ॥
tatra gatvātha sā snātvā tapaḥ kartuṃ kṛtasthitiḥ ,
atiṣṭhadekapādena candrārkāspandalocanā 17
17. tatra gatvā atha sā snātvā tapaḥ kartum kṛtasthitiḥ
atiṣṭhat ekapādena candrārkāspandalocanā
17. tatra gatvā atha sā snātvā tapaḥ kartum kṛtasthitiḥ
candrārkāspandalocanā ekapādena atiṣṭhat
17. Having gone there, she then bathed, and having resolved to undertake asceticism (tapas), she stood on one foot, her gaze as unwavering as the moon and sun.
क्रमेण दिवसाः पक्षास्तस्या मासर्तवो ययुः ।
शीतातपेषु लीनायाः कृताया इव शैलतः ॥ १८ ॥
krameṇa divasāḥ pakṣāstasyā māsartavo yayuḥ ,
śītātapeṣu līnāyāḥ kṛtāyā iva śailataḥ 18
18. kramena divasāḥ pakṣāḥ tasyāḥ māsa-ṛtavaḥ
yayuḥ śīta-ātapeṣu līṇāyāḥ kṛtāyāḥ iva śailataḥ
18. śīta-ātapeṣu līṇāyāḥ śailataḥ kṛtāyāḥ iva
tasyāḥ kramena divasāḥ pakṣāḥ māsa-ṛtavaḥ yayuḥ
18. Successively, days, fortnights, months, and seasons passed for her, who was absorbed in penance enduring cold and heat, as if she were a statue carved from a rock.
सा बभूवाभ्रमालायाः समासं स्तम्भिताकृतिः ।
कृष्णोर्ध्वगोर्ध्वकेशी च खमाहर्तुमिवोद्गता ॥ १९ ॥
sā babhūvābhramālāyāḥ samāsaṃ stambhitākṛtiḥ ,
kṛṣṇordhvagordhvakeśī ca khamāhartumivodgatā 19
19. sā babhūva abhra-mālāyāḥ samāsam stambhitā-ākṛtiḥ
kṛṣṇa-ūrdhva-ga-ūrdhva-keśī ca kham āhartum iva udgatā
19. sā abhra-mālāyāḥ samāsam stambhitā-ākṛtiḥ
kṛṣṇa-ūrdhva-ga-ūrdhva-keśī ca kham āhartum udgatā iva babhūva
19. She became motionless, like an accumulation of clouds, with dark, upward-standing hair, as if she had risen to grasp the sky.
आलोक्य तां पवनजर्जरिताङ्गकत्वक् चीराङ्गणाकृतिरणत्पवनावधूतैः ।
ऊर्ध्वस्थमूर्धजतमःपटलैर्दधानां तारोघमौक्तिकमजः समुपाजगाम ॥ २० ॥
ālokya tāṃ pavanajarjaritāṅgakatvak cīrāṅgaṇākṛtiraṇatpavanāvadhūtaiḥ ,
ūrdhvasthamūrdhajatamaḥpaṭalairdadhānāṃ tāroghamauktikamajaḥ samupājagāma 20
20. ālokya tām pavana-jarjarita-aṅgaka-tvak
cīra-aṅgaṇā-ākṛtiḥ raṇat-pavana-avadhūtaiḥ
ūrdhvastha-mūrdhaja-tamaḥ-paṭalaiḥ dadhānām
tārā-ogha-mauktikam ajaḥ samupājagāma
20. pavana-jarjarita-aṅgaka-tvak cīra-aṅgaṇā-ākṛtiḥ
raṇat-pavana-avadhūtaiḥ
ūrdhvastha-mūrdhaja-tamaḥ-paṭalaiḥ tārā-ogha-mauktikam
dadhānām tām ālokya ajaḥ samupājagāma
20. Having seen her, whose body and skin were weathered by the wind, appearing like a woman clad in tattered garments, and whose masses of dark, upward-standing hair, stirred by the roaring wind, held a pearl-like multitude of stars, the Unborn One (Brahma) approached.
