मन्दरे मृदुमन्दारमन्दिरे मन्दराभिधाम् ।
आलिंग्याऽप्सरसं सुप्तं सरित्तृणमिवानयत् ॥ १ ॥

1. saḥ mandare mṛdumandāramandire mandarābhidhām suptaṃ apsarasaṃ āliṅgya sarittṛṇam iva ānayat.
1. In an abode adorned with soft Mandara flowers on Mount Mandara, he embraced the sleeping Apsara named Mandarā and then carried her away as easily as one carries a river-reed.
मामथासौ मया पृष्टा समाश्वास्य जलाकुला ।
बाले किमिदमित्युक्तं तया चपलनेत्रया ॥ २ ॥
māmathāsau mayā pṛṣṭā samāśvāsya jalākulā ,
bāle kimidamityuktaṃ tayā capalanetrayā 2
2. mām atha asau mayā pṛṣṭā samāśvāsya jalākulā
bāle kim idam iti uktam tayā capalanetrayā
2. atha mayā pṛṣṭā asau jalākulā samāśvāsya
tayā capalanetrayā bāle kim idam iti uktam
2. Then, when I asked her, she, tearful and having composed herself, with her restless eyes, said, 'O girl, what is this?'
इह चन्द्रोदयेष्वेताश्चन्द्रकान्तकटप्रजाः ।
नद्यो माद्यन्ति वनिताः सेष्टा इव निशागमे ॥ ३ ॥
iha candrodayeṣvetāścandrakāntakaṭaprajāḥ ,
nadyo mādyanti vanitāḥ seṣṭā iva niśāgame 3
3. iha candrodhayeṣu etāḥ candrakānta-kaṭaprajāḥ
nadyaḥ mādyanti vanitāḥ seṣṭāḥ iva niśāgame
3. iha candrodhayeṣu etāḥ candrakānta-kaṭaprajāḥ
nadyaḥ niśāgame seṣṭāḥ vanitāḥ iva mādyanti
3. Here, during the moonrises, these rivers, whose streams flow from moonstones, swell like women who, accompanied by their beloveds, become exhilarated at the arrival of night.
त्वत्संगमरसावेशवशात्तन्ननु विस्मृतम् ।
इत्युक्त्वा मामुपादाय सोड्डीना विहगीव खम् ॥ ४ ॥
tvatsaṃgamarasāveśavaśāttannanu vismṛtam ,
ityuktvā māmupādāya soḍḍīnā vihagīva kham 4
4. tvat-saṅgamarasa-āveśa-vaśāt tat nanu vismṛtam
iti uktvā mām upādāya sā uḍḍīnā vihagī iva kham
4. nanu tvat-saṅgamarasa-āveśa-vaśāt tat vismṛtam iti uktvā,
sā mām upādāya vihagī iva kham uḍḍīnā
4. Indeed, 'That was forgotten due to the intoxication of the joy (rasa) of union with you.' Having said this, and taking me, she flew up into the sky like a female bird.
भृङ्गं श्रृङ्गवतः श्रृङ्गे गङ्गाकनकपङ्कजे ।
अहमासं समाः सप्त तत्क्लिन्नोऽकर्दमाप्लुते ॥ ५ ॥
bhṛṅgaṃ śrṛṅgavataḥ śrṛṅge gaṅgākanakapaṅkaje ,
ahamāsaṃ samāḥ sapta tatklinno'kardamāplute 5
5. bhṛṅgam śṛṅgavataḥ śṛṅge gaṅgā-kanaka-paṅkaje
aham āsam samāḥ sapta tat-klinnaḥ akardamāplute
5. aham śṛṅgavataḥ śṛṅge gaṅgā-kanaka-paṅkaje
akardamāplute tat-klinnaḥ bhṛṅgam samāḥ sapta āsam
5. For seven years, I was a bee on the peak of a mountain, in a golden lotus of the Ganga, soaked by its pure, un-muddied waters.
अन्यन्मया जगद्दृष्टमृक्षचक्रविवर्जितम् ।
गर्भगर्भस्थैकजातिस्वप्रकाशजनावृतम् ॥ ६ ॥
anyanmayā jagaddṛṣṭamṛkṣacakravivarjitam ,
garbhagarbhasthaikajātisvaprakāśajanāvṛtam 6
6. anyat mayā jagat dṛṣṭam ṛkṣacakravivarjitam
garbha-garbha-sthaika-jāti-svaprakāśa-janāvṛtam
6. mayā anyat jagat ṛkṣacakravivarjitam
garbha-garbha-sthaika-jāti-svaprakāśa-janāvṛtam dṛṣṭam
6. I saw another world, devoid of the stellar constellations, enveloped by beings whose singular intrinsic nature (dharma) was self-luminous, residing deep within the core of existence.
न दिग्विभागो न दिनानि यत्र न चैव शास्त्राणि न वेदवादाः ।
न चैव दैत्यादिसुरादिभेदो जगन्मया तादृगथात्मदीप्तम् ॥ ७ ॥
na digvibhāgo na dināni yatra na caiva śāstrāṇi na vedavādāḥ ,
na caiva daityādisurādibhedo jaganmayā tādṛgathātmadīptam 7
7. na digvibhāgaḥ na dināni yatra na
ca eva śāstrāṇi na vedavādāḥ na
ca eva daityādi-surādi-bhedaḥ
jagat mayā tādṛk atha ātmadīptam
7. yatra digvibhāgaḥ na,
dināni na,
śāstrāṇi ca eva na,
vedavādāḥ na,
daityādi-surādi-bhedaḥ ca eva na,
mayā tādṛk ātmadīptam jagat atha
7. Where there were no cardinal directions, no days, no scriptures, nor any Vedic doctrines; nor indeed any distinctions like those between demons (daitya) and gods (sura) – such a world, inherently self-luminous, was seen by me.
विद्याधरामरविहारविमानभूमावभ्रंलिहाचलनितम्बकदम्बकच्छे ।
आसं समाः समरसोऽमरसोमनामा सप्तान्यसप्त ससमुद्रतटे तपस्वी ॥ ८ ॥
vidyādharāmaravihāravimānabhūmāvabhraṃlihācalanitambakadambakacche ,
āsaṃ samāḥ samaraso'marasomanāmā saptānyasapta sasamudrataṭe tapasvī 8
8. vidyādharāmaravihāravimānabhūmau
abhraṃlihācalanitambakadambakacche āsam
samāḥ samarasah amarasomanāmā saptan
anya sapta sa-samudra-taṭe tapasvī
8. amarasomanāmā samarasah tapasvī saptan

sa-samudra-taṭe āsam
8. I, an ascetic named Amarasoma, remaining tranquil (samarasa), resided for fourteen years in a region graced by the pleasure-airships of the Vidyādharas and immortals, amidst thickets formed by clusters of cloud-scraping mountain slopes, and by the seashore.
पवनवहनसंनिवेशनानासुहयपयोधरदेहकैरनेकैः ।
गजहरिणमृगेन्द्रवृक्षवल्लीमृगनगपन्नगपक्षिभिः परीतम् ॥ ९ ॥
pavanavahanasaṃniveśanānāsuhayapayodharadehakairanekaiḥ ,
gajahariṇamṛgendravṛkṣavallīmṛganagapannagapakṣibhiḥ parītam 9

9. That world was encompassed by many varied forms - including those associated with the arrangement of wind-flow, diverse good horses, and clouds - as well as by elephants, deer, lions, trees, creepers, wild animals, mountains, serpents, and birds.
गगनमवनितः समेत्य वह्नेर्वरविभवेन जगत्यनन्तकोशम् ।
क्वचिदहमभितो दिदृक्षुरग्रे सृत उरगाशनवद्वलादविद्याम् ॥ १० ॥
gaganamavanitaḥ sametya vahnervaravibhavena jagatyanantakośam ,
kvacidahamabhito didṛkṣuragre sṛta uragāśanavadvalādavidyām 10
10. gaganam avanitaḥ sametya vahneḥ
varavibhavena jagati anantakośam
kvacit aham abhitaḥ didṛkṣuḥ agre
sṛtaḥ uragāśanavat balāt avidyām
10. kvacit aham avanitaḥ gaganam
sametya vahneḥ varavibhavena jagati
anantakośam agre sṛtaḥ abhitaḥ
didṛkṣuḥ uragāśanavat balāt avidyām
10. Having risen from the earth and merged with the sky, by the excellent splendor of fire, I moved forward into the world (jagati), which has infinite layers. Somewhere, desiring to perceive all around, I forcibly advanced towards ignorance, like [the mythical bird] Garuda.
क्वचिदहं जगतः परिनिर्गतः पतित एकमहार्णवविस्तृते ।
नभसि तत्र निवासिनिभे सितः समयमन्वभवं पतनं तथा ॥ ११ ॥
kvacidahaṃ jagataḥ parinirgataḥ patita ekamahārṇavavistṛte ,
nabhasi tatra nivāsinibhe sitaḥ samayamanvabhavaṃ patanaṃ tathā 11
11. kvacit aham jagataḥ parinirgataḥ
patitaḥ eka mahā arṇava vistṛte
nabhasi tatra nivāsinibhe sitaḥ
samayam anvabhavam patanam tathā
11. kvacit aham jagataḥ parinirgataḥ
eka mahā arṇava vistṛte nabhasi
patitaḥ tatra nivāsinibhe sitaḥ
tathā samayam patanam ca anvabhavam
11. Somewhere, having departed from the world, I fell into the sky, which was like the vast expanse of a single great ocean. There, fixed like an inhabitant, I experienced time and this very falling.
आकाशकोशपतनानुभवैकवृत्तेः श्रान्तस्य मे पदमकार्यथ निद्रयान्तः ।
तादृक्सुषुप्तवपुषाथ मयोपलब्धं स्वप्नात्मजाग्रति तदात्मनि तत्र विश्वम् ॥ १२ ॥
ākāśakośapatanānubhavaikavṛtteḥ śrāntasya me padamakāryatha nidrayāntaḥ ,
tādṛksuṣuptavapuṣātha mayopalabdhaṃ svapnātmajāgrati tadātmani tatra viśvam 12
12. ākāśakośapatanānubhavaikavṛtteḥ śrāntasya
me padam akāri atha nidrayā antaḥ
tādṛksuṣuptavapuṣā atha mayā upalabdham
svapnātmajāgrati tadātmani tatra viśvam
12. ākāśakośapatanānubhavaikavṛtteḥ śrāntasya
me nidrayā antaḥ padam akāri atha
tādṛksuṣuptavapuṣā mayā tatra tadātmani
svapnātmajāgrati viśvam upalabdham atha
12. For me, exhausted from being solely absorbed in the experience of falling into the cosmic sheath of the sky, a place [of rest] was then created within by sleep. Then, with my body resembling one in deep sleep, the entire universe (viśva) was perceived by me, within that Self (ātman), in a waking state that was like a dream.
भूयो दिगन्तभुवनामरमन्दराद्रिसंसारचञ्चलतया लतयेव पक्षी ।
अक्षीणवातबलया परिचाल्यमानस्तन्मासु तासु पतितो हि जगद्गुहासु ॥ १३ ॥
bhūyo digantabhuvanāmaramandarādrisaṃsāracañcalatayā latayeva pakṣī ,
akṣīṇavātabalayā paricālyamānastanmāsu tāsu patito hi jagadguhāsu 13
13. bhūyaḥ digantabhuvanāmaramandaraādrisaṃsāracañcalatayā
latayā iva
pakṣī akṣīṇavātabalayā paricālyamānaḥ
tanmāsu tāsu patitaḥ hi jagatguhāsu
13. bhūyaḥ aham (implied) akṣīṇavātabalayā
latayā iva pakṣī
digantabhuvanāmaramandaraādrisaṃsāracañcalatayā paricālyamānaḥ
hi tanmāsu tāsu jagatguhāsu patitaḥ
13. Again, like a bird (pakṣī) on a creeper, I was driven around by an unceasing force of wind. This occurred due to the restlessness of the cycle of existence (saṃsāra), which is as mighty and tumultuous as the Mandara mountain in the divine realms at the farthest reaches of the universe. Indeed, I fell into those very caves of the world.
विषयाशा दृशो यावत्तावद्यातः क्षणादहम् ।
पुनस्तथैव पश्यंस्तु दृश्यं यातः पुनःपुनः ॥ १४ ॥
viṣayāśā dṛśo yāvattāvadyātaḥ kṣaṇādaham ,
punastathaiva paśyaṃstu dṛśyaṃ yātaḥ punaḥpunaḥ 14
14. viṣayāśā dṛśaḥ yāvattāvat yātaḥ kṣaṇāt aham
punaḥ tathā eva paśyan tu dṛśyam yātaḥ punaḥpunaḥ
14. aham yāvat dṛśaḥ viṣayāśā tāvat kṣaṇāt yātaḥ
punaḥ tathā eva dṛśyam paśyan tu punaḥpunaḥ yātaḥ
14. As long as the desire for sense objects (viṣayāśā) was present in my sight, I was instantly drawn away by it. Then, seeing those very objects (dṛśyam) again and again in the same manner, I repeatedly pursued them.
इति दृश्यमदृश्यं च गम्यं चागम्यमेव च ।
वेगाल्लङ्घयतो देशं मम वर्षगणा गताः ॥ १५ ॥
iti dṛśyamadṛśyaṃ ca gamyaṃ cāgamyameva ca ,
vegāllaṅghayato deśaṃ mama varṣagaṇā gatāḥ 15
15. iti dṛśyam adṛśyam ca gamyam ca agamyam eva ca
vegāt laṅghayataḥ deśam mama varṣagaṇāḥ gatāḥ
15. mama varṣagaṇāḥ iti dṛśyam adṛśyam ca gamyam ca
agamyam eva ca deśam vegāt laṅghayataḥ gatāḥ
15. Thus, while I rapidly transcended the seen (dṛśyam) and the unseen, the attainable and the unattainable, and even space, my many years (varṣagaṇāḥ) passed by.
दृश्याख्याया अविद्याया न त्वन्तं प्राप्तवानहम् ।
मिथ्यैव हृदि रूढायाः पिशाच्या इव बालकः ॥ १६ ॥
dṛśyākhyāyā avidyāyā na tvantaṃ prāptavānaham ,
mithyaiva hṛdi rūḍhāyāḥ piśācyā iva bālakaḥ 16
16. dṛśyākhyāyāḥ avidyāyāḥ na tu antam prāptavān aham
mithyā eva hṛdi rūḍhāyāḥ piśācyāḥ iva bālakaḥ
16. aham tu dṛśyākhyāyāḥ avidyāyāḥ na antam prāptavān,
bālakaḥ iva हृदि मिथ्या eva rūḍhāyāḥ piśācyāḥ [antaṃ na prāptavān]
16. Indeed, I, like a child (bālakaḥ) facing a female demon (piśācī), have not reached the end of that ignorance (avidyā), called 'the seen' (dṛśya), which is falsely rooted in my heart.
नेदं नेदं सदित्येव विचारानुभवे स्थितम् ।
तथापीदमिदं चेति दुर्दृष्टिर्न निवर्तते ॥ १७ ॥
nedaṃ nedaṃ sadityeva vicārānubhave sthitam ,
tathāpīdamidaṃ ceti durdṛṣṭirna nivartate 17
17. na idam na idam sat iti eva vicārānubhave sthitam
tathāpi idam idam ca iti durdṛṣṭiḥ na nivartate
17. na idam na idam sat iti eva vicārānubhave sthitam
tathāpi idam idam ca iti durdṛṣṭiḥ na nivartate
17. Even though it is established through intellectual discrimination and experience (vicārānubhave) that 'this is not the true Being (sat), this is not the true Being (sat)' (referring to the phenomenal world), still, the erroneous perception (durdṛṣṭiḥ) that asserts 'this is this' does not cease.
प्रतिक्षणं सुखैर्दुःखैर्देशकालैः समागमैः ।
सरिद्वारिवदालोला नवमायान्ति यान्ति च ॥ १८ ॥
pratikṣaṇaṃ sukhairduḥkhairdeśakālaiḥ samāgamaiḥ ,
saridvārivadālolā navamāyānti yānti ca 18
18. pratīkṣaṇam sukhaiḥ duḥkhaiḥ deśakālaiḥ samāgamaiḥ
saritvārivadālolāḥ navāḥ āyānti yānti ca
18. navāḥ saritvārivadālolāḥ (experiences) pratīkṣaṇam sukhaiḥ duḥkhaiḥ deśakālaiḥ samāgamaiḥ ca āyānti yānti.
18. Moment by moment, new experiences, restless like river water, constantly arrive and depart, influenced by pleasures, pains, specific places and times, and various associations.
तालीतमालबकुलातुलतुङ्गश्रृङ्गमुन्नादवातजवमेकमहं स्मरामि ।
सूर्यादिभिर्विरहितं प्रकटं स्वकान्त्या सस्थावराद्रितटजङ्गममेव विश्वम् ॥ १९ ॥
tālītamālabakulātulatuṅgaśrṛṅgamunnādavātajavamekamahaṃ smarāmi ,
sūryādibhirvirahitaṃ prakaṭaṃ svakāntyā sasthāvarādritaṭajaṅgamameva viśvam 19
19. tālı̄tamālabakulātulatuṅgaśṛṅgam
unnādavātajavam ekam aham smarāmi
sūryādibhiḥ virahitam prakaṭam svakāntyā
sasthāvarādritaṭajaṅgamam eva viśvam
19. aham ekam viśvam smarāmi.
(Tat) tālı̄tamālabakulātulatuṅgaśṛṅgam,
unnādavātajavam,
sūryādibhiḥ virahitam,
svakāntyā prakaṭam,
sasthāvarādritaṭajaṅgamam eva.
19. I remember a singular universe, with unsurpassed lofty formations like tālı̄, tamāla, and bakula trees, possessing the roar and speed of the wind. Devoid of the sun and other celestial bodies, it shone forth with its own radiance, encompassing all that is stationary – like mountains and shores – as well as all that moves.
यदेतदेकान्तविहारहारि स्वच्छन्दमेकामितमस्तशङ्कम् ।
क्वचिन्मया चारुजगत्सु दृष्टं तुल्या न तस्यामरराजलक्ष्मीः ॥ २० ॥
yadetadekāntavihārahāri svacchandamekāmitamastaśaṅkam ,
kvacinmayā cārujagatsu dṛṣṭaṃ tulyā na tasyāmararājalakṣmīḥ 20
20. yat etat ekāntavihārahāri svacchandam ekāmitam astaśaṅkam
kvacit mayā cārujagatsu dṛṣṭam tulyā na tasya amararājalakṣmīḥ
20. kvacit cārujagatsu mayā yat etat ekāntavihārahāri,
svacchandam,
ekāmitam,
astaśaṅkam dṛṣṭam,
tasya amararājalakṣmīḥ tulyā na.
20. That which I once saw in beautiful worlds - a place charming for solitary pleasure, completely free, peerless, and fearless - even the opulence of the king of gods (amararājalakṣmī) is not comparable to it.
