श्रीराम उवाच ।
मुधैवाभ्युत्थितो मोहान्मुधैव परिवर्धते ।
मिथ्यामयेन भीतोऽस्मि दुरहंकारशत्रुणा ॥ १ ॥
śrīrāma uvāca ,
mudhaivābhyutthito mohānmudhaiva parivardhate ,
mithyāmayena bhīto'smi durahaṃkāraśatruṇā 1
1. śrīrāma uvāca | mudhā eva
abhyutthitaḥ mohāt mudhā eva
parivardhate | mithyāmayena bhītaḥ
asmi durahaṅkāraśatruṇā || 1 ||
1. Śrī Rāma said: "It has risen fruitlessly from delusion, and it grows fruitlessly. I am truly terrified by this illusory, evil enemy, ego (ahaṅkāra)."
अहंकारवशादेव दोषकोशकदर्थताम् ।
ददाति दीनदीनानां संसारो विविधाकृतिः ॥ २ ॥
ahaṃkāravaśādeva doṣakośakadarthatām ,
dadāti dīnadīnānāṃ saṃsāro vividhākṛtiḥ 2
2. ahaṅkāravaśāt eva doṣakośakadarthatām | dadāti
dīnadīnānām saṃsāraḥ vividhākṛtiḥ || 2 ||
2. Because of ego (ahaṅkāra) alone, this cycle of rebirth (saṃsāra), which assumes diverse forms, brings forth a multitude of faults and degradation upon the most wretched of the distressed.
अहंकारवशादापदहंकाराहुराधयः ।
अहंकारवशादीहा त्वहंकारो ममामयः ॥ ३ ॥
ahaṃkāravaśādāpadahaṃkārāhurādhayaḥ ,
ahaṃkāravaśādīhā tvahaṃkāro mamāmayaḥ 3
3. ahaṅkāravaśāt āpadaḥ ahaṅkārāt āhuḥ ādhayaḥ |
ahaṅkāravaśāt īhā tu ahaṅkāraḥ mama āmayaḥ || 3 ||
3. From ego (ahaṅkāra) come calamities; from ego (ahaṅkāra), they say, come mental anxieties. From ego (ahaṅkāra) springs desire, and truly, ego (ahaṅkāra) is my very disease.
तमहंकारमाश्रित्य परमं चिरवैरिणम् ।
न भुजे न पिबाम्यम्भः किमु भोगान्भुजे मुने ॥ ४ ॥
tamahaṃkāramāśritya paramaṃ ciravairiṇam ,
na bhuje na pibāmyambhaḥ kimu bhogānbhuje mune 4
4. tam ahaṅkāram āśritya paramam ciravairiṇam | na
bhuje na pibāmi ambhaḥ kimu bhogān bhuje mune || 4 ||
4. Having embraced that ego (ahaṅkāra), my ultimate and long-standing enemy, I neither eat nor drink water. How then, O sage, can I enjoy worldly pleasures?
संसाररजनी दीर्घा माया मनसि मोहिनी ।
ततोऽहंकारदोषेण किरातेनेव वागुरा ॥ ५ ॥
saṃsārarajanī dīrghā māyā manasi mohinī ,
tato'haṃkāradoṣeṇa kirāteneva vāgurā 5
5. saṃsārarajanī dīrghā māyā manasi mohinī
tataḥ ahaṅkāradoṣeṇa kirātena iva vāgurā
5. The night of transmigration (saṃsāra) is long, and the illusion (māyā) in the mind is deluding. Thereby, due to the fault of ego (ahaṅkāra), it becomes a snare, just like a net set by a hunter.
यानि दुःखानि दीर्घाणि विषमाणि महान्ति च ।
अहंकारात्प्रसूतानि तान्यगात्खदिरा इव ॥ ६ ॥
yāni duḥkhāni dīrghāṇi viṣamāṇi mahānti ca ,
ahaṃkārātprasūtāni tānyagātkhadirā iva 6
6. yāni duḥkhāni dīrghāṇi viṣamāṇi mahānti ca
ahaṅkārāt prasūtāni tāni agāt khadirāḥ iva
6. All those long, severe, and great sufferings, which are born from ego (ahaṅkāra), become as firmly rooted as Khadira trees.
शमेन्दुसैंहिकेयास्यं गुणपद्महिमाशनिम् ।
साम्यमेघशरत्कालमहंकारं त्यजाम्यहम् ॥ ७ ॥
śamendusaiṃhikeyāsyaṃ guṇapadmahimāśanim ,
sāmyameghaśaratkālamahaṃkāraṃ tyajāmyaham 7
7. śamendu-saiṃhikeyāsyam guṇapadma-himāśanim
sāmyamegha-śaratkālam ahaṅkāram tyajāmi aham
7. I abandon the ego (ahaṅkāra) which is like Rāhu's mouth to the moon of tranquility (śama), a destructive hailstorm to the lotus of virtues, and the autumn season to the cloud of equanimity (sāmya).
नाहं रामो न मे वाञ्छा भावेषु न च मे मनः ।
शान्त आसितुमिच्छामि स्वात्मनीव जिनो यथा ॥ ८ ॥
nāhaṃ rāmo na me vāñchā bhāveṣu na ca me manaḥ ,
śānta āsitumicchāmi svātmanīva jino yathā 8
8. na aham rāmaḥ na me vāñchā bhāveṣu na ca me manaḥ
śāntaḥ āsitum icchāmi svātmani iva jinaḥ yathā
8. I am not Rāma, nor do I have any desire for worldly existences. My mind also has no such inclination. I desire to remain peaceful within my own self (ātman), just as a Jina (victor) does.
अहंकारवशाद्यद्यन्मया भुक्तं हुतं कृतम् ।
सर्वं तत्तदवस्त्वेव वस्त्वहंकाररिक्तता ॥ ९ ॥
ahaṃkāravaśādyadyanmayā bhuktaṃ hutaṃ kṛtam ,
sarvaṃ tattadavastveva vastvahaṃkārariktatā 9
9. ahaṅkāravaśāt yat yat mayā bhuktaṃ hutaṃ kṛtam |
sarvaṃ tat tat avastu eva vastu ahaṅkārariktatā ||
9. Whatever I have experienced, offered as oblation, or performed under the sway of ego (ahaṅkāra) – all of that is ultimately unreal. The true reality lies in the absence of ego (ahaṅkāra).
अहमित्यस्ति चेद्ब्रह्मन्नहमापदि दुःखितः ।
नास्ति चेत्सुखितस्तस्मादनहंकारिता वरम् ॥ १० ॥
ahamityasti cedbrahmannahamāpadi duḥkhitaḥ ,
nāsti cetsukhitastasmādanahaṃkāritā varam 10
10. aham iti asti cet brahman aham āpadi duḥkhitaḥ |
na asti cet sukhitaḥ tasmāt anahaṅkāritā varam ||
10. O Brahmin, if the ego (ahaṅkāra) exists, then I am distressed in adversity. If it does not exist, then I am happy. Therefore, the absence of ego (ahaṅkāra) is superior.
अहंकारं परित्यज्य मुने शान्तमनस्तया ।
अवतिष्ठे गतोद्वेगो भोगौघो भङ्गुरास्पदः ॥ ११ ॥
ahaṃkāraṃ parityajya mune śāntamanastayā ,
avatiṣṭhe gatodvego bhogaugho bhaṅgurāspadaḥ 11
11. ahaṅkāraṃ parityajya mune śāntamanastayā |
avatiṣṭhe gatodvegaḥ bhogaughaḥ bhaṅgurāspadaḥ ||
11. O sage, having relinquished ego (ahaṅkāra), I remain with a tranquil mind, free from agitation. The torrent of worldly pleasures is based on a perishable foundation.
ब्रह्मन्यावदहंकारवारिदः परिजृम्भते ।
तावद्विकासमायाति तृष्णाकुटजमञ्जरी ॥ १२ ॥
brahmanyāvadahaṃkāravāridaḥ parijṛmbhate ,
tāvadvikāsamāyāti tṛṣṇākuṭajamañjarī 12
12. brahman yāvat ahaṅkāravāridaḥ parijṛmbhate
| tāvat vikāsam āyāti tṛṣṇākuṭajamañjarī ||
12. O Brahmin, as long as the cloud of ego (ahaṅkāra) expands, so long does the cluster of Kuṭaja flowers, representing desire (tṛṣṇā), blossom forth.
अहंकारघने शान्ते तृष्णा नवतडिल्लता ।
शान्तदीपशिखावृत्त्या क्वापि यात्यतिसत्वरम् ॥ १३ ॥
ahaṃkāraghane śānte tṛṣṇā navataḍillatā ,
śāntadīpaśikhāvṛttyā kvāpi yātyatisatvaram 13
13. ahaṅkāra-ghane śānte tṛṣṇā navataḍillatā
śāntadīpaśikhāvṛttyā kva api yāti atisatvaram
13. Even when the dense ego (ahaṅkāra) is quiescent, craving (tṛṣṇā), like a fresh lightning creeper, vanishes somewhere very swiftly, just as a lamp flame does when it has been extinguished.
अहंकारमहाविन्ध्ये मनोमत्तमहागजः ।
विस्फूर्जति घनास्फोटैः स्तनितैरिव वारिदः ॥ १४ ॥
ahaṃkāramahāvindhye manomattamahāgajaḥ ,
visphūrjati ghanāsphoṭaiḥ stanitairiva vāridaḥ 14
14. ahaṅkāramahāvindhye manomattamahāgajaḥ
visphūrjati ghanāsphoṭaiḥ stanitaiḥ iva vāridaḥ
14. In the vast Vindhya mountain of ego (ahaṅkāra), the mind, like a maddened great elephant, bellows with mighty roars, just as a thundercloud rumbles with its thunders.
इह देहमहारण्ये घनाहंकारकेसरी ।
योऽयमुल्लसति स्फारस्तेनेदं जगदाततम् ॥ १५ ॥
iha dehamahāraṇye ghanāhaṃkārakesarī ,
yo'yamullasati sphārastenedaṃ jagadātatam 15
15. iha dehamahāraṇye ghanāhaṅkāra-kesarī yaḥ
ayam ullasati sphāraḥ tena idam jagat ātatam
15. Here, in this great forest of the body, this expansive, dense lion of ego (ahaṅkāra) thrives, and by it this entire world is pervaded.
तृष्णातन्तुलवप्रोता बहुजन्मपरम्परा ।
अहंकारोग्रखिङ्गेन कण्ठे मुक्तावली कृता ॥ १६ ॥
tṛṣṇātantulavaprotā bahujanmaparamparā ,
ahaṃkārograkhiṅgena kaṇṭhe muktāvalī kṛtā 16
16. tṛṣṇātantulavaprotā bahujanmaparamparā
ahaṅkārograkhiṅgena kaṇṭhe muktāvalī kṛtā
16. The long succession of many births (saṃsāra), strung piece by piece like pearls on threads of craving (tṛṣṇā), has been fashioned into a necklace of pearls around the neck by the fierce demon of ego (ahaṅkāra).
पुत्रमित्रकलत्रादितन्त्रमन्त्रविवर्जितम् ।
प्रसारितमनेनेह मुनेऽहंकारवैरिणा ॥ १७ ॥
putramitrakalatrāditantramantravivarjitam ,
prasāritamaneneha mune'haṃkāravairiṇā 17
17. putramitrakalatrāditantramantravivarjitam
prasāritam anena iha mune ahaṅkāravairiṇā
17. O sage, this enemy, the ego (ahaṅkāra), has spread here [a condition] that is devoid of the doctrines and sacred utterances related to sons, friends, wives, and so forth.
प्रमार्जितेऽहमित्यस्मिन्पदे स्वयमपि द्रुतम् ।
प्रमार्जिता भवन्त्येते सर्व एव दुराधयः ॥ १८ ॥
pramārjite'hamityasminpade svayamapi drutam ,
pramārjitā bhavantyete sarva eva durādhayaḥ 18
18. pramārjite aham iti asmin pade svayam api drutam
pramārjitā bhavanti ete sarve eva durādhayaḥ
18. When this 'I' (aham) consciousness is completely eliminated, then swiftly, all these evil intentions are also automatically wiped away.
अहमित्यम्बुदे शान्ते शनैश्च शमशातिनी ।
मनोगगनसंमोहमिहिका क्वापि गच्छति ॥ १९ ॥
ahamityambude śānte śanaiśca śamaśātinī ,
manogaganasaṃmohamihikā kvāpi gacchati 19
19. aham iti ambude śānte śanaiḥ ca śamaśātinī
manogaganasaṃmohamihikā kva api gacchati
19. When the 'I' (aham) consciousness, like a cloud, is calmed, then slowly, the mist of mental confusion in the sky of the mind, which destroys tranquility, vanishes somewhere.
निरहंकारवृत्तेर्मे मौर्ख्याच्छोकेन सीदतः ।
यत्किंचिदुचितं ब्रह्मंस्तदाख्यातुमिहार्हसि ॥ २० ॥
nirahaṃkāravṛtterme maurkhyācchokena sīdataḥ ,
yatkiṃciducitaṃ brahmaṃstadākhyātumihārhasi 20
20. nirahaṅkāravṛtteḥ me maurkkyāt śokena sīdataḥ
yat kiñcit ucitam brahman tat ākhyātum iha arhasi
20. O Brahman, for me, who am of a non-egoic disposition, but am sinking due to foolishness and sorrow, please tell me whatever is appropriate here.
सर्वापदां निलयमध्रुवमन्तरस्थमुन्मुक्तमुत्तमगुणेन न संश्रयामि ।
यत्नादहंकृतिपदं परितोऽतिदुःखं शेषेण मां समनुशाधि महानुभाव ॥ २१ ॥
sarvāpadāṃ nilayamadhruvamantarasthamunmuktamuttamaguṇena na saṃśrayāmi ,
yatnādahaṃkṛtipadaṃ parito'tiduḥkhaṃ śeṣeṇa māṃ samanuśādhi mahānubhāva 21
21. sarvāpadām nilayam adhruvam antarastham
unmuktam uttamaguṇena na saṃśrayāmi |
yatnāt ahaṃkṛti-padam paritaḥ ati-duḥkham
śeṣeṇa mām samanuśādhi mahānubhāva || 21 ||
21. O glorious one (mahānubhāva), I do not take refuge in that impermanent inner dwelling, the abode of all calamities, which is devoid of excellent qualities. Therefore, please carefully instruct me fully concerning this state of ego (ahaṅkṛti) which is encompassed by extreme suffering.
