मथुरानगरीं चन्द्रसूर्याविन्द्रपुरीमिव ॥ १ ॥

1. Kundadanta said: "With joyful appearances, those two set out to go towards their dwelling, the city of Mathura, just as the moon and the sun would proceed towards Indra's city."
प्राप्य रोधाभिधं ग्रामं विश्रम्याम्रवणाचले ।
उषितौ द्वे दिने तस्मिन्सालीसे नगरे सुखम् ॥ २ ॥

2. Having reached the village named Rodha, and rested on the Amravanachal hill, we comfortably stayed for two days in that city of Salisa.
अध्वानन्दितचित्ताभ्यामावाभ्यामतिवाहितः ।
द्वितीयेऽहनि शीताम्बुस्निग्धच्छायावनद्रुमाः ॥ ३ ॥
adhvānanditacittābhyāmāvābhyāmativāhitaḥ ,
dvitīye'hani śītāmbusnigdhacchāyāvanadrumāḥ 3

3. On the second day, which was spent by us two whose minds were gladdened by the journey, [there were] forest trees offering cool waters and dense shade,
नदीतीरलतोन्मुक्तपुष्पप्रकरपाण्डुराः ।
तरत्तरङ्गझांकारगायनानन्दिताध्वगाः ॥ ४ ॥

4. [These trees were] pale with masses of flowers fallen from riverbank creepers, and whose travelers were delighted by the melodious sound of splashing waves.
जङ्गलाद्रिपुरग्रामश्वभ्रानूपस्थलावनीः ।
समुल्लङ्घ्य दिने तस्मिन्सरित्स्रोतः सरांसि च ॥ ६ ॥
jaṅgalādripuragrāmaśvabhrānūpasthalāvanīḥ ,
samullaṅghya dine tasminsaritsrotaḥ sarāṃsi ca 6

6. On that day, having traversed forests, mountains, cities, villages, ravines, wetlands, plains, and various lands, as well as river currents and lakes, [we continued our journey].
नीतवन्तौ निशामावां कदलीकानने घने ।
तुषारशिशिरे श्रान्तौ कदलीदलतल्पके ॥ ७ ॥
nītavantau niśāmāvāṃ kadalīkānane ghane ,
tuṣāraśiśire śrāntau kadalīdalatalpake 7
7. nītavantau niśām āvām kadalīkānane ghane

7. We two, tired and chilled by the frost, spent the night in a dense banana grove, on a bed made of banana leaves.
प्राप्तावावां तृतीयेऽह्नि षण्डषण्डकमण्डितम् ।
जङ्गलं जनविच्छेदविभक्तं खमिवाकृतम् ॥ ८ ॥
prāptāvāvāṃ tṛtīye'hni ṣaṇḍaṣaṇḍakamaṇḍitam ,
jaṅgalaṃ janavicchedavibhaktaṃ khamivākṛtam 8
8. prāptau āvām tṛtīye ahni ṣaṇḍaṣaṇḍakamaṇḍitam
jaṅgalam janavicchedavibhaktam kham iva ākṛtam
8. tṛtīye ahni āvām ṣaṇḍaṣaṇḍakamaṇḍitam

8. On the third day, we two reached a jungle, adorned with many groves and vast like the sky, separated from human habitation.
तत्र स प्रकृतं मार्ग परित्यज्य वनान्तरम् ।
प्रविशन्समुवाचेदमकार्यकरणं वचः ॥ ९ ॥
tatra sa prakṛtaṃ mārga parityajya vanāntaram ,
praviśansamuvācedamakāryakaraṇaṃ vacaḥ 9
9. tatra sa prakṛtam mārgam parityajya vanāntaram
praviśan samuvāca idam akāryakaraṇam vacaḥ
9. tatra sa prakṛtam mārgam parityajya vanāntaram
praviśan idam akāryakaraṇam vacaḥ samuvāca
9. There, abandoning the usual path and entering another part of the forest, he spoke these words, which constituted an improper act.
गच्छावोऽत्राश्रभे गौर्या मुनिमण्डलमण्डिते ।
भ्रातरो मे स्थिताः सप्त वनेष्वेवमिवार्थिनः ॥ १० ॥
gacchāvo'trāśrabhe gauryā munimaṇḍalamaṇḍite ,
bhrātaro me sthitāḥ sapta vaneṣvevamivārthinaḥ 10
10. gacchāvaḥ atra āśrame gauryā munimaṇḍalamaṇḍite
bhrātaraḥ me sthitāḥ sapta vaneṣu evam iva arthinaḥ
10. atra gauryā munimaṇḍalamaṇḍite āśrame gacchāvaḥ me
sapta bhrātaraḥ vaneṣu evam iva arthinaḥ sthitāḥ
10. Let us go to this hermitage (āśrama) of Gauri, which is graced by an assembly of sages. My seven brothers are staying in these forests, behaving like (spiritual) seekers.
भ्रातरोऽष्टौ वयमिमे जातानेकतया तया ।
एकसंविन्मया जाता एकसंकल्पनिश्चयाः ॥ ११ ॥
bhrātaro'ṣṭau vayamime jātānekatayā tayā ,
ekasaṃvinmayā jātā ekasaṃkalpaniścayāḥ 11
11. bhrātaraḥ aṣṭau vayam ime jātāḥ ekatayā tayā
ekasaṃvinmayāḥ jātāḥ ekasaṅkalpaniścayāḥ
11. ime aṣṭau vayam bhrātaraḥ tayā ekatayā jātāḥ
ekasaṃvinmayāḥ ekasaṅkalpaniścayāḥ jātāḥ
11. We, these eight brothers, were born from that same oneness. We emerged from a single consciousness, having a unified resolve.
तेन तेऽप्यत्र तपसे स्वनिश्चयसमाश्रयाः ।
स्थिता आगत्य विविधैस्तपोभिः क्षपितैनसः ॥ १२ ॥
tena te'pyatra tapase svaniścayasamāśrayāḥ ,
sthitā āgatya vividhaistapobhiḥ kṣapitainasaḥ 12
12. tena te api atra tapase svaniscayasamāśrayāḥ
sthitāḥ āgatya vividhaiḥ tapobhiḥ kṣapitainasaḥ
12. tena te api atra tapase svaniścayasamāśrayāḥ
āgatya vividhaiḥ tapobhiḥ kṣapitainasaḥ sthitāḥ
12. Therefore, they too came here, relying on their own resolve for asceticism (tapas). Having eradicated their impurities through various austerities (tapas), they remained.
तैः सार्धं भ्रातृभिः पूर्वमागत्याहमिहावसम् ।
षण्मासानाश्रमे गौर्यास्तेन दृष्टो मयैष सः ॥ १३ ॥
taiḥ sārdhaṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ pūrvamāgatyāhamihāvasam ,
ṣaṇmāsānāśrame gauryāstena dṛṣṭo mayaiṣa saḥ 13
13. taiḥ sārdham bhrātṛbhiḥ pūrvam āgatya aham iha avasam
ṣaṇmāsān āśrame gauryāḥ tena dṛṣṭaḥ mayā eṣaḥ saḥ
13. pūrvam taiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham aham iha āgatya gauyāḥ āśrame ṣaṇmāsān avasam.
tena mayā eṣaḥ saḥ dṛṣṭaḥ
13. Previously, I came here with those brothers and resided for six months in Gauri's hermitage (āśrama). That is why I saw him.
पुष्पखण्डतरुच्छायासुप्तमुग्धमृगार्भकः ।
पर्णोटजाग्रविश्रान्तशुकोद्ग्राहितशास्त्रदृक् ॥ १४ ॥
puṣpakhaṇḍatarucchāyāsuptamugdhamṛgārbhakaḥ ,
parṇoṭajāgraviśrāntaśukodgrāhitaśāstradṛk 14
14. puṣpakhaṇḍatarucchāyāsuptamugdhamṛgārbhakaḥ
parṇoṭajāgraviśrāntaśukodgrāhitaśāstradṛk
14. puṣpakhaṇḍatarucchāyāsuptamugdhamṛgārbhakaḥ
parṇoṭajāgraviśrāntaśukodgrāhitaśāstradṛk
14. He (the person I saw) was one whose charming fawns slept peacefully in the shade of flowering trees, and whose profound scriptural insights were repeated and learned by parrots resting at the entrance of his leaf-hut.
तद्ब्रह्मलोकसंकाशमेहि मुन्याश्रमं श्रिये ।
गच्छावोऽच्छतरं तत्र चेतः पुण्यैर्भविष्यति ॥ १५ ॥
tadbrahmalokasaṃkāśamehi munyāśramaṃ śriye ,
gacchāvo'cchataraṃ tatra cetaḥ puṇyairbhaviṣyati 15
15. tat brahmalokasaṃkāśam ehi munyāśramam śriye
gacchāvaḥ acchataram tatra cetaḥ puṇyaiḥ bhaviṣyati
15. ehi tat munyāśramam brahmalokasaṃkāśam śriye
gacchāvaḥ tatra cetaḥ puṇyaiḥ acchataram bhaviṣyati
15. Let us go to that hermitage (āśrama) of sages, which resembles the world of Brahma, for glory. There, our minds will become purer through meritorious actions.
विदुषामपि धीराणामपि तत्त्वविदामपि ।
त्वरते हि मनः पुंसामलंबुद्धिविलोकने ॥ १६ ॥
viduṣāmapi dhīrāṇāmapi tattvavidāmapi ,
tvarate hi manaḥ puṃsāmalaṃbuddhivilokane 16
16. viduṣām api dhīrāṇām api tattvavidām api
tvarate hi manaḥ puṃsām alambuddhivilokane
16. hi puṃsām manaḥ viduṣām api dhīrāṇām api
tattvavidām api alambuddhivilokane tvarate
16. Indeed, the minds of individuals, even those who are learned, even those who are resolute, and even those who comprehend the ultimate reality (tattva), hasten towards the realization of complete understanding.
तेनेत्युक्ते च तावावां प्राप्तो मुन्याश्रमं च तम् ।
यावत्तत्र महारण्ये पश्यावश्चान्तरूपिणम् ॥ १७ ॥
tenetyukte ca tāvāvāṃ prāpto munyāśramaṃ ca tam ,
yāvattatra mahāraṇye paśyāvaścāntarūpiṇam 17
17. tena iti ukte ca tau āvām prāptau munyāśramam ca
tam yāvat tatra mahāraṇye paśyāvaḥ ca antarūpiṇam
17. tena iti ukte ca tau āvām tam munyāśramam ca prāptau
yāvat tatra mahāraṇye ca paśyāvaḥ antarūpiṇam
17. And when this was spoken by him, we two arrived at that hermitage (āśrama) of sages. While there, in that great forest, we beheld an entity whose form was unseen or internal.
न वृक्षं नोटजं किंचिन्न गुल्मं न च मानवम् ।
न मुनिं नार्भकं नान्यन्न वेदिं न च वा द्विजम् ॥ १८ ॥
na vṛkṣaṃ noṭajaṃ kiṃcinna gulmaṃ na ca mānavam ,
na muniṃ nārbhakaṃ nānyanna vediṃ na ca vā dvijam 18
18. na vṛkṣam na uṭajam kiñcit na gulmam na ca mānavam na
munim na arbhakam na anyat na vedim na ca vā dvijam
18. na vṛkṣam na kiñcit uṭajam na gulmam na ca mānavam na
munim na arbhakam na anyat na vedim na ca vā dvijam
18. Neither a tree nor any hut, nor a bush, nor a human, nor a sage, nor a child, nor anything else; neither an altar, nor indeed a twice-born (dvija) person.
केवलं शून्यमेवाति तदरण्यमनन्तकम् ।
तापोपतप्तमभितो भूमौ स्थितमिवाम्बरम् ॥ १९ ॥
kevalaṃ śūnyamevāti tadaraṇyamanantakam ,
tāpopataptamabhito bhūmau sthitamivāmbaram 19
19. kevalam śūnyam eva ati tat araṇyam anantakam tāpa
upataptam abhitaḥ bhūmau sthitam iva ambaram
19. tat anantakam araṇyam kevalam śūnyam eva ati
abhitaḥ tāpa upataptam bhūmau sthitam iva ambaram
19. That boundless wilderness was nothing but utter emptiness, everywhere tormented by heat, like the sky itself fallen upon the earth.
हा कष्टं किमिदं जातमिति तस्मिन्वदत्यथ ।
आवाभ्यां सुचिरं भ्रान्त्वा दृष्ट एकत्र वृक्षकः ॥ २० ॥
hā kaṣṭaṃ kimidaṃ jātamiti tasminvadatyatha ,
āvābhyāṃ suciraṃ bhrāntvā dṛṣṭa ekatra vṛkṣakaḥ 20
20. hā kaṣṭam kim idam jātam iti tasmin vadati atha
āvābhyām suciram bhrāntvā dṛṣṭaḥ ekatra vṛkṣakaḥ
20. tasmin hā kaṣṭam idam kim jātam iti vadati atha
āvābhyām suciram bhrāntvā ekatra vṛkṣakaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ
20. "Alas, what a misfortune, what is this that has befallen us?" As he was speaking thus, after the two of us had wandered for a very long time, we finally spotted a single small tree.
स्निग्धच्छविर्घनच्छायः शीतलोऽम्बुधरोपमः ।
तले तस्य समाधाने संस्थितो वृद्धतापसः ॥ २१ ॥
snigdhacchavirghanacchāyaḥ śītalo'mbudharopamaḥ ,
tale tasya samādhāne saṃsthito vṛddhatāpasaḥ 21
21. snigdhacchaviḥ ghanacchāyaḥ śītalaḥ ambudharopamaḥ
tale tasya samādhāne saṃsthitaḥ vṛddhatāpasaḥ
21. snigdhacchaviḥ ghanacchāyaḥ śītalaḥ ambudharopamaḥ
tasya tale vṛddhatāpasaḥ samādhāne saṃsthitaḥ
21. Its appearance was glossy, its shade dense and cool, comparable to a cloud. Beneath it, an old ascetic was seated, absorbed in deep meditation (samādhi).
आवामग्रे मुनेस्तस्य च्छायायां शाद्वलस्थले ।
उपविष्टौ चिरं यावन्नासौ ध्यानान्निवर्तसे ॥ २२ ॥
āvāmagre munestasya cchāyāyāṃ śādvalasthale ,
upaviṣṭau ciraṃ yāvannāsau dhyānānnivartase 22
22. āvām agre muneḥ tasya chāyāyām śādvalasthale
upaviṣṭau ciram yāvat na asau dhyānāt nivartase
22. āvām tasya muneḥ agre chāyāyām śādvalasthale
upaviṣṭau yāvat asau dhyānāt na nivartase ciram
22. The two of us sat there for a long time in front of that sage, in the shade on the grassy patch of ground, waiting until he emerged from his meditation (dhyāna).
ततश्चिरेण कालेन मयोद्वेगेन चापलात् ।
उक्तं मुने प्रबुध्यस्व ध्यानादित्युच्चकैर्वचः ॥ २३ ॥
tataścireṇa kālena mayodvegena cāpalāt ,
uktaṃ mune prabudhyasva dhyānādityuccakairvacaḥ 23
23. tataḥ cireṇa kālena mayā udvegena ca cāpalāt
uktam mune prabudhyasva dhyānāt iti uccakaiḥ vacaḥ
23. tataḥ cireṇa kālena mayā udvegena ca cāpalāt mune
dhyānāt prabudhyasva iti uccakaiḥ vacaḥ uktam
23. Then, after a long time, driven by impatience and restlessness, I loudly said to the sage, "O sage, wake up from your meditation (dhyāna)!"
शब्देनोच्चैर्मदीयेन संप्रबुद्धोऽभवन्मुनिः ।
सिंहोऽम्बुदरवेणेव जृम्भां कृत्वाभ्युवाच च ॥ २४ ॥
śabdenoccairmadīyena saṃprabuddho'bhavanmuniḥ ,
siṃho'mbudaraveṇeva jṛmbhāṃ kṛtvābhyuvāca ca 24
24. śabdena uccaiḥ madīyena samprabuddhaḥ abhavat muniḥ
siṃhaḥ ambuda-raveṇa iva jṛmbhām kṛtvā abhyuvāca ca
24. madīyena uccaiḥ śabdena muniḥ samprabuddhaḥ abhavat,
ambuda-raveṇa iva siṃhaḥ jṛmbhām kṛtvā ca abhyuvāca
24. The sage fully awakened by my loud voice, like a lion by the sound of thunder, and having yawned, he spoke.
कौ भवन्ताविमौ साधू क्वासौ गौर्याश्रमो गतः ।
केन वाहमिहानीतः कालोऽयं कश्च वर्तते ॥ २५ ॥
kau bhavantāvimau sādhū kvāsau gauryāśramo gataḥ ,
kena vāhamihānītaḥ kālo'yaṃ kaśca vartate 25
25. kau bhavantau imau sādhū kva asau gaury-āśramaḥ gataḥ
kena vā aham iha ānītaḥ kālaḥ ayam kaḥ ca vartate
25. imau kau bhavantau sādhū? kva asau gaury-āśramaḥ gataḥ?
vā kena aham iha ānītaḥ? ca ayam kaḥ kālaḥ vartate?
25. Who are you two venerable persons? Where has Gauri's hermitage gone? And by whom was I brought here? What time is this now?
तेनेत्युक्ते मयाप्युक्तं भगवन्विद्धि ईदृशम् ।
न किंचिदावां बुद्धोऽपि कस्माज्जानासि न स्वयम् ॥ २६ ॥
tenetyukte mayāpyuktaṃ bhagavanviddhi īdṛśam ,
na kiṃcidāvāṃ buddho'pi kasmājjānāsi na svayam 26
26. tena iti ukte mayā api uktam bhagavan viddhi īdṛśam
na kiṃcit āvām buddhaḥ api kasmāt jānāsi na svayam
26. tena iti ukte,
mayā api uktam: bhagavan,
īdṛśam viddhi.
āvām kiṃcit na [jānīvaḥ].
api kasmāt svayam na jānāsi?
26. When he had thus spoken, I replied: "O venerable one, understand this: We two know nothing. Why do you not know it yourself, even though you are awakened?"
इति श्रुत्वा स भगवान्पुनर्ध्यानमयोऽभवत् ।
ददर्शोदन्तमखिलमस्माकं स्वात्मनस्तथा ॥ २७ ॥
iti śrutvā sa bhagavānpunardhyānamayo'bhavat ,
dadarśodantamakhilamasmākaṃ svātmanastathā 27
27. iti śrutvā saḥ bhagavān punaḥ dhyānamayaḥ abhavat
dadarśa udantam akhilam asmākam svātmanaḥ tathā
27. iti śrutvā saḥ bhagavān punaḥ dhyānamayaḥ abhavat
(saḥ) asmākam akhilam udantam tathā svātmanaḥ dadarśa
27. Having heard this, that venerable sage (Bhagavān) once again became absorbed in deep meditation (dhyāna). Through it, he perceived the entire sequence of events concerning us, as if within his own being.
मुहूर्तमात्रेणोवाच प्रबुध्य ध्यानतो मुनिः ।
श्रूयतामिदमाश्चर्यमार्यौ हि कार्यवेदिनौ ॥ २८ ॥
muhūrtamātreṇovāca prabudhya dhyānato muniḥ ,
śrūyatāmidamāścaryamāryau hi kāryavedinau 28
28. muhūrtamātreṇa uvāca prabudhya dhyānataḥ muniḥ
śrūyatām idam āścaryam āryau hi kāryavedinau
28. muniḥ dhyānataḥ prabudhya muhūrtamātreṇa uvāca (saḥ provāca) idam āścaryam śrūyatām,
hi āryau kāryavedinau
28. Awakening from his meditation (dhyāna) within a mere moment, the sage spoke: "Listen to this wondrous tale, for indeed, you two noble ones are experts in these matters."
यमिमे पश्यथः साधू कदम्बतरुपुत्रकम् ।
मदास्पदमरण्यान्या धम्मिल्लमिव पुष्पितम् ॥ २९ ॥
yamime paśyathaḥ sādhū kadambataruputrakam ,
madāspadamaraṇyānyā dhammillamiva puṣpitam 29
29. yam ime paśyathaḥ sādhū kadambataruputrakam
madāspadam araṇyānyāḥ dhammillaṃ iva puṣpitam
29. ime sādhū yam kadambataruputrakam paśyathaḥ,
(saḥ) madāspadam,
araṇyānyāḥ puṣpitam dhammillaṃ iva
29. Whom you two sages see as this young Kadamba tree, which is my dwelling place, resembling a blossoming top-knot (dhammilla) or ornament of the forest.
केनापि कारणेनास्मिन्सती वागीश्वरी सती ।
अवसद्दशवर्षाणि समस्तर्तुनिषेविता ॥ ३० ॥
kenāpi kāraṇenāsminsatī vāgīśvarī satī ,
avasaddaśavarṣāṇi samastartuniṣevitā 30
30. kenāpi kāraṇena asmin sati vāgīśvarī satī
avasat daśavarṣāṇi samastartuniṣevitā
30. kenāpi kāraṇena asmin sati satī vāgīśvarī
samastartuniṣevitā daśavarṣāṇi avasat
30. For some particular reason, the virtuous goddess of speech (Vāgīśvarī) herself dwelled in that very spot (referring to the Kadamba tree) for ten years, experiencing (literally, 'served by') all the seasons.
मन्दारकुन्दमकरन्दसुगन्धिताशं संसूच्छ्वसत्कुसुमराशिशशाङ्कनिष्ठम् ।
संतानकस्तवकहासविकासकान्तमामोदिमारुतसमस्तलताङ्गनौघम् ॥ ३३ ॥
mandārakundamakarandasugandhitāśaṃ saṃsūcchvasatkusumarāśiśaśāṅkaniṣṭham ,
saṃtānakastavakahāsavikāsakāntamāmodimārutasamastalatāṅganaugham 33

33. Whose directions are made fragrant by the nectar of mandāra and kunda flowers; which shines brilliantly like the moon amidst masses of blooming flowers; which is charming with the blossoming, smile-like clusters of santānaka flowers; and which is teeming with multitudes of creeper-women (latā-aṅganā) swayed by the fragrant breeze.
पुष्पाकरस्य नगरं नवगीतभृङ्गं भृङ्गाङ्गनाकुसुमखण्डकमण्डपाढ्यम् ।

34. The city of Spring (puṣpākara) where bees hum new tunes; which is rich with pavilions of flower petals for female bees (bhṛṅga-aṅganā); and where groups of divine (sura) and perfected (siddha) women sway on flower swings as delicate as moonlight.

Whose precincts are teeming with green pigeons, swans, parrots, cuckoos, ruddy geese, crows, cakrāhva birds, bhāsa birds, and sparrows; and which is delightful with the playful activities arranged by bheruṇḍa birds, roosters, partridges, golden-crested (hemacūḍa) fowls, rāḍhā birds, peacocks, and cranes.

Whose revered lotus-pedestal (pādāja-karṇika) is touched by the crowns of Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Devas (sura), and Siddhas; which is endowed with Kadamba trees and a Sarasvatī (river/goddess); possessing exquisite windows; and whose scent, arising from masses of soft-golden Champaka flowers, is absorbed by the star-studded sky and by the dense clouds.

37. Cool from the sun's rays, which were hidden by the expanse of young shoots and tender creepers swaying in the gentle breeze, and imbued with the abundance of pollen from the flowers of Kadamba, Oleander, Coconut, Palmyra, and Tamala trees.

38. Where frolicked Cuckoo-partridges, cranes, ruddy geese, kadamba-geese, and swans, amidst scattered patches of red water-lilies, white water-lilies, blue lotuses, and lotuses; and which possessed diverse energies (śakti) residing within its Talis, Guggul, Sandalwood, Coral, and auspicious trees.
तस्मिन्वने चिरमुवास हरार्धदेहा केनापि कारणवशेन चिराय गौरी ।
भूत्वा प्रसन्नशशिबिम्बमुखी कदम्बवागीश्वरी शशिकलेव शिवस्य मूर्ध्नि ॥ ३९ ॥

39. Gauri, who forms half the body of Hara, resided in that forest for a long time due to some particular reason. She appeared as Kadamba-Vagishvari, with a serene face resembling the orb of the moon, just like the crescent moon on Shiva's head.
