बाल्यानर्थमथ त्यक्त्वा पुमानभिहताशयः ।
आरोहति निपाताय यौवनं संभ्रमेण तु ॥ १ ॥

bālyānarthamatha tyaktvā pumānabhihatāśayaḥ ,

1. Śrī Rāma said: Then, having abandoned the troubles of childhood, a person with a perplexed mind indeed enters youth with eagerness, (only) for a fall.
तत्रानन्तविलासस्य लोलस्य स्वस्य चेतसः ।
वृत्तीरनुभवन्याति दुःखाद्दुःखान्तरं जडः ॥ २ ॥
tatrānantavilāsasya lolasya svasya cetasaḥ ,
vṛttīranubhavanyāti duḥkhādduḥkhāntaraṃ jaḍaḥ 2
2. tatra ananta-vilāsasya lolasya svasya cetasaḥ
vṛttīḥ anubhavan yāti duḥkhāt duḥkha-antaram jaḍaḥ
2. tatra jaḍaḥ svasya ananta-vilāsasya lolasya cetasaḥ
vṛttīḥ anubhavan duḥkhāt duḥkha-antaram yāti
2. There (in youth), the foolish person, experiencing the impulses of their own restless mind, which is given to endless indulgences, passes from one sorrow to another.
स्वचित्तबिलसंस्थेन नानासंभ्रमकारिणा ।
बलात्कामपिशाचेन विवशः परिभूयते ॥ ३ ॥
svacittabilasaṃsthena nānāsaṃbhramakāriṇā ,
balātkāmapiśācena vivaśaḥ paribhūyate 3
3. sva-citta-bila-saṃsthena nānā-saṃbhrama-kāriṇā
balāt kāma-piśācena vivaśaḥ paribhūyate
3. vivaśaḥ sva-citta-bila-saṃsthena
nānā-saṃbhrama-kāriṇā kāma-piśācena balāt paribhūyate
3. A helpless person is forcibly overpowered by the demon of desire (kāma), who resides in the cave of their own mind and causes various agitations.
चिन्तानां लोलवृत्तीनां ललनानामिवाऽवृतीः ।
अर्पयत्यवशं चेतो बालानामञ्जनं यथा ॥ ४ ॥
cintānāṃ lolavṛttīnāṃ lalanānāmivā'vṛtīḥ ,
arpayatyavaśaṃ ceto bālānāmañjanaṃ yathā 4
4. cintānām lolavr̥ttīnām lalanānām iva āvr̥tīḥ
arpayati avaśam cetaḥ bālānām añjanam yathā
4. yathā bālānām añjanam (arpayati),
(tathā) avaśam cetaḥ cintānām lolavr̥ttīnām lalanānām iva āvr̥tīḥ arpayati
4. Just as kohl (añjana) is applied to children, the helpless mind (cetas) gives itself up to states of agitation (āvr̥ti) that are as fickle as the activities of worries, or even of women.
ते ते दोषा दुरारम्भास्तत्र तं तादृशाशयम् ।
तद्रूपं प्रतिलुम्पन्ति दुष्टास्तेनैव ये मुने ॥ ५ ॥
te te doṣā durārambhāstatra taṃ tādṛśāśayam ,
tadrūpaṃ pratilumpanti duṣṭāstenaiva ye mune 5
5. te te doṣāḥ durārambhāḥ tatra tam tādr̥śāśayam
tadrūpam pratilumpanti duṣṭāḥ tena eva ye mune
5. mune,
ye te te doṣāḥ durārambhāḥ tena eva duṣṭāḥ,
(te) tatra tam tādr̥śāśayam tadrūpam pratilumpanti
5. O sage, those very faults, which have wicked beginnings and are themselves corrupt, indeed corrupt such a person (puruṣa) who possesses such a disposition and nature.
महानरकबीजेन संततभ्रमदायिना ।
यौवनेन न ये नष्टा नष्टा नान्येन ते जनाः ॥ ६ ॥
mahānarakabījena saṃtatabhramadāyinā ,
yauvanena na ye naṣṭā naṣṭā nānyena te janāḥ 6
6. mahānarakabījena saṃtatabhramadāyinā yauvanena
na ye naṣṭāḥ naṣṭāḥ na anyena te janāḥ
6. ye janāḥ mahānarakabījena saṃtatabhramadāyinā yauvanena na naṣṭāḥ,
te (janāḥ) anyena na naṣṭāḥ
6. Those individuals who are not ruined by youth - which is the seed of a great hell and the cause of perpetual delusion - are not ruined by anything else.
नानारसमयी चित्रवृत्तान्तनिचयोम्भिता ।
भीमा यौवनभूर्येन तीर्णा धीरः स उच्यते ॥ ७ ॥
nānārasamayī citravṛttāntanicayombhitā ,
bhīmā yauvanabhūryena tīrṇā dhīraḥ sa ucyate 7
7. nānārasamayī citravr̥ttāntanicayombhitā bhīmā
yauvanabhūḥ yena tīrṇā dhīraḥ saḥ ucyate
7. yena nānārasamayī citravr̥ttāntanicayombhitā bhīmā yauvanabhūḥ tīrṇā,
saḥ dhīraḥ ucyate
7. He who has crossed the formidable land of youth (yauvanabhū), which is replete with various emotions and brimming with a multitude of diverse events, is truly called a steadfast person (dhīra).
निमेषभासुराकारमालोलघनगर्जितम् ।
विद्युत्प्रकाशमशिवं यौवनं मे न रोचते ॥ ८ ॥
nimeṣabhāsurākāramālolaghanagarjitam ,
vidyutprakāśamaśivaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate 8
8. nimeṣabhāsurākāram ālolaghanagarjitam
vidyutprakāśam aśivam yauvanam me na rocate
8. yauvanam nimeṣabhāsurākāram ālolaghanagarjitam
vidyutprakāśam aśivam me na rocate
8. Youth, with its momentarily brilliant appearance, its restless, thunderous clamor like agitated clouds, and its lightning-like glow, is inauspicious and does not appeal to me.
मधुरं स्वादु तिक्तं च दूषणं दोषभूषणम् ।
सुराकल्लोलसदृशं यौवनं मे न रोचते ॥ ९ ॥
madhuraṃ svādu tiktaṃ ca dūṣaṇaṃ doṣabhūṣaṇam ,
surākallolasadṛśaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate 9
9. madhuram svādu tiktam ca dūṣaṇam doṣabhūṣaṇam
surākallolasadṛśam yauvanam me na rocate
9. yauvanam madhuram svādu ca tiktam dūṣaṇam
doṣabhūṣaṇam surākallolasadṛśam me na rocate
9. Youth, which is both sweet and tasty, yet also bitter; which is a source of corruption and an embellishment for faults; and which resembles the intoxicating surge of wine, does not appeal to me.
असत्यं सत्यसंकाशमचिराद्विप्रलम्भदम् ।
स्वप्नाङ्गनासङ्गसमं यौवनं मे न रोचते ॥ १० ॥
asatyaṃ satyasaṃkāśamacirādvipralambhadam ,
svapnāṅganāsaṅgasamaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate 10
10. asatyam satyasaṅkāśam acirāt vipralambhadam
svapnāṅganāsaṅgasamam yauvanam me na rocate
10. yauvanam asatyam satyasaṅkāśam acirāt
vipralambhadam svapnāṅganāsaṅgasamam me na rocate
10. Youth, which is untrue but appears to be true, quickly leads to disappointment and is like the embrace of a woman in a dream; it does not appeal to me.
सर्वस्याग्रे सर्वपुंसः क्षणमात्रमनोहरम् ।
गन्धर्वनगरप्रख्यं यौवनं मे न रोचते ॥ ११ ॥
sarvasyāgre sarvapuṃsaḥ kṣaṇamātramanoharam ,
gandharvanagaraprakhyaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate 11
11. sarvasya agre sarvapuṃsaḥ kṣaṇamātramanoharam
gandharvanagaraprakhyam yauvanam me na rocate
11. yauvanam sarvasya agre sarvapuṃsaḥ kṣaṇamātramanoharam
gandharvanagaraprakhyam me na rocate
11. Youth, which is pleasing to all people only for a moment and resembles a phantom city (gandharvanagara), does not appeal to me.
इषुप्रपातमात्रं हि सुखदं दुःखभासुरम् ।
दाहपोषप्रदं नित्यं यौवनं मे न रोचते ॥ १२ ॥
iṣuprapātamātraṃ hi sukhadaṃ duḥkhabhāsuram ,
dāhapoṣapradaṃ nityaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate 12
12. iṣu-prapāta-mātram hi sukha-dam duḥkha-bhāsuram
dāha-poṣa-pradam nityam yauvanam me na rocate
12. hi yauvanam iṣu-prapāta-mātram sukha-dam
duḥkha-bhāsuram dāha-poṣa-pradam nityam me na rocate
12. Indeed, youth (yauvana) is as fleeting as an arrow's fall, superficially pleasant but radiant with suffering. It constantly causes torment and fosters detrimental growth. This youth (yauvana) does not appeal to me.
आपातमात्ररमणं सद्भावरहितान्तरम् ।
वेश्यास्त्रीसंगमप्रख्यं यौवनं मे न रोचते ॥ १३ ॥
āpātamātraramaṇaṃ sadbhāvarahitāntaram ,
veśyāstrīsaṃgamaprakhyaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate 13
13. āpāta-mātra-ramaṇam sad-bhāva-rahita-antaram
veśyā-strī-saṅgama-prakhyam yauvanam me na rocate
13. yauvanam āpāta-mātra-ramaṇam sad-bhāva-rahita-antaram
veśyā-strī-saṅgama-prakhyam me na rocate
13. Youth (yauvana), charming only at first glance, devoid of inner sincerity, and comparable to an encounter with a courtesan, does not appeal to me.
ये केचन समारम्भास्ते सर्वे सर्वदुःखदाः ।
तारुण्ये संनिधिं यान्ति महोत्पाता इव क्षये ॥ १४ ॥
ye kecana samārambhāste sarve sarvaduḥkhadāḥ ,
tāruṇye saṃnidhiṃ yānti mahotpātā iva kṣaye 14
14. ye kecana samārambhāḥ te sarve sarva-duḥkha-dāḥ
tāruṇye saṃnidhim yānti mahā-utpātāḥ iva kṣaye
14. ye kecana samārambhāḥ te sarve sarva-duḥkha-dāḥ
tāruṇye mahā-utpātāḥ iva kṣaye saṃnidhim yānti
14. Whatever undertakings (samārambha) there are, all of them bring every kind of suffering. In youth (tāruṇya), they manifest just like great calamities (utpāta) appear at the time of universal dissolution (kṣaya).
हार्दान्धकारकारिण्या भैरवाकारवानपि ।
यौवनाज्ञानयामिन्या बिभेति भगवानपि ॥ १५ ॥
hārdāndhakārakāriṇyā bhairavākāravānapi ,
yauvanājñānayāminyā bibheti bhagavānapi 15
15. hārda-andhakāra-kāriṇyā bhairava-ākāra-vān api
yauvana-ajñāna-yāminyā bibheti bhagavān api
15. bhagavān api bhairava-ākāra-vān api
hārda-andhakāra-kāriṇyā yauvana-ajñāna-yāminyā bibheti
15. Even the Lord (Bhagavān), though possessing a formidable appearance, fears the night of ignorance (ajñāna) which is youth (yauvana), because it causes darkness in the heart (hārda).
सुविस्मृतशुभाचारं बुद्धिवैधुर्यदायिनम् ।
ददात्यतितरामेष भ्रमं यौवनसंभ्रमः ॥ १६ ॥
suvismṛtaśubhācāraṃ buddhivaidhuryadāyinam ,
dadātyatitarāmeṣa bhramaṃ yauvanasaṃbhramaḥ 16
16. suvismṛtaśubhācāram buddhivaidhurya-dāyinam
dadāti atitarām eṣaḥ bhramam yauvanasaṃbhramaḥ
16. eṣaḥ yauvanasaṃbhramaḥ suvismṛtaśubhācāram
buddhivaidhurya-dāyinam bhramam atitarām dadāti
16. The exhilaration of youth excessively causes delusion, leading one to completely forget auspicious conduct and producing mental confusion.
कान्तावियोगजातेन हृदि दुःस्पर्शवह्निना ।
यौवने दह्यते जन्तुस्तरुर्दावाग्निना यथा ॥ १७ ॥
kāntāviyogajātena hṛdi duḥsparśavahninā ,
yauvane dahyate jantustarurdāvāgninā yathā 17
17. kāntāviyogajātena hṛdi duḥsparśavahninā
yauvane dahyate jantuḥ taruḥ dāvāgninā yathā
17. yathā taruḥ dāvāgninā (dahyate),
(tathā) jantuḥ यौवने कान्तावियोगजातेन दुःस्पर्शवह्निना हृदि दह्यते
17. In youth, a living being is consumed by an unbearable fire (vahni) in the heart, a fire born from the separation from a beloved, just as a tree is consumed by a forest fire.
सुनिर्मलापि विस्तीर्णा पावन्यपि हि यौवने ।
मतिः कलुषतामेति प्रावृषीव तरङ्गिणी ॥ १८ ॥
sunirmalāpi vistīrṇā pāvanyapi hi yauvane ,
matiḥ kaluṣatāmeti prāvṛṣīva taraṅgiṇī 18
18. sunirmalā api vistīrṇā pāvanī api hi yauvane
matiḥ kaluṣatām eti prāvṛṣi iva taraṅgiṇī
18. सुनिर्मला अपि,
विस्तीर्णा,
पावनी अपि हि मतिः यौवने प्रावृषि तरङ्गिणी इव कलुषताम् एति
18. Even if inherently very pure, vast, and purifying, the mind (mati) becomes sullied during youth, just as a river (taraṅgiṇī) becomes turbid during the monsoon season.
शक्यते घनकल्लोला भीमा लङ्घयितुं नदी ।
न तु तारुण्यतरला तृष्णातरलितान्तरा ॥ १९ ॥
śakyate ghanakallolā bhīmā laṅghayituṃ nadī ,
na tu tāruṇyataralā tṛṣṇātaralitāntarā 19
19. śakyate ghanakallolā bhīmā laṅghayitum nadī
na tu tāruṇyataralā tṛṣṇātaralitāntarā
19. ghanakallolā bhīmā nadī laṅghayitum śakyate,
tu tāruṇyataralā tṛṣṇātaralitāntarā (tṛṣṇā) na (śakyate)
19. A formidable river with mighty waves can be crossed, but not the craving (tṛṣṇā) which is unsteady because of youth and has an agitated inner core due to desire.
सा कान्ता तौ स्तनौ पीनौ ते विलासास्तदाननम् ।
तारुण्य इति चिन्ताभिर्याति जर्जरतां जनः ॥ २० ॥
sā kāntā tau stanau pīnau te vilāsāstadānanam ,
tāruṇya iti cintābhiryāti jarjaratāṃ janaḥ 20
20. sā kāntā tau stanau pīnau te vilāsāḥ tat ānanam
tāruṇyam iti cintābhiḥ yāti jarjaratām janaḥ
20. sā kāntā tau pīnau stanau te vilāsāḥ tat ānanam
iti tāruṇyam cintābhiḥ janaḥ jarjaratām yāti
20. That beloved woman, those plump breasts, those captivating charms, that face - it is with thoughts like 'this is youth' that people become worn out.
नरं तरलतृष्णार्ति युवानमिह साधवः ।
पूजयन्ति न तु च्छिन्नं जरत्तृणलवं यथा ॥ २१ ॥
naraṃ taralatṛṣṇārti yuvānamiha sādhavaḥ ,
pūjayanti na tu cchinnaṃ jarattṛṇalavaṃ yathā 21
21. naram taralatṛṣṇārtiṃ yuvānam iha sādhavaḥ
pūjayanti na tu chinnam jarat-tṛṇa-lavam yathā
21. iha sādhavaḥ taralatṛṣṇārtiṃ yuvānam naram pūjayanti,
na tu chinnam jarattṛṇalavam yathā
21. In this world, virtuous people honor a young man, even if he is afflicted by restless cravings, but they do not honor him when he is like a severed blade of old grass.
नाशायैव मदार्तस्य दोषमौक्तिकधारिणः ।
अभिमानमहेभस्य नित्यालानं हि यौवनम् ॥ २२ ॥
nāśāyaiva madārtasya doṣamauktikadhāriṇaḥ ,
abhimānamahebhasya nityālānaṃ hi yauvanam 22
22. nāśāya eva mada-ārtasya doṣa-mauktika-dhāriṇaḥ
abhimāna-mahebhasya nitya-ālānam hi yauvanam
22. yauvanam hi mada-ārtasya doṣa-mauktika-dhāriṇaḥ
abhimāna-mahebhasya nitya-ālānam eva nāśāya
22. Youth is indeed the permanent tying post for the great elephant of ego (ahaṅkāra), which is afflicted by arrogance and bears the pearls of faults; it leads solely to its destruction.
मनोविपुलमूलानां दोषाशीविषधारिणाम् ।
शोषरोदनवृक्षाणां यौवनं बत काननम् ॥ २३ ॥
manovipulamūlānāṃ doṣāśīviṣadhāriṇām ,
śoṣarodanavṛkṣāṇāṃ yauvanaṃ bata kānanam 23
23. manas-vipula-mūlānām doṣa-āśīviṣa-dhāriṇām
śoṣa-rodana-vṛkṣāṇām yauvanam bata kānanam
23. bata yauvanam manas-vipula-mūlānām
doṣa-āśīviṣa-dhāriṇām śoṣa-rodana-vṛkṣāṇām kānanam
23. Alas, youth is a forest (kānanam) for the trees of decay and lamentation, which have vast roots in the mind and bear the poisonous snakes of faults.
रसकेसरसंबाधं कुविकल्पदलाकुलम् ।
दुश्चिन्ताचञ्चरीकाणां पुष्करं विद्धि यौवनम् ॥ २४ ॥
rasakesarasaṃbādhaṃ kuvikalpadalākulam ,
duścintācañcarīkāṇāṃ puṣkaraṃ viddhi yauvanam 24
24. rasakesarasaṃbādham kuvikalpadalākulam
duścintācañcarīkāṇām puṣkaram viddhi yauvanam
24. yauvanam rasakesarasaṃbādham kuvikalpadalākulam
duścintācañcarīkāṇām puṣkaram viddhi
24. Know that youth (yauvana) is a lotus, teeming with the stamens of emotions, agitated by the petals of misguided notions, and a gathering place for the bees of anxious thoughts.
कृताकृतकुपक्षाणां हृत्सरस्तीरचारिणाम् ।
आधिव्याधिविहंगानामालयो नवयौवनम् ॥ २५ ॥
kṛtākṛtakupakṣāṇāṃ hṛtsarastīracāriṇām ,
ādhivyādhivihaṃgānāmālayo navayauvanam 25
25. kṛtākṛtakupakṣāṇām hṛtsarastīracāriṇām
ādhivyādhivihangānām ālayaḥ navayauvanam
25. navayauvanam kṛtākṛtakupakṣāṇām
hṛtsarastīracāriṇām ādhivyādhivihangānām ālayaḥ
25. New youth (yauvana) is the dwelling place for the birds of mental distress (ādhi) and physical illness (vyādhi), [birds] whose faulty wings are inconsistent and which roam on the shores of the lake of the heart.
जडानां गतसंख्यानां कल्लोलानां विलासिनाम् ।
अनपेक्षितमर्यादो वारिधिर्नवयौवनम् ॥ २६ ॥
jaḍānāṃ gatasaṃkhyānāṃ kallolānāṃ vilāsinām ,
anapekṣitamaryādo vāridhirnavayauvanam 26
26. jaḍānām gatasaṃkhyānām kallolānām vilāsinām
anapekṣitamaryādaḥ vāridhiḥ navayauvanam
26. navayauvanam anapekṣitamaryādaḥ jaḍānām
gatasaṃkhyānām vilāsinām kallolānām vāridhiḥ
26. New youth (yauvana) is an ocean (vāridhi) that disregards all limits (maryādā), [an ocean] of countless, heedless, and playful waves.
सर्वेषां गुणसर्गाणां परिरूढरजस्तमाः ।
अपनेतुं स्थितिं दक्षो विषमो यौवनानिलः ॥ २७ ॥
sarveṣāṃ guṇasargāṇāṃ parirūḍharajastamāḥ ,
apanetuṃ sthitiṃ dakṣo viṣamo yauvanānilaḥ 27
27. sarveṣām guṇasargāṇām parirūḍharajastamāḥ
apanetum sthitim dakṣaḥ viṣamaḥ yauvanānilaḥ
27. viṣamaḥ yauvanānilaḥ parirūḍharajastamāḥ
sarveṣām guṇasargāṇām sthitim apanetum dakṣaḥ
27. The formidable wind of youth (yauvana), in which the qualities (guṇa) of activity (rajas) and inertia (tamas) are firmly rooted, is capable of displacing the stability of all formations born of the guṇas.
नयन्ति पाण्डुतां वक्रमाकुलावकरोत्कटाः ।
आरोहन्ति परां कोटिं रूक्षा यौवनपांसवः ॥ २८ ॥
nayanti pāṇḍutāṃ vakramākulāvakarotkaṭāḥ ,
ārohanti parāṃ koṭiṃ rūkṣā yauvanapāṃsavaḥ 28
28. nayanti pāṇḍutām vakram ākulāvakarotkaṭāḥ |
ārohanti parām koṭim rūkṣāḥ yauvanapāṃsavaḥ ||
28. rūkṣāḥ ākulāvakarotkaṭāḥ yauvanapāṃsavaḥ vakram
pāṇḍutām nayanti ca parām koṭim ārohanti
28. The rough influences of youth, agitated and excessively prominent with impurities, both render the face pale and reach their highest intensity.
उद्वोधयति दोषालिं निकृन्तति गुणावलिम् ।
नराणां यौवनोल्लासो विलासो दुष्कृतश्रियाम् ॥ २९ ॥
udvodhayati doṣāliṃ nikṛntati guṇāvalim ,
narāṇāṃ yauvanollāso vilāso duṣkṛtaśriyām 29
29. udbodhayati doṣālim nikṛntati guṇāvalim |
narāṇām yauvanollāsaḥ vilāsaḥ duṣkṛtaśriyām ||
29. narāṇām yauvanollāsaḥ duṣkṛtaśriyām vilāsaḥ
[san] doṣālim udbodhayati guṇāvalim nikṛntati ca
29. In human beings, the exuberance of youth is a manifestation of the prosperity of evil deeds; it awakens a multitude of faults and destroys an array of virtues.
शरीरपङ्कजरजश्चञ्चलां मतिषट्पदीम् ।
निबध्नन्मोहयत्येष नवयौवनचन्द्रमाः ॥ ३० ॥
śarīrapaṅkajarajaścañcalāṃ matiṣaṭpadīm ,
nibadhnanmohayatyeṣa navayauvanacandramāḥ 30
30. śarīrapaṅkajarajas-cañcalām matiṣaṭpadīm |
nibadhnan mohayati eṣaḥ navayauvanacandramāḥ ||
30. eṣaḥ navayauvanacandramāḥ śarīrapaṅkajarajas-cañcalām
matiṣaṭpadīm nibadhnan mohayati
30. This moon of new youth, by captivating the mind-bee - which is restless like the pollen of the body-lotus - bewilders it.
शरीरखण्डकोद्भूता रम्या यौवनवल्लरी ।
लग्नमेव मनोभृङ्गं मदयत्युन्नतिं गता ॥ ३१ ॥
śarīrakhaṇḍakodbhūtā ramyā yauvanavallarī ,
lagnameva manobhṛṅgaṃ madayatyunnatiṃ gatā 31
31. śarīrakhaṇḍakodbhūtā ramyā yauvanavallarī |
lagnam eva manobhṛṅgam madayati unnatim gatā ||
31. śarīrakhaṇḍakodbhūtā ramyā unnatim gatā
yauvanavallarī lagnam eva manobhṛṅgam madayati
31. The beautiful creeper of youth, which originates from the body and has attained maturity, indeed intoxicates the mind-bee that is attached to it.
शरीरमरुतापोत्थां युवतामृगतृष्णिकाम् ।
मनोमृगाः प्रधावन्तः पतन्ति विषयावटे ॥ ३२ ॥
śarīramarutāpotthāṃ yuvatāmṛgatṛṣṇikām ,
manomṛgāḥ pradhāvantaḥ patanti viṣayāvaṭe 32
32. śarīramarutāpotthām yuvatāmṛgatṛṣṇikām manaḥ
mṛgāḥ pradhāvantaḥ patanti viṣaya-āvaṭe
32. manaḥ mṛgāḥ śarīramarutāpotthām yuvatāmṛgatṛṣṇikām
pradhāvantaḥ viṣaya-āvaṭe patanti
32. The deer-like minds, rushing after the mirage of youth which arises from the heat of the body's vital airs, fall into the pit of sense objects.
शरीरशर्वरीज्योत्स्ना चित्तकेसरिणः सटा ।
लहरी जीविताम्भोधेर्युवता मे न तुष्टये ॥ ३३ ॥
śarīraśarvarījyotsnā cittakesariṇaḥ saṭā ,
laharī jīvitāmbhodheryuvatā me na tuṣṭaye 33
33. śarīra-śarvarī-jyotsnā citta-kesariṇaḥ saṭā
laharī jīvita-ambhodheḥ yuvatā me na tuṣṭaye
33. yuvatā śarīra-śarvarī-jyotsnā citta-kesariṇaḥ
saṭā jīvita-ambhodheḥ laharī me na tuṣṭaye
33. Youth (yuvatā) is like the moonlight of the body's night, the mane of the mind-lion, and a wave in the ocean of life. It brings no satisfaction to me.
दिनानि कतिचिद्येयं फलिता देहजङ्गले ।
युवता शरदस्यां हि न समाश्वासमर्हथ ॥ ३४ ॥
dināni katicidyeyaṃ phalitā dehajaṅgale ,
yuvatā śaradasyāṃ hi na samāśvāsamarhatha 34
34. dināni katicit yā iyam phalitā deha-jaṅgale
yuvatā śaradi asyām hi na samāśvāsam arhatha
34. yā iyam yuvatā deha-jaṅgale katicit dināni
phalitā asyām śaradi hi samāśvāsam na arhatha
34. This youth (yuvatā), which has blossomed for only a few days in the wilderness of the body, certainly does not deserve solace (samāśvāsam) in this autumn (śarad).
झटित्येव प्रयात्येव शरीराद्युवताखगः ।
क्षणेनैवाल्पभाग्यस्य हस्ताच्चिन्तामणिर्यथा ॥ ३५ ॥
jhaṭityeva prayātyeva śarīrādyuvatākhagaḥ ,
kṣaṇenaivālpabhāgyasya hastāccintāmaṇiryathā 35
35. jhaṭiti eva prayāti eva śarīrāt yuvatā-khagaḥ
kṣaṇena eva alpa-bhāgyasya hastāt cintāmaṇiḥ yathā
35. yuvatā-khagaḥ jhaṭiti eva śarīrāt prayāti eva
yathā alpa-bhāgyasya hastāt cintāmaṇiḥ kṣaṇena eva
35. Indeed, the bird of youth (yuvatā) swiftly departs from the body, just as a wish-fulfilling jewel (cintāmaṇi) instantaneously slips from the hand of an unfortunate person.
यदा यदा परां कोटिमध्यारोहति यौवनम् ।
वल्गन्ति सज्वराः कामास्तदा नाशाय केवलम् ॥ ३६ ॥
yadā yadā parāṃ koṭimadhyārohati yauvanam ,
valganti sajvarāḥ kāmāstadā nāśāya kevalam 36
36. yadā yadā parām koṭim adhyārohati yauvanam
valganti sajvarāḥ kāmāḥ tadā nāśāya kevalam
36. yadā yadā yauvanam parām koṭim adhyārohati,
tadā sajvarāḥ kāmāḥ kevalam nāśāya valganti.
36. Whenever youth attains its highest peak, then passionate desires, as if feverish, become rampant, leading only to ruin.
तावदेव विवल्गन्ति रागद्वेषपिशाचकाः ।
नास्तमेति समस्तैषा यावद्यौवनयामिनी ॥ ३७ ॥
tāvadeva vivalganti rāgadveṣapiśācakāḥ ,
nāstameti samastaiṣā yāvadyauvanayāminī 37
37. tāvadeva vivalganti rāgadveṣapiśācakāḥ na
astam eti samastā eṣā yāvat yauvanayāminī
37. rāgadveṣapiśācakāḥ tāvadeva vivalganti,
yāvat eṣā samastā yauvanayāminī na astam eti.
37. The demons of attachment (rāga) and aversion (dveṣa) leap and rage only so long; as long as this entire night of youth (yauvanayāminī) has not yet passed, they do not go to rest.
नानाविकारबहुले वराके क्षणनाशिनि ।
कारुण्यं कुरु तारुण्ये म्रियमाणे सुतै यथा ॥ ३८ ॥
nānāvikārabahule varāke kṣaṇanāśini ,
kāruṇyaṃ kuru tāruṇye mriyamāṇe sutai yathā 38
38. nānāvikārabahule varāke kṣaṇanāśini kāruṇyam
kuru tāruṇye mriyamāṇe sutaiḥ yathā
38. nānāvikārabahule varāke kṣaṇanāśini mriyamāṇe tāruṇye,
(tvaṃ) kāruṇyam kuru,
yathā sutaiḥ (kuru).
38. Show compassion for youth (tāruṇya), which is wretched, full of various imperfections, and perishable in a moment, just as one would for dying sons.
हर्षमायाति यो मोहात्पुरुषः क्षणभङ्गिना ।
यौवनेन महामुग्धः स वै नरमृगः स्मृतः ॥ ३९ ॥
harṣamāyāti yo mohātpuruṣaḥ kṣaṇabhaṅginā ,
yauvanena mahāmugdhaḥ sa vai naramṛgaḥ smṛtaḥ 39
39. harṣam āyāti yaḥ mohāt puruṣaḥ kṣaṇabhaṅginā
yauvanena mahāmugdhaḥ saḥ vai naramṛgaḥ smṛtaḥ
39. yaḥ puruṣaḥ mohāt kṣaṇabhaṅginā yauvanena harṣam āyāti,
sa mahāmugdhaḥ vai naramṛgaḥ smṛtaḥ.
39. That person who, out of delusion (moha), rejoices in fleeting youth is indeed greatly deluded (mahāmugdhaḥ); he is considered a human animal (naramṛga).
मानमोहान्मदोन्मत्तं यौवनं योऽभिलष्यति ।
अचिरेण स दुर्बुद्धिः पश्चात्तापेन युज्यते ॥ ४० ॥
mānamohānmadonmattaṃ yauvanaṃ yo'bhilaṣyati ,
acireṇa sa durbuddhiḥ paścāttāpena yujyate 40
40. yaḥ mānamohāt madonmattam yauvanam abhilaṣyati
saḥ durbuddhiḥ acireṇa paścāttāpena yujyate
40. yaḥ mānamohāt madonmattam yauvanam abhilaṣyati
saḥ durbuddhiḥ acireṇa paścāttāpena yujyate
40. The person who craves youth, which is often intoxicated by pride and delusion, that misguided individual soon becomes afflicted with regret.
ते पूज्यास्ते महात्मानस्त एव पुरुषा भुवि ।
ये सुखेन समुत्तीर्णाः साधो यौवनसंकटात् ॥ ४१ ॥
te pūjyāste mahātmānasta eva puruṣā bhuvi ,
ye sukhena samuttīrṇāḥ sādho yauvanasaṃkaṭāt 41
41. sādho ye sukhena yauvanasaṅkaṭāt samuttīrṇāḥ te
eva bhuvi pūjyāḥ te mahātmānaḥ te eva puruṣāḥ
41. sādho ye sukhena yauvanasaṅkaṭāt samuttīrṇāḥ te
eva bhuvi pūjyāḥ te mahātmānaḥ te eva puruṣāḥ
41. Those who have easily overcome the crisis of youth, O good one, they are truly venerable, they are indeed great souls (mahātman), and they alone are the genuine people on this earth.
सुखेन तीर्यतेऽम्भोधिरुत्कृष्टमकराकरः ।
न कल्लोलबलोल्लासि सदोषं हतयौवनम् ॥ ४२ ॥
sukhena tīryate'mbhodhirutkṛṣṭamakarākaraḥ ,
na kallolabalollāsi sadoṣaṃ hatayauvanam 42
42. sukhena tīryate ambhodhirutkṛṣṭamakarākaraḥ
na kallolabalollāsi sadoṣam hatayauvanam
42. utkṛṣṭamakarākaraḥ ambhodhiḥ sukhena tīryate.
kallolabalollāsi sadoṣam hatayauvanam [tu] na [sukhena tīryate]
42. The ocean, which is an abode of formidable sea-creatures, can be easily crossed. However, youth, when it is flawed and destructive and surges with the might of its passions like powerful waves, is not easily traversed.
विनयभूषितमार्यजनास्पदं करुणयोज्ज्वलमावलितं गुणैः ।
इह हि दुर्लभमङ्ग सुयौवनं जगति काननमम्बरगं यथा ॥ ४३ ॥
vinayabhūṣitamāryajanāspadaṃ karuṇayojjvalamāvalitaṃ guṇaiḥ ,
iha hi durlabhamaṅga suyauvanaṃ jagati kānanamambaragaṃ yathā 43
43. aṅga vinayabhūṣitam āryajanāspadam
karuṇayā ujjvalam āvalitam
guṇaiḥ iha hi durlabham suyauvanam
jagati kānanam ambaragam yathā
43. aṅga,
vinayabhūṣitam āryajanāspadam karuṇayā ujjvalam guṇaiḥ āvalitam suyauvanam iha jagati ambaragam kānanam yathā hi durlabham
43. O dear one, indeed, a truly excellent youth (suyauvana) – one adorned with humility, a refuge for noble persons, shining with compassion, and endowed with virtues – is as rare in this world as a forest growing in the sky.
