बहिष्ठैर्बाह्यमेवान्तरन्तस्थैः स्वप्नमिन्द्रियैः ।
जीवो वेत्ति द्वयस्थातितीव्रसंवेगिभिर्द्वयम् ॥ १ ॥

The sage said: The individual soul (jīva) perceives only the external world through its outward-directed senses, and a dream state through its inward-directed senses. Moreover, through senses intensely stimulated in both these states, it comprehends both.
यदेन्द्रियाणि तिष्ठन्ति बाह्यतश्च समाकुलम् ।
तदा म्लानानुभवनः संकल्पार्थोऽनुभूयते ॥ २ ॥

yadendriyāṇi tiṣṭhanti bāhyataśca samākulam ,

yadā indriyāṇi bāhyataḥ ca samākulam tiṣṭhanti,

When the senses are externally active and agitated, then a conceptual object (saṃkalpa-artha), whose experience is faint, is perceived.
यदा त्वन्तर्मुखान्येव सन्त्यक्षाणि तदा जगत् ।
अणुमात्रं स्ववपुषि जीवस्तेनातिवेत्ति तत् ॥ ३ ॥

yadā tu akṣāṇi antarmukhāni eva santi,
tadā jīvaḥ tena tat jagat sva vapuṣi aṇumātram ativetti .

But when the senses are indeed inward-facing, then, due to this, the individual soul (jīva) intensely perceives that world (as if it were) merely an atom within its own body.
जगप्सप्रतिघं नास्ति किंचिदेव कदाचन ।
जीवेक्षणानामक्षाणां दृष्टिरप्रतिघा जगत् ॥ ४ ॥

jagapsapratighaṃ nāsti kiṃcideva kadācana ,

jagat sa-pratigham na asti kiñcit eva kadācana .
jīva-īkṣaṇānām akṣāṇām dṛṣṭiḥ apratighā jagat || 4 ||

kadācana kiñcit eva jagat sapratigham na asti .
jīva-īkṣaṇānām akṣāṇām dṛṣṭiḥ apratighā jagat (bhavati) .

Nothing in the world is ever truly obstructive or resistant. The perception of the senses (akṣa) – the individual soul's (jīva) means of observation – is itself the unobstructed world.
जीवनेत्राणीन्द्रियाणि यदा बाह्यमयान्यलम् ।
तदा बाह्यात्मकं वेत्ति चिति जीवो जगद्वपुः ॥ ५ ॥

When the senses, which are the guides of the individual soul (jīva), are entirely externally oriented, then the individual soul (jīva) perceives the world's form as external in its consciousness.
श्रोत्रं त्वगीक्षणं घ्राणं जिह्वा चेतीहितात्मकः ।
संघातः प्रोच्यते जीवश्चिद्रूपोऽनिलमूर्तिमान् ॥ ६ ॥

The aggregate of the ear, skin, eye, nose, and tongue, whose nature is activity, is called the individual soul (jīva), which possesses the form of consciousness and has a body made of vital breath (anila).
सर्वत्र सर्वदा जीवः सर्वेन्द्रियमयः स्थितः ।
चिच्चिद्व्योमाव्ययस्तेन सर्वं सर्वत्र पश्यति ॥ ७ ॥

The individual soul (jīva), being consciousness, the imperishable space of consciousness, abides everywhere and always, encompassing all senses. Therefore, it perceives everything everywhere.
श्लेष्मात्मना रसेनान्तर्जीव आपूर्यते यदा ।
तेऽक्षाणुकेऽणुरूपात्मा तदा तत्रैव विन्दति ॥ ८ ॥

When the individual soul (jīva) is internally pervaded by the humor of phlegm, then it, whose nature is atomic, perceives precisely in those minute sense-units.
क्षीरार्णव इवोड्डीनो नभश्चन्द्रोदयान्वितम् ।
सरांसि फुल्लपद्मानि कह्लारवलितानि च ॥ ९ ॥

The sky, expansive as if it had arisen from the milky ocean, was graced by the rising moon. And the lakes were adorned with blooming lotuses and encircled by white water lilies.
पुष्पाभ्रप्रतिधानानि परिगीतानि षट्पदैः ।
वसन्तान्तःपुराण्यन्तरुद्यानान्युदितानि खे ॥ १० ॥

The inner chambers (antaḥpura) of spring and its inner gardens appeared prominently in the air, having canopies of flower-clouds and filled with the humming of bees (ṣaṭpadaiḥ).
उत्सवान्मङ्गलाकीर्णांल्लीलालोलाङ्गनागणान् ।
भक्ष्यभोज्यान्नपानश्रीपरिपूर्णगृहाजिरान् ॥ ११ ॥

Places were festive and filled with auspiciousness, graced by groups of playful women. Their house courtyards overflowed with the abundance of various foods, beverages, and delicacies.

विलासेनाम्बुधिं यान्ति सरितो मत्तयौवनाः ॥ १२ ॥

Rivers, in the prime of their youth, flow towards the ocean with playful grace. They appear adorned with flowers, their foam like laughter, and their sparkling, restless currents are like dancing eyes.

The palaces were exceedingly cool, with white peaks resembling snowy mountains, their walls plastered and whitewashed as if fashioned by the very moonlight.

And also places covered by the clouds of the dewy, shower-filled, winter, and rainy seasons; and lands abundant with blue lotus creepers and green meadows.

The garden grounds of the city were covered with an abundance of flowers, providing rest for weary deer and travelers, and offering shade from trees with glossy leaves.

The flower gardens, with their shining arrangements of seats and spaces, gleamed with the radiance of moonlight and the nectar of Kadamba, Kunda, and Mandara flowers.

The rows of groves, dark blue and abundant with lotus beds, bearing patches of flowers, were tender like the pure sky where clouds have dissolved.

And the mountain ranges, crowned with plantain sprouts, jasmine, and kadamba flowers, were delicate with their charming, playfully moving young leaves.

They appeared like slender-bodied young women performing a dance, with their gracefully swaying braids releasing jasmine garlands.

The king's assembly halls were like fully bloomed white lotuses, surrounded by hundreds of charming yak-tail whisks, golden water pots, and canopies.

When the inner living being (jīva) is permeated by the fluid (rasa) whose intrinsic nature (ātman) is that of "pitta", then the vital essence (ojas), which is itself an internal, atomic-sized self (ātman), manifests right there.

Appearing splendid with "kiṃśuka" trees withered by the wind's movement, and whose masses of flames are as delicate as the bright petals and tender sprouts of lotuses.

The lands whose river-channels (sarit-śirāḥ) appear like quickly evaporating streaks of mist (sanīhāra) on scorching hot sand (saṃtapta-sikatā-āseka), and whose horizons (dik-mukha) are darkened (śyāmala) by the blackish smoke (śyāma-dhūma) from forest fire (dāvānala) flames (śikhā).

(The lands whose) suns (anarka) are as harsh (karkaśa) as fire (kṛśānu), whose rays (tviṣ) are sharpened (āśita) like the edge (dhārā) of a discus (cakra), and whose sources of moisture (rasākara) are reversed (viparīta), as if infused with the poison (viṣa-āveśa) of a conflagration (dāva-dāha).

(The lands where) sweat (sveda) has heated (uṣṇīkṛta) the ocean (abdhi), or as if the entire sphere of the three worlds (trailokya-maṇḍala) has perspired (svinna); and whose forests (araṇyāni) and even impenetrable thickets (gahana) are flowing (kṣarat) with salty residues (kṣāra) and appear scorched by fire (pratarda).

And lands (sthala) where one traverses (prataran) mirage-water (mṛgatṛṣṇāmbu) that resembles flowing cranes (sārarūpi) or flowing bodies of water (sarat), lands never seen before (adṛṣṭapūrva), and lands where trees (taru) once stood (bhūtapūrva).

One experiences one's self (ātman) flying upwards, as if rocks and mountain regions were also flying. There are also deep humming and buzzing sounds, and the turning of objects without wheels, and other similar phenomena.

Made formidable by indistinct, overwhelming clouds (that appear) amidst the swaying forest formations, and where all directions are continuously filled with (the presence of) lions, elephants, rain, and clouds.

Agitated by rows of burning fan palms, tamala trees, and date palms, it resounded with humming, deep roars from caves, and the booming, dense rattling sounds (of thunder).

It appears, illuminating the three worlds, as if with deep, crushing sounds and cruel cries that have arisen from the violent rending of mighty warriors of the past.

Thus, when the individual soul (jīva) is rendered inert and stupefied, it remains verily tormented, surrounded by those warriors composed of wood, stone, earth, and unified wind.

Being devoid of the vibration of vital breath (prāṇa) and air due to the impossibility of acquiring any internal space, one is threatened by a mass of protruding ribs, which feels like a collection of rocks.

Then, one experiences this state of deep sleep by oneself, as if within an intensely dense light; it resembles a rock-cave and is like the interior of a dark well.

When the [yogic] effort has matured, and space is again attained, then the individual soul (jīva), awakened by vital breath (prāṇa), once more experiences the dream state.

When, in that region (within oneself), these parts fall into further subdivisions internally, and, developing within the body, that very process is like an overwhelming downpour, as if of mountains.

One perceives much as great and little as small, corresponding to much or little 'fire' (vahni). Through the combination of vāta, pitta, and other humors (doṣas), one experiences confusion both externally and internally.

Just as this living being (jīva), controlled and agitated by vāta, pitta, and other humors (doṣas) internally, perceives this, so too does it understand (vetti) externally, or rather, it becomes (eti) that way.

When the humors (doṣas) are agitated (kṣubdhaiḥ) and diminished (svalpaiḥ) both internally and externally, one perceives little. Conversely, when the vāta, pitta, kapha, and other such factors are balanced (samaiḥ), this visible world (dṛśyam) is perceived as balanced.
बहिः पश्यत्ययं जीवः कुपितैरेभिरावृतः ।
स्पन्दं भूम्यद्रिनभसां ज्वलनं वानलोच्चयैः ॥ ६० ॥

This living being (jīva), enveloped by these aggravated (doṣas), perceives externally the vibration of the earth, mountains, and sky, or the burning caused by accumulated fires.

Indeed, these sense-activities (indriyavṛtti), while inwardly 'closed,' perceive things outwardly 'open.' Thus, due to the imbalance of the bodily constituents (dhātu), they experience delusion (bhrānti).

Just as there is a vibration in the wind, so is the perception of the visible (dṛśya) a vibration in the essence of consciousness (cittattva). This, though truly unreal (asat), always appears as real, being non-different yet existing as if divided.

All this universe, which possesses the essence of space, arises from the tranquil (śānta). However, the tranquil (śānta) itself is not any specific thing; it does not manifest as an 'existent' (sat) identified by a name. In that vast expanse (vyoman), which constitutes the body of the infinite consciousness (anantacit), this infinite form (anantavapus) shines forth merely as an all-pervading radiance.
