अथ सूर्याख्यरङ्गेण रञ्जिते भुवनोदरे ।
शिखिध्वजाङ्गना प्रातर्मदनी कुम्भतां ययौ ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, as the interior of the world was illuminated by the stage-like sun, Śikhidhvaja's wife, Madanī, in the morning, transformed into Kumbha.
एवं महेन्द्रदर्यां तावुभौ कुम्भशिखिध्वजौ ।
स्वयं विवाहिताविष्टौ संपन्नौ देवदंपती ॥ २ ॥
evaṃ mahendradaryāṃ tāvubhau kumbhaśikhidhvajau ,
svayaṃ vivāhitāviṣṭau saṃpannau devadaṃpatī 2
2. evam mahendradaryām tau ubhau kumbhaśikhidhvajau |
svayam vivāhitāviṣṭau sampannau devadampatī || 2 ||

2. Thus, in the cave of Mahendra mountain, those two, Kumbha and Śikhidhvaja, became a divine couple, having mutually entered into marriage.
विलेसतुर्विचित्रासु प्रत्यहं वनराजिषु ।
प्रपक्वफलभारासु पुष्पपल्लविनीषु च ॥ ३ ॥
vilesaturvicitrāsu pratyahaṃ vanarājiṣu ,
prapakvaphalabhārāsu puṣpapallavinīṣu ca 3
3. vilesatuḥ vicitrāsu pratyaham vanarājiṣu |
prapakvaphalabhārāsu puṣpapallavinīṣu ca || 3 ||

3. Daily, they roamed and sported in various beautiful forest groves, which were laden with ripe fruits and full of flowers and new shoots.
दिवा प्रीततरौ मित्रे यामिन्यामिष्टदंपती ।
प्रभादीपाविव श्लिष्टौ न वियुक्तौ बभूवतुः ॥ ४ ॥
divā prītatarau mitre yāminyāmiṣṭadaṃpatī ,
prabhādīpāviva śliṣṭau na viyuktau babhūvatuḥ 4
4. divā prītatarau mitre yāminyām iṣṭadampatī |
prabhādīpau iva śliṣṭau na viyuktau babhūvatuḥ || 4 ||

4. By day, they were most delighted friends, and by night, a beloved couple. Like a lamp and its flame, they remained intertwined, never separated.
रेमाते वनकुञ्जेषु गुहासु च महीभृताम् ।
तमालजालखण्डेषु मन्दारगहनेषु च ॥ ५ ॥
remāte vanakuñjeṣu guhāsu ca mahībhṛtām ,
tamālajālakhaṇḍeṣu mandāragahaneṣu ca 5

5. They (the king and queen) enjoyed themselves in forest groves, in the caves of mountains, among clusters of tamāla trees, and in thickets of mandāra flowers.
सह्यदर्दुरकैलासमहेन्द्रमलयेषु च ।
गन्धमादनविन्ध्याद्रिलोकालोकतटेषु च ॥ ६ ॥
sahyadardurakailāsamahendramalayeṣu ca ,
gandhamādanavindhyādrilokālokataṭeṣu ca 6
6. sahyadardurakailāsamahendramalayeṣu ca
gandhamādanavindhyādrilokālokataṭeṣu ca

6. And also on the Sahya, Dardura, Kailasa, Mahendra, and Malaya mountains; and on the slopes of the Gandhamadana, Vindhya, and Lokāloka mountains.
दिनैस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिर्गत्वा निद्रां गतवति प्रिये ।
चूडाला राजकार्याणि कृत्वा स्वभ्याययौ पुनः ॥ ७ ॥
dinaistribhistribhirgatvā nidrāṃ gatavati priye ,
cūḍālā rājakāryāṇi kṛtvā svabhyāyayau punaḥ 7
7. dinaiḥ tribhiḥ tribhiḥ gatvā nidrām gatavati
priye cūḍālā rājakāryāṇi kṛtvā svābhyāyayau punaḥ
7. priye dinaiḥ tribhiḥ tribhiḥ gatvā nidrām gatavati
cūḍālā rājakāryāṇi kṛtvā svābhyāyayau punaḥ
7. When her beloved (husband), having journeyed for three days at a time, fell asleep, Cūḍālā, after completing her royal duties, would again return to him.
तौ दिवा सुहृदौ मित्रे दंपती कुम्भभूमिपौ ।
नानाकुसुमसंवीतौ तस्थतुर्मुदितौ मिथः ॥ ८ ॥
tau divā suhṛdau mitre daṃpatī kumbhabhūmipau ,
nānākusumasaṃvītau tasthaturmuditau mithaḥ 8
8. tau divā suhṛdau mitre dampatī kumbhabhūmipau
nānākusumasaṃvītau tasthatuḥ muditau mithaḥ
8. tau dampatī kumbhabhūmipau suhṛdau mitre
nānākusumasaṃvītau muditau divā mithaḥ tasthatuḥ
8. During the day, those two – the royal couple (King Kumbha and his queen), who were friends and companions – would remain joyfully together, adorned with diverse flowers.
मासमेकं महेन्द्राद्रौ रम्ये सरलसंकुले ।
रत्नकुड्ये गुहागेहे पूजितौ सुरकिंनरैः ॥ ९ ॥
māsamekaṃ mahendrādrau ramye saralasaṃkule ,
ratnakuḍye guhāgehe pūjitau surakiṃnaraiḥ 9
9. māsam ekam mahendra-adrau ramye sarala-saṅkule
ratna-kuḍye guhā-gehe pūjitau sura-kiṃnaraiḥ
9. māsam ekam ramye sarala-saṅkule ratna-kuḍye
guhā-gehe mahendra-adrau sura-kiṃnaraiḥ pūjitau
9. For one month, on the delightful Mount Mahendra, which was dense with pine trees, and in a cave-house with jeweled walls, they were worshipped by gods and kinnaras.
हस्तलभ्योदितामोघमन्दारवनमालिते ।
एवं शुक्तिमतः पृष्ठे पक्षं कल्पलतागृहे ॥ १० ॥
hastalabhyoditāmoghamandāravanamālite ,
evaṃ śuktimataḥ pṛṣṭhe pakṣaṃ kalpalatāgṛhe 10
10. hasta-labhya-udita-amogha-mandāra-vana-mālite
evam śuktimataḥ pṛṣṭhe pakṣam kalpa-latā-gṛhe
10. evam pakṣam śuktimataḥ pṛṣṭhe
hastalabhyoditāmoghamandāravanamālite kalpalatāgṛhe
10. Similarly, for a fortnight, on the summit of Mount Śuktimat, in a house formed by wish-granting creepers (kalpalatā), which was adorned with groves of Mandara trees whose spontaneously blossomed, unfailing flowers were within reach of the hand.
मासद्वयं पक्षवतो गिरेर्दक्षिणदिक्तटे ।
पारिजातवने देवपुष्पस्तबकमण्डपे ॥ ११ ॥
māsadvayaṃ pakṣavato girerdakṣiṇadiktaṭe ,
pārijātavane devapuṣpastabakamaṇḍape 11
11. māsa-dvayam pakṣavataḥ gireḥ dakṣiṇa-dik-taṭe
pārijāta-vane deva-puṣpa-stabaka-maṇḍape
11. māsa-dvayam pakṣavataḥ gireḥ dakṣiṇa-dik-taṭe
pārijāta-vane deva-puṣpa-stabaka-maṇḍape
11. For two months, on the southern slope of Mount Pakṣavat, in a grove of Pārijāta trees, and in a pavilion adorned with bunches of divine flowers.
जम्बूखण्डतले मेरोः पादे जम्बूनदीतटे ।
जाम्बूनदमये मासं जम्बूफलरसासवैः ॥ १२ ॥
jambūkhaṇḍatale meroḥ pāde jambūnadītaṭe ,
jāmbūnadamaye māsaṃ jambūphalarasāsavaiḥ 12
12. jambū-khaṇḍa-tale meroḥ pāde jambū-nadī-taṭe
jāmbūnada-maye māsam jambū-phala-rasa-āsavaiḥ
12. māsam meroḥ pāde jambūkhaṇḍatale jambūnadītaṭe
jāmbūnadamaye jambūphalarasāsavaiḥ
12. For one month, at the foot of Mount Meru, at the base of the Jambu region, on the bank of the Jambū river, in a golden area, they were sustained or honored with the intoxicating juices of Jambu fruits.
दशोत्तरकुरूणां च मण्डले दिवसानि तौ ।
कोसलेषूत्तरस्थेषु सप्तविंशतिवासरान् ॥ १३ ॥
daśottarakurūṇāṃ ca maṇḍale divasāni tau ,
kosaleṣūttarastheṣu saptaviṃśativāsarān 13
13. daśottarakurūṇām ca maṇḍale divasāni tau
kosaleṣu uttarastheṣu saptaviṃśativāsarān
13. tau daśottarakurūṇām maṇḍale ca divasāni
uttarastheṣu kosaleṣu saptaviṃśativāsarān
13. And those two (Chudala and Shikhidhvaja) stayed for days in the region of the Daśottarakurus, and for twenty-seven days in the northern Kosala lands.
एवमन्येषु देशेषु विचित्रेषु महीभृताम् ।
स्थितवन्तौ महाभागौ सुहृदौ निशि दम्पती ॥ १४ ॥
evamanyeṣu deśeṣu vicitreṣu mahībhṛtām ,
sthitavantau mahābhāgau suhṛdau niśi dampatī 14
14. evam anyeṣu deśeṣu vicitreṣu mahībhṛtām
sthitavantau mahābhāgau suhṛdau niśi dampatī
14. evam mahābhāgau suhṛdau dampatī niśi anyeṣu
vicitreṣu mahībhṛtām deśeṣu sthitavantau
14. Thus, the great-souled, friendly married couple (Chudala and Shikhidhvaja) stayed at night in other diverse lands belonging to kings.
ततो यातेषु मासेषु शनैः कतिपयेषु सा ।
चूडाला चिन्तयामास देवपुत्रकरूपिणी ॥ १५ ॥
tato yāteṣu māseṣu śanaiḥ katipayeṣu sā ,
cūḍālā cintayāmāsa devaputrakarūpiṇī 15
15. tataḥ yāteṣu māseṣu śanaiḥ katipayeṣu
sā cūḍālā cintayāmāsa devaputrakarūpiṇī
15. tataḥ katipayeṣu māseṣu śanaiḥ yāteṣu
sā cūḍālā devaputrakarūpiṇī cintayāmāsa
15. Then, after some months had slowly passed, Chudala, who appeared like a celestial son, began to ponder.
सुरूपभोगभारेण परीक्षेऽहं शिखिध्वजम् ।
मा कदाचन चेतोऽस्य भोगेषु रतिमेष्यति ॥ १६ ॥
surūpabhogabhāreṇa parīkṣe'haṃ śikhidhvajam ,
mā kadācana ceto'sya bhogeṣu ratimeṣyati 16
16. surūpabhogabhāreṇa parīkṣe aham śikhidhvajam
mā kadācana cetaḥ asya bhogeṣu ratim eṣyati
16. aham surūpabhogabhāreṇa śikhidhvajam parīkṣe
mā kadācana asya cetaḥ bhogeṣu ratim eṣyati
16. I shall test Shikhidhvaja with the weight of beautiful sensual pleasures (bhoga), lest his mind (cetas) might ever find delight in these worldly enjoyments.
इति संचिन्त्य चूडाला मायया विपिनावनौ ।
आगतं दर्शयामास ससुराप्सरसं हरिम् ॥ १७ ॥
iti saṃcintya cūḍālā māyayā vipināvanau ,
āgataṃ darśayāmāsa sasurāpsarasaṃ harim 17
17. iti saṃcintya cūḍālā māyayā vipināvanau
āgataṃ darśayāmāsa sasurāpsarasaṃ harim
17. cūḍālā iti saṃcintya māyayā vipināvanau
sasurāpsarasaṃ āgataṃ harim darśayāmāsa
17. Having thus thoroughly pondered, Cūḍālā, by means of her illusion (māyā), made Hari (Indra) appear in the forest, accompanied by gods and celestial nymphs (apsarases), as if he had just arrived.
इन्द्रमभ्यागतं दृष्ट्वा परिवारसमन्वितम् ।
यथावत्पूजयामास वनसंस्थः शिखिध्वजः ॥ १८ ॥
indramabhyāgataṃ dṛṣṭvā parivārasamanvitam ,
yathāvatpūjayāmāsa vanasaṃsthaḥ śikhidhvajaḥ 18
18. indram abhyāgatam dṛṣṭvā parivārasamanvitam
yathāvat pūjayāmāsa vanasaṃsthaḥ śikhidhvajaḥ
18. vanasaṃsthaḥ śikhidhvajaḥ abhyāgatam
parivārasamanvitam indram dṛṣṭvā yathāvat pūjayāmāsa
18. Upon seeing Indra, who had arrived accompanied by his retinue, Śikhidhvaja, residing in the forest, worshipped him appropriately.
शिखिध्वज उवाच ।
आत्मना किं कृता दूरादभ्यागमकदर्थना ।
देवराज यथा तन्मे प्रसादाद्वक्तुमर्हसि ॥ १९ ॥
śikhidhvaja uvāca ,
ātmanā kiṃ kṛtā dūrādabhyāgamakadarthanā ,
devarāja yathā tanme prasādādvaktumarhasi 19
19. śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca | ātmanā kim kṛtā dūrāt abhyāgama-kadarthanā
| devarāja yathā tat me prasādāt vaktum arhasi
19. śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca devarāja,
ātmanā dūrāt abhyāgama-kadarthanā kim kṛtā ? yathā tat me prasādāt vaktum arhasi
19. Śikhidhvaja said: 'O king of gods (devarāja), why have you, yourself (ātman), undertaken the trouble of coming from afar? Please be gracious (prasāda) enough to tell me how this has come to be.'
इन्द्र उवाच ।
इमे वयमिहायातास्त्वद्गुणातिशयेन खात् ।
हृदि लग्नेन सूत्रेण खगा वनगता इव ॥ २० ॥
indra uvāca ,
ime vayamihāyātāstvadguṇātiśayena khāt ,
hṛdi lagnena sūtreṇa khagā vanagatā iva 20
20. indraḥ uvāca | ime vayam iha āyātāḥ tvadguṇātiśayena
khāt | hṛdi lagnena sūtreṇa khagāḥ vanagatāḥ iva
20. indraḥ uvāca vayam ime khāt iha āyātāḥ,
tvadguṇātiśayena,
hṛdi lagnena sūtreṇa vanagatāḥ khagāḥ iva
20. Indra said: 'We have arrived here from the sky (kha), drawn by the surpassing excellence of your qualities (guṇa), just as birds (khaga), even those gone to the forest, are drawn by a thread (sūtra) attached to their hearts.'
उत्तिष्ठ स्वर्गमागच्छ तत्र सर्वे त्वदुन्मुखाः ।
त्वद्गुणश्रवणाश्चर्याः स्थिता देवाङ्गनागणाः ॥ २१ ॥
uttiṣṭha svargamāgaccha tatra sarve tvadunmukhāḥ ,
tvadguṇaśravaṇāścaryāḥ sthitā devāṅganāgaṇāḥ 21
21. uttiṣṭha svargam āgaccha tatra sarve tvat unmukhāḥ
tvat guṇa śravaṇa āścaryāḥ sthitāḥ devāṅganāgaṇāḥ
21. uttiṣṭha svargam āgaccha tatra sarve devāṅganāgaṇāḥ
tvat unmukhāḥ tvat guṇa śravaṇa āścaryāḥ sthitāḥ
21. Rise up! Come to heaven, where all the groups of celestial maidens are present, eagerly awaiting you and astonished by hearing your qualities.
पादुकागुटिकाखङ्गरसादीदमथापि च ।
गृहीत्वा सिद्धमार्गेण स्वीकुरु स्वर्गमण्डलम् ॥ २२ ॥
pādukāguṭikākhaṅgarasādīdamathāpi ca ,
gṛhītvā siddhamārgeṇa svīkuru svargamaṇḍalam 22
22. pādukā guṭikā khaṅga rasa ādi idam atha api ca
gṛhītvā siddhamārgeṇa svīkuru svargamaṇḍalam
22. atha api ca idam pādukā guṭikā khaṅga rasa ādi
gṛhītvā siddhamārgeṇa svargamaṇḍalam svīkuru
22. And moreover, having taken these - sandals, pills, sword, mercury, and so on - by the path of the perfected ones (siddhas), take possession of the realm of heaven.
आगत्य विविधा भोगास्त्वया विबुधसद्मनि ।
जीवन्मुक्तेन भोक्तव्यास्तेन त्वामहमागतः ॥ २३ ॥
āgatya vividhā bhogāstvayā vibudhasadmani ,
jīvanmuktena bhoktavyāstena tvāmahamāgataḥ 23
23. āgatya vividhāḥ bhogāḥ tvayā vibudhasadmani
jīvanmuktena bhoktavyāḥ tena tvām aham āgataḥ
23. vibudhasadmani āgatya vividhāḥ bhogāḥ jīvanmuktena
tvayā bhoktavyāḥ tena aham tvām āgataḥ
23. Having arrived in the abode of the gods (heaven), various enjoyments are to be experienced by you, who are liberated while living (jīvanmukta). Therefore, I have come to you.
विमानयन्ति संप्राप्तां न तिरस्करणैः श्रियम् ।
नाभिवाञ्छन्ति न प्राप्तां त्वादृशाः साधु साधवः ॥ २४ ॥
vimānayanti saṃprāptāṃ na tiraskaraṇaiḥ śriyam ,
nābhivāñchanti na prāptāṃ tvādṛśāḥ sādhu sādhavaḥ 24
24. vimānayanti samprāptām na tiraskaraṇaiḥ śriyam na
abhivāñchanti na prāptām tvādṛśāḥ sādhu sādhavah
24. tvādṛśāḥ sādhu sādhavah samprāptām śriyam tiraskaraṇaiḥ
na vimānayanti na prāptām na abhivāñchanti
24. Those truly virtuous persons (sādhu) like you do not disregard glory (śrī) when it is attained with contempt, nor do they desire it when it is not attained.
अविघ्नमागतेनाद्य सुखं विहरता त्वया ।
स्वर्गः पवित्रतां यातु हरिणेव जगत्त्रयम् ॥ २५ ॥
avighnamāgatenādya sukhaṃ viharatā tvayā ,
svargaḥ pavitratāṃ yātu hariṇeva jagattrayam 25
25. avighnam āgatena adya sukham viharatā tvayā
svargaḥ pavitratām yātu hariṇā iva jagattrayam
25. adya avighnam sukham viharatā tvayā āgatena
svargaḥ pavitratām yātu hariṇā iva jagattrayam
25. Today, by your unimpeded arrival and blissful presence, may heaven attain purity, just as the three worlds are purified by Hari (Viṣṇu).
शिखिध्वज उवाच ।
सर्व स्वर्गसमाचारं वेद्मि देवाधिनायक ।
किंतु सर्वत्र मे स्वर्गो नियतो न तु कुत्रचित् ॥ २६ ॥
śikhidhvaja uvāca ,
sarva svargasamācāraṃ vedmi devādhināyaka ,
kiṃtu sarvatra me svargo niyato na tu kutracit 26
26. śikhidhvaja uvāca sarvam svargasamācāram vedmi devādhināyaka
kintu sarvatra me svargaḥ niyataḥ na tu kutracit
26. śikhidhvaja uvāca he devādhināyaka,
sarvam svargasamācāram vedmi.
kintu me svargaḥ sarvatra niyataḥ asti,
kutracit tu na.
26. Śikhidhvaja said: "O chief of gods, I know all the affairs of heaven. But my heaven is fixed everywhere, not in any specific place."
सर्वत्रैव हि तुष्यामि सर्वत्रैव रमे प्रभो ।
अवाञ्छनत्वान्मनसः सर्वत्रानन्दवानहम् ॥ २७ ॥
sarvatraiva hi tuṣyāmi sarvatraiva rame prabho ,
avāñchanatvānmanasaḥ sarvatrānandavānaham 27
27. sarvatra eva hi tuṣyāmi sarvatra eva rame prabho
avāñchanatvāt manasaḥ sarvatra ānandavān aham
27. prabho hi aham sarvatra eva tuṣyāmi,
sarvatra eva rame.
manasaḥ avāñchanatvāt aham sarvatra ānandavān (asmi).
27. O Lord, indeed I am content everywhere, and I rejoice everywhere. Because my mind has no desires, I am blissful everywhere.
नियतं किंचिदेकत्र स्थितं स्वर्गकमीदृशम् ।
शक्र गन्तुं न जानामि त्वदाज्ञां न करोम्यहम् ॥ २८ ॥
niyataṃ kiṃcidekatra sthitaṃ svargakamīdṛśam ,
śakra gantuṃ na jānāmi tvadājñāṃ na karomyaham 28
28. niyatam kiṃcit ekatra sthitam svargakam īdṛśam
śakra gantum na jānāmi tvat ājñām na karomi aham
28. śakra,
niyatam ekatra sthitam īdṛśam kiṃcit svargakam gantum aham na jānāmi.
tvat ājñām ca na karomi.
28. O Śakra, I do not know how to go to such a heaven that is fixed and located in one specific place. Nor do I carry out your command.
शक्र उवाच ।
साधो विदितवेद्यानां परिपूर्णधियां समम् ।
सज्जनाचरितं युक्तं मन्ये भोगोपसेवनम् ॥ २९ ॥
śakra uvāca ,
sādho viditavedyānāṃ paripūrṇadhiyāṃ samam ,
sajjanācaritaṃ yuktaṃ manye bhogopasevanam 29
29. śakra uvāca sādho viditavedyānām paripūrṇadhiyām
samam sajjanācaritam yuktam manye bhogopasevanam
29. śakra uvāca sādho manye bhogopasevanam yuktam
sajjanācaritam viditavedyānām paripūrṇadhiyām samam
29. Śakra said: O virtuous one, I believe that for those whose intellects are perfected and who have understood all that is to be known, the enjoyment of worldly pleasures is suitable, just as it is proper conduct for virtuous people.
देवेशे प्रोक्तवत्येवं तूष्णीमेव स्थिते नृपे ।
किमितो नापयाम्येष त्वमिति प्रोक्तवान् हरिः ॥ ३० ॥
deveśe proktavatyevaṃ tūṣṇīmeva sthite nṛpe ,
kimito nāpayāmyeṣa tvamiti proktavān hariḥ 30
30. deveśe proktavati evam tūṣṇīm eva sthite nṛpe
kim itaḥ na apayāmi eṣaḥ tvam iti proktavān hariḥ
30. deveśe proktavati evam nṛpe tūṣṇīm eva sthite
hariḥ proktavān kim itaḥ na apayāmi eṣaḥ tvam iti
30. When the lord of gods had spoken thus, and the king remained silent, Hari (Vishnu) then said, 'Why should I not depart from here? This (Self, ātman) is you!'
नाहमद्यैव कालेन वदतीति शिखिध्वजे ।
कल्याणं तेऽस्तु कुम्भेति वदन्नन्तर्धिमाययौ ॥ ३१ ॥
nāhamadyaiva kālena vadatīti śikhidhvaje ,
kalyāṇaṃ te'stu kumbheti vadannantardhimāyayau 31
31. na aham adya eva kālena vadati iti śikhidhvaje
kalyāṇam te astu kumbha iti vadan antardhim āyayau
31. śikhidhvaje vadati iti na aham adya eva kālena hariḥ
vadan kalyāṇam te astu kumbha iti antardhim āyayau
31. When it was declared to Śikhidhvaja, 'I am not bound by time today,' Hari, saying 'May there be welfare for you, O Kumbha!' then disappeared.
तद्देववृन्दमखिलं त्रिदशेशयुक्तं तत्र क्षणादलमदृश्यमभूद्द्वितीयम् ।
कल्लोलराशिरिव वारिनिधौ प्रशान्ते वाते स्फुरन्मकरफेनफणीन्द्रवृन्दम् ॥ ३२ ॥
taddevavṛndamakhilaṃ tridaśeśayuktaṃ tatra kṣaṇādalamadṛśyamabhūddvitīyam ,
kallolarāśiriva vārinidhau praśānte vāte sphuranmakaraphenaphaṇīndravṛndam 32
32. tat devavṛndam akhilam tridaśeśayuktam
tatra kṣaṇāt alam adṛśyam abhūt advitīyam
kallolarāśiḥ iva vārinidhau praśānte
vāte sphuratmakaraphenaphaṇīndravṛndam
32. tat akhilam devavṛndam tridaśeśayuktam tatra
kṣaṇāt alam adṛśyam abhūt advitīyam iva
vārinidhau praśānte vāte (sati) kallolarāśiḥ
sphuratmakaraphenaphaṇīndravṛndam (adṛśyam abhūt)
32. That entire assembly of gods, accompanied by the lord of the thirty (Indra), instantly became completely invisible there, leaving no trace. This was like the disappearance of the multitude of shimmering crocodiles, foam, and great serpents - which appear as a mass of waves - when the wind calms in a tranquil ocean.
