विवेकिनो विरक्ता ये विश्रान्ता ये परे पदे ।
तेषां तनुत्वमायान्ति लोभमोहादयोऽरयः ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
vivekino viraktā ye viśrāntā ye pare pade ,
teṣāṃ tanutvamāyānti lobhamohādayo'rayaḥ 1

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: For those who are discerning and dispassionate, and who are established in the supreme state, their enemies such as greed, delusion, and others diminish and become subtle.
न हृष्यन्ति न कुप्यन्ति नाविशन्त्याहरन्ति च ।
उद्विजन्तेऽपि नो लोकाल्लोकान्नोद्वेजयन्ति च ॥ २ ॥
na hṛṣyanti na kupyanti nāviśantyāharanti ca ,
udvijante'pi no lokāllokānnodvejayanti ca 2
2. na hṛṣyanti na kupyanti na āviśanti āharanti ca
udvijante api naḥ lokāt lokān na udvejayanti ca
2. te na hṛṣyanti na kupyanti na āviśanti ca na āharanti
api ca lokāt na udvijante lokān na udvejayanti
2. They neither rejoice nor become angry; they neither get involved (in worldly affairs) nor seize things. They are not agitated by people, nor do they agitate people.
न नास्तिक्यान्न चास्तिक्यात्कष्टानुष्ठानवैदिकाः ।
मनोज्ञमधुराचाराः प्रियपेशलवादिनः ॥ ३ ॥
na nāstikyānna cāstikyātkaṣṭānuṣṭhānavaidikāḥ ,
manojñamadhurācārāḥ priyapeśalavādinaḥ 3
3. na nāstikyāt na ca āstikyāt kaṣṭānuṣṭhānavedikāḥ
manojñamadhurācārāḥ priyapeśalavādinaḥ
3. na nāstikyāt na ca āstikyāt kaṣṭānuṣṭhānavedikāḥ;
manojñamadhurācārāḥ; priyapeśalavādinaḥ
3. They are not defined by either disbelief or excessive belief, nor do they engage in difficult Vedic rites. Their conduct is pleasing and sweet, and their speech is kind and charming.
सङ्गादाह्लादयन्त्यन्तः शशाङ्ककिरणा इव ।
विवेचितारः कार्याणां निर्णेतारः क्षणादपि ॥ ४ ॥
saṅgādāhlādayantyantaḥ śaśāṅkakiraṇā iva ,
vivecitāraḥ kāryāṇāṃ nirṇetāraḥ kṣaṇādapi 4
4. saṅgāt āhlādayanti antaḥ śaśāṅkakiraṇāḥ iva
vivecitāraḥ kāryāṇām nirṇetāraḥ kṣaṇāt api
4. saṅgāt antaḥ āhlādayanti śaśāṅkakiraṇāḥ iva;
kāryāṇām vivecitāraḥ; api kṣaṇāt nirṇetāraḥ
4. Through their association, they delight others inwardly, just like moonbeams. They are discerners of actions and can make decisions even in an instant.
अनुद्वेगकराचारा बान्धवा नागरा इव ।
बहिः सर्वसमाचारा अन्तः सर्वार्थशीतलाः ॥ ५ ॥
anudvegakarācārā bāndhavā nāgarā iva ,
bahiḥ sarvasamācārā antaḥ sarvārthaśītalāḥ 5
5. anudvegakarācārāḥ bāndhavāḥ nāgarāḥ iva
bahiḥ sarvasamācārāḥ antaḥ sarvārthaśītalāḥ
5. anudvegakarācārāḥ; bāndhavāḥ nāgarāḥ iva;
bahiḥ sarvasamācārāḥ; antaḥ sarvārthaśītalāḥ
5. Their conduct causes no distress; they are like relatives or urbane citizens. Outwardly, their conduct is uniform towards all, while inwardly, they are calm regarding all matters.
शास्त्रार्थरसिकास्तज्ज्ञा ज्ञातलोकपरावराः ।
हेयोपादेयवेत्तारो यथाप्राप्ताभिपातिनः ॥ ६ ॥
śāstrārtharasikāstajjñā jñātalokaparāvarāḥ ,
heyopādeyavettāro yathāprāptābhipātinaḥ 6
6. śāstrārtharasikāḥ tajjñāḥ jñātalokaparāvarāḥ
heyopādeyavettāraḥ yathāprāptābhipātinaḥ
6. śāstrārtharasikāḥ tajjñāḥ; jñātalokaparāvarāḥ;
heyopādeyavettāraḥ; yathāprāptābhipātinaḥ
6. They are experts who delight in the meaning of the scriptures, knowing the higher and lower aspects of the world. They understand what is to be rejected and what is to be accepted, and they adapt to circumstances as they arise.
विरुद्धकार्यविरता रसिका सज्जनस्थितौ ।
अनावरणसौगन्ध्यैः परास्पदसुखाशनैः ॥ ७ ॥
viruddhakāryaviratā rasikā sajjanasthitau ,
anāvaraṇasaugandhyaiḥ parāspadasukhāśanaiḥ 7
7. viruddhakāryaviratāḥ rasikāḥ sajjanasthitau
anāvaraṇasaugandhyaiḥ parāspadasukhāśanaiḥ
7. (Te) viruddhakāryaviratāḥ rasikāḥ sajjanasthitau anāvaraṇasaugandhyaiḥ parāspadasukhāśanaiḥ (bhavanti).
7. Abstaining from adverse actions, discerning, and established in the disposition of noble individuals, they possess the unhidden fragrance of virtues and partake in the joy of the supreme state.
पूजयन्त्यागतं फुल्ला भृङ्गं पद्मा इवार्थिनम् ।
आवर्जयन्ति जनतां जनतापापहारिणः ॥ ८ ॥
pūjayantyāgataṃ phullā bhṛṅgaṃ padmā ivārthinam ,
āvarjayanti janatāṃ janatāpāpahāriṇaḥ 8
8. pūjayanti āgatam phullāḥ bhṛṅgam padmāḥ iva
arthinam āvarjayanti janatām janatāpāpahāriṇaḥ
8. (Yathā) phullāḥ padmāḥ arthinam āgatam bhṛṅgam iva pūjayanti,
(tathā) janatāpāpahāriṇaḥ janatām āvarjayanti.
8. Just as blooming lotuses honor a bee that has arrived as a petitioner, so too do the removers of people's sins attract the populace.
शीतलास्पदवत्स्निग्धाः प्रावृषीव पयोधराः ।
भूभृद्भङ्गकरं धीरा देशभङ्गदमाकुलम् ॥ ९ ॥
śītalāspadavatsnigdhāḥ prāvṛṣīva payodharāḥ ,
bhūbhṛdbhaṅgakaraṃ dhīrā deśabhaṅgadamākulam 9
9. śītalāspadavat snigdhāḥ prāvṛṣi iva payodharāḥ
bhūbhṛtbhaṅgakaram dhīrāḥ deśabhaṅgadam ākulam
9. dhīrāḥ snigdhāḥ śītalāspadavat prāvṛṣi payodharāḥ iva (bhavanti).
bhūbhṛtbhaṅgakaram deśabhaṅgadam ākulam (śatrum) (te pratirodhayanti).
9. Comforting like cool refuges, like rain-clouds in the rainy season, these steadfast ones (dhīrāḥ) withstand the agitated (threat) that brings about the downfall of rulers and the devastation of the country.
रोधयन्त्यागतं क्षोभं भूकम्पमिव पर्वताः ।
उत्साहयन्ति विपदि सुखयन्ति च संपदि ॥ १० ॥
rodhayantyāgataṃ kṣobhaṃ bhūkampamiva parvatāḥ ,
utsāhayanti vipadi sukhayanti ca saṃpadi 10
10. rodhayanti āgatam kṣobham bhūkampam iva parvatāḥ
utsāhayanti vipadi sukhayanti ca sampadi
10. (Te) parvatāḥ iva āgatam bhūkampam (ca) kṣobham rodhayanti.
(Te) vipadi utsāhayanti ca sampadi sukhayanti.
10. Just as mountains obstruct an approaching earthquake, so too do they prevent the coming agitation. They encourage (others) in adversity and bring comfort in prosperity.
चन्द्रबिम्बोपमाकारा दारा इव गुणाकराः ।
यशःपुष्पामलदिशो भाविसत्फलहेतवः ॥ ११ ॥
candrabimbopamākārā dārā iva guṇākarāḥ ,
yaśaḥpuṣpāmaladiśo bhāvisatphalahetavaḥ 11
11. candra-bimba-upamā-ākārāḥ dārāḥ iva guṇa-ākarāḥ
yaśaḥ-puṣpa-amala-diśaḥ bhāvi-sat-phala-hetavaḥ
11. dārāḥ candra-bimba-upamā-ākārāḥ guṇa-ākarāḥ iva
yaśaḥ-puṣpa-amala-diśaḥ bhāvi-sat-phala-hetavaḥ
11. Wives (dārāḥ) are beautiful like the orb of the moon in their appearance, and they are like mines of good qualities. Their immaculate fame spreads in all directions like flowers, and they are the causes of auspicious results in the future.
पुंस्कोकिलसमालापा माधवा इव साधवः ।
कल्लोलबहुलावर्तं व्यामोहमकरालयम् ॥ १२ ॥
puṃskokilasamālāpā mādhavā iva sādhavaḥ ,
kallolabahulāvartaṃ vyāmohamakarālayam 12
12. puṃskokila-samālāpāḥ mādhavāḥ iva sādhavaḥ
kallola-bahula-āvartam vyāmoha-makara-ālayam
12. sādhavaḥ puṃskokila-samālāpāḥ mādhavāḥ iva
kallola-bahula-āvartam vyāmoha-makara-ālayam
12. Virtuous persons (sādhavaḥ) have speech as pleasant as that of male cuckoos, and they are like the spring season (mādhava). (There is also) this (great ocean of others' minds) which is full of countless waves and whirlpools, and is an abode for the crocodiles of delusion (vyāmoha).
लुठन्तमिव हेमन्तं लोडयन्तं जनास्पदम् ।
वीचिविक्षोभचपलं परचित्तमहार्णवम् ॥ १३ ॥
luṭhantamiva hemantaṃ loḍayantaṃ janāspadam ,
vīcivikṣobhacapalaṃ paracittamahārṇavam 13
13. luṭhantam iva hemantam loḍayantam jana-āspadam
vīci-vikṣobha-capalam para-citta-mahā-arṇavam
13. para-citta-mahā-arṇavam
kallola-bahula-āvartam vyāmoha-makara-ālayam
hemantam iva luṭhantam jana-āspadam
loḍayantam vīci-vikṣobha-capalam
13. This great ocean of others' minds (paracittamahārṇavam) is like the rolling winter (hemanta), churning the abodes of people, and is fickle due to the turbulence of its waves.
तच्च रोधयितुं शक्तास्तटस्थाः साधुपर्वताः ।
आपत्सु बुद्धिनाशेषु कल्लोलेष्वाकुलेषु च ॥ १४ ॥
tacca rodhayituṃ śaktāstaṭasthāḥ sādhuparvatāḥ ,
āpatsu buddhināśeṣu kalloleṣvākuleṣu ca 14
14. tat ca rodhayitum śaktāḥ taṭasthāḥ sādhu-parvatāḥ
āpatsu buddhi-nāśeṣu kalloleṣu ākuleṣu ca
14. sādhu-parvatāḥ taṭasthāḥ ca tat rodhayitum
śaktāḥ āpatsu buddhi-nāśeṣu ākuleṣu kalloleṣu ca
14. And only virtuous people, who are like steadfast mountains (sādhu-parvatāḥ) standing on the shore, are capable of checking that (great ocean of others' minds) during adversities, in moments of intellectual confusion, and when tumultuous waves (of problems) become agitated.
संकटेषु दुरन्तेषु सन्त एव गतिः सताम् ।
एभिश्चिह्नैरथान्यैश्च ज्ञात्वा तानुचिताशयान् ॥ १५ ॥
saṃkaṭeṣu duranteṣu santa eva gatiḥ satām ,
ebhiścihnairathānyaiśca jñātvā tānucitāśayān 15
15. saṃkaṭeṣu duranteṣu santa eva gatiḥ satām ebhiḥ
cihnaiḥ atha anyaiḥ ca jñātvā tān ucitāśayān
15. saṃkaṭeṣu duranteṣu satām santa eva gatiḥ ebhiḥ
atha anyaiḥ ca cihnaiḥ tān ucitāśayān jñātvā
15. When faced with dire and endless calamities, truly the virtuous (santa) are the only refuge for those who are good. After recognizing them - by these and other signs - as having proper intentions...
आश्रयेतैकविश्रान्त्यै श्रान्तः संसारवर्त्मना ।
यस्मादत्यन्तविषमः संसारोरगसागरः ॥ १६ ॥
āśrayetaikaviśrāntyai śrāntaḥ saṃsāravartmanā ,
yasmādatyantaviṣamaḥ saṃsāroragasāgaraḥ 16
16. āśrayeta ekaviśrāntyai śrāntaḥ saṃsāravarthmanā
yasmāt atyantaviṣamaḥ saṃsāroragasāgaraḥ
16. saṃsāravarthmanā śrāntaḥ ekaviśrāntyai āśrayeta
yasmāt saṃsāroragasāgaraḥ atyantaviṣamaḥ
16. A person weary from the path of saṃsāra (the cycle of birth and death) should take refuge for ultimate repose, because this ocean of saṃsāra, which is like a serpent, is exceedingly formidable.
विना सत्सङ्गमन्येन पोतकेन न तीर्यते ।
आस्तां किं मे विचारेण यद्भवेदस्तु तन्मम ॥ १७ ॥
vinā satsaṅgamanyena potakena na tīryate ,
āstāṃ kiṃ me vicāreṇa yadbhavedastu tanmama 17
17. vinā satsaṅgam anyena potakena na tīryate
āstām kim me vicāreṇa yat bhavet astu tat mama
17. satsaṅgam vinā anyena potakena na tīryate me
vicāreṇa kim āstām yat bhavet tat mama astu
17. Without the association with the virtuous (satsaṅga), this [ocean of saṃsāra] cannot be crossed by any other means or "boat". What is the use of my deliberation? Whatever is destined to happen, let that happen to me.
इत्यन्तः कल्कमासाद्य न स्थेयं गर्तकीटवत् ।
एकोऽपि विद्यते यस्य गुणस्तं सर्वमुत्सृजन् ॥ १८ ॥
ityantaḥ kalkamāsādya na stheyaṃ gartakīṭavat ,
eko'pi vidyate yasya guṇastaṃ sarvamutsṛjan 18
18. iti antaḥ kalkam āsādya na stheyam gartakīṭavat
ekaḥ api vidyate yasya guṇaḥ tam sarvam utsṛjan
18. iti antaḥ kalkam āsādya gartakīṭavat na stheyam
yasya ekaḥ api guṇaḥ vidyate tam sarvam utsṛjan
18. Having resorted to such inner defilement (kalka), one should not remain like a worm in a pit. Instead, [one should consider/approach] that person in whom even a single virtue (guṇa) exists, abandoning everything else.
अनादृतान्यतद्दोषं तावन्मात्रं समाश्रयेत् ।
गुणान्दोषांश्च विज्ञातुमाबाल्यात्स्वप्रयत्नतः ॥ १९ ॥
anādṛtānyataddoṣaṃ tāvanmātraṃ samāśrayet ,
guṇāndoṣāṃśca vijñātumābālyātsvaprayatnataḥ 19
19. anādṛtānyataddoṣam tāvanmātram samāśrayet
guṇān doṣān ca vijñātum ābālyāt svaprayatnataḥ
19. ābālyāt svaprayatnataḥ guṇān ca doṣān vijñātum
anādṛtānyataddoṣam tāvanmātram samāśrayet
19. To discern qualities and faults from childhood through one's own effort, one should embrace only that approach which disregards the flaws of others.
यथासंभवसत्सङ्गशास्त्रैः प्राग्धियमेधयेत् ।
दोषलेशमनादृत्य नित्यं सेवेत सज्जनम् ॥ २० ॥
yathāsaṃbhavasatsaṅgaśāstraiḥ prāgdhiyamedhayet ,
doṣaleśamanādṛtya nityaṃ seveta sajjanam 20
20. yathāsaṃbhavasatsaṅgaśāstraiḥ prāk dhiyam
edhayet doṣaleśam anādṛtya nityam sevet sajjanam
20. yathāsaṃbhavasatsaṅgaśāstraiḥ prāk dhiyam
edhayet doṣaleśam anādṛtya nityam sajjanam sevet
20. As far as possible, one should cultivate one's intellect (dhi) by means of association with good people (satsaṅga) and scriptures. Disregarding even a trace of fault, one should constantly associate with good persons.
स्थूलदोषं त्वनिर्वाणं शनैः परिहरेत्क्रमात् ।
याति रम्यमरम्यत्वं स्थिरमस्थिरतामपि ॥ २१ ॥
sthūladoṣaṃ tvanirvāṇaṃ śanaiḥ pariharetkramāt ,
yāti ramyamaramyatvaṃ sthiramasthiratāmapi 21
21. sthūladoṣam tu anirvāṇam śanaiḥ pariharet kramāt
yāti ramyam aramyatvam sthiram asthiratām api
21. tu sthūladoṣam anirvāṇam śanaiḥ kramāt pariharet
ramyam aramyatvam yāti sthiram api asthiratām
21. But one should gradually avoid a gross, unextinguished (anirvāṇa) fault. For the beautiful becomes unpleasant, and the stable even unstable.
यथा दृष्टं तथा मन्ये याति साधुरसाधुताम् ।
एष सोऽत्यन्त उत्पातो यः साधुर्याति दुष्टताम् ॥ २२ ॥
yathā dṛṣṭaṃ tathā manye yāti sādhurasādhutām ,
eṣa so'tyanta utpāto yaḥ sādhuryāti duṣṭatām 22
22. yathā dṛṣṭam tathā manye yāti sādhuḥ asādhutām
eṣaḥ saḥ atyantaḥ utpātaḥ yaḥ sādhuḥ yāti duṣṭatām
22. yathā dṛṣṭam tathā manye sādhuḥ asādhutām yāti
eṣaḥ saḥ atyantaḥ utpātaḥ yaḥ sādhuḥ duṣṭatām yāti
22. As has been seen, so I believe, a good person becomes unvirtuous. This is indeed an extreme calamity (utpāta), that a good person becomes wicked.
देशकालवशात्पापैर्महोत्पातोऽपि दृश्यते ।
सर्वकर्माणि संत्यज्य कुर्यात्सज्जनसंगमम् ।
एतत्कर्म निराबाधं लोकद्वितयसाधनम् ॥ २३ ॥
deśakālavaśātpāpairmahotpāto'pi dṛśyate ,
sarvakarmāṇi saṃtyajya kuryātsajjanasaṃgamam ,
etatkarma nirābādhaṃ lokadvitayasādhanam 23
23. deśakālavaśāt pāpaiḥ mahotpātaḥ
api dṛśyate sarvakarmāṇi saṃtyajya
kuryāt sajjanasaṅgamam etat
karma nirābādham lokadvitayasādhanam
23. deśakālavaśāt pāpaiḥ mahotpātaḥ
api dṛśyate sarvakarmāṇi saṃtyajya
sajjanasaṅgamam kuryāt etat
karma nirābādham lokadvitayasādhanam
23. Great calamities, born of evil (karma), are observed depending on time and place. Therefore, abandoning all other actions (karma), one should cultivate the association of virtuous people. This particular action (karma) is unobstructed and leads to the attainment of both worlds.
न सज्जनाद्दूरतरः क्वचिद्भवेद्भजेत साधून्विनयक्रियान्वितः ।
स्पृशन्त्ययत्नेन हि तत्समीपगं विसारिणस्तद्गतपुष्परेणवः ॥ २४ ॥
na sajjanāddūrataraḥ kvacidbhavedbhajeta sādhūnvinayakriyānvitaḥ ,
spṛśantyayatnena hi tatsamīpagaṃ visāriṇastadgatapuṣpareṇavaḥ 24
24. na sajjanāt dūrataraḥ kvacit bhavet
bhajeta sādhūn vinayakriyānvitaḥ
spṛśanti ayatnena hi tatsamīpagaṃ
visāriṇaḥ tadgatapuṣpareṇavaḥ
24. sajjanāt dūrataraḥ kvacit na bhavet
vinayakriyānvitaḥ sādhūn bhajeta
hi visāriṇaḥ tadgatapuṣpareṇavaḥ
ayatnena tatsamīpagaṃ spṛśanti
24. One should never be far from virtuous people. Rather, with humility and right conduct, one should associate with the wise. For just as the spreading pollen from flowers near them effortlessly touches those who come into their proximity, so too does their positive influence spread.
