पश्याद्रिसानाविव बिम्बितं स्वं पुरःसरो मारपुरःसरो यः ।

(tasya) svam adrisānāu iva bimbitaṃ kahlarapadmotpalajālanālalaladvicitrāravapakṣivītam (ca asti)
1. The companions said: Behold! (O King), your own reflection, (you) who are a forerunner, (and) who are preceded by the god of love (Māra), is mirrored as if on mountain slopes! It is surrounded by birds making charming, varied sounds amidst the stalks of red water lilies (kahlāra), lotuses (padma), and white water lilies (utpala).
विकासितोद्दण्डसहस्रपत्रकोशस्थलस्थोद्धृरराजहंसम् ।
पीठद्विरेफद्विजलोकजुष्टं भुवीव गेहं कमलासनस्य ॥ २ ॥

2. ... (This reflection is also) featuring lordly swans (rājahamsa) standing in the spaces of fully blossomed, long-stalked lotuses, frequented by swarms of bees (dvirepha) and birds (dvija), like the very abode of Brahmā (Kamalāsana) on earth.
आकीर्णसीकरकरालदिगन्तराले फुल्लोत्पलाब्जपटलोदररेणुगौरम् ।

(This reflection is also) whitish-yellow like the pollen inside clusters of blossoming blue water lilies (utpala) and lotuses (abja), amidst directions made formidable by scattered sprays of water, sung with songs by intoxicated bees and birds (dvija), resembling a canopy (vitānaka) moving in the sky.
क्वचित्तरत्तारतरङ्गभङ्गं क्वचिद्विषद्भूरिविराविभृङ्गम् ।
क्वचिद्गभीरामलवारिसुप्तं क्वचित्सरोजोज्ज्वलपुष्पगुप्तम् ॥ ४ ॥

4. At one place, where bright, surging waves are breaking; at another, where many humming bees are pervading; at still another, where deep, clear waters lie tranquil; and elsewhere, where it is concealed by resplendent lotus blossoms.
कणाणुमुक्ताजलतापटालं तीरेषु सिंहे सुलतासुटालम् ।
तरङ्गनिर्धूतशिलोग्रकच्छं महीतलाकाशमनन्तकच्छम् ॥ ५ ॥

5. Adorned with a curtain of minute pearl-like water droplets; on its banks, among lions (or majestic features), with beautiful creepers and thickets; its formidable shores are scoured by waves bearing stones; its expanse resembles the surface of the earth, possessing endless banks.
तडित्प्रकाशोदरमस्यमेघनुन्नालजातोत्थरजःप्रभाभिः ।
पृषद्भरध्वान्तमयैकदेशं संध्याम्बराभोगमिवाप्रकाशम् ॥ ६ ॥

6. Its interior is bright with lightning. Its appearance is further enhanced by the glimmers of dust-like particles (pollen or mist) that have arisen from water-born elements and are stirred by clouds. One part of it is made dark by abundant raindrops. Thus, it appears like the unlit expanse of the evening sky.
वातावकीर्णशरदम्बुदखण्डखण्डं व्योमेव केवलसमीरणमावृताङ्गम् ।
हसैर्लसद्विसलताकवलालसांसैः कालेन संचयकृतैरिव चन्द्रबिम्बैः ॥ ७ ॥

7. Whose body, like the sky, is entirely enveloped by wind, resembling scattered fragments of autumn clouds. With shoulders gleaming, longing for mouthfuls of lotus-stalk fibers, like moon-discs accumulated over time.
आमोदमन्दमकरन्दकरालवातव्याधूतपङ्कपुटपाटनपाटवेन ।
उद्यन्महापटपटा वयतीव लेखा क्षुभ्यत्खगाश्रितलतोज्झितपुष्पवर्षम् ॥ ८ ॥

8. A streak [of pollen or nectar], by the dexterity of causing lotus buds to burst open - buds that are agitated by a strong wind, fragrant with gentle nectar - spreads, as if with a great rising rustling sound, a shower of flowers scattered from creepers where agitated birds reside.
वेल्लन्महाकमलपल्लवतालवृन्तसंवीजितं वलितचामरचारुफेनम् ।
राजायमानमलिकोकिलगीतगीतं सहृत्तपङ्कजलताललिताङ्गनौघम् ॥ ९ ॥

9. Appearing like a king, [this lake is] fanned by the swaying great lotus leaves acting as palm-leaf fans, with beautiful foam like waving yak-tail whisks, with songs sung by bees and cuckoos, and graced by a multitude of graceful women like charming lotus creepers.
भृङ्गाग्रभाजनमनोहरहारिगीतं राजीवरेणुरणकीर्णपिशङ्गतोयम् ।
डिण्डीरपिण्डपरिपाण्डुरपुण्डरीकखण्डोपमण्डिततटोपवनावतंसम् ॥ १० ॥

10. [This lake is also] with delightful and charming songs from the foremost gathering of bees, with yellowish water stirred and scattered with lotus pollen, and whose shore-side groves are adorned like crests by clusters of very white lotuses, pale like masses of foam.
विविक्तहृदयाम्भोजं हृदयाह्लादनं परम् ।
रसवत्स्वादु भातीदं सरः सत्संगमोपमम् ॥ ११ ॥
viviktahṛdayāmbhojaṃ hṛdayāhlādanaṃ param ,
rasavatsvādu bhātīdaṃ saraḥ satsaṃgamopamam 11
11. viviktahṛdayāmbhojam hṛdayāhlādanam param
rasavat svādu bhāti idam saraḥ satsaṅgamopamam
11. idam saraḥ viviktahṛdayāmbhojam hṛdayāhlādanam
param rasavat svādu satsaṅgamopamam bhāti
11. This lake (saras), with its lotuses like pure hearts, delighting the heart, supreme, full of essence (rasa) and sweet, appears splendidly, comparable to the association of virtuous people (satsaṅgama).
बिम्बितेन मरुव्योम्ना भातीदं सौम्य निर्मलम् ।
शास्त्रार्थपरिणामेन महतामिव मानसम् ॥ १२ ॥
bimbitena maruvyomnā bhātīdaṃ saumya nirmalam ,
śāstrārthapariṇāmena mahatāmiva mānasam 12
12. bimbītena maruvyomnā bhāti idam saumya nirmalam
śāstrārthapariṇāmena mahatām iva mānasam
12. saumya idam nirmalam maruvyomnā bimbītena
bhāti iva mahatām śāstrārthapariṇāmena mānasam
12. O gentle one, this pure (lake) shines, reflecting the vast sky, just like the pure mind of great individuals, which is transformed by the profound understanding of scriptural meanings.
किंचिल्लक्ष्यमपश्यामं पृषत्परुषमारुतम् ।
हिमाभ्रमिव भातीदं सरः सरससारसम् ॥ १३ ॥
kiṃcillakṣyamapaśyāmaṃ pṛṣatparuṣamārutam ,
himābhramiva bhātīdaṃ saraḥ sarasasārasam 13
13. kiñcit lakṣyam apaśyāmam pṛṣat paruṣamārutam
himābhram iva bhāti idam saraḥ sarasasārasam
13. sarasasārasam idam saraḥ kiñcit lakṣyam
apaśyāmam pṛṣat paruṣamārutam iva himābhram bhāti
13. This lake, graced with lively cranes, shines like a snow cloud, appearing barely touched by the harsh, speckled wind, as if unperceiving its presence.
यथेदं ब्रह्मणो दृश्यमविकारादि नेतरत् ।
यथाम्भसि तरङ्गादि राजन्पृथगिव स्थितम् ॥ १४ ॥
yathedaṃ brahmaṇo dṛśyamavikārādi netarat ,
yathāmbhasi taraṅgādi rājanpṛthagiva sthitam 14
14. yathā idam brahmaṇaḥ dṛśyam avikārādi na itarat
yathā ambhasi taraṅgādi rājan pṛthak iva sthitam
14. rājan yathā idam dṛśyam avikārādi brahmaṇaḥ na
itarat yathā taraṅgādi ambhasi pṛthak iva sthitam
14. O king, just as this phenomenal world is not distinct from (brahman), the unchanging and beginningless ultimate reality (brahman), similarly, waves and such appear to exist as if separate in water.
कूपवापीसरोब्धीनां दृश्यते यादृगन्तरम् ।
नारीपुरुषतोयानां विज्ञेयं तादृगन्तरम् ॥ १६ ॥
kūpavāpīsarobdhīnāṃ dṛśyate yādṛgantaram ,
nārīpuruṣatoyānāṃ vijñeyaṃ tādṛgantaram 16
16. kūpavāpīsarobdhīnām dṛśyate yādṛk antaram
nārīpuruṣatoyānām vijñeyam tādṛk antaram
16. kūpavāpīsarobdhīnām yādṛk antaram dṛśyate
tādṛk antaram nārīpuruṣatoyānām vijñeyam
16. Whatever difference is observed among wells, stepwells, lakes, and oceans, a similar difference should be understood among women, men (puruṣa), and various waters.
जन्तोरिवास्य मनसो जलजातिबन्धजीर्णस्य जर्जरदशालहरीभ्रमेण ।
आवर्तवृत्तिवलितान्यतिसंततानि को नाम संकलयितुं कमलानि शक्तः ॥ १७ ॥
jantorivāsya manaso jalajātibandhajīrṇasya jarjaradaśālaharībhrameṇa ,
āvartavṛttivalitānyatisaṃtatāni ko nāma saṃkalayituṃ kamalāni śaktaḥ 17
17. jantoḥ iva asya manasaḥ jalajāti-bandha-jīrṇasya
jarjara-daśā-laharī-bhramena
āvarta-vṛtti-valitāni ati-saṃtatāni
kaḥ nāma saṅkalayitum kamalāni śaktaḥ
17. asya jantoḥ jalajāti-bandha-jīrṇasya jarjara-daśā-laharī-bhramena manasaḥ iva,
āvarta-vṛtti-valitāni ati-saṃtatāni kamalāni saṅkalayitum kaḥ nāma śaktaḥ
17. Just as it is with the mind of this creature, worn out by its entanglement with aquatic existence, and confused by the turbulent waves of its decaying state, who indeed is capable of counting the innumerable lotuses that are extensively spread out and twisted into a swirling pattern?
चित्रं विजृम्भितमहो जडसंगमस्य पद्मोपि यन्निजगुणानगुणानिवैषः ।
अन्तः प्रगोपयति कण्ठतले निवेश्य सर्वस्य दर्शयति दुर्भगकण्टकौघम् ॥ १८ ॥
citraṃ vijṛmbhitamaho jaḍasaṃgamasya padmopi yannijaguṇānaguṇānivaiṣaḥ ,
antaḥ pragopayati kaṇṭhatale niveśya sarvasya darśayati durbhagakaṇṭakaugham 18
18. citram vijṛmbhitam aho jaḍa-saṅgamasya
padmaḥ api yat nija-guṇān aguṇān iva eṣaḥ
antaḥ pragopayati kaṇṭha-tale niveśya
sarvasya darśayati durbhaga-kaṇṭakaugham
18. aho,
jaḍa-saṅgamasya citram vijṛmbhitam yat eṣaḥ padmaḥ api nija-guṇān aguṇān iva kaṇṭha-tale niveśya antaḥ pragopayati (ca) sarvasya durbhaga-kaṇṭakaugham darśayati.
18. Oh, what a strange display is this association with the inert! Even the lotus, this one, hides its own good qualities within, as if they were flaws, by placing them at the base of its stem, and instead shows everyone a multitude of wretched thorns.
सच्छिद्रैरदृढैः सूक्ष्मैर्गोपितैर्जाड्यसंयुतैः ।
अनल्पैरपि निःसारैः पद्मस्येव गुणैरलम् ॥ १९ ॥
sacchidrairadṛḍhaiḥ sūkṣmairgopitairjāḍyasaṃyutaiḥ ,
analpairapi niḥsāraiḥ padmasyeva guṇairalam 19
19. sa-cchidraiḥ adṛḍhaiḥ sūkṣmaiḥ gopitaiḥ jāḍya-saṃyutaiḥ
analpaiḥ api niḥsāraiḥ padmasya iva guṇaiḥ alam
19. sa-cchidraiḥ,
adṛḍhaiḥ,
sūkṣmaiḥ,
gopitaiḥ,
jāḍya-saṃyutaiḥ,
analpaiḥ api niḥsāraiḥ padmasya iva guṇaiḥ alam.
19. Enough of qualities such as these – like those of a lotus – which are full of holes, infirm, subtle, concealed, imbued with dullness, and, despite being numerous, are utterly without substance.
महतां कुलपद्मानां गुणसौन्दर्यशालिनाम् ।
प्रभावं नास्ति संख्यातुं वासुकेरपि शक्तता ॥ २० ॥
mahatāṃ kulapadmānāṃ guṇasaundaryaśālinām ,
prabhāvaṃ nāsti saṃkhyātuṃ vāsukerapi śaktatā 20
20. mahatām kula-padmānām guṇa-saundarya-śālinām
prabhāvam na asti saṅkhyātum vāsukeḥ api śaktatā
20. mahatām guṇa-saundarya-śālinām kula-padmānām prabhāvam saṅkhyātum vāsukeḥ api śaktatā na asti.
20. Even Vāsuki does not possess the capability to count the greatness of those noble individuals (literally, 'family-lotuses') who are great and adorned with virtues and beauty.
हरिवक्षोगता लक्ष्मीरपि शोभार्थमेव यत् ।
बिभर्ति कमलं हस्ते कान्याशंसाधिका भवेत् ॥ २१ ॥
harivakṣogatā lakṣmīrapi śobhārthameva yat ,
bibharti kamalaṃ haste kānyāśaṃsādhikā bhavet 21
21. harivakṣogatā lakṣmīḥ api śobhārtham eva yat
bibharti kamalam haste kā anyā āśaṃsā adhikā bhavet
21. yat harivakṣogatā lakṣmīḥ api śobhārtham eva
kamalam haste bibharti kā anyā adhikā āśaṃsā bhavet
21. Since even Lakshmi (lakṣmī), who resides on Viṣṇu's (Hari) chest, holds a lotus (kamala) in her hand purely for aesthetic appeal, what other greater aspiration could possibly exist?
सितासिताभ्यां रूपाभ्यां कमलोत्पलखण्डयोः ।
वैसादृश्यं भवेत्किंतु समा जडजडैतयोः ॥ २२ ॥
sitāsitābhyāṃ rūpābhyāṃ kamalotpalakhaṇḍayoḥ ,
vaisādṛśyaṃ bhavetkiṃtu samā jaḍajaḍaitayoḥ 22
22. sitāsitābhyām rūpābhyām kamala-utpala-khaṇḍayoḥ
vaisādṛśyam bhavet kimtu samā jaḍajaḍa etayoḥ
22. kamala-utpala-khaṇḍayoḥ sitāsitābhyām rūpābhyām
vaisādṛśyam bhavet kimtu etayoḥ jaḍajaḍa samā
22. While a dissimilarity might exist between the white and dark forms of the lotus (kamala) and the blue water lily (utpala) segments, their inherent inertness (jaḍa) is, however, the same.
साम्यं न फुल्लविपिनेन सरःसु याति व्योम्ना न तारकयुतेन न चेन्दुवृन्दैः ।
नृत्यद्वधूविहसिताननशोभयैति फुल्लस्य पङ्कजवनस्य नवोदिता श्रीः ॥ २३ ॥
sāmyaṃ na phullavipinena saraḥsu yāti vyomnā na tārakayutena na cenduvṛndaiḥ ,
nṛtyadvadhūvihasitānanaśobhayaiti phullasya paṅkajavanasya navoditā śrīḥ 23
23. sāmyam na phullavipnena saraḥsu yāti
vyomnā na tārakayutena na ca induvṛndaiḥ
nṛtyadvadhūvihasitānanaśobhayā eti
phullasya paṅkajavanasya navoditā śrīḥ
23. phullasya paṅkajavanasya navoditā śrīḥ
phullavipnena saraḥsu sāmyam na yāti
tārakayutena vyomnā ca na induvṛndaiḥ
na nṛtyadvadhūvihasitānanaśobhayā eti
23. The fresh, newly manifest splendor (śrī) of the blossoming lotus (paṅkaja) grove does not attain equality with a flowering forest (found in lakes), nor with a sky adorned with stars, nor with hosts of moons. Instead, it achieves similarity with the beauty of the smiling faces of dancing women.
येषां पुष्पलतास्वादैरनन्यमनसां गतम् ।
भृङ्गाणामायुरायामि त एव सुभगोत्तमाः ॥ २४ ॥
yeṣāṃ puṣpalatāsvādairananyamanasāṃ gatam ,
bhṛṅgāṇāmāyurāyāmi ta eva subhagottamāḥ 24
24. yeṣām puṣpalatā-āsvādaiḥ ananyamanasām gatam
bhṛṅgāṇām āyuḥ āyāmi te eva subhagottamāḥ
24. yeṣām ananyamanasām bhṛṅgāṇām puṣpalatā-āsvādaiḥ
āyāmi āyuḥ gatam te eva subhagottamāḥ
24. Those bees (bhṛṅga) whose long lives have been spent with their minds singularly devoted (ananyamanas) to the enjoyment of nectar from flowering vines are indeed the most fortunate (subhaga).
चूतचारुचमत्कारं चञ्चरीकाश्चरन्ति ये ।

25. Those bumblebees that experience the exquisite charm of mango blossoms, they alone are truly remarkable. Others merely exist to fill their species.
मत्ता मधुमदामोदैः पुष्करेषु रणन्ति ये ।
तुष्टानामितरस्वादैर्भ्रमराणां हसन्ति ते ॥ २६ ॥
mattā madhumadāmodaiḥ puṣkareṣu raṇanti ye ,
tuṣṭānāmitarasvādairbhramarāṇāṃ hasanti te 26
26. mattāḥ madhumadāmodaiḥ puṣkareṣu raṇanti ye

26. Those (bumblebees) who, intoxicated by the fragrant delight of honey, buzz amidst the lotuses – they mock the other bumblebees who are content with lesser flavors.
येनोषितं विरुतमुल्लसितं प्रसुप्तं पद्मोदरेषु शशिकोटरकोमलेषु ।
भृङ्गः स एष शिशिरे विरसेषु भावं कष्टं करिष्यति कथं तरुपुष्पकेषु ॥ २७ ॥

ullasitam,
prasuptam,
sa eṣa bhṛṅgaḥ śiśire viraseṣu tarupuṣpakeṣu kaṣṭam bhāvam katham kariṣyati?
27. That very bumblebee, which has lived, hummed, delighted, and deeply slept within the interiors of lotuses, soft as the hollow of the moon – how will it endure a miserable existence among the flavorless tree blossoms in winter?
अफुल्लमल्लिकोद्दाममुकुलोपरि षट्पदः ।
दृश्यते कालरुद्रेण शूले प्रोत इवान्धकः ॥ २८ ॥

28. The bumblebee, clinging to the abundant, unopened jasmine buds, appears as if the demon Andhaka, impaled on a spear by the terrifying Rudra (kālarudra).
आस्वादयन्विविधपुष्पमधूनि भृङ्ग नित्यं भ्रमन्सकलशैललतागृहेषु ।
नाद्यापि तुष्यसि किमङ्ग दुराशयोऽसि मन्ये न सारमुपगच्छसि वा वनेभ्यः ॥ २९ ॥
āsvādayanvividhapuṣpamadhūni bhṛṅga nityaṃ bhramansakalaśailalatāgṛheṣu ,
nādyāpi tuṣyasi kimaṅga durāśayo'si manye na sāramupagacchasi vā vanebhyaḥ 29

adyāpi na tuṣyasi? aṅga kim durāśayaḥ asi? manye vā vanebhyaḥ sāram na upagacchasi.
29. O bee, constantly tasting the honeys of various flowers and wandering through all the arbors of the mountains, are you still not satisfied even now? Indeed, why are you so greedy (durāśaya)? I suspect that you do not truly grasp the essence (sāra) from the forests.
कमलकुलकवलकोविद गच्छ सरो मधुप मा रूढम् ।
बदरदरीषु विदीर्णं देहं कुरु कण्टकक्रकचैः ॥ ३० ॥

badaradarīṣu vidīrṇaṃ dehaṃ kuru kaṇṭakakrakacaiḥ 30

30. O bee, expert in enjoying the abundance of lotuses, go to the lake! Do not climb into the jujube thickets and tear your body apart with their saw-like thorns.
अतसीकुसुमे कुवलयदलवलये विकसिते च तापिच्छे ।
परभागमेहि मधुना तासु विसदृशीव पण्डितः पुरुषः ॥ ३१ ॥

31. O bee, when the linseed flower, the circle of blue lotus petals, and the Tamāla tree are in bloom, attain supreme excellence. For, among these (blossoms), a discerning person (puruṣa) is (considered) incomparable.
पश्यैषा नाभिनलिनीकेसरैः पालिता श्रिया ।
हंसमालामलावल्ली सामगायनकूजिता ॥ ३२ ॥
paśyaiṣā nābhinalinīkesaraiḥ pālitā śriyā ,

32. Behold! This garland-creeper of rows of swans is protected by divine grace (śrī) and sustained by the filaments of Viṣṇu's navel-lotus, resounding with the melodious chants of Sāman singers.
दोलाकमलनीडस्थां दृष्ट्वा खे प्रतिबिम्बिताम् ।
हंसो हंसीमनुसरन्मण्डले नेह चेतति ॥ ३३ ॥
dolākamalanīḍasthāṃ dṛṣṭvā khe pratibimbitām ,
haṃso haṃsīmanusaranmaṇḍale neha cetati 33
33. dolākamalanīḍasthām dṛṣṭvā khe pratibimbitām
haṃsaḥ haṃsīm anusaran maṇḍale na iha cetati

33. Seeing his female swan (haṃsī) reflected in the sky, as if she were resting in a swaying lotus nest, the male swan (haṃsa) pursues her in a circle, not realizing that she is not actually there.
मा भूत्कस्यचिदेवैषा राजन्व्यसनिता भृशम् ।
पश्यैतां बिम्बितां हंसो हंसीमनुसरन्मृतः ॥ ३४ ॥
mā bhūtkasyacidevaiṣā rājanvyasanitā bhṛśam ,
paśyaitāṃ bimbitāṃ haṃso haṃsīmanusaranmṛtaḥ 34
34. mā bhūt kasyacid eva eṣā rājan vyasanitā bhṛśam
paśya etām bimbitām haṃsaḥ haṃsīm anusaran mṛtaḥ
34. rājan,
eṣā bhṛśam vyasanitā kasyacid eva mā bhūt.
etām bimbitām haṃsīm anusaran mṛtaḥ haṃsaḥ paśya.
34. O King, may such intense infatuation (vyasanitā) never afflict anyone! Look at this swan (haṃsa), who died pursuing his female swan (haṃsī) as she was reflected (in the water).
हेलया राजहंसेन यत्कृतं कलकूजितम् ।
न तद्वर्षशतेनापि जानात्याशिक्षितुं बकः ॥ ३५ ॥
helayā rājahaṃsena yatkṛtaṃ kalakūjitam ,
na tadvarṣaśatenāpi jānātyāśikṣituṃ bakaḥ 35
35. helayā rājahaṃsena yat kṛtam kalakūjitam na
tat varṣaśatena api jānāti āśikṣitum bakaḥ

35. What melodious call (kalakūjitam) was effortlessly made by the royal swan (rājahaṃsa), that, even in a hundred years, a crane (baka) cannot learn or master.
समानेष्वाकराकारजातिचेष्टाशनादिषु ।
हंसस्य राजहंसस्य दूरमत्यन्तमन्तरम् ॥ ३६ ॥

haṃsasya rājahaṃsasya dūramatyantamantaram 36
36. samāneṣu ākarākāra-jāti-ceṣṭā-aśanādiṣu

36. Even when they are similar in matters like their place of origin, appearance, species, movements, and food, the difference between a common swan (haṃsa) and a royal swan (rājahaṃsa) is exceedingly great.
शुक्लपक्षस्थितो व्योम्नि कुमुदाकरभासकः ।
आह्लादयति चेतांसि हंसश्चन्द्र इवोत्थितः ॥ ३७ ॥

āhlādayati cetāṃsi haṃsaścandra ivotthitaḥ 37

37. A swan, having risen, delights the minds, just like the moon (candra) that is positioned in the sky during the bright fortnight and illuminates the lotus ponds.
उन्नालनलिनीनालकदलीस्तम्भसंकुले ।
वने विहरतां लक्ष्मीं हंसानामेति कः खगः ॥ ३८ ॥

38. In a forest dense with the raised stalks of lotuses and banana trunks, what bird can attain the splendor of the swans as they sport?

कुमुदोत्पलकह्लारपुष्पसंभारसुन्दरी ॥ ३९ ॥

39. Adorned with waves as bracelets, bearing a charming necklace of shimmering spray, and beautiful with an abundance of kumuda (white water lilies), utpala (blue lotuses), and kahlāra flowers.
भृङ्गलोलालकलता रणत्सारसनूपुरा ।
वर्तुलावर्तनाभीका चलद्वीचिविलोचना ॥ ४० ॥

40. With creeper-like locks of hair as dark and restless as bees, whose anklets are the noisy cranes, whose navel is like a circular whirlpool, and whose eyes are like restless waves.
प्रतीक्षमाणा दयितं रसपूरकरं धरम् ।
नारीव सरसी चारुहंसकाभ्यां विराजते ॥ ४१ ॥
pratīkṣamāṇā dayitaṃ rasapūrakaraṃ dharam ,
nārīva sarasī cāruhaṃsakābhyāṃ virājate 41
41. pratīkṣamāṇā dayitaṃ rasapūrakaraṃ dharam
nārī iva sarasī cāruhamsakābhyām virājate

41. A pond, like a woman who eagerly awaits her beloved - the one who brings richness of joy and provides sustenance - shines splendidly with its two graceful swans.
हे हंस मद्गुबककाकशरारुसारे मा त्वं सरस्यविरतं कुरु वासमेकः ।
आपद्यपीह समशीलवयोवचोभिः श्रेयःफला भवति संगतिरात्मवर्गैः ॥ ४२ ॥
he haṃsa madgubakakākaśarārusāre mā tvaṃ sarasyavirataṃ kuru vāsamekaḥ ,
āpadyapīha samaśīlavayovacobhiḥ śreyaḥphalā bhavati saṃgatirātmavargaiḥ 42
42. he haṃsa madgubakakākaśarārusāre mā
tvaṃ sarasi aviratam kuru vāsam ekaḥ
āpadi api iha samaśīlavayovacobhiḥ
śreyaḥphalā bhavati saṅgatiḥ ātmavargaiḥ
42. he haṃsa! tvaṃ madgubakakākaśarārusāre sarasi ekaḥ aviratam vāsam mā kuru.
iha āpadi api samaśīlavayovacobhiḥ ātmavargaiḥ saṅgatiḥ śreyaḥphalā bhavati.
42. O swan, do not dwell continuously and alone in this pond, which is teeming with cormorants, herons, crows, and śarāru birds. For, even in adversity, companionship with those of one's own kind (ātman) - those sharing similar character, age, and speech - brings about auspicious results.
पादाक्रान्तमहेभमस्तकतटः पद्माकरैकालयः कह्लारोत्पलकुन्दचम्पकलतासंभोगसौभाग्यवान् ।
भृङ्गोऽप्येष विधेर्वशेन शिशिरे लोष्टं तृणं स्वादयन् शीते शुष्कबकत्यहो नु विपदा दैन्ये मनो दीयते ॥ ४३ ॥
pādākrāntamahebhamastakataṭaḥ padmākaraikālayaḥ kahlārotpalakundacampakalatāsaṃbhogasaubhāgyavān ,
bhṛṅgo'pyeṣa vidhervaśena śiśire loṣṭaṃ tṛṇaṃ svādayan śīte śuṣkabakatyaho nu vipadā dainye mano dīyate 43
43. pādākrāntamahebhamastakataṭaḥ padmākarālayah
kahlārotpalakundacampakalatāsaṃbhogasaubhāgyavān bhṛṅgaḥ
api eṣaḥ vidheḥ vaśena śiśire loṣṭaṃ tṛṇaṃ svādayan
śīte śuṣkabakati aho nu vipadā dainye manaḥ dīyate
43. pādākrāntamahebhamastakataṭaḥ padmākarālayah kahlārotpalakundacampakalatāsaṃbhogasaubhāgyavān eṣaḥ bhṛṅgaḥ api vidheḥ vaśena śiśire śīte loṣṭaṃ tṛṇaṃ svādayan śuṣkabakati.
aho nu! vipadā दैन्ये manaḥ dīyate.
43. This bee, whose feet once graced the foreheads of magnificent elephants, whose home was among the lotus ponds, and who was blessed with the joy of embracing the creepers of kahḷāra, utpala, kunda, and campaka flowers - even this very bee, compelled by destiny (vidhi), now in the bitter cold of winter, tastes mere clods of earth and dry grass, and eats dry bark. Alas! Indeed, in times of adversity, the mind is driven to despair and wretchedness.
पुत्रस्येह दलोदरे द्युति तरत्तारं चिरं संस्मृतं हंसस्यांसविनुन्ननालगहने संचारिणा भो मया ।
शुक्लासारमिवाब्जिनी विकिरति स्वं वारिबिन्दूत्करं मध्याह्ने शिशिरं विकासि सहसा मूर्घ्नि स्फुटं दृश्यताम् ॥ ४४ ॥
putrasyeha dalodare dyuti tarattāraṃ ciraṃ saṃsmṛtaṃ haṃsasyāṃsavinunnanālagahane saṃcāriṇā bho mayā ,
śuklāsāramivābjinī vikirati svaṃ vāribindūtkaraṃ madhyāhne śiśiraṃ vikāsi sahasā mūrghni sphuṭaṃ dṛśyatām 44
44. putrasya iha dalodare dyuti tarattāraṃ ciram saṃsmṛtam
haṃsasya aṃsavinunnanālagahane saṃcāriṇā bho
mayā śuklāsāram iva abjinī vāribindūtkaram madhyāhne
śiśiram vikāsi sahasā mūrdhani sphuṭam dṛśyatām
44. bho! haṃsasya aṃsavinunnanālagahane saṃcāriṇā mayā,
iha putrasya dalodare tarattāraṃ dyuti ciram saṃsmṛtam.
abjinī svam vāribindūtkaram śuklāsāram iva vikirati; (tat) madhyāhne sahāsā mūrdhani sphuṭam śiśiram विकासि (च) dṛśyatām.
44. O! By me, who once moved among the dense lotus stalks pushed aside by a swan's shoulder, the star-like radiance within the petal-womb of a young lotus has long been cherished in memory. Look now! Let its own cool and blossoming multitude of water drops, scattered by the lotus plant (abjinī) like a white shower, be clearly seen suddenly at midday, resting upon its head.
व्योम्नीन्दोरिवसौम्यवारिणिचिरं निःशब्दकं सर्पतो हंसस्यांसहताब्जनालवलनानिष्कम्पटङ्कक्षतैः ।
गङ्गावारिवदत्र पुष्करपुटाद्ब्राह्मादिवास्योपरि भ्रष्टा ये जलबिन्दवो जलचरा हृष्टाः पिबन्त्याशु तान् ॥ ४५ ॥
vyomnīndorivasaumyavāriṇiciraṃ niḥśabdakaṃ sarpato haṃsasyāṃsahatābjanālavalanāniṣkampaṭaṅkakṣataiḥ ,
gaṅgāvārivadatra puṣkarapuṭādbrāhmādivāsyopari bhraṣṭā ye jalabindavo jalacarā hṛṣṭāḥ pibantyāśu tān 45
45. vyomni indor iva saumya-vāriṇi ciram niḥśabdakam sarpataḥ
haṃsasya asahata-abjanāla-valana-niṣkampa-ṭaṅka-kṣataiḥ
gaṅgā-vārivat atra puṣkara-puṭāt brāhmādi-vāsya-upari
bhraṣṭāḥ ye jala-bindavaḥ jala-carāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ pibanti āśu tān
45. atra saumya-vāriṇi ciram niḥśabdakam vyomni indor iva
sarpataḥ haṃsasya asahata-abjanāla-valana-niṣkampa-ṭaṅka-kṣataiḥ
puṣkara-puṭāt ye gaṅgā-vārivat brāhmādi-vāsya-upari
bhraṣṭāḥ jala-bindavaḥ tān jala-carāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ āśu pibanti
45. Like the moon in the sky, from the swan gracefully gliding for a long time in calm water, by its unwavering pecks that grasp lotus stalks without disturbing them, here, water drops fall from a lotus petal. These drops, pure like the waters of the Ganges and originating from above Brahma's abode, are quickly and joyfully drunk by the aquatic creatures.
