1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: The winds (vāyavaḥ) blew, rolling up mists, scattering the fresh shoots of the forests, shaking masses of trees, and playfully piling up dust.
पक्षिवद्भ्रान्तवृक्षौघाः पतनोत्पातनोद्भटाः ।
विकुट्टिताट्टालखण्डाश्चाभ्रभित्तिविभेदिनः ॥ २ ॥
pakṣivadbhrāntavṛkṣaughāḥ patanotpātanodbhaṭāḥ ,
vikuṭṭitāṭṭālakhaṇḍāścābhrabhittivibhedinaḥ 2
2. pakṣivat bhrāntavṛkṣaughāḥ patanotpātanodbhaṭāḥ

2. They (the winds, previously mentioned) caused masses of trees to spin like birds, and were formidable in their tumultuous falling and rising. They shattered fragments of towers and pierced through the walls of clouds.
तेनातिभीमवातेन विदूरथरथोऽप्यथ ।
उह्यमानोऽभवन्नद्या यथा जर्जरपल्लवः ॥ ३ ॥
tenātibhīmavātena vidūratharatho'pyatha ,
uhyamāno'bhavannadyā yathā jarjarapallavaḥ 3
3. tena atibhīmavātena vidūrarathaḥ api atha
uhyamānaḥ abhavat nadyā yathā jarjarapallavaḥ

3. Then, Vidūratha, along with his chariot, was carried away by that exceedingly dreadful wind, just as a withered leaf is carried by a river.
विदूरथोऽथ तत्याज पार्वतास्त्रं महास्त्रवित् ।
व्योमापि घनतोयेन समादातुमिवोद्यतम् ॥ ४ ॥
vidūratho'tha tatyāja pārvatāstraṃ mahāstravit ,
vyomāpi ghanatoyena samādātumivodyatam 4
4. vidūrarathaḥ atha tatyāja pārvasatram mahāstravit
vyoma api ghanatoyena samādātum iva udyatam

4. Then Vidūratha, a master of great weapons, released the mountain (pārvata) weapon. It was as if even the sky was preparing to engulf everything with dense clouds and rain.
तेन शैलास्त्रघातेन विराट् प्राणसमीरणः ।
शमं चैतन्यशान्त्येव प्रययौ वायुराततः ॥ ५ ॥
tena śailāstraghātena virāṭ prāṇasamīraṇaḥ ,
śamaṃ caitanyaśāntyeva prayayau vāyurātataḥ 5
5. tena śailāstraghātena virāṭ prāṇasamīraṇaḥ
śamam caitanyaśāntyā iva prayayau vāyuḥ ātataḥ
5. tena śailāstraghātena virāṭ prāṇasamīraṇaḥ
ātataḥ vāyuḥ caitanyaśāntyā iva śamam prayayau
5. By the impact of that mountain (śaila) weapon, Virāṭ's pervasive (ātata) life-wind (prāṇasamīraṇa) attained cessation (śama), as if by the profound tranquility of consciousness (caitanya).
अन्तरिक्षगता वृक्षपङ्क्तयः पतिता भुवि ।
नानाजनशवव्यूहे काकानामिव कोटयः ॥ ६ ॥
antarikṣagatā vṛkṣapaṅktayaḥ patitā bhuvi ,
nānājanaśavavyūhe kākānāmiva koṭayaḥ 6
6. antarikṣagatāḥ vṛkṣapaṅktayaḥ patitāḥ
bhuvi nānājanaśavavyūhe kākānām iva koṭayaḥ
6. antarikṣagatāḥ vṛkṣapaṅktayaḥ nānājanaśavavyūhe

6. The rows of trees that had been hurled into the sky fell to the ground amidst heaps of diverse human corpses, resembling millions of crows.
शेमुः सूत्त्कारडान्कारभांकारोत्कारका दिशाम् ।
प्रलापा इव विध्वस्ताः पूर्ग्रामवनवीरुधाम् ॥ ७ ॥
śemuḥ sūttkāraḍānkārabhāṃkārotkārakā diśām ,
pralāpā iva vidhvastāḥ pūrgrāmavanavīrudhām 7
7. śemuḥ sūtkāraḍāṅkārabhāṅkārotkārakāḥ diśām
pralāpāḥ iva vidhvastāḥ pūrgrāmavanavīrudhām
7. sūtkāraḍāṅkārabhāṅkārotkārakāḥ pralāpāḥ iva,
vidhvastāḥ pūrgrāmavanavīrudhām diśām śemuḥ
7. The sounds characterized by whistling, booming, and roaring filled the directions, like the shattered, incoherent cries of devastated cities, villages, forests, and creeping plants.
गिरीनपश्यन्नभसः पततः पत्रवर्णवत् ।
सिन्धुः सिन्धुरिवोत्पक्षान्मैनाकादीनितस्ततः ॥ ८ ॥
girīnapaśyannabhasaḥ patataḥ patravarṇavat ,
sindhuḥ sindhurivotpakṣānmainākādīnitastataḥ 8
8. girīn apaśyat nabhasaḥ patataḥ patravarṇavat
sindhuḥ sindhuḥ iva utpakṣān mainākādīn itastataḥ
8. sindhuḥ sindhuḥ iva,
nabhasaḥ patravarṇavat patataḥ utpakṣān mainākādīn girīn itastataḥ apaśyat
8. The ocean (sindhu), like an elephant (sindhu), saw the Maināka and other mountains, whose wings were torn off, falling from the sky here and there like colored leaves.
वज्रास्त्रमसृजद्दीप्तं चेरुर्वज्रगणास्ततः ।
पिबन्तोऽद्रीन्द्रतिमिरमग्निदाहमिवाग्नयः ॥ ९ ॥
vajrāstramasṛjaddīptaṃ cerurvajragaṇāstataḥ ,
pibanto'drīndratimiramagnidāhamivāgnayaḥ 9
9. vajrāstram asṛjat dīptam ceruḥ vajragaṇāḥ tataḥ
pibantaḥ adrīndratimiram agnidāham iva agnayaḥ
9. (saḥ) dīptam vajrāstram asṛjat.
tataḥ vajragaṇāḥ agnayaḥ agnidāham iva,
adrīndratimiram pibantaḥ ceruḥ
9. He discharged the blazing thunderbolt weapon. Then, hosts of thunderbolts moved about, consuming the darkness covering the great mountains, just as fires consume a raging conflagration.
ते गिरीणां तथा क्षिप्ताः कोटितुण्डावखण्डनैः ।
शिरांसि पातयामासुः फलानीवोल्बणानिलाः ॥ १० ॥
te girīṇāṃ tathā kṣiptāḥ koṭituṇḍāvakhaṇḍanaiḥ ,
śirāṃsi pātayāmāsuḥ phalānīvolbaṇānilāḥ 10
10. te girīṇām tathā kṣiptāḥ koṭituṇḍāvakhaṇḍanaiḥ
śirāṃsi pātayāmāsuḥ phalāni iva ulbaṇānilāḥ
10. te tathā kṣiptāḥ koṭituṇḍāvakhaṇḍanaiḥ girīṇām śirāṃsi pātayāmāsuḥ,
ulbaṇānilāḥ phalāni iva
10. They (the thunderbolts), thus hurled, with their pointed tips tearing away parts of the mountains, made the mountain peaks fall, just as fierce winds cause fruits to drop.
विदूरथोऽथ वज्रास्त्रशान्त्यै ब्रह्मास्त्रमत्यगात् ।
ततो ब्रह्मास्त्रवज्रास्त्रे समं प्रशममागते ॥ ११ ॥
vidūratho'tha vajrāstraśāntyai brahmāstramatyagāt ,
tato brahmāstravajrāstre samaṃ praśamamāgate 11
11. vidūrathaḥ atha vajrāstraśāntyai brahmāstram atyagāt
tataḥ brahmāstra-vajrāstre samam praśamam āgate
11. atha vidūrathaḥ vajrāstraśāntyai brahmāstram atyagāt
tataḥ brahmāstra-vajrāstre samam praśamam āgate
11. Then, Vidūratha deployed the Brahmā weapon to neutralize the Vajra weapon. Consequently, both the Brahmā weapon and the Vajra weapon simultaneously ceased their effects.
श्यामाश्यामं पिशाचास्त्रमथ सिन्धुरचोदयत् ।
तेनोदगुः पिशाचानां पङ्क्तयोऽत्यन्तभीतिदाः ॥ १२ ॥
śyāmāśyāmaṃ piśācāstramatha sindhuracodayat ,
tenodaguḥ piśācānāṃ paṅktayo'tyantabhītidāḥ 12
12. śyāmāśyāmam piśācāstram atha sindhuḥ acodayat
tena udaguḥ piśācānām paṅktayaḥ atyantabhītidaḥ
12. atha sindhuḥ śyāmāśyāmam piśācāstram acodayat
tena piśācānām atyantabhītidaḥ paṅktayaḥ udaguḥ
12. Then Sindhu unleashed the intensely dark Piśāca weapon. From it, hordes of piśācas (demons) arose, causing extreme terror.
संध्यायामथ भीत्येव दिवसः श्यामतां ययौ ।
पिशाचा भुवनं जग्मुरन्धकारभरा इव ॥ १३ ॥
saṃdhyāyāmatha bhītyeva divasaḥ śyāmatāṃ yayau ,
piśācā bhuvanaṃ jagmurandhakārabharā iva 13
13. sandhyāyām atha bhītyā iva divasaḥ śyāmatām
yayau piśācāḥ bhuvanam jagmuḥ andhakārabharāḥ iva
13. atha sandhyāyām bhītyā iva divasaḥ śyāmatām
yayau piśācāḥ andhakārabharāḥ iva bhuvanam jagmuḥ
13. Then, as if seized by fear in the evening twilight, the day itself turned dark. The piśācas (demons) pervaded the world, appearing like masses of darkness.
भस्मनः स्तम्भसदृशास्तालोत्तालविलासिनः ।
दृश्यमानमहाकारा मुष्टिग्राह्या न किंचन ॥ १४ ॥
bhasmanaḥ stambhasadṛśāstālottālavilāsinaḥ ,
dṛśyamānamahākārā muṣṭigrāhyā na kiṃcana 14
14. bhasmanaḥ stambhasadṛśāḥ tāloṭṭālavilāsinaḥ
dṛśyamānamahākārāḥ muṣṭigrāhyāḥ na kiñcana
14. ते (implied) bhasmanaḥ stambhasadṛśāḥ tāloṭṭālavilāsinaḥ
dṛśyamānamahākārāḥ na kiñcana muṣṭigrāhyāḥ
14. They were like pillars of ash, manifesting immense, towering forms, yet they were not tangible or graspable by a fist at all.
ऊर्ध्वकेशाः कृशाङ्गाश्च केचिच्च श्मश्रुला अपि ।
कृष्णाङ्गा मलिनाङ्गाश्च ग्राम्या इव नभश्चराः ॥ १५ ॥
ūrdhvakeśāḥ kṛśāṅgāśca kecicca śmaśrulā api ,
kṛṣṇāṅgā malināṅgāśca grāmyā iva nabhaścarāḥ 15
15. ūrdhvakeśāḥ kṛśāṅgāḥ ca kecit ca śmaśrulāḥ api |
kṛṣṇāṅgāḥ malināṅgāḥ ca grāmyāḥ iva nabhaścarāḥ ||
15. kecit ca ūrdhvakeśāḥ ca kṛśāṅgāḥ api śmaśrulāḥ
kṛṣṇāṅgāḥ ca malināṅgāḥ ca grāmyāḥ iva nabhaścarāḥ
15. Some had hair standing on end, lean bodies, and some even had beards. With dark and soiled limbs, they roamed the sky like villagers.
सभया मूढदृष्टाश्च यत्किंचनकराश्चलाः ।
दीना वज्रासिनः क्रूरा दीना ग्राम्यजना इव ॥ १६ ॥
sabhayā mūḍhadṛṣṭāśca yatkiṃcanakarāścalāḥ ,
dīnā vajrāsinaḥ krūrā dīnā grāmyajanā iva 16
16. sabhayāḥ mūḍhadṛṣṭāḥ ca yatkiṃcanakarāḥ ca calāḥ
| dīnāḥ vajrāśinaḥ krūrāḥ dīnāḥ grāmyajanāḥ iva ||
16. sabhayāḥ mūḍhadṛṣṭāḥ ca yatkiṃcanakarāḥ ca calāḥ
dīnāḥ vajrāśinaḥ krūrāḥ dīnāḥ grāmyajanāḥ iva
16. They were fearful, with bewildered gazes, acting erratically, and restless. Wielding vajras, they were cruel and wretched, appearing like miserable villagers.
तरुकर्दमरथ्यान्तः शून्यगेहगृहाश्चलाः ।
लेलिहानाः प्रेतरूपा कृष्णाङ्गाश्चपला इव ॥ १७ ॥
tarukardamarathyāntaḥ śūnyagehagṛhāścalāḥ ,
lelihānāḥ pretarūpā kṛṣṇāṅgāścapalā iva 17
17. tarukardamarathyāntāḥ śūnyagehagṛhāḥ ca calāḥ |
lelihānāḥ pretarūpāḥ kṛṣṇāṅgāḥ ca capalāḥ iva ||
17. calāḥ tarukardamarathyāntāḥ śūnyagehagṛhāḥ ca
lelihānāḥ pretarūpāḥ kṛṣṇāṅgāḥ ca capalāḥ iva
17. Restless, they frequented the interiors of trees, mud, and streets, and empty houses and homes. Licking their tongues, with ghost-like forms, dark-limbed, they were like agile creatures.
जगृहुस्ते तदा मत्ता हतशिष्टमरेर्बलम् ।
आसंस्तत्सैनिकास्तत्र भिन्नास्त्रक्षुब्धचेतनाः ॥ १८ ॥
jagṛhuste tadā mattā hataśiṣṭamarerbalam ,
āsaṃstatsainikāstatra bhinnāstrakṣubdhacetanāḥ 18
18. jagṛhuḥ te tadā mattāḥ hataśiṣṭam areḥ balam | āsan
tat sainikāḥ tatra bhinnāstra-kṣubdhacetanāḥ ||
18. tadā mattāḥ te areḥ hataśiṣṭam balam jagṛhuḥ
tatra tat sainikāḥ bhinnāstra-kṣubdhacetanāḥ āsan
18. Then, intoxicated, they seized the remaining enemy forces that had been defeated. The soldiers of that (enemy force) there were left with broken weapons and agitated minds.
त्यक्तायुधतनुत्राणास्त्रस्तप्राणाः स्खलद्गमाः ।
नेत्रैरङ्गेर्मुखैः पादैर्विकारभरकारिणः ॥ १९ ॥
tyaktāyudhatanutrāṇāstrastaprāṇāḥ skhaladgamāḥ ,
netrairaṅgermukhaiḥ pādairvikārabharakāriṇaḥ 19
19. tyakta-āyudha-tanutrāṇāḥ trasta-prāṇāḥ skhalad-gamāḥ
netraiḥ aṅgaiḥ mukhaiḥ pādaiḥ vikāra-bhara-kāriṇaḥ
19. tyakta-āyudha-tanutrāṇāḥ trasta-prāṇāḥ skhalad-gamāḥ
netraiḥ aṅgaiḥ mukhaiḥ pādaiḥ vikāra-bhara-kāriṇaḥ
19. They had abandoned their weapons and armor, their lives were filled with terror, and their movements faltered. Their eyes, limbs, faces, and feet displayed numerous contortions.
त्यक्तकौपीनवसना निमग्नावसनोत्तराः ।
विष्ठां मूत्रं च कुर्वन्तः स्थिरमारब्धनर्तनाः ॥ २० ॥
tyaktakaupīnavasanā nimagnāvasanottarāḥ ,
viṣṭhāṃ mūtraṃ ca kurvantaḥ sthiramārabdhanartanāḥ 20
20. tyakta-kaupīna-vasanāḥ nimagna-avasana-uttarāḥ
viṣṭhām mūtram ca kurvantaḥ sthiram ārabdha-nartanāḥ
20. tyakta-kaupīna-vasanāḥ nimagna-avasana-uttarāḥ
viṣṭhām mūtram ca kurvantaḥ sthiram ārabdha-nartanāḥ
20. They had discarded their loincloths and clothing, with their upper garments in disarray. They were excreting feces and urine and had begun to dance incessantly.
पिशाचराजी राजानं तस्य यावद्विदूरथम् ।
समाक्रामति तावत्तां मायां स बुबुधे बुधः ॥ २१ ॥
piśācarājī rājānaṃ tasya yāvadvidūratham ,
samākrāmati tāvattāṃ māyāṃ sa bubudhe budhaḥ 21
21. piśāca-rājī rājānam tasya yāvat vidūratham
samākrāmati tāvat tām māyām saḥ bubudhe budhaḥ
21. yāvat piśāca-rājī tasya rājānam vidūratham samākrāmati,
tāvat saḥ budhaḥ tām māyām bubudhe
21. While that multitude of demons assailed King Vidūratha, the wise one immediately recognized that illusion (māyā).
पिशाचसंग्रामकरीं मायां वेत्ति स भूमिपः ।
तया पिशाचसैन्यं तत्परसैन्ये न्ययोजयत् ॥ २२ ॥
piśācasaṃgrāmakarīṃ māyāṃ vetti sa bhūmipaḥ ,
tayā piśācasainyaṃ tatparasainye nyayojayat 22
22. piśāca-saṅgrāma-karīm māyām vetti saḥ bhūmipaḥ
tayā piśāca-sainyam tat para-sainye nyayojayat
22. saḥ bhūmipaḥ piśāca-saṅgrāma-karīm māyām vetti.
tayā (māyayā) tat piśāca-sainyam para-sainye nyayojayat
22. That king understood the illusion (māyā) that manifested a battle of demons. Using that (māyā), he projected that demon army upon the enemy's forces.
ततः स्वसैनिकाः स्वस्थाः परयोधाः पिशाचिनः ।
तस्याशु रूपिकास्त्रं च ददावन्यदसौ रुषा ॥ २३ ॥
tataḥ svasainikāḥ svasthāḥ parayodhāḥ piśācinaḥ ,
tasyāśu rūpikāstraṃ ca dadāvanyadasau ruṣā 23
23. tataḥ svasainikāḥ svasthāḥ parayodhāḥ piśācinaḥ
tasyāḥ āśu rūpikā-astraṃ ca dadau anyat asau ruṣā
23. tataḥ svasainikāḥ svasthāḥ (āsan) parayodhāḥ (ca) piśācinaḥ
(abhavan) asau ruṣā tasyāḥ rūpikā-astraṃ anyat ca āśu dadau
23. Then, her own soldiers were healthy, while the enemy warriors became like ghouls. That (goddess), in anger, quickly granted another weapon, her Rūpikā (weapon).
उदगुर्भूतलाद्व्योम्नो रूपिका ऊर्ध्वमूर्धजाः ।
निर्मग्नविकरालाक्ष्यश्चलच्छ्रोणिपयोधराः ॥ २४ ॥
udagurbhūtalādvyomno rūpikā ūrdhvamūrdhajāḥ ,
nirmagnavikarālākṣyaścalacchroṇipayodharāḥ 24
24. udaguḥ bhūtalāt vyomnaḥ rūpikāḥ ūrdhva-mūrdhajāḥ
nirmagna-vikrāla-ākṣyaḥ calat-śroṇi-payodharāḥ
24. rūpikāḥ bhūtalāt vyomnaḥ (ca) udaguḥ (tāḥ) ūrdhva-mūrdhajāḥ
nirmagna-vikrāla-ākṣyaḥ calat-śroṇi-payodharāḥ (ca āsan)
24. From the earth and the sky, Rūpikās arose, with hair standing erect, their eyes terrifyingly sunken, and their hips and breasts swaying.
उद्भिन्नयौवना वृद्धाः पीवराङ्ग्योऽथ जर्जराः ।
स्वरूपारूपजघना दुर्नाभ्यो विकसद्भगाः ॥ २५ ॥
udbhinnayauvanā vṛddhāḥ pīvarāṅgyo'tha jarjarāḥ ,
svarūpārūpajaghanā durnābhyo vikasadbhagāḥ 25
25. udbhinna-yauvanāḥ vṛddhāḥ pīvara-aṅgyaḥ atha jarjarāḥ
svarūpa-arūpa-jaghanāḥ durnābhyaḥ vikasat-bhagāḥ
25. (tāḥ rūpikāḥ) udbhinna-yauvanāḥ
vṛddhāḥ pīvara-aṅgyaḥ atha
jarjarāḥ svarūpa-arūpa-jaghanāḥ
durnābhyaḥ vikasat-bhagāḥ (ca āsan)
25. Some of the Rūpikās were bursting with youth, while others were aged; some had plump bodies, while others were decrepit. Some possessed shapely or misshapen hips, some had unsightly navels, and some had blossoming vulvas.
नररक्तशिरोहस्ताः संध्याभ्रारुणगात्रिकाः ।
अर्धचर्वितमांसासृक्स्रवत्सृक्क्याकुलाननाः ॥ २६ ॥
nararaktaśirohastāḥ saṃdhyābhrāruṇagātrikāḥ ,
ardhacarvitamāṃsāsṛksravatsṛkkyākulānanāḥ 26
26. nara-rakta-śiraḥ-hastāḥ sandhyā-abhrā-aruṇa-gātrikāḥ
ardha-carvita-māṃsa-asṛk-sravat-sṛkkyā-ākula-ānanāḥ
26. (tāḥ rūpikāḥ) nara-rakta-śiraḥ-hastāḥ
sandhyā-abhrā-aruṇa-gātrikāḥ
ardha-carvita-māṃsa-asṛk-sravat-sṛkkyā-ākula-ānanāḥ

26. Their hands grasped human blood and heads; their bodies were reddish like evening clouds. Their faces were smeared with half-chewed flesh and blood dripping from the corners of their mouths, making them appear agitated.
नानाङ्गवलना नानानमन्नमनसत्तमाः ।
शिलाभुजगवक्रोरुकटिपार्श्वकराङ्गिकाः ॥ २७ ॥
nānāṅgavalanā nānānamannamanasattamāḥ ,
śilābhujagavakrorukaṭipārśvakarāṅgikāḥ 27
27. nānāṅgavalanaḥ nānānamannamanasattamāḥ
śilābhujagavakrorukaṭipārśvakarāṅgikāḥ
27. (te āsan) nānāṅgavalanaḥ,
nānānamannamanasattamāḥ,
śilābhujagavakrorukaṭipārśvakarāṅgikāḥ.
27. They (the demonesses) were figures with various contortions of limbs, greatly bending and unbending in diverse ways. Their thighs, hips, sides, hands, and other body parts were crooked like rocks and serpents.
नारीकृतार्भकशवा हस्ताकृष्टान्त्ररज्जवः ।
श्वकाकोलूकवदना निम्नवक्त्रहनूदराः ॥ २८ ॥
nārīkṛtārbhakaśavā hastākṛṣṭāntrarajjavaḥ ,
śvakākolūkavadanā nimnavaktrahanūdarāḥ 28
28. nārīkṛtārbhakaśavāḥ hastākṛṣṭāntrarajjavaḥ
śvakākolūkavadanāḥ nimnavaktrahanūdarāḥ
28. (te āsan) nārīkṛtārbhakaśavāḥ,
hastākṛṣṭāntrarajjavaḥ,
śvakākolūkavadanāḥ,
nimnavaktrahanūdarāḥ.
28. They had transformed women into infant corpses, and their intestines were pulled out by their hands like ropes. Their faces resembled those of dogs, crows, and owls, and their mouths, jaws, and bellies were sunken.
जगृहुस्तान्पिशाचांस्ता दुर्बलान्दुःशिशूनिव ।
पिशाचरूपिकासैन्यं तदासीदेकतां गतम् ॥ २९ ॥
jagṛhustānpiśācāṃstā durbalānduḥśiśūniva ,
piśācarūpikāsainyaṃ tadāsīdekatāṃ gatam 29
29. jagṛhuḥ tān piśācān tā durbalān duḥśiśūn iva
piśācarūpikāsainyaṃ tadā āsīt ekatām gatam
29. (te) tān piśācān,
tā durbalān duḥśiśūn iva,
jagṛhuḥ.
tadā piśācarūpikāsainyaṃ ekatām gatam āsīt.
29. They seized those pishachas, those weak ones, like miserable infants. Then, the army of goblin-like figures became united.
निर्मग्ननर्तनोत्तानवदनाङ्गविलोचनम् ।
परस्पराक्रान्तिकरं प्रधावच्च परस्परम् ॥ ३० ॥
nirmagnanartanottānavadanāṅgavilocanam ,
parasparākrāntikaraṃ pradhāvacca parasparam 30
30. nirmagnanarttanottānavadanāṅgavilocanam
parasparākrāntikaram pradhāvat ca parasparam
30. (tat sainyaṃ āsīt) nirmagnanarttanottānavadanāṅgavilocanam,
parasparākrāntikaram ca parasparam pradhāvat.
30. The (unified) army (was) with sunken eyes, upturned faces, and dancing limbs, mutually attacking and rushing upon each other.
निष्कासितमहाजिह्व नानामुखविकारदम् ।
शरभाराढ्यमन्योन्यं ह्रियमाणशवाङ्गकम् ॥ ३१ ॥

31. With large tongues protruding, presenting various facial contortions, laden with multitudes of arrows, and with limbs of corpses being dragged away by one another.
रुधिराम्भसि मज्जं तदुन्मज्जद्धृल्लसत्तनु ।
लम्बोदरं लम्बभुजं लम्बकर्णोष्ठनासिकम् ॥ ३२ ॥
rudhirāmbhasi majjaṃ tadunmajjaddhṛllasattanu ,
lambodaraṃ lambabhujaṃ lambakarṇoṣṭhanāsikam 32

32. Sinking and emerging in the bloody water, with their bodies revealing gleaming chests, they had pendulous bellies, long dangling arms, and pendulous ears, lips, and noses.
रक्तमांसमहापङ्केष्वन्योन्यं वेल्लनाभ्यसत् ।
मन्दरोद्धूतदुग्धाब्धिलसत्कलकलाकुलम् ॥ ३३ ॥
raktamāṃsamahāpaṅkeṣvanyonyaṃ vellanābhyasat ,
mandaroddhūtadugdhābdhilasatkalakalākulam 33
33. raktamāṃsamahāpaṅkeṣu anyonyam vellanābhyasat

33. Writhing against each other in the great mire of blood and flesh, creating a confused din similar to the tumultuous gleam of the milk ocean churned by Mount Mandara.
यथैव मायासंचारस्तेन तस्य कृतः पुरा ।
तेनापि तस्याशु तथा कृतो बुद्ध्वा स लाघवात् ॥ ३४ ॥
yathaiva māyāsaṃcārastena tasya kṛtaḥ purā ,
tenāpi tasyāśu tathā kṛto buddhvā sa lāghavāt 34
34. yathā eva māyāsaṃcāraḥ tena tasya kṛtaḥ purā tena
api tasya āśu tathā kṛtaḥ buddhvā saḥ lāghavāt
34. yathā eva tena purā tasya māyāsaṃcāraḥ kṛtaḥ,
tathā api saḥ buddhvā lāghavāt tasya āśu kṛtaḥ
34. Just as an act of illusion (māyā) was performed by him upon that other one previously, so too, understanding the trick, that other one quickly returned the same to him with cleverness.
वेतालास्त्रं ततो दत्ते तेनोत्तस्थुः शवव्रजाः ।
अमूर्धानः समूर्धानो वेताला वेशवल्लिताः ॥ ३५ ॥
vetālāstraṃ tato datte tenottasthuḥ śavavrajāḥ ,
amūrdhānaḥ samūrdhāno vetālā veśavallitāḥ 35
35. vetāla-astram tataḥ datte tena uttasthuḥ śavavrajāḥ
amūrdhānaḥ samūrdhānaḥ vetālāḥ veśavallitāḥ
35. tataḥ vetāla-astram datte tena śavavrajāḥ amūrdhānaḥ
samūrdhānaḥ veśavallitāḥ vetālāḥ uttasthuḥ
35. Then he deployed the Vetāla-weapon, and by its power, throngs of corpses rose up. These were vetālās, some headless and some with heads, having entered and taken possession of the bodies.
ततः पिशाचवेतालरूपिकोग्रकबन्धवत् ।
तद्बभूव बलं भीममुर्वीनिगरणक्षमम् ॥ ३६ ॥
tataḥ piśācavetālarūpikograkabandhavat ,
tadbabhūva balaṃ bhīmamurvīnigaraṇakṣamam 36
36. tataḥ piśācavetālarūpikograkabandhavat tat
babhūva balam bhīmam urvīnigaraṇakṣamam

36. Then that dreadful army became like terrible, headless trunks in the form of piśācas and vetālās, capable of swallowing the entire earth.
अथेतरोऽपि भूपालो मायां संचार्य तां गुरौ ।
राक्षसास्त्रं ससर्जाथ त्रैलोक्यग्रहणोन्मुखम् ॥ ३७ ॥
athetaro'pi bhūpālo māyāṃ saṃcārya tāṃ gurau ,
rākṣasāstraṃ sasarjātha trailokyagrahaṇonmukham 37
37. atha itaraḥ api bhūpālaḥ māyām sañcārya tām gurau
rākṣasa-astram sasarja atha trailokyagrahaṇonmukham
37. atha itaraḥ bhūpālaḥ api tām māyām gurau sañcārya
atha trailokyagrahaṇonmukham rākṣasa-astram sasarja
37. Then the other king also, invoking that illusion (māyā) through his preceptor (guru), then released the Rākṣasa-weapon, which was intent on seizing the three worlds.
उदगुः पर्वताकाराः सर्वतः स्थूलराक्षसाः ।
देहमाश्रित्य निष्क्रान्ताः पातालान्नरका इव ॥ ३८ ॥
udaguḥ parvatākārāḥ sarvataḥ sthūlarākṣasāḥ ,
dehamāśritya niṣkrāntāḥ pātālānnarakā iva 38
38. udaguḥ parvatākārāḥ sarvataḥ sthūlarākṣasāḥ
deham āśritya niṣkrāntāḥ pātālān narakāḥ iva
38. parvatākārāḥ sthūlarākṣasāḥ sarvataḥ udaguḥ (te)

38. Huge rākṣasas (demons), mountain-like in form, arose from all sides. Having assumed bodies, they emerged from the netherworlds (pātāla) as if from hells.
अथोदभूद्बलं भीमं ससुरासुरभीतिदम् ।
गर्जद्रक्षोमहानादवाद्यनृत्यत्कबन्धकम् ॥ ३९ ॥
athodabhūdbalaṃ bhīmaṃ sasurāsurabhītidam ,
garjadrakṣomahānādavādyanṛtyatkabandhakam 39
39. atha udabhūt balam bhīmam sasurāsurabhītidam
gargadrākṣo-mahānādavādyanṛtyat-kabandhakam

39. Then, a terrible army emerged, striking fear into both gods and demons, where headless trunks danced to the music of the great roars from the roaring Rākṣasas.
मेदोमांसोपदंशाढ्यं रुधिरासवसुन्दरम् ।
क्षीबकूश्माण्डवेतालयक्षताण्डवसुन्दरम् ॥ ४० ॥
medomāṃsopadaṃśāḍhyaṃ rudhirāsavasundaram ,
kṣībakūśmāṇḍavetālayakṣatāṇḍavasundaram 40

40. It was rich with fat and flesh as relishes, beautiful with blood as intoxicating drink, and splendid with the vigorous dance (tāṇḍava) of drunken kūṣmāṇḍas, vetālas, and yakṣas.
कूश्माण्डकोत्ताण्डवदण्डपादक्षुब्धासृगुत्क्षिप्ततरङ्गसिक्तैः ।
संध्याभ्ररागोत्करकोटिकान्ति भूतैरसृक्स्रोतसि दत्तसेतु ॥ ४१ ॥
kūśmāṇḍakottāṇḍavadaṇḍapādakṣubdhāsṛgutkṣiptataraṅgasiktaiḥ ,
saṃdhyābhrarāgotkarakoṭikānti bhūtairasṛksrotasi dattasetu 41

41. A dam was formed in the stream of blood by these beings, who were drenched by waves of blood splashed up by the agitated, stomping feet of the vigorously dancing kūṣmāṇḍas, and whose radiance was like millions of clusters of crimson twilight clouds.
