उपशमप्रकरणादनन्तरमिदं श्रृणु ।
त्वं निर्वाणप्रकरणं ज्ञातं निर्वाणदायि यत् ॥ १ ॥

1. śrī-vālmīkiḥ uvāca upaśama-prakaraṇāt anantaram idam
śṛṇu tvam nirvāṇa-prakaraṇam jñātam nirvāṇa-dāyi yat
1. The venerable Vālmīki said: 'After the chapter on tranquility, listen to this - the chapter on (nirvāṇa) liberation, which is known to bestow (nirvāṇa) liberation.'
कथयत्येवमुद्दामवचने मुनिनायके ।
श्रवणैकरसे मौनस्थिते राजकुमारके ॥ २ ॥
kathayatyevamuddāmavacane munināyake ,
śravaṇaikarase maunasthite rājakumārake 2
2. kathayati evam uddāma-vacane muni-nāyake
śravaṇa-eka-rase mauna-sthite rāja-kumārake
2. While the chief of sages was speaking thus with unrestrained words, and the prince remained silent, his sole delight being to listen.
मुनिवागर्थनिक्षिप्तमनस्यस्ततपःक्रिये ।
राजलोके गतस्पन्दे चित्रार्पित इव स्थिते ॥ ३ ॥
munivāgarthanikṣiptamanasyastatapaḥkriye ,
rājaloke gataspande citrārpita iva sthite 3
3. muni-vāk-artha-nikṣipta-manasi asta-tapaḥ-kriye
rāja-loke gata-spande citra-arpita iva sthite
3. When the royal assembly, with their minds fixed on the meaning of the sage's words, and all their activities ceased, remained motionless as if depicted in a painting.
वसिष्ठवचसामर्थं विचारयति सादरम् ।
लसदङ्गुलिभङ्गेन मुनिसार्थे स्फुरद्भुवि ॥ ४ ॥
vasiṣṭhavacasāmarthaṃ vicārayati sādaram ,
lasadaṅgulibhaṅgena munisārthe sphuradbhuvi 4
4. vasisthavacasāmartham vicārayati sādaram
lasadaṅgulibhaṅgena munisārthe sphurad bhuvi
4. sādaram vasiṣṭhavacasāmartham vicārayati,

4. He respectfully ponders the profound meaning of Vasiṣṭha's words, while among the assembly of sages, on the glistening ground, with the gestures of his radiant fingers.
विस्मयालोकनोल्लासप्रोत्फुल्लनयनालिनि ।
पुरन्ध्रिवर्गे गम्भीरतरुमञ्जरितां गते ॥ ५ ॥

5. Among the group of women (purandhrivarga), whose rows of eyes were fully opened with the joy of wondrous sight, and who had become like deeply blossoming trees in their serene beauty and silence.
खे वासरचतुर्भागदेशे दिनकरे स्थिते ।
किंचिज्ज्ञानोदयात्सौम्ये किंचिच्छममुपेयुषि ॥ ६ ॥
khe vāsaracaturbhāgadeśe dinakare sthite ,
kiṃcijjñānodayātsaumye kiṃcicchamamupeyuṣi 6
6. khe vāsaracaturbhāgadeśe dinakare sthite

6. When the sun was situated in the sky, in the region of the fourth part of the day (late afternoon), and when (the listener) had become gentle due to a slight awakening of knowledge, having also attained a degree of tranquility.
श्रवणायेव संशान्ते वितानस्पन्दमालिते ।
मौनं मरुति मन्दारमधुरामोददायिनि ॥ ७ ॥
śravaṇāyeva saṃśānte vitānaspandamālite ,
maunaṃ maruti mandāramadhurāmodadāyini 7

7. When everything was completely calmed, as if for keen listening, and the atmosphere was adorned with the subtlest quiver; silence reigned in the wind, which gently carried the sweet fragrance of mandāra flowers.
पुष्पदामसुषुप्तासु महाभ्रमरपंक्तिषु ।
ज्ञातज्ञेयतया नूनं सम्यग्ध्यानवतीष्विव ॥ ८ ॥
puṣpadāmasuṣuptāsu mahābhramarapaṃktiṣu ,
jñātajñeyatayā nūnaṃ samyagdhyānavatīṣviva 8
8. puṣpadāmasuṣuptāsu mahābhramarapaṅktiṣu
jñātajñeyatayā nūnam samyagdhyānavatīṣu iva
8. nūnam mahābhramarapaṅktiṣu puṣpadāmasuṣuptāsu
jñātajñeyatayā samyagdhyānavatīṣu iva
8. It is as if, in the rows of large bees soundly asleep on the garlands of flowers, they are truly engaged in perfect meditation (dhyāna), having realized what is to be known.
मुक्ताजालकलापान्तर्गतास्वन्तरभूमिषु ।
कचत्यपगतस्पन्दं तोये श्रोतुमिवास्थिते ॥ ९ ॥
muktājālakalāpāntargatāsvantarabhūmiṣu ,
kacatyapagataspandaṃ toye śrotumivāsthite 9
9. muktājālakalāpāntargatāsu antarbhūmiṣu kacati
apagataspandaṃ toye śrotum iva āsthite

9. Within the inner spaces found amidst the clusters of pearl nets, it (the light) shines, motionless, as if poised in water to listen.
गृहान्तरं प्रविष्टेषु गवाक्षे दूरमंशुषु ।
विश्रामार्थमिवादीर्घं नभःपान्थेषु शीतलम् ॥ १० ॥
gṛhāntaraṃ praviṣṭeṣu gavākṣe dūramaṃśuṣu ,
viśrāmārthamivādīrghaṃ nabhaḥpāntheṣu śītalam 10
10. gṛhāntaram praviṣṭeṣu gavākṣe dūram aṃśuṣu
viśrāmārtham iva adīrgham nabhaḥpāntheṣu śītalam
10. gavākṣe dūram gṛhāntaram praviṣṭeṣu aṃśuṣu,
nabhaḥpāntheṣu adīrgham viśrāmārtham iva śītalam
10. It (the light/atmosphere) is cool, as if the rays, having entered deep into the interior of houses through windows, are sky-travelers taking a short rest.
मुक्ताजालप्रभाजालभस्मनोद्धूलितात्मनि ।
शंसतीव शमं शाम्यद्दिनदेहे दिवातपे ॥ ११ ॥
muktājālaprabhājālabhasmanoddhūlitātmani ,
śaṃsatīva śamaṃ śāmyaddinadehe divātape 11
11. muktājālaprabhājālabhasmanā uddhūlitātmani
śaṃsati iva śamam śāmyatdinadehe divātape
11. divātape muktājālaprabhājālabhasmanā
uddhūlitātmani śāmyatdinadehe śamam iva śaṃsati
11. In the daylight, which has its essence (ātman) covered with the ash-like mass of luster from pearl nets and whose daily form is quieting down, it (the daylight) seems to proclaim tranquility.
करे लीलासरोजेषु शेखरेषु च भूभृताम् ।
श्रुत्वा सुरसमामोदादवृत्तिषु मनस्स्विव ॥ १२ ॥
kare līlāsarojeṣu śekhareṣu ca bhūbhṛtām ,
śrutvā surasamāmodādavṛttiṣu manassviva 12
12. kare līlāsarojeṣu śekhareṣu ca bhūbhṛtām
śrutvā surasamāmodāt vṛttiṣu manassu iva

12. Having heard the great delight of the gods, [they were present] in the hands, among the pleasure-lotuses, and on the crests of mountains, as if they were inclinations of the minds.
बालकेष्वज्ञलोकेषु लीलापक्षिषु सादरम् ।
भोजनार्थं वधूलोकमुपरुन्धत्स्वनारतम् ॥ १३ ॥
bālakeṣvajñalokeṣu līlāpakṣiṣu sādaram ,
bhojanārthaṃ vadhūlokamuparundhatsvanāratam 13
13. bālakeṣu ajñalokeṣu līlāpakṣiṣu sādaram
bhojanārtham vadhūlokam uparuṇdhatsu anāratam
13. anāratam sādaram bhojanārtham vadhūlokam
uparuṇdhatsu bālakeṣu ajñalokeṣu līlāpakṣiṣu
13. Constantly and eagerly, [they were] importuning the womenfolk for food, [and also present] among children, among ignorant people, and among playful birds.
भ्रमद्भ्रमरपक्षोत्थवातधूतरजस्यलम् ।
कौमुदे परिविश्रान्ते चामरेष्वक्षिपक्ष्मसु ॥ १४ ॥
bhramadbhramarapakṣotthavātadhūtarajasyalam ,
kaumude pariviśrānte cāmareṣvakṣipakṣmasu 14
14. bhramadbhramarapakṣotthavātadhūtarajasi alam
kaumude pariviśrānte cāmereṣu akṣipakṣmasu

kaumude pariviśrānte,

14. [They were present] in the greatly disturbed dust, stirred by the wind arising from the wings of whirling bees; and in the dust that had completely settled on the kumuda (lily); also, in the yak-tail whisks and on the eyelashes.
रश्मिष्वगगुहोन्मुक्तच्छायाजालभयादिव ।
गवाक्षादिष्विवोड्डीय प्रविष्टेषु गृहान्तरम् ॥ १५ ॥
raśmiṣvagaguhonmuktacchāyājālabhayādiva ,
gavākṣādiṣvivoḍḍīya praviṣṭeṣu gṛhāntaram 15
15. raśmiṣu agaguhāunmuktachāyājālabhayāt iva
gavākṣādiṣu iva uḍḍīya praviṣṭeṣu gṛhāntaram
15. raśmiṣu agaguhāunmuktachāyājālabhayāt iva,
uḍḍīya gṛhāntaram gavākṣādiṣu praviṣṭeṣu iva
15. [They were present] in the rays of light, as if from fear of the masses of shadows released from mountain caves; and having flown up and entered, as it were, into windows and similar openings, and into the interior of houses.
आसीद्दिनचतुर्भागसत्तावेदनतत्परः ।
भेरीपटहशङ्खानां दिङ्मुखापूरको ध्वनिः ॥ १६ ॥
āsīddinacaturbhāgasattāvedanatatparaḥ ,
bherīpaṭahaśaṅkhānāṃ diṅmukhāpūrako dhvaniḥ 16
16. āsīt dinacaturbhāgasattāvedanatatparaḥ
bherīpaṭahaśaṅkhānām dikmukhāpūrakaḥ dhvaniḥ
16. bherīpaṭahaśaṅkhānām dikmukhāpūrakaḥ
dinacaturbhāgasattāvedanatatparaḥ dhvaniḥ āsīt
16. A sound, born from drums, kettle-drums, and conchs, filled the cardinal directions and was intent on announcing the passage of a quarter of the day.
तेन तत्तारमप्याशु वचोऽन्तर्धानमाययौ ।
मौनं जलदनादेन मायूर इव निस्वनः ॥ १७ ॥
tena tattāramapyāśu vaco'ntardhānamāyayau ,
maunaṃ jaladanādena māyūra iva nisvanaḥ 17
17. tena tat tāram api āśu vacaḥ antardhānam āyayau
maunam jaladanādena māyūraḥ iva nisvanaḥ
17. tena tat tāram api vacaḥ āśu maunam antardhānam āyayau,
yathā jaladanādena māyūraḥ nisvanaḥ iva
17. By that (loud sound), even that high-pitched speech quickly faded into silence, just as a peacock's cry is silenced by the roar of thunder.
आक्षुब्धा क्षुब्धपक्षालिः पञ्जरस्था खगावली ।
भूकम्पे तरसाऽऽतालीपल्लवेव वनावली ॥ १८ ॥
ākṣubdhā kṣubdhapakṣāliḥ pañjarasthā khagāvalī ,
bhūkampe tarasā''tālīpallaveva vanāvalī 18
18. ākṣubdhā kṣubdhapakṣāliḥ pañjarasthā khagāvalī
bhūkampe tarasā ātālīpallavā iva vanāvalī
18. pañjarasthā kṣubdhapakṣāliḥ ākṣubdhā khagāvalī
yathā bhūkampe tarasā ātālīpallavā iva vanāvalī
18. The caged rows of birds, with their rows of wings agitated, became greatly disturbed, just as a line of forest trees, with its leaves trembling vigorously, would be in an earthquake.
आययुर्भयवित्रस्ता बाला धात्रीकुचान्तरम् ।
सारवं प्रावृषीवाब्दाः प्रोन्नतं श्रृङ्गकोटरम् ॥ १९ ॥
āyayurbhayavitrastā bālā dhātrīkucāntaram ,
sāravaṃ prāvṛṣīvābdāḥ pronnataṃ śrṛṅgakoṭaram 19
19. āyayuḥ bhayavitrastāḥ bālāḥ dhātrīkucāntaram
sāravam prāvṛṣi iva abdāḥ pronnataṁ śr̥ṅgakoṭaram
19. bhayavitrastāḥ bālāḥ dhātrīkucāntaram āyayuḥ yathā
sāravam abdāḥ prāvṛṣi pronnatam śr̥ṅgakoṭaram iva
19. The children, panic-stricken by fear, rushed to the protective space between their nursemaids' breasts, just as roaring clouds gather within a high mountain cave during the rainy season.
उत्तस्थुरवतंसेभ्यो भूभृतां भ्रमरस्रजः ।
ईषत्करालवाहाभ्यः सरिद्भ्योऽम्बुकणा इव ॥ २० ॥
uttasthuravataṃsebhyo bhūbhṛtāṃ bhramarasrajaḥ ,
īṣatkarālavāhābhyaḥ saridbhyo'mbukaṇā iva 20
20. uttasthuḥ avataṃsebhyas bhūbhṛtām bhramarasrajaḥ
īṣatkarālavāhābhyaḥ saridbhyaḥ ambukaṇāḥ iva
20. bhūbhṛtām avataṃsebhyas bhramarasrajaḥ uttasthuḥ
īṣatkarālavāhābhyaḥ saridbhyaḥ ambukaṇāḥ iva
20. From the peaks of the mountains, garlands of buzzing bees rose, much like drops of water emerge from rivers whose currents are slightly turbulent.
एवं प्रक्षुभिते तस्मिन्गृहे दाशरथे तदा ।
प्राप्ते वासरवृद्धत्वे शान्तशङ्खस्वने शनैः ॥ २१ ॥
evaṃ prakṣubhite tasmingṛhe dāśarathe tadā ,
prāpte vāsaravṛddhatve śāntaśaṅkhasvane śanaiḥ 21
21. evaṃ prakṣubhite tasmin gṛhe dāśarathe tadā
prāpte vāsaravṛddhatve śāntaśaṅkhasvane śanaiḥ
21. evaṃ tadā tasmin dāśarathe gṛhe prakṣubhite
vāsaravṛddhatve prāpte śāntaśaṅkhasvane śanaiḥ
21. Thus, when that house of Daśaratha became agitated, and as the day grew late, with the sounds of conch shells gradually quieting down.
संहरन्प्रस्तुतं वस्तु वचो मधुरवृत्तिमत् ।
उवाच मुनिशार्दूलः सभामध्ये रघूद्वहम् ॥ २२ ॥
saṃharanprastutaṃ vastu vaco madhuravṛttimat ,
uvāca muniśārdūlaḥ sabhāmadhye raghūdvaham 22
22. saṃharan prastutam vastu vacaḥ madhuravṛttimat
uvāca muniśārdūlaḥ sabhāmadhye raghūdvaham
22. muniśārdūlaḥ prastutam vastu saṃharan
madhuravṛttimat vacaḥ sabhāmadhye raghūdvaham uvāca
22. The foremost among sages, concluding the current topic and using words of a sweet nature, spoke to Rāma (raghūdvaha) in the midst of the assembly.
राघवानघ वाग्जालं मयैतत्प्रविसारितम् ।
तेन चित्तखगं बद्ध्वा क्रोडीकृत्यात्मतां नय ॥ २३ ॥
rāghavānagha vāgjālaṃ mayaitatpravisāritam ,
tena cittakhagaṃ baddhvā kroḍīkṛtyātmatāṃ naya 23
23. rāghava anagha vākjālam mayā etat pravīsaritam
tena cittakhagam baddhvā kroḍīkṛtya ātmatām naya
23. rāghava anagha mayā etat vāgjālam pravīsaritam
tena cittakhagam baddhvā kroḍīkṛtya ātmatām naya
23. O Rāghava, O sinless one! This intricate web of words has been spread by me. Use it to bind the bird that is your mind and bring it into the state of your true self (ātman).
कच्चिद्गृहीतो भवता मद्गिरामर्थ ईदृशः ।
त्यक्त्वा दुर्बोधमक्षीणो हंसेनेवाम्भसः पयः ॥ २४ ॥
kaccidgṛhīto bhavatā madgirāmartha īdṛśaḥ ,
tyaktvā durbodhamakṣīṇo haṃsenevāmbhasaḥ payaḥ 24
24. kaccit gṛhītaḥ bhavatā mat-girām arthaḥ īdṛśaḥ
tyaktvā durbodham akṣīṇaḥ haṃsena iva ambhasaḥ payaḥ
24. kaccit bhavatā mat-girām īdṛśaḥ arthaḥ gṛhītaḥ,
durbodham tyaktvā,
akṣīṇaḥ ambhasaḥ payaḥ haṃsena iva.
24. I hope you have understood the meaning of my words in this manner, just as a swan separates milk from water, abandoning the obscure and taking the unimpaired essence.
विचार्यैतदशेषेण स्वधियैवं पुनःपुनः ।
अनेनैव पथा साधो गन्तव्यं भवताधुना ॥ २५ ॥
vicāryaitadaśeṣeṇa svadhiyaivaṃ punaḥpunaḥ ,
anenaiva pathā sādho gantavyaṃ bhavatādhunā 25
25. vicārya etat aśeṣeṇa sva-dhiyā evam punaḥpunaḥ
anena eva pathā sādho gantavyam bhavatā adhunā
25. sādho,
etat aśeṣeṇa sva-dhiyā evam punaḥpunaḥ vicārya,
adhunā bhavatā anena eva pathā gantavyam.
25. O virtuous one, having deliberated on this completely and repeatedly with your own intellect, you must now proceed on this very path.
अनयैव धिया राम विहरन्नैव बध्यसे ।
अन्यथाधः पतस्याशु विन्ध्यखाते यथा गजः ॥ २६ ॥
anayaiva dhiyā rāma viharannaiva badhyase ,
anyathādhaḥ patasyāśu vindhyakhāte yathā gajaḥ 26
26. anayā eva dhiyā rāma viharan na eva badhyase
anyathā adhaḥ patasi āśu vindhya-khāte yathā gajaḥ
26. rāma,
anayā eva dhiyā viharan,
na eva badhyase.
anyathā,
yathā gajaḥ vindhya-khāte (patati),
(tathā tvam) āśu adhaḥ patasi.
26. O Rāma, by dwelling in this very understanding, you will certainly not be bound. Otherwise, you will quickly fall down, just like an elephant into a chasm in the Vindhya mountains.
सुगृहीतं धिया राम मद्वचो न करोषि चेत् ।
तत्पतस्यवटे त्यक्तदीपो वान्धो निशास्विव ॥ २७ ॥
sugṛhītaṃ dhiyā rāma madvaco na karoṣi cet ,
tatpatasyavaṭe tyaktadīpo vāndho niśāsviva 27
27. su-gṛhītam dhiyā rāma mat-vacaḥ na karoṣi cet tat
patasi avaṭe tyakta-dīpaḥ vā andhaḥ niśāsu iva
27. rāma,
cet dhiyā mat-vacaḥ su-gṛhītam na karoṣi,
tat (tvam) avaṭe patasi,
yathā andhaḥ tyakta-dīpaḥ niśāsu iva (patati).
27. O Rāma, if you do not grasp my words well with your intellect, then you will fall into a pit, just like a blind person who has abandoned his lamp in the darkness of the night.
असङ्गेन यथाप्राप्तो व्यवहारोऽस्य सिद्धये ।
इत्येव शास्त्रसिद्धान्तमादायोदारवान्भव ॥ २८ ॥
asaṅgena yathāprāpto vyavahāro'sya siddhaye ,
ityeva śāstrasiddhāntamādāyodāravānbhava 28
28. asaṅgena yathāprāptaḥ vyavahāraḥ asya siddhaye
iti eva śāstrasiddhāntam ādāya udāravān bhava
28. asaṅgena yathāprāptaḥ asya vyavahāraḥ siddhaye
iti eva śāstrasiddhāntam ādāya udāravān bhava
28. Let the activity (vyavahāra) that comes naturally, performed with non-attachment (asaṅga), be for its perfection. Thus, accepting this very doctrine (siddhānta) of the scriptures (śāstra), be magnanimous.
हे सभ्या हे महाराज रामलक्ष्मणभूमिपाः ।
सर्व एव भवन्तोऽद्य तावद्व्यापारमाह्निकम् ॥ २९ ॥
he sabhyā he mahārāja rāmalakṣmaṇabhūmipāḥ ,
sarva eva bhavanto'dya tāvadvyāpāramāhnikam 29
29. he sabhyāḥ he mahārāja rāmalakṣmaṇabhūmipāḥ
sarve eva bhavantaḥ adya tāvat vyāpāram āhnikam
29. he sabhyāḥ he mahārāja he rāmalakṣmaṇabhūmipāḥ
adya eva bhavantaḥ sarve tāvat āhnikam vyāpāram
29. O venerable members of the assembly! O great king! O kings (bhūmipāḥ) Rama and Lakshmana! All of you, indeed, today, (attend to) your daily activities (vyāpāra) and rituals (āhnika).
कुर्वन्त्वयं हि दिवसः प्रायः परिणताकृतिः ।
शेषं विचारयिष्यामो विचार्यं प्रातरागताः ॥ ३० ॥
kurvantvayaṃ hi divasaḥ prāyaḥ pariṇatākṛtiḥ ,
śeṣaṃ vicārayiṣyāmo vicāryaṃ prātarāgatāḥ 30
30. kurvantu ayam hi divasaḥ prāyaḥ pariṇatākṛtiḥ
śeṣam vicārayiṣyāmaḥ vicāryam prātaḥ āgatāḥ
30. ayam divasaḥ hi prāyaḥ pariṇatākṛtiḥ kurvantu
śeṣam vicārayiṣyāmaḥ vicāryam prātaḥ āgatāḥ
30. Let them perform (their duties), for this day is indeed mostly advanced. We shall deliberate on the rest (śeṣam), which is to be considered (vicāryam), when we return in the morning.
श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच ।
इत्युक्ता मुनिना तेन सा सर्वैव तदा सभा ।
प्रोत्तस्थौ पद्मवदना सविकासेव पद्मिनी ॥ ३१ ॥
śrīvālmīkiruvāca ,
ityuktā muninā tena sā sarvaiva tadā sabhā ,
prottasthau padmavadanā savikāseva padminī 31
31. śrīvālmīkiḥ uvāca iti uktā muninā tena sā sarvā eva

31. śrīvālmīkiḥ uvāca iti tena muninā uktā sā sarvā eva
sabhā tadā padmavadanā savikāsā padminī iva prottasthau
31. Shri Valmiki said: Thus addressed by that sage, the entire assembly (sabhā) then rose up, their faces like lotuses (padmavadanā), as if a lotus pond (padminī) blossoming (savikāsa).
राजानः स्तुतराजानः कृतराघववन्दनाः ।
परिष्टुते वसिष्ठे ते जग्मुरात्मनिवेशनम् ॥ ३२ ॥

32. The lauded kings, having offered their salutations to Rāghava, and after Vasiṣṭha had been highly praised, departed to their own residences.
विश्वामित्रेण सहितो वसिष्ठो गन्तुमाश्रमम् ।
उत्तस्थावासनाच्छ्रीमान्नमस्कृतनभश्चरः ॥ ३३ ॥

33. The glorious Vasiṣṭha, accompanied by Viśvāmitra, and who had been saluted by the celestial beings, rose from his seat to proceed to his hermitage.
दशरथप्रभृतयो राजानो मुनयस्तथा ।
यथानुरूपं वक्तारमनुगम्य मुनिं चिरम् ॥ ३४ ॥
daśarathaprabhṛtayo rājāno munayastathā ,
yathānurūpaṃ vaktāramanugamya muniṃ ciram 34

34. King Daśaratha and others, as well as the sages, having followed the sage, the speaker, for a suitable length of time...
आपृच्छ्य केचिद्गगनं ययुः केचिद्वनान्तरम् ।
केचिद्राजगृहं सन्तो भृङ्गाः पद्मोत्थिता इव ॥ ३५ ॥
āpṛcchya kecidgaganaṃ yayuḥ kecidvanāntaram ,
kecidrājagṛhaṃ santo bhṛṅgāḥ padmotthitā iva 35
35. āpṛcchya kecit gaganam yayuḥ kecit vana-antaram |
kecit rājagṛham santaḥ bhṛṅgāḥ padma-utthitāḥ iva
35. āpṛcchya kecit gaganam yayuḥ kecit vanāntaram
kecit santaḥ rājagṛham bhṛṅgāḥ padma-utthitāḥ iva
35. After King Daśaratha and others, as well as the sages, had followed the sage, the speaker (Vasiṣṭha), for an appropriate amount of time and had taken their leave, some ascended to the sky, some went to other forests, while others among these worthy people returned to the royal palace, just like bees rising from a lotus.
वसिष्ठपादयोस्त्यक्त्वा पुष्पाञ्जलिमनाविलम् ।
दारैरनुगतो राजा प्रविवेश गृहान्तरम् ॥ ३६ ॥
vasiṣṭhapādayostyaktvā puṣpāñjalimanāvilam ,
dārairanugato rājā praviveśa gṛhāntaram 36
36. vasiṣṭha-pādayoḥ tyaktvā puṣpāñjalim anāvilam
dāraiḥ anugataḥ rājā praviveśa gṛha-antaram
36. rājā dāraiḥ anugataḥ vasiṣṭha-pādayoḥ anāvilam
puṣpāñjalim tyaktvā gṛha-antaram praviveśa
36. Having offered a pure handful of flowers at the feet of Vasiṣṭha, the king, accompanied by his wives, entered the inner apartments.
रामलक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्नाः प्राप्तस्य स्वाश्रमं गुरोः ।
अभ्यर्च्य चरणौ भक्त्या त्वाजग्मुर्नृपमन्दिरम् ॥ ३७ ॥
rāmalakṣmaṇaśatrughnāḥ prāptasya svāśramaṃ guroḥ ,
abhyarcya caraṇau bhaktyā tvājagmurnṛpamandiram 37
37. rāma-lakṣmaṇa-śatrughnāḥ prāptasya sva-āśramam guroḥ
abhyarcya caraṇau bhaktyā tvā ājagmuḥ nṛpa-mandiram
37. rāma-lakṣmaṇa-śatrughnāḥ sva-āśramam prāptasya guroḥ
caraṇau bhaktyā abhyarcya tvā nṛpa-mandiram ājagmuḥ
37. Having worshipped with devotion (bhakti) the feet of their preceptor (guru) who had reached his own hermitage, Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Śatrughna then came to the king's palace.
सदनानि समासाद्य श्रोतारः सर्व एव ते ।
सस्नुरानर्चुरभ्येयुर्देवान्विप्रान्पितृंस्तथा ॥ ३८ ॥
sadanāni samāsādya śrotāraḥ sarva eva te ,
sasnurānarcurabhyeyurdevānviprānpitṛṃstathā 38
38. sadanāni samāsādya śrotāraḥ sarve eva te sasnuḥ
ānarcuḥ abhyeyuḥ devān viprān pitṝn tathā
38. te sarve śrotāraḥ sadanāni samāsādya sasnuḥ
ānarcuḥ devān viprān pitṝn tathā abhyeyuḥ
38. All those listeners, having reached their homes, bathed, worshipped the gods, brahmins, and ancestors, and then approached (them).
यथाक्रमं स्वभृत्यान्तैर्विप्राद्यैश्च परिच्छदैः ।
समं बुभुजिरे भोज्यं वर्णधर्मक्रमोदितम् ॥ ३९ ॥
yathākramaṃ svabhṛtyāntairviprādyaiśca paricchadaiḥ ,
samaṃ bubhujire bhojyaṃ varṇadharmakramoditam 39
39. yathā-kramam sva-bhṛtya-antaiḥ vipra-ādyaiḥ ca paricchadaiḥ
samam bubhujire bhojyam varṇa-dharma-krama-uditam
39. yathā-kramam sva-bhṛtya-antaiḥ vipra-ādyaiḥ ca paricchadaiḥ
samam varṇa-dharma-krama-uditam bhojyam bubhujire
39. In due order, together with their own servants, brahmins, and other attendants, they ate the meal prescribed according to the principles (dharma) for social classes.
अस्तं गते दिनकरे समं दिवसकर्मभिः ।
अभ्यागते रात्रिकरे समं रजनिकर्मभिः ॥ ४० ॥

abhyāgate rātrikare samaṃ rajanikarmabhiḥ 40

40. When the sun had set, marking the conclusion of the day's activities, and when the moon had appeared, bringing with it the night's activities.
स्थित्वा तल्पेषु कौशेयशयनेष्वासनेषु च ।
भूचरा मुनिराजानो राजपुत्रा महर्षयः ॥ ४१ ॥
sthitvā talpeṣu kauśeyaśayaneṣvāsaneṣu ca ,
bhūcarā munirājāno rājaputrā maharṣayaḥ 41

41. Having settled on couches, silken beds, and seats, the earth-dwellers, royal sages, princes, and great sages (maharṣi)...
संसारोत्तरणोपायं वसिष्ठवदनेरितम् ।
यथावदेकाग्रधियश्चिन्तयामासुरादृताः ॥ ४२ ॥
saṃsārottaraṇopāyaṃ vasiṣṭhavadaneritam ,
yathāvadekāgradhiyaścintayāmāsurādṛtāḥ 42
42. saṃsārottaraṇopāyaṃ vasiṣṭhavadaneritam |
yathāvat ekāgradhiyaḥ cintayāmāsuḥ ādṛtāḥ
42. ādṛtāḥ ekāgradhiyaḥ yathāvat vasiṣṭhavadaneritam
saṃsārottaraṇopāyaṃ cintayāmāsuḥ
42. With focused minds and respectfully, they duly contemplated the means to transcend the cycle of rebirth (saṃsāra), which had been uttered by Vasiṣṭha.
ततः प्रहरमात्रेण निद्रामामुद्रिताननाः ।
उत्स्वप्नसुन्दरीमीयुः पद्मा इव दिनार्थिनः ॥ ४३ ॥
tataḥ praharamātreṇa nidrāmāmudritānanāḥ ,
utsvapnasundarīmīyuḥ padmā iva dinārthinaḥ 43
43. tataḥ praharamātreṇa nidrāmudritānanāḥ |
utsvapnasundarīm īyuḥ padmāḥ iva dinārthinaḥ
43. tataḥ praharamātreṇa nidrāmudritānanāḥ te

43. Then, within a single watch, with their faces closed in sleep, they gracefully entered into the realm of beautiful dreams, like lotuses (padmā) which yearn for the day.
रामलक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्नाः प्रहरत्रयमेव तत् ।
वासिष्ठमुपदेशं ते चिन्तयामासुरक्षतम् ॥ ४४ ॥
rāmalakṣmaṇaśatrughnāḥ praharatrayameva tat ,
vāsiṣṭhamupadeśaṃ te cintayāmāsurakṣatam 44
44. rāmalakṣmaṇaśatrughnāḥ praharatrayam eva tat
vāsiṣṭham upadeśam te cintayām āsuḥ akṣatam
44. rāmalakṣmaṇaśatrughnāḥ te praharatrayam eva
tat vāsiṣṭham akṣatam upadeśam cintayām āsuḥ
44. Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Śatrughna contemplated that flawless instruction (upadeśa) of Vasiṣṭha for exactly three hours.
प्रहरस्यार्धमात्रं ते तत आमुद्रितेक्षणाः ।
उत्स्वप्नमाययुर्निद्रां क्षणाद्विद्रावितश्रमाम् ॥ ४५ ॥
praharasyārdhamātraṃ te tata āmudritekṣaṇāḥ ,
utsvapnamāyayurnidrāṃ kṣaṇādvidrāvitaśramām 45
45. praharasya ardhamātram te tataḥ āmudrita īkṣaṇāḥ
utsvapnam āyayuḥ nidrām kṣaṇāt vidrāvitaśramām
45. tataḥ te āmudrita īkṣaṇāḥ praharasya ardhamātram
kṣaṇāt vidrāvitaśramām utsvapnam nidrām āyayuḥ
45. Then, with eyes closed, for only half a three-hour period, they attained a deep, dreamless sleep (nidrā) that quickly dispelled their fatigue.
इति शुभमनसां विवेकभाजामधिगतसारतयोदिताशयानाम् ।
अभजत विरतिं तदा त्रियामा मलिननिशाकरवक्रतां जगाम ॥ ४६ ॥
iti śubhamanasāṃ vivekabhājāmadhigatasāratayoditāśayānām ,
abhajata viratiṃ tadā triyāmā malinaniśākaravakratāṃ jagāma 46
46. iti śubhamanasām vivekabhājām adhigatasāratayā uditāśayānām
abhajata viratim tadā triyāmā malinaniśākaravakratām jagāma

46. Thus, for those whose minds were pure, who possessed discernment (viveka), and whose intentions had awakened through their comprehension of the essence, the night (triyāmā) then came to an end and acquired the dim, distorted aspect of the moon.
