वातवर्षहिमोत्पातपातभग्ने धरातले ।
जडवेगोऽगमद्वृद्धिं कलाविव महीपतिः ॥ १ ॥

1. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca.
vātavarṣahimotpātapātabhagne dharātale jaḍavegaḥ kalāḥ iva mahīpatiḥ vṛddhim agamat.
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: On the earth (dharātala), shattered by the impact of calamities, winds, rains, and snows, the sluggish current (of water) increased, just as a king (mahīpati) grows in his powers (kalāḥ).
गङ्गाप्रवाहपतितधारापातविवर्धितः ।
सरित्सहस्रैः सहसा मेरुमन्दरभासुरैः ॥ २ ॥

saritsahasraiḥ sahasā merumandarabhāsuraiḥ 2

2. (saḥ jaḍavegaḥ) gaṅgāpravāhapatitadhārāpātavivardhitaḥ (abhūt),
sahasā merumandarabhasuraiḥ saritsahasraiḥ (ca).
2. It (the current) was increased by the falling torrents that plunged into the Gaṅgā's stream, along with thousands of other rivers, suddenly shining like Mount Meru and Mandara.
आदित्यपथसंप्राप्तकन्दरो जडमन्थरः ।
एकार्णवः समुच्छून आसीन्मूर्ख इवेश्वरः ॥ ३ ॥

ekārṇavaḥ samucchūna āsīnmūrkha iveśvaraḥ 3

3. (saḥ jaḍavegaḥ) ādityapathasaṃprāptakandaraḥ jaḍamantharaḥ ekārṇavaḥ samucchūnaḥ mūrkhaḥ iva īśvaraḥ āsīt.
3. With its caverns reaching the path of the sun, sluggish and slow, it became a single ocean, greatly swollen, just like a foolish ruler (īśvara) (swells with power and becomes sluggish).
विपुलावर्तवृत्त्यात्तविवृत्ताद्रिजरत्तृणः ।
स्फुरत्तुङ्गतरङ्गाग्रनिगीर्णादित्यमण्डलः ॥ ४ ॥

sphurattuṅgataraṅgāgranigīrṇādityamaṇḍalaḥ 4

4. The deluge was one whose mountains, things growing from them, and old grass were seized and dislodged by the action of its vast whirlpools, and whose disc of the sun was swallowed by the tops of its shimmering, high waves.
मेरुमन्दरकैलासविन्ध्यसह्यजलेचरः ।
गलितावनिपङ्कान्तर्लीनव्यालमृणालकः ॥ ५ ॥

5. The deluge was one whose aquatic dwellers were the Meru, Mandara, Kailasa, Vindhya, and Sahya mountains, and within whose decayed earth-mud were hidden snakes and lotus stems.
अर्धदग्धद्रुमवनव्यूहशैवलसंकटः ।
त्रैलोक्यभस्मसंसृष्ट आसीत्कर्दमकुत्सितः ॥ ६ ॥

trailokyabhasmasaṃsṛṣṭa āsītkardamakutsitaḥ 6
6. ardha-dagdha-druma-vana-vyūha-śaivala-saṅkaṭaḥ

6. The deluge was one dense with masses of half-burnt forest trees and algae, and mingled with the ashes of the three worlds. It was abominable due to mud.
नभःस्तम्भवृहद्धानोत्तालभास्करपुष्करः ।
धाराजालमहाम्भोदविलीननलिनीदलः ॥ ७ ॥
nabhaḥstambhavṛhaddhānottālabhāskarapuṣkaraḥ ,
dhārājālamahāmbhodavilīnanalinīdalaḥ 7
7. nabhaḥ-stambha-bṛhat-dhanu-uttāla-bhāskara-puṣkaraḥ

7. The deluge was one whose sky-pillar, great and bow-shaped, contained tremendous sun-like waters, and whose lotus leaves were completely dissolved into the great clouds of its networks of torrents.
डिण्डीरपर्वतप्रान्तनददुन्मत्तवारिदः ।
भ्रमदिन्द्रानिलार्केन्दुपुरपत्तनपूरणैः ॥ ८ ॥

8. It is a frenzied, roaring water-mass at the edges of foam-mountains, which fills and overwhelms cities, towns, and even the whirling Indra, wind, sun, and moon.
काष्ठवत्प्रोह्यमाणोग्रसुरासुरजनोत्करः ।
शनैः क्रमोच्छूनतया लिहन्नादित्यमण्डलम् ॥ ९ ॥

9. It is a multitude of fierce gods, demons, and people being swept away like logs of wood; slowly, by its gradual swelling, it licks the orb of the sun.
तरत्तारतरारावधाराधरसमुद्भवैः ।
बुद्बुदैः परिसंदिग्धप्रोह्यमाणमहाचलः ॥ १० ॥
tarattāratarārāvadhārādharasamudbhavaiḥ ,
budbudaiḥ parisaṃdigdhaprohyamāṇamahācalaḥ 10

10. By the bubbles born from the exceedingly loud, roaring, surging water-masses, it causes great mountains to be swept away in a way that makes their presence doubtful (amidst the deluge).
भ्रमद्बुद्बुदविश्रान्तभ्रान्तकल्पान्तवारिदः ।
उत्तालैस्तैरनाधारैः पश्यन्नपरवारिदम् ॥ ११ ॥

11. This water-mass of cosmic dissolution, appearing to rest and wander amidst whirling bubbles, beholds another water-mass through those immense, unsupported [waves/bubbles].
महाप्रवाहवार्योघघोषघुंघुमिताम्बरः ।
एकप्रवाहमहितसव्योमकुलपर्वतः ॥ १२ ॥

12. The sky hums with the roar of the massive flood of water from its mighty current. It is like a principal mountain, made magnificent by its single, sky-encompassing flow.
चण्डवातकृतापूर्वजलौघकुलपर्वतैः ।
महाघुरघुरारावघर्घरोग्रमहारयः ॥ १३ ॥
caṇḍavātakṛtāpūrvajalaughakulaparvataiḥ ,
mahāghuraghurārāvaghargharogramahārayaḥ 13

13. It is a mighty, impetuous current, terrible with its rumbling and gurgling roar, manifesting with principal mountains of unprecedented water floods, themselves formed by fierce winds.
ब्रह्माण्डखण्डसंघट्टपरावृत्तिभिरुद्धतः ।
कुर्वन्योजनलक्षाणि विततान्युन्नतानि च ॥ १४ ॥
brahmāṇḍakhaṇḍasaṃghaṭṭaparāvṛttibhiruddhataḥ ,
kurvanyojanalakṣāṇi vitatānyunnatāni ca 14

14. Rising violently, it creates vast and lofty expanses of hundreds of thousands of yojanas through the collisions and churning of fragments from cosmic eggs (universes).
तृणैरिव तरङ्गेषु दोलान्दोलनमद्रिभिः ।
कुर्वद्भिरुपलाघातभग्नभास्करमण्डलः ॥ १५ ॥
tṛṇairiva taraṅgeṣu dolāndolanamadribhiḥ ,
kurvadbhirupalāghātabhagnabhāskaramaṇḍalaḥ 15
15. tṛṇaiḥ iva taraṅgeṣu dolāandolanam adribhiḥ
kurvadbhiḥ upalāghāta-bhagna-bhāskara-maṇḍalaḥ
15. upalāghāta-bhagna-bhāskara-maṇḍalaḥ adribhiḥ
kurvadbhiḥ dolāandolanam tṛṇaiḥ iva taraṅgeṣu
15. Its solar disc is shattered by the impact of rocks, as mountains, tossed like mere blades of grass in its waves, create a swaying motion.
शून्यब्रह्माण्डविषुलजलघातकुलायके ।
नीलानचलकाकोलाञ्जहन्सलिलजालकैः ॥ १६ ॥
śūnyabrahmāṇḍaviṣulajalaghātakulāyake ,
nīlānacalakākolāñjahansalilajālakaiḥ 16
16. śūnyabrahmāṇḍaviṣulajalaghātakuḷāyake
nīlānacalakākolān jahan salilajālakaiḥ

16. In the empty cosmos (brahmāṇḍa), which serves as a nest for the immense impacts of water, (it) removing the blue, mountain-like *kākolas* (mythical serpent/demon) with its networks of water.
मृतामृतमहद्भूतमज्जनोन्मज्जनाकुलान् ।
तरंगमकरावर्तप्रतिबिम्बान्वितानिव ॥ १७ ॥
mṛtāmṛtamahadbhūtamajjanonmajjanākulān ,
taraṃgamakarāvartapratibimbānvitāniva 17
17. mṛtāmṛtamahadbhūtamajjanonmajjanākulān

17. (They were) agitated by the immersion and emergence of great beings, both mortal and immortal, and (appeared) as if endowed with reflections of waves, sea-monsters (makara), and whirlpools.
मृतशिष्टान्पुरभ्रष्टान्फेनाद्रितटिकोटिषु ।
दधज्जलबलश्रान्तांस्त्रिदशान्मशकानिव ॥ १८ ॥
mṛtaśiṣṭānpurabhraṣṭānphenādritaṭikoṭiṣu ,
dadhajjalabalaśrāntāṃstridaśānmaśakāniva 18
18. mṛtaśiṣṭān purabhraṣṭān phenādritaṭikoṭiṣu
dadhat jalabalaśrāntān tridaśān maśakān iva
18. dadhat phenādritaṭikoṭiṣu mṛtaśiṣṭān purabhraṣṭān

18. Holding those survivors of the dead and those expelled from cities on the peaks of banks made of foam-mountains, (it) bore the gods, weary from the water's force, as if they were mere mosquitoes.
विपुलाद्यतनाकाशविपुलानम्बुबुदुदान् ।
सद्वस्रसंख्यान्कलयंल्लोचनानीव वासवः ॥ १९ ॥
vipulādyatanākāśavipulānambubududān ,
sadvasrasaṃkhyānkalayaṃllocanānīva vāsavaḥ 19
19. vipuḷādyatanākāśavipuḷān ambubududān

19. The ocean, reckoning the water-bubbles – which were immense, vast as the present (ākāśa) sky, and countless as fine garments – as if they were the eyes of Vāsava (Indra).
शरद्व्योमसमाभ्गेगैर्वलद्भिर्बुद्गुदेक्षणैः ।
पश्यन्निव नदीधारान्भेघानाताम्रपूरकान् ॥ २० ॥
śaradvyomasamābhgegairvaladbhirbudgudekṣaṇaiḥ ,
paśyanniva nadīdhārānbheghānātāmrapūrakān 20
20. śaradv-vyoma-samābhgegaiḥ valadbhiḥ budgude-kṣaṇaiḥ

20. As if seeing the river currents and the clouds - which were filling with a coppery hue - with its vast expanse resembling the autumn sky, with its churning movements, and with its bubble-like eyes.
पुष्करावर्तकाभ्राणां बहुभिर्वीचिमण्डलैः ।
कुर्वन्नालिङ्गनानीव सपक्षाद्रिवदुत्थितैः ॥ २१ ॥
puṣkarāvartakābhrāṇāṃ bahubhirvīcimaṇḍalaiḥ ,
kurvannāliṅganānīva sapakṣādrivadutthitaiḥ 21
21. puṣkarāvartakābhrāṇām bahubhiḥ vīci-maṇḍalaiḥ

21. Making, as it were, embraces of the Puṣkarāvartaka clouds, by means of its numerous circles of waves that have risen like winged mountains.
त्रिजगद्ग्राससंतृप्तः प्रगायन्निव घर्घरैः ।
स्वैर्नृत्यन्निव चोग्राद्रिकटकैर्वीचिदोर्द्रुमैः ॥ २२ ॥
trijagadgrāsasaṃtṛptaḥ pragāyanniva ghargharaiḥ ,
svairnṛtyanniva cogrādrikaṭakairvīcidordrumaiḥ 22
22. tri-jagad-grāsa-saṃtṛptaḥ pragāyan iva ghargharaiḥ
svaiḥ nṛtyan iva ca ugrā-dri-kaṭakaiḥ vīci-dordrumaiḥ

22. Fully satisfied by devouring the three worlds, it sings, as it were, with its rumbling sounds; and it dances, as if, with its own fierce mountain-like ridges and with its wave-like arm-trees.
नदीधाराधरैरूर्ध्वे मध्ये दग्धैर्धराधरैः ।
अधो धराधरैर्नागैरधरः पङ्कगैर्वृतः ॥ २३ ॥
nadīdhārādharairūrdhve madhye dagdhairdharādharaiḥ ,
adho dharādharairnāgairadharaḥ paṅkagairvṛtaḥ 23
23. nadīdhārādharaiḥ ūrdhve madhye dagdhaiḥ dharādharaiḥ

23. Above, it is (associated) with those that bear river currents (clouds). In the middle, it is (associated) with scorched mountains. Below, it is (associated) with mountains and nāgas (serpent-beings), and its lower part is surrounded by creatures moving in mud.
धारात्रिपथगापूरैर्निपतद्भिर्निरन्तरम् ।
मग्नोन्मग्नो ह्यमानाद्रिशृङ्गडिण्डीरबुद्बुदः ॥ २४ ॥
dhārātripathagāpūrairnipatadbhirnirantaram ,
magnonmagno hyamānādriśṛṅgaḍiṇḍīrabudbudaḥ 24
24. dhārātripthagāpūraiḥ nipatadbhiḥ nirantaram
magnaḥ unmagnaḥ hyamānādriśṛṅgadiṇḍīrabudbudaḥ

24. By the continuous onslaught of currents from the three-pathed river (Ganges), whose mountain peaks, being swept away, alternately submerge and emerge like foam and bubbles.
उह्यमानदलत्स्वर्गखण्डक्रन्दन्नभश्चरः ।
वहद्विद्याधरीवृन्दपद्मिनीसुन्दरान्तरः ॥ २५ ॥
uhyamānadalatsvargakhaṇḍakrandannabhaścaraḥ ,
vahadvidyādharīvṛndapadminīsundarāntaraḥ 25

25. It is characterized by celestial beings (nabhaścara), wailing as fragments of heaven split and are swept away; and its beautiful inner expanse, like a lotus pond (padminī), carries along groups of Vidyādharīs (celestial female beings).
एकार्णवपयःपूरैर्घर्घरारावरंहसि ।
त्रैलोक्यखण्डसंहारे प्रोह्यमाणे महाम्भसि ॥ २६ ॥
ekārṇavapayaḥpūrairghargharārāvaraṃhasi ,
trailokyakhaṇḍasaṃhāre prohyamāṇe mahāmbhasi 26
26. ekārṇavapayaḥpūraiḥ ghargarārāvaraṃhasi

26. In the great deluge (mahāmbhas), which was being entirely swept away (prohyamāṇe) at the destruction (saṃhāra) of the fragments of the three worlds (trailokya), by floods of water resembling a single ocean (ekārṇava), and with the swiftness (raṃhas) of a roaring (ghargarārāva) sound.
नासीत्कश्चित्परित्राता हन्ताऽवीचिवशोऽपि च ।
शक्नोति कः परित्रातुं कालेन कवलीकृतम् ॥ २७ ॥
nāsītkaścitparitrātā hantā'vīcivaśo'pi ca ,
śaknoti kaḥ paritrātuṃ kālena kavalīkṛtam 27
27. na āsīt kaścit paritrātā hanta avīcivasaḥ api
ca śaknoti kaḥ paritrātum kālena kavalīkṛtam
27. na kaścit paritrātā āsīt hanta avīcivasaḥ api
ca kaḥ śaknoti kālena kavalīkṛtam paritrātum
27. There was no protector (paritrātā) at all; alas, even one who was subject to the relentless (current of dissolution) could not protect. Indeed, who can save that which has been devoured by time (kāla)?
नाकाशमासीन्न दिगन्त आसीदधोऽपि नासीन्न तदूर्ध्वमासीत् ।
भूतं न आसीन्न च सर्ग आसीदासीत्परं केवलमेव वारि ॥ २८ ॥
nākāśamāsīnna diganta āsīdadho'pi nāsīnna tadūrdhvamāsīt ,
bhūtaṃ na āsīnna ca sarga āsīdāsītparaṃ kevalameva vāri 28
28. na ākāśam āsīt na digantaḥ āsīt
adhaḥ api na āsīt na tat ūrdhvam
āsīt bhūtam na āsīt na ca sargaḥ
