एतत्ते कथितं ब्रह्मन्यथास्मि यदिहास्मि च ।
त्वदाज्ञामात्रसिद्ध्यर्थं धार्ष्ट्येन ज्ञानपारग ॥ १ ॥

etatte kathitaṃ brahmanyathāsmi yadihāsmi ca ,
tvadājñāmātrasiddhyarthaṃ dhārṣṭyena jñānapāraga 1
1. bhūśuṇḍaḥ uvāca etat te kathitam
brahman yathā asmi yat iha
asmi ca tvat-ājñā-mātra-siddhi-artham
dhārṣṭyena jñāna-pāraga
1. bhūśuṇḍaḥ uvāca.
brahman jñāna-pāraga te etat yathā asmi yat ca iha asmi dhārṣṭyena tvat-ājñā-mātra-siddhi-artham kathitam
1. Bhūśuṇḍa spoke: O venerable one (brahman), O master of knowledge, I have boldly recounted to you my current state and identity here, solely for the purpose of fulfilling your command.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
अहो नु चित्रं भगवन्भवता भूषणं श्रुतेः ।
आत्मोदन्तः प्रकथितः परं विस्मयकारणम् ॥ २ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
aho nu citraṃ bhagavanbhavatā bhūṣaṇaṃ śruteḥ ,
ātmodantaḥ prakathitaḥ paraṃ vismayakāraṇam 2
2. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca aho nu citram bhagavan bhavatā bhūṣaṇam
śruteḥ ātma-udantaḥ prakathitaḥ param vismaya-kāraṇam
2. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca aho nu bhagavan citram bhavatā śruteḥ
bhūṣaṇam ātma-udantaḥ prakathitaḥ param vismaya-kāraṇam
2. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: "Oh, venerable one, how truly marvelous! The narration of your own spiritual journey (ātman), which you have recounted, is an embellishment to the sacred tradition (śruti) and a profound source of wonder."
धन्यास्ते ये महात्मानमत्यन्तचिरजीवनम् ।
भवन्तं परिपश्यन्ति द्वितीयमिव पद्मजम् ॥ ३ ॥
dhanyāste ye mahātmānamatyantacirajīvanam ,
bhavantaṃ paripaśyanti dvitīyamiva padmajam 3
3. dhanyāḥ te ye mahātmānam atyanta-cira-jīvanam
bhavantam paripaśyanti dvitīyam iva padma-jam
3. te ye bhavantam mahātmānam atyanta-cira-jīvanam
dvitīyam padma-jam iva paripaśyanti dhanyāḥ
3. Blessed are those who behold you, the great soul (mahātman) who possesses an exceedingly long life, perceiving you as a second Brahmā (padmajam).
यावदद्य दृशो धन्याः स्वात्मोदन्तमखण्डितम् ।
यथावत्पावनं बुद्धेः सर्वं कथितवानसि ॥ ४ ॥
yāvadadya dṛśo dhanyāḥ svātmodantamakhaṇḍitam ,
yathāvatpāvanaṃ buddheḥ sarvaṃ kathitavānasi 4
4. yāvat adya dṛśaḥ dhanyāḥ sva-ātma-udantam akhaṇḍitam
yathāvat pāvanam buddheḥ sarvam kathitavān asi
4. adya yāvat dṛśaḥ dhanyāḥ bhavān sva-ātma-udantam
akhaṇḍitam buddheḥ yathāvat pāvanam sarvam kathitavān asi
4. Today, our eyes are indeed blessed, because you have recounted your entire, uninterrupted spiritual journey (ātman), which is truly purifying for the intellect.
प्रभातं दिक्षु सर्वासु दृष्टा विबुधभूतयः ।
भवानिव जगत्यस्मिन्न महानवलोकितः ॥ ५ ॥
prabhātaṃ dikṣu sarvāsu dṛṣṭā vibudhabhūtayaḥ ,
bhavāniva jagatyasminna mahānavalokitaḥ 5
5. prabhātam dikṣu sarvāsu dṛṣṭā vibudha-bhūtayaḥ
bhavān iva jagati asmin na mahān avalokitaḥ
5. prabhātam sarvāsu dikṣu vibudha-bhūtayaḥ dṛṣṭāḥ
asmin jagati bhavān iva mahān na avalokitaḥ
5. Dawn has broken, and divine manifestations (vibudhabhūtayaḥ) have been observed in all directions. However, in this world, no one as great as you has been seen.
कथंचित्प्राप्यते कश्चिद्भ्रान्त्वेव हि महाजनः ।
न भवानिव भव्यात्मा सुलभो जगति क्वचित् ॥ ६ ॥
kathaṃcitprāpyate kaścidbhrāntveva hi mahājanaḥ ,
na bhavāniva bhavyātmā sulabho jagati kvacit 6
6. kathaṃcit prāpyate kaścit bhrāntvā iva hi mahājanaḥ
na bhavān iva bhavyātmā sulabhaḥ jagati kvacit
6. kathaṃcit bhrāntvā iva hi kaścit mahājanaḥ prāpyate
jagati kvacit bhavān iva bhavyātmā na sulabhaḥ
6. A great person (mahājana) is somehow found, as if after much wandering. However, a noble soul (bhavyātmā) like you is certainly not easily found anywhere in the world.
वंशखण्डे हि कस्मिंश्चिज्जायते मौक्तिकं यथा ।
जगत्खण्डे हि कस्मिंश्चिद्दृश्यते त्वादृशस्तथा ॥ ७ ॥
vaṃśakhaṇḍe hi kasmiṃścijjāyate mauktikaṃ yathā ,
jagatkhaṇḍe hi kasmiṃściddṛśyate tvādṛśastathā 7
7. vaṃśakhaṇḍe hi kasmiṃcit jāyate mauktikaṃ yathā
jagatkhaṇḍe hi kasmiṃcit dṛśyate tvādṛśaḥ tathā
7. yathā kasmiṃcit vaṃśakhaṇḍe hi mauktikaṃ jāyate
tathā kasmiṃcit jagatkhaṇḍe hi tvādṛśaḥ dṛśyate
7. Just as a pearl is indeed born in some particular section of bamboo, similarly, one like you is seen in some particular part of the world.
मया तु सुमहत्कार्यमद्य संपादितं शुभम् ।
पुण्यदेहविमुक्तात्मा यद्भवानवलोकितः ॥ ८ ॥
mayā tu sumahatkāryamadya saṃpāditaṃ śubham ,
puṇyadehavimuktātmā yadbhavānavalokitaḥ 8
8. mayā tu sumahat kāryam adya saṃpāditaṃ śubham
puṇyadehavimuktātmā yat bhavān avalokitaḥ
8. adya mayā tu sumahat śubham kāryam saṃpāditaṃ
yat puṇyadehavimuktātmā bhavān avalokitaḥ
8. Indeed, a very great and auspicious deed has been accomplished by me today, because you, a soul (ātman) liberated from a meritorious body, have been seen.
तदस्तु तव कल्याणं प्रविशात्मगुहां शुभाम् ।
मध्याह्नसमयो यन्मे व्रजामि सुरमन्दिरम् ॥ ९ ॥
tadastu tava kalyāṇaṃ praviśātmaguhāṃ śubhām ,
madhyāhnasamayo yanme vrajāmi suramandiram 9
9. tat astu tava kalyāṇaṃ praviśa ātmaguhāṃ śubhām
madhyāhnasamayaḥ yat me vrajāmi suramandiram
9. tat tava kalyāṇaṃ astu śubhām ātmaguhāṃ praviśa
yat me madhyāhnasamayaḥ suramandiram vrajāmi
9. Therefore, may you have welfare. Enter your sacred inner cave (ātmaguhā). Because it is midday, I must go to the temple of the gods.
इत्याकर्ण्य भुशुण्डोऽसौ जग्राहोत्थाय पादपात् ।
संकल्पिताभ्यां हस्ताभ्यामुपात्तं हेमपल्लवम् ॥ १० ॥
ityākarṇya bhuśuṇḍo'sau jagrāhotthāya pādapāt ,
saṃkalpitābhyāṃ hastābhyāmupāttaṃ hemapallavam 10
10. iti ākarṇya bhuśuṇḍaḥ asau jagrāha utthāya pādapāt
saṅkalpitābhyām hastābhyām upāttam hemapallavam
10. asau bhuśuṇḍaḥ iti ākarṇya pādapāt utthāya
saṅkalpitābhyām hastābhyām upāttam hemapallavam jagrāha
10. Having heard this, Bhūśuṇḍa rose from the tree. With his two hands, which he had created by his will, he took the golden leaf that had manifested.
कल्पवृक्षलतापुष्पकेसरेण हिमत्विषा ।
तत्पात्रं मौक्तिकार्घ्येण पूरयामास पूर्णधीः ॥ ११ ॥
kalpavṛkṣalatāpuṣpakesareṇa himatviṣā ,
tatpātraṃ mauktikārghyeṇa pūrayāmāsa pūrṇadhīḥ 11
11. kalpavṛkṣalatāpuṣpakasareṇa himatviṣā tat
pātram mauktikārghyeṇa pūrayāmāsa pūrṇadhīḥ
11. pūrṇadhīḥ himatviṣā kalpavṛkṣalatāpuṣpakasareṇa
mauktikārghyeṇa tat pātram pūrayāmāsa
11. The perfectly intelligent one filled that vessel with an offering of pearls, using the cool-radiant filaments of a flower from a wish-fulfilling tree (kalpavṛkṣa) creeper.
तेनार्घ्यपाद्यपुष्पेण त्रिनेत्रमिव मामसौ ।
आपादमस्तकं भक्त्या पूजयामास पूर्वजः ॥ १२ ॥
tenārghyapādyapuṣpeṇa trinetramiva māmasau ,
āpādamastakaṃ bhaktyā pūjayāmāsa pūrvajaḥ 12
12. tena arghyapādyapuṣpeṇa trinetram iva mām asau
āpādamastakam bhaktyā pūjayāmāsa pūrvajaḥ
12. asau pūrvajaḥ tena arghyapādyapuṣpeṇa trinetram
iva mām āpādamastakam bhaktyā pūjayāmāsa
12. With that offering of respectful water for the feet and flowers, that ancient one (Bhūśuṇḍa) worshipped me from foot to head with devotion (bhakti), as if I were the three-eyed (Śiva).
अनुव्रज्याकदर्थेन खगेन्द्रालमिति ब्रुवन् ।
विष्टरादहमुत्थाय ततः खगवदाप्लुतः ॥ १३ ॥
anuvrajyākadarthena khagendrālamiti bruvan ,
viṣṭarādahamutthāya tataḥ khagavadāplutaḥ 13
13. anuvrajyākadarthenena khagendra alam iti bruvan
viṣṭarāt aham utthāya tataḥ khagavat āplutaḥ
13. aham 'khagendra,
alam' iti bruvan anuvrajyākadarthenena viṣṭarāt utthāya tataḥ khagavat āplutaḥ
13. Saying, 'O king of birds, enough of this trouble (akadarthenena) of following me!', I rose from my seat and then soared (āpluta) like a bird.
व्योम्नि योजनमात्रं तु मदनुव्रज्यया गतः ।
करं करेणावष्टभ्य बलात्संरोधितः खगः ॥ १४ ॥
vyomni yojanamātraṃ tu madanuvrajyayā gataḥ ,
karaṃ kareṇāvaṣṭabhya balātsaṃrodhitaḥ khagaḥ 14
14. vyomni yojanamātram tu madanuvrajyayā gataḥ
karam kareṇa avaṣṭabhya balāt saṃrodhitaḥ khagaḥ
14. khagaḥ madanuvrajyayā vyomni yojanamātram gataḥ
tu karam kareṇa avaṣṭabhya balāt saṃrodhitaḥ
14. Although the bird had accompanied me for just a yojana in the sky, it was forcibly restrained when I grasped its talon with my hand.
मयि याते क्षणेनैव गगनाध्वन्यदृश्यताम् ।
निवृत्तोऽसौ विहंगेन्द्रो दुस्त्यजा संगतिः सताम् ॥ १५ ॥
mayi yāte kṣaṇenaiva gaganādhvanyadṛśyatām ,
nivṛtto'sau vihaṃgendro dustyajā saṃgatiḥ satām 15
15. mayi yāte kṣaṇena eva gaganādhvani adṛśyatām
nivṛttaḥ asau vihaṃgendraḥ dustyajā saṃgatiḥ satām
15. mayi kṣaṇena eva gaganādhvani adṛśyatām yāte asau
vihaṃgendraḥ nivṛttaḥ satām saṃgatiḥ dustyajā
15. As soon as I had departed into the sky's path and instantly became invisible, that king of birds returned. Indeed, the association of the virtuous is difficult to abandon.
अन्योन्यमपि कस्मिंश्चित्तरङ्गक इवाम्बुधौ ।
व्योमन्यदृश्यतां यातो खगस्मृत्या मुनीनहम् ॥ १६ ॥
anyonyamapi kasmiṃścittaraṅgaka ivāmbudhau ,
vyomanyadṛśyatāṃ yāto khagasmṛtyā munīnaham 16
16. anyonyam api kasmiṃcit taraṅgaka iva ambudhau
vyomni adṛśyatām yātaḥ khagasmṛtyā munīn aham
16. aham khagasmṛtyā vyomni adṛśyatām munīn yātaḥ
kasmiṃcit ambudhau anyonyam api taraṅgaka iva
16. Remembering the bird, I became invisible in the sky as I proceeded towards the sages, just as one wave merges indistinguishably with others in the ocean.
सप्तर्षिमण्डलं प्राप्य जायया परिपूजितः ।
याते कृतयुगस्यादौ पुरा वर्षशतद्वये ॥ १७ ॥
saptarṣimaṇḍalaṃ prāpya jāyayā paripūjitaḥ ,
yāte kṛtayugasyādau purā varṣaśatadvaye 17
17. saptarṣimaṇḍalam prāpya jāyayā paripūjitaḥ
yāte kṛtayugasya ādau purā varṣaśatadvaye
17. purā kṛtayugasya ādau varṣaśatadvaye yāte
saptarṣimaṇḍalam prāpya jāyayā paripūjitaḥ
17. Formerly, at the beginning of the Kṛtayuga, two hundred years having passed, I reached the constellation of the seven sages (saptarṣimaṇḍala) and was honored by my wife.
संगतोऽहं भुशुण्डेन मेरोः शृङ्गद्रुमेऽभवम् ।
अद्य राम कृते क्षीणे त्रेता संप्रति वर्तते ॥ १८ ॥
saṃgato'haṃ bhuśuṇḍena meroḥ śṛṅgadrume'bhavam ,
adya rāma kṛte kṣīṇe tretā saṃprati vartate 18
18. saṅgataḥ aham bhuśuṇḍena meroḥ śṛṅgadruma abhavam
adya rāma kṛte kṣīṇe tretā saṃprati vartate
18. rāma adya aham bhuśuṇḍena meroḥ śṛṅgadruma
abhavam kṛte kṣīṇe tretā saṃprati vartate
18. O Rāma, I once met Bhuśuṇḍa on a tree situated on a peak of Mount Meru. Today, with the Kṛta Yuga having waned, the Tretā Yuga is now underway.
मध्ये त्रेतायुगस्यास्य जातस्त्वं रिपुमर्दन ।
पुनरद्याष्टमे वर्षे तत्रैवोपरि भूभृतः ।
मिलितोऽभूद्भुशुण्डो मे तथेवाजररूपवान् ॥ १९ ॥
madhye tretāyugasyāsya jātastvaṃ ripumardana ,
punaradyāṣṭame varṣe tatraivopari bhūbhṛtaḥ ,
milito'bhūdbhuśuṇḍo me tathevājararūpavān 19
19. madhye tretāyugasya asya jātaḥ tvam
ripumardana punar adya aṣṭame varṣe
tatra eva upari bhūbhṛtaḥ militaḥ
abhūt bhuśuṇḍaḥ me tathā eva ajararūpavān
19. ripumardana tvam asya tretāyugasya
madhye jātaḥ adya punar aṣṭame varṣe
tatra eva bhūbhṛtaḥ upari tathā eva
ajararūpavān bhuśuṇḍaḥ me militaḥ abhūt
19. O destroyer of enemies, you were born in the middle of this Tretā Yuga. Again today, in the eighth year, Bhuśuṇḍa met me there on top of that very mountain, just as he was, endowed with an ageless form.
इति संकथितं चित्रं भुशुण्डोदन्तमुत्तमम् ।
श्रुत्वा विचार्य चैवान्तर्यद्युक्तं तत्समाचर ॥ २० ॥
iti saṃkathitaṃ citraṃ bhuśuṇḍodantamuttamam ,
śrutvā vicārya caivāntaryadyuktaṃ tatsamācara 20
20. iti saṅkathitam citram bhuśuṇḍodantam uttamam
śrutvā vicārya ca eva antar yat yuktam tat samācara
20. iti saṅkathitam citram uttamam bhuśuṇḍodantam
śrutvā vicārya ca eva antar yat yuktam tat samācara
20. Having thus heard this wonderful and excellent account of Bhuśuṇḍa, and having deliberated upon it internally, indeed act according to what is appropriate.
श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच ।
इति सुमतिभुशुण्डसत्कथां यो विमलमतिः प्रविचारयिष्यतीह ।
भवभयबहुलाकुलास्थितां स प्रसभमसत्सरितं तरिष्यतीति ॥ २१ ॥
śrīvālmīkiruvāca ,
iti sumatibhuśuṇḍasatkathāṃ yo vimalamatiḥ pravicārayiṣyatīha ,
bhavabhayabahulākulāsthitāṃ sa prasabhamasatsaritaṃ tariṣyatīti 21
21. śrīvālmīkiḥ uvāca iti sumatibhuśuṇḍasatkathām
yaḥ vimalamatiḥ pravicārayiṣyati
iha bhavabhayabahulākulāsthitām
saḥ prasabham asatsaritam tariṣyati iti
21. śrīvālmīkiḥ uvāca iti yaḥ vimalamatiḥ
iha sumatibhuśuṇḍasatkathām pravicārayiṣyati
saḥ bhavabhayabahulākulāsthitām
asatsaritam prasabham tariṣyati iti
21. Śrī Vālmīki said: 'Whoever with a pure intellect thoroughly contemplates this virtuous narrative of Bhuśuṇḍa will effortlessly traverse the river of unreality (saṃsāra), which is characterized by abundant fear of existence (saṃsāra) and agitation, and in which one is situated.'
