ततः समुदिते सूर्ये वितमस्यम्बरे स्थिते ।
समुद्गकादिव जगन्मणौ तस्मिन्विनिर्गते ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, when the sun had risen, and the sky remained free of darkness, as if that world-jewel (referring to the sun) had emerged from a precious jewel casket.
विकसत्यरुणोपान्ते चक्षुषीवाम्बुजाकरे ।
आचारेष्विव लोकेषु प्रसृतेष्वर्करश्मिषु ॥ २ ॥
vikasatyaruṇopānte cakṣuṣīvāmbujākare ,
ācāreṣviva lokeṣu prasṛteṣvarkaraśmiṣu 2
2. vikasati aruṇopānte cakṣuṣī iva ambujākare
ācāreṣu iva lokeṣu prasṛteṣu arkarasmiṣu
2. aruṇopānte (sati),
ambujākare (sati),
vikāsati (sati),
cakṣuṣī iva (dṛśyamāne); arkarasmiṣu lokeṣu prasṛteṣu (satsu),
ācāreṣu iva (dṛśyamāneṣu).
2. As the red glow spread at dawn, like two eyes opening in a lotus pond, and as the sun's rays diffused among the worlds, like established customs (dharma) spreading among people.
दंपती तौ समुत्थाय कृतसंध्याक्रमौ स्थितौ ।
पत्रासने मृदुस्निग्धे कान्तौ काञ्चनकन्दरे ॥ ३ ॥
daṃpatī tau samutthāya kṛtasaṃdhyākramau sthitau ,
patrāsane mṛdusnigdhe kāntau kāñcanakandare 3
3. dampatī tau samutthāya kṛtasaṃdhyākramau sthitau
pattrāsane mṛdusnigdhe kāntau kāñcanakandare
3. tau kāntau dampatī samutthāya kṛtasaṃdhyākramau (bhūtvā),
kāñcanakandare mṛdusnigdhe pattrāsane sthitau.
3. That beautiful couple, having arisen and performed their twilight rituals, then sat on a soft, smooth leaf-seat within a golden cave.
अथोत्थायात्र चूडाला रत्नकुम्भं पुरःस्थितम् ।
कान्ता संकल्पयामास पूर्णं सप्ताब्धिवारिभिः ॥ ४ ॥
athotthāyātra cūḍālā ratnakumbhaṃ puraḥsthitam ,
kāntā saṃkalpayāmāsa pūrṇaṃ saptābdhivāribhiḥ 4
4. atha utthāya atra Cūḍālā ratna-kumbham puraḥ-sthitam
kāntā saṃkalpayāmāsa pūrṇam sapta-abdhi-vāribhiḥ
4. Cūḍālā kāntā atha utthāya atra puraḥ-sthitam pūrṇam
sapta-abdhi-vāribhiḥ ratna-kumbham saṃkalpayāmāsa
4. Then, having risen, Chudalā, the beloved, imagined a jeweled pot, standing before her, filled with the waters of the seven oceans.
तेन मङ्गलकुम्भेन तं पूर्वाभिमुखं स्थितम् ।
भार्या भर्तारमेकान्ते स्वराज्येऽभिषिषेच सा ॥ ५ ॥
tena maṅgalakumbhena taṃ pūrvābhimukhaṃ sthitam ,
bhāryā bhartāramekānte svarājye'bhiṣiṣeca sā 5
5. tena maṅgala-kumbhena tam pūrvābhimukham sthitam
bhāryā bhartāram ekānte sva-rājye abhiṣiṣeca sā
5. sā bhāryā tena maṅgala-kumbhena ekānte pūrvābhimukham
sthitam tam bhartāram sva-rājye abhiṣiṣeca
5. With that auspicious pot, his wife privately consecrated him, who was seated facing east, in his own kingdom.
संकल्पोपगते हैमे स्वभिषिक्तं स्वविष्टरे ।
स्थितं प्रोवाच तन्वी सा चूडाला देवरूपिणी ॥ ६ ॥
saṃkalpopagate haime svabhiṣiktaṃ svaviṣṭare ,
sthitaṃ provāca tanvī sā cūḍālā devarūpiṇī 6
6. saṃkalpa-upagate haime sva-abhiṣiktam sva-viṣṭare
sthitam pra-uvāca tanvī sā Cūḍālā devarūpiṇī
6. sā tanvī Cūḍālā devarūpiṇī saṃkalpa-upagate haime
sva-viṣṭare sthitam sva-abhiṣiktam (tam) pra-uvāca
6. Then, Chudalā, slender-bodied and of divine form, spoke to him who, consecrated, was seated on his own golden throne, brought into being by her spiritual resolve (saṃkalpa).
केवल मौनमुत्सृज्य तेजः शान्तमिदं प्रभो ।
अष्टानां लोकपालानां तेजस्त्वं भर्तुमर्हसि ॥ ७ ॥
kevala maunamutsṛjya tejaḥ śāntamidaṃ prabho ,
aṣṭānāṃ lokapālānāṃ tejastvaṃ bhartumarhasi 7
7. kevalam maunam utsṛjya tejaḥ śāntam idam prabho
aṣṭānām lokapālānām tejaḥ tvam bhartum arhasi
7. prabho tvam kevalam maunam idam śāntam tejaḥ
utsṛjya aṣṭānām lokapālānām tejaḥ bhartum arhasi
7. O Lord, abandoning this mere silence and tranquil radiance, you ought to sustain the splendor of the eight guardians of the world.
चूडालयेति संप्रोक्तो वने राजा शिखिध्वजः ।
वदन्नेवं करोमीति महाराजत्वमाययौ ॥ ८ ॥
cūḍālayeti saṃprokto vane rājā śikhidhvajaḥ ,
vadannevaṃ karomīti mahārājatvamāyayau 8
8. cūḍālayā iti saṃproktaḥ vane rājā śikhidhvajaḥ
vadan evam karomi iti mahārājatvam āyayau
8. vane cūḍālayā iti saṃproktaḥ rājā śikhidhvajaḥ
evam karomi iti vadan mahārājatvam āyayau
8. When King Śikhidhvaja was thus addressed by Cūḍālā in the forest, he attained the state of a great king by declaring, 'I will do this.'
अथ प्रतीहारपदे तिष्ठन्तीमाह मानिनीम् ।
अद्य देवीपदे राज्ञीं त्वां करोम्यभिषेकिनीम् ॥ ९ ॥
atha pratīhārapade tiṣṭhantīmāha māninīm ,
adya devīpade rājñīṃ tvāṃ karomyabhiṣekinīm 9
9. atha pratīhārapade tiṣṭhantīm āha māninīm
adya devīpade rājñīm tvām karomi abhiṣekiṇīm

adya tvām rājñīm devīpade abhiṣekiṇīm karomi
9. Then he said to the proud woman, who was standing in the role of a doorkeeper: 'Today I shall make you, my queen, consecrated to the position of queen.'
इत्युक्त्वा सरसि स्नाप्य महादेवीपदे तथा ।
अभिषिक्तां नृपः कृत्वा स तामाह निजां प्रियाम् ॥ १० ॥
ityuktvā sarasi snāpya mahādevīpade tathā ,
abhiṣiktāṃ nṛpaḥ kṛtvā sa tāmāha nijāṃ priyām 10
10. iti uktvā sarasi snāpya mahādevīpade tathā
abhiṣiktām nṛpaḥ kṛtvā sa tām āha nijām priyām
10. iti uktvā sarasi snāpya tathā mahādevīpade
abhiṣiktām kṛtvā sa nṛpaḥ nijām priyām tām āha
10. Having said thus, and having bathed her in the lake, and having consecrated her to the position of a great queen, the king then said to his beloved.
प्रिये कमलपत्राक्षि क्षणात्संकल्पसंभवम् ।
महाविभवमुद्दामं सैन्यमाहर्तुमर्हसि ॥ ११ ॥
priye kamalapatrākṣi kṣaṇātsaṃkalpasaṃbhavam ,
mahāvibhavamuddāmaṃ sainyamāhartumarhasi 11
11. priye kamalapatrākṣi kṣaṇāt saṅkalpasambhavam
mahāvibhavam uddāmam sainyam āhartum arhasi
11. priye kamalapatrākṣi kṣaṇāt saṅkalpasambhavam
mahāvibhavam uddāmam sainyam āhartum arhasi
11. O beloved, O lotus-leaf-eyed one, you are able to instantly summon an army, born from (your) resolve, mighty and of great splendor.
इति कान्तवचः श्रुत्वा चूडाला वरवर्णिनी ।
सैन्यं संकल्पयामास प्रावृड्घनमिवोद्भटम् ॥ १२ ॥
iti kāntavacaḥ śrutvā cūḍālā varavarṇinī ,
sainyaṃ saṃkalpayāmāsa prāvṛḍghanamivodbhaṭam 12
12. iti kāntavacaḥ śrutvā cūḍālā varavarṇinī
sainyam saṅkalpayāmāsa prāvṛḍghanam iva udbhaṭam

12. Having heard these words of her beloved husband, the beautiful Chūḍālā mentally created a mighty army, like a monsoon cloud.
सैन्यं ददृशतुस्तत्तौ वाजिवारणसंकुलम् ।
पताकापूरिताकाशं नीरन्ध्रीकृतकाननम् ॥ १३ ॥
sainyaṃ dadṛśatustattau vājivāraṇasaṃkulam ,
patākāpūritākāśaṃ nīrandhrīkṛtakānanam 13
13. sainyam dadṛśatuḥ tat tau vājivāraṇasaṅkulam
patākāpūritākāśam nīrandhrīkṛtakānanam
13. tau tat sainyam vājivāraṇasaṅkulam
patākāpūritākāśam nīrandhrīkṛtakānanam dadṛśatuḥ
13. The two of them (Chūḍālā and her husband) saw that army, crowded with horses and elephants, its banners filling the sky, and making the forests impassable.
तूर्यारवध्वनच्छैलगुहागहनकोटरम् ।
मौलिरत्नमहोद्द्योतविचूर्णिततमःपटम् ॥ १४ ॥
tūryāravadhvanacchailaguhāgahanakoṭaram ,
mauliratnamahoddyotavicūrṇitatamaḥpaṭam 14

14. (The army was one) whose deep mountain caves and hollows resounded with the blare of trumpets, and whose great radiance from the crest-jewels dispersed the curtain of darkness.
तत्र गन्धद्विपवरे कृतपार्थिवमण्डले ।
रक्षिते हृष्टसामन्तैरारूढौ नृपदंपती ॥ १५ ॥
tatra gandhadvipavare kṛtapārthivamaṇḍale ,
rakṣite hṛṣṭasāmantairārūḍhau nṛpadaṃpatī 15
15. tatra gandhadvipavare kṛtapārthivamaṇḍale
rakṣite hṛṣṭasāmantaiḥ ārūḍhau nṛpadampatī
15. tatra nṛpadampatī kṛtapārthivamaṇḍale
hṛṣṭasāmantaiḥ rakṣite gandhadvipavare ārūḍhau
15. There, on a magnificent fragrant elephant, around which a royal entourage had gathered and which was protected by joyful feudatories, the royal couple mounted.
ततः शिखिध्वजो राजा महिष्या सममिष्टया ।
पदातिरथसंबाधं कर्षन्नतिवृलो बलम् ॥ १६ ॥
tataḥ śikhidhvajo rājā mahiṣyā samamiṣṭayā ,
padātirathasaṃbādhaṃ karṣannativṛlo balam 16
16. tataḥ śikhidhvajaḥ rājā mahiṣyā samam iṣṭayā
padātirathasaṃbādham karṣan ativṛddhaḥ balam
16. tataḥ rājā śikhidhvajaḥ iṣṭayā mahiṣyā samam
padātirathasaṃbādham ativṛddhaḥ balam karṣan
16. Then King Śikhidhvaja, accompanied by his beloved queen, led his exceedingly vast army, which was densely packed with infantry and chariots.
चचालाचलचालिन्या सेनया स ततो वनात् ।
भिन्दन्निव रसाशैलं वात्ययेवाशु भौमया ॥ १७ ॥
cacālācalacālinyā senayā sa tato vanāt ,
bhindanniva rasāśailaṃ vātyayevāśu bhaumayā 17
17. cacāla acalacālinyā senayā saḥ tataḥ vanāt
bhindan iva rasāśailam vātyayā iva āśu bhaumayā
17. saḥ tataḥ vanāt acalacālinyā senayā cacāla.
saḥ rasāśailam āśu bhaumayā vātyayā iva bhindan iva.
17. He then moved from the forest with his army, which was capable of shaking mountains, as if he were cleaving the earth's mountain like a swift earthly whirlwind.
तस्मान्महेन्द्रशैलेन्द्राच्चलितः स महीपतिः ।
पथि पश्यन्गिरीन्देशान्नदीर्ग्रामान्सजङ्गलान् ॥ १८ ॥
tasmānmahendraśailendrāccalitaḥ sa mahīpatiḥ ,
pathi paśyangirīndeśānnadīrgrāmānsajaṅgalān 18
18. tasmāt mahendraśailendrāt calitaḥ saḥ mahīpatiḥ
pathi paśyan girīn deśān nadīḥ grāmān sajaṅgalān
18. saḥ mahīpatiḥ tasmāt mahendraśailendrāt calitaḥ (san)
pathi girīn deśān nadīḥ grāmān sajaṅgalān paśyan
18. That king, having departed from that chief mountain (Mahendra), saw along his path mountains, regions, rivers, villages, and forests.
दर्शयन्स्वप्रियायास्तमात्मवृत्तान्तसंचयम् ।
प्रागल्पेनैव कालेन स्वां पुरीं स्वर्गशोभनाम् ॥ १९ ॥
darśayansvapriyāyāstamātmavṛttāntasaṃcayam ,
prāgalpenaiva kālena svāṃ purīṃ svargaśobhanām 19
19. darśayan svapriyāyāḥ tam ātmavṛttāntasaṃcayam
prāk alpena eva kālena svām purīm svargaśobhanām
19. (saḥ) svapriyāyāḥ tam ātmavṛttāntasaṃcayam darśayan,
prāk alpena eva kālena svām svargaśobhanām purīm (prāpa)
19. Showing his beloved the entire narrative of his past experiences, he reached his own city, as splendid as heaven, in a surprisingly short period.
तत्र ते तस्य सामन्तास्तदागमनमादृताः ।
विविदुर्जयशब्देन निर्जग्मुश्चोदिताशयाः ॥ २० ॥
tatra te tasya sāmantāstadāgamanamādṛtāḥ ,
vividurjayaśabdena nirjagmuścoditāśayāḥ 20
20. tatra te tasya sāmantāḥ tadāgamanam ādṛtāḥ
vividuḥ jayaśabdena ca uditāśayāḥ nirjarmuḥ
20. tatra te tasya sāmantāḥ tadāgamanam ādṛtāḥ
jayaśabdena vividuḥ ca uditāśayāḥ nirjarmuḥ
20. There, his feudatories, eager for his arrival, recognized it by the sound of victory and, with excited minds, they went out.
एकतां संप्रयातेन तारतूर्यनिनादिना ।
बलद्वयेन तेनासौ विवेश नगरं नृपः ॥ २१ ॥
ekatāṃ saṃprayātena tāratūryaninādinā ,
baladvayena tenāsau viveśa nagaraṃ nṛpaḥ 21
21. ekatām saṃprayātena tāratūryanādinā
baladvayena tena asau viveśa nagaram nṛpaḥ

21. That king entered the city with his two armies, which had merged into one and were resounding with the sound of high-pitched trumpets.
लाजपुष्पाञ्जलिव्रातैरावृष्टः पौरयोषिताम् ।
वणिङ्मार्गमसौ पश्यन्परंपरमनुत्तमम् ॥ २२ ॥
lājapuṣpāñjalivrātairāvṛṣṭaḥ paurayoṣitām ,
vaṇiṅmārgamasau paśyanparaṃparamanuttamam 22
22. lājapuṣpāñjalivrātaiḥ āvṛṣṭaḥ paurayoṣitām
vaṇiṅmārgam asau paśyan paramparam anuttamam
22. asau paurayoṣitām lājapuṣpāñjalivrātaiḥ
āvṛṣṭaḥ anuttamam paramparam vaṇiṅmārgam paśyan
22. He, showered by handfuls of parched grain and flowers from the city women, observed the unparalleled and grand market street...
पताकाध्वजसंबाधं मुक्ताजालमनोरमम् ।
नृत्यगेयपरस्त्रीकं स्वभूमावचलं स्थितम् ॥ २३ ॥
patākādhvajasaṃbādhaṃ muktājālamanoramam ,
nṛtyageyaparastrīkaṃ svabhūmāvacalaṃ sthitam 23
23. patākādhvajasaṃbādham muktājālamanoramam
nṛtyageyaparastrīkam svabhūmau acalam sthitam
23. [saḥ vaṇiṅmārgam] patākādhvajasaṃbādham muktājālamanoramam
nṛtyageyaparastrīkam svabhūmau acalam sthitam [paśyan]
23. ... (He observed the market street) which was crowded with banners and flags, charming with networks of pearls, filled with other women engaged in dance and song, and stood steadfastly on its own ground.
प्रविश्याथ गृहं तैस्तैः संयुतं नृपमङ्गलैः ।
सम्यक्संमानयामास प्रणतं प्रकृतिव्रजम् ॥ २४ ॥
praviśyātha gṛhaṃ taistaiḥ saṃyutaṃ nṛpamaṅgalaiḥ ,
samyaksaṃmānayāmāsa praṇataṃ prakṛtivrajam 24
24. praviśya atha gṛham taiḥ taiḥ saṃyutam nṛpamaṅgalaiḥ
samyak saṃmānayāmāsa praṇatam prakṛtivrajam
24. atha taiḥ taiḥ nṛpamaṅgalaiḥ saṃyutam gṛham praviśya,
samyak praṇatam prakṛtivrajam saṃmānayāmāsa
24. Then, having entered the palace, which was endowed with various royal auspicious rites, he properly honored the bowing multitude of subjects.
पुरोत्सवं भृशं कृत्वा दिनसप्तकमुत्तमम् ।
अकरोद्राजकार्याणि स्वानि स्वान्तःपुरे नृपः ॥ २५ ॥
purotsavaṃ bhṛśaṃ kṛtvā dinasaptakamuttamam ,
akarodrājakāryāṇi svāni svāntaḥpure nṛpaḥ 25
25. purutsavam bhṛśam kṛtvā dinasaptakam uttamam
akarot rājakāryāṇi svāni svāntaḥpure nṛpaḥ
25. nṛpaḥ uttamam purutsavam bhṛśam dinasaptakam kṛtvā,
svāntaḥpure svāni rājakāryāṇi akarot
25. After extensively celebrating an excellent city festival for seven days, the king performed his own royal duties from within his inner palace.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि राज्यं कृत्वा महीतले ।
सहचूडालया राम विरतो देहधारणात् ॥ २६ ॥
daśavarṣasahasrāṇi rājyaṃ kṛtvā mahītale ,
sahacūḍālayā rāma virato dehadhāraṇāt 26
26. daśavarṣasahasrāṇi rājyam kṛtvā mahītale
sahacūḍālayā rāma virataḥ dehadhāraṇāt
26. rāma,
mahītale daśavarṣasahasrāṇi rājyam sahacūḍālayā kṛtvā,
dehadhāraṇāt virataḥ
26. O Rāma, having ruled the kingdom on earth for ten thousand years with Cūḍālā, he desisted from maintaining a physical body.
देहमुत्सृज्य निर्वाणमस्नेह इव दीपकः ।
अपुनर्जन्मने राम जगामेति महामतिः ॥ २७ ॥
dehamutsṛjya nirvāṇamasneha iva dīpakaḥ ,
apunarjanmane rāma jagāmeti mahāmatiḥ 27
27. deham utsṛjya nirvāṇam asnehaḥ iva dīpakaḥ
apunarjanmane rāma jagāma iti mahāmatiḥ
27. rāma,
mahāmatiḥ deham utsṛjya,
asnehaḥ dīpakaḥ iva,
apunarjanmane nirvāṇam iti jagāma
27. O Rāma, having abandoned the body, that great-minded individual attained final liberation (nirvāṇa) for non-rebirth, just as a lamp becomes extinguished without oil.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि समदृष्टितया तया ।
राज्यं तयाऽऽरमय्यापि निर्वाणं पदमाप्तवान् ॥ २८ ॥
daśavarṣasahasrāṇi samadṛṣṭitayā tayā ,
rājyaṃ tayā''ramayyāpi nirvāṇaṃ padamāptavān 28
28. daśavarṣasahasrāṇi samadṛṣṭitayā tayā rājyam
tayā āramayyā api nirvāṇam padam āptavān
28. tayā samadṛṣṭitayā daśavarṣasahasrāṇi rājyam
tayā āramayyā api nirvāṇam padam āptavān
28. For ten thousand years, through her influence and with an attitude of equanimity (samadṛṣṭi), even while ruling the kingdom, he attained the state of final liberation (nirvāṇa).
विगतभयविषादो मानमात्सर्यमुक्तः प्रकृतसहजकर्मा भुक्तनीरागबुद्धिः ।
इति समसमदृष्टिर्मृत्युमार्योऽथ जित्वा दशशिशिरसहस्राण्येकराज्यं चकार ॥ २९ ॥
vigatabhayaviṣādo mānamātsaryamuktaḥ prakṛtasahajakarmā bhuktanīrāgabuddhiḥ ,
iti samasamadṛṣṭirmṛtyumāryo'tha jitvā daśaśiśirasahasrāṇyekarājyaṃ cakāra 29
29. vigatabhayaviṣādaḥ mānamātsaryamuktaḥ
prakṛtasahajakarmā bhuktaniirāgabuddhiḥ
iti samasamadṛṣṭiḥ mṛtyum āryaḥ atha
jitvā daśaśiśirasahasrāṇi ekarājyam cakāra
29. vigatabhayaviṣādaḥ mānamātsaryamuktaḥ
prakṛtasahajakarmā bhuktaniirāgabuddhiḥ
iti samasamadṛṣṭiḥ āryaḥ mṛtyum jitvā
atha daśaśiśirasahasrāṇi ekarājyam cakāra
29. Thus perfectly equanimous (samadṛṣṭi), this noble one, freed from fear and despondency, released from pride and envy, performing actions aligned with his intrinsic nature (dharma), and whose intellect (buddhi) remained detached even after experiencing (life's joys and sorrows), conquered death and subsequently ruled a unified kingdom for ten thousand years.
भुक्त्वा भोगाननेकान्भुवि सकलमहीपालचूडामणित्वे स्थित्वा वै दीर्घकालं परममृतपदं प्राप्तवान्सत्त्वशेषः ।
एवं रामागतं त्वं प्रकृतमनुसरन्कार्यजातं विशोकस्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ स्वयं वा प्रसभमनुभवन्भोगमोक्षादिलक्ष्मीः ॥ ३० ॥
bhuktvā bhogānanekānbhuvi sakalamahīpālacūḍāmaṇitve sthitvā vai dīrghakālaṃ paramamṛtapadaṃ prāptavānsattvaśeṣaḥ ,
evaṃ rāmāgataṃ tvaṃ prakṛtamanusarankāryajātaṃ viśokastiṣṭhottiṣṭha svayaṃ vā prasabhamanubhavanbhogamokṣādilakṣmīḥ 30
30. bhuktvā bhogān anekān bhuvi sakalamahiipālachūḍāmaṇitve sthitvā
vai diirghakālam paramamṛtapadam prāptavān sattvaśeṣaḥ evam
rāma āgatam tvam prakṛtam anusaran kāryajātam viśokaḥ tiṣṭha
uttiṣṭha svayam vā prasabham anubhavan bhogamokṣādilakṣmiiḥ
30. bhuvi anekān bhogān bhuktvā sakalamahiipālachūḍāmaṇitve diirghakālam vai sthitvā,
sattvaśeṣaḥ paramamṛtapadam prāptavān.
evam he rāma,
tvam viśokaḥ prakṛtam āgatam kāryajātam anusaran svayam vā tiṣṭha uttiṣṭha,
bhogamokṣādilakṣmiiḥ prasabham anubhavan (bhava).
30. Having enjoyed countless pleasures on earth and having reigned for a long time as the foremost among all kings, he (Śikhidhvaja), with only his pure being (sattva) remaining, attained the supreme, immortal state. In the same way, O Rāma, you too, free from sorrow, should either remain (in peace) or rise up and, following your natural course of duties (dharma), vigorously experience the prosperity that comes from both worldly enjoyments and ultimate liberation (mokṣa).
