अथ वीर इवारक्तः कालेनास्तमितो रविः ।
अस्त्रतेजःपरिम्लानप्रतापोऽब्धौ समुज्झितः ॥ १ ॥

1. śrī-vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca atha kālena vīraḥ iva āraktaḥ raviḥ astra-tejaḥ-parimlāna-pratāpaḥ abdhau astamitaḥ samujjitaḥ.
1. Revered Vasiṣṭha said: Then the sun (raviḥ), reddened like a brave warrior, set with the passage of time. Its splendor, as if dimmed by the fiery power of weapons, was then cast into the ocean.
रणरक्तरुचिर्व्योमदर्पणप्रतिबिम्बिता ।
जहौ सूर्यशिरश्छेदे संध्यालेखोदभूत्क्षणम् ॥ २ ॥

jahau sūryaśiraśchede saṃdhyālekhodabhūtkṣaṇam 2
2. raṇa-rakta-ruciḥ vyoma-darpaṇa-pratibimbitā jahau
sūrya-śiras-chede sandhyā-lekhaḥ udabhūt kṣaṇam
2. raṇa-rakta-ruciḥ vyoma-darpaṇa-pratibimbitā (sūryasya) sūrya-śiras-chede (sūryam) jahau (tataḥ) kṣaṇam sandhyā-lekhaḥ udabhūt.
2. The radiance (ruciḥ) that was red like battle-blood, reflected in the mirror of the sky, departed at the severing of the sun's head (i.e., its setting). Instantly, a streak of twilight (sandhyā) appeared.
भूपातालनभोदिग्भ्यः प्रलयब्धिजलौघवत् ।
समाजग्मुस्तनत्ताला वेताला वलया इव ॥ ३ ॥

3. From the earth, netherworlds, sky, and directions, the Vetālas (demons) gathered, making rhythmic sounds and moving like circles, similar to the surging floods of water from the ocean of dissolution.
मृष्टध्वान्तासिवलिते दिननागेन्द्रमस्तके ।
संध्यारागारुणं कीर्णं तारानिकरमौक्तिकम् ॥ ४ ॥

4. On the head of the great elephant of the day (the sun), which was enveloped by a sword of pure darkness, the pearl-like multitude of stars was scattered, reddish with the hue of twilight.
निःसत्त्वेषु तमोन्धेषु रसनारसशालिषु ।
संकोचमाययुः पद्मामृतानां हृदयेष्विव ॥ ५ ॥
niḥsattveṣu tamondheṣu rasanārasaśāliṣu ,
saṃkocamāyayuḥ padmāmṛtānāṃ hṛdayeṣviva 5
5. niḥsattveṣu tamaḥ andheṣu rasanārasaśāliṣu
saṅkocam āyayuḥ padmāmṛtānām hṛdayeṣu iva
5. niḥsattveṣu tamaḥ andheṣu rasanārasaśāliṣu
hṛdayeṣu iva padmāmṛtānām saṅkocam āyayuḥ
5. The nectar-like lotuses closed (contracted), just as hearts would, when they are devoid of vitality, blinded by darkness, and preoccupied with the flavors of sensory experience.
मीलत्पक्षाः क्षणात्सुप्ताः कृच्छ्रप्रोच्छ्रितकन्धराः ।
कुलायेषु खगा आसञ्छवाङ्गेष्विव हेतयः ॥ ६ ॥
mīlatpakṣāḥ kṣaṇātsuptāḥ kṛcchraprocchritakandharāḥ ,
kulāyeṣu khagā āsañchavāṅgeṣviva hetayaḥ 6

kulāyeṣu khagāḥ āsan chava aṅgeṣu iva hetayaḥ

khagāḥ kulāyeṣu chava aṅgeṣu iva hetayaḥ āsan
6. The birds, with closed wings, instantly asleep, and with their necks awkwardly raised, were in their nests, like weapons (hetayaḥ) embedded in corpses.
आसन्नचन्द्रसुभगा लोकाः कुसुमपङ्क्तयः ।
उल्लसद्धृदया जाता वीरपक्षेष्विव श्रियः ॥ ७ ॥
āsannacandrasubhagā lokāḥ kusumapaṅktayaḥ ,
ullasaddhṛdayā jātā vīrapakṣeṣviva śriyaḥ 7
7. āsanacandrasubhagāḥ lokāḥ kusumapaṅktayaḥ
ullasadhṛdayāḥ jātāḥ vīrapakṣeṣu iva śriyaḥ
7. lokāḥ kusumapaṅktayaḥ āsanacandrasubhagāḥ ullasadhṛdayāḥ jātāḥ vīrapakṣeṣu śriyaḥ iva.
7. People and rows of flowers, made lovely by the approaching moon, became joyful-hearted, just like fortunes (śriyaḥ) appear among heroes.
रक्तवारिमयी सायमङ्गगुप्तशिलीमुखा ।
संकुचद्वक्त्रपद्माभूद्रणभूमिरिवाब्जिनी ॥ ८ ॥
raktavārimayī sāyamaṅgaguptaśilīmukhā ,
saṃkucadvaktrapadmābhūdraṇabhūmirivābjinī 8

8. sāyam raṇabhūmiḥ raktavārimayī aṅgaguptaśilīmukhā saṃkucadvaktrapadmā abjinī iva abhūt.
8. In the evening, the battlefield became like a lotus pond: it was full of bloody water, with arrows hidden in the bodies, and with shrinking lotus-like faces.
उपर्यभूद्व्योमसरस्ताराकुमुदमण्डितम् ।
अधस्त्वभूद्वारिसरः स्फुरत्कुमुदतारकम् ॥ ९ ॥

adhastvabhūdvārisaraḥ sphuratkumudatārakam 9
9. upari abhūt vyomasaraḥ tārākumudamaṇḍitam

9. Above, the sky became a lake adorned with stars as water-lilies. But below, the water became a lake with glowing water-lilies acting as stars.
तमस्यपेतभीतानि भूतानि मिलितान्यलम् ।
पयांसीव विसेतूनि प्रसृतानि दिशं प्रति ॥ १० ॥
tamasyapetabhītāni bhūtāni militānyalam ,
payāṃsīva visetūni prasṛtāni diśaṃ prati 10
10. tamasi apetabhītāni bhūtāni militāni alam
payāṃsi iva visetūni prasṛtāni diśam prati
10. tamasi apetabhītāni bhūtāni alam militāni.
visetūni payāṃsi iva diśam prati prasṛtāni.
10. In the darkness, the creatures, having become fearless, assembled greatly. They then spread out in every direction, like unimpeded waters.
आसीद्रणाङ्गणं गायद्वेतालकुलसंकुलम् ।
क्वणत्कङ्कालकाङ्कस्थकङ्ककाकोलकेलिमत् ॥ ११ ॥
āsīdraṇāṅgaṇaṃ gāyadvetālakulasaṃkulam ,
kvaṇatkaṅkālakāṅkasthakaṅkakākolakelimat 11

11. The battlefield was crowded with hosts of singing vetālas (ghosts/demons). It was filled with the sport of vultures and crows perched in the hollows of rattling skeletons.
अथ काष्ठचिताज्वालसताराम्बरभास्वरम् ।
पचत्पचपचाशब्दिमेदोमांसमयानलम् ॥ १२ ॥

12. Then, with the flames of wood pyres, it (the battlefield) shone brightly like the star-studded sky. It featured a fire of fat and flesh, which produced a 'pacapacā' sound as it burned.
सर्वाङ्गास्थिस्फुटास्फोटस्फुटच्चितिचयोन्मुखम् ।
वेतालललनारब्धजललीलातिरोहितम् ॥ १३ ॥

13. (The battlefield was also) characterized by heaps of pyres bursting open with the loud cracking of bones from all limbs. It was also obscured by water sports initiated by female vetālas (ghosts/demons).
श्वकाकयक्षवेतालतालकोलाहलोल्बणम् ।
गमागमेन भूतानां समुड्डीनवनोपमम् ॥ १४ ॥

14. (The battlefield was) overwhelming with the loud, rhythmic clamor of dogs, crows, yakṣas, and vetālas (ghosts/demons). Due to the constant coming and going of various beings (bhūtas), it resembled a forest where birds have suddenly flown up in commotion.
रक्तमांसवसामेदोहरणव्यग्रडाकिनि ।
चर्वितासृग्वसामांसस्रवत्सृक्किपिशाचकम् ॥ १५ ॥
raktamāṃsavasāmedoharaṇavyagraḍākini ,
carvitāsṛgvasāmāṃsasravatsṛkkipiśācakam 15

15. The scene is characterized by female ghouls (ḍākinī) intently seizing blood, flesh, fat, and marrow; and by goblins (piśāca) whose mouth corners are dripping with chewed blood, fat, and flesh.
मध्यमध्यचितालोकप्रकटासृक्शवव्रजम् ।
विरूपिकानीयमानस्वांसन्यस्तमहाशवम् ॥ १६ ॥

16. Amidst it, heaps of bloody corpses are revealed here and there; and massive corpses are being carried by deformed female spirits (virūpikā), laid upon their own shoulders.
उत्ताण्डवोग्रकुम्भाण्डमण्डलोड्डामरोदरम् ।
छमिच्छमित्प्रलापान्तं मेदोसृग्वाष्पसाम्बुदम् ॥ १७ ॥

17. ut-tāṇḍava-ugra-kumbhāṇḍa-maṇḍala-uḍḍāmara-udaram

17. Its interior is tumultuous with groups of fierce "kumbhāṇḍa" demons performing furious dances; and it resembles a cloud of fat, blood, and tears, amidst the clamorous cries of 'cham, cham!'
वहद्रक्तनदीरंहोरूढभूचररूपिकम् ।
वेतालकुलकङ्कालकर्षणाकुलकाकलम् ॥ १८ ॥

18. It is characterized by terrestrial forms that have arisen from the impetus of flowing rivers of blood; and it features the confused cries of agitated "vetāla" hordes dragging skeletons.
मृतेभोदरमञ्जूषासुप्तवेतालबालकम् ।
विविक्तैकरणोद्देशपानक्रीडास्थराक्षसम् ॥ १९ ॥

19. This place is characterized by child-vetālas (vampiric spirits) sleeping within the casket-like bellies of dead elephants, and by demons engaged in drinking revelries in desolate battle-sites.
मत्तवेतालकलहचितालातरणोज्ज्वलम् ।
वहद्रक्तवसामिश्रगन्धबन्धुरमारुतम् ॥ २० ॥

20. This place blazes with firebrand-battles fought in the quarrels of frenzied vetālas (vampiric spirits), and the air is heavy with the mingled stench of flowing blood and fat.

अर्धपक्वशवास्वादलुब्धयक्षोल्लसत्कलि ॥ २१ ॥

21. This place is characterized by the moving 'draṭa-raṭa' sounds emitted, as if vomited, from the casket-like "rūpikās" (ghosts), and where discord thrives among "yakṣas" (spirits) greedy for the taste of half-cooked corpses.
तुङ्गवङ्गकलिङ्गाङ्गतङ्गणाङ्गलगत्खगम् ।
तारापातोपमहसत्संमुखज्वालरूपिकम् ॥ २२ ॥
tuṅgavaṅgakaliṅgāṅgataṅgaṇāṅgalagatkhagam ,

22. This place is visited by carrion birds from the lands of Tunga, Vanga, Kalinga, Anga, Taṅgaṇa, and Aṅgala, and where "rūpikās" (ghosts) manifest with flames that gleam brightly like a shower of falling stars.
पतद्वेतालसोल्लासमध्यस्थासृग्विरूपिकम् ।
पिशाचाकर्णिताभ्यर्णयोगिनीगणनायकम् ॥ २३ ॥

23. One who is disfigured by blood, standing amidst falling and joyfully reveling vetālas; and who is the leader of a multitude of yoginīs, whose presence is noted by nearby ghouls (piśācas).
प्रसृतान्त्रमहातन्त्रीप्रायसंपन्नवादनम् ।
पिशाचवासनोत्क्रान्तपिशाचीभूतमानवम् ॥ २४ ॥

24. Where music, produced like the sound of great stringed instruments (tantrīs) fashioned from stretched-out intestines, was performed; and where human beings, overwhelmed by ghoul-like impulses, had themselves become female ghouls (piśācīs).
रूपिकालोकनापूर्वत्रासार्धमृतसद्भटम् ।
क्वचिद्वेतालरक्षोभिरपरीपूर्णमद्रकम् ॥ २५ ॥

kvacidvetālarakṣobhiraparīpūrṇamadrakam 25

25. Where brave warriors (sat-bhaṭas) were half-dead from unprecedented terror at the sight of the female ghouls (rūpikās); and where, in some places, the rocky terrain was not completely, but almost, filled with vetālas and rākṣasas.
स्वरूपिकास्कन्धपतच्छवत्रस्तनिशाचरम् ।
नभःसंघट्टितापूर्वभूतपेटकसंकटम् ॥ २६ ॥

26. Where even night-stalkers (niśācaras) were terrified by corpses falling from the shoulders of female ghouls (rūpikās) in their true form; and where the sky was congested with unprecedented hordes of ghosts (bhūtas) colliding into each other.
अतिप्रयत्नापहृतम्रियमाणनरामिषम् ।
स्वभक्ष्यापेक्षपक्षेषु विक्षिप्तशवराशिवत् ॥ २७ ॥

27. It was like heaps of scattered corpses (śava), fought over by various factions (pakṣa) craving their own prey - flesh (āmiṣa) torn from dying men with immense effort.
शिवामुखानलशिखाखण्डोत्थमितिरक्तगैः ।
समुड्डीननवाशोकपुष्पगुच्छमिवाभितः ॥ २८ ॥

28. With blood-red fragments, rising in multitudes from the fiery flames within the mouths of jackals (śivā), it was as if fresh clusters of Ashoka flowers were flying upwards all around.
कबन्धकन्धराबन्धव्यग्रवेतालबालकम् ।
यक्षरक्षःपिशाचादिकचदाकाशगोल्मुकम् ॥ २९ ॥

29. It was a scene featuring young vetālas (vetāla) diligently fastening necks to headless trunks (kabandha), and Yakṣas, Rakṣas (rakṣas), Piśācas, and other such beings glittering in the sky like firebrands (golmuka).

It filled the base (pīṭha) formed by dark clouds (ambuda), like a vast mass (piṇḍa) adorning the interior spaces (antarāla) of the sky (ākāśa), mountains (bhūdhara), groves, and caves; and it was like the shattered remains (kapeṭa) of hands and arms (karakāṇḍa) from worlds (loka) violently agitated (vyādhūta) by the furious winds (vāta) of cosmic dissolution (kalpa), which themselves were disturbed (ākula) by the intense speed (rabhasa) of agitated spirits (bhūta).
