1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, I, with my gaze fixed (nikṣiptākṣaḥ) on Brahmā - who is the foremost (agrastha) lord of Brahmaloka and deeply engaged in meditation (dhyānaśālini) - gradually looked (dṛṣṭavān) forth (agrataḥ) in all directions (dikṣu).
द्वितीयमर्कं मध्याह्ने पश्चादभ्युदितं स्फुटम् ।
दिग्दाहमिव दिग्वक्रे वनदाहमिवाचले ॥ २ ॥
dvitīyamarkaṃ madhyāhne paścādabhyuditaṃ sphuṭam ,
digdāhamiva digvakre vanadāhamivācale 2
2. dvitīyam arkam madhyāhne paścāt abhyuditam
sphuṭam dikdāham iva dikvakre vanadāham iva acale
2. (aham) dvitīyam arkam madhyāhne

(dṛṣṭavān) (tat) dikvakre dikdāham
iva acale vanadāham iva (āsīt)
2. I beheld a second sun (dvitīyam arkam), clearly risen (abhyuditam) in the west (paścāt) at midday (madhyāhne). It was like a conflagration consuming the cardinal directions (digdāham iva) on the horizon (digvakre), and like a forest fire (vanadāham iva) raging on a mountain (acale).
वह्निलोकमिव व्योम्नि वडवाग्निमिवार्णवे ।
ततोऽपश्यमहं दीप्तं सूर्यं नैर्ऋतदिङ्मुखे ॥ ३ ॥
vahnilokamiva vyomni vaḍavāgnimivārṇave ,
tato'paśyamahaṃ dīptaṃ sūryaṃ nairṛtadiṅmukhe 3
3. vahnilokam iva vyomni vaḍavāgnim iva arṇave
tataḥ apaśyam aham dīptam sūryam nairṛtadiṅmukhe
3. (tat) vyomni vahnilokam iva arṇave vaḍavāgnim iva
(āsīt) tataḥ aham nairṛtadiṅmukhe dīptam sūryam apaśyam
3. (The second sun appeared) like a world of fire (vahnilokam iva) in the sky (vyomni), or like the submarine fire (vaḍavāgnim iva) in the ocean (arṇave). Then (tataḥ), I (aham) saw (apaśyam) a resplendent (dīptam) sun (sūryam) in the southwest (nairṛtadiṅmukhe).
सूर्यं याम्ये ककुब्भागे सूर्यमग्निककुष्मुखे ।
सूर्यमैन्द्रककुब्भागे सूर्यमीशानदिङ्मुखे ॥ ४ ॥
sūryaṃ yāmye kakubbhāge sūryamagnikakuṣmukhe ,
sūryamaindrakakubbhāge sūryamīśānadiṅmukhe 4
4. sūryam yāmye kakubbhāge sūryam agnikakuṣmukhe
sūryam aindrakakubbhāge sūryam īśānadiṅmukhe
4. sūryam yāmye kakubbhāge sūryam agnikakuṣmukhe

4. (He saw) the sun in the southern quarter, the sun in the direction of the Agni (southeast) quarter, the sun in the region of the Indra (east) quarter, and the sun facing the Ishana (northeast) direction.
कुबेरककुभि सूर्यं सूर्यं वायव्यदिक्तटे ।
सूर्यं वरुणदिग्भागे तेन विस्मयवानहम् ॥ ५ ॥
kuberakakubhi sūryaṃ sūryaṃ vāyavyadiktaṭe ,
sūryaṃ varuṇadigbhāge tena vismayavānaham 5
5. kuberakakubhi sūryam sūryam vāyavyadiktate
sūryam varuṇadigbhāge tena vismayavān aham
5. aham vismayavān tena sūryam kuberakakubhi
sūryam vāyavyadiktate sūryam varuṇadigbhāge
5. (He saw) the sun in the Kubera (north) quarter, the sun on the side of the Vayu (northwest) direction, and the sun in the region of the Varuna (west) direction. Because of this, I was filled with astonishment.
यावद्विचारयाम्याशु विधिवैधुर्यमाकुलम् ।
उदभूद्भूतलात्तावदर्क और्व इवार्णवात् ॥ ६ ॥
yāvadvicārayāmyāśu vidhivaidhuryamākulam ,
udabhūdbhūtalāttāvadarka aurva ivārṇavāt 6
6. yāvat vicārayāmi āśu vidhivai dhuryam ākulam
udabhūt bhūtalāt tāvat arkaḥ aurvaḥ iva arṇavāt
6. yāvat āśu ākulam vidhivai dhuryam vicārayāmi
tāvat bhūtalāt arkaḥ udabhūt aurvaḥ arṇavāt iva
6. While I was quickly pondering the confused and unfavorable turn of fate, at that very moment, a sun arose from the surface of the earth, just as the mythical submarine fire (Aurva) appears from the ocean.
एकादशेऽखिलार्काणां प्रतिबिम्बमिवोत्थितम् ।
उदभूत्त्रयमर्काणामन्तरे दिग्गणाम्बरे ॥ ७ ॥

udabhūttrayamarkāṇāmantare diggaṇāmbare 7
7. ekādaśe akhila arkāṇām pratibimbam iva utthitam

ekādaśe akhila arkāṇām pratibimbam iva utthitam
7. As if a reflection of all the eleven suns had manifested, a trio of suns appeared within the vast expanse of the directional quarters.
तद्धि रौद्रं वपुस्तत्र तन्मध्ये लोचनत्रयम् ।
तद्द्वादशपरीमाणं दीप्तं वृन्दं विवस्वताम् ॥ ८ ॥
taddhi raudraṃ vapustatra tanmadhye locanatrayam ,
taddvādaśaparīmāṇaṃ dīptaṃ vṛndaṃ vivasvatām 8
8. tat hi raudram vapuḥ tatra tat madhye locanatrayam
tat dvādaśaparīmāṇam dīptam vṛndam vivasvatām
8. tatra tat hi raudram vapuḥ (āsīt).
tat madhye locanatrayam (āsīt).
tat dvādaśaparīmāṇam dīptam vivasvatām vṛndam (āsīt).
8. Indeed, there was that dreadful form (vapus), and within it were three eyes. It was of the measure of a blazing host of twelve suns.
सर्वदिक्कं ददाहोच्चैः शुष्कं वनमिवानलः ।
अथोदभूज्जगत्खण्डशोषणग्रीष्मवासरः ॥ ९ ॥
sarvadikkaṃ dadāhoccaiḥ śuṣkaṃ vanamivānalaḥ ,
athodabhūjjagatkhaṇḍaśoṣaṇagrīṣmavāsaraḥ 9
9. sarvadikkam dadāha uccaiḥ śuṣkam vanam iva analaḥ
atha udabhūt jagatkhaṇḍaśoṣaṇagrīṣmavāsaraḥ
9. (tat vapuḥ) analaḥ śuṣkam vanam iva uccaiḥ sarvadikkam dadāha.
atha jagatkhaṇḍaśoṣaṇagrīṣmavāsaraḥ udabhūt.
9. (That form) burnt intensely in all directions, like a fire consuming a dry forest. Then, a summer day that would dry up fragments of the entire world arose.
अनग्निरग्निदाहो द्रागदृश्योल्मुकगुल्मकः ।
अनग्निनाग्निदाहेन तेन तामरसेक्षण ॥ १० ॥
anagniragnidāho drāgadṛśyolmukagulmakaḥ ,
anagnināgnidāhena tena tāmarasekṣaṇa 10
10. anagniḥ agnidāhaḥ drāk adṛśyolmukagulmakaḥ
anagninā agnidāhena tena tāmarasekṣaṇa
10. tāmarasekṣaṇa,
(saḥ) anagniḥ agnidāhaḥ drāk adṛśyolmukagulmakaḥ (āsīt).

10. O lotus-eyed one (tāmarasekṣaṇa), that was a fireless conflagration, instantly having invisible embers and consuming even dense thickets. By that very fireless conflagration...
अङ्गानि दावदग्धानि खिन्नानीव ममाभवन् ।
प्रदेशं तमथ त्यक्त्वा दूरमारूढवानहम् ॥ ११ ॥
aṅgāni dāvadagdhāni khinnānīva mamābhavan ,
pradeśaṃ tamatha tyaktvā dūramārūḍhavānaham 11
11. aṅgāni dāvadagdhāni khinnāni iva mama abhavan
pradeśam tam atha tyaktvā dūram ārūḍhavān aham
11. mama aṅgāni dāvadagdhāni khinnāni iva abhavan.
atha aham tam pradeśam tyaktvā dūram ārūḍhavān.
11. My limbs became as if burnt by a forest fire and utterly exhausted. Then, having abandoned that place, I ascended far away.
दृढहस्ततलाघातहतकन्दुकवन्नभः ।
अपश्यं गगनस्थोऽहमुदितं चण्डतेजसम् ॥ १२ ॥
dṛḍhahastatalāghātahatakandukavannabhaḥ ,
apaśyaṃ gaganastho'hamuditaṃ caṇḍatejasam 12
12. dṛḍhahastatalāghātahatakandukavat nabhaḥ
apaśyam gaganasthaḥ aham uditam caṇḍatejasam
12. aham gaganasthaḥ nabhaḥ dṛḍhahastatalāghātahatakandukavat
uditam caṇḍatejasam apaśyam
12. Standing in the sky, I saw the firmament, intensely radiant and risen, resembling a ball struck by the powerful impact of a palm.
तपन्तं द्वादशादित्यगणं दिक्षु दशस्वपि ।
बृहत्तत्र सतारावज्वालेव भगणं चलम् ॥ १३ ॥
tapantaṃ dvādaśādityagaṇaṃ dikṣu daśasvapi ,
bṛhattatra satārāvajvāleva bhagaṇaṃ calam 13
13. tapantam dvādaśādityagaṇam dikṣu daśasu api
bṛhat tatra satārāvat jvālā iva bhagaṇam calam
13. tatra (aham apaśyam) dvādaśādityagaṇam dikṣu daśasu
api tapantam bṛhat satārāvat jvālā iva calam bhagaṇam
13. There, I saw the group of twelve Adityas intensely scorching in all ten directions. I also saw the vast, moving celestial sphere, ablaze like a flame and filled with stars.
महाकुहकुहाशब्दं क्वथत्सप्ताब्धिडम्बरम् ।
सज्वालोल्मुकनीरन्ध्रलोकान्तरपुरान्तरम् ॥ १४ ॥
mahākuhakuhāśabdaṃ kvathatsaptābdhiḍambaram ,
sajvālolmukanīrandhralokāntarapurāntaram 14
14. mahākuhakuhāśabdam kvathat saptābhdḍambaram
sajjvālolmukanīrandhralokāntarapurāntaram

14. It was characterized by the great roaring sound of 'kuhakuhā', by the tumultuous boiling of the seven oceans, and by the innermost parts of worlds and cities densely filled with flaming meteors.
ज्वालाघनपटाटोपसिन्दुरीकृतपर्वतम् ।
दीप्यमानमहागारस्थिरविद्युत्ककुत्पटम् ॥ १५ ॥
jvālāghanapaṭāṭopasindurīkṛtaparvatam ,
dīpyamānamahāgārasthiravidyutkakutpaṭam 15

15. It featured mountains reddened like vermilion by the overwhelming display of dense layers of flames, and the expanse of its cardinal points resembled constant lightning within a vast, blazing abode.
स्फुरत्कटकटाटोपचटत्पत्तनमण्डलम् ।
विदधद्भूतलोद्भूतधूमदण्डैः शिलाघनैः ॥ १६ ॥
sphuratkaṭakaṭāṭopacaṭatpattanamaṇḍalam ,
vidadhadbhūtalodbhūtadhūmadaṇḍaiḥ śilāghanaiḥ 16

16. Creating a scene where the regions of cities flash and crackle with tumultuous sounds, by means of dense rocks and columns of smoke rising from the earth.
काचस्तम्भसहस्राढ्यं भुवनस्थानमण्डपम् ।
क्वथद्भूतमहाभूतताराक्रन्दातिघर्घरम् ॥ १७ ॥
kācastambhasahasrāḍhyaṃ bhuvanasthānamaṇḍapam ,
kvathadbhūtamahābhūtatārākrandātighargharam 17
17. kācastambhasahasrāḍhyam bhuvanasthānamaṇḍapam

17. A pavilion for the cosmic realms, adorned with thousands of glass pillars, excessively rumbling with the seething cries of beings, great elements, and stars.
भूतलोकपुरापातस्फुटच्चटचटोद्भटम् ।
ताराविशरणोद्धातघृष्टरत्नधरातलम् ॥ १८ ॥
bhūtalokapurāpātasphuṭaccaṭacaṭodbhaṭam ,
tārāviśaraṇoddhātaghṛṣṭaratnadharātalam 18

18. Intensified by the bursting, crackling sounds of collapsing cities upon the earthly realm (bhūtaloka), and having its jeweled surface (dharātala) crushed by the impact of scattering stars.
सर्वस्थलालयचलद्दह्यमानजनव्रजम् ।
क्षीणाक्रन्दक्वथद्भूतगणदुर्वासदिक्तटम् ॥ १९ ॥

19. Where multitudes of beings in all dwelling places are trembling and being burned, and where the quarters of space are rendered unlivable by the seething hosts of beings with their exhausted cries.
उत्तप्ताम्बूदराखिन्नजलेचरमहार्णवम् ।
सर्वदिक्कानलप्लोषक्षीणाक्रन्दपुरान्तरम् ॥ २० ॥
uttaptāmbūdarākhinnajalecaramahārṇavam ,
sarvadikkānalaploṣakṣīṇākrandapurāntaram 20

20. A great ocean where aquatic creatures are tormented by intensely heated water depths; and the interior of all cities [is filled with] cries weakened by the scorching of destructive fire (kānala) in every direction.
विदलद्दग्धदिग्दन्तिदन्तोत्तम्भितभूधरम् ।
धराधरदरीरन्ध्रधूममण्डलकुण्डलम् ॥ २१ ॥

21. A world where mountains are propped up by the tusks of directional elephants (digdanti) that are themselves cracking and burnt; and which is characterized by coiling masses of smoke issuing from the crevices of mountain caves.
पतत्पर्वतनिष्पिष्टप्लुष्टपत्तनमण्डलम् ।
पचत्पचपचाशब्दशब्दिताद्रीन्द्रकुञ्जरम् ॥ २२ ॥

22. A world where regions of cities are scorched and crushed by falling mountains; and where great mountains and elephants reverberate with the sizzling, crackling sound ("pacapaca") of burning.
तापतप्तोन्नमद्भूतज्वरितार्णवपर्वतम् ।
हृदयस्फोटनिःसारपतद्विद्याधराङ्गनम् ॥ २३ ॥
tāpataptonnamadbhūtajvaritārṇavaparvatam ,
hṛdayasphoṭaniḥsārapatadvidyādharāṅganam 23
23. tāpataptonnamadbhūtajvaritārṇavaparvatam
hṛdayasphoṭaniḥsārapatadvidyādharāṅganam
23. tāpataptonnamadbhūtajvaritārṇavaparvatam
hṛdayasphoṭaniḥsārapatadvidyādharāṅganam
23. A world where oceans and mountains are made feverish, and creatures rise up tormented by heat; and where Vidyādhara women are falling, their hearts bursting and their essence departing (lifeless).
आक्रन्दरोदनश्रान्तमूर्धनिःसरणामरम् ।
नागलोकज्वलज्ज्वालापातालोत्तप्तभूतलम् ॥ २४ ॥

24. Describing a state where immortal beings (amara), weary from their loud cries and weeping, emerge head-first, and where the surface of the earth is scorched by the blazing flames of the netherworld (nāgaloka) and Pātāla.
शुष्कार्णवसदापक्वविवर्तोग्रजलेचरम् ।
और्वेणाबिन्धनाभावात्प्रोड्डीयेव सहस्रधा ॥ २५ ॥

25. Where aquatic creatures are fiercely consumed and perpetually whirled about in the dried-up oceans, as if the submarine fire (aurva), due to lack of fuel, had erupted into a thousand fragments.
गतेन नृत्यतोत्थाय गृहीतगगनांगनम् ।
अथोदभूज्ज्वलज्ज्वालाकिंशुकांशुकशोभितः ॥ २६ ॥
gatena nṛtyatotthāya gṛhītagaganāṃganam ,
athodabhūjjvalajjvālākiṃśukāṃśukaśobhitaḥ 26
26. gatena nṛtyataḥ utthāya gṛhītagaganāṅganam
atha udabhūt jvalajjvālākiṁśukāṁśukaśobhitaḥ
26. atha gatena nṛtyataḥ utthāya gṛhītagaganāṅganam
jvalajjvālākiṁśukāṁśukaśobhitaḥ udabhūt
26. Then, having risen with a dancing gait and having seized the expanse of the sky, he appeared, resplendent with garments resembling blazing kiṁśuka flowers.
ताण्डवायेव कल्पाग्निस्तरलोल्मुकमाल्यवान् ।
तारं पटपटाटोपी रटद्भट इवोद्भटः ॥ २७ ॥
tāṇḍavāyeva kalpāgnistaralolmukamālyavān ,
tāraṃ paṭapaṭāṭopī raṭadbhaṭa ivodbhaṭaḥ 27
27. tāṇḍavāya iva kalpāgniḥ taralolmukamālyavān
tāram paṭapaṭāṭopī raṭadbhaṭaḥ iva udbhaṭaḥ
27. kalpāgniḥ taralolmukamālyavān tāṇḍavāya iva
udbhaṭaḥ tāram paṭapaṭāṭopī raṭadbhaṭaḥ iva
27. He appeared like the fire of cosmic dissolution (kalpāgni), adorned with a garland of trembling firebrands, as if prepared for a cosmic dance (tāṇḍava). He was a mighty one, making a loud crackling sound like a roaring warrior.
ज्वालोद्भुजो धूमकचो जगज्जीर्णकुटीनटः ।
जज्वलुर्वनजालानि पुराणि नगराणि च ॥ २८ ॥
jvālodbhujo dhūmakaco jagajjīrṇakuṭīnaṭaḥ ,
jajvalurvanajālāni purāṇi nagarāṇi ca 28
28. jvālodhbhujaḥ dhūmakacaḥ jagat-jīrṇakuṭī-naṭaḥ
jajvalur vanajālāni purāṇi nagarāṇi ca
28. jvālodhbhujaḥ dhūmakacaḥ jagat-jīrṇakuṭī-naṭaḥ
vanajālāni purāṇi nagarāṇi ca jajvalur
28. With flames for arms and smoke for hair, it danced, treating the world like a dilapidated hut. The forests, cities, and towns all blazed.
मण्डलद्वीपदुर्गाणि जङ्गलानि स्थलानि च ।
सर्वखानि महाकाशमाशा दश दिवः शिरः ॥ २९ ॥
maṇḍaladvīpadurgāṇi jaṅgalāni sthalāni ca ,
sarvakhāni mahākāśamāśā daśa divaḥ śiraḥ 29
29. maṇḍala-dvīpa-durgāṇi jaṅgalāni sthalāni ca
sarvakhāni mahā-ākāśam āśāḥ daśa divaḥ śiraḥ
29. maṇḍala-dvīpa-durgāṇi jaṅgalāni sthalāni ca
sarvakhāni mahā-ākāśam daśa āśāḥ divaḥ śiraḥ
29. Regions, islands, fortresses, jungles, lands, and all cavities, the vast space (mahākāśa), the ten directions, and the summit of the sky (divaḥ śiraḥ) - all these (also blazed).
श्वभ्ररूपारघट्टाट्टपट्टनोदारदिक्तटः ।

30. With vast boundaries of the directions appearing as chasms, water-wheels, watchtowers, and cities, the peaks, hosts of perfected beings (siddhavṛnda), mountains, and oceans (sāgarārṇava) [all were affected/blazed].
सरः सरस्यः सरितो देवासुरनरोरगाः ।
आशाः शनशनाशब्दैः पुरुषैश्च शिवार्चिषाम् ॥ ३१ ॥

31. Lakes, pools, rivers, gods, demons, humans, and serpents, the directions [were all affected], amidst rustling sounds, and by the beings (puruṣa) of auspicious flames.
आसन्क्ष्वेडाकुराक्षस्यो ज्वालाजालोज्ज्वलोर्ध्वजाः ।
भमद्भमिति भांकारैर्भीषणैर्भूरिभस्मभिः ॥ ३२ ॥

32. There were multitudes of flames, like roaring demonesses full of poison, blazing and rising upwards, accompanied by terrible "bham-bham" sounds and abundant ashes.
ज्वालाः श्वभ्राद्रिभूमीनां गुहाभ्यः परिनिर्ययुः ।
ज्वालोदरस्था अरुणाः समस्ता भूतजातयः ॥ ३३ ॥

33. Flames fully emerged from the caves of pits, mountains, and lands. All kinds of beings, reddish and residing within these flames, were (present).
स्थलपद्मोदरालीनामाजहुः श्रियमश्रियः ।
सद्यो निःसृतरक्ताभैः सिन्दूराम्भोदसुन्दरैः ॥ ३४ ॥

34. The ugly ones (flames/beings) immediately snatched away the beauty of the rows of bees residing within land-lotuses, (appearing) like gushed-forth blood and beautiful as vermilion clouds.
धगद्धगिति गायद्भिर्ज्वालाजालैर्जगद्गतैः ।
आसीद्रक्तांशुकैः कीर्णं संध्याभ्रैरिव वा नभः ॥ ३५ ॥
dhagaddhagiti gāyadbhirjvālājālairjagadgataiḥ ,
āsīdraktāṃśukaiḥ kīrṇaṃ saṃdhyābhrairiva vā nabhaḥ 35

35. The sky was covered by multitudes of flames that roared with a "dhagad-dhag" sound and had spread throughout the world, appearing as if by red garments or twilight clouds.
उत्फुल्लकिंशुकवनैरुड्डीनैरिव वाऽऽवृतम् ।
और्वेण चावृता आसन्फुल्लाशोकवना इव ॥ ३६ ॥

36. The mountain (Vindhya) appeared covered, as if by forests of blooming kimśuka trees or by (their) flying (sparks). And its blooming aśoka forests were covered as if by the submarine fire (aurva).
इव स्थलाब्जवलिता राविरा इव चार्णवाः ।
नानावर्णज्वलज्ज्वालाधूमविन्यासबन्धवान् ॥ ३७ ॥

37. (The Vindhya mountain appeared) as if adorned with terrestrial lotuses, and like roaring oceans, possessing arrangements of multi-colored blazing flames and smoke.
रूढं वह्निमिवाधातुं चित्रसौधलताश्रयम् ।
अनन्त इव विन्यास वनयौवनपावकः ॥ ३८ ॥
rūḍhaṃ vahnimivādhātuṃ citrasaudhalatāśrayam ,

38. (The mountain was) as if to sustain a risen fire, serving as an abode for wondrous palaces and creepers. The vigorous forest fire was like an endless arrangement.
उदयास्तमयादिभ्यो विन्ध्यो विधुरतामगात् ।
अङ्गारकल्पविटपैर्ज्वालावनविवल्गनैः ॥ ३९ ॥

39. From (the spectacle of) its rising and setting (flames and smoke), the Vindhya mountain attained a state of affliction through its branches resembling embers and the leaping of its flame-forests.
शनैरीषदिव क्षुब्धैः सह्योऽसह्यत्वमाययौ ।
मध्यमध्यकचत्कार्ष्ण्यभ्रमद्धूमालिमालितम् ॥ ४० ॥

40. Gradually, as if slightly agitated, that which was tolerable became unbearable. Its very core was pervaded by masses of swirling, roaring, black smoke.
वलज्ज्वालाब्जमलिनं दृष्टं सर इवाम्बरम् ।
खेऽद्रीणां शिखरे व्योम्नि शिखाशिखरशेखराः ॥ ४१ ॥
valajjvālābjamalinaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ sara ivāmbaram ,
khe'drīṇāṃ śikhare vyomni śikhāśikharaśekharāḥ 41

41. The sky appeared like a lake, darkened by swirling, lotus-like flames. In the vast expanse of the sky, on the peaks of the mountains, there were flame-crested summits.
ननृतुर्नीरसा नाशनर्तक्यः केतुकुन्तलाः ।
तलाहितानलज्वाला ब्रह्माण्डोर्ध्वकपाटभूः ॥ ४२ ॥

42. Dry, unappealing dancers of destruction, with flame-like hair, danced. The flames of fire, rising from the surface, became the upper closing leaf of the cosmic door (brahmāṇḍa).
तर्जनप्रोत्पतद्भूतधानौघा भ्रष्टभूमिका ।
क्वणच्छ्रेणी मृज्जलाग्निर्नानावर्णाननारुणा ॥ ४३ ॥
tarjanaprotpatadbhūtadhānaughā bhraṣṭabhūmikā ,
kvaṇacchreṇī mṛjjalāgnirnānāvarṇānanāruṇā 43

43. There was a threatening, upward-flying flood of existing elements; its base was lost; there was a tinkling multitude; the fire (agni) was of earth and water; and it was reddish with faces of various colors.
हृत्प्रकोष्ठे जगल्लक्ष्म्याः सौवर्णीवाभवत्तदा ।
शैलाश्चटचटास्फोटैर्वृक्षाः कटकटारवैः ॥ ४४ ॥
hṛtprakoṣṭhe jagallakṣmyāḥ sauvarṇīvābhavattadā ,
śailāścaṭacaṭāsphoṭairvṛkṣāḥ kaṭakaṭāravaiḥ 44

44. Then, within the core of the world's splendor (Lakṣmī), it seemed to become intensely golden (or molten). The mountains exploded with crackling sounds, and the trees with snapping noises.
देशा हलहलोल्लासैरलं विदलनं ययुः ।
अब्धयः क्वथिताकाराः फेनिलोल्लासमांसलाः ॥ ४५ ॥
deśā halahalollāsairalaṃ vidalanaṃ yayuḥ ,

45. The regions were utterly shattered with tumultuous uproar. The oceans appeared as if boiling, turbulent and massive with surging foam.
वीचीकरतलाघातांश्चक्रुरर्कमुखे मुखे ।
अन्योन्यवेल्लितोल्लोलभूतलाकारपर्वतम् ॥ ४६ ॥

46. With their wave-like hands, they (the oceans) struck blows repeatedly towards the sun's face, making mountain-like formations that resembled mutually surging and agitated surfaces of the earth.
जह्णुर्वीचीकरैर्देहे जडाः प्रकुपिता इव ।
आशाकाशाशिनामेषां गुहागुहगुहारवान् ॥ ४७ ॥
jahṇurvīcīkarairdehe jaḍāḥ prakupitā iva ,
āśākāśāśināmeṣāṃ guhāguhaguhāravān 47

47. As if greatly enraged, the inert (oceans), with their wave-hands, concealed (within their bodies) the profound cave-roars of those (beings) who devour the space of the directions.

48. A fiery sound, originating from the immense edges of flames, resounded. The walls of the cities belonging to the guardians of the directions collapsed like mountains of burning embers.
दिशो दशापि वैवश्यं ययुरुन्मत्तवृत्तयः ।
काञ्चनद्रवसाद्रीन्द्रद्रुमागारगुहागृहः ॥ ४९ ॥
diśo daśāpi vaivaśyaṃ yayurunmattavṛttayaḥ ,

49. Even the ten directions reached a state of bewilderment, their movements becoming frantic. The world, which was an abode comprising molten gold, mountains, great trees, mansions, and caves, (was also affected).
शनैश्चार्वाकृतिर्मेरुरासीद्धिम इवातपे ।
क्षणेनैवानलात्तस्माद्धिमवाञ्जतुवद्द्रुतः ॥ ५० ॥

50. And slowly, Mount Meru, having a declining form, became like snow in the heat. In just a moment, from that fire, the Himalayas melted like lac.
सर्वान्तःशीतलः शुद्धो दुर्जनादिव सज्जनः ।
तस्यामपि दशायां तु मलयोऽमलसौरभः ॥ ५१ ॥
sarvāntaḥśītalaḥ śuddho durjanādiva sajjanaḥ ,
tasyāmapi daśāyāṃ tu malayo'malasaurabhaḥ 51
51. sarva-antaḥ-śītalaḥ śuddhaḥ durjanāt iva sajjanaḥ
tasyām api daśāyām tu malayaḥ amala-saurabhaḥ
51. sarva-antaḥ-śītalaḥ śuddhaḥ sajjanaḥ durjanāt
iva tu tasyām api daśāyām malayaḥ amala-saurabhaḥ
51. One who is pure and perfectly cool within, like a good person (remains unaffected) by a wicked person. But even in that state (of destruction), the Malaya mountain (remained) with its untainted fragrance.
आसीत्त्यजत्युदारात्मा न नाशेऽप्युत्तमं गुणम् ।
नश्यन्नपि महान् ह्लादं न खेदं संप्रयच्छति ॥ ५२ ॥
āsīttyajatyudārātmā na nāśe'pyuttamaṃ guṇam ,
naśyannapi mahān hlādaṃ na khedaṃ saṃprayacchati 52
52. āsīt tyajati udārātmā na nāśe api uttamam guṇam
naśyan api mahān hlādam na khedam saṃprayacchati

mahān naśyan api hlādam na khedam saṃprayacchati
52. Indeed, a noble-hearted individual (udārātmā) does not abandon excellent qualities even amidst ruin. Even when perishing, a great entity imparts joy, not sorrow.
चन्दनं दग्धमप्यासीदानन्दायैव जीवताम् ।
न कदाचन संयाति वस्तूत्तममवस्तुताम् ॥ ५३ ॥
candanaṃ dagdhamapyāsīdānandāyaiva jīvatām ,
na kadācana saṃyāti vastūttamamavastutām 53
53. candanam dagdham api āsīt ānandāya eva jīvatām
na kadācana saṃyāti vastu uttamam avastutām

53. Sandalwood, even when burnt, still serves only to delight living beings. An excellent substance never truly becomes nonexistent or worthless.
प्रलयानलनिर्दग्धमपि हेम न नष्टवत् ।
द्वे हेमनभसी तस्मिन्न नष्टे प्रलयानले ॥ ५४ ॥

54. Gold, even when consumed by the fire of cosmic dissolution, is not truly destroyed. Gold and the sky are the two entities that remain undestroyed even within that raging fire of dissolution.
तयोरेव वपुः श्लाघ्यं सर्वनाशेऽप्यनाशयोः ।
नभो विभुतयाऽनाशि हेमाकृष्टतयाक्षयम् ॥ ५५ ॥
tayoreva vapuḥ ślāghyaṃ sarvanāśe'pyanāśayoḥ ,
nabho vibhutayā'nāśi hemākṛṣṭatayākṣayam 55
55. tayoḥ eva vapuḥ ślāghyam sarvanāśe api anāśayoḥ
nabhaḥ vibhutayā anāśi hema ākṛṣṭatayā akṣayam
55. tayoḥ eva anāśayoḥ vapuḥ sarvanāśe api ślāghyam
nabhaḥ vibhutayā anāśi hema ākṛṣṭatayā akṣayam
55. Of those two, gold and the sky, their very nature is praiseworthy, for they remain undestroyed even during the destruction of all things. The sky is imperishable due to its pervasive nature, and gold is indestructible due to its intrinsic value.
सत्त्वमेकं सुखं मन्ये न रजो न च वा तमः ।
चलदुच्चवनानीव विकीर्णाङ्गारवर्षणः ॥ ५६ ॥
sattvamekaṃ sukhaṃ manye na rajo na ca vā tamaḥ ,
caladuccavanānīva vikīrṇāṅgāravarṣaṇaḥ 56
56. sattvam ekam sukham manye na rajaḥ na ca vā
tamaḥ calat uccavanāni iva vikīrṇāṅgāravarṣaṇaḥ
56. मन्ये सत्त्वम् एकम् सुखम्न रजः,
न च वा तमःचलत्-उच्च-वनानि इव विकीर्ण-अङ्गार-वर्षणः।
56. I consider only sattva to be happiness, not rajas, nor indeed tamas. (The effects of the latter are) like lofty, trembling forests showering scattered embers.
दग्धाब्दाद्रिर्महाधूमज्वालोऽभूद्वह्निवारिदः ।
रसविस्मरणार्तानां शून्यानां स्फारदेहिनाम् ॥ ५७ ॥
dagdhābdādrirmahādhūmajvālo'bhūdvahnivāridaḥ ,
rasavismaraṇārtānāṃ śūnyānāṃ sphāradehinām 57

rasavismaraṇārtānām śūnyānām sphāradehinām
57. वह्निवार्िदः दग्धाब्दाद्रिः महाधूमज्वालः अभूत्रसविस्मaraṇārtānām śūnyānām sphāradehinām.
57. A fire-cloud became like a burned cloud-mountain with great smoke and flames, (affecting) those distressed by the forgetting of essence, those who are empty, and those with expansive bodies.
शुष्काणां व्योमविटपिपत्राणां पात्ररूपिणाम् ।
वारिदानां सवारीणां दग्धानां प्रलयार्चिषा ॥ ५८ ॥

58. प्रलयार्चिषा दग्धानाम् शुष्काणाम् व्योमविटपिपत्राणाम् पात्ररूपिणाम् वारिदानाम् सवारीणाम्।
58. All things – the dry ones, the leaves of sky-trees, those shaped like vessels, and the water-bearing clouds – are burned by the flames of dissolution (pralaya).
ज्ञस्येवाङ्ग न दोषाणां दृष्टं भस्मापि न क्वचित् ।
न लङ्घयति कैलासं यावदुल्लसितोऽनलः ॥ ५९ ॥
jñasyevāṅga na doṣāṇāṃ dṛṣṭaṃ bhasmāpi na kvacit ,
na laṅghayati kailāsaṃ yāvadullasito'nalaḥ 59
59. jñasya iva aṅga na doṣāṇām dṛṣṭam bhasmā api na
kvacit na laṅghayati kailāsam yāvat ullasitaḥ analaḥ
59. अङ्ग,
ज्ञस्य इव दोषाणाम् भस्मा अपि क्वचित् न दृष्टम्यावत् अनलः उल्लसितः,
कैलासम् न लङ्घयति।
59. O dear one, for a knower, not even the ash of faults is ever seen, just as a blazing fire does not cross Mount Kailasa.
तावत्तं कल्पकुपितो रुद्रो नेत्राग्निनादहत् ।
दाहस्फुटद्द्रुमस्थूलशिलाचटचटारवाः ॥ ६० ॥
tāvattaṃ kalpakupito rudro netrāgninādahat ,
dāhasphuṭaddrumasthūlaśilācaṭacaṭāravāḥ 60

60. Meanwhile, Rudra, enraged as if at the dissolution of a cosmic cycle (kalpa), burned him with the fire from his eye. The burning was so intense that trees and large rocks burst apart with crackling sounds.
लकुटोपललोष्टौघैरयुध्यन्तेव भूभृतः ।
ज्वालाघनघटाटोपसावतंसचलान्तिमाः ॥ ६१ ॥

61. The mountains, as if fighting, hurled masses of clubs, stones, and clods of earth, their peaks adorned with flickering crests of dense, blazing flames.
बभूवुर्व्योमविकसत्स्थूलपद्मवना इव ।
सर्गः कदाचिदेवासीदित्यगात्स्मरणीयताम् ॥ ६२ ॥
babhūvurvyomavikasatsthūlapadmavanā iva ,
sargaḥ kadācidevāsīdityagātsmaraṇīyatām 62
62. babhūvuḥ vyomavikasatsthūlapadmavanāḥ iva
sargaḥ kadācit eva āsīt iti agāt smaraṇīyatām
62. te vyomavikasatsthūlapadmavanāḥ iva babhūvuḥ.
sargaḥ kadācit eva āsīt iti smaraṇīyatām agāt.
62. They appeared like vast lotus forests blooming in the sky. It was as if the very act of creation (sarga) had become merely a memory.
कल्पान्तः स्मारयन्मूर्खानगादस्मरणीयताम् ।
तापोपतापपरमाः परमारणतत्पराः ।
वह्नयोऽपह्नवं चक्रुर्जगतामसतामिव ॥ ६३ ॥
kalpāntaḥ smārayanmūrkhānagādasmaraṇīyatām ,
tāpopatāpaparamāḥ paramāraṇatatparāḥ ,
vahnayo'pahnavaṃ cakrurjagatāmasatāmiva 63

apahnavaṃ cakruḥ jagatām asatām iva

63. The cosmic dissolution (kalpānta), while reminding the foolish, itself attained the state of being forgotten (asmaraṇīyatā). The fires, intensely oppressive with heat and torment, and entirely focused on ultimate annihilation, caused the destruction of the worlds, just as the wicked bring about ruin.
ववुरशनिनिपातपीडिताङ्गाः कचदनलोल्मुकगुल्ममण्डलाभाः ।
प्रलयसमयवायवोऽनलान्ताद्दलदमरावलयो लये लिहन्तः ॥ ६४ ॥

64. The winds of the time of cosmic dissolution (pralaya) blew, their forms battered by the impact of thunderbolts and appearing like circles and clusters of blazing firebrands. Causing the ranks of immortals (devas) to break apart and licking up all things during the dissolution, they blew forth as if from the very extremity of fire.
व्यालोलस्फुटदानलद्रुमवनप्रोद्भूतभस्मोष्मणा दत्ताभ्राभ्रमदुल्मुकाहतिवहत्साङ्गारगौरार्चिषः ।
भ्रश्यत्पावकशृङ्गमध्यविलसज्ज्वालावलीश्यामला निःशेषाग्निनिकाशसुस्तवजवा वेगेन वाता ववुः ॥ ६५ ॥
vyālolasphuṭadānaladrumavanaprodbhūtabhasmoṣmaṇā dattābhrābhramadulmukāhativahatsāṅgāragaurārciṣaḥ ,
bhraśyatpāvakaśṛṅgamadhyavilasajjvālāvalīśyāmalā niḥśeṣāgninikāśasustavajavā vegena vātā vavuḥ 65
65. vyālolasphuṭadanala-druma-vana-prodbhūtabhasmoṣmaṇā
dattābhrābhramadulmukāhativahatsaṅgāragaurārciṣaḥ
bhraśyatpāvakaśṛṅgamadhyavilasajjvālāvalīśyāmalāḥ
niḥśeṣāgninikāśasustavajavāḥ vegena vātāḥ vavuḥ
65. vātāḥ vyālolasphuṭadanala-druma-vana-prodbhūtabhasmoṣmaṇā
dattābhrābhramadulmukāhativahatsaṅgāragaurārciṣaḥ
bhraśyatpāvakaśṛṅgamadhyavilasajjvālāvalīśyāmalāḥ
niḥśeṣāgninikāśasustavajavāḥ vegena vavuḥ
65. The winds blew with great speed. They had brilliant, coal-white flames, which, due to the heat of the ashes generated from forests of violently agitated, bursting fire-trees, bore the impact of scattering clouds and wandering firebrands. They were dark-colored, with rows of flames shining amidst falling peaks of fire, and possessed an exceedingly swift velocity, like a boundless conflagration.
