एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राजमहिषी मत्तयौवना ।
तद्विवेश गृहं लक्ष्मीरिव पङ्कजकोटरम् ॥ १ ॥

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: In the meantime, the queen, in the prime of her youth, entered that house, just as Lakṣmī (lakṣmī) enters the calyx of a lotus.

Her garlands swaying and garments disarrayed, distressed by her broken pearl necklaces, and agitated by fear, she was followed by her female friends and maidservants.
चन्द्राननावदाताङ्गी श्वासोत्कम्पिपयोधरा ।
तारकाकारदशना स्थिता द्यौरिव रूपिणी ॥ ३ ॥

With a moon-like face and lustrous limbs, her breasts heaving from her breathing, and her teeth like stars, she stood, appearing like the personified sky.
अथ तस्या वयस्यैका राजानं तं व्यजिज्ञपत् ।
भूतसंग्रामसंरब्धममरेन्द्रमिवाप्सराः ॥ ४ ॥

Then, one of her female friends informed that king, much like an Apsara (celestial nymph) would inform Indra, the king of the gods, who is enraged in a battle with demons.
राजन्दारा हृतास्तास्ते बलवद्भिरुदायुधैः ।
ऊर्मिजालैर्महाब्धीनां तीरद्रुमलता इव ॥ ६ ॥

O King! Your wives have been abducted by powerful, weapon-wielding individuals, just as the creepers on trees on the riverbanks are torn away by the multitudes of waves from the great oceans.
अन्तःपुराधिपाः सर्वे पिष्टाः शत्रुभिरुद्धतैः ।
अशङ्किताभिपतितैर्वातैरिव वरद्रुमाः ॥ ७ ॥

All the lords of the inner quarters were crushed by the arrogant enemies, just as excellent trees are felled by unexpectedly violent winds.
दूरेणाशङ्कमायातैः परैर्नः पुरमाहृतम् ।
रात्रौ वर्षास्विवोद्धोषैः कमलानीव वारिभिः ॥ ८ ॥

Our city was seized by enemies who approached, causing apprehension from afar, just as lotuses are overwhelmed by the waters and loud roars during a rainy night.
धूमं वर्षद्भिरुन्नादैर्लेलिहानोग्रहेतिभिः ।
वह्निभिर्नः पुरं प्राप्तं परयोधैश्च भूरिभिः ॥ ९ ॥

Our city was besieged by numerous enemy warriors and by fires that showered smoke, roared loudly, and licked forth with terrible destructive power.
परिवारैर्विलासिन्यो देव्य आहृत्य मूर्धजैः ।
आक्रन्दन्त्यो बलान्नीताः कुरर्य इव धीवरैः ॥ १० ॥

The beautiful women and royal ladies, along with their attendants, were forcibly carried off, crying out, after being seized by their hair, just as ospreys are carried off by fishermen.
इति नो येयमायाता शाखा प्रसरशालिनी ।
आपत्तामलमुद्धर्तुं देवस्यैवास्ति शक्तता ॥ ११ ॥

Thus, regarding this widespread branch of ours that has emerged, only the divine's power (śakti) is capable of removing calamity.
इत्याकर्ण्यावलोक्यासौ देव्यौ युद्धाय याम्यतः ।
क्षम्यतां मम भार्येयं युष्मत्पादाब्जषट्पदी ॥ १२ ॥

Thus, having heard and seen (this), he addressed the two goddesses who were proceeding southwards for battle: 'May this wife of mine, who is like a female bee hovering around your lotus-feet, be forgiven.'

मत्तेभनिर्भिन्नवनः कन्दरादिव केसरी ॥ १३ ॥

Having spoken thus, the king, whose eyes were reddened with anger, departed, just as a lion emerges from a cave after having scattered a forest of furious elephants.
लीला लीलां ददर्शाथ स्वाकारसदृशाकृतिम् ।
प्रतिबिम्बमिवायातामादर्शे चारुदर्शनाम् ॥ १४ ॥

Then Līlā saw another Līlā, whose appearance was exactly like her own form and who was beautiful to behold, as if she were a reflection that had appeared in a mirror.
