इत्थं विचारपरयोर्मुनिराघवयोस्तयोः ।
भास्करः श्रवणायेव व्योममध्यमुपाययौ ॥ १ ॥

1. śrīvālmīkiḥ uvāca: ittham vicāra-parayoḥ tayoḥ muni-rāghavayoḥ,
bhāskaraḥ śravaṇāya iva vyoma-madhyam upāyayau.
1. Śrī Vālmīki said: While those two, the sage and Rāghava, were thus absorbed in deliberation, the sun (bhāskaraḥ) ascended to the middle of the sky, as if to listen.
तीक्ष्णतामाजगामाशु सर्वदिक्कमथातपः ।
पदार्थौघविकासार्थं रामस्येव महामतिः ॥ २ ॥
tīkṣṇatāmājagāmāśu sarvadikkamathātapaḥ ,
padārthaughavikāsārthaṃ rāmasyeva mahāmatiḥ 2
2. tīkṣṇatām ājagāma āśu sarvadikkam atha ātapaḥ
padārthaughavikāsārtham rāmasya iva mahāmatiḥ
2. atha sarvadikkam ātapaḥ āśu tīkṣṇatām ājagāma
padārthaughavikāsārtham rāmasya mahāmatiḥ iva
2. Then, the heat (ātapaḥ), pervasive in all directions, quickly intensified, for the development and manifestation of the multitude of objects, just like the great intellect (mahāmati) of Rama (for the manifestation of understanding).
उत्फुल्लहृदयाम्भोजस्फाराकारतया तदा ।
लीलापद्माकरा रेजुस्तत्रस्थाः पार्थिवा इव ॥ ३ ॥
utphullahṛdayāmbhojasphārākāratayā tadā ,
līlāpadmākarā rejustatrasthāḥ pārthivā iva 3
3. utphullahṛdayāmbhojasphārākāratayā tadā
līlāpadmākarāḥ rejuḥ tatrasthāḥ pārthivāḥ iva

3. Then, the pleasure-ponds (līlāpadmākarāḥ), with their full-blown, lotus-like hearts widely expanded, shone like kings (pārthivāḥ) present there.
जालं मुक्ताकलापानन्तरमाक्रान्तभास्करम् ।
ननर्तेव तरद्व्योम विज्ञानश्रवणादिव ॥ ४ ॥
jālaṃ muktākalāpānantaramākrāntabhāskaram ,
nanarteva taradvyoma vijñānaśravaṇādiva 4
4. jālam muktākalāpānantaram ākrāntabhāskaram
nanarta iva tarat vyoma vijñānaśravaṇāt iva
4. tarat vyoma jālam muktākalāpānantaram
ākrāntabhāskaram vijñānaśravaṇāt iva nanarta iva
4. The flying network of light (jālam) in the sky (vyoma), which resembled an unbroken string of pearls and had enveloped the sun, danced as if (it were dancing) from hearing profound knowledge (vijñāna).
पुस्फुरुः पद्मरागेषु लग्नार्कतरुणत्विषः ।
भासो व्योमतलोड्डीना धियो ज्ञानकला इव ॥ ५ ॥
pusphuruḥ padmarāgeṣu lagnārkataruṇatviṣaḥ ,
bhāso vyomataloḍḍīnā dhiyo jñānakalā iva 5
5. pusphuruḥ padmarāgeṣu lagnārkataraṇatviṣaḥ
bhāsaḥ vyomataloḍḍīnāḥ dhiyaḥ jñānakalāḥ iva
5. padmarāgeṣu lagnārkataraṇatviṣaḥ vyomataloḍḍīnāḥ
bhāsaḥ dhiyaḥ jñānakalāḥ iva pusphuruḥ
5. The splendors, which were the young sun-rays fixed upon the rubies (padmarāgeṣu) and which flew upwards from the surface of the sky, burst forth like facets of knowledge (jñānakalāḥ) within intellects (dhiyaḥ).
रवावौर्वोपत्र व्योम महाब्धेर्नाभितां गते ।
तेजःपुञ्जलसज्ज्वाले समग्ररसपायिनि ॥ ७ ॥
ravāvaurvopatra vyoma mahābdhernābhitāṃ gate ,
tejaḥpuñjalasajjvāle samagrarasapāyini 7
7. ravau aurva-utpātre vyoma mahā-abdheḥ nābhitām gate

7. When the sun, which serves as a receptacle for the submarine fire (aurva) and has attained the central position of the great ocean, with the sky (vyoma) [present]; and [when this sun is] brilliantly shining with masses of light and flames, absorbing all moisture.
नभोनीलोत्पले नीले गलद्रजसि राजति ।
घर्मांशुकर्णिकाकान्ते स्फुरत्किरणकेसरे ॥ ८ ॥
nabhonīlotpale nīle galadrajasi rājati ,
gharmāṃśukarṇikākānte sphuratkiraṇakesare 8
8. nabhaḥ-nīla-utapale nīle galat-rajasi rājati |
gharmāṃśu-karṇikā-kānte sphurat-kiraṇa-kesare ||
8. nabhaḥ-nīla-utapale nīle galat-rajasi rājati
gharmāṃśu-karṇikā-kānte sphurat-kiraṇa-kesare
8. Shining resplendently within the blue sky-lotus, [which is] blue and shedding pollen; [the sun is] radiant like the central pericarp of the sun, with its gleaming rays as filaments.
अवतंसे जगल्लक्ष्म्यास्त्रिलोकीकर्णकुण्डले ।
अन्तर्लीनस्फुरत्तारारत्नराजिविराजिते ॥ ९ ॥
avataṃse jagallakṣmyāstrilokīkarṇakuṇḍale ,
antarlīnasphurattārāratnarājivirājite 9
9. avataṃse jagat-lakṣmyāḥ tri-lokī-karṇa-kuṇḍale
| antar-līna-sphurat-tārā-ratna-rāji-virājite ||
9. jagat-lakṣmyāḥ avataṃse tri-lokī-karṇa-kuṇḍale
antar-līna-sphurat-tārā-ratna-rāji-virājite
9. As the crest-jewel adorning the beauty of the world, and the earring of the three worlds, [it is] radiant with arrays of gleaming star-jewels contained within.
दिग्वधूभिर्बृहच्छृङ्गपाणिभिर्मुकुरेष्विव ।
धृतेषु तापभिन्नेषु महाभ्रेषु निरम्बुषु ॥ १० ॥
digvadhūbhirbṛhacchṛṅgapāṇibhirmukureṣviva ,
dhṛteṣu tāpabhinneṣu mahābhreṣu nirambuṣu 10
10. dik-vadhūbhiḥ bṛhat-śṛṅga-pāṇibhiḥ mukureṣu iva |
dhṛteṣu tāpa-bhinneṣu mahā-abhreṣu nira-ambuşu ||
10. dik-vadhūbhiḥ bṛhat-śṛṅga-pāṇibhiḥ mahā-abhreṣu
tāpa-bhinneṣu nira-ambuşu mukureṣu iva dhṛteṣu
10. By the wives of the directions, whose hands are like great mountain peaks, the great clouds - split by intense heat and waterless - are held as if reflected in mirrors.
सूर्यकान्तवरोत्थेन वह्निनेव समेधिते ।
द्विगुणं प्रज्वलत्यर्कशून्ये गगनधामनि ॥ ११ ॥
sūryakāntavarotthena vahnineva samedhite ,
dviguṇaṃ prajvalatyarkaśūnye gaganadhāmani 11
11. sūryakānta-vara-utthena vahninā iva samedhite
dviguṇam prajvalati arka-śūnye gagana-dhāmani
11. arka-śūnye gagana-dhāmani sūryakānta-vara-utthena
vahninā iva samedhite [it] dviguṇam prajvalati
11. In the sunless sky, it blazed with double intensity, as if ignited by the fire generated from the supreme sunstone.
विनेदुर्मेदुरोद्दाममुखमारुतपूरिताः ।
मध्याह्नशङ्खाः कल्पान्तवातपूर्णा इवार्णवाः ॥ १२ ॥
vinedurmeduroddāmamukhamārutapūritāḥ ,
madhyāhnaśaṅkhāḥ kalpāntavātapūrṇā ivārṇavāḥ 12
12. vineduḥ medura-uddāma-mukha-māruta-pūritāḥ
madhyāhna-śaṅkhāḥ kalpānta-vāta-pūrṇāḥ iva arṇavāḥ
12. medura-uddāma-mukha-māruta-pūritāḥ madhyāhna-śaṅkhāḥ
kalpānta-vāta-pūrṇāḥ arṇavāḥ iva vineduḥ
12. The midday conch shells roared, filled with robust and powerful breaths from mouths, resembling oceans swollen with the winds of cosmic dissolution.
प्रालेयश्रीरिवाब्जेषु घर्मश्रीर्वदनेष्विव ।
चकार पदमाकीर्णशुद्धमुक्ताफलोपमा ॥ १३ ॥
prāleyaśrīrivābjeṣu gharmaśrīrvadaneṣviva ,
cakāra padamākīrṇaśuddhamuktāphalopamā 13
13. prāleya-śrīḥ iva abjeṣu gharma-śrīḥ vadaneṣu
iva cakāra padam ākīrṇa-śuddha-muktāphala-upamā
13. ākīrṇa-śuddha-muktāphala-upamā prāleya-śrīḥ
abjeṣu iva gharma-śrīḥ vadaneṣu iva padam cakāra
13. That which resembled scattered pure pearls, appearing like the glistening of frost on lotuses or the sheen of sweat on faces, left its mark.
गृहभित्तिपरावृत्ता सत्त्वसंरम्भमांसला ।
शब्दश्रीः पूरयामास कर्णमर्ण इवार्णवम् ॥ १४ ॥
gṛhabhittiparāvṛttā sattvasaṃrambhamāṃsalā ,
śabdaśrīḥ pūrayāmāsa karṇamarṇa ivārṇavam 14
14. gṛha-bhitti-parāvṛttā sattva-saṃrambha-māṃsalā
śabda-śrīḥ pūrayāmāsa karṇam arṇaḥ iva arṇavam
14. gṛha-bhitti-parāvṛttā sattva-saṃrambha-māṃsalā
śabda-śrīḥ arṇaḥ arṇavam iva karṇam pūrayāmāsa
14. The glorious sound, reflected from the house walls and vibrant with the intensity of living beings, filled the ear just as water fills the ocean.
पुरन्ध्रीभिर्निदाघौघशान्तये समुदीरिता ।
उल्ललास नवा पाण्डुकर्पूरजलदावलिः ॥ १५ ॥
purandhrībhirnidāghaughaśāntaye samudīritā ,
ullalāsa navā pāṇḍukarpūrajaladāvaliḥ 15
15. purandhrībhiḥ nidāghaughaśāntaye samudīritā

15. A new array of pale, camphor-like clouds, invoked by the women to alleviate the oppressive summer heat, appeared gracefully.
स राजा सहसामन्तः सभूपः सपरिच्छदः ।
सवसिष्ठः समुत्तस्थौ सहरामः स संसदः ॥ १६ ॥
sa rājā sahasāmantaḥ sabhūpaḥ saparicchadaḥ ,
savasiṣṭhaḥ samuttasthau saharāmaḥ sa saṃsadaḥ 16
16. saḥ rājā sahasāmantaḥ sabhūpaḥ saparicchadaḥ
savasiṣṭhaḥ samuttasthau saharāmaḥ saḥ saṃsadaḥ
16. sa rājā sahasāmantaḥ sabhūpaḥ saparicchadaḥ
savasiṣṭhaḥ saharāmaḥ sa saṃsadaḥ samuttasthau
16. That king, accompanied by his feudatories, his princes, his retinue, Vasiṣṭha, Rāma, and the assembly, arose.
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च मन्त्रिणो मुनयस्तथा ।
अन्योन्यं पूजिता जग्मुर्मुदिताः स्वं निवेशनम् ॥ १७ ॥
rājāno rājaputrāśca mantriṇo munayastathā ,
anyonyaṃ pūjitā jagmurmuditāḥ svaṃ niveśanam 17
17. rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca mantriṇaḥ munayaḥ tathā
anyonyam pūjitāḥ jagmuḥ muditāḥ svam niveśanam
17. rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca mantriṇaḥ munayaḥ tathā
anyonyam pūjitāḥ muditāḥ svam niveśanam jagmuḥ
17. The kings, princes, ministers, and also the sages, having mutually honored each other, joyfully went to their own dwellings.
अन्तःपुरगृहाग्रेषु तालवृन्तानिलाहृतैः ।
कर्पूरधूलिभिरभून्नवैवाम्बुदमालिका ॥ १८ ॥
antaḥpuragṛhāgreṣu tālavṛntānilāhṛtaiḥ ,
karpūradhūlibhirabhūnnavaivāmbudamālikā 18
18. antaḥpuragṛhāgreṣu tālavṛntānilāhṛtaiḥ
karpūradhūlibhiḥ abhūt navā eva ambudamālikā
18. antaḥpuragṛhāgreṣu tālavṛntānilāhṛtaiḥ
karpūradhūlibhiḥ navā eva ambudamālikā abhūt
18. In the courtyards of the inner apartments, a truly new garland of clouds appeared from the camphor dust carried by the breezes of palm-leaf fans.
अथ मध्याह्नतूर्याणां रवे स्फूर्जति भित्तिषु ।
उवाच वचनं वाक्यकोविदो मुनिनायकः ॥ १९ ॥
atha madhyāhnatūryāṇāṃ rave sphūrjati bhittiṣu ,
uvāca vacanaṃ vākyakovido munināyakaḥ 19
19. atha madhyāhnatūryāṇām rave sphūrjati bhittiṣu
uvāca vacanam vākyakovidaḥ munināyakaḥ
19. atha madhyāhnatūryāṇām rave bhittiṣu sphūrjati
vākyakovidaḥ munināyakaḥ vacanam uvāca
19. Now, as the sound of the midday trumpets resounded on the walls, the chief of sages, an expert in speech, spoke these words.
सर्वमेव श्रुतं श्राव्यं ज्ञेयं ज्ञातमशेषतः ।
त्वया राघव भो नास्ति ज्ञातव्यमपरं वरम् ॥ २० ॥
sarvameva śrutaṃ śrāvyaṃ jñeyaṃ jñātamaśeṣataḥ ,
tvayā rāghava bho nāsti jñātavyamaparaṃ varam 20
20. sarvam eva śrutam śrāvyam jñeyam jñātam aśeṣataḥ
tvayā rāghava bho na asti jñātavyam aparam varam
20. bho rāghava tvayā sarvam eva śrutam śrāvyam aśeṣataḥ
jñātam jñeyam aparam varam jñātavyam na asti
20. O Rāghava, indeed everything that is to be heard has been heard by you, and everything that is to be known has been completely known. There is nothing else superior left to be known.
यथा मयोपदिष्टोऽसि यथा पश्यसि शास्त्रतः ।
यथानुभवसि श्रेष्ठमेकवाक्यं तथा कुरु ॥ २१ ॥
yathā mayopadiṣṭo'si yathā paśyasi śāstrataḥ ,
yathānubhavasi śreṣṭhamekavākyaṃ tathā kuru 21
21. yathā mayā upadiṣṭaḥ asi yathā paśyasi śāstrataḥ
yathā anubhavasi śreṣṭham ekavākyam tathā kuru
21. yathā mayā upadiṣṭaḥ asi yathā śāstrataḥ paśyasi
yathā śreṣṭham anubhavasi tathā ekavākyam kuru
21. Just as you have been instructed by me, just as you perceive through the scriptures, and just as you experience the supreme, so make them a consistent whole.
उत्तिष्ठ तावत्कार्याय वयं स्नातुं महामते ।
मध्याह्नसमयोऽस्माकमयमङ्गातिवर्तते ॥ २२ ॥
uttiṣṭha tāvatkāryāya vayaṃ snātuṃ mahāmate ,
madhyāhnasamayo'smākamayamaṅgātivartate 22
22. uttiṣṭha tāvat kāryāya vayam snātum mahāmate
madhyāhnasamayaḥ asmākam ayam aṅga ativartate
22. mahāmate aṅga tāvat kāryāya uttiṣṭha vayam
snātum ayam asmākam madhyāhnasamayaḥ ativartate
22. O great-minded one, rise up now for the task (of bathing); we must bathe. O dear one, our midday time is passing by.
अपरं यत्त्वया भद्र स्वाकाङ्क्षाविनिवृत्तये ।
प्रष्टव्यं तच्छुभं प्रातः प्रष्टव्यं भवता पुनः ॥ २३ ॥
aparaṃ yattvayā bhadra svākāṅkṣāvinivṛttaye ,
praṣṭavyaṃ tacchubhaṃ prātaḥ praṣṭavyaṃ bhavatā punaḥ 23
23. aparam yat tvayā bhadra svākāṅkṣāvinivṛttaye
praṣṭavyam tat śubham prātaḥ praṣṭavyam bhavatā punaḥ
23. bhadra,
tvayā svākāṅkṣāvinivṛttaye aparam yat śubham praṣṭavyam,
tat punaḥ prātaḥ bhavatā praṣṭavyam.
23. O good one, whatever other auspicious matter is to be asked by you for the cessation of your own desires, that should be asked by you again in the morning.
श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच ।
इत्युक्ते मुनिनाथेन राजा दशरथः स्वयम् ।
पूजयामास तान्सभ्यान्सर्वान्साधून्सपर्यया ॥ २४ ॥
śrīvālmīkiruvāca ,
ityukte munināthena rājā daśarathaḥ svayam ,
pūjayāmāsa tānsabhyānsarvānsādhūnsaparyayā 24
24. śrīvālmīkiḥ uvāca iti ukte munināthena rājā daśarathaḥ
svayam pūjayāmāsa tān sabhyān sarvān sādhūn saparyayā
24. śrīvālmīkiḥ uvāca: munināthena iti ukte,
rājā daśarathaḥ svayam,
saparyayā tān sarvān sabhyān sādhūn pūjayāmāsa.
24. Śrī Vālmīki said: When the lord of sages had thus spoken, King Daśaratha himself, with respectful offerings, honored all those venerable members of the assembly.
सह रामेण धर्मात्मा मुनिविप्रान्नृपांश्च सः ।
वसिष्ठाद्युपदिष्टेन क्रमेण व्योमगांस्तथा ॥ २५ ॥
saha rāmeṇa dharmātmā muniviprānnṛpāṃśca saḥ ,
vasiṣṭhādyupadiṣṭena krameṇa vyomagāṃstathā 25
25. saha rāmeṇa dharmātmā muniviprān nṛpān ca saḥ
vasiṣṭhaādiupadiṣṭena krameṇa vyomagān tathā
25. saḥ dharmātmā rāmeṇa saha,
vasiṣṭhaādiupadiṣṭena krameṇa,
muniviprān nṛpān ca tathā vyomagān (pūjayāmāsa).
25. He, the righteous-souled (dharmātmā) king, along with Rāma, honored the sages, Brahmins, kings, and also the celestial beings, in the proper order as instructed by Vasiṣṭha and others.
मणिमुक्तागणार्थेन दिव्येन कुसुमेन च ।
मणिरत्नप्रदानेन मुक्ताहारार्पणेन च ॥ २६ ॥
maṇimuktāgaṇārthena divyena kusumena ca ,
maṇiratnapradānena muktāhārārpaṇena ca 26
26. maṇimuktāgaṇaarthena divyena kusumena ca
maṇiratnapradānena muktāhāraarpaṇena ca
26. (saḥ pūjayāmāsa) maṇimuktāgaṇaarthena,
divyena kusumena ca,
maṇiratnapradānena ca,
muktāhāraarpaṇena ca.
26. He honored them with valuable assortments of jewels and pearls, and with divine flowers; and also by bestowing precious gems and by offering pearl necklaces.
प्रणयेन प्रणामेन प्रदानेनार्थशालिना ।
वस्त्रासनान्नपानेन कनकेन तथा भुवा ॥ २७ ॥
praṇayena praṇāmena pradānenārthaśālinā ,
vastrāsanānnapānena kanakena tathā bhuvā 27
27. praṇayena praṇāmena pradānena arthaśālinā
vastrasanānnapānena kanakena tathā bhuvā

27. With affection, salutations, and valuable offerings, as well as with clothes, seats, food, drink, gold, and land.
धूपेन गन्धमाल्याभ्यां यथोदितमनिन्दितः ।
पूर्वान्संपूजयामास सर्वानेव महीपतिः ॥ २८ ॥
dhūpena gandhamālyābhyāṃ yathoditamaninditaḥ ,
pūrvānsaṃpūjayāmāsa sarvāneva mahīpatiḥ 28
28. dhūpena gandhamālyābhyām yathoditam aninditaḥ
pūrvān saṃpūjayāmāsa sarvān eva mahīpatiḥ
28. mahīpatiḥ aninditaḥ dhūpena gandhamālyābhyām
yathoditam sarvān eva pūrvān saṃpūjayāmāsa
28. With incense, and with perfumes and garlands, the blameless king worshipped all his ancestors as prescribed.
अथोत्तस्थौ सभामध्यात्सभया सह मानदः ।
सवसिष्ठादिदेवर्षिः सायमिन्दुरिवाम्बरात् ॥ २९ ॥
athottasthau sabhāmadhyātsabhayā saha mānadaḥ ,
savasiṣṭhādidevarṣiḥ sāyamindurivāmbarāt 29
29. atha uttastau sabhāmadhyāt sabhayā saha mānadaḥ
savasiṣṭhādidevarṣiḥ sāyam induḥ iva ambarāt
29. atha mānadaḥ savasiṣṭhādidevarṣiḥ sabhayā saha
sabhāmadhyāt uttastau sāyam ambarāt induḥ iva
29. Then, the honorable one (the king), along with the assembly and the divine sages headed by Vasiṣṭha, rose from the midst of the assembly, just like the moon rises from the sky in the evening.
ससभोत्थानसमयः ससंरम्भो व्यराजत ।
जानुदघ्नसुरोन्मुक्तपुष्पसंजातकर्दमः ॥ ३० ॥
sasabhotthānasamayaḥ sasaṃrambho vyarājata ,
jānudaghnasuronmuktapuṣpasaṃjātakardamaḥ 30
30. sasabhottānasamayaḥ sasaṃrambhaḥ vyarājata
jānudaghnasuronmuktapuṣpasaṃjātakardamaḥ
30. sasabhottānasamayaḥ sasaṃrambhaḥ
jānudaghnasuronmuktapuṣpasaṃjātakardamaḥ vyarājata
30. The moment of the assembly's rising, bustling with activity, was splendid, with knee-deep mire formed from the flowers showered by the gods.
संघट्टाघट्टकेयूररत्नचूर्णारुणावनिः ।
छिन्नहारस्फुरन्मुक्ताताराजितनिशाम्बरः ॥ ३१ ॥
saṃghaṭṭāghaṭṭakeyūraratnacūrṇāruṇāvaniḥ ,
chinnahārasphuranmuktātārājitaniśāmbaraḥ 31
31. saṃghaṭṭāghaṭṭakeyūraratnacūrṇāruṇāvaniḥ
chinnahārasphuranmuktātārājitaniśāmbaraḥ
31. saṃghaṭṭāghaṭṭakeyūraratnacūrṇāruṇāvaniḥ
chinnahārasphuranmuktātārājitaniśāmbaraḥ
31. He whose ground is crimsoned by the jewel dust from armlets clashing together, and whose expanse, like a night sky, is outshone by the stars of glittering pearls from broken necklaces.
देवर्षिमुनिविप्रेन्द्रपार्थिवस्पन्दसंकुलः ।
व्यग्रभृत्याङ्गनाहस्तकेशचञ्चलचामरः ॥ ३२ ॥

32. He who is crowded with the movements of divine sages (devarṣi), hermits, chief brahmins, and kings; and whose fly-whisk (cāmara), made of hair, is agitated by the hands of his busy female attendants.
ज्ञानप्रमेयीकरणस्पन्दमानो न दारुणः ।
शिरःकरत्रिनयनजिह्वेष्वेव विराजितः ॥ ३३ ॥
jñānaprameyīkaraṇaspandamāno na dāruṇaḥ ,
śiraḥkaratrinayanajihveṣveva virājitaḥ 33
33. jñānaprameyīkaraṇaspandamānaḥ na dāruṇaḥ
śiraḥkaratrinayanajihveṣu eva virājitaḥ
33. jñānaprameyīkaraṇaspandamānaḥ na dāruṇaḥ

33. He is not terrifying (dāruṇa), moving as he makes knowledge (jñāna) an object of valid cognition (prameya). Indeed, he is manifest only in heads, hands, three eyes, and tongues.
परस्परमथापृच्छ्य पूजिताः पेशलोक्तयः ।
राजानो मुनयश्चैव सर्वे दशरथादयः ॥ ३४ ॥
parasparamathāpṛcchya pūjitāḥ peśaloktayaḥ ,
rājāno munayaścaiva sarve daśarathādayaḥ 34
34. parasparam atha āpṛcchya pūjitāḥ peśaloktayaḥ
rājānaḥ munayaḥ ca eva sarve daśarathādayaḥ
34. atha parasparam āpṛcchya sarve daśarathādayaḥ
rājānaḥ ca munayaḥ ca peśaloktayaḥ eva pūjitāḥ
34. Then, after mutually taking leave, all the kings and sages, including Dasaratha and others, whose words were pleasant, were honored.
स्वाश्रमान्साधवो जग्मुस्तुष्टस्निग्धाशया मिथः ।
लोकसप्तकवास्तव्या देवाः शक्रपुरादिव ॥ ३५ ॥
svāśramānsādhavo jagmustuṣṭasnigdhāśayā mithaḥ ,
lokasaptakavāstavyā devāḥ śakrapurādiva 35
35. svāśramān sādhavaḥ jagmuḥ tuṣṭa-snigdhāśayāḥ mithaḥ
loka-saptaka-vāstavyāḥ devāḥ śakra-purāt iva
35. sādhavaḥ mithaḥ tuṣṭa-snigdhāśayāḥ svāśramān jagmuḥ
loka-saptaka-vāstavyāḥ devāḥ śakra-purāt iva
35. The sages, their hearts pleased and affectionate towards one another, returned to their own hermitages. The gods, who reside in the seven worlds, similarly departed (as if) from Indra's city.
अन्योन्यं प्रणयात्सर्वे पूजयित्वा यथाक्रमम् ।
तद्विसृष्टाः स्वमागत्य गृहं चक्रुर्दिनक्रियाम् ॥ ३६ ॥
anyonyaṃ praṇayātsarve pūjayitvā yathākramam ,
tadvisṛṣṭāḥ svamāgatya gṛhaṃ cakrurdinakriyām 36
36. anyonyaṃ praṇayāt sarve pūjayitvā yathākramam
tad-visṛṣṭāḥ svam āgatya gṛhaṃ cakruḥ dinakriyām
36. sarve anyonyaṃ praṇayāt yathākramam pūjayitvā
tad-visṛṣṭāḥ svam gṛhaṃ āgatya dinakriyām cakruḥ
36. All of them, after affectionately honoring one another in due order and being dismissed by him, returned to their homes and performed their daily rituals.
अथ सर्वे वसिष्ठाद्यास्तथा दशरथादयः ।
चक्रुर्दिवसकार्याणि राजानो मुनयस्तथा ॥ ३७ ॥
atha sarve vasiṣṭhādyāstathā daśarathādayaḥ ,
cakrurdivasakāryāṇi rājāno munayastathā 37
37. atha sarve vasiṣṭha-ādyāḥ tathā daśaratha-ādayaḥ
cakruḥ divasakāryāṇi rājānaḥ munayaḥ tathā
37. atha sarve vasiṣṭha-ādyāḥ tathā daśaratha-ādayaḥ
rājānaḥ munayaḥ tathā divasakāryāṇi cakruḥ
37. Then, all of them - Vasishtha and the others, as well as Dasharatha and the others, including the kings and sages - performed their daytime duties.
यथाप्राप्तं क्रियां तेषु कृतवत्स्वथ दैवसीम् ।
क्रमेणाकाशपथिको भास्करोऽस्तमुपाययौ ॥ ३८ ॥
yathāprāptaṃ kriyāṃ teṣu kṛtavatsvatha daivasīm ,
krameṇākāśapathiko bhāskaro'stamupāyayau 38
38. yathāprāptaṃ kriyām teṣu kṛtavatsu atha daivasīm
kramena ākāśa-pathikaḥ bhāskaraḥ astam upāyayau
38. teṣu yathāprāptaṃ daivasīm kriyām kṛtavatsu atha
kramena ākāśa-pathikaḥ bhāskaraḥ astam upāyayau
38. After they had performed their appropriate daily duties, then, gradually, the sun, the traveler of the sky, went towards its setting.
तयैव कथया तेषां रामस्य च महामतेः ।
प्रबोधवशतः शीघ्रं सा व्यतीयाय शर्वरी ॥ ३९ ॥
tayaiva kathayā teṣāṃ rāmasya ca mahāmateḥ ,
prabodhavaśataḥ śīghraṃ sā vyatīyāya śarvarī 39
39. tayā eva kathayā teṣām rāmasya ca mahāmateḥ
prabodhavaśataḥ śīghram sā vyatīyāya śarvarī
39. sā śarvarī tayā kathayā teṣām ca mahāmateḥ
rāmasya prabodhavaśataḥ śīghram vyatīyāya
39. That night quickly passed due to the awakening (prabodha) brought about by that very conversation between them and the great-minded Rama.
उत्सारिततमःपांसुताराकुसुमनिर्भरम् ।
भुवनं भवनीकुर्वन्नाजगाम दिवाकरः ॥ ४० ॥
utsāritatamaḥpāṃsutārākusumanirbharam ,
bhuvanaṃ bhavanīkurvannājagāma divākaraḥ 40

40. The sun (divākaraḥ) arrived, making the world clear and bright, after completely dispelling the dust-like darkness and the star-flowers.
करवीरकुसुम्भाभैः करैररुणयन् दिशः ।
विवेश गगनाम्भोधिमथ बालदिवाकरः ॥ ४१ ॥
karavīrakusumbhābhaiḥ karairaruṇayan diśaḥ ,
viveśa gaganāmbhodhimatha bāladivākaraḥ 41
41. karavīrakusumbhābhaiḥ karaiḥ aruṇayan diśaḥ

41. Then, the young sun (bāladivākaraḥ), making the directions reddish with its rays, which resembled karavīra flowers and kusumbha dye, entered the sky-ocean (gaganāmbhodhi).
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च मन्त्रिणो मुनयस्तथा ।
वसिष्ठाद्याः समाजग्मुः पुनर्दाशरथीं सभाम् ॥ ४२ ॥
rājāno rājaputrāśca mantriṇo munayastathā ,
vasiṣṭhādyāḥ samājagmuḥ punardāśarathīṃ sabhām 42
42. rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca mantriṇaḥ munayaḥ tathā
vasiṣṭhādyāḥ samājagmuḥ punar dāśarathīm sabhām
42. rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca mantriṇaḥ tathā munayaḥ
vasiṣṭhādyāḥ punar dāśarathīm sabhām samājagmuḥ
42. Kings, princes, ministers, and sages, headed by Vashistha and others, again assembled in the council (sabhā) of Dasharatha's son (dāśarathī).
यथाक्रमं यथासंस्थं यथादेशं यथासनम् ।
सा विवेश सभा तत्र धिष्ण्यश्रीरम्बरे यथा ॥ ४३ ॥
yathākramaṃ yathāsaṃsthaṃ yathādeśaṃ yathāsanam ,
sā viveśa sabhā tatra dhiṣṇyaśrīrambare yathā 43
43. yathākramam yathāsaṃstham yathādeśam yathāsanam
sā viveśa sabhā tatra dhiṣṇyaśrīḥ ambare yathā
43. sā sabhā tatra yathākramam yathāsaṃstham yathādeśam
yathāsanam viveśa ambare dhiṣṇyaśrīḥ yathā
43. The assembly then took its place there, with everyone seated in proper order, according to their arrangement, designated spot, and individual seat, resembling the brilliant array of stars in the sky.
ततो दशरथाद्येषु सुमन्त्रादिषु चाप्यलम् ।
वसिष्ठं संप्रशंसत्सु मुनिमासनसंस्थितम् ॥ ४४ ॥
tato daśarathādyeṣu sumantrādiṣu cāpyalam ,
vasiṣṭhaṃ saṃpraśaṃsatsu munimāsanasaṃsthitam 44
44. tataḥ daśarathādyeṣu sumantrādiṣu ca api alam
vasiṣṭham saṃpraśaṃsatsu munim āsanasasthitam
44. tataḥ daśarathādyeṣu sumantrādiṣu ca api alam
āsanasasthitam munim vasiṣṭham saṃpraśaṃsatsu
44. Then, while Daśaratha and others, along with Sumantra and others, were highly praising the sage Vasiṣṭha, who was seated on his seat...
वसिष्ठस्य पितुश्चाग्रे राजीवदललोचनः ।
उवाच राघवो धीमान्मृदुवर्णमिदं वचः ॥ ४५ ॥
vasiṣṭhasya pituścāgre rājīvadalalocanaḥ ,
uvāca rāghavo dhīmānmṛduvarṇamidaṃ vacaḥ 45
45. vasiṣṭhasya pituḥ ca agre rājīvadalalocanaḥ
uvāca rāghavaḥ dhīmān mṛduvarṇam idam vacaḥ
45. rājīvadalalocanaḥ dhīmān rāghavaḥ vasiṣṭhasya
pituḥ ca agre mṛduvarṇam idam vacaḥ uvāca
45. And then, before Vasiṣṭha and his father, the intelligent Rāghava (Rāma), whose eyes resembled lotus petals, spoke these gentle words.
श्रीराम उवाच ।
भगवन्सर्वधर्मज्ञ सर्वज्ञानमहार्णव ।
सर्वसंदेहपरशो परशोकभयापह ॥ ४६ ॥
śrīrāma uvāca ,
bhagavansarvadharmajña sarvajñānamahārṇava ,
sarvasaṃdehaparaśo paraśokabhayāpaha 46
46. śrīrāmaḥ uvāca bhagavan sarvadharmajña
sarvajñānamahārṇava sarvasaṃdehaparaśo paraśokabhayāpaha
46. śrīrāmaḥ uvāca bhagavan sarvadharmajña
sarvajñānamahārṇava sarvasaṃdehaparaśo paraśokabhayāpaha
46. Lord Rāma said: "O Venerable One, You are the knower of all aspects of natural law (dharma), a great ocean of all knowledge. You are an axe that severs all doubts, and the dispeller of others' sorrow and fear."
श्रोतव्यमपरं किं मे विद्यते वेद्यमेव वा ।
श्रोतव्यं विद्यते यद्वा तत्सर्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥ ४७ ॥
śrotavyamaparaṃ kiṃ me vidyate vedyameva vā ,
śrotavyaṃ vidyate yadvā tatsarvaṃ vaktumarhasi 47
47. śrotavyam aparam kim me vidyate vedyam eva vā
śrotavyam vidyate yat vā tat sarvam vaktum arhasi
47. me aparam śrotavyam vedyam eva vā kim vidyate
yat vā śrotavyam vidyate tat sarvam vaktum arhasi
47. What else remains for me to hear or to know? Whatever there is still to be heard, you should tell me all of it.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
राम संप्राप्तबुद्धिस्त्वं श्रोतव्यं ते न विद्यते ।
कृतकृत्या तवैषा धीः प्राप्तप्राप्या स्थितात्मनि ॥ ४८ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
rāma saṃprāptabuddhistvaṃ śrotavyaṃ te na vidyate ,
kṛtakṛtyā tavaiṣā dhīḥ prāptaprāpyā sthitātmani 48
48. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca rāma samprāptabuddhiḥ tvam śrotavyam te
na vidyate kṛtakṛtyā tava eṣā dhīḥ prāptaprāpyā sthitātmani
48. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca rāma tvam samprāptabuddhiḥ te śrotavyam
na vidyate eṣā tava dhīḥ kṛtakṛtyā prāptaprāpyā sthitātmani
48. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: O Rāma, you have attained true understanding, and there is nothing further for you to hear. This intellect of yours has accomplished all that needed to be done and has achieved all that was to be achieved, being established in the Self (ātman).
त्वमेव तावत्कथय प्रविचार्य धियात्मना ।
कीदृशोऽद्य भवानन्तः किं शेषं श्राव्यमस्ति ते ॥ ४९ ॥
tvameva tāvatkathaya pravicārya dhiyātmanā ,
kīdṛśo'dya bhavānantaḥ kiṃ śeṣaṃ śrāvyamasti te 49
49. tvam eva tāvat kathaya pravicārya dhiyā ātmanā
kīdṛśaḥ adya bhavān antaḥ kim śeṣam śrāvyam asti te
49. tvam eva tāvat dhiyā ātmanā pravicārya kathaya adya
antaḥ bhavān kīdṛśaḥ te śeṣam śrāvyam kim asti
49. You yourself, first, tell me, after contemplating deeply with your intellect and by your own self: what is your inner state now? And what remains for you to hear?
श्रीराम उवाच ।
ब्रह्मन्नेवमहं मन्ये यथाहं कृतकृत्यधीः ।
निर्वाणोस्मि प्रशान्तोस्मि नाकाङ्क्षा मम विद्यते ॥ ५० ॥
śrīrāma uvāca ,
brahmannevamahaṃ manye yathāhaṃ kṛtakṛtyadhīḥ ,
nirvāṇosmi praśāntosmi nākāṅkṣā mama vidyate 50
50. śrīrāmaḥ uvāca brahman evam aham manye yathā aham kṛtakṛtyadhīḥ
nirvāṇaḥ asmi praśāntaḥ asmi na ākāṅkṣā mama vidyate
50. śrīrāmaḥ uvāca brahman aham evam manye yathā aham kṛtakṛtyadhīḥ
nirvāṇaḥ asmi praśāntaḥ asmi mama ākāṅkṣā na vidyate
50. Śrī Rāma said: O revered Brahman, I believe that my intellect has indeed accomplished all that needed to be done. I am liberated (nirvāṇa), I am completely peaceful, and I have no desires.
वक्तव्यमुक्तं भवता ज्ञातं ज्ञेयं मयाखिलम् ।
तव विश्रान्तिमायातु कृतकृत्या सरस्वती ॥ ५१ ॥
vaktavyamuktaṃ bhavatā jñātaṃ jñeyaṃ mayākhilam ,
tava viśrāntimāyātu kṛtakṛtyā sarasvatī 51
51. vaktavyam uktam bhavatā jñātam jñeyam mayā
akhilam tava viśrāntim āyātu kṛtakṛtyā sarasvatī
51. bhavatā vaktavyam uktam mayā akhilam jñeyam
jñātam kṛtakṛtyā tava sarasvatī viśrāntim āyātu
51. All that needed to be spoken has been uttered by you, and all that was to be known has been fully understood by me. May your speech (Sarasvatī) now find rest, its task accomplished.
अधिगतमधिगम्यं ज्ञेयमाप्तु मयेदं विगतमखिलमैक्यं द्वैतमस्तं प्रयातम् ।
परिगलितमशेषं दृश्यभेदावभानं ननु निपुणमपास्ताशेषसंसारितास्था ॥ ५२ ॥
adhigatamadhigamyaṃ jñeyamāptu mayedaṃ vigatamakhilamaikyaṃ dvaitamastaṃ prayātam ,
parigalitamaśeṣaṃ dṛśyabhedāvabhānaṃ nanu nipuṇamapāstāśeṣasaṃsāritāsthā 52
52. adhigatam adhigamyam jñeyam āptu mayā idam
vigatam akhilam aikyam dvaitam astam prayātam
parigalitam aśeṣam dṛśyabheda avabhānam
nanu nipuṇam apāsta aśeṣa saṃsāritā āsthā
52. mayā idam jñeyam adhigamyam adhigatam āptu
akhilam aikyam dvaitam vigatam astam prayātam
aśeṣam dṛśyabheda avabhānam parigalitam
nanu aśeṣa saṃsāritā āsthā nipuṇam apāstā
52. That which was to be attained has been realized by me; this knowable has been fully grasped. All unity and duality have vanished, having gone to an end. The entire appearance of differentiated phenomena has dissolved. Indeed, the attachment to the entire cycle of transmigration (saṃsāra) has been skillfully eradicated.
