देव पश्यात्र संग्रामलग्नसीमान्तभूभृताम् ।
कचन्ति हेतिसंघाता विसरन्ति बलानि च ॥ १ ॥

The attendants said: 'O king, behold here on this battlefield where kings are engaged in combat (saṅgrāma-lagna-sīmānta-bhūbhṛtām). Heaps of weapons are glistening, and armies are dispersing.'
हतान्हतानभिमुखान्वीरान्वीरैः सहस्रशः ।
आरोप्यारोप्य खं यान्ति पश्य पश्याङ्गनारथैः ॥ २ ॥

Behold! Thousands of heroes (vīras), both those who are slain and those who confronted (the enemy) directly, are repeatedly being lifted by (other) heroes, and ascend to the sky (khaṃ yānti) in chariots of heavenly maidens (aṅganārathaiḥ). Behold, behold!
विजिगीषोः पुनः प्राप्ते संकटे प्रकटे रणे ।
धर्म्यं विराजते युद्धं यौवने सुरतं यथा ॥ ३ ॥

When a clear and challenging situation arises again on the battlefield for a conqueror, a battle fought according to natural law (dharmya yuddha) shines forth like lovemaking (surata) in youth.
लोकैरनिन्दिता लक्ष्मीरारोग्यं श्रीसमन्वितम् ।
धर्म्यं युद्धं परार्थेन जीवितस्योत्तमं फलम् ॥ ४ ॥

Wealth (lakṣmī) that is not condemned by people, good health accompanied by prosperity (śrī), and a battle fought according to natural law (dharmya yuddha) for the benefit of others (parārtha) are considered the supreme fruits of life.
अविरोधेन धर्मस्य युद्धे संमुखमागतम् ।
योधानुरूपं यो हन्ति शूरः स्वर्ग्यः स नेतरः ॥ ५ ॥

A hero who, in battle, slays an enemy who has come face-to-face, doing so in a manner appropriate for a warrior and without violating natural law (dharma), is indeed destined for heaven; no one else is.
हस्तस्थितासिवरनीलसरोजदामश्यामो हयोत्थघनरेणुनिशागमोऽत्र ।
आलोकय क्रमणमेष कथं करोति प्रोन्नामहेतिभरभूषणभाजि लक्ष्म्याः ॥ ६ ॥

Behold, here is he who is dark like a garland of excellent blue lotuses with a sword held in hand, and whose arrival is like the onset of night due to the thick dust raised by horses. See how he moves, displaying the glory (Lakṣmī) of his raised heavy weapons and ornaments.
एते कचन्ति शरशक्तिगदाभुशुण्डीशूलासिकुन्तपटुतोमरचक्रपूर्णाः ।
तापाः सताण्डवकचप्रचले चलेऽब्धौ देहेन वल्गति भुवीव फणीन्द्रसंघाः ॥ ७ ॥

ete kacanti śaraśaktigadābhuśuṇḍīśūlāsikuntapaṭutomaracakrapūrṇāḥ ,
tāpāḥ satāṇḍavakacapracale cale'bdhau dehena valgati bhuvīva phaṇīndrasaṃghāḥ 7
tāpāḥ satāṇḍavakacapracale cale'bdhau dehena valgati bhuvīva phaṇīndrasaṃghāḥ 7

śaraśaktigadābhuśuṇḍīśūlāsikuntapaṭutomarakracakrapūrṇāḥ tāpāḥ
satāṇḍavakacapracale cale abdhau dehena
valgati bhuvi iva phaṇīndrasaṃghāḥ

ete śaraśaktigadābhuśuṇḍīśūlāsikuntapaṭutomarakracakrapūrṇāḥ tāpāḥ kacanti.
(te) satāṇḍavakacapracale cale abdhau dehena bhuvi iva phaṇīndrasaṃghāḥ valgati.

7.
These (weapons), shining intensely and laden with arrows, spears, maces, slings, lances, swords, kunta-lances, sharp javelins, and discuses, are like hosts of great serpents writhing with their bodies as if on earth, within the agitated ocean that is turbulent with dancing waves.
पश्याम्बरं बलवदम्बुधराब्धिपूर्णं पश्याम्बरं तरलतारकतारहारम् ।
पश्याम्बरं सुघनसक्तमसैकसारं पश्याम्बरं विशदचन्द्रकरावसिक्तम् ॥ ८ ॥

Behold the sky, filled with mighty oceans of rain-bearing clouds. Behold the sky, adorned with a sparkling necklace of stars. Behold the sky, clinging with very dense clouds, whose only essence is darkness. Behold the sky, bathed in clear moonbeams.
यत्रानेकसुरासुरास्पदघटा तारापदेशं गता ऋक्षाणां च यदास्पदं विसरतां सर्वोन्नतानां च यत् ।
तस्मिञ्छून्यमिति प्रतीतिरधुनाप्यस्तं गता नाम्बरे कोऽन्यो मार्जयितुं जनोऽज्ञरचितं लोकापवादं क्षमः ॥ ९ ॥
तस्मिञ्छून्यमिति प्रतीतिरधुनाप्यस्तं गता नाम्बरे कोऽन्यो मार्जयितुं जनोऽज्ञरचितं लोकापवादं क्षमः ॥ ९ ॥
yatrānekasurāsurāspadaghaṭā tārāpadeśaṃ gatā ṛkṣāṇāṃ ca yadāspadaṃ visaratāṃ sarvonnatānāṃ ca yat ,
tasmiñchūnyamiti pratītiradhunāpyastaṃ gatā nāmbare ko'nyo mārjayituṃ jano'jñaracitaṃ lokāpavādaṃ kṣamaḥ 9
tasmiñchūnyamiti pratītiradhunāpyastaṃ gatā nāmbare ko'nyo mārjayituṃ jano'jñaracitaṃ lokāpavādaṃ kṣamaḥ 9

yatra anekasurāsurāspadaghaṭā tārāpadeśam gatā ṛkṣāṇām
ca yat āspadam visaratām sarvonnātānām ca yat tasmin
śūnyam iti pratītiḥ adhunā api astam gatā nāma ambare kaḥ
anyaḥ mārjayitum janaḥ ajñarachitam lokāpavādam kṣamaḥ
ca yat āspadam visaratām sarvonnātānām ca yat tasmin
śūnyam iti pratītiḥ adhunā api astam gatā nāma ambare kaḥ
anyaḥ mārjayitum janaḥ ajñarachitam lokāpavādam kṣamaḥ
9.
yatra anekasurāsurāspadaghaṭā tārāpadeśam gatā,
ca yat visaratām ṛkṣāṇām āspadam,
ca yat sarvonnātānām (āspadam asti),
tasmin ambare śūnyam iti pratītiḥ adhunā api nāma astam gatā (asti).
ajñarachitam lokāpavādam mārjayitum kaḥ anyaḥ janaḥ kṣamaḥ (asti)?
ca yat visaratām ṛkṣāṇām āspadam,
ca yat sarvonnātānām (āspadam asti),
tasmin ambare śūnyam iti pratītiḥ adhunā api nāma astam gatā (asti).
ajñarachitam lokāpavādam mārjayitum kaḥ anyaḥ janaḥ kṣamaḥ (asti)?
9.
Where the multitude of abodes of numerous gods and demons have become known as stars, and which is the dwelling place of the wandering constellations and all the highest celestial bodies - in that very sky, the notion of it being 'empty' has now truly vanished. What other person is capable of wiping away such public slander created by the ignorant?
मेघाटोपैः प्रलयदहनैरद्रिपक्षाभिघातैस्तारापूरैरमरदितिजक्षुब्धसंग्रामसंघैः ।
व्योमाद्यापि प्रकृतिविकृतिं नाम नायात्यसंख्यैरन्तः साराशयगुणवतां लक्ष्यते नो महिम्नः ॥ १० ॥
व्योमाद्यापि प्रकृतिविकृतिं नाम नायात्यसंख्यैरन्तः साराशयगुणवतां लक्ष्यते नो महिम्नः ॥ १० ॥
meghāṭopaiḥ pralayadahanairadripakṣābhighātaistārāpūrairamaraditijakṣubdhasaṃgrāmasaṃghaiḥ ,
vyomādyāpi prakṛtivikṛtiṃ nāma nāyātyasaṃkhyairantaḥ sārāśayaguṇavatāṃ lakṣyate no mahimnaḥ 10
vyomādyāpi prakṛtivikṛtiṃ nāma nāyātyasaṃkhyairantaḥ sārāśayaguṇavatāṃ lakṣyate no mahimnaḥ 10

meghāṭopaiḥ pralayadahanaiḥ adripakṣābhighātaiḥ
tārāpūraiḥ amaraditijakṣubdhasaṅgrāmasaṅghaiḥ
vyoma adya api prakṛtivikṛtim nāma na āyāti asaṅkhyaiḥ
antaḥsārāśayaguṇavatām lakṣyate na u mahimnaḥ
tārāpūraiḥ amaraditijakṣubdhasaṅgrāmasaṅghaiḥ
vyoma adya api prakṛtivikṛtim nāma na āyāti asaṅkhyaiḥ
antaḥsārāśayaguṇavatām lakṣyate na u mahimnaḥ
10.
(vyoma) asaṅkhyaiḥ meghāṭopaiḥ,
pralayadahanaiḥ,
adripakṣābhighātaiḥ,
tārāpūraiḥ,
ca amaraditijakṣubdhasaṅgrāmasaṅghaiḥ (upadravaiḥ api),
adya api prakṛtivikṛtim nāma na āyāti.
(kintu) antaḥsārāśayaguṇavatām (janaiḥ) mahimnaḥ na u lakṣyate.
pralayadahanaiḥ,
adripakṣābhighātaiḥ,
tārāpūraiḥ,
ca amaraditijakṣubdhasaṅgrāmasaṅghaiḥ (upadravaiḥ api),
adya api prakṛtivikṛtim nāma na āyāti.
(kintu) antaḥsārāśayaguṇavatām (janaiḥ) mahimnaḥ na u lakṣyate.
10.
Despite countless [assaults] from masses of clouds, fires of dissolution, impacts from the wings of mountains, floods of stars, and the agitated conflicts of gods and demons, the sky (vyoman) even today truly undergoes no fundamental alteration (vikṛti) from its intrinsic nature (prakṛti). Yet, this greatness (mahiman) is not truly perceived by those who lack inner essence, intention, and good qualities.
आन्दोलयस्यविरलं गगनार्कमङ्के नारायणं च शशिनं च तथेतराणि ।
तेजांसि भासुरतडित्प्रभृतीनि साधो चित्रं तथापि न जहासि यदान्ध्यमन्तः ॥ ११ ॥

āndolayasyaviralaṃ gaganārkamaṅke nārāyaṇaṃ ca śaśinaṃ ca tathetarāṇi ,
tejāṃsi bhāsurataḍitprabhṛtīni sādho citraṃ tathāpi na jahāsi yadāndhyamantaḥ 11
tejāṃsi bhāsurataḍitprabhṛtīni sādho citraṃ tathāpi na jahāsi yadāndhyamantaḥ 11

āndolayasi aviralam gagana-arkam aṅke
nārāyaṇam ca śaśinam ca tathā itarāṇi
tejāṃsi bhāsurataḍitprabhṛtīni sādho citram
tathā api na jahāsi yat āndhyam antaḥ
nārāyaṇam ca śaśinam ca tathā itarāṇi
tejāṃsi bhāsurataḍitprabhṛtīni sādho citram
tathā api na jahāsi yat āndhyam antaḥ

sādho! (tvam) aviralam gagana-arkam,
ca nārāyaṇam,
ca śaśinam,
tathā bhāsurataḍitprabhṛtīni itarāṇi tejāṃsi aṅke āndolayasi.
yat tathā api antaḥ āndhyam na jahāsi,
(tat) citram (asti).
ca nārāyaṇam,
ca śaśinam,
tathā bhāsurataḍitprabhṛtīni itarāṇi tejāṃsi aṅke āndolayasi.
yat tathā api antaḥ āndhyam na jahāsi,
(tat) citram (asti).
11.
O wise one! You ceaselessly swing the sun and Nārāyaṇa, the moon, and other radiant luminaries like lightning in your lap within the sky. It is truly astonishing that even with such grandeur, you still do not abandon the inner blindness.
आकाश काशसि तु यत्र शशाङ्कबिम्बं त्वत्कीर्णकज्जलतमो मलिनोऽसितत्वम् ।
सङ्गान्न यन्नयसि तत्खलु चित्रमुच्चैः को नाम वान्तरमलं मलिनीकरोति ॥ १२ ॥

ākāśa kāśasi tu yatra śaśāṅkabimbaṃ tvatkīrṇakajjalatamo malino'sitatvam ,
saṅgānna yannayasi tatkhalu citramuccaiḥ ko nāma vāntaramalaṃ malinīkaroti 12

ākāśa kāśasi tu yatra śaśāṅkabimbam
tvat-kīrṇa-kajjalatamaḥ malinaḥ asitatvam
saṅgāt na yat nayasi tat khalu citram uccaiḥ
kaḥ nāma vā antaram malam malinīkaroti
tvat-kīrṇa-kajjalatamaḥ malinaḥ asitatvam
saṅgāt na yat nayasi tat khalu citram uccaiḥ
kaḥ nāma vā antaram malam malinīkaroti
12.
ākāśa! yatra śaśāṅkabimbam (asti),
tatra tu (tvam) kāśasi.
yat tvat-kīrṇa-kajjalatamaḥ malinaḥ asitatvam (asti,
tat tvam) saṅgāt na nayasi,
tat khalu uccaiḥ citram (asti).
kaḥ nāma vā antaram malam malinīkaroti?
tatra tu (tvam) kāśasi.
yat tvat-kīrṇa-kajjalatamaḥ malinaḥ asitatvam (asti,
tat tvam) saṅgāt na nayasi,
tat khalu uccaiḥ citram (asti).
kaḥ nāma vā antaram malam malinīkaroti?
12.
O Sky! You shine where the moon's orb is, yet that darkness of yours, scattered like lamp-black and a dirty blackness, you do not dispel by your very presence and connection (with the moon's light) - this is truly a great wonder! For who, indeed, can defile an already inherent inner impurity (or, make an inner blemish dirtier)?
पूर्णस्यापि जगद्दोषैः सर्वदैवाविकारिणः ।
खस्य मन्ये बुधस्येव सुखं सर्वार्थशून्यता ॥ १३ ॥

pūrṇasyāpi jagaddoṣaiḥ sarvadaivāvikāriṇaḥ ,

pūrṇasya api jagat doṣaiḥ sarvadā eva avikāriṇaḥ |
khasya manye budhasya iva sukham sarva-artha-śūnyatā ||

I believe that for space (kha), which is always full and remains unaffected by the world's imperfections, its happiness, like that of a wise person, is its emptiness of all objectives.
कल्पाभ्रद्रुमवीरुदुन्नतिदृशां कर्तासि धर्तासि च आकाशेन्दुघनार्ककिन्नरमरुत्स्कन्धामराणामपि ।
सर्वं रम्यमसंकुलाशय समस्वच्छस्वभावस्य ते यत्त्वेतद्दहनत्वमङ्ग तदहो मुख्याय खेदाय नः ॥ १४ ॥
सर्वं रम्यमसंकुलाशय समस्वच्छस्वभावस्य ते यत्त्वेतद्दहनत्वमङ्ग तदहो मुख्याय खेदाय नः ॥ १४ ॥
kalpābhradrumavīrudunnatidṛśāṃ kartāsi dhartāsi ca ākāśendughanārkakinnaramarutskandhāmarāṇāmapi ,
sarvaṃ ramyamasaṃkulāśaya samasvacchasvabhāvasya te yattvetaddahanatvamaṅga tadaho mukhyāya khedāya naḥ 14
sarvaṃ ramyamasaṃkulāśaya samasvacchasvabhāvasya te yattvetaddahanatvamaṅga tadaho mukhyāya khedāya naḥ 14

kalpa-abhra-druma-vīrud-unnati-dṛśām kartā asi dhartā asi ca
ākāśa-indu-ghana-arka-kinnara-marut-skandha-amarāṇām api

You are the creator and sustainer of those who observe the growth of cosmic clouds, trees, and creepers. You are also the creator and sustainer of space (ākāśa), the moon, clouds, the sun, kinnaras, groups of winds, and gods. O you whose intention (āśaya) is undisturbed and whose intrinsic nature (svabhāva) is uniformly pure – everything about you is delightful. But alas, dear one, this burning nature of yours is truly a cause for our great sorrow.
आकाश काशमसि निर्मलमच्छमुच्चैराधार उन्नततयोत्तममुत्तमानाम् ।
त्वामेत्य किंतु विरलं करकाघनोऽयं लोकं विमर्दयति तेन परोऽसि नीचैः ॥ १५ ॥

O space (ākāśa), you are luminous, pure, clear, a high support, and supremely excellent among the excellent due to your exalted nature. Yet, this hail-cloud, reaching you, sometimes devastates the world. Therefore, you are truly superior to what is base.
आकाश कर्षकष एव निकर्षणं ते मन्ये चिरं समचितं न तु किंचिदन्यत् ।
शून्योऽसि यज्जलधरर्क्षविमानचन्द्रसूर्यानिलान्वहसि भासि न चार्थशून्यः ॥ १६ ॥

ākāśa! te nikarṣaṇam ciram sama-citam karṣa-kaṣa eva manye,

[tathāpi tvam] jala-dhara-ṛkṣa-vimāna-candra-sūrya-anilān vahasi,
bhāsi ca.
na ca artha-śūnyaḥ.

O space (ākāśa), I consider your long-term degradation to be merely a constant, uniform attrition, and nothing else. Though you are empty, you carry clouds, stars, celestial chariots, the moon, the sun, and winds, and you shine, proving that you are not devoid of purpose (artha).
अह्नि प्रकाशमसि रक्तवपुर्दिनान्ते यामासु कृष्णमथ चाखिलवस्तुरिक्तम् ।
नित्यं न किंचिदपि सद्वहसीति मायां न व्योम वेत्ति विदुषोऽपि विचेष्टितं ते ॥ १७ ॥

During the day, you are luminous and red-bodied, and at day's end, you become dark throughout the watches of the night, completely devoid of all things. You continually bear nothing that truly exists; therefore, not even space (vyoma) comprehends your illusion (māyā) or the subtle actions of even a wise person.
अकिंचनोऽपि कार्याणि साधयत्यातताशयः ।
अन्तःशून्यमपि व्योम सर्वस्योन्नतिकारणम् ॥ १८ ॥

Even a person who possesses nothing, if resolute and firm in their intention, achieves their goals. Similarly, even space (vyoma), though empty within, is the cause of elevation for all.

तदपि गगनाध्वानं सूर्यः प्रयाति दिने दिने विषममपि यत्प्रारब्धं तत्त्यजन्ति न सात्त्विकाः ॥ १९ ॥

There is neither grass nor water, no village, not even a named city, no tree providing dense, cooling shade, nor any excellent public water-pavilion (prapā) along its path. Yet, the sun travels its celestial route day after day. Similarly, those of a pure (sāttvika) disposition do not abandon what they have undertaken (prārabdha), even if it is arduous.
यामा ध्वान्तपटेन शीतलरुचिः कर्पूरपूरैः करैरर्कालोकनवांशुकेन दिवसस्तारौघपुष्पोत्करैः ।

The watches of the night adorn the celestial expanse with a curtain of darkness. The cool-rayed moon (śītalaruciḥ) enriches it with abundant camphor-like rays. The day (divasaḥ) embellishes it with a fresh garment for viewing the sun. The sky (dyauḥ) graces it with masses of star-flowers. All seasons (sarvartavaḥ) bedeck it with clouds, frost, water, and various blossoms. In this manner, these entities beautify the courtyard of space (vyomāṅgaṇam) in the three worlds (tribhuvane) for the two masters (nāthayoḥ), whose very essence is Time and its constituent divisions (kālakalātmanoḥ).
धूमाभ्ररेणुतिमिरार्कनिशेशसंध्या ताराविमानगरुडाद्रिसुरासुराणाम् ।
क्षोभैरपि प्रकृतिमुज्झति नान्तरिक्षं चित्रोत्थिता स्थितिरहो नु महाशयस्य ॥ २१ ॥

Even by the agitations of smoke, clouds, dust, darkness, the sun, moon, twilight, stars, celestial vehicles, Garudas, mountains, gods, and demons, the sky does not abandon its intrinsic nature (prakṛti). Oh, indeed, how wonderfully steadfast is the disposition of a great-souled one!

This upper space (antarikṣa), bound by the walls of the directions, and the surface of the earth (urvī-tala), which serves as a vast repository of dense cities and mountains, adorned by hosts of Vidyādharas, gods, and great serpents, and teeming with swarms of ants representing the multitude of traversing beings (saṃsāra).
कालः क्रिया च भुवनं भवनं चिराय नामाधितिष्ठत इवोपवनं विकासि ।
आशङ्क्यते प्रतिदिनं ननु नष्टमेव नाद्यापि नश्यति च केयमहो नु माया ॥ २३ ॥

Time, action, the world, and its dwelling place, indeed, persist for a long time like an expanding garden. It is feared daily that it is destroyed, yet it is not destroyed even today. Oh, what indeed is this (cosmic) illusion (māyā)!

I believe the sky (kha) restricts the excessive height of trees and similar things. Yet, doership (kartṛtā) arises from the greatness (mahiman) of the great non-doer (akartṛ).
जगतां यत्र लक्षाणि न भवन्त्युद्भवन्ति च ।
तच्छून्यमुच्यते व्योम धिक्पाण्डित्यमखण्डितम ॥ २५ ॥

Where millions of worlds neither originate nor truly exist, that void is called space (vyoma). Shame on such uninterrupted scholarship!
व्योमन्येव प्रलीयन्ते व्योमतः प्रोद्भवन्ति च ।
गच्छतोन्मत्ततामेतामीश्वरान्यभिदा कृता ॥ २६ ॥

They dissolve within space (vyoma) itself, and from space they arise. Such a distinction (abhidā) of another (entity) from God (īśvara) is created by one who falls into this madness.
आयान्ति यान्ति निपतन्ति तथोत्पतन्ति सर्गश्रियः कणघटा इव पावकोत्थाः ।
यत्रामलं तदहमेकमनादिमध्यं मन्ये खमेव न तु कारणमीश्वराख्यम् ॥ २७ ॥

The glories of creation (sargaśriyaḥ) come, go, fall, and rise, just like collections of sparks (kaṇaghaṭāḥ) rising from fire (pāvaka). That pure, singular reality, which has neither beginning nor middle, I consider to be space (vyoma) itself, and not the cause called God (īśvara).

Space (vyoma) itself, which is the most expansive support for the jewels of the three worlds, bears within its own nature (aṅge) all immeasurable and undivided objects. I, whose form is consciousness (cit), indeed consider that to be the Supreme (param), in which this worldly illusion (jagadbhrama) undergoes both its arising and dissolution.

In the forest regions, amidst charming groves of trees, a song is sung by a beautiful, longing forest-dweller. From here, on the mountain peak, that song is observed by a man suffering from separation (viyogin) as he moves along his path, filled with emotion (rasa).

A song is sung, with sighs and yearning (sotkaṇṭhayā), in a voice choked with emotion (kaṇṭhāśliṣṭa-girā), by a Vidyadhara woman devastated by separation (viyoga-hatā), from the high tender leaves of a tree on a mountain peak. Listening to that very song, which here addresses a 'lord' (nāma atra), this traveler (pathika), sighing deeply, his mind wavering as if by the swaying of a swing, neither moves forward nor can be made to proceed.

From the cup of leaves on a tree at the mountain summit, this Vidyadhari woman, distressed by separation (viyoga-vidhurā) and tear-agitated, sings exceedingly sweetly (kākalyā atilakam), sighing: 'O Lord (nātha)! Remembering and savoring your kiss, with my chin held and a smile, as an elixir (rasāyanam) in your embrace-home (utsaṅga-gṛhe), these many unfortunate years have been spent by me!'

Her virtuous husband from a previous existence (prāg-bhava-sat-pati) was cursed by a sage (muni) and turned into a tree. This very woman remains here, counting precisely those twelve years (varṣa-dvādaśakam). Full of longing (utkalitā), she sings, having taken refuge in that very tree, which is her beloved. O King (rājan)! I heard this from the mouths of travelers (mārga-vihāriṇām) on the path.

Look! This Vidyādhara, whose curse has been appeased by our sight, having released the young woman from her tree-like state, now embraces her around the neck with those very arms that deceptively appeared as branches, his smile resembling blossoming flowers.

On this peak, a mass of flowers, found in abundance among mountains and elephants, shines splendidly upon the trees, whose shoots are prominent. It gleams like the playful scattering of stars fallen from the sky and, at the same time, resembles frost.

Oh, behold the Kaveri river! It shines splendidly, its agitated waves, stirred by the eager leaping of swarms of fish, are made rough by the wailing and fluttering ospreys. Its shores and wetlands are thronged with herds of fearless deer, and it appears adorned with a white garment of flowers.

Look! Here on the slope of Mount Suvela, a golden rock shines with a completely pure splendor. It is comparable to particles of the submarine fire scattered by the breaking of the turbulent waves of the ocean (Varuṇa's abode) that crash upon the shore.

I do not believe that the gods (amarāṇām) here experience the same satisfaction (tuṣṭiḥ) that is attained by the people (narāṇām) in the cowherd settlements (gokuleṣu) and mountain caves – those rustic individuals (pāmara) who are intoxicated by the humming, maddened bees concealed within the petals of blooming Kandala flowers.

Why do the playful and restless Kirātas (kirātāḥ) mercilessly kill an innocent deer (mugdhamṛgam) in the mountain caves (girigahvareṣu) as if it were an enemy? This deer has its eyes fixed on the faces of the singing Pulinda women within the forests, which are agitated by bees swinging on creepers.

The villages, situated in the deep mountain ranges, where the bodies of travelers are cooled by the dense leaves of creepers, which are rich with the essence of many blooming flowers, and which are characterized by swift waves due to the wide flow of water, surpass the moon.

The delightful mountain villages, with their murmuring stream waters, where profusely blooming palmyra trees spread widely, whose canopy-like skies are formed by swaying creepers playfully adorned with flowers and young shoots, and where tall Sala trees on their outskirts are graced by hanging clouds, resemble the garden sections of Śaśipura (Moon City), that land which extends as far as the moon and the Ashvattha tree.

The villages are glorious, where multitudes of 'moon-jewel' peacock eye-spots, originating from delicate peacock feather fragments, are scattered and seem to float upwards, having been shed by flocks of peacocks performing vigorous new "tāṇḍava" dances, inspired by the rumbling thunder of dense, dark, approaching clouds.

However, O Cloud, this act of yours - this sequence of joyfully distributing water to trees located in barren ponds and dry lands, even while you are raining - this indeed vexes people's minds.

Any object, even if inherently good, can become unfavorable if it is placed in an inappropriate location. For example, water, having reached a place of dark clouds, itself acquires blackness.

Oh, indeed, the cloud has released water! Oh, indeed, the earth is completely filled with water! Oh, indeed, that which was distressed on the earth, like a yearning lover, is now thoroughly nourished by abundant waters.

Cruelty, instability, impurity, street-wandering, and utter vileness - were these truly acquired by fools from dogs? Or, rather, were they acquired by dogs from fools? I do not know.

उपादेयो भवत्येव शौर्यसंतोषभक्तिभिः ॥ ५५ ॥

Even a person with many faults becomes acceptable to someone, indeed, by just a few qualities, such as courage, contentment, and devotion (bhakti).

He who dedicates himself to the paths of sensory objects, pursuing those who are frenzied, intoxicated, on the verge of falling, rushing, and exceedingly proud - whatever he considers to be the substantial reality of even the desire to merely glance at the tip of a blade of grass, let that be examined: whether it is true existence or merely dullness.

Even among creatures sharing the animal nature, an uproar is tolerated differently by those with agitated minds. It is endured in one way by composed lions, and in another way by dogs.

By the Creator, who constantly makes the entire world remarkably distinct, yet in this dog, his grandson, everything has been created uniformly. His dwelling is in a cave of impure refuse; his food is feces and pus; his disgraceful mating is in the sight of all; and his body is despicable to all.
त्वत्तः कोऽधम इत्युदीरितवते श्वोवाच हासान्वितं

To him who asked, "Who is lower than you?" the dog replied with a laugh: "He who cultivates foolishness, impurity, blindness, and inauspiciousness more than me, he is truly lower. And the glorious qualities (guṇa) like valor, unfeigned devotion (bhakti), and steadfastness (dhṛti) that reside in me - these qualities cannot be obtained from a fool, even when sought with great effort."

This crow eats impure things and constantly delights in the unclean, in a large heap of refuse. It silently devours conscious beings and, taking pleasure, tears apart unconscious ones. When people gather around an agitated female dog, it (the crow) is pelted with stones by them. Indeed, such a mischievous existence in the world was created by the ordainer (Dhātṛ), and not by a god (Īśvara).

This cawing crow, high above the liṅga (phallic symbol), displays its (ātman) self, saying: 'Behold me! I am one who has ascended to a great height despite being guilty of all the most grievous sins!'

O little crow, with your harsh, cawing cry! You wander in the lake, whose virtues are engulfed in mud. You obstruct the humming of bees. Therefore, you are like a burdensome fruit upon my head.
कवलयति नरकनिकरं परिहरति मृणालिकां ध्वाङ्क्षः ।
यदतोऽस्तु मा स्मयस्ते स्वभ्यस्तं सर्वदा स्वदते ॥ ६४ ॥

The crow consumes the multitude of hells (i.e., impure things) but rejects the lotus stalk (i.e., pure things). Since this is so, do not let there be any pride for you, for what is accustomed always brings satisfaction.

Though seen like a swan whose body was white with the pollen of various forest flowers, the crow was (later) recognized devouring a wet mouthful of worms.

How can a crow, whose shoulders are gray with a heap of gleaming rubbish, wander here in a lake made beautiful by eager cranes and the nectar of bursting lotuses?

Oh crow, whose only distinguishing mark is your harsh, saw-like caw! Where has such self-doubt of yours vanished today? Why do you uselessly raise cuckoo offspring, even with the hope of having a single son? This act, indeed, only serves to make you an object of ridicule.

Having seen the crow in the lotus pond, which is supposedly playful but appears like a dark stain, cawing loudly: whoever, despite being distraught and losing all composure from hundreds of cries of "Oh, what a tragedy!", still does not weep, let that person be torn apart by a saw.

O sweet-voiced cuckoo, who here can listen to your sweet and delightful sound, which acts as a messenger of peace (saṃdhi) after a lover's quarrel? For in these thickets, our hearing has been completely drowned out by the cawing and harsh guttural noises of crows and the squabbling of owls.

While a lovely young cuckoo, with its gentle voice and the captivating sincerity that charms all, recounts a delightful tale before those in love, at that very moment, a crow descends from the sky into the garden, crying incessantly with dreadful and terrifying caws, "This one is my son!" and thereby makes everyone utterly joyless.

O cuckoo, why, oh why do you sing with such a rapid sound, exhilarated with joy? Take that sound back into your throat's hollow; may your illusion (bhrama) not last long! This is not the exuberant blossoming of spring (madhu), continuously rich with magnificent flowers. These trees, made dry by winter, stand with masses of frost.

O cuckoo, singing with soft, sweet notes, whose form is always admirable, by whom, alas, have you been taught this sorrow-giving, inauspicious speech? In the month of Caitra, amidst its wondrous new sprouts, a separated woman (virahiṇī) asks, 'Whose is this sweet sound, belonging to my soul?' In response, from a high tree, 'Yours! Yours!' is swiftly uttered by you.
मौनस्पन्दविहारवर्णवपुषां साम्येऽपि काकव्रजेऽकाकः कोकिल एष कान्तिरुचिरो दूरात्परिज्ञायते ।

Even with similarity in silence, movement, behavior, color, and physical form among a flock of crows, this cuckoo, not a crow, beautiful in its radiance, is recognized from afar. Just like a scholar among a multitude of ignorant people, whose actions are noble by his very nature, indeed, everyone attains eminence through the wonder of their corresponding intrinsic nature (svānta).

Brother cuckoo, enough, enough of your calls! Your invaluable quality (guṇa) does not manifest now. Be silent in some hollow, covered by a mass of fallen leaves. This time, my friend, is winter (śiśira), filled with flocks of harshly cawing crows in the caves of magnificent trees; this is not the festival of spring (vasanta).
चित्रं मातरमेष कोकिलशिशुः संत्यज्य काकीं गतः सैषैनं तुदतीति यावदहमप्याचिन्तयामि क्षणम् ।

It is astonishing that this cuckoo chick, having abandoned its own mother, went to a female crow. As I pondered for a moment, thinking, 'Surely, that one (the crow) torments this chick,' then, by its inherently fortunate nature (svabhāva), the chick also quickly clung to her with affection, as if to grow as if with a mother. The very circumstance to which it goes proves to be the source of its greatness.
