इति राजमुखाच्छुत्वा कर्कटी वनमर्कटी ।
अवबुद्धपदान्तं स्वं जहौ मत्सरचापलम् ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having heard this from the king's mouth, Karkaṭī, the forest ogress, understood her own ultimate state and abandoned her envy and fickleness.
अन्तःशीतलतामेत्य विश्रान्तिमपतापताम् ।
प्राप्ता प्रावृण्मयूरीव सज्योत्स्नेव कुमुद्वती ॥ २ ॥
antaḥśītalatāmetya viśrāntimapatāpatām ,
prāptā prāvṛṇmayūrīva sajyotsneva kumudvatī 2
2. antaḥśītalatām etya viśrāntim apatāpatām prāptā
prāvṛṇmayūrī iva sajyotsnā iva kumudvatī
2. (sā) antaḥśītalatām viśrāntim apatāpatām etya
prāptā prāvṛṇmayūrī iva sajyotsnā kumudvatī iva
2. She attained inner coolness, rest, and freedom from distress, like a peacock in the rainy season or a lotus pond (kumudvatī) with moonlight.
तथा राजगिरा तस्या आनन्द उदभूद्भृशम् ।
गर्भेऽन्तः खे बलाकाया रवेणेव पयोमुचः ॥ ३ ॥
tathā rājagirā tasyā ānanda udabhūdbhṛśam ,
garbhe'ntaḥ khe balākāyā raveṇeva payomucaḥ 3
3. tathā rājagirā tasyāḥ ānandaḥ udabhūt bhṛśam
garbhe antaḥ khe balākāyāḥ raveṇa iva payomucaḥ
3. tathā rājagirā tasyāḥ ānandaḥ bhṛśam udabhūt,
balākāyāḥ garbhe antaḥ khe payomucaḥ raveṇa iva (udabhūt)
3. Similarly, from the king's words, great joy arose in her, like the rumble from a rain cloud (payomuc) within the inner expanse (garbhe antaḥ khe) of a crane-like cloud (balākā).
राक्षस्युवाच ।
अहो बत पवित्रेयं भवतोर्भाति शेमुषी ।
अनस्तमितसारेण प्रबोधार्केण भासिता ॥ ४ ॥
rākṣasyuvāca ,
aho bata pavitreyaṃ bhavatorbhāti śemuṣī ,
anastamitasāreṇa prabodhārkeṇa bhāsitā 4
4. rākṣasī uvāca aho bata pavitrā iyam bhavatoḥ bhāti
śemuṣī anastamitasāreṇa prabodhārkeṇa bhāsitā
4. rākṣasī uvāca aho bata iyam bhavatoḥ pavitrā śemuṣī
anastamitasāreṇa prabodhārkeṇa bhāsitā bhāti
4. The ogress said: "Oh, indeed! Your intellect (śemuṣī) shines, so pure, illuminated by the sun of awakening (prabodha) whose essence never sets."
शीता समरसा शुद्धा ज्योत्स्नेव शशिमण्डलात् ।
विवेककणिकां श्रुत्वा भवतो हृदयादियम् ॥ ५ ॥
śītā samarasā śuddhā jyotsneva śaśimaṇḍalāt ,
vivekakaṇikāṃ śrutvā bhavato hṛdayādiyam 5
5. śītā samarasā śuddhā jyotsnā iva śaśimaṇḍalāt
vivekakaṇikām śrutvā bhavataḥ hṛdayāt iyam
5. bhavataḥ hṛdayāt śrutvā iyam vivekakaṇikām
śītā samarasā śuddhā śaśimaṇḍalāt jyotsnā iva
5. This particle of discernment, having been heard from your heart, is cool, equanimous, and pure, just like moonlight from the moon's disk.
विवेकिनो जगत्पूज्याः सेव्या मन्ये भवादृशाः ।
सत्सङ्गात्सविकासास्मि चन्द्रेणेव कुमुद्वती ॥ ६ ॥
vivekino jagatpūjyāḥ sevyā manye bhavādṛśāḥ ,
satsaṅgātsavikāsāsmi candreṇeva kumudvatī 6
6. vivekinaḥ jagatpūjyāḥ sevyāḥ manye bhavādṛśāḥ
satsaṅgāt savikāsā asmi candreṇa iva kumudvatī
6. manye bhavādṛśāḥ vivekinaḥ jagatpūjyāḥ sevyāḥ
satsaṅgāt candreṇa iva kumudvatī asmi savikāsā
6. I consider those like you, discerning and revered by the world, to be worthy of honor. Through the company of the wise (satsaṅga), I blossom, just as a night-lotus flourishes by the moon.
सौरभं कुसुमासङ्गादेव सत्सङ्गमाच्छुभम् ।
वर्तते ह्यर्कसंपर्काद्विकासोऽम्बुरुहामिव ॥ ७ ॥
saurabhaṃ kusumāsaṅgādeva satsaṅgamācchubham ,
vartate hyarkasaṃparkādvikāso'mburuhāmiva 7
7. saurabham kusumāsaṅgāt eva satsaṅgamāt śubham
vartate hi arkasaṃparkāt vikāsaḥ amburuhām iva
7. kusumāsaṅgāt eva saurabham vartate hi satsaṅgamāt śubham
(vartate hi) arkasaṃparkāt amburuhām iva vikāsaḥ (vartate hi)
7. Just as fragrance arises precisely from the association with flowers, so too auspiciousness comes from the company of the wise (satsaṅga). Indeed, blossoming occurs from contact with the sun, similar to that of lotuses.
महतामेव संपर्कात्पुनर्दुःखं न बाधते ।
को हि दीपशिखाहस्तस्तमसा परिभूयते ॥ ८ ॥
mahatāmeva saṃparkātpunarduḥkhaṃ na bādhate ,
ko hi dīpaśikhāhastastamasā paribhūyate 8
8. mahatām eva saṃparkāt punar duḥkham na bādhate
kaḥ hi dīpaśikhāhastaḥ tamasā paribhūyate
8. mahatām eva saṃparkāt punar duḥkham na bādhate.
hi,
kaḥ dīpaśikhāhastaḥ tamasā paribhūyate?
8. Through the association with truly great individuals, suffering (duḥkha) does not afflict one again. Indeed, who, holding a lamp-flame in their hand, is ever overcome by darkness?
मयेमौ जङ्गलप्राप्तौ भवन्तौ भूमिभास्करौ ।
पूजनीयावतः शीघ्रमीहितं कथ्यतां शुभम् ॥ ९ ॥
mayemau jaṅgalaprāptau bhavantau bhūmibhāskarau ,
pūjanīyāvataḥ śīghramīhitaṃ kathyatāṃ śubham 9
9. mayā imau jaṅgalaprāptau bhavantau bhūmibhāskarau
pūjanīyau ataḥ śīghram īhitam kathyatām śubham
9. bhavantau bhūmibhāskarau jaṅgalaprāptau ataḥ
mayā pūjanīyau śīghram śubham īhitam kathyatām
9. Since you two, who are like suns on earth, have arrived in this forest, you are therefore worthy of veneration. Quickly tell me your auspicious wish.
राजोवाच ।
अस्मिन् जनपदे रक्षःकुलकाननमञ्जरि ।
जनस्य बाधतेऽत्यन्तं सदा हृदयशूलनम् ॥ १० ॥
rājovāca ,
asmin janapade rakṣaḥkulakānanamañjari ,
janasya bādhate'tyantaṃ sadā hṛdayaśūlanam 10
10. rājā uvāca asmin janapade rakṣaḥkulakānanamñjari
janasya bādhate atyantam sadā hṛdayaśūlanam
10. rājā uvāca asmin janapade rakṣaḥkulakānanamñjari
janasya hṛdayaśūlanam atyantam sadā bādhate
10. The king spoke: 'In this region, a sprout from the forest-like family of rakṣas (demons) constantly afflicts the people with an extreme, heart-piercing pain.'
यतः सर्वैव जनता तप्ता दृढविषूचिका ।
मण्डले ननु तेनाहं निर्गतो रात्रिचर्यया ॥ ११ ॥
yataḥ sarvaiva janatā taptā dṛḍhaviṣūcikā ,
maṇḍale nanu tenāhaṃ nirgato rātricaryayā 11
11. yataḥ sarvā eva janatā taptā dṛḍhaviṣūcikā
maṇḍale nanu tena aham nirgataḥ rātrīcaryayā
11. yataḥ maṇḍale sarvā eva janatā dṛḍhaviṣūcikā
taptā nanu tena aham rātrīcaryayā nirgataḥ
11. Since the entire populace in this region is severely afflicted by cholera, I have indeed set out on a nocturnal mission (rātrīcaryā).
शूलादि हृदये नृणां न शाम्यति यदौषधैः ।
ततोऽहं त्वद्विधप्रोक्तमन्त्रार्थेन विनिर्गतः ॥ १२ ॥
śūlādi hṛdaye nṛṇāṃ na śāmyati yadauṣadhaiḥ ,
tato'haṃ tvadvidhaproktamantrārthena vinirgataḥ 12
12. śūla ādi hṛdaye nṛṇām na śāmyati yat auṣadhaiḥ
tataḥ aham tvadvidhaproktamantrārthena vinirgataḥ
12. yat nṛṇām hṛdaye śūla ādi auṣadhaiḥ na śāmyati
tataḥ aham tvadvidhaproktamantrārthena vinirgataḥ
12. Since the piercing pain and other ailments in people's hearts do not subside with medicines, I have therefore set out for the sake of a sacred utterance (mantra) - its import (artha) - as expounded by someone of your kind (tvadvidha).
त्वादृशस्य च लोकस्य मुग्धलोकाभिघातिनः ।
निग्रहार्थं प्रवृत्तिर्मे सा च संपत्तिमेत्यलम् ॥ १३ ॥
tvādṛśasya ca lokasya mugdhalokābhighātinaḥ ,
nigrahārthaṃ pravṛttirme sā ca saṃpattimetyalam 13
13. tvādṛśasya ca lokasya mugdhalokābhighātinaḥ
nigrahārtham pravṛttiḥ me sā ca saṃpattim eti alam
13. mugdhalokābhighātinaḥ tvādṛśasya lokasya ca
nigrahārtham me pravṛttiḥ sā ca alam saṃpattim eti
13. My undertaking is for the purpose of restraining a person like you, who harms innocent people, and that undertaking will achieve great success.
एतावदेव च शुभे त्वयाङ्गीक्रियतां वचः ।
भूयो भवत्या प्राणा हि हिंसनीया न कस्यचित् ॥ १४ ॥
etāvadeva ca śubhe tvayāṅgīkriyatāṃ vacaḥ ,
bhūyo bhavatyā prāṇā hi hiṃsanīyā na kasyacit 14
14. etāvat eva ca śubhe tvayā aṅgīkriyatām vacaḥ
bhūyaḥ bhavatyā prāṇāḥ hi hiṃsanīyāḥ na kasyacit
14. śubhe ca etāvat eva vacaḥ tvayā aṅgīkriyatām
bhūyaḥ bhavatyā kasyacit prāṇāḥ hi na hiṃsanīyāḥ
14. And, O auspicious one, let only this much word be accepted by you: that hereafter no one's lives (prāṇa) are to be harmed by you.
राक्षस्युवाच ।
बाढमेवं करोम्यद्यप्रभृत्यवितथं प्रभो ।
सत्यमेव न किंचिद्धि हिंसनीयं मयाधुना ॥ १५ ॥
rākṣasyuvāca ,
bāḍhamevaṃ karomyadyaprabhṛtyavitathaṃ prabho ,
satyameva na kiṃciddhi hiṃsanīyaṃ mayādhunā 15
15. rākṣasī uvāca bāḍham evam karomi adyaprabhṛti avitatham
prabho satyam eva na kiṃcit hi hiṃsanīyam mayā adhunā
15. rākṣasī uvāca prabho,
bāḍham avitatham evam adyaprabhṛti karomi satyam eva hi adhunā mayā kiṃcit na hiṃsanīyam
15. The female demon said: "Certainly, O Lord, from today onwards I shall truly do so. Indeed, now nothing at all is to be harmed by me."
राजोवाच ।
यद्येवं फुल्लपद्माक्षि परदेहैकभोजने ।
किं स्याच्छरीरवृत्त्यै ते स्थिताया मत्समीहिते ॥ १६ ॥
rājovāca ,
yadyevaṃ phullapadmākṣi paradehaikabhojane ,
kiṃ syāccharīravṛttyai te sthitāyā matsamīhite 16
16. rājan uvāca yadi evam phullapadmākṣi paradehaikabhojane
kim syāt śarīravṛttyai te sthitāyā matsamīhite
16. rājan uvāca phullapadmākṣi paradehaikabhojane,
yadi evam,
matsamīhite sthitāyāḥ te śarīravṛttyai kim syāt
16. The king said: "If this is so, O lotus-eyed one, O one whose sole food is the bodies of others, what would be the means for the maintenance of your body, as you remain in the way I desire?"
राक्षस्युवाच ।
षड्भिर्मासैर्गिरौ राजन्प्रबुद्धायाः समाधितः ।
जाता भोजनसंकल्पाद्भोजनेच्छेयमद्य मे ॥ १७ ॥
rākṣasyuvāca ,
ṣaḍbhirmāsairgirau rājanprabuddhāyāḥ samādhitaḥ ,
jātā bhojanasaṃkalpādbhojaneccheyamadya me 17
17. rākṣasī uvāca ṣaḍbhiḥ māsaiḥ girau rājan prabuddhāyāḥ
samādhitaḥ jātā bhojana-saṅkalpāt bhojana-icchā iyam adya me
17. rājan rākṣasī uvāca ṣaḍbhiḥ māsaiḥ girau samādhitaḥ
prabuddhāyāḥ me adya bhojana-saṅkalpāt iyam bhojana-icchā jātā
17. The Rākṣasī said: "O King, after six months, having awakened from my deep meditation (dhyāna) on this mountain, a desire for food has arisen in me today, born from the thought of eating."
इदानीं शिखरं गत्वा तदेव ध्याननिश्चला ।
यावदिच्छं सुखेनासे सजीवा शालभञ्जिका ॥ १८ ॥
idānīṃ śikharaṃ gatvā tadeva dhyānaniścalā ,
yāvadicchaṃ sukhenāse sajīvā śālabhañjikā 18
18. idānīm śikharam gatvā tat eva dhyāna-niścalā
yāvat iccham sukhena āse sajīvā śālabhañjikā
18. (aham) idānīm śikharam gatvā tat eva dhyāna-niścalā
sajīvā śālabhañjikā (iva) yāvat iccham sukhena āse
18. “Now, having gone to that very peak, firm in my meditation (dhyāna), I shall comfortably remain like an animated statue (śālabhañjikā) for as long as I wish.”
आमृतीं धारणां बद्ध्वा धारयामि शरीरकम् ।
यथेच्छमथ कालेन त्यक्ष्यामीति मतिर्मम ॥ १९ ॥
āmṛtīṃ dhāraṇāṃ baddhvā dhārayāmi śarīrakam ,
yathecchamatha kālena tyakṣyāmīti matirmama 19
19. ā-mṛtim dhāraṇām baddhvā dhārayāmi śarīrakam
yathā iccham atha kālena tyakṣyāmi iti matiḥ mama
19. (aham) ā-mṛtim dhāraṇām baddhvā yathā iccham śarīrakam
dhārayāmi atha kālena tyakṣyāmi iti mama matiḥ (asti)
19. “Having fixed my concentration (dhāraṇā) until death, I will sustain this body as long as I wish, and then, in due course, I will abandon it – this is my intention.”
आशरीरपरित्यागमिदानीं न मया नृप ।
हिंसनीयाः परप्राणास्तेनेदं मद्वचः शृणु ॥ २० ॥
āśarīraparityāgamidānīṃ na mayā nṛpa ,
hiṃsanīyāḥ paraprāṇāstenedaṃ madvacaḥ śṛṇu 20
20. ā-śarīra-parityāgam idānīm na mayā nṛpa
hiṃsanīyāḥ para-prāṇāḥ tena idam mat-vacaḥ śṛṇu
20. nṛpa ā-śarīra-parityāgam idānīm mayā para-prāṇāḥ
na hiṃsanīyāḥ tena idam mat-vacaḥ śṛṇu
20. “O King, until I abandon this body, the lives of others should not be harmed by me. Therefore, listen to these words of mine.”
हिमवान्नाम शैलोऽस्ति शरच्चन्द्रांशुनिर्मलः ।
य उत्तराशाहृदये स्पृष्टपूर्वापरार्णवः ॥ २१ ॥
himavānnāma śailo'sti śaraccandrāṃśunirmalaḥ ,
ya uttarāśāhṛdaye spṛṣṭapūrvāparārṇavaḥ 21
21. himavān nāma śailaḥ asti śaraccandrāṃśunirmalaḥ
yaḥ uttarāśāhṛdaye spṛṣṭapūrvāparārṇavaḥ
21. himavān nāma śailaḥ asti yaḥ śaraccandrāṃśunirmalaḥ
yaḥ uttarāśāhṛdaye spṛṣṭapūrvāparārṇavaḥ
21. There is a mountain named Himavān (Himālaya), as pure as the rays of the autumn moon. It lies in the heart of the northern direction, touching both the eastern and western oceans.
तत्राहं निवसाम्यग्रे हेमशृङ्गदरीगृहे ।
आयसी मेघलेखेव कर्कटीनाम राक्षसी ॥ २२ ॥
tatrāhaṃ nivasāmyagre hemaśṛṅgadarīgṛhe ,
āyasī meghalekheva karkaṭīnāma rākṣasī 22
22. tatra aham nivasāmi agre hemaśṛṅgadarīgṛhe
āyasī meghalekhā iva karkaṭī nāma rākṣasī
22. aham karkaṭī nāma rākṣasī āyasī meghalekhā
iva tatra agre hemaśṛṅgadarīgṛhe nivasāmi
22. There, I - a female demon (rākṣasī) named Karkaṭī, who resembles an iron streak of cloud - reside in a cave-dwelling at the base of a golden peak.
तपसोपार्जितो ब्रह्मा जनतामारणेच्छया ।
विषूचिका प्राणहरा स्यां सूच्यात्मेति भो मया ॥ २३ ॥
tapasopārjito brahmā janatāmāraṇecchayā ,
viṣūcikā prāṇaharā syāṃ sūcyātmeti bho mayā 23
23. tapasā upārjitaḥ brahmā janatāmāraṇecchayā
viṣūcikā prāṇaharā syām sūcyātmā iti bho mayā
23. mayā tapasā brahmā upārjitaḥ janatāmāraṇecchayā
bho iti viṣūcikā prāṇaharā sūcyātmā syām
23. By my severe austerity (tapas), Brahmā was propitiated. With the intention of causing the death of people, I then declared, "Oh! May I become a life-destroying cholera (viṣūcikā) with a subtle, needle-like nature (sūcyātmā)!"
तस्मात्संप्राप्तवरया बहून्वर्षगणान्मया ।
भुक्ता विषूचिकात्वेन जनता जीवबाधनैः ॥ २४ ॥
tasmātsaṃprāptavarayā bahūnvarṣagaṇānmayā ,
bhuktā viṣūcikātvena janatā jīvabādhanaiḥ 24
24. tasmāt samprāptavarayā bahūn varṣagaṇān mayā
bhuktā viṣūcikātvena janatā jīvabādhanaiḥ
24. tasmāt samprāptavarayā mayā bahūn varṣagaṇān
janatā viṣūcikātvena jīvabādhanaiḥ bhuktā
24. Therefore, having obtained that boon, I, for many years, afflicted people, tormenting their lives in the form of cholera (viṣūcikā).
त्वया न गुणिनो हिंस्या इति मे ब्रह्मणा ततः ।
नियमार्थं महामन्त्रस्तदायत्तास्मि संस्थिता ॥ २५ ॥
tvayā na guṇino hiṃsyā iti me brahmaṇā tataḥ ,
niyamārthaṃ mahāmantrastadāyattāsmi saṃsthitā 25
25. tvayā na guṇinaḥ hiṃsyāḥ iti me brahmaṇā tataḥ
niyamārtham mahāmantraḥ tadāyattā asmi saṃsthitā
25. brahmaṇā me tvayā guṇinaḥ na hiṃsyāḥ iti niyamārtham
mahāmantraḥ (dattaḥ ca) tataḥ (aham) tadāyattā asmi saṃsthitā
25. Thus, 'the virtuous should not be harmed by you' – this great mantra for regulation was [given] to me by Brahmā. Therefore, I am established, dependent on that.
सोऽयं प्रगृह्यतां तेन सर्वं हृदयशूलनम् ।
शममेष्यति लोकेऽस्मात्का कथा मत्कृते भ्रमे ॥ २६ ॥
so'yaṃ pragṛhyatāṃ tena sarvaṃ hṛdayaśūlanam ,
śamameṣyati loke'smātkā kathā matkṛte bhrame 26
26. saḥ ayam pragṛhyatām tena sarvam hṛdayaśūlanam
śamam eṣyati loke asmāt kā kathā matkṛte bhrame
26. tena saḥ ayam pragṛhyatām; sarvam hṛdayaśūlanam śamam
eṣyati; asmāt loke matkṛte bhrame kā kathā (bhavati)?
26. Let this (mantra) be accepted by him. All heart-piercing pain will subside. From this (acceptance of the mantra), what need is there for discussion in the world regarding the confusion (saṃsāra) caused by me?
विततैवास्मि हिंसायां यत्पुरा हिंसितं मया ।
जनस्य हृदयं तेन नाड्यो वैधुर्यमागताः ॥ २७ ॥
vitataivāsmi hiṃsāyāṃ yatpurā hiṃsitaṃ mayā ,
janasya hṛdayaṃ tena nāḍyo vaidhuryamāgatāḥ 27
27. vitatā eva asmi hiṃsāyām yat purā hiṃsitam mayā
janasya hṛdayam tena nāḍyaḥ vaidhuryam āgatāḥ
27. yat purā mayā hiṃsitam (āsīt),
(tena) aham hiṃsāyām vitatā eva asmi; tena janasya hṛdayam (ca) nāḍyaḥ vaidhuryam āgatāḥ.
27. I am indeed pervasive in violence, because previously, harm was inflicted by me. Due to that, the heart of the people and their vital channels (nāḍīs) fell into distress.
हिंसित्वा रक्तमांसानि संत्यक्ता ये महाजनाः ।
तेभ्यो विधुरनाडीभ्यो ये जातास्तेऽपि तादृशाः ॥ २८ ॥
hiṃsitvā raktamāṃsāni saṃtyaktā ye mahājanāḥ ,
tebhyo vidhuranāḍībhyo ye jātāste'pi tādṛśāḥ 28
28. hiṃsitvā raktamāṃsāni saṃtyaktāḥ ye mahājanāḥ
tebhyaḥ vidhuranaḍībhyaḥ ye jātāḥ te api tādṛśāḥ
28. (yena) raktamāṃsāni hiṃsitvā ye mahājanāḥ saṃtyaktāḥ,
tebhyaḥ (ca) vidhuranaḍībhyaḥ ye jātāḥ,
te api tādṛśāḥ.
28. Those great individuals who were abandoned after their blood and flesh were harmed – from them, and from their distressed vital channels (nāḍīs), those who were born are also similar (in distress).
राजन्विषूचिकामन्त्रः सोऽयं संपन्न एव ते ।
नहि सत्त्ववतामस्ति दुःसाध्यमिह किंचन ॥ २९ ॥
rājanviṣūcikāmantraḥ so'yaṃ saṃpanna eva te ,
nahi sattvavatāmasti duḥsādhyamiha kiṃcana 29
29. rājan viṣūcikāmantraḥ saḥ ayam sampannaḥ eva te
na hi sattvavatām asti duḥsādhyam iha kiṃcana
29. rājan ayam saḥ viṣūcikāmantraḥ te eva sampannaḥ
hi sattvavatām iha kiṃcana duḥsādhyam na asti
29. O King, this specific incantation (mantra) for the epidemic (viṣūcikā) has certainly been accomplished for you. Indeed, there is nothing in this world that is impossible for those who possess inner strength (sattva).
अतो दुर्नाडिकोशेषु शूलानां परिशान्तये ।
मन्त्रो यो ब्रह्मणा प्रोक्तो राजञ्शीघ्रं गृहाण तम् ॥ ३० ॥
ato durnāḍikośeṣu śūlānāṃ pariśāntaye ,
mantro yo brahmaṇā prokto rājañśīghraṃ gṛhāṇa tam 30
30. ataḥ durnāḍikoṣeṣu śūlānām pariśāntaye mantraḥ
yaḥ brahmaṇā proktaḥ rājan śīghram gṛhāṇa tam
30. ataḥ rājan brahmaṇā proktaḥ yaḥ mantraḥ
durnāḍikoṣeṣu śūlānām pariśāntaye tam śīghram gṛhāṇa
30. Therefore, O King, quickly accept that incantation (mantra) which was taught by Brahma (brahman) for the complete alleviation of pains arising from obstructed channels.
आगच्छ निकटं नद्या गच्छामस्तत्र भूमिप ।
स्वाचान्ताभ्यां संयताभ्यां भवद्भ्यां सुमता ददे ॥ ३१ ॥
āgaccha nikaṭaṃ nadyā gacchāmastatra bhūmipa ,
svācāntābhyāṃ saṃyatābhyāṃ bhavadbhyāṃ sumatā dade 31
31. āgaccha nikaṭam nadyāḥ gacchāmaḥ tatra bhūmipa
svācāntābhyām saṃyatābhyām bhavadbhyām sumatā dade
31. bhūmipa nadyāḥ nikaṭam āgaccha tatra gacchāmaḥ
svācāntābhyām saṃyatābhyām bhavadbhyām sumatā dade
31. O King, come near the river; let us go there. I shall give (the mantra) with good intention to you both, who are purified by ritual sipping (ācamana) and are self-controlled.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इति तस्यां तदा रात्र्यां राक्षसीमन्त्रिभूभृतः ।
जग्मुस्ते सरितस्तीरं मिथः संजातसौहृदाः ॥ ३२ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
iti tasyāṃ tadā rātryāṃ rākṣasīmantribhūbhṛtaḥ ,
jagmuste saritastīraṃ mithaḥ saṃjātasauhṛdāḥ 32
32. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca iti tasyām tadā rātryām rākṣasīmantribhūbhṛtaḥ
jagmuḥ te saritaḥ tīram mithaḥ saṃjātasauhṛdāḥ
32. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca iti tasyām tadā rātryām rākṣasīmantribhūbhṛtaḥ
mithaḥ saṃjātasauhṛdāḥ te saritaḥ tīram jagmuḥ
32. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Thus, on that night, the demoness, the minister, and the king went to the river's bank, having formed a mutual friendship.
अन्वयव्यतिरेकेण राक्षस्याः सौहृदं तदा ।
ज्ञात्वा स्थितौ तौ स्वाचान्तावुभावन्तेनिवासिनौ ॥ ३३ ॥
anvayavyatirekeṇa rākṣasyāḥ sauhṛdaṃ tadā ,
jñātvā sthitau tau svācāntāvubhāvantenivāsinau 33
33. anvaya-vyatirekeṇa rākṣasyāḥ sauhṛdam tadā
jñātvā sthitau tau svācāntau ubhau antenivāsinau
33. tadā anvaya-vyatirekeṇa rākṣasyāḥ sauhṛdam jñātvā,
svācāntau ubhau tau antenivāsinau sthitau
33. Then, by the method of agreement and difference, understanding the demoness's affection, those two resident students (antenvāsinau), having purified themselves, remained there.
तया ब्रह्मोपदिष्टोऽसौ ततस्ताभ्यां यथाक्रमम् ।
स्नेहाद्विषूचिकामन्त्रः प्रदत्तो जपसिद्धिदः ॥ ३४ ॥
tayā brahmopadiṣṭo'sau tatastābhyāṃ yathākramam ,
snehādviṣūcikāmantraḥ pradatto japasiddhidaḥ 34
34. tayā brahma-upadiṣṭaḥ asau tataḥ tābhyām yathākramam
snehāt viṣūcikā-mantraḥ pradattaḥ japa-siddhi-daḥ
34. tayā asau brahma-upadiṣṭaḥ; tataḥ tābhyām snehāt
yathākramam japa-siddhi-daḥ viṣūcikā-mantraḥ pradattaḥ
34. By her, he was instructed in the ultimate reality (brahman). Then, out of affection, the *viṣūcikā mantra*, which grants success in chanting, was given by those two (disciples) in due order.
ततः संजातसौहार्दौ तौ विसृज्य निशाचरी ।
यदा गन्तुं प्रवृत्तासौ तदा राजाब्रवीद्वचः ॥ ३५ ॥
tataḥ saṃjātasauhārdau tau visṛjya niśācarī ,
yadā gantuṃ pravṛttāsau tadā rājābravīdvacaḥ 35
35. tataḥ saṃjāta-sauhārddau tau visṛjya niśācarī
yadā gantum pravṛttā asau tadā rājā abravīt vacaḥ
35. tataḥ niśācarī saṃjāta-sauhārddau tau visṛjya,
yadā asau gantum pravṛttā,
tadā rājā vacaḥ abravīt
35. Then, when the demoness, having conceived affection for them, dismissed those two (disciples) and was about to leave, the king then spoke these words.
राजोवाच ।
गुरुस्त्वं नौ महादेहे वयस्या च सुनिर्वृता ।
निमन्त्रयावहे यत्नाद्ग्रासाय तव सुन्दरि ॥ ३६ ॥
rājovāca ,
gurustvaṃ nau mahādehe vayasyā ca sunirvṛtā ,
nimantrayāvahe yatnādgrāsāya tava sundari 36
36. rājā uvāca guruḥ tvam nau mahādehe vayasyā ca
su-nirvṛtā nimantrayāvahe yatnāt grāsāya tava sundari
36. rājā uvāca: mahādehe,
tvam nau guruḥ ca su-nirvṛtā vayasyā (asi).
sundari,
yatnāt tava grāsāya nimantrayāvahe.
36. The king said: "O great-bodied one, you are our teacher (guru) and a delightful friend. Therefore, O beautiful one, we earnestly invite you for a meal."
न चास्मत्प्रणयं प्रीता वितथीकर्तुमर्हसि ।
सौहार्दं सुजनानां हि दर्शनादेव वर्धते ॥ ३७ ॥
na cāsmatpraṇayaṃ prītā vitathīkartumarhasi ,
sauhārdaṃ sujanānāṃ hi darśanādeva vardhate 37
37. na ca asmat praṇayam prītā vitathīkartum arhasi
sauhārdam sujanānām hi darśanāt eva vardhate
37. prītā asmat praṇayam vitathīkartum na ca arhasi
hi sujanānām sauhārdam darśanāt eva vardhate
37. Pleased as you are, you ought not to render our affection fruitless. For the friendship of noble persons indeed grows simply by seeing one another.
लघुसौभाग्यसंयुक्तं कृत्वाकारं मनोरमम् ।
आगच्छास्मद्गृहं भद्रे तत्र तिष्ठ यथासुखम् ॥ ३८ ॥
laghusaubhāgyasaṃyuktaṃ kṛtvākāraṃ manoramam ,
āgacchāsmadgṛhaṃ bhadre tatra tiṣṭha yathāsukham 38
38. laghusaubhāgyasaṃyuktam kṛtvā ākāram manoramam
āgaccha asmat gṛham bhadre tatra tiṣṭha yathāsukham
38. bhadre laghusaubhāgyasaṃyuktam manoramam ākāram
kṛtvā asmat gṛham āgaccha tatra yathāsukham tiṣṭha
38. O good lady (bhadre), having assumed a delightful form (ākāra) endowed with modest beauty, come to our house and stay there as comfortably as you wish.
राक्षस्युवाच ।
मुग्धस्त्रीरूपधारिण्यै दातुं शक्तोऽसि भोजनम् ।
संतर्पयसि मां केन राक्षसाकारधारिणीम् ॥ ३९ ॥
rākṣasyuvāca ,
mugdhastrīrūpadhāriṇyai dātuṃ śakto'si bhojanam ,
saṃtarpayasi māṃ kena rākṣasākāradhāriṇīm 39
39. rākṣasī uvāca mugdhastrīrūpadhāriṇyai dātum śaktaḥ
asi bhojanam saṃtarpayasi mām kena rākṣasākāradhāriṇīm
39. rākṣasī uvāca mugdhastrīrūpadhāriṇyai bhojanam dātum
śaktaḥ asi rākṣasākāradhāriṇīm mām kena saṃtarpayasi
39. The female demon said: 'You are capable of offering food to one who assumes the form of a charming woman. But by what means will you satisfy me, who bears the form of a female demon?'
रक्षोन्नमेव संतुष्ट्यै न सामान्यजनाशनम् ।
पूर्वसिद्धस्वभावोऽयमादेहं न निवर्तते ॥ ४० ॥
rakṣonnameva saṃtuṣṭyai na sāmānyajanāśanam ,
pūrvasiddhasvabhāvo'yamādehaṃ na nivartate 40
40. rakṣaḥ annam eva saṃtuṣṭyai na sāmānyajanāśanam
pūrvasiddhasvabhāvaḥ ayam ādeham na nivartate
40. saṃtuṣṭyai rakṣaḥ annam eva na sāmānyajanāśanam
ayam pūrvasiddhasvabhāvaḥ ādeham na nivartate
40. Indeed, only the food of demons is for my satisfaction, not the food (āśana) of ordinary people. This intrinsic nature (svabhāva), established from birth, does not change until the end of the body (ādeham).
राजोवाच ।
हेमस्रग्दामवलिता दिनानि कतिचिद्गृहे ।
मम स्त्रीरूपिणी तिष्ठ यावदिच्छमनिन्दिते ॥ ४१ ॥
rājovāca ,
hemasragdāmavalitā dināni katicidgṛhe ,
mama strīrūpiṇī tiṣṭha yāvadicchamanindite 41
41. rājā uvāca hemasragdāmāvalitā dināni katicit gṛhe
mama strī-rūpiṇī tiṣṭha yāvat-iccham anindite
41. rājā uvāca he anindite hemasragdāmāvalitā strī-rūpiṇī
mama gṛhe katicit dināni yāvat-iccham tiṣṭha
41. The king said: "O blameless one, remain in my house for some days, adorned with a golden garland and in the form of a woman, for as long as you desire."
ततो दुष्कृतिनश्चौरान्वध्याञ्छतसहस्रशः ।
मण्डलेभ्यः समानीय ददे तुभ्यं सुभोजनम् ॥ ४२ ॥
tato duṣkṛtinaścaurānvadhyāñchatasahasraśaḥ ,
maṇḍalebhyaḥ samānīya dade tubhyaṃ subhojanam 42
42. tataḥ duṣkṛtinaḥ caurān vadhyān śata-sahasraśaḥ
maṇḍalebhyaḥ samānīya dade tubhyam su-bhojanam
42. tataḥ maṇḍalebhyaḥ duṣkṛtinaḥ vadhyān caurān
śata-sahasraśaḥ samānīya tubhyam su-bhojanam dade
42. "Then, having gathered wicked thieves and criminals, hundreds of thousands of them, from various regions, I shall give them to you as a splendid meal."
कान्तारूपं परित्यज्य गृहीत्वा राक्षसं वपुः ।
आदाय वध्याञ्छतशः पुरुषांस्तान्सुसंचितान् ॥ ४३ ॥
kāntārūpaṃ parityajya gṛhītvā rākṣasaṃ vapuḥ ,
ādāya vadhyāñchataśaḥ puruṣāṃstānsusaṃcitān 43
43. kāntā-rūpam parityajya gṛhītvā rākṣasam vapuḥ
ādāya vadhyān śataśaḥ puruṣān tān su-saṃcitān
43. kāntā-rūpam parityajya rākṣasam vapuḥ gṛhītvā
tān su-saṃcitān vadhyān puruṣān śataśaḥ ādāya
43. Abandoning the form of a beautiful woman, and assuming a demonic body (vapuḥ), take away those hundreds of well-gathered men, the criminals.
नयस्व हिमवच्छृंङ्गं तत्र भुङ्क्ष्व यथासुखम् ।
महाशनानामेकान्ते भोजनं हि सुखायते ॥ ४४ ॥
nayasva himavacchṛṃṅgaṃ tatra bhuṅkṣva yathāsukham ,
mahāśanānāmekānte bhojanaṃ hi sukhāyate 44
44. nayasva himavat-śṛṅgam tatra bhuṅkṣva yathā-sukham
mahā-aśanānām ekānte bhojanam hi sukhāyate
44. (tvam) himavat-śṛṅgam nayasva tatra yathā-sukham
bhuṅkṣva hi ekānte mahā-aśanānām bhojanam sukhāyate
44. Take them to the peak of the Himalayas; there, feast as you desire. Indeed, for great eaters, consuming food in solitude brings contentment.
तृप्ता निद्रां मनाक्कृत्वा भव भूयः समाधिभाक् ।
समाधिविरता भूयोऽप्यागत्य पुनरन्यदा ॥ ४५ ॥
tṛptā nidrāṃ manākkṛtvā bhava bhūyaḥ samādhibhāk ,
samādhiviratā bhūyo'pyāgatya punaranyadā 45
45. tṛptā nidrām manāk kṛtvā bhava bhūyaḥ samādhibhāk
| samādhiviratā bhūyaḥ api āgatya punar anyadā ||
45. tṛptā manāk nidrām kṛtvā bhūyaḥ samādhibhāk bhava
samādhiviratā bhūyaḥ api anyadā punar āgatya
45. Having become content and having slept a little, be devoted again to meditative absorption (dhyāna). Then, having rested from meditative absorption, come back again at another time.
नेष्यस्यन्यान्वध्यजनान् हिंसा नैषां च धर्मतः ।
स्वधर्मेण च हित्वैव महाकरुणया समा ॥ ४६ ॥
neṣyasyanyānvadhyajanān hiṃsā naiṣāṃ ca dharmataḥ ,
svadharmeṇa ca hitvaiva mahākaruṇayā samā 46
46. na eṣyasi anyān vadhyajanān hiṃsā na eṣām ca dharmataḥ
| svadharmeṇa ca hitvā eva mahākaruṇayā samā ||
46. na eṣyasi anyān vadhyajanān ca eṣām hiṃsā dharmataḥ
na ca svadharmeṇa eva hitvā mahākaruṇayā samā
46. You will not lead other people to be sacrificed, for violence against them is not in accordance with natural law (dharma). Rather, having truly forsaken (such acts) by your own natural law (dharma), with great compassion, you will become equal (to others).
त्वं समेष्यसि चावश्यं मां समाधिविरागिणी ।
असतामपि संरूढं सौहार्दं न निवर्तते ॥ ४७ ॥
tvaṃ sameṣyasi cāvaśyaṃ māṃ samādhivirāgiṇī ,
asatāmapi saṃrūḍhaṃ sauhārdaṃ na nivartate 47
47. tvam sameṣyasi ca avaśyam mām samādhivirāgiṇī |
asatām api saṃrūḍham sauhārdam na nivartate ||
47. ca tvam samādhivirāgiṇī avaśyam mām sameṣyasi
asatām api saṃrūḍham sauhārdam na nivartate
47. And you, who are disinclined to meditative absorption (dhyāna), will certainly come to me. For even among the wicked, a firmly rooted friendship does not cease.
राक्षस्युवाच ।
युक्तमुक्तं त्वया राजन्करोम्येवमहं सखे ।
सौहार्देन प्रवृत्तस्य को वाक्यं नाभिनन्दति ॥ ४८ ॥
rākṣasyuvāca ,
yuktamuktaṃ tvayā rājankaromyevamahaṃ sakhe ,
sauhārdena pravṛttasya ko vākyaṃ nābhinandati 48
48. rākṣasī uvāca | yuktam uktam tvayā rājan karomi evam aham
sakhe | sauhārdena pravṛttasya kaḥ vākyam na abhinandati ||
48. rākṣasī uvāca rājan,
tvayā yuktam uktam sakhe,
aham evam karomi sauhārdena pravṛttasya vākyam kaḥ na abhinandati?
48. The demoness said: 'What you have said, O king, is proper. I will act thus, O friend. Who does not welcome the words of one who proceeds with friendship?'
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा राक्षसी तत्र संपन्ना सुविलासिनी ।
हारकेयूरकटकपट्टस्रग्दामधारिणी ॥ ४९ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
ityuktvā rākṣasī tatra saṃpannā suvilāsinī ,
hārakeyūrakaṭakapaṭṭasragdāmadhāriṇī 49
49. śrī vasiṣṭha uvāca iti uktvā rākṣasī tatra sampannā
suvilāsinī hārakeyūrakakaṭakapaṭṭasragdāmadhāriṇī
49. śrī vasiṣṭha uvāca iti uktvā tatra rākṣasī
hārakeyūrakakaṭakapaṭṭasragdāmadhāriṇī suvilāsinī sampannā
49. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having spoken thus, the demoness (rākṣasī) there transformed into a very charming woman, adorned with necklaces, armlets, bracelets, waist-bands, garlands, and strings of flowers.
राजन्नागच्छ गच्छाम इत्युक्त्वा भूपमन्त्रिणौ ।
अग्रे गन्तुं प्रवृत्तौ तौ रात्रावनुससार सा ॥ ५० ॥
rājannāgaccha gacchāma ityuktvā bhūpamantriṇau ,
agre gantuṃ pravṛttau tau rātrāvanusasāra sā 50
50. rājan āgaccha gacchāmaḥ iti uktvā bhūpamantriṇau
agre gantum pravṛttau tau rātrau anusasāra sā
50. sā rājan āgaccha gacchāmaḥ iti uktvā,
tau bhūpamantriṇau agre gantum pravṛttau (abābhavatuḥ),
sā rātrau (tān) anusasāra
50. "O King, come, let us go!" Having said this, the king and the minister began to go forward, and she followed them during the night.
अथ ते पार्थिवगृहं प्राप्य तां रजनीं मिथः ।
कथयैकगृहे रम्ये क्षपयामासुरादृताः ॥ ५१ ॥
atha te pārthivagṛhaṃ prāpya tāṃ rajanīṃ mithaḥ ,
kathayaikagṛhe ramye kṣapayāmāsurādṛtāḥ 51
51. atha te pārthivagṛham prāpya tām rajanīm mithaḥ
kathayā ekagṛhe ramye kṣapayām āsuḥ ādṛtāḥ
51. atha te ādṛtāḥ pārthivagṛham prāpya tām rajanīm
ramye ekagṛhe mithaḥ kathayā kṣapayām āsuḥ
51. Then, reaching the king's residence, they, being respectful, spent that night conversing with each other in a beautiful single room.
प्रभातेऽन्तःपुरे तस्थौ पुरन्ध्रीजनलीलया ।
राक्षसी मन्त्रिराजानौ स्वव्यापारौ बभूवतुः ॥ ५२ ॥
prabhāte'ntaḥpure tasthau purandhrījanalīlayā ,
rākṣasī mantrirājānau svavyāpārau babhūvatuḥ 52
52. prabhāte antaḥpure tasthau purandhrījanalīlayā
rākṣasī mantrirājānau svavyāpārau babhūvatuḥ

52. In the morning, the demoness (rākṣasī) remained in the inner palace as if taking on the role of a woman of the inner chambers, while the minister and the king engaged in their own affairs.
ततो दिवसषट्केन संचितानि महीभृता ।
नृपः परपुरेभ्योऽपि स्वमण्डलगणात्तथा ॥ ५३ ॥
tato divasaṣaṭkena saṃcitāni mahībhṛtā ,
nṛpaḥ parapurebhyo'pi svamaṇḍalagaṇāttathā 53
53. tataḥ divasaṣaṭkena saṃcitāni mahībhṛtā
nṛpaḥ parapurebhyaḥ api svamaṇḍalagaṇāt tathā
53. tataḥ nṛpaḥ mahībhṛtā divasaṣaṭkena
parapurebhyaḥ api tathā svamaṇḍalagaṇāt saṃcitāni
53. Then, within six days, the king had gathered [thousands of victims] from other cities as well as from the populace of his own dominion.
त्रीणि वध्यसहस्राणि तानि तस्यै तदा ददौ ।
सा बभूव निशा काले सैवोग्रा कृष्णराक्षसी ॥ ५४ ॥
trīṇi vadhyasahasrāṇi tāni tasyai tadā dadau ,
sā babhūva niśā kāle saivogrā kṛṣṇarākṣasī 54
54. trīṇi vadhyasahasrāṇi tāni tasyai tadā dadau
sā babhūva niśā kāle sā eva ugrā kṛṣṇarākṣasī
54. tadā saḥ tāni trīṇi vadhyasahasrāṇi tasyai
dadau kāle niśā sā eva ugrā kṛṣṇarākṣasī babhūva
54. Then he gave those three thousand victims to her. At night, she herself became a fierce, black demoness.
तानि वध्यसहस्राणि जग्राह भुजमण्डले ।
धारानिकरजालानि मेघमालेव कोटरे ॥ ५५ ॥
tāni vadhyasahasrāṇi jagrāha bhujamaṇḍale ,
dhārānikarajālāni meghamāleva koṭare 55
55. tāni vadhyasahasrāṇi jagrāha bhujamaṇḍale
dhārānikarājālāni meghamālā iva koṭare
55. sā tāni vadhyasahasrāṇi bhujamaṇḍale jagrāha
meghamālā iva koṭare dhārānikarājālāni [jagrāha]
55. She seized those thousands of victims in her multitude of arms, just as a series of clouds holds masses of rain streams within its hollow.
ययौ राजानमापृच्छ्य तदेव हिमवच्छिरः ।
दरिद्रा लब्धहेमेव ग्रहेषूग्रशरीरिणी ॥ ५६ ॥
yayau rājānamāpṛcchya tadeva himavacchiraḥ ,
daridrā labdhahemeva graheṣūgraśarīriṇī 56
56. yayau rājānam āpṛcchya tat eva himavacchiraḥ
daridrā labdhahemā iva graheṣu ugraśarīriṇī
56. sā rājānam āpṛcchya tat eva himavacchiraḥ yayau daridrā labdhahemā iva,
graheṣu ugraśarīriṇī [yayau]
56. Having taken leave of the king, she departed for that very peak of the Himalayas, like a poor woman who has found gold, and with a fierce form (manifesting) among the planets.
तत्र तृप्ता भृशं भुक्त्वा सुखं सुप्त्वा दिनत्रयम् ।
आसीत्प्रबोधसुस्वस्था सा समाधिमतिः पुनः ॥ ५७ ॥
tatra tṛptā bhṛśaṃ bhuktvā sukhaṃ suptvā dinatrayam ,
āsītprabodhasusvasthā sā samādhimatiḥ punaḥ 57
57. tatra tṛptā bhṛśam bhuktvā sukham suptvā dinatrayam
āsīt prabodha-susvasthā sā samādhimatiḥ punaḥ
57. tatra bhṛśam bhuktvā tṛptā sukham dinatrayam suptvā,
sā samādhimatiḥ punaḥ prabodha-susvasthā āsīt.
57. There, having eaten much and felt satisfied, and having comfortably slept for three days, that woman whose intellect (mati) was fixed in deep meditation (samādhi) was again completely refreshed upon awakening.
पञ्चभिर्वा चतुर्भिर्वा वर्षैः सा संप्रबुध्यते ।
तत्ततो मण्डलं याति तेन राजसभाजने ॥ ५८ ॥
pañcabhirvā caturbhirvā varṣaiḥ sā saṃprabudhyate ,
tattato maṇḍalaṃ yāti tena rājasabhājane 58
58. pañcabhiḥ vā caturbhiḥ vā varṣaiḥ sā samprabudhyate
tat tataḥ maṇḍalam yāti tena rājasabhājane
58. sā pañcabhiḥ vā caturbhiḥ vā varṣaiḥ samprabudhyate.
tat tataḥ tena rājasabhājane maṇḍalam yāti.
58. She awakens after four or five years. Then, from there, she proceeds to that region (maṇḍala) for an audience in the royal court.
तत्र विश्रम्भगर्भाभिः कथाभिः कंचिदेव सा ।
स्थित्वा कालं गृहीत्वा तान्वध्यान्स्वास्पदमेत्यथ ॥ ५९ ॥
tatra viśrambhagarbhābhiḥ kathābhiḥ kaṃcideva sā ,
sthitvā kālaṃ gṛhītvā tānvadhyānsvāspadametyatha 59
59. tatra viśrambhagarbhābhiḥ kathābhiḥ kañcit eva sā
sthitvā kālam gṛhītvā tān vadhyān svāspadam etya atha
59. tatra sā viśrambhagarbhābhiḥ kathābhiḥ kañcit eva kālam sthitvā,
atha tān vadhyān gṛhītvā svāspadam etya.
59. There, having stayed for a certain time engaging in confidential conversations, she then, taking those who were to be executed, returned to her own abode.
जीवन्मुक्ततयैवमेव विपिने साद्यापि रक्षोङ्गना तस्मिन्नेव गिरौ स्थिता विचलितध्यानैकतानाशया ।
तस्मिन्राजनि शान्तिमागतवति त्यक्तैषणेनात्मना तद्राष्ट्राधिपसौहृदैः स्वकवलानास्वादयन्ती चिरं ॥ ६० ॥
jīvanmuktatayaivameva vipine sādyāpi rakṣoṅganā tasminneva girau sthitā vicalitadhyānaikatānāśayā ,
tasminrājani śāntimāgatavati tyaktaiṣaṇenātmanā tadrāṣṭrādhipasauhṛdaiḥ svakavalānāsvādayantī ciraṃ 60
60. jīvanmuktatayā evam eva vipine sā adyāpi rakṣoṅganā
tasmin eva girau sthitā vichalitadhyānaikatānāśayā
tasmin rājani śāntim āgatavati tyaktaiṣaṇena ātmanā
tat rāṣṭrādhipasauhṛdaiḥ svakavalān āsvādayantī ciram
60. adyāpi sā rakṣoṅganā jīvanmuktatayā evam eva vichalitadhyānaikatānāśayā vipine tasmin eva girau sthitā.
tasmin rājani tyaktaiṣaṇena ātmanā śāntim āgatavati,
tat rāṣṭrādhipasauhṛdaiḥ svakavalān ciram āsvādayantī.
60. Even today, that demoness (rakṣoṅganā) resides in the forest, on that very mountain, having attained liberation while living (jīvanmuktatā) in this very manner, her intention steadfastly focused on undisturbed meditation (dhyāna). There, she long enjoys her own morsels through the benevolent support (sauhṛda) of the ruler of that kingdom, ever since that king attained peace with a self that had abandoned all desires.
